RESUMO

The present study aimed to establish an effective prognostic nomogram model based on the Naples prognostic score (NPS) for resectable thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). A total of 277 patients with ESCC, who underwent standard curative esophagectomy and designated as study cohort, were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into different groups, including NPS 0, NPS 1, NPS 2, and NPS 3 or 4 groups, for further analysis, and the results were validated in an external cohort of 122 ESCC patients, who underwent surgery at another cancer center. In our multivariate analysis of the study cohort showed that the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage, systemic inflammation score, and NPS were the independent prognostic factors for the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) durations. In addition, the differential grade was also an independent prognostic factor for the OS in the patients with ESCC after surgery (all P < .05). The area under the curve of receiver operator characteristics for the PFS and OS prediction with systemic inflammation score and NPS were 0.735 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.676-0.795, P < .001) and 0.835 (95% CI 0.786-0.884, P < .001), and 0.734 (95% CI 0.675-0.793, P < .001) and 0.851 (95% CI 0.805-0.896, P < .001), respectively. The above independent predictors for OS or PFS were all selected in the nomogram model. The concordance indices (C-indices) of the nomogram models for predicting OS and PFS were 0.718 (95% CI 0.681-0.755) and 0.669 (95% CI 0.633-0.705), respectively, which were higher than that of the 7th edition of American Joint Committee on Cancer TNM staging system [C-index 0.598 (95% CI 0.558-0.638) for OS and 0.586 (95% CI 0.546-0.626) for PFS]. The calibration curves for predicting the 5-year OS or PFS showed a good agreement between the prediction by nomogram and actual observation. In the external validation cohort, the nomogram discrimination for OS was better than that of the 7th edition of TNM staging systems [C-index: 0.697 (95% CI 0.639-0.755) vs 0.644 (95% CI 0.589-0.699)]. The calibration curves showed good consistency in predicting the 5-year survival between the actual observation and nomogram predictions. The decision curve also showed a higher potential of the clinical application of predicting the 5-years OS of the proposed nomogram model as compared to that of the 7th edition of TNM staging systems. The preoperative NPS-based nomogram model had a certain potential role for predicting the prognosis of ESCC patients.

PURPOSE: To explore the predictive potential of intratumoral and multiregion peritumoral radiomics features extracted from multiparametric MRI for predicting pathological differentiation in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. METHODS: A total of 265 patients with 277 HCCs (training cohort n = 193, validation cohort n = 84) who underwent preoperative MRI were retrospectively analyzed. The risk factors identified through stepwise regression analysis were utilized to construct a clinical model. Radiomics models based on MRI (arterial phase, portal venous phase, delayed phase) across various regions (entire tumor, Peri_5mm, Peri_10mm, Peri_20mm) were developed using the LASSO approach. The features obtained from the intratumoral region and the optimal peritumoral region were combined to design the IntraPeri fusion model. Model performance was assessed using the area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS: Larger size, non-smooth margins, and mosaic architecture were risk factors for poorly differentiated HCC (pHCC). The clinical model achieved AUCs of 0.77 and 0.73 in the training and validation cohorts, respectively, while the intratumoral model achieved corresponding AUC values of 0.92 and 0.82. The Peri_10mm model demonstrated superior performance to the Peri_5mm and Peri_20mm models, with AUC values of 0.87 vs. 0.84 vs. 0.73 in the training cohort and 0.80 vs. 0.77 vs. 0.68 in the validation cohort, respectively. The IntraPeri model exhibited remarkable AUC values of 0.95 and 0.86 in predicting pHCC in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights the potential of a multiparametric MRI-based radiomic model that integrates intratumoral and peritumoral features as a tool for predicting HCC differentiation. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Both clinical and multiparametric MRI-based radiomic models, particularly the intratumoral radiomic model, are non-invasive tools for predicting HCC differentiation. Importantly, the IntraPeri fusion model exhibited remarkable predictiveness for individualized HCC differentiation. KEY POINTS: • Both the intratumoral radiomics model and clinical features were useful for predicting HCC differentiation. • The Peri_10mm radiomics model demonstrated better diagnostic ability than other peritumoral region-based models. • The IntraPeri radiomics fusion model outperformed the other models for predicting HCC differentiation.

Histology slide, tissue microbes, and the host gene expression can be independent prognostic factors of colorectal cancer (CRC), but the underlying associations and biological significance of these multimodal omics remain unknown. Here, we comprehensively profiled the matched pathological images, intratumoral microbes, and host gene expression characteristics in 527 patients with CRC. By clustering these patients based on histology slide features, we classified the patients into two histology slide subtypes (HSS). Onco-microbial community and tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) were also significantly different between the two subtypes (HSS1 and HSS2) of patients. Furthermore, variation in intratumoral microbes-host interaction was associated with the prognostic heterogeneity between HSS1 and HSS2. This study proposes a new CRC classification based on pathological image features and elucidates the process by which tumor microbes-host interactions are reflected in pathological images through the TIME.

Intratumoral microbiota can regulate the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) and mediate tumor prognosis by promoting inflammatory response or inhibiting anti-tumor effects. Recent studies have elucidated the potential role of local tumor microbiota in the development and progression of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). However, whether intratumoral microbes are involved in the TIME that mediates the prognosis of LUAD remains unknown. Here, we obtained the matched tumor microbiome and host transcriptome and survival data of 478 patients with LUAD in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Machine learning models based on immune cell marker genes can predict 1- to 5-year survival with relative accuracy. Patients were stratified into high- and low-survival-risk groups based on immune cell marker genes, with significant differences in intratumoral microbial communities. Specifically, patients in the high-risk group had significantly higher alpha diversity (p < 0.05) and were characterized by an enrichment of lung cancer-related genera such as Streptococcus. However, network analysis highlighted a more active pattern of dominant bacteria and immune cell crosstalk in TIME in the low-risk group compared to the high-risk group. Our study demonstrated that intratumoral microbiota-immune crosstalk was strongly associated with prognosis in LUAD patients, which would provide new targets for the development of precise therapeutic strategies.

Hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (HPND) broke out in 2015 in the Eriocheir sinensis aquaculture region of Xinghua, Jiangsu Province; however, the specific cause of HPND remains unclear. A correlation was found between HPND outbreak and the use of deltamethrin by farmers. In this study, E. sinensis specimens developed the clinical symptoms of HPND after 93 days of deltamethrin stress. The growth of E. sinensis with HPND was inhibited. Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a central regulator of energy homeostasis, and its expression was up-regulated in the intestine of E. sinensis with HPND. Growth inhibitory genes (EsCabut, Es4E-BP, and EsCG6770) were also up-regulated in the intestine of E. sinensis with HPND. The expression levels of EsCabut, Es4E-BP, and EsCG6770 decreased after EsAMPK knockdown. Therefore, AMPK mediated the growth inhibition of E. sinensis with HPND. Further analysis indicated the presence of a crosstalk between the Toll and AMPK signaling pathways in E. sinensis with HPND. Multiple genes in the Toll signaling pathway were upregulated in E. sinensis under 93 days of deltamethrin stress. EsAMPK and its regulated growth inhibition genes were down-regulated after the knockdown of genes in the Toll pathway. In summary, the crosstalk between the Toll and AMPK signaling pathways mediates the growth inhibition of E. sinensis under deltamethrin stress.

Secalonic acid F (SAF) is a fungal secondary metabolite exhibited interesting pharmacological effect. In this study, a simple and sensitive ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (UPLC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the determination of SAF in rat plasma. Emodin was selected as the internal standard (IS), and plasma samples were prepared by liquid-liquid extraction with ethyl acetate. Chromatographic separation was operated on an Agilent SB-C18 column, and the mobile phase was a mixture of 0.5% formic acid in water and methanol (V:V = 20:80) at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min. Detection was carried out with a 6460 triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer using electrospray ionization in the multiple-reaction monitoring mode. The MS/MS ion transitions monitored were m/z 639.3 â†’ 415.4 and 269.0 â†’ 225.1 for SAF and IS, respectively. Results showed the calibration curve of SAF was linear in the range of 2-500 ng·mL-1 with the correlation coefficient > 0.99. The matrix effect, extraction recovery, dilution effect, intraday and inter-day precision and accuracy were all in acceptable limits. The analytes were also stable under different conditions. The validated method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study after oral administration in Sprague-Dawley rats at a dose of 10 mg/kg.

HYPOTHESIS: Oleosomes are natural oil droplets with a unique phospholipid/protein membrane, abundant in plant seeds, from which they can be extracted and used in emulsion-based materials, such as foods, cosmetics and pharmaceutics. The lubrication properties of such materials are essential, on one hand, due to the importance of the in-mouth creaminess for the consumed products or the importance of spreading the topical creams. Therefore, here, we will evaluate the lubrication properties of oleosomes, and how these properties are affected by the components at the oleosome membrane. EXPERIMENT: Oleosomes were extracted, and their oral lubricating properties were evaluated using tribology. To understand the influence of the oil droplet membrane composition, reconstituted oleosomes were also studied, with membranes that differed in protein/lecithin ratio. Additionally, whey protein- and lecithin-stabilised emulsions were used as reference samples. Confocal laser scattering microscopy was used to study the samples visually before and after tribological analysis. FINDINGS: Oleosomes followed a ball-bearing mechanism, which was probably related to their high physical stability due to the presence of membrane proteins. When the membrane protein concentration at the surface was reduced, the droplet stability weakened, leading to plating-out lubrication. Following our results, we elucidated the oleosome lubrication mechanism and showed their possible control by changing the membrane composition.

The self-assembly of the lanthanide metal-organic frameworks presents a formidable challenge but profound significance. Compared with the metal-organic frameworks based on 4f-3d ions, the chemistry of 4f-3p metal-organic frameworks has not been fully explored so far. In this study, two lanthanide-aluminum-based clusters [Ln6Al(IN)10(µ3-OH)5(µ3-O)3(H2O)8]·xH2O (x = 2, Ln = Gd, abbreviated as Gd6Al; x = 2.5, Ln = Eu, abbreviated as Eu6Al; HIN = isonicotinic acid) have been meticulously designed and obtained by hydrothermal reaction at low pH. The crystallographic study revealed that both Gd6Al and Eu6Al clusters exhibit an unprecedented sandwiched metal-organic framework holding a highly ordered honeycomb network. To our knowledge, it is the first case of Ln-Al-based cluster-organic frameworks. Furthermore, magnetic investigation of Gd6Al manifests a decent magnetic entropy change of -ΔSmmax = 28.8 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K for ΔH = 7.0 T. Significantly, the introduction of AlIII ions into the lanthanide metal-organic frameworks displays excellent solid-state luminescent capability with a lifetime of 371.6 µs and quantum yield of 6.64%. The construction and investigation of these two Ln-Al clusters represent great progress in the 4f-3p metal-organic framework.

It is a major challenge to perform one-pot hydroxylation of benzene to phenol under mild conditions, which replaces the environmentally harmful cumene method. Thus, finding highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts that can be recycled is extremely significant. Herein, a (POM)-based hybrid compound {[FeII(pyim)2(C2H5O)][FeII(pyim)2(H2O)][PMoV2MoVI9VIV3O42]}·H2O (pyim = 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole) (Fe2-PMo11V3) was successfully prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using typical Keggin POMs, iron ions and pyim ligands. Single-crystal diffraction shows that the Fe-pyim unit in Fe2-PMo11V3 forms a stable double-supported skeleton by Fe-O bonding to the polyacid anion. Remarkably, due to the introduction of vanadium, Fe2-PMo11V3 forms a divanadium-capped conformation. Benzene oxidation experiments indicated that Fe2-PMo11V3 can catalyze the benzene hydroxylation reaction to phenol in a mixed solution of acetonitrile and acetic acid containing H2O2 at 60 °C, affording a phenol yield of about 16.2% and a selectivity of about 94%.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. The liver and lungs are the most common sites for infection. Infection of the intradural spine is rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old woman of Han ethnicity presented with a chronic history of recurrent lumbar pain. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine revealed the classical characteristic of multiple cystic lesions of variable sizes, manifesting a "bunch of grapes" appearance, localized within the spinal canal at the L4-L5 vertebral level. In the meanwhile, metagenomic next-generation sequencing identified Echinococcosis granulosa. The patient underwent surgery to remove the cyst entirely and subsequently took albendazole 400 mg orally twice daily for 6 months. CONCLUSION: Spinal CE should be suspected in patients with multiple spinal cystic lesions and zoonotic exposure. metagenomic next-generation sequencing serves as a robust diagnostic tool for atypical pathogens, particularly when conventional tests are inconclusive. Prompt and aggressive treatment for spinal cystic echinococcosis is imperative, and further research is warranted for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

The associations between cancer and bacteria/fungi have been extensively studied, but the implications of cancer-associated viruses have not been thoroughly examined. In this study, we comprehensively characterized the cancer virome of tissue samples across 31 cancer types, as well as blood samples from 23 cancer types. Our findings demonstrated the presence of viral DNA at low abundances in both tissue and blood across major human cancers, with significant differences in viral community composition observed among various cancer types. Furthermore, Cox regression analyses conducted on four cancers, including Head and Neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC), Kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC), Stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD), and Uterine Corpus Endometrial Carcinoma (UCEC), revealed strong correlation between viral composition/abundance in tissues and patient survival. Additionally, we identified virus-associated prognostic signatures (VAPS) for these four cancers, and discerned differences in the interplay between VAPS and dominant bacteria in tissues among patients with varying survival risks. Notably, clinically relevant analyses revealed prognostic capacities of the VAPS in these four cancers. Taken together, our study provides novel insights into the role of viruses in tissue in the prognosis of multiple cancers and offers guidance on the use of tissue viruses to stratify prognosis for patients with cancer.

Numerous studies have shown that different subtypes of breast cancer (BC) have significant differences in terms of the tumor microbiome, host gene expression, and histopathological image, whereas the biological links between these cancer-associated indicators are still unknown. Here, we performed a comprehensive analysis with 610 patients of the four subtypes of BC with matched tissue microbiota, host transcriptome, and histopathological image samples. Correlation analysis showed that the composition of intratumoral viruses shaped the tumor microenvironment (TME) of patients with BC, and the TME was further reflected in the histopathological images. Of the four subtypes, patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) had unique intratumoral viral community composition, non-cancer cell infiltration in the TME, and histopathological image characteristics. Furthermore, we detected multiple virus-cell-image association axes in TNBC, in which tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) have clinical prognostic implication. This study provides a comprehensive map of the associations between the intratumoral virome, TME, and histopathological image of TNBC, as well as insights into disease prognosis that can be crucial for precise therapeutic intervention strategies.

Background. Local recurrence and distant metastasis are the main causes of death in patients with cancer. Only considering species abundance changes when identifying markers of recurrence and metastasis in patients hinders finding solutions.Hypothesis. Consideration of microbial abundance changes and microbial interactions facilitates the identification of microbial markers of tumour recurrence and metastasis.Aim. This study aims to simultaneously consider microbial abundance changes and microbial interactions to identify microbial markers of recurrence and metastasis in multiple cancer types.Method. One thousand one hundred and six non-RM (patients without recurrence and metastasis within 3 years after initial surgery) tissue samples and 912 RM (patients with recurrence or metastasis within 3 years after initial surgery) tissue samples representing 11 cancer types were collected from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA).Results. Tumour tissue bacterial composition differed significantly among 11 cancers. Among them, the tissue microbiome of four cancers, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC), lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC), stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD) and uterine corpus endometrial carcinoma (UCEC), showed relatively good performance in predicting recurrence and metastasis in patients, with areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUCs) of 0.78, 0.74, 0.91 and 0.93, respectively. Considering both species abundance changes and microbial interactions for the four cancers, a combination of nine genera (Niastella, Schlesneria, Thioalkalivibrio, Phaeobacter, Sphaerotilus, Thiomonas, Lawsonia, Actinobacillus and Spiroplasma) performed best in predicting patient survival.Conclusion. Taken together, our results imply that comprehensive consideration of microbial abundance changes and microbial interactions is helpful for mining bacterial markers that carry prognostic information.

Enhancers determine spatiotemporal gene expression programs by engaging with long-range promoters1-4. However, it remains unknown how enhancers find their cognate promoters. We recently developed a RNA in situ conformation sequencing technology to identify enhancer-promoter connectivity using pairwise interacting enhancer RNAs and promoter-derived noncoding RNAs5,6. Here we apply this technology to generate high-confidence enhancer-promoter RNA interaction maps in six additional cell lines. Using these maps, we discover that 37.9% of the enhancer-promoter RNA interaction sites are overlapped with Alu sequences. These pairwise interacting Alu and non-Alu RNA sequences tend to be complementary and potentially form duplexes. Knockout of Alu elements compromises enhancer-promoter looping, whereas Alu insertion or CRISPR-dCasRx-mediated Alu tethering to unregulated promoter RNAs can create new loops to homologous enhancers. Mapping 535,404 noncoding risk variants back to the enhancer-promoter RNA interaction maps enabled us to construct variant-to-function maps for interpreting their molecular functions, including 15,318 deletions or insertions in 11,677 Alu elements that affect 6,497 protein-coding genes. We further demonstrate that polymorphic Alu insertion at the PTK2 enhancer can promote tumorigenesis. Our study uncovers a principle for determining enhancer-promoter pairing specificity and provides a framework to link noncoding risk variants to their molecular functions.

Microbiome-based diagnosis of cancer is an increasingly important supplement for the genomics approach in cancer diagnosis, yet current models for microbiome-based diagnosis of cancer face difficulties in generality: not only diagnosis models could not be adapted from one cancer to another, but models built based on microbes from tissues could not be adapted for diagnosis based on microbes from blood. Therefore, a microbiome-based model suitable for a broad spectrum of cancer types is urgently needed. Here we have introduced DeepMicroCancer, a diagnosis model using artificial intelligence techniques for a broad spectrum of cancer types. Built based on the random forest models it has enabled superior performances on more than twenty types of cancers' tissue samples. And by using the transfer learning techniques, improved accuracies could be obtained, especially for cancer types with only a few samples, which could satisfy the requirement in clinical scenarios. Moreover, transfer learning techniques have enabled high diagnosis accuracy that could also be achieved for blood samples. These results indicated that certain sets of microbes could, if excavated using advanced artificial techniques, reveal the intricate differences among cancers and healthy individuals. Collectively, DeepMicroCancer has provided a new venue for accurate diagnosis of cancer based on tissue and blood materials, which could potentially be used in clinics.

BACKGROUND: Erectile dysfunction (ED) and weakness of the penis are processes related to hemodynamic alteration. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), as a new mechanical modality for the treatment of ED, deserves to be explored in depth for the biomechanical mechanisms it exerts. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the role of YAP/TAZ-mediated mechanotransduction in mechanical therapy for the treatment of neurogenic erectile dysfunction (NED). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two male SD rats (12 w old) were randomly divided into sham-operated (n = 14), bilateral cavernous nerve injury (BCNI, n = 14), and LIPUS-treated (n = 14) groups. Intracavernosal pressure/mean arterial pressure (ICP/MAP) was measured 14 and 28 days after treatment. Penile tissue specimens were collected for pathological examination, and the changes in YAP, TAZ, connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), CYR61, LATS1, and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase expression levels were assessed by Western blot, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and immunological staining. RESULTS: Compared with BCNI, LIPUS significantly improved ICP/MAP levels and enhanced histopathological changes. The penile expression levels of YAP, TAZ, CTGF, and CYR61 were significantly downregulated in the BCNI group (p < 0.01), and LIPUS upregulated the expression levels of these proteins (p < 0.05). The expression levels of p-LATS1 and LATS1 were not significantly different among the groups (p > 0.05). Interestingly, the expression level of p-p38/p38 significantly increased in BCNI rats (p < 0.05), which was reversed by LIPUS treatment (p < 0.05). However, the p38 inhibitor SB203580 did not change the expression of YAP/TAZ in rat primary smooth muscle cells or mouse MOVAS cells (p > 0.05). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: LIPUS can effectively improve penile erectile function in NED rats. The underlying mechanism may be related to the regulation of YAP/TAZ-mediated mechanotransduction. However, the upstream regulatory signal may differ from the classical Hippo pathway.

Differences in tissue microbiota-host interaction between lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) and lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) about recurrence and metastasis have not been well studied. In this study, we performed bioinformatics analyses to identify the genes and tissue microbes significantly associated with recurrence or metastasis. All lung cancer patients were divided into the recurrence or metastasis (RM) group and the nonrecurrence and nonmetastasis (non-RM) group according to whether or not they had recurred or metastasized within 3 years after the initial surgery. Results showed that there were significant differences between LUAD and LUSC in gene expression and microbial abundance associated with recurrence and metastasis. Compared with non-RM, the bacterial community of RM had a lower richness in LUSC. In LUSC, host genes significantly correlated with tissue microbe, whereas host-tissue microbe interaction in LUAD was rare. Then, we established a novel multimodal machine learning model based on genes and microbes to predict the recurrence and metastasis risk of a LUSC patient, which achieves an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.81. In addition, the predicted risk score was significantly associated with the patient's survival. IMPORTANCE Our study elucidates significant differences in RM-associated host-microbe interactions between LUAD and LUSC. Besides, the microbes in tumor tissue could be used to predict the RM risk of LUSC, and the predicted risk score is associated with patients' survival.

The alkali method was used to prepare soybean protein isolate (SPI) and procyanidin B2 (PCB2) complexes, and the interaction between SPI and PCB2 was studied using multi-spectroscopic methods. The human hepatoma (HepG2) cell hyperlipidemia model was used to explore whether SPI-PCB2 has the potential for synergistic hypolipidemia. According to the findings, PCB2 was primarily linked to SPI via C-S and C-N bonds, and the addition of PCB2 reduced the α-helix structure content of SPI by 4.1%. At the cellular level, the optimal SPI-PCB2 ratio for lowering blood lipids was 1:1. Compared with the model group, the TG content and TC content in the 1:1 group were reduced by 28.7% and 26.3%, respectively. Western blot analysis revealed that SPI-PCB2 = 1:1 exerted synergistic hypolipidemic activity mainly by activating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase α (AMPKα) phosphorylation, inhibiting 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGCR) and fatty acid synthetase (FAS) protein expression, and upregulating carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1A (CPT1A) protein activity.

The preparation of biodegradable polymer foams with a stable high volume-expansion ratio (VER) is challenging. For example, poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) foams have a low melt strength and high shrinkage. In this study, polylactic acid (PLA), which has a high VER and crystallinity, was added to PBAT to reduce shrinkage during the supercritical molded-bead foaming process. The epoxy chain extender ADR4368 was used both as a chain extender and a compatibilizer to mitigate the linear chain structure and incompatibility and improve the foamability of PBAT. The branched-chain structure increased the energy-storage modulus (G') and complex viscosity (η*), which are the key factors for the growth of cells, by 1-2 orders of magnitude. Subsequently, we innovatively used the CO2 and N2 composite gas method. The foam-shrinkage performance was further inhibited; the final foam had a VER of 23.39 and a stable cell was obtained. Finally, after steam forming, the results showed that the mechanical strength of the PBAT/PLA blended composite foam was considerably improved by the addition of PLA. The compressive strength (50%), bending strength, and fracture load by bending reached 270.23 kPa, 0.36 MPa, and 23.32 N, respectively. This study provides a potential strategy for the development of PBAT-based foam packaging materials with stable cell structure, high VER, and excellent mechanical strength.

Curcumin is one of the most studied chemo-preventive agents, which may cause suppression, retardation, or inversion of carcinogenesis. But its application is currently limited because of its poor water-solubility and bioaccessibility. A curcumin O/W emulsion was prepared by high-pressure homogenization, using triglyceride monolaurate as an emulsifier and medium chain triglycerides (MCT) as the oil phase. The effects of emulsifiers, emulsifier concentration, oil type, oil-to-water ratio, and homogenization pressure and processing cycles on the physical stability and droplet size distribution of curcumin-encapsulated O/W emulsions were evaluated in this study. The results showed that the mean droplet size of the O/W emulsions remained remarkably stable during 60 days of storage under both light and dark conditions. Curcumin retentions in O/W emulsions after 60 days of storage under light and dark conditions were 97.9% and 81.6%, respectively. In addition, during the simulated gastrointestinal digestion process, the mean droplet size of the O/W emulsions increased from 260 nm to 2743 nm after incubation with simulated gastric fluid (SGF) for 24 h, while the mean droplet size remained unchanged after incubation with simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). The results displayed negligible changes in curcumin content during incubation with simulated gastrointestinal fluids, indicating that effective protection of curcumin was achieved by encapsulation in the O/W emulsion. It is expected that curcumin will acquire high bioaccessibility and bioavailability when the O/W emulsion is to be used in clinical applications.
