OBJECTIVES: The objective of this investigation was to examine the mechanisms associated with antibiotic resistance in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia clinical isolates retrieved from hospitalized patients undergoing open heart surgery in a Heart Center located in Tehran, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This investigation encompassed a cross-sectional study of 60 S. maltophilia isolates, which were procured from diverse clinical specimens. Primary identification of the isolates was conducted through conventional microbiologic methods and subsequently verified by means of PCR primers. The E-test was utilized to establish the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). PCR was then employed to ascertain the antibiotic resistance genes (sul1, sul2, Smqnr and intl1 - intl3). RESULTS: In this study, a total of sixty clinical isolates of S. maltophilia were collected, with the majority of them being obtained from Intensive Care Units (ICU) (n = 54; 90%). The disk diffusion method yielded results indicating that 55% of the isolates were sensitive to minocycline, whereas 30% were intermediate and 15% were found to be resistant. Additionally, the MIC results revealed that the resistant rates of the isolates towards ceftazidime, cotrimoxazole and levofloxacin were 46.7%, 1.7% and 5%, respectively. The PCR amplification of three classes of integrons genes indicated that fifteen (25%) of the isolates carried int1, while no detection for intl2 and intl3 was reported. Furthermore, the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (sul1, sul2, and Smqnr) was identified in 15 (25%), 6 (10%), and 28 (46.7%) isolates, respectively. CONCLUSION: The reported increasing rate of antibiotic resistance and mobile genetic elements that could extend the resistance genes to other strains in the hospital, finally it could be an alarming issue for healthcare settings that need special attention to this strain and the epidemiological study on this issue.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the global, prevalence, and risk factors of fever after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: The high-sensitivity searching was conducted without time limitation until December 30, 2020 in Web of Sciences, Scopus, and PubMed based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The prevalence rates of fever and sepsis among patient undergoing PCNL were estimated 9.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 9.3%-9.7%), and 4.5% (95% CI: 4.2%-4.8%), respectively. Nephrostomy tube was used in 9.96% (95% CI: 9.94%-9.97%) of patients. The mean preoperative white blood cells of patients were 6.401×109/L; 18.3% and 4.55% of patients were considered as the positive urinary culture and pyuria, respectively. About 20.4% of patients suffered from residual stones. The odds ratios (ORs) of fever in patients who suffering from diabetes mellitus, hydronephrosis, staghorn stones, and blood transfusion were 4.62 (95% CI: 2.95-7.26), 1.04 (95% CI: 0.81-1.34), 2.57 (95% CI: 0.93-7.11), and 2.65 (95% CI: 1.62-4.35), respectively. Patients who underwent PCNL in prone position were more likely to develop fever (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 0.75-2.00) than patients in supine position. Conclusion: The current study showed that patients who suffer from diabetes mellitus, hydronephrosis, staghorn stones, nephrostomy tube or double-J stent, blood transfusion, and also patients who underwent PCNL in prone position surgery are more likely to develop a postoperative fever after PCNL.

Diet quality has been associated with mental health, and recently, there has been growing interest in the association between sustainability of diets and human health. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to explore the relationship between a newly developed dietary index for health and sustainability, and psychological disorders among Iranian women. Participants in this cross-sectional study included 479 women living in Tehran with no history of chronic disease. A validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intake. The World Index for Sustainability and Health (WISH) was calculated, consisting of four sub-scores: less healthy, healthy, low environmental impact, and high environmental impact. Participants psychological status was assessed using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21. Logistic regression models were used to examine the association between WISH and psychological disorders. Participant ages ranged from 20-50 years, with a mean age of 31.86 (SD:7.68) years. After adjusting for potential confounders (age, energy, BMI, marital status, education, family history of chronic disease, body satisfaction, socio-economic status, physical activity, smoking), women in the highest tertile of the healthy sub-score had significantly lower odds of experiencing depression (OR: 0.40; 95% CI: 0.24-0.67), anxiety (OR: 0.45; 95% CI: 0.23-0.87) and psychological distress (OR: 0.46; 95% CI: 0.28-0.77) compared to the reference group. Similarly, the less healthy sub-score was significantly associated with depression (OR: 0.51; 95% CI: 0.32-0.89), anxiety (OR: 0.44; 95% CI: 0.25-0.78), and psychological distress (OR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.36-0.90). An inverse association was observed between the low environmental impact sub-score and depression (OR: 0.32; 95% CI: 0.19-0.54), anxiety (OR: 0.38; 95% CI: 0.18-0.76), and psychological distress (OR: 0.30; 95% CI: 0.17-0.51). However, no further significant associations were found with the high environmental impact sub-score, except with depression (OR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.33-0.96). The healthy and low environmental impact sub-scores of the WISH were found to be inversely associated with depression, anxiety, and psychological distress. However, due to the cross-sectional study design, causality cannot be inferred. Further prospective studies are required to validate and expand upon these findings and explore potential mechanisms and alternative explanations, such as reverse causation. While this study suggests that choosing a diet that is both healthy for individuals and sustainable for the environment may be associated with lower risk of mental health issues among women, more research is needed.

BACKGROUND: The low-grade chronic inflammation in diabetes plays an important role in development of cardiovascular and renal complications. Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are recognized as protective agents for cardio-renal complications. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is positively associated with the pathophysiology of metabolic-related pathologies. The aim of this meta-analysis is to investigate the effect of SGLT2 inhibitors on blood IL-6 concentration in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: Embase, PubMed, and Scopus were systematically searched up to 1st of November 2023. The eligible studies were RCTs with adult population that had provided blood IL-6 for both control and intervention groups. Cochrane risk-of-bias tool were for study quality assessment. Data were analyzed using random effect model via Stata statistical software. RESULTS: Eighteen studies with a total of 5311 patients were included. Of which 3222 and 2052 patients were in intervention and control arm, respectively. Of the total population, 49.7% were men. The study durations ranged from 8 to 52 weeks. The pooled analysis showed a significant association between the use of SGLT2 inhibitors and lower IL-6 levels (standardized mean difference (SMD) = -1.04, Confidence Interval (CI): -1.48; -0.60, I2 = 96.93%). Dapagliflozin was observed to have a higher IL-6-lowering effect (SMD = -1.30, CI: -1.89; -0.71, I2 = 92.52) than empagliflozin or canagliflozin. Sub-group analysis of control groups (SMD = -0.58 (-1.01, -0.15) and -1.35 (-2.00, -0.70 for the placebo and active control sub-groups, respectively) and duration of interventions (SMD = -0.78 (-1.28, -0.28) and -1.20 (-1.86, -0.55) for study duration of ≤ 12 and > 12 weeks, respectively) did not change the results. Meta-regression analysis showed a significant correlation between the level of HbA1c and IL-6-lowering efficacy of SGLT2 inhibitors. CONCLUSION: IL-6 levels are significantly reduced with the use of SGLT2 inhibitors with HbA1c as the only marker influencing such reductions, and dapagliflozin had the highest potency. The anti-inflammatory effect of SGLT2 inhibitors supports their broader use to address diabetic complications related to inflammatory responses.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Iron deficiency anemia is a major health problem in female adolescents; so, the iron supplementation program has been implemented in Iranian female high school students for nearly two decades. This study aimed to assess the barriers and facilitators of the program. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted by cluster random sampling with a sample size of 399 high school girls from the northern, southern, eastern, western and central regions of Iran. To collect data, we applied valid and reliable researcher-made questionnaires. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 22 software using the chi-squared test. RESULTS: From the students' point of view, the most important reasons for not taking iron supplements were the bad taste of iron supplements, nausea after consumption, and not prescription of the iron supplement by physicians. Most the students believed that inviting health care professionals and movies or clips had the greatest impact on encouraging students to take supplements. About 45% of students reported that educational programs were not held for them, and only 28% of students received educational content/educational media about iron supplement. Also, 71% of students reported that there are not enough glasses for the consumption of supplement iron. There were significant relationships between iron supplements distributors (deputy assistant: 22.6% vs. 14.1%, P = 0.045), allocated enough time to intake iron supplements (72.0% vs. 37.1%, P < 0.001), implemented the educational program in schools (61.8% vs. 33%, P < 0.001), and the educator person of the program (health teachers: 42.7% vs. 35.7%, P = 0.039) with consumption of iron supplement by the students. CONCLUSION: To achieve the goals of the program, it is necessary paying attention to various aspects of the program such as providing better quality iron supplements, providing more appropriate environmental conditions, designing more attractive training programs, strengthening general announcement, and employing more experienced executive staff.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Several trials have evaluated the effects of folate supplementation on obesity indices. However, their results were inconsistent. Therefore, the current meta-analysis was conducted to summarize data from available randomized clinical trials (RCTs) about the impact of folate supplementation on weight and body mass index (BMI). METHOD: Medline/PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and ISI web of science were searched to identify relevant articles up to December 2020. The effect sizes were expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using the random-effects model. RESULTS: Pooled data from nine studies showed that folic acid supplementation did not change body weight (WMD: -0.16 kg, 95%CI: -0.47 to 0.16, P = 0.32) and BMI (WMD: -0.23 kg/m2, 95%CI: -0.49 to 0.03, P = 0.31), but there was significant heterogeneity between the included studies for BMI (I2 = 90.1%, P < 0.001). Moreover, subgroup analyses in level of homocysteine and health status indicated significant effect of folic acid supplementation on BMI in those with homocysteine level ≥15 µmol/L (WMD: -0.17 kg/cm2, -0.33 to -0.01, p = 0.03) and in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (WMD: - 0.30kg/cm2, -0.54 to -0.06, p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: Our outcomes demonstrated that folic acid improves BMI in those with homocysteine levels ≥15 µmol/L and women with PCOS.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this systematic review study was to determine the national, regional, and global prevalence of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) vaping. METHOD: The articles were searched in July 2020 without a time limit in Web of Science (ISI), Scopus, PubMed, and Ovid-MEDLINE. At first, the titles and abstracts of the articles were reviewed, and if they were appropriate, they entered the second stage of screening. In the second stage, the whole articles were reviewed and articles that met the inclusion criteria were selected. In this study, search, selection of studies, qualitative evaluation, and data extraction were performed by two authors independently, and any disagreement between the two authors was reviewed and corrected by a third author. RESULTS: In this study, the lifetime and current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping globally were 23% and 11%, respectively. Lifetime and current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in women were 16% and 8%, respectively. Also, lifetime and current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in men were 22% and 12%, respectively. In this study, the current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in who had lifetime smoked conventional cigarette was 39%, and in current smokers was 43%. The lifetime prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in the Continents of America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania were 24%, 26%, 16%, and 25%, respectively. The current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in the Continents of America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania were 10%, 14%, 11%, and 6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the popularity of e-cigarettes is increasing globally. Therefore, it is necessary for countries to have more control over the consumption and distribution of e-cigarettes, as well as to formulate the laws prohibiting about the e-cigarettes vaping in public places. There is also a need to design and conduct information campaigns to increase community awareness about e-cigarettes vaping.

Dyslipidemia has been linked to breast cancer incidence. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to further investigate the relationship between the serum lipid profile and breast cancer risk. Databases such as PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Sciences were searched up to the end of January 2021 using certain MeSH and non-MeSH keywords and combinations to extract related published articles. Twenty-six prospective studies involving 1,628,871 women, of whom 36,590 were diagnosed with breast cancer during the follow-up period met the inclusion criteria. A negative and significant association was found between the HDL-C level and the risk of breast cancer (relative risk (RR): 0.85, 95% CI: 0.72-0.99, I2: 67.6%, p = 0.04). In contrast, TG (RR: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.91-1.13, I2: 54.2%, p = 0.79), total cholesterol (TC) (RR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.90-1.06, I2: 67.2%, p = 0.57), apolipoprotein A (ApoA) (RR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.70-1.30, I2: 83.5%, p = 0.78) and LDL-C (RR: 0.93, 95% CI: 0.79-1.09, I2: 0%, p = 0.386) were not associated with breast cancer development. In studies adjusting for hormone use and physical activity, breast cancer risk was positively correlated with TC (RR: 1.05, 95% CI: 1.01-1.10). Similarly, TG was significantly related to breast cancer development after adjustment for baseline lipids (RR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.85-0.99) and race (any races mentioned in each study) (RR: 1.80, 95% CI: 1.22-2.65). In the present meta-analysis, HDL-C was inversely related to breast cancer risk. Overall, data on the links between lipids and breast cancer are conflicting. However, there is increasing evidence that low HDL-C is related to an increased risk for this type of malignancy.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the prevalence of smoking in women has increased significantly. This study aimed to explain the effective factors in the tendency to smoke in female adolescents, employing a qualitative method of content analysis in Mashhad, Iran. METHODS: The data for this conventional content analysis were obtained by conducting semi­structured interviews with 20 female adolescent smokers. For open coding, integrating codes, creating main category and subcategories, and extracting quotation associated with codes and subcategories, MAXQDA software version 10 was used. RESULTS: Based on the results of the study, one main category and six subcategories were identified to influence the decision to smoke. The main category was interconnection of psychological and gender experiences. The subcategories included self-management weakness, ignoring the side effects, gender orientation, negative psychological experiences, the attraction of cigarettes, and positive psychological experiences. CONCLUSION: Psychological and gender factors play an important role in initiating people's behavior and tendency to smoke and smoking prevention programs in educational settings need to focus efforts around what is known about young women smokers.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explain the socio-cultural and environmental factors of smoking tendency in female adolescents. METHODS: This qualitative content analysis study was conducted among Iranian female adolescents in Mashhad, Iran. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 female smokers. The duration of each interview varies from 30 to 70 min. Data collection and management of data were done using MAXQADA software version 10. RESULTS: In exploration the effective socio-cultural and environmental factors in the tendency of female adolescents to smoking, six subcategories of role modeling of friends, membership in groups, parenting patterns, family modeling, the predisposing community, and the negative impact of the media were extracted. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained in this study indicated that there is a need to formulate policies and adopt environmental and social laws to reduce smoking. The results also showed the effective role of parents in improving personal skills, creating a stress-free environment in the family, and controlling adolescent behavior. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to all social and cultural aspects in order to make the smoking prevention programs.

Background: Previous studies have proposed that the maternal intake of pre/probiotics may affect the immune composition of breast milk. Nevertheless, the available findings are contradictory. This meta-analysis aimed to examine the impact of maternal supplementation with pre/probiotics on the levels of total immunoglobulin A (IgA), secretory IgA (SIgA), transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-ß1), and TGF-2 in breast milk. Methods: PubMed and Scopus were systematically searched using a comprehensive search strategy for eligible randomized-controlled trials published up to February 2021. A random-effects model was applied to pool weighted mean difference and 95% confidence interval (CI) as effect size. Cochran's Q statistic and the I2 statistic were used to measure the between-study variance. Egger's regression test was used to assess publication bias. Results: A total of 12 different studies, with a total sample size of 1722 individuals (probiotic group: 858, placebo group: 864), were included in this meta-analysis. In the overall analysis, compared with placebo, maternal supplementation with pre/probiotics had no significant effect on concentrations of total IgA, SIgA, TGF-ß1, and TGF-ß2 in the breast milk. In the subgroup analysis, pre/probiotics did not affect total IgA, TGF-ß1, and TGF-ß2 in both colostrum/transitional and mature milk. However, a significant increase in SIgA was found in colostrum/transitional milk following pre/probiotic administration (WMD = 19.33, 95% CI: 0.83-37.83; p = 0.04), without evidence for remarkable heterogeneity (I2 = 0.0, p = 0.57). Conclusions: Maternal supplementation with pre/probiotics may increase SIgA in colostrum/transitional milk, without any effect on total IgA, TGF-ß1, and TGF-ß2.

There are few studies that evaluated the relationship between dietary diversity score (DDS) and risk of cancer. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of DDS with the risk of prostate cancer (PC) among Iranian men. This case-control study was performed among 60 cases with prostate cancer and 60 hospital-based controls. Anthropometric measurements were done and demographic information was recorded using standard protocols. A validated 160-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess usual dietary intakes. Also, Binary logistic regression was performed to estimate the risk of PC in relation to DDS. After controlling for several confounders (age, body mass index, physical activity, energy intake, job, education, and antihypertensive drugs usage) higher adherence to DDS (OR = 0.33; 95% CI (0.11-0.97)), fruits group (OR = 0.19; 95% CI (0.06-0.63)), and vegetables group (OR = 0.17; 95% CI (0.05 - 0.58)) were significantly associated with lower risk of PC. In contrast, greater adherence to the meat group (OR = 3.88; 95% CI (1.32-11.42)) was significantly associated with increased PC risk. Our results showed that adherence to a diet with higher DDS, especially higher amounts of fruits and vegetables and a lower amount of meat could decrease the risk of PC.

PURPOSE: Dietary factors may modulate inflammation status which contributed to the various chronic diseases like sarcopenia. Therefore, we aimed to examine the association of dietary inflammatory index (DII) and muscle strength (MS), muscle endurance (ME), and body composition. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 270 adults living in Tehran, Iran. The DII was calculated using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Body composition (fat-free mass (FFM), fat mass (FM), percent body fat (PBF), skeletal muscle mass (SMM)) was measured using body composition analyzer. Anthropometric measures (weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC)), were done. MS was measured by a digital handgrip dynamometer in both right (MSR) and left (MSL) hand. Mean of MSR and MSL was considered as MS. RESULTS: A significant decrease was found for MS (p < 0.01) and MSR (p < 0.01) across tertiles of DII. Participants who had greater scores of DII also had lower MER (p < 0.01), even after adjustment for confounding factors (age, sex, education status, income, smoking, physical activity, body mass index and energy intake) (p < 0.02). Adherence to DII was significantly related to MSL (p < 0.01), ME (p < 0.01), and ME of the MEL (p = 0.02) in the crude model, which was disappeared after controlling for covariates. Those in the third compared to the lowest tertile of DII, had no significant difference in mean of FFM (p < 0.001), SMM (p < 0.001), and WC (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Higher DII scores were associated with less muscle strength and endurance among Iranian adults. Further studies are needed to confirm the veracity of our results. BACKGROUND: Literature suggests higher cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is inversely related to chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease and hypertension. The aim of this study was to assess the association of Mediterranean dietary quality index (Med-DQI) with CRF and hypertension in a sample of Iranian adults. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study on 270 healthy men and women, aged 18-45 years. Dietary intake and physical activity level were assessed through a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ); and the International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ), respectively. Cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed by using a graded exercise treadmill test. The association between Med-DQI and CRF was investigated using multiple regression models. RESULTS: Participants in the top tertiles of Med-DQI, had higher VO2 max (mL/kg/min) (p = 0.02) and lower SBP (p = 0.01). When we controlled for age, sex, weight, smoking, physical activity and energy intake, the significant results were remained. Results of unadjusted linear regression shows that CRF was positively associated with cholesterol (p < 0.001) and fish (p < 0.001). Also, CRF was positively associated with vegetables and fruits (p < 0.001) and olive oil (p = 0.05). After adjustments for confounders, the significant associations of olive oil and cholesterol with CRF were disappeared while vegetables and fruits and total score of Med-DQI remained significant. There were no significant relations between saturated fatty acids meat, and cereals with Med-DQI. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated that Med-DQI was associated with better CRF in Iranian adults and SBP. Further studies with interventional approaches are needed to better clarify the causal inference of these associations.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To compare the effects of tadalafil, tamsulosin, and placebo as a medical expulsive therapy (MET) for distal ureteral calculi. Materials and Methods: This prospective randomized double-blind clinical trial was conducted on 132 renal colic patients with distal ureteric stones (≤10mm) over a period of 12 months. Patients were randomly divided into three groups. Patients in group A received tamsulosin 0.4mg, in group B received tadalafil 10mg, and in group C received placebo. Therapy was given for a maximum of 4 weeks. The rate of stone expulsion, duration of stone expulsion, the dose and the duration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), analgesic use, and adverse effects of drugs were recorded. Results: Demographic profiles were comparable between the 3 groups. Although the stone expulsion rate in group A (72.7%) was higher in comparison to group B(63.6%) and group C(56.8%), it was not considered statistically significant (P=0.294). Shorter mean time to stone expulsion was significantly observed in group A (17.75±75), than group B(21.13±1.17) and group C(22.25±1.18) (P=0.47). The mean number of analgesic use was 9.8±5.09 days in group A, 14.6±7.9 days in group B, and 12.6±22.25 days in group C, this difference was significant (P=0.004). The analgesic requirement (doses of NSAIDs and pethidine) in group A was significantly lower than other groups (P<0.05). Also, patients in group A reported fewer headaches compared to other groups (P=0.011). Conclusion: Tamsulosin as medical expulsive therapy is more effective for distal ureteric stones with less need for analgesics and less stone expulsion time than tadalafil.

BACKGROUND: The tendency of women to smoke has increased in recent years and the prevalence of smoking among women is increasing. The purpose of this study was to design and evaluation the psychometric properties of the smoking tendency questionnaire for Iranian female adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 604 female adolescents in Iran in 2021. The bank of questions was designed based on the qualitative study concepts and review of the literature. To perform the psychometric evaluation, steps such as face validity (qualitative), content validity (qualitative and quantitative) and construct validity (confirmatory factor analysis) were performed. The reliability of the instrument was assessed using McDonald's omega coefficient and Cronbach's alpha coefficient. RESULTS: Based on the results of psychometrics (face, content, and construct validity), the number of questions was reduced from 102 to 52, and 50 questions were removed. Finally, a questionnaire with 52 questions and 5 subscales of the tendency to experience smoking (14 items), re-experience smoking (8 items), cigarette dependence (9 items), intention to quit smoking (9 items), and smoking cessation (12 items) was approved. The content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI) for all questions were 0.770 and 0.938, respectively. The Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients for all questions were 0.903 and 0.904, respectively. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this questionnaire, 52 questions, and 5 subscales can be used to assess the tendency of female adolescents to cigarette smoking.

OBJECTIVE: The relative contribution of health promotion models (HPM) to improve health-related behaviours in intervention programmes is still limited. Here, we tested whether Pender's HPM operationalised in the educational intervention was effective to modify nutrition and physical activity (PA) behaviours among Iranian women. DESIGN: A randomised controlled field trial evaluating the efficacy of an educational intervention based on Pender's HPM to improve PA and nutrition behaviours from August 2016 to October 2016. R version 3.0.2 and SPSS version 16 were used to conduct multiple statistical analyses. SETTING: Ten public healthcare centres in Bojnourd, Iran were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. The experimental group received the full intervention programme, which included nine 4-h training sessions and consulting support via phone contact and social media group. The control group did not receive any intervention. PARTICIPANTS: Women aged 4-6 years (n 202) were randomised to intervention (n 102) and control conditions (n 100) and completed baseline and 3-month follow-up. RESULTS: In the experimental group, the intervention programme had a significant effect (P < 0·05) on all construct of Pender's HPM and behaviour outcome, and the estimates for prior behaviours, self-efficacy, interpersonal influences, feeling, perceived benefits and barriers, commitment and behaviour outcomes in the intervention group were 0·72 (95 % CI 0·31, 0·98), 0·54 (95 % CI 0·27, 0·71), 0·74 (95 % CI 0·27, 0·91), 0·52 (95 % CI 0·19, 0·75), 0·62 (95 % CI 0·22, 0·91), 0·63 (95 % CI 0·30, 0·86) and 0·56 (95 % CI 0·37, 0·85), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Educational intervention based on Pender's HPM was feasible and highly acceptable to modify PA and nutrition behaviours in the women population.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that choline and betaine are associated with improved anthropometric measures including, BMI and waist circumference however, results are largely inconsistent and limited studies exist in children. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between dietary choline and betaine, and anthropometric measurements among Iranian children. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, dietary information was collected for 788 six-year-old children, who attended Tehran health centers in 2018. We measured dietary intakes using a valid and reliable semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The USDA database was used to calculate dietary choline and betaine. We assessed anthropometric characteristics, physical activity, and socio-demographic status based on a reliable and valid protocol. Logistic regression adjusted for energy, physical activity, socio-economic status, and maternal age, physical activity, BMI, and HEI2015 was used to assess this association. RESULTS: Free choline, glycero-phospho-choline, phospho-choline, phosphatidyl-choline, total choline, and total betaine, and choline were not related to overweight, obesity, underweight and wasting in the crude and adjusted model after controlling for children's energy intake, children's physical activity, socio-economic status, maternal physical activity, and BMI. Betaine intake was associated with mid-arm circumference and risk of overweight. CONCLUSIONS: We did not find any evidence to support the association between dietary choline with anthropometric measurements among Iranian children. Further prospective studies with a large sample size in different populations are needed.

OBJECTIVE: Some observational studies investigated the association between dietary energy density (DED) and risk of cancers with inconstant results. In addition, there is no study on such association among patients with prostate cancer (PC). The present study was performed to evaluate the association between dietary energy density (DED) and PC risk. METHODS: In this case-control study, one hundred and twenty-five participants were enrolled (62 cases and 63 controls). Dietary intakes were assessed using 160-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. In addition, demographic characteristics were collected using a general questionnaire and anthropometric indices were measured based on the available guidelines. The association between DED and PC risk was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: The results showed that higher DED score was associated with increased risk of PC (OR = 2.59; 95% CI= (1.24-5.40)). Interestingly, after adjusting for potential confounders ((smoking, physical activity, energy intake, education, ethnicity, job, anti-hyperlipidemic drugs, antihypertensive drugs, and aspirin) the results remained significant (OR = 2.87; 95% CI= (1.17-7.05)). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that DED may increase the risk of PC. However, more prospective studies are warranted to confirm these results.

Our purpose was to assess the association between plant-based dietary patterns and breast cancer (BrCa) among Iranian women. This hospital-based case-control study included 150 newly diagnosed BrCa cases and 150 age-matched controls from the Cancer Research Center, Imam Khomeini hospital, Iran. Three indices of a plant-based diet were first calculated: plant-based diet index (PDI), the healthy PDI (hPDI), and the unhealthy PDI (uPDI). In the overall PDI, all plant foods scored positively. In hPDI and uPDI, healthy and less healthy plant foods scored positive, respectively. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) in the highest adherence of PDI was 1.00 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.55-1.83). In hPDI, 0.89 (95% CI, 0.49-1.62); in uPDI, 1.80 (95% CI, 0.95-3.42). The adjusted OR after subgroup analysis for body mass index (BMI) was as follow, BMI > 25: 0.77(95% CI, 0.37-1.61) comparing highest with the lowest tertile of PDI, 0.91(95% CI, 0.44-1.89) comparing highest with the lowest tertile of hPDI and this value for uPDI was 2.04 (95% CI, 0.91-4.56). BMI < 25: OR for top tertile of PDI was 1.82 (95% CI, 0.48-6.93), top tertile of hPDI was 1.47 (95% CI, 0.35-6.22) and top tertile of uPDI was 2.29 (95% CI, 0.54-9.70). Our results revealed no significant association between none of the PDIs and the chance of BrCa in Iranian women. Continued and expanded research, evaluated by different methods and BrCa is urgently needed to build the foundation for future progress in evidence-based public health efforts.
