RESUMO

Well-leg compartment syndrome (WLCS) develops in healthy lower limbs because of surgical factors such as operative position, lower limb compression, and long operative time during abdominopelvic surgery. WLCS can lead to irreversible muscle and nerve damage if a prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment are not provided. We report the case of a 57-year-old male who developed rectal cancer immediately after laparoscopic low anterior resection and was successfully treated with fasciotomy without sequelae. Patients who undergo surgery in the lithotomy position for a prolonged period are at risk of WLCS. Therefore, when determining the differential diagnosis of postoperative lower leg pain, it is necessary to consider WLCS because it is a complication caused by the intraoperative position.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic monitoring of disease activity in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) is important. However, frequent colonoscopic examinations are difficult to perform because of their invasiveness, especially in children. Bowel wall thickness (BWT) measurement using intestinal ultrasonography and fecal calprotectin (FC) measurement are useful noninvasive evaluation methods. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed BWT and FC levels and evaluated the Mayo endoscopic subscore (MES) using colonoscopy in pediatric patients with UC during the same period. The BWT was evaluated using the maximum BWT (mBWT), which was the maximum value of each colonic BWT; the sum of BWT (sBWT), which was the sum of each colonic BWT; and the sum of the adjusted BWT (saBWT), which was corrected using sBWT. RESULTS: In 54 procedures from 40 patients, FC, mBWT, sBWT, and saBWT were significantly different between MES 0-1 and MES 2. The agreement between BWT and MES 2 was 193 out of 216 segments (89.4%). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of FC were 68.8%, 84.2%, 64.7%, 86.5%, and 79.6% respectively, while those of saBWT were 81.2%, 89.5%, 76.5%, 91.9%, 87.0%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: BWT in each colonic segment, particularly saBWT, was more useful than FC for detecting moderate colonic inflammation (MES 2) in pediatric patients with UC. Therefore, intestinal ultrasonography may be helpful in the less invasive management of pediatric patients with UC.

RESUMO

The short- and long-term outcomes of 34 patients with refractory malignant ascites who underwent peritoneovenous shunt (PVS) therapy were retrospectively reviewed. The primary disease was gastrointestinal cancer in 31 patients and gynecologic cancer in 3 patients. Regarding performance status, 21 patients had Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (PS) 2 and 13 patients were PS 3;thus, many were in a poor general condition. After treatment, abdominal distention disappeared in 79.4% of patients, and appetite improved in 60.9%. The median postoperative survival time was 38 days (range, 1-294 days), and 18 patients (52.9%) were discharged. Disseminated intravascular coagulation with clinical symptoms was observed in 3 patients (8.8%), and heart failure was observed in 7 patients (20.6%). PVS therapy was useful in improving the subjective symptoms of patients with refractory malignant ascites and in enabling them to receive care at home. However, serious postoperative complications are a concern, and appropriate preoperative evaluation is necessary.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Although lung cancer can metastasize to various organs such as the liver, lymph nodes, adrenal gland, bone, and brain, metastases to the digestive organs, especially the colon, are rare. CASE SUMMARY: An 83-year-old man diagnosed with lung cancer received radiation and chemoimmunotherapy, resulting in a complete clinical response. One year after the initial lung cancer diagnosis, the patient presented with obstructive ileus caused by a tumor in the descending colon. An elective left hemicolectomy was successfully performed after the endoscopic placement of a self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS). Pathologically, the tumor of the descending colon was diagnosed as lung cancer metastasis. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient is in good condition 13 mo after surgery, with no signs of recurrence. The previous 23 cases of surgical resection of colonic metastasis from lung cancer were reviewed using PubMed to characterize their clinicopathological features and outcomes. CONCLUSION: SEMS is useful for obstructive colonic metastasis as a bridge to surgery to avoid emergency operations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) for Crohn's disease is useful; however, its use has some limitations, such as invasiveness when endoscopic assistance is required in patients who cannot swallow the capsule, and the burden of interpretation on a physician. In contrast, intestinal ultrasonography (IUS) is a non-invasive modality for children. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of IUS for pediatric patients with established Crohn's disease. METHODS: Small bowel capsule endoscopy and IUS findings from the same period in pediatric patients with established Crohn's disease were analyzed retrospectively. First, we compared the Lewis score (LS), small bowel endoscopic activity, and IUS findings by small bowel wall thickness (SBWT) and mesenteric lymph node size (MLNS). Second, we compared the performance of IUS findings with those of some biomarkers. RESULTS: In 22 procedures, SBWT and MLNS were correlated with LS (r = 0.52, P < 0.05, and r = 0.45, P < 0.05, respectively). Small bowel wall thickness, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and fecal calprotectin levels had the highest accuracy (81.8%, 81.8%, and 81.8%, respectively). The combination of SBWT and MLNS had the highest positive predictive value and negative predictive value (100% and 83.3%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Intestinal ultrasonography findings, including SBWT and MLNS, are useful for monitoring small bowel lesions in pediatric patients with established Crohn's disease. We suggest first evaluating small bowel inflammation by IUS in pediatric patients with Crohn's disease before SBCE because IUS is less invasive than SBCE.

RESUMO

KARRIKIN INSENSITIVE2 (KAI2) was first identified as a receptor of karrikins, smoke-derived germination stimulants. KAI2 is also considered a receptor of an unidentified endogenous molecule called the KAI2 ligand. Upon KAI2 activation, signals are transmitted through the degradation of D53/SMXL proteins via MAX2-dependent ubiquitination. Although components in the KAI2-dependent signaling pathway, namely MpKAI2A and MpKAI2B, MpMAX2, and MpSMXL, exist in the genome of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, their functions remain unknown. Here, we show that early thallus growth is retarded and gemma dormancy in the dark is suppressed in Mpkai2a and Mpmax2 loss-of-function mutants. These defects are counteracted in Mpkai2a Mpsmxl and Mpmax2 Mpsmxl double mutants indicating that MpKAI2A, MpMAX2, and MpSMXL act in the same genetic pathway. Introduction of MpSMXLd53, in which a domain required for degradation is mutated, into wild-type plants mimicks Mpkai2a and Mpmax2 plants. In addition, the detection of citrine fluorescence in Nicotiana benthamiana cells transiently expressing a SMXL-Citrine fusion protein requires treatment with MG132, a proteasome inhibitor. These findings imply that MpSMXL is subjected to degradation, and that the degradation of MpSMXL is crucial for MpKAI2A-dependent signaling in M. polymorpha. Therefore, we claim that the basic mechanisms in the KAI2-dependent signaling pathway are conserved in M. polymorpha.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To conduct the first national population-based study in Japan to characterize risks of death by suicide, other externally caused injuries and cardiovascular diseases within 6 months of cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Cancer patients diagnosed between 1 January and 30 June 2016 and registered in the National Cancer Registry in Japan were followed up until death or 6 months after diagnosis. We calculated standardized mortality ratios and excess absolute risks per 10 000 person-years for death by suicide, other externally caused injuries and cardiovascular diseases compared with the Japanese general population. RESULTS: Of 546 148 patients with cancer (249 116 person-years at risk), we observed 145 suicides, 298 deaths due to other externally caused injuries and 2366 cardiovascular deaths during the follow-up period. Standardized mortality ratios within 6 months were 2.68 for suicide (95% confidence interval, 2.26-3.16; excess absolute risk, 3.65), 1.49 for other externally caused injuries (95% confidence interval, 1.32-1.67; excess absolute risk, 3.92) and 1.38 for cardiovascular diseases (95% confidence interval, 1.33-1.44; excess absolute risk, 26.85). Risks were highest during the first month after cancer diagnosis (standardized mortality ratios: suicide, 4.06 [95% confidence interval, 2.90-5.53]; other externally caused injuries, 2.66 [95% confidence interval, 2.17-3.12] and cardiovascular diseases, 2.34 [95% confidence interval, 2.18-2.51]). CONCLUSIONS: The first 6 months, and especially the first month, after cancer diagnosis were found to be a critical period for risks of death by suicide, other externally caused injuries and cardiovascular diseases. Our findings suggest that oncologists need to evaluate suicidal and cardiovascular risks of patients immediately after cancer diagnosis and provide preventive interventions.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: We report a case of conversion surgery for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) with synchronous distant metastases showing pathological complete response (pCR) after FOLFIRINOX therapy. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 46-year-old woman with obstructive jaundice was referred to our hospital. A CT scan revealed a hypo-vascular mass in the head of the pancreas with multiple para-aortic lymph nodes and a Virchow's node swollen. The serum CA 19-9 level was 71795.1 U/mL. The result of tumor biopsy from the biliary stenotic site was concordant with adenocarcinoma. She was diagnosed with PDAC with distant metastases. After 10 courses of FOLFIRINOX followed by 4 courses of FOLFIRI, a CT scan showed that distant lymph node swellings disappeared, and CA19-9 level became almost normal. She underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy with dissection of para-aortic lymph nodes 8 months after the initiation of chemotherapy. Pathologically, no evidence of residual adenocarcinoma was observed in neither pancreas nor lymph nodes. Adjuvant chemotherapy using S-1 was administered for 6 months, and no recurrence has been observed 4 years after surgery. BRCA1/2 mutations were not detected in patient's DNA. DISCUSSION: With the induction of intensive chemotherapies such as FOLFIRINOX, an increasing number of patients with synchronous distant metastases could become suitable candidates for surgery of the primary lesion because of the potential complete response of metastatic lesions. CONCLUSION: This case presented a rare occurrence of pCR in a patient with unresectable PDAC with distant metastases who received FOLFIRINOX. The feasibility and benefits of conversion surgery in such patients must be investigated in future trials.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to summarize interventions for suicide prevention in patients with cancer and highlight any methodological issues. METHODS: We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and the Cochrane database from their inception until July 2018. Additionally, we manually searched the references of included studies and recent systematic reviews of psychotherapy, antidepressants, and collaborative care for cancer patients with depression. RESULTS: Of the 1365 retrieved articles, 11 randomized controlled trials and 11 intervention studies met the inclusion criteria. These were categorized by type of intervention: psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, integrated collaborative care, muscle relaxation and therapeutic walking, and cancer treatment. The trials showed little evidence to confirm the effects of suicide prevention strategies. Seven trials were designed to assess the efficacy of interventions treating depression. In all studies, suicidal behavior or ideation was reported as one of the secondary outcomes. Three trials did not report information about suicidal ideation, despite assessing depressive symptoms using scales that contained suicidal ideation items. Most trials demonstrated inadequate study quality. CONCLUSIONS: Our review summarized interventions for suicide prevention in patients with cancer and revealed methodological issues. The findings highlighted a need to explore new treatment strategies that focus on unique suicide risk factors among patients with cancer.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: A growing body of literature has demonstrated that cancer patients have a higher risk of suicide and cardiovascular mortality compared with the general population, especially immediately after a cancer diagnosis. Using data from the National Cancer Registry in Japan launched in January 2016, we will conduct the first nationwide population-based study in Japan to compare incidence of death by suicide, other externally caused injuries (ECIs) and cardiovascular disease following a cancer diagnosis with that of the general population in Japan. We will also aim to identify the patient subgroups and time periods associated with particularly high risk. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Our study subjects will consist of cancer cases diagnosed between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2016 in Japan and they will be observed until 31 December 2018. We will calculate standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) and excess absolute risks (EARs) for suicide, other ECIs and cardiovascular death compared with the general population in Japan, after adjustment for sex, age and prefecture. SMRs and EARs will be calculated separately in relation to a number of factors: sex; age at diagnosis; time since cancer diagnosis; prefecture of residence at diagnosis; primary tumour site; behaviour code of tumour; extension of tumour; whether definitive surgery of the primary site was performed; and presence/absence of multiple primary tumours. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study protocol was approved by the institutional review board and ethics committee of the National Cancer Center Japan and Nagoya City University Graduate School of Medical Sciences. The findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: UMIN000035118; Pre-results.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas is a rare neoplasm, affecting primarily young females. Because SPNs are of low-malignancy, they rarely obstruct the main pancreatic duct (MPD) and cause atrophy of the distal pancreas even if their tumor sizes are large. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 35-year-old female was referred to our hospital due to pancreatic tumor. Imaging findings showed the presence of well-defined round tumor in the body of the pancreas with 25-mm in diameter. The pancreas parenchyma distal to the tumor was markedly atrophic, and MPD dilatation was not observed. The lesion was diagnosed as SPN by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA), and central pancreatectomy was performed. Intraoperative frozen section of the distal atrophic pancreas showed no evidence of acinar cells, indicating exocrine dysfunction. Therefore, we closed distal pancreas stump instead of reconstruction. In the distal atrophic parenchyma, scattered foci of islets of Langerhans and the vestige of dilated MPD were observed. She has shown neither endocrine nor exocrine insufficiency after surgery. DISCUSSION: SPNs are usually found without atrophic change of distal pancreas. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of SPN in which exocrine dysfunction of atrophic pancreas was demonstrated pathologically and central pancreatectomy without anastomosis of distal pancreas was chosen for the surgical treatment. CONCLUSION: We reported a very rare case of SPN with marked distal parenchymal atrophy. We successfully performed central pancreatectomy without reconstruction.

RESUMO

We previously found that senescence of cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4) T cells is accelerated in the visceral adipose tissue (VAT) of mice with diet-induced obesity (DIO) due to a high-fat diet (HFD), and that these senescent-associated T cells cause chronic inflammation of visceral adipose tissue through secretion of osteopontin, provoking systemic insulin resistance. In this study, we examined whether the development of chronic inflammation and senescence-associated T cells in VAT of DIO mice was improved by long-term weight loss after switching to normal chow (NC) or by administration of a sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (tofogliflozin). Wild-type mice were fed an HFD for 26 weeks from 4 weeks old. At 30 weeks of age, half of these DIO mice were switched to NC with or without 0.005% tofogliflozin for 38 weeks. The other mice remained on the HFD with or without 0.005% tofogliflozin for 38 weeks. When DIO mice were switched to NC, their weight decreased to that of mice kept on NC since weaning. After 38 weeks (68 weeks of age), chronic inflammation of the VAT subsided with disappearance of senescence-associated T cells. In the HFD groups, the carbohydrate intake per mouse was half or less of that in the NC group, and urinary glucose excretion by the effect of tofogliflozin was lower in the HFD mice than in the NC mice. Mice that remained on the HFD showed no improvement in chronic inflammation in VAT, possibly because urinary glucose excretion was not sufficiently promoted by tofogliflozin due to the low carbohydrate intake. Thus, no improvement in glucose metabolism or weight loss was observed in these mice.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Cleft palate transmembrane protein 1 (Clptm1) and its paralog protein, Cisplatin resistance-related protein 9 (CRR9) constitute a highly conserved protein family, from Caenorhabditis elegans to Homo sapiens. In the present study, we examined the clinicopathological and biological significance of Clptm1 and CRR9 expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). METHODS: Ninety-eight OSCC tissue specimens were immunohistochemically stained with specific antibodies to Clptm1 and CRR9. The immunoreactivity of Clptm1 and CRR9 was then correlated with clinicopathological factors, including the prognosis of patients. siRNA-mediated gene silencing of CRR9 followed by cell proliferation, Matrigel invasion, anoikis assay, and gelatin zymography were performed using cultured OSCC cells. Subsequently, immunohistochemical examination including double staining was performed to determine the correlation between CRR9 and Bcl-xL expression in OSCC cells. RESULTS: Non-tumorous oral squamous cells exhibited vague, weak, or little cytoplasmic staining with anti-Clptm1 and CRR9 antibodies. By contrast, robust Clptm1 and CRR9 immunoreactivity was found at the cancer invasion front in 55 and 54 of the 98 OSCC tissue specimens, respectively. Notably, CRR9 immunoreactivity was associated with more than 5 mm of depth of invasion, poor prognosis of the patients, and smoking habits (P < 0.05). siRNA-mediated gene silencing of CRR9 did not alter the cell proliferation but decreased Matrigel invasion and impaired anoikis resistance in cultured Ca9-22 and SAS cells. CRR9 and anti-apoptotic Bcl-xL expression levels were correlated in pT1 OSCC tissue specimens. CONCLUSIONS: Clptm1 and CRR9 were overexpressed in many OSCC tissues. In particular, CRR9 expression may promote tumor development and have a significant poor prognostic value in OSCC, possibly through conferring invasion ability and resistance to apoptotic stimuli possibly related to Bcl-xL expression. CRR9 could be a novel molecular target for patients with OSCC.

RESUMO

In patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM), predictive markers for response to preoperative chemotherapy are lacking. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression of thymidylate synthase (TS) and excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) as predictive markers in CRLM. A total of 24 patients with CRLM were included in this study. Tumor response was evaluated using the tumor regression grade (TRG) and Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) methods. TS and ERCC1 expression in paired CRLM and primary lesions were assessed by immunohistochemistry. We analyzed correlations between i) the response to preoperative chemotherapy evaluated by TRG and RECIST, ii) TS and ERCC1 expression and the response evaluated by TRG and RESICT, and iii) TS and ERCC1 expression in matched pairs of primary tumor and CRLM. The preoperative chemotherapy response evaluated by TRG and RECIST was significantly associated (P=0.0005). The response based on RECIST criteria and TRG was significantly associated with TS expression in the primary tumor (P=0.0272, and P=0.0137, respectively). No correlations were detected between marker expression in the primary tumor and in CRLM for either TS or ERCC1 (P=0.371 and P=1.00, respectively). Our data suggested that TS expression in the primary tumor is a predictive marker of preoperative chemotherapy response in CRLM based on both TRG and RECIST methods.

RESUMO

The WW domain-containing oxidoreductase (WWOX) functions as a tumour suppressor in oral carcinogenesis. As aberrant TMEM207 expression may lead to tumour progression by hampering the tumour suppressor function of WWOX in various cancers, we explored the expression and pathobiological properties of TMEM207, focusing on the WWOX-mediated regulation of the HIF-1α pathway in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). TMEM207 immunoreactivity was detected in 40 of 90 OSCC samples but not in neighbouring non-tumorous epithelial tissues. Moreover, TMEM207 expression was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis. An in situ proximal ligation assay demonstrated the colocalization of TMEM207 and WWOX in invasive OSCC cells, especially glycogen-rich ones. Enforced expression of TMEM207 abrogated the binding of WWOX to HIF-1α, increased HIF-1α and GLUT-1 expression, even under normoxic conditions, and promoted tumour growth in a xenoplant assay using SAS tongue squamous cancer cells. In contrast, TMEM207 knockdown decreased GLUT-1 expression in two OSCC cell lines. As a whole, our findings indicate that the aberrant expression of TMEM207 contributes to tumour progression in OSCC, possibly via promoting aerobic glycolysis.

RESUMO

Oxaliplatin, a third-generation platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent, displays unique acute peripheral neuropathy triggered or enhanced by cold, and accumulating evidence suggests that transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) is responsible. TRPA1 is activated by oxaliplatin via a glutathione-sensitive mechanism. However, oxaliplatin interrupts hydroxylation of a proline residue located in the N-terminal region of TRPA1 via inhibition of prolyl hydroxylase (PHD), which causes sensitization of TRPA1 to reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, PHD inhibition endows cold-insensitive human TRPA1 (hTRPA1) with ROS-dependent cold sensitivity. Since cysteine oxidation and proline hydroxylation regulate its activity, their association with oxaliplatin-induced TRPA1 activation and acquirement of cold sensitivity were investigated in the present study. A high concentration of oxaliplatin (1 mM) induced outward-rectifier whole-cell currents and increased the intracellular Ca2+ concentration in hTRPA1-expressing HEK293 cells, but did not increase the probability of hTRPA1 channel opening in the inside-out configuration. Oxaliplatin also induced the rapid generation of hydrogen peroxide, and the resultant Ca2+ influx was prevented in the presence of glutathione and in cysteine-mutated hTRPA1 (Cys641Ser)-expressing cells, whereas proline-mutated hTRPA1 (Pro394Ala)-expressing cells showed similar whole-cell currents and Ca2+ influx. By contrast, a lower concentration of oxaliplatin (100 µM) did not increase the intracellular Ca2+ concentration but did confer cold sensitivity on hTRPA1-expressing cells, and this was inhibited by PHD2 co-overexpression. Cold sensitivity was abolished by the mitochondria-targeting ROS scavenger mitoTEMPO and was minimal in cysteine-mutated hTRPA1 (Cys641Ser or Cys665Ser)-expressing cells. Thus, high oxaliplatin evokes ROS-mediated cysteine oxidation-dependent hTRPA1 activation independent of PHD activity, while a lower concentration induces cold-induced cysteine oxidation-dependent opening of hTRPA1 via PHD inhibition.

RESUMO

Predictors of survival in patients with stage II/III gastric cancer (GC) who received tegafur/gimeracil/oteracil (S-1) adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) subsequent to gastrectomy were examined. Additionally, the association between dose intensity of S-1 and survival rate was investigated. A total of 62 patients with stage II/III gastric cancer were retrospectively evaluated, each of whom had received a curative D2 gastrectomy and S-1 ACT. The relative performance (RP; administered/planned S-1 doses ×100%), body mass index (BMI), prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and body weight (BW) were calculated, and the association of survival with these factors and other clinicopathological parameters was examined. The 1-year treatment continuation rate for S-1 was 94.2%, excluding patients who experienced cancer recurrences during their ACT year. The initial S-1 reduction rate was 38.7%. Patients with stage II/IIIA disease exhibited significantly improved 5-year overall survival rates compared with patients with stage IIIB GC, 81.6/73.7 vs. 33.8% (P<0.01). No association between RP and survival was observed. BMI, BW and PNI were significantly decreased following surgery compared with preoperative states. In the univariate analysis, postoperative BW loss (BMI loss), pathological stage and >7 lymph node metastases were significantly associated with outcome (P<0.05); in the multivariate analysis, postoperative BW loss >10.6% and pathological stages were independent prognostic factors for survival. Continuing S-1 ACT for the full year exhibited a greater effect on survival compared with dosage. Early postoperative nutritional deterioration may decrease the survival rates in these patients.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Both gastric choriocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma are extremely rare, both accounting for approximately 0.1% of all gastric cancers. Therefore, simultaneous occurrence of gastric choriocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma is even rarer. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 84-year-old Japanese man was referred to our hospital with the chief complaint of dysphagia. Laboratory data showed iron deficiency anemia. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen revealed thickened wall of the stomach at the fundus and several enlarged abdominal lymph nodes. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a friable gastric tumor with necrosis in the gastric cardia extending to the abdominal esophagus. Small cell carcinoma was diagnosed based on pathological examination of biopsy specimens. The anemia, which was probably because of tumor bleeding, progressed despite repeated transfusion; therefore, a semi-urgent laparotomy was performed to control hemorrhage. Finally, total gastrectomy and lymph node resection were performed. Based on pathological findings, a diagnosis of collision tumor of choriocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma of the stomach was confirmed. DISCUSSION: When encountering large tumors with necrosis or hemorrhage in the stomach, the possibility of choriocarcinoma component should be considered. Moreover, when small cell carcinoma is morphologically suspected, even if slightly, additional immunohistochemical staining must be performed. CONCLUSION: This report detailed an extremely rare case of collision tumor of choriocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma of the stomach.
