Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder triggered by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Recent studies have demonstrated that necroptosis is involved in dopaminergic neuronal cell death and the resulting neuroinflammation. During the process of necroptosis, a necrosome complex is formed consisting of the proteins receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1), RIPK3, and mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein (MLKL). Although the neuroprotective effects of the RIPK1-specific inhibitor necrostatin-1, as well as RIPK3 and MLKL knockout in mice, have been described, the effects of RIPK3 pharmacological inhibitors have not yet been reported in animal models of PD. In the present study, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of GSK872, a specific RIPK3 inhibitor, in a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced mouse model of PD. GSK872 rescued MPTP-induced motor impairment and inhibited tyrosine hydroxylase-positive dopaminergic cell death in the SN and striatum. Additionally, GSK872 inhibited the MPTP-induced increase in the expression of p-RIPK3 and p-MLKL in both the dopaminergic neurons and microglia, as assessed by biochemical and histological analyses. GSK872 further inhibited microglial activation and the expression of inflammatory mediators including NLRP3, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and inducible nitric oxide synthase in the SN region of MPTP mice. Using in vitro experiments, we validated the effects of GSK872 on necroptosis in SH-SY5Y neuronal and BV2 microglial cells. Overall, our results suggest that GSK872 exerts neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, and may thus have therapeutic potential for PD.

Objective: The study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes of fetuses diagnosed with isolated mega cisterna magna in utero. Methods: A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted across 18 university hospitals from 2010 to 2019. Cases diagnosed with isolated mega cisterna magna, defined as a cisterna magna >10 mm with a normal cerebellar vermis and no cystic dilation of the fourth ventricle, were included. Cases with other central nervous system (CNS) anomalies, extra-central nervous system anomalies, chromosomal abnormalities, or congenital infections were excluded. Maternal demographics, prenatal findings, delivery outcomes, and postnatal outcomes were analyzed. Results: The mean gestational age at initial diagnosis was 28.6 ± 3.9 weeks, and the mean anteroposterior diameter of the cisterna magna was 12.5 ± 3.2 mm. Of the 71 cases initially assessed, 48 (67.6%) showed self-regression in utero. Postnatally, 13 cases (18.3%) had persistent isolated mega cisterna magna, whereas 10 cases (14.1%) were diagnosed with other central nervous system anomalies. Among the persistent isolated mega cisterna magna cases, one child exhibited delayed neurodevelopment. There was a higher incidence of isolated mega cisterna magna in male fetuses, which exhibited a significantly larger mean cisterna magna diameter compared with female fetuses (P = .045). Conclusion: Male fetuses exhibited a higher incidence of isolated mega cisterna magna compared with female fetuses and had larger anteroposterior diameters of the cisterna magna. The study demonstrated favorable neurodevelopmental outcomes associated with isolated mega cisterna magna, with self-regression observed in two-thirds of the cases. However, consecutive prenatal and postnatal evaluations for additional central nervous system or extra-central nervous system malformations need to be performed, considering the differences between prenatal and postnatal diagnoses.

Background/purpose: In clinical settings, there may be a need for a guide device that is simple and enhances the positioning accuracy of prosthetics. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of implant positioning using two methods: implant placement with a simple guide device (SGD) and freehand surgery. Materials and methods: A total of 103 patients were randomly assigned to the control or study group. In the control group, implant placement was performed using the freehand technique. In the study group, implant placement was conducted with an SGD. Implant positioning accuracy was assessed by measuring how much the central position, fixture angulation, and fixture position differed from the ideal implant position based on periapical radiographs and cone-beam computed tomography images. In patients with double implants, parallelism between the two fixtures was also measured. Results: There were 124 subjects, with 84 having single implants (42 in the control group and 42 in the study group) and 40 having double implants (20 in the control group and 20 in the study group). Utilization of the SGD for both single and double implant placement improved the accuracy of the central position, fixture angulation, and fixture position (P < 0.05). Additionally, in double implantation cases, it significantly enhanced parallelism between the two fixtures (P < 0.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that use of an SGD leads to more accurate implant placement compared with freehand surgery taking into account the final prosthetic restoration.

Microglia are primarily involved in inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress in the brain; as such reducing microglial activation has been proposed as a potential therapeutic strategy for neurodegenerative disorders. Herein, we investigated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of coniferaldehyde (CFA), a naturally occurring cinnamaldehyde derivative, on activated microglia to evaluate its therapeutic potential. CFA inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO) and proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, and IL-6, in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV2 microglial cells. CFA also inhibited intracellular reactive oxygen species levels and oxidative stress markers such as 4-HNE and 8-OHdG. Detailed mechanistic studies showed that CFA exerted anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting TAK1-mediated MAP kinase/NF-κB activation and upregulating AMPK signaling pathways. In addition, CFA exerted antioxidant effects by inhibiting the NADPH oxidase subunits and by increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes such as HO-1, NQO1, and catalase by upregulating Nrf2 signaling. Finally, we confirmed the effects of CFA on the brains of the LPS-injected mice. CFA inhibited microglial activation and the expression of proinflammatory markers and increased Nrf2-driven antioxidant enzymes. Furthermore, CFA inhibited the production of 4-HNE and 8-OHdG in the brains of LPS-injected mice. As a result, CFA's significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may have therapeutic applications in neuroinflammatory disorders related with oxidative stress and microglial activation.

VISUMAX 800 was introduced to improve the patient experience and clinical outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). This was a retrospective, matched, and case-control study (1:2) controlled for preoperative central corneal thickness and refractive error that compared early refractive and visual outcomes after SMILE using VISUMAX 800 and VISUMAX 500 to treat myopia. We included 50 eyes that underwent the VISUMAX 800 SMILE and 100 eyes that underwent the VISUMAX 500 SMILE. SMILE using VISUMAX 800 was performed using the CentraLign aid for vertex centration. Cyclotorsion was controlled by an OcuLign assistant in the VISUMAX 800 group after corneal marking. Corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were evaluated using a Pentacam 1 month after surgery. No differences were observed in the pre- and post-operative refractive and visual outcomes at 1 day, 1 month, and 6 months after surgery. VISUMAX 800 induced less total HOAs than VISUMAX 500 (P = 0.036). No statistically significant differences were observed in the amounts of induced spherical aberrations or vertical and horizontal comas. No differences were observed in the 1 month and 6 months refractive and visual outcomes between two SMILE procedures, except for VISUMAX 800, which resulted in lower postoperative total HOAs than VISUMAX 500.

PURPOSE: Dental implants have been successfully implemented as a treatment for tooth loss. However, peri-implantitis, an inflammatory reaction owing to microbial deposition around the implant, can lead to implant failure. So, it is necessary to treat peri-implantitis. Therefore, this numerical study is aimed at investigating conditions for treating peri-implantitis. METHODS: Photothermal therapy, a laser treatment method, utilizes photothermal effect, in which light is converted to heat. This technique has advantage of selectively curing inflamed tissues by increasing their temperature. Accordingly, herein, photothermal effect on peri-implantitis is studied through numerical analysis with using Arrhenius damage integral and Arrhenius thermal damage ratio. RESULTS: Through numerical analysis on peri-implantitis treatment, we explored temperature changes under varied laser settings (laser power, radius, irradiation time). We obtained the temperature distribution on interface of artificial tooth root and inflammation and determined whether temperature exceeds or does not exceed 47â to know which laser power affects alveolar bone indirectly. We defined the Arrhenius thermal damage ratio as a variable and determined that the maximum laser power that does not exceed 47â at the AA' line is 1.0 W. Additionally, we found that the value of the Arrhenius thermal damage ratio is 0.26 for a laser irradiation time of 100 s and 0.50 for 500 s. CONCLUSION: The result of this numerical study indicates that the Arrhenius thermal damage ratio can be used as a standard for determining the treatment conditions to help assisted laser treatment for peri-implantitis in each numerical analysis scenario.

The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and fibroblast activation are major events in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis pathogenesis. Here, we investigated whether growth arrest-specific protein 6 (Gas6) plays a protective role in lung fibrosis via suppression of the EMT and fibroblast activation. rGas6 administration inhibited the EMT in isolated mouse ATII cells 14 days post-BLM treatment based on morphologic cellular alterations, changes in mRNA and protein expression profiles of EMT markers, and induction of EMT-activating transcription factors. BLM-induced increases in gene expression of fibroblast activation-related markers and the invasive capacity of primary lung fibroblasts in primary lung fibroblasts were reversed by rGas6 administration. Furthermore, the hydroxyproline content and collagen accumulation in interstitial areas with damaged alveolar structures in lung tissue were reduced by rGas6 administration. Targeting Gas6/Axl signaling events with specific inhibitors of Axl (BGB324), COX-2 (NS-398), EP1/EP2 receptor (AH-6809), or PGD2 DP2 receptor (BAY-u3405) reversed the inhibitory effects of rGas6 on EMT and fibroblast activation. Finally, we confirmed the antifibrotic effects of Gas6 using Gas6-/- mice. Therefore, Gas6/Axl signaling events play a potential role in inhibition of EMT process and fibroblast activation via COX-2-derived PGE2 and PGD2 production, ultimately preventing the development of pulmonary fibrosis.

The implantation of good-quality embryos to the receptive endometrium is essential for successful live birth through in vitro fertilization (IVF). The higher the quality of embryos, the higher the live birth rate per cycle, and so efforts have been made to obtain as many high-quality embryos as possible after fertilization. In addition to an effective controlled ovarian stimulation process to obtain high-quality embryos, the composition of the embryo culture medium in direct contact with embryos in vitro is also important. During embryonic development, under the control of female sex hormones, the fallopian tubes and endometrium create a microenvironment that supplies the nutrients and substances necessary for embryos at each stage. During this process, the development of the embryo is finely regulated by signaling molecules, such as growth factors and cytokines secreted from the epithelial cells of the fallopian tube and uterine endometrium. The development of embryo culture media has continued since the first successful human birth through IVF in 1978. However, there are still limitations to mimicking a microenvironment similar to the reproductive organs of women suitable for embryo development in vitro. Efforts have been made to overcome the harsh in vitro culture environment and obtain high-quality embryos by adding various supplements, such as antioxidants and growth factors, to the embryo culture medium. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of studies on the effect of supplementation in different clinical situations such as old age, recurrent implantation failure (RIF), and unexplained infertility; in addition, anticipation of the potential benefits from individuation is rising. This article reviews the effects of representative supplements in culture media on embryo development.

This study aimed to develop a Mobile Application to Prevent Recurrent Stroke to prevent recurrent stroke by enhancing self-management and to evaluate its effects on stroke survivors' health outcomes. The Mobile Application to Prevent Recurrent Stroke was developed based on social cognitive theory and the model in order of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation process. The Mobile Application to Prevent Recurrent Stroke consisted of health management contents such as information about stroke, its associated risk factors, and required skills to conduct self-management with tailored support and counseling. A quasi-experimental preintervention and postintervention design was used involving a total of 54 stroke survivors. The experimental group (n = 27) was provided the Mobile Application to Prevent Recurrent Stroke for 8 weeks, whereas the control group (n = 27) received an education booklet. The result revealed that medication adherence ( P = .002), healthy eating habit ( P < .001), physical activity ( P < .001), and affected-side grip strength ( P = .002) in the experimental group were significantly better than those in the control group. The systolic blood pressure ( P = .020), diastolic blood pressure ( P < .001), body mass index ( P < .001), and waist circumference ( P < .001) in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the control group. Stroke survivors can easily use this Mobile Application to Prevent Recurrent Stroke to improve self-management. Nurses can provide tailored care based on the lifelogging data of stroke survivors to prevent recurrent stroke.

Background: This study evaluated the risk factors of long-term mortality in patients with multidrug/rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/RR-TB) in South Korea who were lost to follow-up (LTFU). Methods: This was a retrospective longitudinal follow-up study using an integrated database constructed by data linkage of the three national databases, which included 7226 cases of MDR/RR-TB notified between 2011 and 2017 in South Korea. Post-treatment outcomes of patients who were LTFU were compared with those of patients who achieved treatment success. Results: Of the 7226 MDR/RR-TB cases, 730 (10.1%) were LTFU. During a median follow-up period of 4.2â years, 101 (13.8%) of the LTFU patients died: 25 deaths (3.4%) were TB related and 76 (10.4%) were non-TB related. In the LTFU group, the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of all-cause mortality (aHR 2.50, 95% CI 1.99-3.15, p<0.001), TB-related mortality (aHR 5.38, 95% CI 3.19-9.09, p<0.001) and non-TB-related mortality (HR 2.21, 95% CI 1.70-2.87, p<0.001) was significantly higher than that in the treatment success group. Independent risk factors for all-cause mortality in the LTFU group were age >55â years, fluoroquinolone resistance, cancer and no retreatment. In the LTFU patients who did not receive retreatment, the risk of non-TB-related mortality (aHR 5.00, 95% CI 1.53-16.37, p=0.008) and consequent all-cause mortality (aHR 2.18, 95% CI 1.08-4.40, p=0.030) was significantly higher than that of patients who received retreatment. Conclusion: Non-TB-related mortality was the main cause of death and might be reduced by retreatment in LTFU patients with MDR/RR-TB.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the factors explaining protective behaviors against radiation exposure in perioperative nurses based on the theory of planned behavior. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 229 perioperative nurses participated between October 3 and October 20, 2021. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 23.0 and AMOS 23.0 software. The three exogenous variables (attitude toward radiation protective behaviors, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) and two endogenous variables (radiation protective intention and radiation protective behaviors) were surveyed. RESULTS: The hypothetical model fit the data (χ²/df = 1.18, SRMR = .02, TLI = .98, CFI = .99, RMSEA = .03). Radiation protective intention (ß = .24, p = .001) and attitude toward radiation protective behaviors (ß = .32, p = .002) had direct effects on radiation protective behaviors. Subjective norm (ß = .43, p = .002) and perceived behavior control (ß = .24, p = .003) had direct effects on radiation protective intention, which explained 38.0% of the variance. Subjective norm (ß = .10, p = .001) and perceived behavior control (ß = .06, p = .002) had indirect effects via radiation protective intention on radiation protective behaviors. Attitude toward radiation protective behaviors, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control were the significant factors explaining 49.0% of the variance in radiation protective behaviors. CONCLUSION: This study shows that the theory of planned behavior can be used to effectively predict radiation protective behaviors in perioperative nurses. Radiation safety guidelines or education programs to enhance perioperative nurses' protective behaviors should focus on radiation protective intention, attitude toward radiation protective behaviors, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is an incurable movement disorder characterized by dopaminergic cell loss, neuroinflammation, and α-synuclein pathology. Herein, we investigated the therapeutic effects of necrosulfonamide (NSA), a specific inhibitor of mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein (MLKL), in a subacute 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) mouse model of PD. MLKL is an executor of necroptosis, a programmed cell death pathway that causes inflammation. Repeated administration of NSA resulted in the recovery of impaired motor performance and dopaminergic degeneration. Furthermore, NSA inhibited the phosphorylation, ubiquitylation, and oligomerization of MLKL, all of which are associated with MLKL cell death-inducing activity in dopaminergic cells in the substantia nigra (SN). NSA also inhibited microglial activation and reactive astrogliosis as well as the MPTP-induced expression of proinflammatory molecules such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1ß, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and cystatin F. Furthermore, NSA inhibited α-synuclein oligomerization and phosphorylation in the SN of MPTP-treated mice by inhibiting the activity of glycogen synthase kinase 3ß and matrix metalloproteinase-3. In conclusion, NSA has anti-necroptotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-synucleinopathic effects on PD pathology. Therefore, NSA is a potential therapeutic candidate for PD.

A significant fraction of couples around the world suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a disease defined by the characteristics of enhanced androgen synthesis in ovarian theca cells, hyperandrogenemia, and ovarian dysfunction in women. Most of the clinically observable symptoms and altered blood biomarker levels in the patients indicate metabolic dysregulation and adaptive changes as the key underlying mechanisms. Since the liver is the metabolic hub of the body and is involved in steroid-hormonal detoxification, pathological changes in the liver may contribute to female endocrine disruption, potentially through the liver-to-ovary axis. Of particular interest are hyperglycemic challenges and the consequent changes in liver-secretory protein(s) and insulin sensitivity affecting the maturation of ovarian follicles, potentially leading to female infertility. The purpose of this review is to provide insight into emerging metabolic mechanisms underlying PCOS as the primary culprit, which promote its incidence and aggravation. Additionally, this review aims to summarize medications and new potential therapeutic approaches for the disease.

Background: This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of a community-based primary care program focused on hypertension and diabetes in Korea. Methods: We selected patients and doctors who participated in the community-based primary care program as study subjects from Aug 2015 to Jan 2016. Patients and physicians completed a survey, and medical records were reviewed to obtain information regarding clinical variables. Change in the baseline recognition of diseases, motivation for changing health behavior, medical services utilization, doctor-patient relationship were assessed after participation in the program. Results: Both patients and physicians indicated there was improvement in recognition of disease, motivation for changing health behavior, medical services utilization, and doctor-patient relationship (All of recognition scores were above the median point). Patient health behavior such as exercise, smoking, drinking and diet and clinical variables (blood pressure and blood glucose and cholesterol level) also showed significant improvement. Conclusion: The community-based primary care program was found to be helpful in improving hypertension and diabetes patients' overall outcomes and their healthcare providers' behavior.

Background: Recently, the South Korean government has adopted a primary-care-based chronic disease management program as a national task. This study aimed to evaluate this program by focusing on hypertension patients and examine the effect of this program on their health. Methods: Overall, 863 subjects who responded to a survey and 1,716 subjects in administrative data were included. Effects of the program were evaluated based on intermediate outcomes (motivation for self-management, changes in health behavior, medical service utilization, duration of consultation with physicians, and medication compliance) and outcomes (disease management, service satisfaction, and physician-patient relationship, change of blood pressure). Furthermore, we compared study participants' baseline systolic and diastolic blood pressure with corresponding measurements obtained at examinations conducted at 3 and 6 months after baseline measurements. Results: Patients' motivation for self-management of hypertension, health behaviors (smoking, drinking, and exercise), regular clinic visit, and medication compliance were improved after participating in the program. Furthermore, patients' blood pressure levels were decreased while their satisfaction with physician-patient relationships was increased. Conclusion: Primary-care-based chronic disease management program is effective for managing hypertension. Therefore, it is essential to reinforce the role of community-based primary care to improve the health of patients with hypertension.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease, and its incidence is predicted to increase worldwide. Striatal dopamine depletion caused by substantia nigra (SN) degeneration is a pathological hallmark of PD and is strongly associated with cardinal motor and non-motor symptoms. Previous studies have reported that exercise increases neuroplasticity and promotes neurorestoration by increasing neurotrophic factors and synaptic strength and stimulating neurogenesis in PD. In the present study, we found that rotarod walking exercise, a modality of motor skill learning training, improved locomotor disturbances and reduced nigrostriatal degeneration in the subacute 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) mouse model of PD. In addition, our exercise regimen improved MPTP-induced perturbation of adult neurogenesis in some areas of the brain, including the subventricular zone, subgranular zone, SN, and striatum. Moreover, rotarod walking activated the phosphorylation of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and induced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in these regions. The results suggest that motor skill learning training using rotarod walking improves adult neurogenesis and restores motor performance by modulating the AMPK/BDNF pathway. Therefore, our findings provide evidence for neuroprotective effects and improved neuroplasticity in PD through motor skill learning training.

We aimed to review the current data composition of the Korean Tuberculosis and Post-Tuberculosis Cohort, which was constructed by linking the Korean Tuberculosis Surveillance System (KNTSS; established and operated by the Korean Disease Control and Prevention Agency since 2000) and the National Health Information Database (NHID; established by the National Health Insurance Service in 2012). The following data were linked: KNTSS data pertaining to patients diagnosed with tuberculosis between 2011 and 2018, NHID data of patients with a history of tuberculosis and related diseases between 2006 and 2018, and data (obtained from the Statistics Korea database) on causes of death. Data from 300 117 tuberculosis patients (177 206 men and 122 911 women) were linked. The rate of treatment success for new cases was highest in 2015 (86.7%), with a gradual decrease thereafter. The treatment success rate for previously treated cases showed an increasing trend until 2014 (79.0%) and decreased thereafter. In total, 53 906 deaths were confirmed among tuberculosis patients included in the cohort. The Korean Tuberculosis and Post-Tuberculosis Cohort can be used to analyze different measurement variables in an integrated manner depending on the data source. Therefore, these cohort data can be used in future epidemiological studies and research on policy-effect analysis, treatment outcome analysis, and health-related behaviors such as treatment discontinuation.

Purpose: Saeu-jeot, or shrimp paste, is a traditional Korean high-salt fermented seafood. This study elucidated the effects of saeu-jeot extract (SJE) on NLRP3 inflammasome activation and radiation-induced micronucleus formation. Method: We treated lipopolysaccharide-primed mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages with the NLRP3 inflammasome activators ATP and nigericin. We also analyzed the acute effects of ionizing radiation on micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MnPCEs) in whole-body gamma-irradiated male BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice after oral administration of SJE. Results: SJE significantly inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation, reducing IL-1ß secretion in vitro. In addition, the frequency of MnPCEs was significantly lower in SJE-treated mice. Conclusions: SJE has anti-inflammatory effects and reduces radiation-induced chromosome damage. Advance in knowledge: There are no reports concerning the effects of SJE on NLRP3 inflammasome activation or radioprotection. This experiment showed the radioprotective effects of saeu-jeot.

PURPOSE: To investigate potential differences in the frequency of preterm births (PTB) between pregnancies with or without prophylactic cerclage in women with a history of conization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified women who had their first singleton delivery after conization between 2013 and 2018 using records in the National Health Insurance Service of Korea claims database. We only included women who had undergone a health examination and interview within 2 years before delivery. We used timing of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) tests to differentiate early (before) from late (after the MSAFP test) cerclage. The frequency of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including PTB, preterm labor and premature rupture of membranes, antibiotics and tocolytics use, cesarean delivery, and number of admissions before delivery, were compared. RESULTS: A total of 8322 women was included. Compared to the no cerclage group (n=7147), the risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes were higher in the cerclage group (n=1175). After categorizing patients with cerclage into two groups, the risk of PTB was still higher in the early cerclage group than in the no cerclage group after adjusting for baseline factors (4.48%, 30/669 vs. 2.77%, 159/5749, odds ratio 2.42, 95% confidence interval 1.49, 3.92). Other adverse pregnancy outcomes were also more frequent in the early cerclage group than the no cerclage group. CONCLUSION: Early cerclage performed before MSAFP testing does not prevent PTB in pregnancy with a history of conization, but increases the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including PTB.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated whether coping strategies (positive reframing, planning, and active coping) and depression mediate the relationship between sense of coherence (SOC) and quality of life (QoL) using a serial multiple mediator model in patients with gynecologic cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: A sample of 148 participants, with a mean age of 52.17 years (range 20-75) and diagnosed with gynecological cancer (e.g., cervix, ovary and endometrium) was surveyed in a cross-sectional study. Data were collected using a structured self-reporting questionnaire. A serial multiple mediator model was analyzed to explain sequential causality among two mediators (coping strategy and depression) and to investigate the direct and indirect effects of the mediator model in SPSSWIN 26.0 and PROCESS macro program. RESULTS: The conceptual serial mediation model of SOC, positive reframing, depression, and QoL revealed a significant positive total effect (coefficient c = 13.099, SE = 1.647, p < 0.001). The path through single mediation of positive reframing (Effect = 0.925) and depression (Effect = 5.942) and that through both mediators (Effect = 1.161) were statistically significant. The total indirect effect was also statistically significant (Effect = 8.028). Moreover, the conceptual serial mediation model on SOC, planning, depression, and QoL revealed a significant positive total effect (coefficient c = 13.099, SE = 1.647, p < 0.001). The path through both mediation of planning and depression (Effect = 1.162) and the total indirect effect were statistically significant (Effect = 8.172). CONCLUSIONS: Helping patients with gynecologic cancer undergoing chemotherapy to strengthen SOC may improve QoL by equipping them with efficient positive reframing or planning strategies to reduce depression.
