RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate and compare the magnitude of intraocular lens (IOL) decentration and tilt following conventional and femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) using swept-source anterior optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we enrolled patients who underwent conventional cataract surgery or FLACS with the implantation of hydrophobic 1-piece monofocal IOL. The magnitude of IOL decentration and tilt were measured using SS-OCT. Visual acuity, intraocular pressure, spherical equivalent, axial length, contrast sensitivity, and satisfaction questionnaire were evaluated before and one-month post-surgery. Additionally, postoperative internal cylinder measurements were obtained using a wavefront aberrometer. Correlation factors between each parameter and IOL decentration or tilt were analyzed. Results: This study included 100 eyes from 100 patients. Mean IOL decentration and tilt were 0.21 ± 0.13 mm and 5.01 ± 1.49°, respectively. Conventional cataract surgery (versus FLACS, P = 0.001) and male sex (versus female, P = 0.047) were significantly correlated with higher postoperative decentration. Preoperative lens diameter (P < 0.001), preoperative lens tilt (P = 0.007), and preoperative intraocular pressure (P = 0.027) were correlated with higher postoperative tilt. Fifty eyes that underwent FLACS demonstrated mean postoperative decentration of 0.21 ± 0.13 mm and tilt of 4.64 ± 1.48°. Compared with the conventional surgery group, the FLACS group significantly differed in postoperative decentration (0.30 ± 0.12 mm, P < 0.001) but not in tilt (5.03 ± 1.35°, P = 0.173). Postoperative visual acuity did not significantly differ between the two groups. Conclusion: Patients who underwent FLACS demonstrated better IOL decentration and tilt than those who underwent conventional cataract surgery one-month post-surgery. However, differences in IOL decentration and tilt did not affect postoperative visual acuity.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) before and after femtosecond laser capsulorhexis and lens fragmentation for cataract surgery. We measured the IOP before, immediately, 30 min, and 1 h after the laser procedure in 47 eyes of 47 patients who underwent the femtosecond laser procedure. The mean IOP was 17.51 ± 3.28 mmHg, 30.23 ± 6.70 mmHg, 17.96 ± 3.75 mmHg, and 21.77 ± 5.88 mmHg before, immediately after, 30 min after, and 1 h after the laser procedure, respectively. The mean IOP significantly increased immediately (adjusted P < 0.001) and 1 h (adjusted P = 0.001) after the laser procedure compared with the pre-laser IOP. The mean IOP at 30 min after the laser procedure was significantly lower than that immediately after the procedure (adjusted P < 0.001). However, the IOP 1 h after the laser procedure became higher than that 30 min after the laser procedure. Additionally, the IOP 1 h after the laser procedure was positively correlated with the baseline IOP and negatively correlated with the axial length. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that cataract surgery should be commenced within 30 min after the femtosecond laser procedure to ensure a safe cataract surgery that reduces the risk of increased intraocular pressure.

RESUMO

Lycii Radicis Cortex (LRC) is a traditional medicine in East Asia with various beneficial effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-diabetic, and anti-depressant properties. However, its potential effects on skeletal muscle atrophy have not been studied. In this study, the protective effects of LRC extract (LRCE) on dexamethasone (DEX)-induced muscle atrophy were investigated in C2C12 myotubes and mice. We evaluated the effect of LRCE on improving muscle atrophy using a variety of methods, including immunofluorescence staining, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), Western blot, measurements of oxidative stress, apoptosis, ATP levels, and muscle tissue analysis. The results showed that LRCE improved myotube diameter, fusion index, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, mitochondrial content, ATP levels, expression of myogenin and myosin heavy chain (MHC), and reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in dexamethasone-induced C2C12 myotubes. LRCE also enhanced protein synthesis and reduced protein degradation in the myotubes. In mice treated with DEX, LRCE restored calf thickness, decreased mRNA levels of muscle-specific RING finger protein 1 (MuRF1) and atrogin-1, and increased insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) mRNA level. Moreover, LRCE also repaired gastrocnemius muscle atrophy caused by DEX. Although human studies are not available, various preclinical studies have identified potential protective effects of LRCE against muscle atrophy, suggesting that it could be utilized in the prevention and treatment of muscle atrophy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We aimed to compare the accuracy of the intraocular lens (IOL) calculation formula using the standard keratometry (K) and total K (TK) during the femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) with a monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function using currently used formulas. METHODS: A retrospective review of 125 eyes from 125 patients who had undergone FLACS with implantation of monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function was conducted. The predicted refractive power was calculated using an optical biometer (IOLmaster 700) according to the K and TK in the Barrett Universal II, SRK/T, Haigis, and Holladay 2 formulas. Absolute prediction error (APE) obtained from the actual postoperative refractive outcomes and the refractive error predicted in each formula was compared one month after surgery. RESULTS: Mean APE ranged between 0.29 and 0.39 diopters (D) regardless of the calculation formula and the method of measuring corneal curvature. Significant differences were observed in the APE from the four formulas and the two keratometric measurements (p = 0.014). In a total of 125 eyes from 125 patients, the mean APE was lowest with the Barrett Universal II formula. Across all formulas, both the mean APE and the median APE tended to be lower for K than for TK, although there was no significant difference. Approximately 70% to 80% of the patients were included within 0.5 D of the refractive error across all formulas. The percentage of eyes within 0.5 D of APE outcomes was not statistically different between the K and TK data when using each formula. CONCLUSIONS: Keratometric measurements considering the poster corneal curvature did not show any additional advantages when implanting the monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function during the FLACS.

RESUMO

The E6 and E7 proteins of specific subtypes of human papillomavirus (HPV), including HPV 16 and 18, are highly associated with cervical cancer as they modulate cell cycle regulation. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential antitumor effects of a messenger RNA-HPV therapeutic vaccine (mHTV) containing nononcogenic E6 and E7 proteins. To achieve this, C57BL/6j mice were injected with the vaccine via both intramuscular and subcutaneous routes, and the resulting effects were evaluated. mHTV immunization markedly induced robust T cell-mediated immune responses and significantly suppressed tumor growth in both subcutaneous and orthotopic tumor-implanted mouse model, with a significant infiltration of immune cells into tumor tissues. Tumor retransplantation at day 62 postprimary vaccination completely halted progression in all mHTV-treated mice. Furthermore, tumor expansion was significantly reduced upon TC-1 transplantation 160 days after the last immunization. Immunization of rhesus monkeys with mHTV elicited promising immune responses. The immunogenicity of mHTV in nonhuman primates provides strong evidence for clinical application against HPV-related cancers in humans. All data suggest that mHTV can be used as both a therapeutic and prophylactic vaccine.

RESUMO

Undaria pinnatifida, a marine biological resource from which antioxidants such as polysaccharides can be obtained, is primarily distributed in the coastal areas of East Asia. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are essential for physiological processes; however, excess ROS levels in the body result in cellular oxidative damage. Several extraction methods exist; however, factors such as long extraction times and high temperatures degrade polysaccharides. Therefore, this study aimed to increase the yield of U. pinnatifida sporophyll extract (UPE), a U. pinnatifida byproduct, using ultrasonication, an environmentally friendly extraction method, and identify UPE components with antioxidant activity. UPE_2, 4, 6, and 8 extracts were obtained at extraction times of 2, 4, 6, and 8 h, respectively. UPE_8 had the highest yield (31.91%) and polysaccharide (69.22%), polyphenol, (8.59 GAE µg/mg), and fucoxanthin contents (2.3 µg/g). UPE_8 showed the greatest protective and inhibitory effects on ROS generation in H2O2-damaged Vero cells. Ethanol precipitation of UPE_8 confirmed that UPE_8P (precipitate) had superior antioxidant activity in Vero cells compared to UPE_8S (supernatant). UPE_8P contained a large amount of polysaccharides, a major contributor to the antioxidant activity of UPE_8. This study shows that UPE_8 obtained using ultrasonication can be a functional food ingredient with excellent antioxidant activity.

RESUMO

Our study evaluated the clinical outcomes after implantation of a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) with enhanced intermediate function in eyes with epiretinal membrane (ERM). Patients with preexisting ERM who underwent cataract surgery with implantation of monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function were included retrospectively. According to the ERM grade and central subfield thickness (CST) obtained from preoperative optical coherence tomography, patients were divided into non-fovea-involving and fovea-involving ERM groups. At 1 month after surgery, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), contrast sensitivity, defocus curve, and satisfaction questionnaire were evaluated. Postoperative clinical findings were compared with age-matched controls without ERM. A total of 50 patients' eyes (28 and 22 in the non-fovea-involving and fovea-involving ERM groups, respectively) were compared with 42 control eyes. One month post-surgery, significant differences in UDVA, CDVA, and CST (corrected P was < 0.001, = 0.001, and < 0.001, respectively) were observed between the fovea-involving ERM and control group; however, no significant differences in UIVA and UNVA were observed between the two groups. Contrast sensitivity showed inferior results in the fovea-involving group without significance. Photic phenomena were reported less in the fovea-involving group than in the non-fovea-involving group. More than 70% of patients in both ERM groups were satisfied. Implantation of monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function could be a good option for patients with ERM that need intermediate vision.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intraocular pressure (IOP) can increase with postural changes, which can cause ocular complications. Neck extension is commonly used during palatoplasty to improve surgical angulation. This study evaluates whether neck extension affects IOP during palatoplasty. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, IOP was measured using a rebound tonometer at four specific time points: T1, 10 min after anaesthesia while in the supine position; T2, 5 min after neck extension; T3, at completion of palatoplasty with neck extended; and T4, 5 min after returning to the supine position. The primary outcome was the IOP at T2, and the secondary outcomes were the IOPs at T3 and T4. Haemodynamic and respiratory variables were also measured at each time point. RESULTS: Thirty-seven patients were included. IOP at T2 was significantly higher than at T1 (15.8 ±â€¯3.4 mmHg vs 10.5 ±â€¯2.8 mmHg, P < 0.001), and IOPs at T3 and T4 were also significantly higher than at T1 (T3 vs T1: 18.9 ±â€¯3.6 mmHg vs 10.5 ±â€¯2.8 mmHg, P < 0.001; T4 vs T1: 13.3 ±â€¯3.7 mmHg vs 10.5 ±â€¯2.8 mmHg, P < 0.001). However, no significant differences were observed for the haemodynamic and respiratory variables at any time point. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that the intraoperative neck extension position during palatoplasty significantly increases IOP in paediatric cleft palate patients undergoing a palatoplasty.

RESUMO

The cornea, with its delicate structure, is vulnerable to damage from physical, chemical, and genetic factors. Corneal transplantation, including penetrating and lamellar keratoplasties, can restore the functions of the cornea in cases of severe damage. However, the process of corneal transplantation presents considerable obstacles, including a shortage of available donors, the risk of severe graft rejection, and potentially life-threatening complications. Over the past few decades, mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy has become a novel alternative approach to corneal regeneration. Numerous studies have demonstrated the potential of MSCs to differentiate into different corneal cell types, such as keratocytes, epithelial cells, and endothelial cells. MSCs are considered a suitable candidate for corneal regeneration because of their promising therapeutic perspective and beneficial properties. MSCs compromise unique immunomodulation, anti-angiogenesis, and anti-inflammatory properties and secrete various growth factors, thus promoting corneal reconstruction. These effects in corneal engineering are mediated by MSCs differentiating into different lineages and paracrine action via exosomes. Early studies have proven the roles of MSC-derived exosomes in corneal regeneration by reducing inflammation, inhibiting neovascularization, and angiogenesis, and by promoting cell proliferation. This review highlights the contribution of MSCs and MSC-derived exosomes, their current usage status to overcome corneal disease, and their potential to restore different corneal layers as novel therapeutic agents. It also discusses feasible future possibilities, applications, challenges, and opportunities for future research in this field.

RESUMO

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus was first discovered in 2009 as the causative agent of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome. Despite its potential threat to public health, no prophylactic vaccine is yet available. This study developed a heterologous prime-boost strategy comprising priming with recombinant replication-deficient human adenovirus type 5 (rAd5) expressing the surface glycoprotein, Gn, and boosting with Gn protein. This vaccination regimen induced balanced Th1/Th2 immune responses and resulted in potent humoral and T cell-mediated responses in mice. It elicited high neutralizing antibody titers in both mice and non-human primates. Transcriptome analysis revealed that rAd5 and Gn proteins induced adaptive and innate immune pathways, respectively. This study provides immunological and mechanistic insight into this heterologous regimen and paves the way for future strategies against emerging infectious diseases.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We aimed to report on the clinical outcomes of scleral lens applications in Korean patients with various corneal disorders. METHODS: This retrospective review was conducted for 62 eyes of 47 patients who had been fitted with scleral lenses for various corneal disorders. The patients were referred for inadequate spectacle-corrected visual acuity and rigid gas permeable (RGP) or soft contact lens intolerance. Uncorrected visual acuity, habitually corrected visual acuity, best lens-corrected visual acuity, topographic indices, keratometry indices, and lens parameters were evaluated. RESULTS: Twenty-six eyes of 19 patients with keratoconus were enrolled. Other conditions included corneal scar (13 eyes of 12 patients), phlyctenules (three eyes), laceration (four eyes), chemical burn (one eye), keratitis (one eye), Peters' anomaly (one eye), fibrous dysplasia (one eye), ocular graft-versus-host disease (two eyes of one patient), irregular astigmatism (18 eyes of 12 patients), and corneal transplant status (five eyes of four patients). The mean topographic values of the eyes include flat keratometric value (43.0 ± 6.1 diopters [D]), steep keratometric value (48.0 ± 7.4 D), and astigmatism (4.9 ± 3.6 D). Of the eyes fitted with scleral lenses, best lens-corrected visual acuity (0.10 ± 0.22 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution [logMAR]) was significantly better than the habitually corrected visual acuity (0.59 ± 0.62 logMAR, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Scleral contact lenses are a good alternative for patients with corneal abnormalities and those who are intolerable to RGP contact lenses, resulting in both successful visual outcomes and patient satisfaction, especially concerning keratoconus, corneal scar, and corneal transplant status.

RESUMO

Patau syndrome (trisomy 13) is a severe disorder associated with multiple systemic defects. Patau syndrome is commonly associated with ocular abnormalities but rarely associated with congenital glaucoma. To obtain a better surgical view, palatoplasty requires neck extension during surgery. The intraocular pressure (IOP) of patients with Patau syndrome can increase owing to the neck extension position while undergoing palatoplasty, particularly in those with congenital glaucoma. Here, we describe a case with increased IOP measured using a rebound tonometer during palatoplasty in a pediatric patient with Patau syndrome and congenital glaucoma. This case shows that it may be important to reduce the degree of neck extension and shorten the operation time to minimize any increase in the IOP during palatoplasty in pediatric patients with Patau syndrome accompanied by congenital glaucoma.

RESUMO

Purpose: We evaluated the clinical outcomes after implantation of a new monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) with enhanced intermediate function in patients with preperimetric glaucoma and compared those with patients without retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defects. Methods: All patients were implanted bilaterally a new monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function. Patients with bilateral RNFL defects and no glaucomatous visual field defects were classified as the preperimetric glaucoma group. A total of 60 eyes of 30 patients with preperimetric glaucoma were compared with 60 eyes of 30 patients without RNFL defects. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), defocus curve, contrast sensitivity, and questionnaire were evaluated 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Results: No difference in binocular UDVA, UIVA, and UNVA was evident between the two groups at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. Additionally, there were no significant differences between the two groups regarding the proportion of severe or very severe photic phenomena, such as glare and halos, or the overall satisfaction. Conclusion: Bilateral implantation of a new monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function in patients with preperimetric glaucoma demonstrated commensurate clinical outcomes and could be considered a feasible alternative.

RESUMO

Because of the limited differentiation capacity of human corneal endothelial cells (CECs), stem cells have emerged as a potential remedy for corneal endothelial dysfunction (CED). This study aimed to demonstrate the differentiation of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) into CECs and to investigate the efficacy of MSC-induced CEC injection into the anterior chamber in a rabbit model of CED. Human UC-MSCs were differentiated into CECs using medium containing glycogen synthase kinase 3ß inhibitor and two types of Rho-associated protein kinase inhibitors. In the MSC-induced CECs, CEC-specific proteins were identified through immunohistochemistry and changes in CEC-specific gene expressions over time were confirmed through quantitative RT-PCR. When MSC-induced CECs were injected into a rabbit model of CED, corneal opacity and neovascularization were improved compared with the non-transplanted control or MSC injection group. We also confirmed that MSC-induced CECs were well engrafted as evidenced by human mitochondrial DNA in the central cornea of an animal model. Therefore, we demonstrated the differentiation of UC-MSCs into CECs in vitro and demonstrated the clinical efficacy of MSC-induced CEC injection, providing in vivo evidence that MSC-induced CECs have potential as a treatment option for CED.

RESUMO

Skeletal muscle atrophy is associated with many diseases including cancer, inflammatory diseases, neuromuscular diseases, and acute critical illness. Justicia procumbens L. has been used as a herbal remedy, but the pharmacological effect of J. procumbens on muscle atrophy has not yet been reported. Herein, we investigate the anti-atrophic effect of the n-butanol fraction of J. procumbens (JPBuFr) on dexamethasone (DEX)-induced muscle atrophy in C2C12 myotubes. The myotubes diameter, MHC positive area, ROS production, and mitochondria contents were observed under a fluorescence microscope, and various proteins related to degradation or synthesis were analyzed by western blots. JPBuFr significantly attenuated a reduction of myotube diameter, mitochondrial content, ATP level, myosin heavy chain, and myogenin expression induced by DEX. Furthermore, co-treatment of DEX and JPBuFr not only increased phosphorylation of Akt, mTOR, and p70S6K proteins but also decreased reactive oxygen species production and expression of protein degradation factors (MuRF1, Atrogin-1, FoxO3a) compared to DEX treatment. These results suggest that JPBuFr may provide potential protective effects against muscle atrophy, giving it potential for the development of anti-atrophic health functional foods.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adjuvant therapies such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy are usually given after cancer surgery to improve the survival of cancer patients. However, despite advances in several adjuvant therapies, they are still limited in the prevention of recurrences. METHODS: We evaluated the immunological effects of RNA-based adjuvants in a murine melanoma model. Single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) were constructed based on the cricket paralysis virus (CrPV) internal ribosome entry site (IRES). Populations of immune cells in bone marrow cells and lymph node cells following immunization with CrPVIRES-ssRNA were determined using flow cytometry. Activated cytokine levels were measured using ELISA and ELISpot. The tumor protection efficacy of CrPVIRES-ssRNA was analyzed based on any reduction in tumor size or weight, and overall survival. RESULTS: CrPVIRES-ssRNA treatment stimulated antigen-presenting cells in the drain lymph nodes associated with activated antigen-specific dendritic cells. Next, we evaluated the expression of CD40, CD86, and XCR1, showing that immunization with CrPVIRES-ssRNA enhanced antigen presentation by CD8a+ conventional dendritic cell 1 (cDC1), as well as activated antigen-specific CD8 T cells. In addition, CrPVIRES-ssRNA treatment markedly increased the frequency of antigen-specific CD8 T cells and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) producing cells, which promoted immune responses and reduced tumor burden in melanoma-bearing mice. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that the CrPVIRES-ssRNA adjuvant has potential for use in therapeutic cancer vaccines. Moreover, CrPVIRES-ssRNA possesses protective effects on various cancer cell models.

RESUMO

Following the development of various types of vaccines, the use of adjuvants to boost vaccine efficacy has become a focus of research. Aluminum hydroxide (alum), the most commonly used adjuvant, induces a certain immune response and ensures safety in human trials. However, alum mainly induces only a Th2 response; its Th1 response is weak. Thus, we previously developed a single-stranded ribose nucleic acid (ssRNA) adjuvant that induces a Th1 response through toll-like receptors. Here, we explored whether 10-valent human papilloma virus (HPV)-like particle (VLP) vaccine formulated with ssRNA adjuvant and alum helped to enhance immune response and maintained memory response. The mice were immunized intramuscularly twice at 2 week intervals and were inoculated 4 days after the second boost (after about 1 year). The antibody response and T cell activation were measured by Elispot, ELISA using harvested serum and splenocytes. The 10-valent HPV VLP vaccine formulated with ssRNA adjuvant and alum increased the antigen-specific immune response more than alum used alone. It increased each type-specific IgG1/IgG2a titer, and antigen-specific IFN-γ cells. Furthermore, the ssRNA adjuvant with alum induced memory response. In memory response, each type-specific IgG1/IgG2c, IFN-γ, and IL-6 cytokine, and neutralizing antibodies were increased by the ssRNA adjuvant with alum. Overall, the ssRNA adjuvant with alum induced memory responses and balanced Th1/Th2 responses. The ssRNA adjuvant and alum may help to enhance prophylactic vaccine efficacy.

RESUMO

Purpose: Although several previous studies have investigated the relationship between tamsulosin use and surgical complications of cataract surgery, no population-based cohort study has been conducted for the Asian population. We aimed to investigate the relationship between tamsulosin use and surgical complications of cataract surgery in the Korean elderly population. Methods: This nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study included elderly patients (≥60 years) who had undergone cataract surgery in the period from 2003 to 2015. Baseline characteristics were age, sex, income, residence, and systemic, and ocular comorbidities (glaucoma, myopia, eye trauma, diabetes mellitus with ophthalmic manifestations, severe cataract, age-related macular degeneration). The exposure of interest was tamsulosin use within 1 year before cataract surgery. Logistic regression model was used to evaluate the relationship of tamsulosin use with surgical complications of cataract surgery. Results: The rate of surgical complications of cataract surgery was 0.88% (375/42,539) in the non-tamsulosin group and 0.83% (71/8,510) in the tamsulosin group. The groups showed no significant difference in the risk of surgical complications of cataract surgery in the unadjusted model [odds ratio (OR) = 0.946; 95% confidence interval (CI):0.733-1.220; P = 0.669]. Additionally, tamsulosin use was not significantly associated with surgical complications of cataract surgery in the fully adjusted model accounting for age, income, residence, and systemic and ocular comorbidities (OR = 0.997; 95% CI: 0.749-1.325; P = 0.981). Conclusions: The rate or risk of surgical complications of cataract surgery does not change with tamsulosin use. We suggest that better surgical techniques and surgeons' cognizance of the patient's tamsulosin use could improve surgical outcomes, without increasing surgical complications.

RESUMO

Purpose: In femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS), capsulorhexis can be performed with an ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) filled in the anterior chamber. We aimed to investigate changes in the laser properties in various optical aspects, such as focal shifting, reflection, and absorption associated with OVD. Methods: Simulation was achieved by calculating the laser power attenuation due to reflection and spot size change using the Gullstrand eye model. Additionally, we calculated the absorption coefficient by measuring the laser power passing through the OVD with a laser meter and evaluated the effect of absorption by the OVD. Results: In our simulation, power attenuation due to reflection was a maximum of 0.07%, and power attenuation was 0.08% even when considering the change according to the incident angle. Power attenuation due to the change of the spot size at the focus was 0.005%. Owing to the absorption of the OVD, a power increase of up to 13.5% was required for an anterior chamber depth of 3.0 mm to obtain the same effect as the aqueous humor. Conclusions: The main reason for laser power attenuation associated with OVD was laser absorption through the OVD, and could also be caused by laser cavitation bubbles. To complete a safe capsulotomy during FLACS, the laser power should be increased appropriately, considering the absorption by the OVD in the anterior chamber. Translational Relevance: The study results can be applied to calculate the optimal femtosecond laser energy to achieve complete capsulotomy during FLACS in the presence of anterior chamber OVD.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare clinical outcomes of a new monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) with enhanced intermediate function and an extended depth-of-focus (EDoF) IOL. SETTING: Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. DESIGN: Nonrandomized prospective comparative case series. METHODS: Patients presenting for cataract surgery and meeting all inclusion and exclusion criteria were implanted with a new monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function (Tecnis Eyhance ICB00) or an EDoF IOL (Tecnis Symfony ZXR00) bilaterally. Uncorrected (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate (UIVA), uncorrected near (UNVA), and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), defocus curves, and contrast sensitivity were compared after 3 months. Patients were administered questionnaires regarding visual symptoms, spectacle independence, overall satisfaction, and lens recommendations. RESULTS: 24 patients (48 eyes) were enrolled in the Eyhance group and 20 patients (40 eyes) in the Symfony group. Monocular and binocular UDVA, UIVA, and CDVA were similar in the 2 groups. Monocular UNVA and spectacle independence for near distance were better in the Symfony group, whereas binocular UNVA did not differ significantly in the 2 groups. Contrast sensitivity, glare and halo, satisfaction, and recommendation rates were similar in the 2 groups. Although some dissatisfaction and severe glare and halo were reported in the Symfony group, none of these was reported in the Eyhance group. CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral implantation of the Eyhance ICB00 IOL provided comparable clinical performances as bilateral implantation of the Symfony ZXR00 IOL. Binocular UNVA was similar, although spectacle independence was higher in the Symfony group, but this was at the expense of more glare and halos.
