RESUMO

Strangulated femoral hernia is a common surgical emergency. The contents of the hernial sac commonly include omentum and small bowel, but, occasionally, strangulation of other organs such as Meckel's diverticulum, stomach, ovary, or appendix may occur, resulting in unusual clinical presentations. We report of a case with strangulated femoral hernia containing the uterus and both ovaries, and this is the first report of such a case. We believe that it is important to take into consideration herniation of the uterus and ovaries with omentum or small bowel into the femoral canal to prevent various complications related to the reproductive functions of the patient.

RESUMO

A 37-year-old man with a past history of a fall from height 16 years previously was admitted with acute abdomen. Investigations revealed intestinal obstruction caused by a diaphragmatic hernia. He had an incarcerated omentum and Richter's hernia of the transverse colon secondary to left diaphragmatic hernia leading to colonic ileus. Following resection of the strangulated omentum and reduction of the colon intraabdominally, a surgical repair of the hernia was performed using an abdominal and transthoracic approach. The relatively rare late complication of a left-sided enterothorax with ileus makes this a remarkable case and underlines the need for early surgery to avoid late complications.

RESUMO

Wegener's granulomatosis is a necrotizing vasculitis of unknown etiology characterized mainly by inflammation of the small- and medium-sized arteries and veins that affect any viscera. It may rarely involve the gastrointestinal tract. Only a few cases of multiple focus ileal perforation due to ulcers associated with Wegener's granulomatosis have been reported. Herein we report a case of a 32-year-old man with extensive intestinal small bowel ischaemic perforation due to Wegener's granulomatosis.

RESUMO

In this study, we investigated the effects of acute exercise on tissue levels of iron, magnesium, and uric acid of rats. Twenty adult Wistar albino rats were used for the study. They were divided into two groups: controls (n=10) and the study group (n=10). The study group was left into a small water pool and allowed to do swimming exercise for 30 min while controls rested. All of the animals were sacrificed, and their livers and spleens removed and homogenized immediately. The iron, magnesium, and uric acid levels of the homogenates were measured by an autoanalyzer (ILAB 900, Italy) with commercial kits from the same company. Results were evaluated by the Mann-Whitney U-test. According to our results, the liver iron levels increased significantly with exercise, whereas spleen iron levels decreased significantly (p<0.05) compared to controls. We found no significant differences in the levels of the other two parameters with exercise. These results show that the iron distribution in organs changes with exercise.

RESUMO

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the differences in blood lipid fractions which are important risk factors for atherosclerosis and to show how the levels of serum albumin, uric acid, ionized calcium, inorganic phosphorus change with exercises between sportsmen and sedanters. 25 sportsmen and 25 sedanters (13 male, 12 female in each group) aged 18-23 were chosen for the study. From the venous blood samples taken from the two groups, levels of serum total lipid, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, albumin, uric acid, ionized calcium, inorganic phosphorus were analyzed. Student’s t-test was used for the statistical analyses. There were some important changes in the levels of serum triglyceride, VLDL-cholesterol and ionized calcium of sportsmen compared to those of controls.

RESUMO

Effects of calcium channel blocker flunarizine on spinal monosynaptic reflexes were investigated in spinal cats. Flunarizine was administered locally into the spinal cord (10, 50, 100 microM) and intraperitoneally (5, 10, 20 mg/kg). Adult cats (n = 10), weighing 1.5-3 kg were anesthetized with ketamine (50 mg/kg, i.m.) and artificially ventilated. Animals were spinalized at C1 level. A laminectomy was performed in the lumbosacral region. The ventral and dorsal roots of segment L5 were isolated and a pouch of skin was formed at the site of the dissection to allow the exposed tissues to be covered with liquid paraffin. The temperature was kept at 38.5 degrees C with a heating pad. A polyethylene cannula was introduced into the left carotid artery to monitor blood pressure, which was kept above 100 mmHg. The dorsal root of segment L5 was placed on a silver-silver chloride wire electrode for stimulation through an isolation unit. The reflex potentials were recorded from the ipsilateral L5 ventral root, mounted on a silver-silver chloride wire electrode. The systemic (5, 10, 20 mg/kg) and local (50 and 100 microM) dosages of cinnarizin derivative flunarizine significantly decreased the amplitude of reflex response (p < 0.05). Moreover, the latency of the monosynaptic reflexes was increased after administration of the drug (p < 0.05). Voltage-dependent calcium channels in the spinal cord may play an important role to regulate reflex respond.
