RESUMO

Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common liver malignancy in children, accounting for approximately 60 % of liver tumors in this population. However, the exact cause of HB remains unclear. The combination of surgery and neoadjuvant chemotherapy has significantly improved the overall survival rate of children with HB, increasing it from 40 % in the past to over 70 %. The concept of precise hepatectomy, which aims to achieve the best rehabilitation outcomes with minimal trauma and maximum liver protection, has been widely accepted by hepatobiliary surgeons. This article provides a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in surgical treatment of HB, focusing on digital surgery and minimally invasive techniques.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Hisense computer-assisted surgery system (CAS) in teaching pediatric liver surgical anatomy. METHODS: The research subjects were residents who underwent standardized training at the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Yijishan Hospital of Wannan Medical College from May 2022 to May 2023. RESULTS: The study recruited a total of 62 students, with 31 students assigned to the Hisense CAS group (12 males and 19 females) and the remaining 31 students serving as controls (Control group, 15 males and 16 females). There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics observed between the two groups. This study found that the average scores of the Hisense CAS teaching group in the liver surgery evaluations were higher than those of the control group. Specifically, the Hisense CAS group had an average score of 84.25 ± 5.70 points in the liver surgery knowledge test, 77.10 ± 8.12 points in the image reading test, and 70.58 ± 8.79 points in the surgical simulation test, while the traditional teaching group had average scores of 73.45 ± 6.12 points, 69.81 ± 6.05 points, and 66.42 ± 6.61 points, respectively; the differences between the two groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Furthermore, this study also found that the Hisense CAS teaching model resulted in significantly better teaching satisfaction on the part of the residents in terms of standardized teaching for physicians in pediatric liver surgical anatomy. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, this study demonstrated greater satisfaction of the residents with the use of 3D reconstruction added to traditional teaching sessions and better performance during the posttraining evaluation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To observe the clinical efficacy of moxibustion as an adjunctive treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) based on conventional medication and its effects on serum sclerostin (SOST) and ß-catenin levels, exploring the potential mechanisms by which moxibustion may protect joint bones in RA patients. METHODS: Seventy-six RA patients were randomly divided into an observation group (38 cases, 3 cases dropped out) and a control group (38 cases, 4 cases were eliminated, 2 cases dropped out). The patients in the control group were treated with conventional oral medication; based on the treatment of the control group, the patients in the observation group were treated with moxibustion. The direct moxibustion was applied at Zusanli (ST 36) on both sides and ashi points around small joints, and indirect moxibustion was applied at Shenshu (BL 23) on both sides and ashi points around large joints. The treatment was given three times a week for a total of 5 weeks. The count of pain and swollen joint, morning stiffness score, disease activity score of 28 joints (DAS28), visual analogue scale (VAS) score, health assessment questionnaire (HAQ) score, and serum levels of SOST, ß-catenin, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were evaluated before and after treatment in the two groups. RESULTS: Compared those before treatment, after treatment, both groups showed a reduction in pain and swollen joint count (P<0.01, P<0.05), morning stiffness, DAS28, VAS, and HAQ scores (P<0.01, P<0.05), with the observation group having lower scores than the control group (P<0.01). Serum levels of SOST, ß-catenin, and TNF-α after treatment in the observation group were lower than those in both before treatment and the control group (P<0.01, P<0.05). There was a positive correlation between the difference in serum ß-catenin levels before and after treatment and the difference in serum SOST (r=0.578, P<0.001) and TNF-α (r=0.403, P<0.05) levels in the observation group. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to medication, moxibustion as an adjunctive treatment could significantly alleviate joint pain and reduce disease activity in RA patients, suggesting a potential role in joint protection. This mechanism may be related to the inhibition of the inflammatory factor TNF-α, regulation of ß-catenin levels, and reduction in the production of the endogenous negative regulator protein SOST within the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of single-incision laparoscopy appendectomy (SILA) and traditional three-hole laparoscopy appendectomy (THLA) for the treatment of acute appendicitis in children. Methods: The clinical data of children (<14 years old) who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy at Yijishan Hospital of Wannan Medical College, Hubei Provincial Maternal Health Hospital and Qingdao Women and Children's Medical Center from January 2019 to June 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the operation method, the patients were assigned to the SILA group or the THLA group. The clinical data, including the efficacy, and the surgical details, including the complications, of the two surgical methods were compared. The personal information of the children and the time of disease onset were recorded. Results: In this study, the data of 588 patients, including 385 patients in the THLA group and 203 patients in the SILA group were collected. The baseline characteristics between the two groups of patients before surgery were comparable. There was no significant difference in the average operation time between the THLA group and the SILA group (56.31 ± 1.83 min vs. 57.48 ± 1.15 min, P > 0.05). There was also no significant difference in the average length of hospital stay between the THLA group and the SILA group (6.91 ± 0.24 days vs. 7.16 ± 0.36 days, P > 0.05). However, the FLACC scores of the SILA group (3.71 ± 0.78) were significantly lower than those of the THLA group (3.99 ± 0.56) on the second postoperative day, and the difference was significant (P < 0.05). The score of the questionnaire evaluating cosmetic appearance of the postoperative abdomen was significantly higher in the SILA group (15.81 ± 0.36) than in the THLA group (13.10 ± 0.24) (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative complications between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: SILA is more advantageous in terms of postoperative FLACC scores and cosmetic appearance in children than THLA. There was no significant difference in the incidence of complications or other aspects between the two surgical methods.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of moxibustion on the contents of leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin-17 (IL-17), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and matrix metalloproteinase -9 (MMP-9) in serum, and explore the protection mechanisms of moxibustion in the patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: A total of 64 patients with RA were randomly divided into treatment group (n=31) and control group (n=33). The patients in the control group were treated with conventional medication for consecutive 5 weeks. Based on the treatment in the control group, the patients in the treatment group were treated with moxibustion at bilateral Shenshu (BL23), Zusanli (ST36) and Ashi points, 3 times a week, for consecutive 5 weeks. Separately, the visual analogue scale (VAS) score, morning stiffness score, the number of tender joints, the number of swollen joints, the score of the disease activity score of 28 joints (DAS28) were observed; the contents of rheumatoid factor (RF), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reative protein (CRP) in serum were determined by biochemical method; and the contents of LTB4, IL-17, TNF-α and MMP-9 in serum were detected by using ELISA before and after treatment in the patients of both groups. RESULTS: After treatment, VAS score, morning stiffness score, the number of tender joints, the number of swollen joints, DAS28 score, the contents of serum RF in both groups, and contents of serum CRP, ESR, LTB4, IL-17, TNF-α and MMP-9 in the treatment group were significantly reduced when compared with those before treatment (P<0.01, P<0.05). After treatment, VAS score, morning stiffness score, the number of tender joints, the number of swollen joints, DAS28 score, and the levels of LTB4, IL-17 and MMP-9 in serum were obviously lower in the treatment group when compared with the control group (P<0.01, P<0.05). In the treatment group, the changes before and after treatment in the levels of LTB4, IL-17 and TNF-α were positively correlated with that of MMP-9 (P<0.05, r>0). CONCLUSION: Moxibustion at BL23 and ST36 combined with conventional medication significantly relieves joint pain and reduce disease activity in RA patients, which may be related to the modulation of LTB4, IL-17 and MMP-9 by moxibustion.

RESUMO

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an CT-based radiomics nomogram for the preoperative differentiation of focal-type autoimmune pancreatitis from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Methods: 96 patients with focal-type autoimmune pancreatitis and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma have been enrolled in the study (32 and 64 cases respectively). All cases have been confirmed by imaging, clinical follow-up and/or pathology. The imaging data were considered as: 70% training cohort and 30% test cohort. Pancreatic lesions have been manually delineated by two radiologists and image segmentation was performed to extract radiomic features from the CT images. Independent-sample T tests and LASSO regression were used for feature selection. The training cohort was classified using a variety of machine learning-based classifiers, and 5-fold cross-validation has been performed. The classification performance was evaluated using the test cohort. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was then used to develop a radiomics nomogram model, containing the CT findings and Rad-Score. Calibration curves have been plotted showing the agreement between the predicted and actual probabilities of the radiomics nomogram model. Different patients have been selected to test and evaluate the model prediction process. Finally, receiver operating characteristic curves and decision curves were plotted, and the radiomics nomogram model was compared with a single model to visually assess its diagnostic ability. Results: A total of 158 radiomics features were extracted from each image. 7 features were selected to construct the radiomics model, then a variety of classifiers were used for classification and multinomial logistic regression (MLR) was selected to be the optimal classifier. Combining CT findings with radiomics model, a prediction model based on CT findings and radiomics was finally obtained. The nomogram model showed a good sensitivity and specificity with AUCs of 0.87 and 0.83 in training and test cohorts, respectively. The areas under the curve and decision curve analysis showed that the radiomics nomogram model may provide better diagnostic performance than the single model and achieve greater clinical net benefits than the CT finding model and radiomics signature model individually. Conclusions: The CT image-based radiomics nomogram model can accurately distinguish between focal-type autoimmune pancreatitis and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients and provide additional clinical benefits.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recently, tranexamic acid (TXA) and epsilon aminocaproic acid (EACA) have been applied in total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, doubts in clinicians' minds about which medicine is more efficient and economical in THA need to be clarified. Therefore, this study compared the efficacy and cost of the intraoperative administration of TXA and EACA per surgery in decreasing perioperative blood transfusion rates in THA. METHODS:  This study enrolled patients who underwent THA between January 2019 to December 2020. A total of 295 patients were retrospectively divided to receive topical combined with intravenous TXA (n = 94), EACA (n = 97) or control (n = 104). The primary endpoints included transfusions, estimated perioperative blood loss, cost per patient and the drop in the haemoglobin and haematocrit levels. RESULTS: Patients who received EACA had greater total blood loss, blood transfusion rates, changes in HGB levels and mean cost of blood transfusion per patient (P < 0.05) compared with patients who received TXA. In addition, both TXA and EACA groups had significantly fewer perioperative blood loss, blood transfusion, operation time and changes in haemoglobin and haematocrit levels than the control group (P < 0.05). Cost savings in the TXA and EACA groups were 736.00 RMB and 408.00 RMB per patient, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The application of perioperative antifibrinolytics notably reduces the need for perioperative blood transfusions. What's more, this study demonstrated that TXA is superior to EACA for decreasing blood loss and transfusion rates while at a lower cost per surgery. These results indicate that TXA may be the optimum antifibrinolytics for THA in Chinese area rather than EACA.

RESUMO

Regenerative involution is important for the subsequent lactation, but molecular mechanism has not been revealed. The crucial miRNA in tissue development indicates that miRNAs might participate in regenerative involution. In the present study, the mammary tissues of the dairy goats (n = 3) were collected via biopsy at wk-8 (time to dry off), -6, -4, -1, and + 1 relative to lambing for the Hematoxylin and Eosin staining and miRNA sequencing. Alveolar structures collapsed during regenerative involution, but the structures remained intact and distended. Among the 50 miRNA expression trajectories categorized by short time-series expression miner, two significant patterns were clustered. The differentially expressed miRNAs in the two patterns were mainly related to the self-renewal of tissue and enriched in pathways containing vesical-mediated transport, tissue development, tube development, vasculature development and epithelial development. The identification of the miRNAs will help in elucidating their regulatory roles in mammary gland development.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The incidence and mortality of thyroid cancer (TC) has been steadily rising in the past decades. It is imperative to have a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying TC development and identify novel therapeutic targets. This study characterized the role of lncRNA CALML3-AS1 (CALML3-AS1) in the development of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). METHOD: Related mRNAs expression were validated in the tumor and adjacent normal tissues from 52 PTC patients and PTC cell lines by qRT-PCR. Expression of RBM38 was detected by Western blot. We have also conducted CCK-8 and colony formation assays were used to detect the effect of CALML3-AS1 on cell proliferation, Transwell assay was utilized to evaluate cell migration and invasion, apoptosis detected by flow cytometry assay, RNA pull-down and luciferase assays were performed to validate gene predictions. RESULTS: The results indicated that the expression of both CALML3A-S1 and RBM38 were significantly downregulated in PTC tissues (p < 0.01), while the expression of miR-20a-5p was increased in PTC (p < 0.01). Functionally, CALML3-AS1 overexpression inhibited PTC cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, CALML 3-AS1 sponged miR-20a-5p, which in turn leads to the suppression of RBM38 expression and PTC progression. CONCLUSIONS: CALML3-AS1 functions as a ceRNA for miR-20a-5p in the regulation of the expression of RBM38 in PTC. Higher level of CALML3-AS1 serves as a good prognostic indicator of survival in PTC patients. Targeting CALML3-AS1/ miR-20a-5p/RBM38 axis may represent a novel therapeutic strategy in the treatment of PTC.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of moxibustion on joint swelling and pain and the levels of C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 1 (CXCL1), ß-endorphin (ß-EP) in serum of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and to investigate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic mechanism of moxibustion on improving RA. METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with RA were randomly and equally classified into the control and treatment groups. The control group was treated with routine drug therapy, while the treatment group received routine drug therapy and moxibustion. Both groups were treated for eight weeks. The symptoms and laboratory indicators of RA patients were compared in the two groups before and after intervention. RESULTS: Sixty-one patients completed the study: four patients dropped out from the treatment group and three from the control group. Trial endpoints were change (∆) in symptoms, measured by Ritchie's articular index (RAI), swollen joint count (SJC), and laboratory indicators, measured by the level of CXCL1, ß-EP, tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-α), and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß). ∆RAI, ∆SJC, ∆CXCL1, ∆ß-EP, ∆TNF-α, and ∆IL-1ß in the treatment group were superior to the control group (13.50 [14.50] versus 6.00 [13.00] in ∆RAI, 4.00 [3.00] versus 2.00 [4.00] in ∆SJC, 0.04 ± 0.79 ng/mL versus -0.01 ± 0.86 ng/mL in ∆CXCL1, -2.43 [5.52] pg/mg versus -0.04 [4.09] pg/mg in ∆ß-EP, 3.45 [5.90] pg/mL versus 1.55 [8.29] pg/mL in ∆TNF-α, and 6.15 ± 8.65 pg/mL versus 1.28 ± 8.51 pg/mL in ∆IL-1ß; all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Moxibustion can improve the joint swelling and pain symptoms in patients with RA, which may be related to the fact that moxibustion can reduce the release of inflammatory factors in patients with RA and downregulate the level of CXCL1 and increase the level of ß-EP at the same time. This trial is registered with ChiCTR-IOR-17012282.

RESUMO

Dichloroacetate (DCA) commonly occurs in the environment due to natural production and anthropogenic releases, but its fate under anoxic conditions is uncertain. Mixed culture RM comprising "Candidatus Dichloromethanomonas elyunquensis" strain RM utilizes DCA as an energy source, and the transient formation of formate, H2, and carbon monoxide (CO) was observed during growth. Only about half of the DCA was recovered as acetate, suggesting a fermentative catabolic route rather than a reductive dechlorination pathway. Sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons and 16S rRNA gene-targeted quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) implicated "Candidatus Dichloromethanomonas elyunquensis" strain RM in DCA degradation. An (S)-2-haloacid dehalogenase (HAD) encoded on the genome of strain RM was heterologously expressed, and the purified HAD demonstrated the cofactor-independent stoichiometric conversion of DCA to glyoxylate at a rate of 90 ± 4.6 nkat mg-1 protein. Differential protein expression analysis identified enzymes catalyzing the conversion of DCA to acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA) via glyoxylate as well as enzymes of the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway. Glyoxylate carboligase, which catalyzes the condensation of two molecules of glyoxylate to form tartronate semialdehyde, was highly abundant in DCA-grown cells. The physiological, biochemical, and proteogenomic data demonstrate the involvement of an HAD and the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway in the anaerobic fermentation of DCA, which has implications for DCA turnover in natural and engineered environments, as well as the metabolism of the cancer drug DCA by gut microbiota.IMPORTANCE Dichloroacetate (DCA) is ubiquitous in the environment due to natural formation via biological and abiotic chlorination processes and the turnover of chlorinated organic materials (e.g., humic substances). Additional sources include DCA usage as a chemical feedstock and cancer drug and its unintentional formation during drinking water disinfection by chlorination. Despite the ubiquitous presence of DCA, its fate under anoxic conditions has remained obscure. We discovered an anaerobic bacterium capable of metabolizing DCA, identified the enzyme responsible for DCA dehalogenation, and elucidated a novel DCA fermentation pathway. The findings have implications for the turnover of DCA and the carbon and electron flow in electron acceptor-depleted environments and the human gastrointestinal tract.

RESUMO

During the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in humans, a D614G substitution in the spike glycoprotein (S) has emerged; virus containing this substitution has become the predominant circulating variant in the COVID-19 pandemic1. However, whether the increasing prevalence of this variant reflects a fitness advantage that improves replication and/or transmission in humans or is merely due to founder effects remains unknown. Here we use isogenic SARS-CoV-2 variants to demonstrate that the variant that contains S(D614G) has enhanced binding to the human cell-surface receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), increased replication in primary human bronchial and nasal airway epithelial cultures as well as in a human ACE2 knock-in mouse model, and markedly increased replication and transmissibility in hamster and ferret models of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our data show that the D614G substitution in S results in subtle increases in binding and replication in vitro, and provides a real competitive advantage in vivo-particularly during the transmission bottleneck. Our data therefore provide an explanation for the global predominance of the variant that contains S(D614G) among the SARS-CoV-2 viruses that are currently circulating.

RESUMO

The reinforcement and matrix of a polymer material can be composited into a single polymer composite (SPC), which is light weight, high strength, and has easy recyclability. The insert injection molding process can be used to realize the multiple production of SPC products with a short cycle time and wide processing temperature window. However, injection molding is a very complicated process; the influence of several important parameters should be determined to help in the future tailoring of SPCs to specific applications. The effects of varying barrel temperature, injection pressure, injection speed, and holding time on the properties of the insert-injection molded polypropylene (PP) SPC parts were investigated. It was found that the sample weight and tensile properties of the PP SPCs varied in different rules with the variations of these four parameters. The barrel temperature has a significant effect, followed by the holding time and injection pressure. Suitable parameter values should be determined for enhanced mechanical properties. Based on the tensile strength, a barrel temperature of 260 °C, an injection pressure of 127.6 MPa, an injection speed of 0.18 m/s, and a holding time of 60 s were determined as the optimum processing conditions. The best tensile strength and peel strength were up to 120 MPa and 19.44 N/cm, respectively.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has become a chronic disease, serious harm to human health. Complications of the blood pipe are the main cause of disability and death in diabetic patients, including vascular lesions that directly affects the prognosis of patients with diabetes and survival. This study was to determine the influence of high glucose and related mechanism of vascular lesion of type 2 diabetes mellitus pathogenesis. METHODS: In vivo aorta abdominalis of GK rats was observed with blood pressure, heart rate, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Masson, and Verhoeff staining. In vitro cells were cultured with 30 mM glucose for 24 h. RT-QPCR was used to detect the mRNA expression of endothelial markers PTEN, PI3K, Akt, and VEGF. Immunofluorescence staining was used to detect the expression of PTEN, PI3K, Akt, and VEGF. PI3K and Akt phosphorylation levels were detected by Western blot analysis. RESULTS: Heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and mean blood pressure in the GK control group were higher compared with the Wistar control group and no difference compared with the GK experimental model group. Fluorescence intensity of VEGF, Akt, and PI3K in the high-sugar stimulus group was stronger than the control group; PTEN in the high-sugar stimulus group was weakening than the control group. VEGF, Akt, and PI3K mRNA in the high-sugar stimulus group were higher than the control group; protein expressions of VEGF, Akt, and PI3K in the high-sugar stimulus group were higher than the control group. PTEN mRNA in the high-sugar stimulus group was lower than the control group. Protein expression of PTEN in the high-sugar stimulus group was lower than the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Angiogenesis is an important pathogenesis of T2DM vascular disease, and PTEN plays a negative regulatory role in the development of new blood vessels and can inhibit the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN) is the most common form of primary glomerular disease with unclear molecular mechanisms, which related to immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. Our study intended to identify potential long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and genes, and to determine the potential molecular mechanisms of CGN pathogenesis. METHODS: The microarray of GSE64265 and GSE46295 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, GSE64265 including 3 rats control kidney tissues and 5 rats model kidney tissues, GSE46295 including 3 rats control kidney tissues and 3 rats model kidney tissues, which was on the basis of GPL1355 platform. Identification of differentially expressed lncRNAs and mRNAs were performed between the 2 groups. Gene ontology (GO) and pathway enrichment analyses were performed to analyze the biological functions and pathways for the differentially expressed mRNAs. LncRNA-mRNA weighted co-expression network was constructed using the WGCNA package to analyses for the genes in the modules. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was visualized. RESULTS: A total of 40 significantly up-regulated and 24 down-regulated lncRNAs, 653 up-regulated and 128 down-regulated mRNAs were identified. Additionally, Cdk1, with the highest connectivity degree in PPI network, was noteworthy enriched in cell cycle. Seven lncRNAs: NONRATT026650, LOC102547664, NONRATT77021989, NONRATT012453, LOC102551856, LOC102553536 and NONRATT7047175 were observed in the modules of lncRNA-mRNA weighted co-expression network. CONCLUSIONS: LncRNAs NONRATT026650, LOC102547664, NONRATT77021989, NONRATT012453, LOC102551856, LOC102553536 and NONRATT7047175 were differentially expressed and might play important roles in the development of CGN. Key genes, such as Cd44, Rftn1, Runx1, may be crucial biomarkers for CGN.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of pre-slaughter transport during summer and subsequent water shower spray on stress, postmortem glycolysis, energy metabolism and adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in Pectoralis major (PM) muscle of broilers. Results indicated that transport during high ambient temperature induced the release of plasma corticosterone, which significantly affected stress conditions. Moreover, we found a lower energy status in the early postmortem period compared to the control group. AMPK was activated in this situation, following by the rapid glycolysis and accumulation of lactic acid, leading to a high incidence of pale, soft, exudative (PSE)-like meat. Water shower spray with resting after transport relieved the stress situation, recovered energy homeostasis and lessened the deterioration of meat quality. As a key molecular target for the control of energy status, AMPK has a similar potential in regulating postmortem muscle glycolysis of broilers as in mammals.

RESUMO

Effects of water-misting sprays with forced ventilation on post mortem glycolysis, adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and meat quality of broilers after transport during summer were investigated in the present paper. A total of 105 mixed-sex Arbor Acres broilers were divided into three treatment groups: (i) 45 min transport without rest (T); (ii) 45 min transport with 1 h rest (TR); and (iii) 45 min transport with 15 min water-misting sprays with forced ventilation and 45 min rest (TWFR). Each treatment consisted of five replicates with seven birds each. The results indicated that the water-misting sprays with forced ventilation could mitigate the stress caused by transport under high temperature conditions during summer, which reduced the energy depletion in post mortem Pectoralis major (PM) muscle. This resulted in a higher energy status compared to the T group, which would decrease the expression of phosphorylation of AMPK (p-AMPK). Furthermore, decreased the expression of p-AMPK then slowed down the rate of glycolysis in post mortem PM muscle during the early post mortem period, which in turn lessened the negative effects caused by transport on meat quality. In conclusion, water-misting sprays with forced ventilation may be a better method to control the incidence of the pale, soft and exudative meat in broilers.
