RESUMO

BACKGROUND: After neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), the SLN identification rate is lower and has a higher false-negative rate than that at upfront surgery. This clinical trial aimed to confirm the effectiveness of sentinel lymph node (SLN) surgery by determining the lymph node identification rate using multimodal SLN marker methods in patients with advanced breast cancer undergoing NAC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This clinical study is a prospective single-center randomized controlled trial involving patients with breast cancer receiving NAC. Patients are randomized (1:1:1) into arm A that involves the use of radioisotope (RI) plus indocyanine green fluorescence (ICG-F); arm B, RI plus vital dye; and, arm C, ICG-F plus vital dye. A total of 348 patients are needed. An interim analysis was performed on 50% of the patients enrolled. The primary outcome of this trial was the SLN identification rate. RESULTS: Among the 164 total patients (median age 51 years), T2 and N1 were the most common clinical stages. The identification rate of SLN was 95% in arm A, 92% in arm B, and 79% in arm C. To assess superior efficacy, the one-sided endpoint was set at α < 0.0056. Arms A and C showed a difference of 0.1597 in the detection rate (p = 0.0055). CONCLUSIONS: The use of ICG-F plus vital dye for SLNB was the least effective. The results show that the choice of tracer should be radioisotope in combination with one of the other tracers to have the highest SLN identification rate when SLNB cannot be implemented conventionally due to the circumstances of each institution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The recurrence of thyroid cancer poses challenges compounded by postoperative fibrosis and anatomic changes. By overcoming the limitations of current localizing dye techniques, indocyanine green-macroaggregated albumin-hyaluronic acid (ICG-MAA-HA) mixture dye promises improved localization. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the dye for recurrent thyroid cancer. METHODS: The nine patients in this study underwent surgery and postoperative ultrasonography. The dye was injected into recurrent lesions in all the patients preoperatively. During surgery, the lesions were confirmed with an imaging system before and after excision. If the lesion was unidentifiable with the naked eye, surgical excision was performed under the corresponding fluorescent guide. Side effects related to the dye injection and completeness of the surgery were evaluated. RESULTS: No side effects such as bleeding, skin tattooing, or pain during or after the dye injection were reported, and no discoloration occurred that interfered with the surgical field of view during surgery. In three cases (33.3 %), because it was difficult to localize metastatic lesions with the naked eye, the operation was successfully completed using an imaging system. The completeness of the surgical resection was confirmed by ultrasonography after an average of 5 months postoperatively. CONCLUSION: The study found that ICG-MAA-HA dye effectively located metastatic and recurrent thyroid cancer and had favorable results in terms of minimal procedural side effects and potential for assisting the surgeon. A large-scale multi-institutional study is necessary to prove the clinical significance regarding patient survival and disease control.

RESUMO

Background: Nodal staging from sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy has become the standard procedure for early-stage breast cancer patients. SLN biopsy implementation after chemotherapy has previously been evaluated. This questionnaire study aimed to investigate the current trend of SLN biopsy after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for locally advanced breast cancer. Methods and materials: We conducted a web-based survey among breast surgeons who are members of the Korean Breast Cancer Society. The survey comprised 14 questions about axillary surgery after NAC. Results: Of 135 respondents, 48.1% used a combined method of dye and radioactive isotope (RI). In the absence of SLN metastasis, 67.7% would perform only SLN biopsy, while 3% would perform ALN dissection. In case of SLN metastasis, the proportions of surgeons who would proceed with ALN dissection were 60.2% and 67.2% for less than two and more than three positive SLNs, respectively. Conclusion: The present study confirmed the increasing tendency to adopt SLN biopsy for axillary staging in patients who achieved complete response with initial nodal metastasis. It could be expected that the mapping methods for patients receiving NAC have become diverse, including RI, vital dye, and indocyanine green fluorescence. The implementation of SLN biopsy after NAC will grow in the coming years due to an increasing demand of minimally invasive surgery.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using an 808 nm laser irradiation with indocyanine green (ICG) has shown tumoricidal effects in a hepatocellular (HCC) orthotopic xenograft model. Recently, combining PDT with concurrent chemotherapy has shown synergistic outcomes and a better therapeutic effect for cancer treatment. In the present study, we utilized a combination of chemotherapy drugs and PDT using ICG in vitro and in vivo in a patient-derived orthotopic xenograft (PDoX) model. METHOD: We independently performed PDT and chemotherapy with sorafenib or doxorubicin in the Huh-7 and Hep3b cell lines by increasing the sorafenib or doxorubicin concentration and increasing the total energy of 808 nm light. Subsequently, we combined the two treatments to confirm the effects on cell viability. The combination index (CI) was evaluated in vitro, and thereafter, in the HCC PDoX mouse model, 808 nm laser irradiation with intravenously injected ICG and chemotherapy using doxorubicin were performed for twelve days. RESULT: The viability of the Huh-7 and Hep3B cell lines decreased rapidly as the concentration of sorafenib or doxorubicin increased and as the total energy of 808 nm light increased. The cell viability of the Huh-7 and Hep3b cell lines with combined PDT and chemotherapy was less than that with PDT or chemotherapy alone. The CI was <1 in the sorafenib- or doxorubicin-treated Huh-7 and Hep3b cell lines. In the HCC PDoX mouse model, tumor size was markedly decreased, and complete remission achieved compared to that of the single chemotherapy or PDT and control groups. CONCLUSION: The synergistic effect of concurrent PDT and chemotherapy in the HCC cell line and PDoX model was confirmed with no definite adverse effect. Concurrent PDT and chemotherapy could be applied in further preclinical studies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate post- and preoperative models for predicting recurrence after curative-intent surgery using an FDG PET-CT metabolic parameter to improve the prognosis of patients with synchronous colorectal cancer liver metastasis (SCLM). METHODS: In this retrospective multicenter study, consecutive patients with resectable SCLM underwent upfront surgery between 2006 and 2015 (development cohort) and between 2006 and 2017 (validation cohort). In the development cohort, we developed and internally validated the post- and preoperative models using multivariable Cox regression with an FDG metabolic parameter (metastasis-to-primary-tumor uptake ratio [M/P ratio]) and clinicopathological variables as predictors. In the validation cohort, the models were externally validated for discrimination, calibration, and clinical usefulness. Model performance was compared with that of Fong's clinical risk score (FCRS). RESULTS: A total of 374 patients (59.1 ± 10.5 years, 254 men) belonged in the development cohort and 151 (60.3 ± 12.0 years, 94 men) in the validation cohort. The M/P ratio and nine clinicopathological predictors were included in the models. Both postoperative and preoperative models showed significantly higher discrimination than FCRS (p < .05) in the external validation (time-dependent AUC = 0.76 [95% CI 0.68-0.84] and 0.76 [0.68-0.84] vs. 0.65 [0.57-0.74], respectively). Calibration plots and decision curve analysis demonstrated that both models were well calibrated and clinically useful. The developed models are presented as a web-based calculator ( https://cpmodel.shinyapps.io/SCLM/ ) and nomograms. CONCLUSIONS: FDG metabolic parameter-based prognostic models are well-calibrated recurrence prediction models with good discriminative power. They can be used for accurate risk stratification in patients with SCLM. KEY POINTS: • In this multicenter study, we developed and validated prediction models for recurrence in patients with resectable synchronous colorectal cancer liver metastasis using a metabolic parameter from FDG PET-CT. • The developed models showed good predictive performance on external validation, significantly exceeding that of a pre-existing model. • The models may be utilized for accurate patient risk stratification, thereby aiding in therapeutic decision-making.

RESUMO

In this study, we investigated the effect of the sulfur content in the NiCl2 precursor on the shape of nickel nanoparticles (Ni-NPs) prepared by chemical vapor synthesis. We obtained spherical Ni-NPs when using anhydrous NiCl2 mixed with NiSO4 or Na2SO4 with a molar ratio of 0.002 as precursors without changing any other process parameters whereas faceted Ni-NPs when using only anhydrous NiCl2 as a precursor. First-principles calculations supported experimental results, which showed that NiSO4-mixed NiCl2 and Na2SO4-mixed NiCl2 precursors favored the growth of spherical NPs.

RESUMO

Background: Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is a non-invasive biomarker for evaluating cancer prognosis. The aim of this study was to analyze the genomic profile of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in breast cancer patients, and evaluate its clinical implications. Methods: Targeted sequencing of ctDNA was performed in 38 patients using commercially available Oncomine Breast cfDNA panel. Whole exome sequencing was performed on matched tumor DNA (n=20). Survival analysis and response to chemotherapy in the study population were evaluated. The detected genomic variants were validated and serially monitored with droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) in 5 patients. Results: At least one variant or copy number alteration was detected in the ctDNA of 31 of 38 (82%) breast cancer patients, with the most common variants being in TP53 (50%), PIK3CA (15%) and ESR1 (14%). When comparing genomic profiles of ctDNA and those of matched tumor DNA in 20 patients, the concordance rate was 9.7% among positives. The patients with variants in TP53 showed significantly poorer overall survival than those without [hazard ratio (HR) =3.90, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.10-13.84, P=0.035] and its impact was also statistically significant in multivariate analysis with breast cancer subtype included. In serially monitored results, changes in the allele frequency of somatic variants (PI3KCA, TP53) of ctDNA were found to be reflective of response to chemotherapy. Conclusions: The genomic profile of ctDNA reflects and provides additional information to the tumor DNA genome profile. Follow-up monitoring of mutations detected in ctDNA is useful in the clinical management of breast cancer patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to objectively compare medical augmented reality glasses (ARG) and conventional monitors in video-assisted surgery and to systematically analyze its ergonomic benefits. METHODS: Three surgeons (thoracic, laparoscopic, and thyroid surgeons) participated in the study. Six thoracoscopic metastasectomies, six subtotal laparoscopic gastrectomies, and six thyroidectomies were performed with and without ARG. The subjective experience was evaluated using a questionnaire-based NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). Postures during surgeries were recorded. The risk of musculoskeletal disorders associated with video-assisted surgery was assessed using rapid entire body assessment (REBA). Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded. Muscle fatigue was objectively measured. RESULTS: NASA-TLX scores of three surgeons were lower when ARG was used compared to those with conventional monitor (66.4 versus 82.7). Less workload during surgery was reported with ARG. The laparoscopic surgeon exhibited a substantial decrease in mental and physical demand [- 21.1 and 12.5%)] and the thyroid surgeon did (- 40.0 and - 66.7%).Total REBA scores decreased with ARG (8 to 3.6). The risk of musculoskeletal disorders was improved in regions of the neck and shoulders. Root mean square (RMS) of the EMG signal decreased from 0.347 ± 0.150 to 0.286 ± 0.130 (p = 0.010) with usage of ARG; a decrease was observed in all surgeons. The greatest RMS decrease was observed in trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles. The decrease in brachioradialis muscle was small. CONCLUSION: ARG assisted with correction of bad posture in surgeons during video-assisted surgery and reduced muscular fatigue of the upper body. This study highlights the superior ergonomic efficiency of ARG in video-assisted surgery.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a personalized 3D-printed thyroid model that characterizes a patient's individual thyroid lesion. The randomized controlled prospective clinical trial (KCT0005069) was designed. Fifty-three of these patients undergoing thyroid surgery were randomly assigned to two groups: with or without a 3D-printed model of their thyroid lesion when obtaining informed consent. We used a U-Net-based deep learning architecture and a mesh-type 3D modeling technique to fabricate the personalized 3D model. The mean 3D printing time was 258.9 min, and the mean price for production was USD 4.23 for each patient. The size, location, and anatomical relationship of the tumor and thyroid gland could be effectively presented using the mesh-type 3D modeling technique. The group provided with personalized 3D-printed models showed significant improvement in all four categories (general knowledge, benefits and risks of surgery, and satisfaction; all p < 0.05). All patients received a personalized 3D model after surgery and found it helpful to understand the disease, operation, and possible complications and their overall satisfaction (all p < 0.05). In conclusion, the personalized 3D-printed thyroid model may be an effective tool for improving a patient's understanding and satisfaction during the informed consent process.

RESUMO

We investigated localization and safe resection margins for breast cancer patients undergoing breast conserving surgery (BCS) using ultrasound-guided indocyanine green fluorescence (ICG-F) marking. From April 2016 to March 2019, we prospectively enrolled 114 patients who underwent BCS using US-guided ICG-F marking and we compared these results with 300 patients who underwent BCS using US-guided skin marking from January 2012 to December 2016. Clinical features, identification rates, status of resection margins, and re-operation rates were analyzed. The ICG-F identification rate was 100% (114/114). The mean approach time for resection of the lesion ICG-F using group was about 13 min. The positive rate of frozen resection margins was 10.5% using ICG-F and 25.0% using sono-guided skin marking (p < 0.01). The rate of additional intraoperative resection was significantly lower in the ICG-F marking group compared to that in the sono-guided skin marking group (8.8% vs. 23.3%, p < 0.01). The rate of final positive resection margins was 3.5% in the ICG-F using group and 14.7% in the sono-guided skin marking group (p < 0.01). The rate of re-operation was 4.4% in the ICG-F using group and 4% in the sono-guided group (p = 0.79). At follow-up after the operation using ICG-F, no complications occurred. Using ICG-F during BCS could be a safe, sophisticated method for localization.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Autofluorescence imaging technology has been utilized for preserving or identifying parathyroid glands (PTGs) during thyroid surgery. We developed a wireless PTGs detection device linked with smart glasses that allows for real-time video recording and screen switching according to the light source. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to confirm the feasibility of the device and whether it would help preserve the PTG during the surgery. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted in 30 patients with 66 PTGs. The device's agreement with the physician's judgment was evaluated, and we determined how many PTGs were preserved from thyroidectomy. RESULTS: The positive agreement rate for PTGs detection between the surgeon and device was 70.9%. Inadvertent parathyroidectomy was identified in surgical specimens of 6 patients (20%). No PTG was removed when it was confirmed by the device (0/39). Of the 27 glands not detected by the device, there was inadvertent removal of 6 PTGs. CONCLUSIONS: PTGs can be preserved successfully when the detection of them by the device is consistent with the surgeon's discretion. A large-scale controlled study is necessary to demonstrate the practical effect of this device on hypoparathyroidism after thyroidectomy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Despite the growing evidence that metastatic lymph node ratio (MLNR) is a valuable predictor for the prognosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma, it has not yet been fully determined which factors give the ratio predictive value independent of the number of metastatic lymph nodes (MLNs). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: A comprehensive cancer center. METHODS: Recurrence and clinicopathologic factors were analyzed in 2409 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma who underwent total thyroidectomy and central node dissection. RESULTS: Cutoff values of MLNs ≥2 and MLNR ≥28.2% increased the recurrence risk (hazard ratio [95% CI], 9.97 [4.73-21.0] and 11.4 [5.53-23.3], respectively). Younger age, male sex, multifocality, tumor size, lymphatic and vascular invasion, and gross extrathyroidal extension positively correlated with MLN and MLNR (all P < .05). Meanwhile, lymphocytic thyroiditis negatively correlated with MLNR in female patients (P < .001), by increasing total lymph node yields as compared with papillary thyroid carcinoma without lymphocytic thyroiditis. In multivariate analysis, younger age, tumor size, and lymphatic invasion remained significant in male and female patients for MLN and MLNR; lymphocytic thyroiditis was also significantly correlated with MLNR in female patients. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that MLN and MLNR are independently observed prognostic markers for tumor recurrence. However, lymphocytic thyroiditis in female patients seems to have lower MLNR by increasing total lymph node yields. In light of their association, a different cutoff for MLNR needs to be applied according to the presence or absence of underlying lymphocytic thyroiditis in the use of MLNR for predicting the recurrence. RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to evaluate the role of early F-18 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) in non-small cell lung cancer patients undergoing immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment.Twenty-four non-small cell lung cancer patients who received nivolumab or pembrolizumab and underwent FDG PET/CT as an interim analysis after 2 or 3 cycles of ICI treatment were retrospectively enrolled. Tumor response was assessed using the PET Response Criteria in Solid Tumors 1.0 (PERCIST) and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) criteria after 2 or 3 cycles of ICI treatment (SCAN-1) and after an additional 2 cycles of ICI treatment (SCAN-2). The best overall response was determined by FDG PET/CT or chest CT at ≥ 3 months after therapy initiation, and the clinical benefit was investigated. progression-free survival was investigated, and its correlation with clinicopathologic and metabolic parameters was examined using a Cox multivariate proportional hazards model. In the interim analysis, 4 patients achieved a complete metabolic response (CMR), 1 patient exhibited a partial metabolic response (PMR), and 14 patients had Progressive metabolic disease (PMD) according to the PERCIST and EORTC criteria. Four patients showed stable metabolic disease (SMD) according to the PERCIST criteria, and 2 patients showed different responses (i.e., PMR) according to the EORTC criteria. Patients with a CMR or PMR at SCAN-1 had a clinical benefit. Among the 4 patients with SMD at SCAN-1, only 1 experienced a clinical benefit regardless of the percent change in the peak standardized uptake value. Two patients with discordant response assessments between the PERCIST and EORTC criteria showed conflicting clinical benefits. Among the 14 patients with PMD, none experienced any clinical benefit. Only metabolic parameters were significant factors for predicting progression in the multivariate analysis (peak standardized uptake value and metabolic tumor volume, HRs of 1.18 and 1.00, respectively).Based on early F-18 FDG PET/CT after ICI treatment, metabolic parameters could predict post-treatment progression. Responses after ICI treatment were correctly assessed in patients with a CMR, a PMR, and PMD, but patients with SMD required a meticulous follow-up because of varying clinical benefits.

RESUMO

BACKGROUNDS: Recently, a dualistic carcinogenesis model of ovarian cancer has emerged. We aimed to investigate differences in the glycolytic phenotypes of type I and type II ovarian carcinoma on the basis of FDG uptake and in the pathological features according to tumour grade and histology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 386 epithelial ovarian carcinoma patients underwent debulking surgery, and the histopathological results of the patients were retrospectively reviewed from 2003 to 2017. Among these patients, 170 patients had histopathological data that were available due to primary cytoreductive surgery and could be analysed regarding FDG avidity in type I and type II ovarian cancer. The FDG uptake of the tumour (SUVmax), metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) were analysed according to the tumour grade, histology and type of ovarian carcinogenesis (type I and II) and prognosis. RESULTS: Among the 386 patients, there was a significant difference in SUVmax among ovarian cancer subtypes. There was a significant increase in SUVmax as the tumour grade increased (8.08 ±â€¯0.63, 10.5 ±â€¯0.40, and 12.7 ±â€¯0.38 for grades I, II and III, respectively, Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.0001). Among the 90 type I and 80 type II ovarian carcinoma patients, there was a significant difference in SUVmax (type I and II, 9.47 ±â€¯0.54 and 12.97 ±â€¯0.70, respectively, Mann-Whitney test, p = 0.0003). However, no significant change in SUVmax was observed between BRCA-positive and BRCA-negative patients (N = 80, 13.8 ±â€¯5.78 and 12.4 ±â€¯6.30, Student's t-test, p = 0.3075). Among clinicopathologic and metabolic parameters, type of ovarian cancer, MTV and CA125 were significant factors in the prediction of recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: The glycolytic phenotype was related to tumour grade and histological subtype, with significant differences between type I and II ovarian cancer. SUVmax of the ovarian cancer would be considered in the differentiation of type I and II ovarian cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Most patients with thyroid cancer suffer from salivary gland (SG) dysfunctions after radioiodine (RI) therapy. We investigated the effects of keratinocyte growth factor (KGF)-1 on RI-induced SG dysfunction in an animal model. METHODS: Six C57BL/6 mice were assigned to each of the following groups: treatment naïve control group, RI group, and RI+KGF-1 group. Body and SG weights, salivary flow rates, salivary lag times and changes in 99mTc pertechnetate uptake and excretion were measured, and histologic changes were noted. Amylase activities and epidermal growth factor (EGF) concentrations in saliva were also measured. In addition, TUNEL assays were performed and apoptosis-related protein expressions were assessed. RESULTS: RI-induced reductions in salivary flow rates and increases in salivary lag times observed in the RI group were not observed in RI+KGF-1 group. Mice in RI group had higher HIF1a levels than controls, but HIF1a levels in RI+KGF-1 group were similar to those in control group. Furthermore, mice in RI+KGF-1 group had more mucin stained acini and decreased periductal fibrosis than mice in RI group, and tissue remodeling of many salivary epithelial cells (AQP5) and endothelial cells (CD31) were observed in RI+KGF-1 group. Amylase activity and expression in saliva were greater in RI+KGF-1 group than in RI group, and fewer apoptotic cells were observed in RI+KGF-1 group. Furthermore, BCLxl (anti-apoptotic) expression was higher, and Bax (pro-apoptotic) expression was lower in RI+KGF-1 group than in RI group. CONCLUSIONS: Local delivery of KGF-1 might prevent RI-induced SG damage by reducing apoptosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma notably takes up and retains indocyanine green (ICG). Here, we investigated whether patient-derived orthotopic xenograft of hepatocellular carcinoma could accumulate ICG and show full remission via phototherapy. METHODS: NIR light and ICG were tested for cytotoxicity in cancerous cell lines (Huh-7, Hep3B). Patient-derived orthotopic xenograft (PDoX) mice were subjected to phototherapy comprising of daily NIR exposure (0.5-1.75 W/cm2) and intravenous injection of ICG (5-20 mg/kg2). Moreover, NIR laser was flashed on individual mouse until hepatocellular carcinoma completely loss the fluorescence, as determined by NIR camera. RESULTS: Cytotoxicity increased in response to the input energy, but insufficient energy (< 150 joule/cm2) was irresponsive at all irradiances. NIR irradiance in the range of 0.5-1.75 W/cm2 took 5-7 days to elicit complete remission from PDoX mice in combination with 20 mg/kg ICG. In contrast, phototherapy could completely ablate hepatocellular carcinoma at 5-15 mg/kg ICG. CONCLUSIONS: ICG could potentiate the tumoricidal ability of NIR light in a dose-dependent manner, and vice versa. Regardless of ICG dosage, however, phototherapy treated group showed a relatively high survival rate compared to the non-treated group. Notably, real-time phototherapy could halve the effective ICG dosage for full remission of deep-seated tumor.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to investigate the dose-response characteristics of radioiodine on salivary glands and to investigate the mechanism responsible for radioiodine-induced salivary glands toxicity. METHODS: Twenty-four mice were divided into six groups: 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.40, and 0.80 mCi/20 g mouse, administered orally. Mortalities were noted 12 months after radioiodine administration. Body weights, gland weights, salivary lag times, flow rates, and changes in 99m Tc pertechnetate were recorded. Histopathological changes and mRNA expressions were also evaluated, and immunohistochemical analysis and apoptotic assays were performed. RESULTS: Survival rates, body weights, gland weights, and flow rates decreased, and lag times increased on increasing radioiodine dose. Animals administered radioiodine showed acinar atrophy, striated duct dilations, and lymphocytic infiltration in glands and irregular destruction of epithelial surfaces of tongue. The uptake and excretion of 99m Tc pertechnetate were impaired by radioiodine. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that numbers of salivary epithelial, myoepithelial, and endothelial cells decreased and that numbers of ductal cells increased with radioiodine dose. Oxidative stress biomarker levels increased; reactive oxygen species scavenger levels decreased; and numbers of apoptotic cells increased in animals exposed to higher radioiodine doses. CONCLUSION: These dose-related, long-term effects on salivary gland should be taken into account when determining radioiodine doses. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: NA Laryngoscope, 130:2173-2178, 2020.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study covered the diagnostic accuracy and usefulness of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging in muscle invasive bladder cancer patients through previously published literature. Through 30 September, 2019, the PubMed database was searched for eligible articles that evaluated PET/CT imaging in bladder cancer patients. In general, FDG PET/CT, the most commonly used PET/CT imaging, does not show good performance for the detection of primary lesions; however, according to the literature it could accurately assess pelvic lymph node (LN) status better than other imaging technologies and it was especially helpful in determining extra-pelvic recurrences. More recently, non-FDG PET/CT imaging, such as C-11 acetate and C-11 choline, has been introduced. Although further research is required, preliminary results show the potential of these techniques to overcome the drawbacks of FDG. This concise study will overview the role of PET/CT when treating muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC).
