In day-to-day living, individuals are exposed to various environmentally hazardous substances that have been associated with diverse diseases. Exposure to air pollutants can occur during breathing, posing a considerable risk to those with environmental health vulnerabilities. Among vulnerable individuals, maternal exposure can negatively impact the mother and child in utero. The developing fetus is particularly vulnerable to environmentally hazardous substances, with potentially greater implications. Among air pollutants, toluene is neurotoxic, and its effects have been widely explored. However, the impact of low-level toluene exposure in daily life remains unclear. Herein, we evaluated 194 mothers and infants from the Growing children's health and Evaluation of Environment (GREEN) cohort to determine the possible effects of early-life toluene exposure on the nervous system. Using Omics experiments, the effects of toluene were confirmed based on epigenetic changes and altered mRNA expression. Various epigenetic changes were identified, with upregulated expression potentially contributing to diseases such as glioblastoma and Alzheimer's, and downregulated expression being associated with structural neuronal abnormalities. These findings were detected in both maternal and infant groups, suggesting that maternal exposure to environmental hazardous substances can negatively impact the fetus. Our findings will facilitate the establishment of environmental health policies, including the management of environmentally hazardous substances for vulnerable groups.

Eunkyo-san is widely used in the treatment of severe respiratory infections. Mast cells not only serve as host cells for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), but also they also exacerbate Coronavirus disease in 2019 (COVID-19) by causing a cytokine storm. Here we investigated whether Eunkyo-san and its active compound naringenin regulate the expression of inflammatory cytokines and factors connected to viral infection in activated human mast cell line, HMC-1 cells. Eunkyo-san and naringenin significantly reduced levels of inflammatory cytokines including interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, IL-8, thymic stromal lymphopoietin, and tumor necrosis factor-α without impacting cytotoxicity. Eunkyo-san and naringenin reduced levels of factors connected to SARS-CoV-2 infection such as angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2, SARS-CoV-2 receptor), transmembrane protease/serine subfamily member 2, and tryptase in activated HMC-1 cells. Treatment with Eunkyo-san and naringenin considerably reduced expression levels of ACE2 transcription factor, AP-1 (C-JUN and C-FOS) by blocking phosphatidylinositide-3-kinase and c-Jun NH2-terminal kinases signaling pathways. In addition, Eunkyo-san and naringenin effectively suppressed activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3, nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-κB, and activation of caspase-1 in activated HMC-1 cells. Furthermore, Eunkyo-san and naringenin reduced expression of ACE2 mRNA in two activated mast cell lines, RBL-2H3 and IC-2 cells. The overall study findings showed that Eunkyo-san diminished the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines and ACE2, and these findings imply that Eunkyo-san is able to effectively mitigating the cytokine storm brought on by SARS-CoV-2 infection.

OBJECTIVE: The Act on Life-Sustaining Treatment (LST) decisions for end-of-life patients has been effective since February 2018. An increasing number of patients and their families want to withhold or withdraw from LST when medical futility is expected. This study aimed to investigate the status of the Act on LST decisions for patients with acute cerebrovascular disease at a single hospital. METHODS: Between January 2017 and December 2021, 227 patients with acute cerebrovascular diseases, including hemorrhagic stroke (n=184) and ischemic stroke (n=43), died at the hospital. The study period was divided into the periods before and after the Act. RESULTS: The duration of hospitalization decreased after the Act was implemented compared to before (15.9±16.1 vs. 11.2±18.6 days, p=0.127). The rate of obtaining consent for the LST plan tended to increase after the Act (139/183 [76.0%] vs. 27/44 [61.4%], p=0.077). Notably, none of the patients made an LST decision independently. Ventilator withdrawal was more frequently performed after the Act than before (52/183 [28.4%] vs. 0/44 [0%], p<0.001). Conversely, the rate of organ donation decreased after the Act was implemented (5/183 [2.7%] vs. 6/44 [13.6%], p=0.008). Refusal to undergo surgery was more common after the Act was implemented than before (87/149 [58.4%] vs. 15/41 [36.6%], p=0.021) among the 190 patients who required surgery. CONCLUSION: After the Act on LST decisions was implemented, the rate of LST withdrawal increased in patients with acute cerebrovascular disease. However, the decision to withdraw LST was made by the patient's family rather than the patient themselves. After the execution of the Act, we also observed an increased rate of refusal to undergo surgery and a decreased rate of organ donation. The Act on LST decisions may reduce unnecessary treatments that prolong end-of-life processes without a curative effect. However, the widespread application of this law may also reduce beneficial treatments and contribute to a decline in organ donation.

BACKGROUND: Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) exert immunomodulatory effects in the treatment of transplant rejection. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of ADSCs on the skin graft survival in a human-to-rat xenograft transplantation model and to compare single and multiple injections of ADSCs. METHODS: Full-thickness human skin xenografts were transplanted into the backs of Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were injected subcutaneously on postoperative days 0, 3, and 5. The injections were as follows: triple injections of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS group), a single injection of ADSCs and double injections of PBS (ADSC × 1 group), and triple injections of ADSCs (ADSC × 3 group). The immunomodulatory effects of ADSCs on human skin xenografts were assessed. RESULTS: Triple injections of ADSCs considerably delayed cell-mediated xenograft rejection compared with the PBS and ADSC × 1 groups. The vascularization and collagen type 1-3 ratios in the ADSC × 3 group were significantly higher than those in the other groups. In addition, intragraft infiltration of CD3-, CD4-, CD8-, and CD68-positive cells was reduced in the ADSC × 3 group. Furthermore, in the ADSC × 3 group, the expression levels of proinflammatory cytokine interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) were decreased and immunosuppressive prostaglandin E synthase (PGES) was increased in the xenograft and lymph node samples. CONCLUSION: This study presented that triple injections of ADSCs appeared to be superior to a single injection in suppressing cell-mediated xenograft rejection. The immunomodulatory effects of ADSCs are associated with the downregulation of IFN-γ and upregulation of PGES in skin xenografts and lymph nodes.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify the specific T cell co-stimulatory and co-inhibitory factors that play prognostic roles in patients with glioblastoma. Additionally, the unique histone H3 modification enzymes that regulate the expression levels of these specific co-stimulatory and co-inhibitory factors were investigated. METHODS: The medical records of 84 patients newly diagnosed with glioblastoma at our institution from January 2006 to December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining for T cell co-stimulatory factors (CD27, CD28, CD137, OX40, and ICOS), T cell co-inhibitory factors (CTLA4, PD1, PD-L1, TIM3, and CD200R), and histone H3 lysine modification enzymes (MLL4, RIZ, EZH1, NSD2, KDM5c, JMJD1a, UTX, and JMJD5) was performed on archived paraffin-embedded tissues obtained by biopsy or resection. Quantitative real time-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was performed for specific factors, which demonstrated causal relationships, in order to validate the findings of the IHC examinations. RESULTS: The mean follow-up duration was 27.5 months (range, 4.1-43.5 months). During this period, 76 patients (90.5%) died, and the mean OS was 19.4 months (95% confidence interval, 16.3-20.9 months). Linear positive correlations were observed between the expression levels of CD28 and JMJD1a (R2 linear = 0.982) and those of CD137 and UTX (R2 linear = 1.528). Alternatively, significant negative correlations were observed between the expression levels of CTLA4 and RIZ (R2 linear = -1.746) and those of PD-L1 and EZH1 (R2 linear = -2.118); these relationships were confirmed by qRT-PCR. In the multivariate analysis, increased expression levels of CD28 (P = 0.042), and CD137 (P = 0.009), and decreased expression levels of CTLA4 (P = 0.003), PD-L1 (P = 0.020), and EZH1 (P = 0.040) were significantly associated with longer survival. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the expression of certain T cell co-stimulatory factors, such as CD28 and CD 137, and co-inhibitory factors, such as CTLA4 and PD-L1 are associated with prognosis of glioblastoma patients.

BACKGROUND: A biological injectable material, paste-type micronized acellular dermal matrix (ADM), has been proven effective in wound healing by filling defects through tissue replacement. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of paste-type micronized ADM on soft tissue augmentation with that of the conventional fillers in animal experiments. METHODS: Two distinct paste-type micronized ADMs, which were mixed with distilled water (mADM) and gelatin (mADM+GEL), respectively, were compared with conventional fillers, hyaluronic acid (HA) and polymethyl methacrylate (COL+PMMA). Thus, four different types of fillers were each injected into the dorsum of nude mice to compare the volume retention and biocompatibility. During the 8-week experimental period, ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) images were obtained for volumetric analysis. Histological evaluation was performed using hematoxylin and eosin and CD 31 staining. RESULTS: According to the CT images at week 8, the mADM and mADM+GEL showed a higher volume persistence rate of 113.54% and 51.12%, compared with 85.09% and 17.65% for HA and COL+PMMA, respectively. The 2-week interval ultrasound images revealed that the mADM showed a volume increase in width rather than in height, and an increase in height for HA did not vary much. Histological analysis showed marked fibrous invasion and neovascularization with the mADM and mADM+GEL compared to that of the conventional fillers. CONCLUSIONS: Paste-type micronized ADM showed soft tissue augmentation with similar effectiveness to that of conventional fillers. Therefore, paste-type micronized ADM has potential as an alternative material for a soft tissue filler in tissue replacement. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the association of certain genetic alterations and intraoperative fluorescent activity of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) in brain metastasis (BM) of lung adenocarcinoma. A retrospective cohort study was conducted among 72 patients who underwent surgical resection of BM of lung adenocarcinoma at our institute for five years. Cancer cell infiltration was estimated by the intraoperative fluorescent activity of 5-ALA, and genetic alterations were analyzed by next-generation sequencing (NGS). The sensitivity and specificity for detecting cancer cell infiltration using 5-ALA were 87.5% and 96.4%, respectively. Genes associated with cell cycle regulation (p = 0.003) and cell proliferation (p = 0.044) were significantly associated with positive fluorescence activity of 5-ALA in the adjacent brain tissue. Genetic alterations in cell cycle regulation and cell proliferation were also associated with shorter recurrence-free survival (p = 0.013 and p = 0.042, respectively) and overall survival (p = 0.026 and p = 0.042, respectively) in the multivariate analysis. The results suggest that genetic alterations in cell cycle regulation and cell proliferation are associated with positive fluorescence activity of 5-ALA in the adjacent infiltrative brain tissue and influence the clinical outcome of BM of lung adenocarcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting the characteristics of patients with head injuries. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with head injuries at a regional emergency medical center in South Korea. METHODS: From April 2019 to November 2020, 350 patients with head injuries were admitted to our hospital. The study period was divided into the pre-COVID-19 (n=169) and COVID-19 (n=181) eras (10 months each). Patients with severe head injuries requiring surgery (n=74) were categorized into those who underwent surgery (n=41) and those who refused surgery (n=33). RESULTS: Head injuries in pediatric patients (<3 years) were more frequent in the COVID-19 era than in the pre-COVID-19 era (8.8% vs. 3.6%, p=0.048). More patients refused surgery in the COVID-19 era than in the pre-COVID-19 era (57.9% vs. 30.6%, p=0.021). Refusal of surgery was associated with old age (67.7±14.5 vs. 52.4±19.1, p<0.001), marital status (married, 84.8% vs. 61.0%, p=0.037), unemployment (42.4% vs. 68.3%, p=0.034), COVID-19 era (66.7% vs. 39.0%, p=0.021), and lower Glasgow coma scale scores (6.12±3.08 vs. 10.6±3.80, p<0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that refusal of surgery was independently associated with old age (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.084; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.030-1.140; p=0.002), COVID-19 era (adjusted OR, 6.869; 95% CI, 1.624-29.054; p=0.009), and lower Glasgow coma scale scores (adjusted OR, 0.694; 95% CI, 0.568-0.848; p<0.001). CONCLUSION: We observed an increased prevalence of head injuries in pediatric patients (<3 years) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, among patients with severe head injuries requiring surgery, more patients refused to undergo surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the past 6 years, acute respiratory infections have constituted an average of more than 70,000 cases in South Korea. It results in a high mortality rate in infants and the elderly with weak immunity. There are several types of respiratory viruses that invade the human respiratory tract and cause infectious disease. Reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) is mainly used for respiratory virus detection owing to its high sensitivity and reproducibility. In response, a multiplex real-time RT-PCR (rRT-PCR) assay was developed for the detection of influenza A and B viruses, parainfluenza viruses 1-4 (PIV1-4), human metapneumovirus, adenovirus, human rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2. Detection ability of RT-PCR assay was confirmed by applying it to a portable device capable of point-of-care testing (POCT). Amplicons were synthesized using primer pairs and probe sets designed for each target virus, and a standard curve was constructed to confirm the limit of detection. An experiment using nasopharyngeal swab samples was conducted to understand the field applicability of the rRT-PCR assay. Detection was confirmed in most samples. This study demonstrated that rapid and accurate detection results can be obtained using the multiplex rRT-PCR based POC test, and that it is possible to detect 14 types of respiratory viruses that are generally difficult to distinguish at the same time, enabling timely treatment. Furthermore, we expect that the portable PCR device can significantly reduce the processing procedure of clinical samples before testing, which is the main disadvantage of common RT-PCR tests and can help reduce costs.

Background and Objective: Procedural thromboembolism after a mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for an acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has rarely been studied. It may occur from the artery-to-artery embolization of atherosclerotic plaque in the aortic arch. We investigated the relationship between aortic arch calcification (AoAC) on a chest X-ray and procedural thromboembolism on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) after an MT. Materials and Methods: From January 2017 to December 2020, 131 patients underwent DWI within two days following an MT for an AIS. Procedural thromboembolism was defined as new DWI-positive lesions in other territories from the occluded artery on DWI within two days after MT. Results: Procedural thromboembolism was observed in 30 (22.9%) patients. Procedural thromboembolism was associated with old age (72.3 ± 9.44 vs. 65.7 ± 12.8 years, p = 0.003), a longer procedural time (77.6 ± 37.6 vs. 60.1 ± 29.7 min, p = 0.024), and AoAC (calcification (73.3%) vs. no calcification (29.7%), p < 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that procedural thromboembolism was independently associated with AoAC (adjusted odds ratio (OR): 6.107, adjusted 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.374-15.705, p < 0.001) and a longer procedural time (adjusted OR: 1.015, adjusted 95% CI: 1.001-1.030, p = 0.031). Conclusions: Procedural thromboembolism after an MT for an AIS was related to AoAC on a chest X-ray and a longer procedural time. Our results suggest that although rapid recanalization is the most crucial goal of an MT for an AIS, the importance of the careful advance of the guiding catheter through the aortic arch should not be underestimated to reduce the risk of procedural thromboembolism, especially in patients with AoAC on a chest X-ray.

The incidence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is high, and its outcomes remain poor. Mortality is attributable largely to metastatic disease and a dearth of effective therapeutic interventions. The lungs are the most common metastatic site. To elucidate the biological mechanisms underlying pulmonary metastasis and identify superior therapeutic strategies, we developed a novel and clinically relevant murine RCC model exhibiting enhanced pulmonary metastasis. Mice underwent intrarenal implantation using luciferase-expressing Renca, a murine renal adenocarcinoma cell line. Primary renal tumor progression and development of metastatic lung lesions were monitored in live mice using bioluminescent imaging, followed by post-mortem organ assessment. Cells were isolated from pulmonary metastases for reimplantation, followed by repeat monitoring and assessment. This process was repeated once more for a total of two in vivo passages to select for pulmonary metastatic Renca cell subpopulations. However, a single round of in vivo selection was sufficient to produce a near-maximally metastatic subpopulation. Relative to Renca cell-implanted mice, subpopulation-implanted mice exhibited shorter implantation-metastasis intervals (5 days), shorter implantation-moribundity intervals (sacrificed at 18.6±2.9 versus 22.3±1.1 days), a higher number of metastatic lung lesions at 23 days (183.9±39.0 versus 172.6±38.2) and poorer survival. Implantation of cells derived from the second round of in vivo selection produced no further significant differences in the above metrics. This model consistently and efficiently recapitulates RCC pulmonary metastasis while allowing in vivo monitoring of tumor progression, thereby facilitating elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying pulmonary metastasis and evaluation of therapeutic modalities.

Prader-Willi syndrome is a genetic disorder that is characterized by obesity, characteristic facial features, hypotonia, and sleep apnea. These abnormalities mean that airway management is difficult in such patients. Several previous reports suggest that neuromuscular blocking agents should not be used to reduce airway and respiratory complications in these patients. However, this is not always possible. Here, we report the case of a patient with Prader-Willi syndrome in whom anesthesia for ophthalmic surgery was managed successfully using sugammadex after administration of rocuronium.

Superficial temporal artery (STA)-middle cerebral artery (MCA) bypass surgery is considered not the primary but the last treatment option for acute atherosclerotic occlusions refractory to medical treatment. We retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent STA-MCA bypass surgery for acute atherosclerotic occlusion intractable to other treatments. From June 2010 to May 2014, 10 patients underwent STA-MCA bypass surgery for acute atherosclerotic occlusion at our hospital. The sites of occlusion were the internal carotid artery (n = 5) and the proximal MCA (n = 5). All 10 patients showed good patency in the anastomosis after bypass surgery, and postoperative cerebral angiography showed a newly formed border zone between the existing collateral blood flow and bypass graft blood flow. Transient neurological deterioration (TND) developed in 4 patients after STA-MCA bypass surgery (40%). All 4 patients showed worsened hemiparesis or aphasia 2-3 days after bypass surgery and improvement in neurological deficits within 1 week after bypass surgery. Diffusion MRI in patients with TND showed new cerebral infarctions near the newly formed border zone. In our series of bypass surgeries for acute atherosclerotic occlusion, postoperative changes in hemodynamic status, also called watershed zone shift, may be one of the causes of new cerebral infarctions near the newly formed border zone.

Previous studies have usually targeted the process improvement of patient treatment flow due to the difficulty of collecting Emergency Department (ED) staff data. In this study, we have proposed a hybrid model with Discrete Event Simulation, radio frequency identification applications, and activity-relationship diagrams to simulate the nurse movement flows and identify the relationship between different treatment sections. We used the results to formulate four facility layouts. Through comparing four scenarios, the simulation results indicated that 2.2 km of traveling distance or 140 min of traveling time reduction per nurse could be achieved from the best scenario.

The pectoral nerve block type II (Pecs II block) can provide adequate perioperative analgesia in breast surgery. The surgical pleth index (SPI) is used to monitor the nociception balance using pulse oximetry. We investigated the remifentanil-sparing effect of Pecs II block under SPI guided analgesia during total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). Thirty-nine patients undergoing breast surgery under remifentanil-propofol anesthesia were randomly assigned to the intervention (Pecs group, n = 20) or control group (n = 19). Remifentanil and propofol concentrations were adjusted to maintain an SPI of 20-50 and a bispectral index of 40-60, respectively. The Pecs group received an ultrasound-guided Pecs II block preoperatively using 30 mL of 0.5% ropivacaine. Total infused remifentanil during the surgery was significantly less in the Pecs group than in the control group (6.8 ± 2.2 µg/kg/h vs. 10.1 ± 3.7 µg/kg/h, p = 0.001). Pain scores on arrival at the postanesthetic care unit (PACU) (3 (2-5) vs. 5 (4-7)) and the rescue analgesic requirement in the PACU (9 vs. 2) was significantly lower in the Pecs group than in the control group. In conclusion, Pecs II block was able to reduce the intraoperative remifentanil consumption by approximately 30% and improve the postoperative pain in PACU in patients undergoing breast surgery under SPI-guided analgesia during TIVA.

BACKGROUND: The clinical and radiologic outcomes of symptomatic adult moyamoya disease (MMD) patients who have an occluded anastomosis immediately after bypass surgery are poorly studied. The clinical and angiographic outcomes of non-patent anastomosis in symptomatic adult MMD patients were retrospectively reviewed. METHODS: From August 2011 to November 2016, 31 revascularization surgeries, consisting of direct and indirect bypass, were performed on 29 adult MMD patients. Primary outcomes were evaluated based on the frequency of transient ischaemic attack (TIA) incidence and the recurrence of cerebral infarction and were assessed as improvement or worsening. RESULTS: Among 31 cases, computed tomography angiography (CTA) on the first day after surgery showed patent anastomosis in 20 hemispheres and non-patent anastomosis in 11 hemispheres. Follow-up conventional angiographies showed spontaneous recanalization of non-patent anastomosis in all occlusion cases. The incidence of TIA decreased in both the non-patent and the patent groups. Two newly developed cerebral infarctions were observed, which occurred in the patent group. Patients in the non-patent group also showed clinical improvement after surgery (p = 0.04), and no significant relationship was found between immediate postoperative patency and the primary outcome (p = 0.53). CONCLUSIONS: In our series, regardless of patency immediately after bypass surgery, delayed recanalization and clinical improvement can be expected after bypass surgery for adult MMD.

RESUMO

A new reference material for the determination of (137)Cs, (90)Sr and Pu isotopes ((238)Pu and (239,240)Pu) is being developed using dried oyster matrix by Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). The oyster was collected from Tongyoung harbour, southern part of Korea and the artificial radionuclides ((137)Cs, (90)Sr, (238)Pu and (239,240)Pu) were spiked into the material. After pretreatment and processing, the material was tested for homogeneity and massic activities were determined by measuring (137)Cs, (90)Sr, (238)Pu and (239,240)Pu. The reference value and extended uncertainty for those isotopes will be reported later.

ATP measurement provides an overview of the general state of microbial activity, and thus it has proven useful for the evaluation of nanoparticle toxicity in activated sludge. ATP bioluminescence assay, however, is susceptible to interference by the components of activated sludge other than biomass. This paper presents the interference identified specific to the use of this assay after activated sludge respiration inhibition test of silica nanoparticles (OECD 209). We observed a high degree of interference (90%) in the presence of 100 mg/L silica nanoparticles and a low level of ATP being measured (0.01 µM); and 30% interference by the synthetic medium regardless of silica nanoparticle concentration and ATP level in the samples. ATP measurement in activated sludge with different MLSS concentrations revealed interference of high biomass content. In conclusion, silica nanoparticles, synthetic medium and activated sludge samples themselves interfere with ATP bioluminescence; this will need to be considered in the evaluation of silica nanoparticle toxicity to activated sludge when this type of assay is used.

In this study, the effects of herbal ethanol extracts of Gynostemma pentaphyllum (GP-EX), on chronic electric footshock (EF) stress-induced anxiety disorders were investigated in mice, which were orally treated with GP-EX (30 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg) once a day for 14 days, followed by exposure to EF stress (2 mA, with an interval and duration of 10 s for 3 min). After the final exposure to EF stress, the elevated plus-maze and marble burying tests were performed, and the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain, the serum levels of corticosterone, and the expression of c-Fos in the paraventricular nuclei (PVN) were determined. Treatment with GP-EX (30 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg) significantly recovered the number of entries into open arms and time spent on open arms, which was reduced by chronic EF stress. GP-EX (30 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg) also reduced the number of marbles buried, which was increased by chronic EF stress. In addition, electric EF stress significantly decreased the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain, which was recovered by treatment with GP-EX (30 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg). The serum levels of corticosterone, which were markedly increased by chronic EF stress, were reduced by treatment with GP-EX (30 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg). Chronic EF stress-induced increases in c-Fos expression were also markedly reduced by GP-EX (30 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg) in the PVN. These results suggest that GP-EX shows anxiolytic functions, determined by the elevated plus-maze and marble burying tests, which are mediated by modulating the activity of dopamine and serotonin neurons as well as the expression of c-Fos in the brain, and the serum levels of corticosterone. Clinical trials of herbal GP-EX and its bioactive components need further investigation.
