BACKGROUND: The Center for Personalized Precision Medicine of Tuberculosis (cPMTb) was constructed to develop personalized pharmacotherapeutic systems for tuberculosis (TB). This study aimed to introduce the cPMTb cohort and compare the distinct characteristics of patients with TB, non-tuberculosis mycobacterium (NTM) infection, or latent TB infection (LTBI). We also determined the prevalence and specific traits of polymorphisms in N-acetyltransferase-2 (NAT2) and solute carrier organic anion transporter family member 1B1 (SLCO1B1) phenotypes using this prospective multinational cohort. METHODS: Until August 2021, 964, 167, and 95 patients with TB, NTM infection, and LTBI, respectively, were included. Clinical, laboratory, and radiographic data were collected. NAT2 and SLCO1B1 phenotypes were classified by genomic DNA analysis. RESULTS: Patients with TB were older, had lower body mass index (BMI), higher diabetes rate, and higher male proportion than patients with LTBI. Patients with NTM infection were older, had lower BMI, lower diabetes rate, higher previous TB history, and higher female proportion than patients with TB. Patients with TB had the lowest albumin levels, and the prevalence of the rapid, intermediate, and slow/ultra-slow acetylator phenotypes were 39.2%, 48.1%, and 12.7%, respectively. The prevalence of rapid, intermediate, and slow/ultra-slow acetylator phenotypes were 42.0%, 44.6%, and 13.3% for NTM infection, and 42.5%, 48.3%, and 9.1% for LTBI, respectively, which did not differ significantly from TB. The prevalence of the normal, intermediate, and lower transporter SLCO1B1 phenotypes in TB, NTM, and LTBI did not differ significantly; 74.9%, 22.7%, and 2.4% in TB; 72.0%, 26.1%, and 1.9% in NTM; and 80.7%, 19.3%, and 0% in LTBI, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding disease characteristics and identifying pharmacokinetic traits are fundamental steps in optimizing treatment. Further longitudinal data are required for personalized precision medicine. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study registered ClinicalTrials.gov NO. NCT05280886.

BACKGROUND: Denosumab (DMB) is a bone antiresorptive agent used to treat osteoporosis or metastatic cancer of the bones. However, denosumab-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (DRONJ) has become a common complication in cancer patients. The prevalence of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in cancer patients is estimated to be similar for both bisphosphonate-related cases (1.1 to 1.4%) and denosumab-related cases (0.8 to 2%), with the addition of adjunctive therapy with anti-angiogenic agents reportedly increasing its prevalence to 3%. (Spec Care Dentist 36(4):231-236, 2016). The aim of this study is to report on DRONJ in cancer patients treated with DMB (Xgeva®, 120mg). CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we identified four cases of ONJ among 74 patients receiving DMB therapy for metastatic cancer. Of the four patients, three had prostate cancer and one had breast cancer. Preceding tooth extraction within 2 months of the last DMB injection was found to be a risk factor for DRONJ. Pathological examination revealed that three patients had acute and chronic inflammation, including actinomycosis colonies. Among the four patients with DRONJ referred to us, three were successfully treated without complications and had no recurrence following surgical treatment, while one did not follow up. After healing, one patient experienced a recurrence at a different site. Sequestrectomy in conjunction with antibiotic therapy and cessation of DMB use proved to be effective in managing the condition, and the ONJ site healed after an average 5-month follow-up period. CONCLUSION: Conservative surgery, along with antibiotic therapy and discontinuation of DMB, was found to be effective in managing the condition. Additional studies are needed to investigate the contribution of steroids and anticancer drugs to jaw bone necrosis, the prevalence of multicenter cases, and whether there is any drug interaction with DMB.

Mesenchymal stromal cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iMSCs) have been proposed as alternative sources of primary MSCs with various advantages for cell therapeutic trials. However, precise evaluation of the differences between iMSCs and primary MSCs is lacking due to individual variations in the donor cells, which obscure direct comparisons between the two. In this study, we generated donor-matched iMSCs from individual bone marrow-derived MSCs and directly compared their cell-autonomous and paracrine therapeutic effects. We found that the transition from primary MSCs to iMSCs is accompanied by a functional shift towards higher proliferative activity, with variations in differentiation potential in a donor cell-dependent manner. The transition from MSCs to iMSCs was associated with common changes in transcriptomic and proteomic profiles beyond the variations of their individual donors, revealing expression patterns unique for the iMSCs. These iMSC-specific patterns were characterized by a shift in cell fate towards a pericyte-like state and enhanced secretion of paracrine cytokine/growth factors. Accordingly, iMSCs exhibited higher support for the self-renewing expansion of primitive hematopoietic progenitors and more potent immune suppression of allogenic immune responses than MSCs. Our study suggests that iMSCs represent a separate entity of MSCs with unique therapeutic potential distinct from their parental MSCs, but points to the need for iMSC characterization in the individual basis.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral cleft lip repair is one of the most difficult surgeries, and many techniques have been modified and developed to improve surgical outcomes. The current trend is toward preserving tissue as much as possible. When the reconstruction is based on the shape of the patient's own tissue, the most natural appearance is produced, and the relaxed remaining tissue can be benefitted from reducing tension and minimizing scarring. CASE PRESENTATION: In the conventional surgical method, the rest of the prolabium is sacrificed, except for the tissue used to make the philtrum. We used all tissues for surgery and did not discard any. The tubercle of the median vermilion was used in its original form. CONCLUSIONS: It is fundamental to restore function in cleft lip surgery. Both patients and surgeons have a desire for esthetic outcomes that go beyond function. In addition, the measure of the success of the surgery is the postoperative resemblance to normal midfacial features. Unlike the conventional method of making tubercles by collecting lateral vermilion flaps, we preserved the tissue of the prolabium. Rather than using an artificial tubercle, we were able to create a more natural shape of the upper lip using the patient's own anatomical structure. In addition, the remaining tissues of the discarded prolabium were used to make the oral mucosa, which may help to reduce tension compared to the conventional method. The modified repair method is expected to gradually become the mainstream method owing to its superior esthetic outcome and less surgical difficulty compared with traditional methods.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop and validate five machine learning models designed to predict actinomycotic osteomyelitis of the jaw. Furthermore, this study determined the relative importance of the predictive variables for actinomycotic osteomyelitis of the jaw, which are crucial for clinical decision-making. METHODS: A total of 222 patients with osteomyelitis of the jaw were analyzed, and Actinomyces were identified in 70 cases (31.5%). Logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, artificial neural network, and extreme gradient boosting machine learning methods were used to train the models. The models were subsequently validated using testing datasets. These models were compared with each other and also with single predictors, such as age, using area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). RESULTS: The AUC of the machine learning models ranged from 0.81 to 0.88. The performance of the machine learning models, such as random forest, support vector machine and extreme gradient boosting was significantly superior to that of single predictors. Presumed causes, antiresorptive agents, age, malignancy, hypertension, and rheumatoid arthritis were the six features that were identified as relevant predictors. CONCLUSIONS: This prediction model would improve the overall patient care by enhancing prognosis counseling and informing treatment decisions for high-risk groups of actinomycotic osteomyelitis of the jaw.

BACKGROUND: Although unintentional pregnancy loss is common, national representative statistics are lacking in high-income East Asian countries undergoing rapid demographic changes. It is necessary to confirm the income inequality of pregnancy loss even in universal national health insurance. METHOD: Using National Health Insurance Service data between 2008 and 2014, the annual prevalence of pregnancy loss was enumerated, and differences in pregnancy loss according to age and income levels were assessed by multivariable Poisson regression. Joint-point regression was used to examine the trend of pregnancy loss. RESULT: On average, there was a 15.0% annual pregnancy loss among 3,941,020 pregnancy cases from 2008 to 2014. Pregnancy loss inequality increased stepwise with income levels except for the highest income group. After adjusting for income levels, the annual percent change of age-standardized prevalence significantly increased by 2.6% every year since 2011. CONCLUSION: Even in high-income countries with universal national health insurance, income inequality in pregnancy loss is observed. Further appraisal is needed to explain the increasing trend of pregnancy loss between 2011 and 2014 even after adjusting income.

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are benign soft tissue neoplasms of mature adipose tissue commonly occurring in the trunk or extremities. But, intraoral lipomas are rare entities which may be only noticed during routine dental examinations. Especially intramuscular lipomas on the tongue have been reported very rarely. In this study, we report a case of intramuscular lipoma on tongue, with a review of the literature from 1978 to 2019, providing data on age, gender, location, presenting symptoms, size, surgical methods, and recurrence. CASE PRESENTATION: A case of intramuscular lipoma occurring in tongue region in a 65-year-old male is reported. Surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment for the lesion. In order to decrease the deformity and discomfort after the excision, we tried to modify surgical technique using enveloped mucosal flap. This technique provided more comfortable healing procedure on the operative site without recurrence. CONCLUSION: This is a rare case of large intramuscular lipoma on tongue. Surgical excision with enveloped mucosal flap design was performed to diminish postoperative raw surface and discomfort and a 24-month follow-up showed excellent healing without any recurrence. A case of intramuscular lipoma on tongue and relevant literature reviews are presented in this study.

The therapeutic applications of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been actively explored due to their broad anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. However, the use of xenogeneic components, including fetal bovine serum (FBS), in the expansion media might pose a risk of xenoimmunization and zoonotic transmission to post-transplanted patients. Here, we extensively compared the physiological functions of human Wharton's jelly-derived MSCs (WJ-MSCs) in a xeno-free medium (XF-MSCs) and a medium containing 10% FBS (10%-MSCs). Both groups showed similar proliferation potential; however, the 10%-MSCs showed prolonged expression of CD146, with higher colony-forming unit-fibroblast (CFU-F) ability than the XF-MSCs. The XF-MSCs showed enhanced adipogenic differentiation potential and sufficient hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) niche activity, with elevated niche-related markers including CXCL12. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the XF-MSCs had a significantly higher suppressive effect on human peripheral blood-derived T cell proliferation, Th1 and Th17 differentiation, as well as naïve macrophage polarization toward an M1 phenotype. Among the anti-inflammatory molecules, the production of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) and nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) was profoundly increased, whereas cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) was decreased in the XF-MSCs. Finally, the XF-MSCs had an enhanced therapeutic effect against mouse experimental colitis. These findings indicate that xeno-free culture conditions improved the immunomodulatory properties of WJ-MSCs and ex vivo-expanded XF-MSCs might be an effective strategy for preventing the progression of colitis.

The most common congenital anomalies are congenital heart defects, cleft lip and palate, Down syndrome, and neural tube defects. Anesthetic considerations for Down syndrome include cervical spine instability, history of congenital heart disease, risk of bradycardia, hematologic, endocrine, and behavioral considerations. Patients with cleft lip and palate can have associated syndromes, and the potential for underlying abnormalities should be investigated prior to their anesthetic. A major anesthetic consideration for neural tube defect surgery is positioning for intubation. Fetal surgery for myelomeningocele has been shown to reduce the need for ventriculoperitoneal shunting and improved motor outcomes.

Zygoma reduction malarplasty is a standard procedure primarily performed in Asia on patients who prefer an oval facial shape. The technique is well established and standardized. However, the esthetic results are frequently unsatisfactory or accompanied by complications such as nonunion, malunion, and cheek drooping. These complications are generally attributed to postoperative bone fragment movement. In this study, we present an improvement to this standard procedure that involves modifying the surgical technique. With our suggested modification, the chance of displacement is decreased because of increased locking resulting from greater surface-to-surface contact between the posterior bone segments. Moreover, the prominence of the anterior zygoma is maintained, whereas posterior zygoma width is slightly decreased. In our technique, fixation is performed only in the zygoma body area, and posterior fixation can be avoided. In addition, in cases where fixation is not performed, the protrusion of the posterior aspect of the articular tubercle can be decreased by grinding. We believe that the modified technique has the potential to markedly improve the treatment outcomes of zygoma reduction malarplasty.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical relevance of autogenous fresh demineralized tooth (Auto-FDT) prepared at chairside immediately after extraction for socket preservation. Teeth were processed to graft materials in block, chip, or powder types immediately after extraction. Extraction sockets were filled with these materials and dental implants were installed immediately or after a delay. A panoramic radiograph and a conebeam CT were taken. In two cases, tissue samples were taken for histologic examination. Vertical and horizontal maintenance of alveolar sockets showed some variance depending on the Auto-FDT and barrier membrane types used. Radiographs showed good bony healing. Histologic sections showed that it guided good new bone formation and resorption pattern of the Auto-FDT. This case series shows that Auto-FDT prepared at chairside could be a good material for the preservation of extraction sockets. This study will suggest the possibility of recycling autogenous tooth after immediate extraction.

Tumor development and progression are multistep processes that involve local tumor growth and invasion, followed by metastasis. The aggressiveness of the tumor is the major determinant of the mortality of oral cancer patients. The present study investigates whether the expression levels of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1) and PRDX6 are associated with the development, proliferation, differentiation and recurrence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The mRNA expression levels of COX-2, NF-κB, PRDX1 and PRDX6 were examined in 50 OSCC specimens and 19 normal oral mucosae by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). qPCR analysis showed that the mRNA levels of COX-2 in OSCC were significantly higher than those in the normal oral mucosae (P=0.021). The expression levels of PRDX1 in high-stage tumors (T3 and T4) were significantly elevated compared with those in low-stage tumors (T1) (P=0.047). Additionally, the expression levels of NF-κB in the high-grade tumor were significantly elevated compared with those in the low-grade tumors (P=0.030). Overall, it was indicated that the expression of COX-2 is strongly associated with the development of OSCC. Moreover, the enhanced expression of PRDX1 and NF-κB may function in the progression of OSCC, which serves as a useful marker for prognosis in patients with oral cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Inappropriate antiplatelet therapy discontinuation increases the risk of thrombotic complications and bleeding after dental procedures. To determine the platelet reactivity recovery time after aspirin withdrawal in vivo, our study was conducted in patients with low-risk cardiovascular disease who can stop aspirin administration following the guidelines stipulated by the American College of Chest Physicians. The time it takes for platelet activity to normalize and the diagnostic accuracy of testing methods were assessed for a residual antiplatelet activity with multiple electrode aggregometry. Our study included patients with clinically indicated hypertension preparing for a dental extraction procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 212 patients not taking aspirin (control group) and 248 patients with hypertension receiving long-time aspirin treatment at a 100-mg daily dose were prospectively included in the study, which involved stopping aspirin intake before dental extraction. The residual platelet activity and dental bleeding in patients who stopped aspirin intake were analyzed and compared with those of the control group. In addition, platelet reactivity recovery time and bleeding risk in patients who stopped taking aspirin every 24 hours for 0 to 5 days (0-143 hours) before dental extraction was also assessed. RESULTS: Platelet reactivity normalized 96 hours after aspirin withdrawal. The cut-off value of 49 arbitrary units in the arachidonic acid platelet aggregation test excluded the effect of aspirin with 91% sensitivity and 66% specificity. AUC showed 0.86 (P < 0.001) diagnostic accuracy. The immediate bleeding complications in all treatment groups were similar to those seen in the control group and were successfully managed with local hemostatic measures. CONCLUSIONS: The antiplatelet effects of aspirin disappeared 96 hours after aspirin withdrawal in our study, and dental extractions may be safely performed in this period when appropriate local hemostatic measures are taken. Based on these results, a shorter aspirin intake cessation period may be allowable in complex dental procedures and surgery for which a longer aspirin intake cessation period (7-10 days) is recommended based on the American College of Chest Physicians guidelines.

The effect of phospholipids on the kinetic parameters of three substrates, 7-ethoxy-4 -(trifluoromethyl)coumarin (7-EFC), 7-ethoxycoumarin (7-EC) and 17ß-estradiol (E(2)), of human CYP1B1 was studied. In general, anionic phospholipids, phosphatidic acid and cardiolipin increased catalytic efficiency by increasing k(cat) values or decreasing K(m) values. The advantages of using the 7-EFC as a substrate over 7-EC and E(2) include high k(cat), low K(m) and high catalytic efficiency. Spectral binding titrations indicated that the binding affinity of 7-EFC to CYP1B1 in the presence or absence of phospholipids is higher than that of 7-EC or E(2). Furthermore, phosphatidylcholine increased the binding affinity of the substrates to the CYP1B1. High non-competitive intermolecular kinetic deuterium isotope effects (values 5.4-12) were observed for O-deethylation of 7-EFC and 7-EC with deuterium substitution at the ethoxy group, indicating that the C-H bond-breaking step makes a major contribution to the rate of these CYP1B1-catalyzed reactions. However, the intermolecular kinetic deuterium isotope effect is ~2 for the E(2) 4-hydroxylation reaction, indicating that the C-H bond-breaking step contributes only partially to the rate of this CYP1B1-catalyzed reaction. These results indicate that the reaction mechanism of CYP1B1-catalyzed reactions is distinct for each substrate.

Cytochrome P450 BM3 (CYP102A1) from Bacillus megaterium is a self-sufficient monooxygenase that consists of a heme domain and FAD/FMN-containing reductase domain (BMR). In this report, the reduction of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride (CTC) by BMR was evaluated as a method for monitoring BMR activity. The electron transfer proceeds from NADPH to BMR and then to BMR substrates, MTT and CTC. MTT and CTC are monotetrazolium salts that form formazans upon reduction. The reduction of MTT and CTC followed classical Michaelis-Menten kinetics (kcat =4120 min(-1), Km =77 µM for MTT and kcat =6580 min(-1), Km =51 µM for CTC). Our continuous assay using MTT and CTC allows the simple, rapid measurement of BMR activity. The BMR was able to metabolize mitomycin C and doxorubicin, which are anticancer drug substrates for CPR, producing the same metabolites as those produced by CPR. Moreover, the BMR was able to interact with CYP1A2 and transfer electrons to promote the oxidation reactions of substrates by CYP1A2 and CYP2E1 in humans. The results of this study suggest the possibility of the utilization of BMR as a surrogate for mammalian CPR.

BACKGROUND: High blood pressure, in relation to blood levels of adipokines such as adiponectin and leptin, is highly associated with an unhealthy lifestyle including sedentary behaviors, poor dietary habits such as excess sodium intake, and heavy drinking. Strategies to reduce blood pressure may benefit the levels of adipokines. OBJECTIVE: Thus, we aimed to investigate the effects of lifestyle intervention on blood pressure and serum adipokines in middle-aged Korean men with borderline high blood pressure (systolic blood pressure [SBP] ≥ 130 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure [DBP] ≥ 85 mm Hg). METHODS: Fifty-two men (aged 42.5 ± 8.5 years) with normal weight (body mass index [BMI] < 25 kg/m(2)) and high BP (NH group) and 40 men (age 42.0 ± 8.4 years) who were obese (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m(2)) with high BP (OH group) underwent 5 sessions of one-on-one intensive counseling including instruction on a nutritionally balanced diet, a low-sodium diet, how to understand calorie requirements, and strategies to implement regular exercise for blood pressure regulation over 12 weeks. In order to increase the awareness of sodium education, a salt sensory test using an unseasoned soup was performed. Anthropometrics, blood pressure measurements, 24-hour recalls were performed, and blood levels of lipids, fasting plasma glucose, C-reactive protein (CRP), leptin, and adiponectin were analyzed at week 0 and at week 12. Sodium consumption was roughly estimated using the Dish-based Frequency Questionnaire-15. RESULTS: Weight, BMI, body fat (kg and %), waist circumference, hip circumference, and blood pressure were significantly decreased after 12 weeks (p < 0.05) in all subjects. Similarly, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and CRP were decreased (p < 0.05), but LDL-C/HDL-C was significantly decreased (p < 0.01) only in the obese subjects. At baseline, blood levels of leptin were significantly higher in the obese subjects than in the normal weight subjects. In the obese subjects, a significantly negative correlation was found between leptin levels at baseline and percentage change in DBP (r = -0.338, p < 0.05). After 12 weeks, blood levels of adipokines did not show significant changes. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that a short-term (12 weeks) lifestyle intervention had positive effects on blood pressure control and weight reduction in the subjects, but not on their blood levels of adipokines. It is interesting that blood level of baseline leptin was negatively associated with the changes in blood pressure after this short-term intervention.

PURPOSE: Salivary gland scintigraphy (SGS) provides an objective means of diagnosing salivary gland dysfunction in Sjögren's syndrome (SS) patients and in thyroid cancer patients after radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy. In the present study, SGS was performed in SS patients and in thyroid cancer patients post-RAI, and scintigraphic parameters were compared. METHODS: Twenty-eight SS patients (males:females = 1:27, age 53.3 ± 11.9 years), 28 controls (males:females = 3:25, age 54.1 ± 10.1 years), and 92 thyroid cancer patients (males:females = 28:64, age 46.2 ± 12.9) who had undergone a session of high-dose RAI therapy (mean dose, 5.2 ± 1.5 GBq) were included. SGS was performed using Tc-99m pertechnetate (925 MBq). Scintigraphic parameters (parotid uptake ratio PU, submandibular uptake ratio SU, percentage parotid excretion %PE, and percentage submandibular excretion %SE) were measured and compared for SS, thyroid cancer post-RAI, and control patients. RESULTS: PU, SU, %SE, and %PE were all significantly lower in SS than in post-RAI thyroid cancer or control patients (p < 0.05), whereas only %PE was significantly lower in post-RAI thyroid cancer patients than in controls (p < 0.05). SU and %SE were found to be correlated with the unstimulated whole salivary flow rate. CONCLUSION: Scintigraphic parameters derived from SGS can play a crucial role in the detection of salivary gland dysfunction in SS patients and in post-RAI thyroid cancer patients.

AIMS: This study was conducted to compare the effects of two years of lifestyle intervention to no intervention or one year of intervention on diabetes risk factors in male workers with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or diabetes. METHODS: We conducted a randomized lifestyle intervention trial designed to alter personal lifestyles among 123 industrial male workers (CG; control group, n=75; OIG; one-year intervention group, n=23; TIG; two-year intervention group, n=25). The intervention consisted of two parts, the main program (face-to-face counseling five times/12 weeks) and a follow-up program (e-mail counseling ten times/30 weeks). Assessments included biochemical characteristics, anthropometry and nutrient intake at baseline and after two years. RESULTS: After two years, systolic blood pressure, HOMA-IR, HDL cholesterol and total energy intake (p<0.05) were reduced in the OIG group, while weight, body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), HbA1c and nutrient intake (total energy, carbohydrate, protein and sodium) were significantly decreased (p<0.05, respectively) in the TIG group. When compared to the CG, subjects in OIG and TIG showed significant improvements in the level of FPG and HbA1c (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Continuous lifestyle intervention for two years is more effective at improving diabetes risk factors than OIG.

PURPOSE: (18)F-fluoride bone positron emission tomography (PET) has been reported as a useful bone imaging modality. However, no clinical bone PET study had been performed previously in Korea. The authors investigated the usefulness of (18)F-fluoride bone PET in Korean patients with malignant or benign bone disease. METHODS: Eighteen consecutive patients (eight women, ten men; mean age, 55 ± 12 years) who had undergone (18)F-fluoride bone PET for the evaluation of bone metastasis (n = 13) or benign bone lesions (n = 5) were included. The interpretation of bone lesions on (18)F-fluoride bone PET was determined by consensus of two nuclear medicine physicians, and final results were confirmed using combination of all imaging studies and/or clinical follow-up. The analysis was performed on the basis of lesion group. RESULTS: Thirteen patients with malignant disease had 15 lesion groups, among which seven were confirmed as metastatic bone lesions and eight were confirmed as non-metastatic lesions. (18)F-fluoride bone PET correctly identified six of seven metastatic lesions (sensitivity, 86%), and seven of eight non-metastatic lesions (specificity, 88%). On the other hand, five patients with benign conditions had five bone lesion groups; four were confirmed as benign bone diseases and the other one was confirmed as not a bone lesion. (18)F-fluoride bone PET showed correct results in all the five lesion groups. CONCLUSIONS: (18)F-fluoride bone PET showed promising potential for bone imaging in Korean patients with malignant diseases as well as with various benign bone conditions. Therefore, further studies are required on the diagnostic performance and cost-effectiveness of (18)F-fluoride bone PET.
