RESUMO

Arsenic, a hazardous heavy metal with potent carcinogenic properties, significantly affects key rice-producing regions worldwide. In this study, we present a quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping investigation designed to identify candidate genes responsible for conferring tolerance to arsenic toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa L.) during the seedling stage. This study identified 17 QTLs on different chromosomes, including qCHC-1 and qCHC-3 on chromosome 1 and 3 related to chlorophyll content and qRFW-12 on chromosome 12 related to root fresh weight. Gene expression analysis revealed eight candidate genes exhibited significant upregulation in the resistant lines, OsGRL1, OsDjB1, OsZIP2, OsMATE12, OsTRX29, OsMADS33, OsABCG29, and OsENODL24. These genes display sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree similarities with other species and engaging in protein-protein interactions with significant proteins. Advanced gene-editing techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9 to precisely target and modify the candidate genes responsible for arsenic tolerance will be explore. This approach may expedite the development of arsenic-resistant rice cultivars, which are essential for ensuring food security in regions affected by arsenic-contaminated soil and water.

The importance of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in plants has been highlighted due to its critical role in mitigating metal toxicity, specifically countering the inhibitory effects of copper stress on rice plants. This study involved pre-treating rice plants with 1 mM GABA for one week, followed by exposure to varying concentrations of copper at 50 µM, 100 µM, and 200 µM. Under copper stress, particularly at 100 µM and 200 µM, plant height, biomass, chlorophyll content, relative water content, mineral content, and antioxidant activity decreased significantly compared to control conditions. However, GABA treatment significantly alleviated the adverse effects of copper stress. It increased plant height by 13%, 18%, and 32%; plant biomass by 28%, 52%, and 60%; chlorophyll content by 12%, 30%, and 24%; and relative water content by 10%, 24%, and 26% in comparison to the C50, C100, and C200 treatments. Furthermore, GABA treatment effectively reduced electrolyte leakage by 11%, 34%, and 39%, and the concentration of reactive oxygen species, such as malondialdehyde (MDA), by 9%, 22%, and 27%, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by 12%, 38%, and 30%, and superoxide anion content by 8%, 33, and 39% in comparison to C50, C100, and C200 treatments. Additionally, GABA supplementation led to elevated levels of glutathione by 69% and 80%, superoxide dismutase by 22% and 125%, ascorbate peroxidase by 12% and 125%, and catalase by 75% and 100% in the C100+G and C200+G groups as compared to the C100 and C200 treatments. Similarly, GABA application upregulated the expression of GABA shunt pathway-related genes, including gamma-aminobutyric transaminase (OsGABA-T) by 38% and 80% and succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (OsSSADH) by 60% and 94% in the C100+G and C200+G groups, respectively, as compared to the C100 and C200 treatments. Conversely, the expression of gamma-aminobutyric acid dehydrogenase (OsGAD) was downregulated. GABA application reduced the absorption of Cu2+ by 54% and 47% in C100+G and C200+G groups as compared to C100, and C200 treatments. Moreover, GABA treatment enhanced the uptake of Ca2+ by 26% and 82%, Mg2+ by 12% and 67%, and K+ by 28% and 128% in the C100+G and C200+G groups as compared to C100, and C200 treatments. These findings underscore the pivotal role of GABA-induced enhancements in various physiological and molecular processes, such as plant growth, chlorophyll content, water content, antioxidant capacity, gene regulation, mineral uptake, and copper sequestration, in enhancing plant tolerance to copper stress. Such mechanistic insights offer promising implications for the advancement of safe and sustainable food production practices.

OBJECTIVE: The introduction of psychotherapy in palliative and end-of-life care settings has become increasingly common and is effective in decreasing many psychological problems. This review reports the characteristics and effectiveness of individual psychotherapeutic interventions for patients receiving palliative and end-of-life care. In addition, the review reports the effectiveness of psychotherapies considering the expected life expectancy. METHODS: The PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for English-language articles published between January 2000 to May 2023. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies were included and classified into a total of nine types of psychotherapies, namely, dignity therapy (DT), life review therapy, narrative therapy, managing cancer and living meaningfully (CALM), individual meaning-centered psychotherapy, meaning and purpose therapy, meaning-making therapy, meaning-of-life therapy, and cognitive therapy. CONCLUSION: Most of the psychotherapies provided to patients receiving palliative and end-of-life care showed effectiveness in the reduction of negative emotions and positive factors related to end-of-life issues. Most studies targeted patients with advanced cancer; however, studies on DT did not limit the target group to patients with cancer. Considering the expected life expectancy, CALM was found to be suitable for patients receiving early palliative care.

This study investigated the hydrophobic-hydrophilic characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod coatings for potential biomedical applications. We examined the effects of different alignments of ZnO nanorods on the wetting and mechanical characteristics of the coatings. ZnO seed layers were prepared on stainless-steel plates using atomic layer deposition (ALD) at five different temperatures ranging from 50 to 250 °C. The ZnO nanorod coatings were then deposited on these seed layers through chemical bath deposition. The polycrystalline structure of the seed layers and the morphology of the nanorods were analyzed using grazing incidence angle x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical and wetting properties of the nanorod coatings were examined using nanoindentation and water-droplet tests. The seed layers produced at 50 and 250 °C showed stronger (0 0 2) peaks than the other layers. ZnO nanorods on these seed layers exhibited greater vertical orientation and lower water contact angles indicating a more hydrophilic surface. Additionally, vertically oriented nanorod coatings demonstrated greater elastic modulus and hardness than those of oblique nanorods. Our findings indicate that ALD technology can be used to control the spatial arrangement of ZnO nanorods and optimize the hydrophobic-hydrophilic and mechanical properties of coating surfaces.

Sinus venosus atrial septal defects (SVASDs), concurrent with partial anomalous pulmonary venous connections (PAPVCs), are a rare congenital heart disease in dogs. Surgical correction is essential when clinical signs or significant hemodynamic changes are present. We aimed to report on the successful surgical correction of an SVASD with PAPVCs, using a computed tomography (CT)-based customized 3D cardiac model. A 10-month-old male poodle was referred for corrective surgery for an ASD. Echocardiography confirmed a hemodynamically significant left-to-right shunting flow through an interatrial septal defect and severe right-sided heart volume overload. For a comprehensive diagnosis, a CT scan was performed, which confirmed an SVASD with PAPVCs. A customized 3D cardiac model was used for preoperative decision-making and surgical rehearsal. The defect was repaired using an autologous pericardial patch under a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Temporary pacing was applied for sinus bradycardia and third-degree atrioventricular block. The patient recovered from the anesthesia without further complications. The pacemaker was removed during hospitalization and the patient was discharged without complications 2 weeks post-surgery. At the three-month follow-up, there was no shunting flow in the interatrial septum and the right-sided volume overload had been resolved. The cardiac medications were discontinued, and there were no complications. This report indicates the validity of surgical correction under CPB for an SVASD with PAPVCs, and the advantages of utilizing a CT-based 3D cardiac model for preoperative planning to increase the surgical success rate.

We explored the genomic events underlying central neurocytoma (CN), a rare neoplasm of the central nervous system, via multiomics approaches, including whole-exome sequencing, bulk and single-nuclei RNA sequencing, and methylation sequencing. We identified FGFR3 hypomethylation leading to FGFR3 overexpression as a major event in the ontogeny of CN that affects crucial downstream events, such as aberrant PI3K-AKT activity and neuronal development pathways. Furthermore, we found similarities between CN and radial glial cells based on analyses of gene markers and CN tumor cells and postulate that CN tumorigenesis is due to dysregulation of radial glial cell differentiation into neurons. Our data demonstrate the potential role of FGFR3 as one of the leading drivers of tumorigenesis in CN.

Although Argonaute (AGO) proteins have been the focus of microRNA (miRNA) studies, we observed AGO-free mature miRNAs directly interacting with RNA-binding proteins, implying the sophisticated nature of fine-tuning gene regulation by miRNAs. To investigate microRNA-binding proteins (miRBPs) globally, we analyzed PAR-CLIP data sets to identify RBP quaking (QKI) as a novel miRBP for let-7b. Potential existence of AGO-free miRNAs were further verified by measuring miRNA levels in genetically engineered AGO-depleted human and mouse cells. We have shown that QKI regulates miRNA-mediated gene silencing at multiple steps, and collectively serves as an auxiliary factor empowering AGO2/let-7b-mediated gene silencing. Depletion of QKI decreases interaction of AGO2 with let-7b and target mRNA, consequently controlling target mRNA decay. This finding indicates that QKI is a complementary factor in miRNA-mediated mRNA decay. QKI, however, also suppresses the dissociation of let-7b from AGO2, and slows the assembly of AGO2/miRNA/target mRNA complexes at the single-molecule level. We also revealed that QKI overexpression suppresses cMYC expression at post-transcriptional level, and decreases proliferation and migration of HeLa cells, demonstrating that QKI is a tumour suppressor gene by in part augmenting let-7b activity. Our data show that QKI is a new type of RBP implicated in the versatile regulation of miRNA-mediated gene silencing.

Although ionizing radiation (IR) is widely used for therapeutic and research purposes, studies on low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) are limited compared with those on other IR approaches, such as high-dose gamma irradiation and ultraviolet irradiation. High-dose IR affects DNA damage response and nucleotide-protein crosslinking, among other processes; however, the molecular consequences of LDIR have been poorly investigated. Here, we developed a method to profile RNA species crosslinked to an RNA-binding protein, namely, human antigen R (HuR), using LDIR and high-throughput RNA sequencing. The RNA fragments isolated via LDIR-crosslinking and immunoprecipitation sequencing were crosslinked to HuR and protected from RNase-mediated digestion. Upon crosslinking HuR to target mRNAs such as PAX6, ZFP91, NR2F6, and CAND2, the transcripts degraded rapidly in human cell lines. Additionally, PAX6 and NR2F6 downregulation mediated the beneficial effects of LDIR on cell viability. Thus, our approach provides a method for investigating post-transcriptional gene regulation using LDIR.

Removal of trace CO impurities is an essential step in the utilization of Hydrogen as a clean energy source. While various solutions are currently employed to address this challenge, there is an urgent need to improve their efficiency. Here, we show that a bead-structured Mg, Cu, and Ce-based sorbent, Mg13CuCeOx, demonstrates superior removal capacity of trace CO from H2 with high stability. The incorporation of Mg boosts sorption performance by enhancing the porous structure and Cu+ surface area. Remarkably, compared to existing pelletized sorbents, Mg13CuCeOx exhibits 15.5 to 50 times greater equilibrium capacity under pressures below 10 Pa CO and 31 times longer breakthrough time in removing 50 ppm CO in H2. Energy-efficient oxidative regeneration using air at 120 °C allows its stable sorption performance over 20 cycles. Through in-situ DRIFTS analysis, we elucidate the reaction mechanism that Mg augments the surface OH groups, promoting the formation of bicarbonate and formate species. This study highlights the potential of MgCuCeOx sorbents in advancing the hydrogen economy by effectively removing trace CO from H2.

Cor triatriatum dexter (CTD) is an uncommon congenital cardiac anomaly in dogs. This case report describes successful membranectomy for CTD via partial venous inflow occlusion under mild hypothermia in a dog. A 7-month-old intact male mixed-breed dog weighing 20.5 kg presented with a history of abdominal distention, lethargy, and anorexia. Clinical examination, radiography, echocardiography, microbubble testing, and computed tomography revealed a remnant right atrium membrane obscuring the venous blood inflow from the vena cava. Considering the potential risk of re-stenosis following interventional treatment, curative resection involving surgical membranectomy via venous inflow occlusion was performed. By performing partial venous inflow occlusion under mild hypothermia (34.5 °C), sufficient time was obtained to explore the defect and resect the remnant membrane. The dog recovered without any complications, and the clinical signs were relieved. This case illustrates that partial venous inflow occlusion under mild hypothermia is feasible for achieving curative resection of cor triatriatum dexter in dogs.

Despite the therapeutic potential of recombinant proteins, their cell permeabilities and stabilities remain significant challenges. Here we demonstrate that cyclized recombinant proteins can be used as universal cargos for permeable and stable delivery into cells and polydiacetylene liposomes. Utilizing a split intein-mediated process, cyclized model fluorescent proteins containing short tetraarginine (R4) and hexahistidine (H6) tags were generated without compromising their native protein functions. Strikingly, as compared to linear R4/H6-tagged proteins, the cyclized counterparts have substantially increased permeabilities in both cancer cells and synthetic liposomes, as well as higher resistances to enzymatic degradation in cancer cells. These properties are likely a consequence of structural constraints imposed on the proteins in the presence of short functional peptides. Additionally, photodynamic therapy by cyclized photoprotein-loaded liposomes in cancer cells was significantly improved in comparison to that by their non-cyclized counterparts. These findings suggest that our strategy will be universally applicable to intercellular delivery of proteins and therapeutics.

To resolve the problem of target specificity and light transmission to deep-seated tissues in photodynamic therapy (PDT), we report a cancer cell-targeted photosensitizer using photoprotein-conjugated upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with high target specificity and efficient light transmission to deep tissues. Core-shell UCNPs with low internal energy back transfer were conjugated with recombinant proteins that consists of a photosensitizer (KillerRed; KR) and a cancer cell-targeted lead peptide (LP). Under near infrared (NIR)-irradiating condition, the UCNP-KR-LP generated superoxide anion radicals as reactive oxygen species via NIR-to-green light conversion and exhibited excellent specificity to target cancer cells through receptor-mediated cell adhesion. Consequently, this photosensitizing process facilitated rapid cell death in cancer cell lines (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, and U-87MG) overexpressing integrin beta 1 (ITGB1) receptors but not in a cell line (SK-BR-3) with reduced ITGB1 expression and a non-invasive normal breast cell line (MCF-10A). In contrast to green light irradiation, NIR light irradiation exhibited significant PDT efficacy in cancer cells located beneath porcine skin tissues up to a depth of 10 mm, as well as in vivo tumor xenograft mouse models. This finding suggests that the designed nanocomposite is useful for sensing and targeting various deep-seated tumors.

Modern irrigation practices and industrial pollution can contribute to the simultaneous occurrence of salinity and heavy metal contamination in large areas of the world, resulting in significant negative effects on crop productivity and sustainability. This study aimed to investigate the growth-promoting potentials of an important endophytic fungal strain SL3 and to compare its potential with exogenous IAA (indole-3-acetic acid) in the context of salt and heavy metal stress. The strain was assessed for plant growth-promoting traits such as the production of indole-3-acetic acid, gibberellins (GA), and siderophore. We selected two important crops, mung bean and maize, and examined various physiological and biochemical characteristics under 300 mM NaCl and 2.5 mM Pb stress conditions, with and without the application of IAA and SL3. This study's results demonstrated that both IAA and SL3 positively impacted the growth and development of plants under normal and stressed conditions. In NaCl and Pb-induced stress conditions, the growth of mung bean and maize plants was significantly reduced. However, the application of IAA and SL3 helped to alleviate stress, leading to a significant increase in shoot/root length and weight compared to IAA and SL3 non-treated plants. The results revealed that photosynthetic pigments, accumulation of catalase (CAT), phenolic contents, polyphenol oxidase, and flavanols are higher in the IAA and SL3-treated plants than in the non-inoculated plants. This study's findings revealed that applying the SL3 fungal strain positively influenced various physiological and biochemical processes in tested plant species under normal and stress conditions of NaCl and Pb. These findings also suggested that SL3 could be a potential replacement for widely used IAA to promote plant growth by improving photosynthetic efficiency, reducing oxidative stress, and enhancing metabolic activities in plants, including mung and maize. Moreover, this study highlights that SL3 has synergistic effects with IAA in enhancing resilience to salt and heavy stress and offers a promising avenue for future agricultural applications in salt and heavy metal-affected regions.

BACKGROUND: Conventional 2-Dimensional magnetic resonance imaging-based neuronavigation systems can improve the maximal safe resection in brain tumor surgery but can be unintuitive. A 3-Dimensional (3D)-printed brain tumor model allows for a more intuitive and stereoscopic understanding of brain tumors and adjacent neurovascular structures. This study aimed to identify the clinical efficacy of a 3D-printed brain tumor model in presurgical planning by focusing on differences in the extent of resection (EOR). METHODS: Thirty two neurosurgeons (14 faculty members, 11 fellows, 7 residents) randomly selected the two 3D-printed brain tumor models from the 10 manufactured models and performed presurgical planning following a standardized questionnaire. To compare the 2-Dimensional magnetic resonance imaging-based planning results with the 3D-printed model-based planning results, we analyzed the changing patterns and characteristics of the EOR. RESULTS: Of 64 randomly generated cases, the resection goal changed in 12 cases (18.8%). When the tumor was located intra-axially, the surgical posture required a prone position, and when the neurosurgeon was dexterous in surgery, there was a higher rate of EOR changes. 3D-printed models 2, 4, and 10, which all represented tumors in the posterior of the brain, had high rates of changing EOR. CONCLUSIONS: A 3D-printed brain tumor model could be utilized in presurgical planning to effectively determine the EOR.

Del-Nido cardioplegia (DNc) is a single-dose cardioplegia that is widely used in human medicine because of its long duration. In this report, we describe two cases of open-heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) using DNc. One dog was diagnosed with partial atrioventricular septal defect, and the other dog was diagnosed with myxomatous mitral valve disease stage D. Both dogs were treated with open-heart surgery with DNc to induce temporary cardiac arrest. No complications from DNc were observed, and the patients were discharged. Veterinary heart surgeons should consider DNc as an option for temporary cardiac arrest during open-heart surgery with CPB.

RATIONALE: Although regional metastasis to the lymph nodes is common in advanced oral cancer, extensive local invasion into surrounding structures such as the mandible, skin and soft tissue of the neck, and masticator space is relatively rare. Sometimes surgical treatment cannot be performed and only palliative chemotherapy and radiation therapy are offered to preserve the quality of life of patients with advanced oral cancer. Nevertheless, the surgical resection of tumors remains the most effective treatment. This study presents a case of aggressive mouth floor cancer in which extensive composite defects on the mouth floor, oral mucosa, mandible, skin and soft tissue of the neck caused by tumor resection were reconstructed. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 66-year-old man and a 65-year-old man with no significant personal or family history visited our clinic due to a large and multiple masses on the floor of the mouth and both sides of the neck. DIAGNOSIS: Histopathological evaluation of the biopsy specimen revealed squamous cell carcinoma. INTERVENTIONS: A fibula osteocutaneous free flap and customized titanium plate were used for the intraoral lining. Mandibular reconstruction was performed using a 3D-printed bone model, and an anterolateral thigh free flap was used to resurface the anterior of the neck. OUTCOMES: Reconstruction using this method was successful, and excellent functional and aesthetic outcomes were achieved without cancer recurrence. LESSONS: This study show that the reconstruction of extensive composite defects of the oral mucosa, mandible, and neck soft tissue following surgical resection of mouth floor cancer can be performed in a single-stage operation. Through a single-stage reconstruction, both excellent functional aspects without cancer recurrence and satisfactory aesthetic outcomes can be obtained.

The minimum bronchial cuff volume (BCVmin) of a double-lumen tube (DLT) without air leaks during lung isolation may vary among individuals, and lateral positioning could increase the bronchial cuff pressure (BCP). We investigated the effect of initially established BCVmin (BCVi) on the change in BCP by lateral positioning. Seventy patients who underwent elective lung surgery were recruited and divided into two groups according to the BCVi obtained during anesthetic induction in each patient. Outcome analysis was conducted using data from 39 patients with a BCVi greater than 0 (BCVi > 0 group) and 27 with a BCVi of 0 (BCVi = 0 group). The primary outcome was a change in the value measured in the supine and lateral positions of the initially established BCP (BCPi; BCP at the time of BCVi injection), which was significantly larger in the BCVi > 0 group than in the BCVi = 0 group (1.5 (0.5-6.0) cmH2O vs. 0.0 (0.0-1.0) cmH2O; p < 0.001). BCVi was related to the left main bronchus (LMB) diameter (Spearman's rho = 0.676, p < 0.001) and the gap between the LMB diameter and the outer diameter of the bronchial cuff (Spearman's rho = 0.553, p < 0.001). Therefore, selecting a DLT size with a bronchial cuff that fits each patient's LMB may be useful in minimizing the change in BCP when performing lateral positioning during thoracic surgery. If the bronchial cuff requires unavoidable initial inflation, it is necessary to be aware that BCP may increase during lateral positioning and to monitor the BCP regularly if possible.

Salinity stress is one of the major abiotic factors limiting crop yield in arid and semi-arid regions. Plant growth-promoting fungi can help plants thrive in stressful conditions. In this study, we isolated and characterized 26 halophilic fungi (endophytic, rhizospheric, and soil) from the coastal region of Muscat, Oman, for plant growth-promoting activities. About 16 out of 26 fungi were found to produce IAA, and about 11 isolates (MGRF1, MGRF2, GREF1, GREF2, TQRF4, TQRF5, TQRF5, TQRF6, TQRF7, TQRF8, TQRF2) out of 26 strains were found to significantly improve seed germination and seedling growth of wheat. To evaluate the effect of the above-selected strains on salt tolerance in wheat, we grew wheat seedlings in 150 mM, 300 mM NaCl and SW (100% seawater) treatments and inoculated them with the above strains. Our findings showed that fungal strains MGRF1, MGRF2, GREF2, and TQRF9 alleviate 150 mM salt stress and increase shoot length compared to their respective control plants. However, in 300 mM stressed plants, GREF1 and TQRF9 were observed to improve shoot length. Two strains, GREF2 and TQRF8, also promoted plant growth and reduced salt stress in SW-treated plants. Like shoot length, an analogous pattern was observed in root length, and different salt stressors such as 150 mM, 300 mM, and SW reduced root length by up to 4%, 7.5%, and 19.5%, respectively. Three strains, GREF1, TQRF7, and MGRF1, had higher catalase (CAT) levels, and similar results were observed in polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and GREF1 inoculation dramatically raised the PPO level in 150 mM salt stress. The fungal strains had varying effects, with some, such as GREF1, GREF2, and TQRF9, showing a significant increase in protein content as compared to their respective control plants. Under salinity stress, the expression of DREB2 and DREB6 genes was reduced. However, the WDREB2 gene, on the other hand, was shown to be highly elevated during salt stress conditions, whereas the opposite was observed in inoculated plants.

The WRKY and bHLH transcription factors have been implicated in the regulation of gene expression during various physiological processes in plants, especially in plant stress responses. However, little information about the heavy metal-responsive SlWRKY and SlbHLH in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is available. We performed a genome-wide investigation for these two TF families in S. lycopersicum and determined their role in cadmium (Cd) stress tolerance. Furthermore, ortholog analysis with the Arabidopsis genome led to classifying WRKY and bHLH ortholog genes into nine and 11 clusters, respectively. The comparative phylogenetic analysis revealed duplication events and gene loss in Arabidopsis and S. lycopersicum, which occurred during evolution both before and after the last common ancestor of the two species. Orthologous relationships are also supported by additional evidence, such as gene structure, conserved motif compositions, and protein-protein interaction networks for the majority of genes, suggesting their similar functions. A comprehensive transcriptomics analysis revealed that both WRKY and bHLH genes were differentially expressed in response to cadmium stress as compared with control plants. A gene ontology analysis revealed that most WRKYs and bHLHs are DNA-binding essential proteins that regulate gene expression positively and negatively. Analyses of interaction networks revealed that both WRKYs and bHLHs mediate networks implicated in several stress-signaling pathways. The findings of this work may help us to comprehend the intricate transcriptional control of WRKY and bHLH genes and identify potential stress-responsive genes relevant to tomato genetic improvement. Moreover, identifying heavy metal stress-responsive WRKY and bHLH genes in S. lycopersicum will provide fundamental insights for developing new heavy metal stress-tolerant varieties of tomato crops.

In this study, endophytic fungus Curvularia lunata strain SL1 was used to explore its bioremediation potential and growth restoration of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) under cadmium (Cd) stress. Our findings demonstrate that SL1 establishes a symbiotic relationship with tomato plants, which modulates the antioxidant system, secondary metabolites, and gene expression in tomato plants exposed to Cd stress. Under Cd stress, tomato seedling growth was significantly reduced by up to 42.8 %, although this reduction was mitigated by up to 25 % after SL1 inoculation. Similar to this, SLI inoculation inhibits Cd absorption and translocation to the upper parts of the plant. Additionally, during Cd stress, phytohormones related to stress, including jasmonic acid (JA), abscisic acid (ABA), and ethylene (ET), were elevated; however, SL1 inoculation lowered their level. RNA-Seq data revealed that the highest number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was detected in the comparison between control and 1 mM Cd, followed by 2 mM Cd stress. These DEGs were mostly related to oxidoreductase activity, catalytic activity, plant hormones transduction, and photosynthesis. The findings also suggested that SL1 could improve tomato tolerance to Cd stress by modulating Ca2+ signaling, phytohormone biosynthesis, MAPK signaling pathway, and some transcription factors.
