Although Southeast Asia is among the largest producers and consumers of cigarettes in the world, information about environmental contamination with littered cigarette butts (CBs) in this region is very limited, especially in urban areas. In this study, we collected CBs in 58 locations of 6 categories (i.e., parks, apartments, streets, shopping malls, universities, and relic sites) in Hanoi, a megacity of Vietnam, to elucidate the occurrence, pollution levels, and physicochemical properties of this specific waste type. A total of 25,943 CBs with 86 brands from 16 origin countries was obtained, showing a density range of 0.0056 to 1.16 (mean 0.125) CB/m2 and cigarette butt pollution index (CBPI) range of 0.23 to 86.9 (mean 6.14). CB contamination levels were higher in parks, apartments, streets, and shopping malls than in universities and relic sites, but CB density and CBPI values varied greatly between locations of the same category. Generally, CB contamination levels measured in Hanoi were within a moderate range compared to other countries worldwide. Several physicochemical properties of CBs were preliminarily determined, which partly confirmed the formation of smoking-derived chemicals captured in CBs and their release potentials into surrounding environments. Further investigations are required to evaluate detailed chemical profiles, leaching behavior, and toxic effects of hazardous substances in CBs.

BACKGROUND: The crucial event driving nasopharyngeal tumorigenesis is the hypermethylation of chromosome 3p-located tumor suppressor genes. This case-control study aims to investigate the methylation characteristics of RASSF1A, Blu, ADAMTS9, and DLEC1 to potentially develop effective diagnostic biomarkers for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, either individually or in combination. METHODS: The methylation of RASSF1A, Blu, ADAMTS9, and DLEC1 in the collection of 93 biopsy samples and 100 healthy swab specimens were evaluated by Nested methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction. The strength of the correlation between candidate genes and nasopharyngeal carcinoma was estimated by the evaluation of odds ratios (ORs). RESULTS: Promoter hypermethylation of RASSF1A, Blu, ADAMTS9, and DLEC1 were found in 60.22%, 80.65%, 62.37%, and 74.19%, respectively, in nasopharyngeal carcinoma tumors. A significant association between the methylation status of candidate genes with nasopharyngeal carcinoma was reported. The methylation of candidate genes significantly increased the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in cancerous samples compared with control samples (OR > 1). Based on the value of the methylation index, methylation of at least one gene was found in 95.70% of nasopharyngeal tumors. Additionally, the methylation index among 93 tumors significantly correlated with advanced stage nasopharyngeal tumors. CONCLUSION: The study explored a higher frequency of hypermethylation at least one candidate gene. Methylation of a panel of potential genes can be utilized to discriminate between nasopharyngeal carcinoma and non-cancer cells, particularly in the advanced stages of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Thus, it could serve as a valuable marker for the diagnosis and monitoring of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Adoptive T-cell therapy targeting antigens expressed in glioblastoma has emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy to prevent or delay recurrence and prolong overall survival in this aggressive disease setting. Ephrin receptor A3 (EphA3), which is highly expressed in glioblastoma; in particular, on the tumor vasculature and brain cancer stem cells, is an ideal target for immune-based therapies. METHODS: We have designed an EphA3-targeted chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) using the single chain variable fragment of a novel monoclonal antibody, and assessed its therapeutic potential against EphA3-expressing patient-derived glioblastoma neurospheres, organoids and xenografted glioblastoma tumors in immunodeficient mice. RESULTS: In vitro expanded EphA3 CAR T cells from healthy individuals efficiently recognize and kill EphA3-positive glioblastoma cells in vitro. Furthermore, these effector cells demonstrated curative efficacy in an orthotopic xenograft model of glioblastoma. EphA3 CAR T cells were equally effective in targeting patient-derived neurospheres and infiltrate, disaggregate, and induce apoptosis in glioblastoma-derived organoids. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides compelling evidence supporting the therapeutic potential of EphA3 CAR T-cell therapy against glioblastoma by targeting EphA3 associated with brain cancer stem cells and the tumor vasculature. The ability to target patient-derived glioblastoma underscores the translational significance of this EphA3 CAR T-cell therapy in the pursuit of effective and targeted glioblastoma treatment strategies.

In this study, essential oils and waste hydrosols of leaves of Ocimum tenuiflorum in four different geographical locations were extracted by hydrodistillation method and using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) for chemical composition analysis. All four essential oil samples contained the main components (E)-ß-caryophyllene (27.8-49.0 %), trans-ß-elemene (20.3-37.1 %) and eugenol (9.0-44.0 %). Three of the four hydrosol samples had eugenol in absolute content (94.5-98.6 %), while the remaining hydrosol sample had two main components, elemicin (77.8 %) and eugenol (14.2 %). Essential oils and hydrosols demonstrated larvicidal activities against four important disease-transmitting mosquito species including Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Culex fuscocephala with 24-h LC50 values in the range 15.42-56.01 µg/mL and 53.88-97.80 µg/mL for the essential oils and the hydrosols, respectively. Essential oils and hydrosols strongly inhibited the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme of electric eels with IC50 values in the range of 25.35-107.19 µg/mL. Microemulsion (ME) can be considered as a sustainable pesticide formulation over 300 days and has improved larvicidal activity compared to free essential oil. The O. tenuiflorum in Vietnam can be considered a low-cost source of eugenol, botanical pesticides that control disease-transmitting mosquitoes, as well as having therapeutic potential to be further investigated.

INTRODUCTION: Quantifying the impact of smoking on life expectancy and the potential benefits of smoking cessation is crucial for motivating people who smoke to quit. While previous studies have attempted to estimate these effects, they were conducted more than a decade ago and did not include a significant demographic, people over 65 years old who smoke. METHODS: Mortality rates by age and smoking status were calculated using mortality relative risks derived from Cancer Prevention Study II, 2018 National Health Interview Survey smoking prevalence data, 2018 U.S. population census data, and 2018 U.S. mortality rates. Subsequently, life tables by smoking status-never, current, and former-were constructed. Life expectancies for all three smoking statuses, including those of individuals who had quit smoking at various ages ranging from 35 to 75, were then compared. Additionally, probability distributions of years lost due to smoking and years gained by quitting smoking at different ages were generated. Analyses were conducted in 2023. RESULTS: Compared to people who never smoked, those who smoke currently, aged 35, 45, 55, 65, or 75 years, and who have smoked throughout adulthood until that age, will lose, on average, 9.1, 8.3, 7.3, 5.9, and 4.4 years of life, respectively, if they continue to smoke for the rest of their lives. However, if they quit smoking at each of these ages, they will avoid an average loss of 8.0, 5.6, 3.4, 1.7, and 0.7 years. The chances of gaining at least 1 year of life among those who quit at age 65 and 75 are 23.4% and 14.2%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Quitting smoking early will avoid most years otherwise lost due to smoking. Even those who quit at ages 65 and above can still meaningfully increase their life expectancy.

The World Health Organization, in response to the growing burden of fungal disease, established a process to develop a fungal pathogen priority list. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the epidemiology and impact of infections caused by Talaromyces marneffei, Coccidioides species, and Paracoccidioides species. PubMed and Web of Sciences databases were searched to identify studies published between 1 January 2011 and 23 February 2021 reporting on mortality, complications and sequelae, antifungal susceptibility, preventability, annual incidence, and trends. Overall, 25, 17, and 6 articles were included for T. marneffei, Coccidioides spp. and Paracoccidioides spp., respectively. Mortality rates were high in those with invasive talaromycosis and paracoccidioidomycosis (up to 21% and 22.7%, respectively). Hospitalization was frequent in those with coccidioidomycosis (up to 84%), and while the duration was short (mean/median 3-7 days), readmission was common (38%). Reduced susceptibility to fluconazole and echinocandins was observed for T. marneffei and Coccidioides spp., whereas >88% of T. marneffei isolates had minimum inhibitory concentration values ≤0.015 µg/ml for itraconazole, posaconazole, and voriconazole. Risk factors for mortality in those with talaromycosis included low CD4 counts (odds ratio 2.90 when CD4 count <200 cells/µl compared with 24.26 when CD4 count <50 cells/µl). Outbreaks of coccidioidomycosis and paracoccidioidomycosis were associated with construction work (relative risk 4.4-210.6 and 5.7-times increase, respectively). In the United States of America, cases of coccidioidomycosis increased between 2014 and 2017 (from 8232 to 14 364/year). National and global surveillance as well as more detailed studies to better define sequelae, risk factors, outcomes, global distribution, and trends are required.

The corrosion of metals is still a huge challenge for various industries, and the pursuit of effective treatments ensures environmental sustainability. In this study, we utilized Chiquita banana sap-water extract (BSWE) to prevent mild steel from electrochemical corrosion in a 0.1 M HCl at room temperature. Corrosion resistance was assessed using various electrochemical methodologies, combining with surface characterization techniques. The results showed a high level of effectiveness when the corrosion current density decreased from 3292.67 µA cm-2 (for the sample immerged in the blank solution) to 187.33 µA cm-2 after 24 hours of immersion in the solution containing BSWE at a 2000 ppm concentration, equivalent to corrosion efficiency of 94.32%. Surface characterization revealed diminished corrosion on the inhibited steel surface due to the formation of a protective layer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results demonstrated the presence of BSWE ingredients combining with iron oxides and hydroxides to form a smooth protective layer. Furthermore, theoretical calculations also indicated that the addition of BSWE can reduce steel surface damage when exposing to corrosive environment. The inhibitor based on banana sap extract can be referred to as a sustainable protective coating since it is biodegradable, abundantly available in banana plants and free of other harmful substances.

Staphylococcus aureus is found in the normal skin and mucosa of approximately 30% of healthy populations and is the most common pathogen in human disease associated with bacteria. They are divided into methicillin-sensitive S . aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). The S. aureus strains carrying the Panton-Valentine leukocidin genes (SA-PVL) were initially believed to belong to the MRSA group; however, recent reports showed they also belonged to the MSSA group (MSSA-PVL). SA-PVL is common in skin and soft-tissue infections but rare in musculoskeletal infections, especially in spondylodiscitis. We are reporting a case suffering from cervical spondylodiscitis and epidural abscess associated with MSSA carrying the Panton-Valentine leukocidin genes.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the significance of adopting healthy lifestyles to mitigate the risk of severe outcomes and long-term consequences. OBJECTIVE: This study focuses on assessing the prevalence and clustering of 5 unhealthy lifestyle behaviors among Vietnamese adults after recovering from COVID-19, with a specific emphasis on sex differences. METHODS: The cross-sectional data of 5890 survivors of COVID-19 in Vietnam were analyzed from December 2021 to October 2022. To examine the sex differences in 5 unhealthy lifestyle behaviors (smoking, drinking, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and sedentary behavior), the percentages were plotted along with their corresponding 95% CI for each behavior. Latent class analysis was used to identify 2 distinct classes of individuals based on the clustering of these behaviors: the "less unhealthy" group and the "more unhealthy" group. We examined the sociodemographic characteristics associated with each identified class and used logistic regression to investigate the factors related to the "more unhealthy" group. RESULTS: The majority of individuals (male participants: 2432/2447, 99.4% and female participants: 3411/3443, 99.1%) exhibited at least 1 unhealthy behavior, with male participants being more susceptible to multiple unhealthy behaviors. The male-to-female ratio for having a single behavior was 1.003, but it escalated to 25 for individuals displaying all 5 behaviors. Male participants demonstrated a higher prevalence of combining alcohol intake with sedentary behavior (949/2447, 38.8%) or an unhealthy diet (861/2447, 35.2%), whereas female participants tended to exhibit physical inactivity combined with sedentary behavior (1305/3443, 37.9%) or an unhealthy diet (1260/3443, 36.6%). Married male participants had increased odds of falling into the "more unhealthy" group compared to their single counterparts (odds ratio [OR] 1.45, 95% CI 1.14-1.85), while female participants exhibited lower odds (OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.51-0.83). Female participants who are underweight showed a higher likelihood of belonging to the "more unhealthy" group (OR 1.11, 95% CI 0.89-1.39), but this was not observed among male participants (OR 0.6, 95% CI 0.41-0.89). In both sexes, older age, dependent employment, high education, and obesity were associated with higher odds of being in the "more unhealthy" group. CONCLUSIONS: The study identified notable sex differences in unhealthy lifestyle behaviors among survivors of COVID-19. Male survivors are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors compared to female survivors. These findings emphasize the importance of tailored public health interventions targeting sex-specific unhealthy behaviors. Specifically, addressing unhealthy habits is crucial for promoting post-COVID-19 health and well-being.

PURPOSE: To examine retinal feature dynamics in eyes with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) treated with anti-VEGF therapy and the relationship of these features with visual acuity. DESIGN: Post hoc analysis of the phase III, randomized, HAWK nAMD clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: Participants randomized to the brolucizumab 6 mg or aflibercept 2 mg arms of the trial. METHODS: Spectral-domain OCT scans collected at 4-week intervals were analyzed using an automated machine learning-enhanced segmentation and feature-extraction platform with manual verification. Quantitative volumetric measures of retinal and exudative features were exported at multiple timepoints over 48 weeks. Volatility of exudative features was calculated as the standard deviation of each feature value during the maintenance phase (week 12-48) of treatment. These features were examined for their associations with anatomic and functional outcomes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Longitudinal intraretinal fluid (IRF) and subretinal fluid (SRF) volume, subretinal hyperreflective material (SHRM) volume, ellipsoid zone (EZ) integrity (EZ-retinal pigment epithelium [RPE] volume/thickness), and correlation with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). RESULTS: Intraretinal fluid, SRF, and SHRM demonstrated significant volumetric reduction from baseline with anti-VEGF therapy (P < 0.001 at each timepoint). Ellipsoid zone integrity measures demonstrated significant improvement from baseline (P < 0.001 at each timepoint). Both EZ integrity and SHRM measures correlated significantly with BCVA at all timepoints (EZ-RPE volume: 0.38 ≤ r ≤ 0.47; EZ-RPE central subfield thickness: 0.22 ≤ r ≤ 0.41; SHRM volume: -0.33 ≤ r ≤ -0.44). After treatment initiation, correlations of IRF and SRF volume with BCVA were weak or nonsignificant. Eyes with lower volatility of IRF, SRF, and SHRM volumes during the maintenance phase showed greater improvements in EZ integrity (all P < 0.01) and greater gains in BCVA (all P < 0.01) at week 48 compared with eyes with higher volatility in those exudative parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative measures of SHRM volume and EZ integrity correlated more strongly with BCVA than retinal fluid volumes during treatment. High volatility of exudative parameters, including SRF, during the maintenance phase of treatment was associated with loss of EZ integrity and BCVA. INTRODUCTION: The often-cited Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate of 480,000 annual U.S. smoking-attributable deaths (SADs), including 439,000 first-hand smoke deaths, derives from 2005 to 2009 data. Since then, adult smoking prevalence has decreased by 40%, while the population has grown and the smoking population aged. An updated estimate is presented to determine whether the CDC figure remains accurate or has changed substantially. In addition, the likely annual smoking-related mortality toll is projected through 2035. METHODS: A well-established model of smoking prevalence and health effects is employed to estimate annual SADs among individuals exposed to first-hand smoke in the U.S. for two distinct periods: 2005-2009 and 2020-2035. The estimate for 2005-2009 serves as a benchmark to evaluate the reliability of the model's estimate in comparison to CDC's. The projections for 2020-2035 provide up-to-date figures for SADs, predicting how annual SADs are likely to change in the coming years. Data were collected between 2005 and 2020. The analysis was conducted in 2023. RESULTS: This study's estimate of 420,000 first-hand smoke deaths over 2005-2009 is 95.7% of CDC's estimate during the same period. The model projections indicate that SADs among individuals who currently smoke or formerly smoked have increased modestly since 2005-2009. Beginning in 2020, annual SADs will remain relatively stable at approximately 450,000 before starting to decline around 2030. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the CDC estimate of the annual mortality burden of smoking remains valid. Despite U.S. population growth and the aging of the smoking population, substantial reductions in smoking will finally produce a steady, if gradual, decline in SADs beginning around 2030.

The melon (Cucumis melo L.), a fruit crop of significant economic importance, is prized for its sweet and succulent fruits. Among variations of soluble sugars, sucrose, a disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose, is a key carbohydrate present in melon fruits. The sucrose content also determines the quality and value of melon fruits. However, the accumulation of sucrose is a complex process involving the coordinated actions of multiple enzymes and pathways. In melon species, there are two types of fruit ripening modes including climacteric and non-climacteric. Due to this biological characteristic, melon is emerging as a good model for studying the ripening process. Ethylene is a well-known phytohormone regulating the ripening of climacteric fruits. Recently, a few studies have elucidated a primary ethylene-dependent signaling pathway of sucrose accumulation in melon fruits. This review aims to provide a careful overview of the sucrose biosynthesis pathways in melon. It is essential to understand the molecular mechanisms of sucrose metabolism as well as its regulation mode. The information will be useful for developing molecular marker-assisted breeding as well as genetic engineering strategies aiming to improve the sucrose content and quality of melon fruits. In addition, even though limited, the impacts of genetic background and environmental factors on sucrose accumulation in melon fruits are also discussed. These are useful for practical applications in melon cultivation and quality management.

Importance: The prevalence of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use among US youths has increased significantly during the past decade. Identifying key factors highly associated with ENDS use is essential in monitoring and preventing this harmful behavior among youths. Objective: To identify the most important risk factors in wave 4.5 (ie, December 2017 to December 2018) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (PATH) data that are associated with ENDS use in wave 5 (ie, December 2018 to November 2019) among adolescents who were tobacco-naive at baseline. Design, Setting, and Participants: This prognostic study examined data from waves 4.5 and 5 of the PATH youth data set using machine learning techniques. The PATH study is a nationally representative longitudinal cohort study of tobacco use and health in the United States among individuals aged 12 years and older. The data analysis was carried out between January and April 2023. Main Outcomes and Measures: Wave 5 current ENDS use status of wave 4.5 adolescents who were tobacco-naive. Results: The analyzed data set comprised 7943 individuals who were tobacco-naive in wave 4.5. Among this group, 332 participants (4.2%) indicated their present use of ENDS in wave 5, 5047 (63.5%) were aged 12 to 14 years, 4066 (51.2%) were male, and 2455 (30.9%) were Hispanic. The most important risk factors of ENDS use in wave 5 among adolescents who were tobacco-naive in wave 4.5 were the likelihood of using ENDS if offered by a best friend (mean SHAP value, 0.184), the number of best friends using e-cigarettes (mean SHAP value, 0.167), household tobacco usage (mean SHAP value, 0.161), curiosity about ENDS use (mean SHAP value, 0.088), future intention to use ENDS (mean SHAP value, 0.068), youth's total average weekly earnings (mean SHAP value, 0.060), and perceptions of tobacco product safety (mean SHAP value, 0.026). Conclusions and Relevance: The findings of this study suggest that family and friends play an important role in ENDS use among adolescents. The top-ranking factors associated with ENDS use in this study are areas for further exploration, given the increasing prevalence of ENDS use among youths in recent years. Additionally, these findings highlight the important role of families and schools in shaping adolescents' tobacco-related knowledge, which can protect them from using ENDS.

BACKGROUND: Tracking the US smoking cessation rate over time is of great interest to tobacco control researchers and policymakers since smoking cessation behaviors have a major effect on the public's health. Recent studies have employed dynamic models to estimate the US cessation rate through observed smoking prevalence. However, none of those studies has provided annual estimates of the cessation rate by age group. Hence, the primary objective of this study is to estimate annual smoking cessation rates specific to different age groups in the US from 2009 to 2017. METHODS: We employed a Kalman filter approach to investigate the annual evolution of age-group-specific cessation rates, unknown parameters of a mathematical model of smoking prevalence, during the 2009-2017 period using data from the 2009-2018 National Health Interview Surveys. We focused on cessation rates in the 25-44, 45-64 and 65 + age groups. RESULTS: The findings show that cessation rates followed a consistent u-shaped curve over time with respect to age (i.e., higher among the 25-44 and 65 + age groups, and lower among 45-64-year-olds). Over the course of the study, the cessation rates in the 25-44 and 65 + age groups remained nearly unchanged around 4.5% and 5.6%, respectively. However, the rate in the 45-64 age group exhibited a substantial increase of 70%, from 2.5% to 2009 to 4.2% in 2017. The estimated cessation rates in all three age groups tended to converge to the weighted average cessation rate over time. CONCLUSIONS: The Kalman filter approach offers a real-time estimation of cessation rates that can be helpful for monitoring smoking cessation behavior.

BACKGROUND: Methylation of DAPK has been reported to play a key role in the initiation and progression of nasopharyngeal cancer. However, there are differences between the studies on it. This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the diagnostic value of DAPK promoter methylation for NPC. METHOD: The study method involves the systematic research of eligible studies based on criteria. The frequency, odds ratios (OR), sensitivity as well as specificity with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the effect sizes. RESULTS: A total of 13 studies, including 1048 NPC samples and 446 non-cancerous samples, were used for the meta-analysis. The overall frequencies of DAPK methylation were 56.94% and 9.28% in NPC samples and non-cancerous samples, respectively. The association between DAPK methylation and risk of NPC was also confirmed by calculating the OR value which was 13.13 (95%CI = 54.24-40.72) based on a random-effect model (Q = 64.74; p < 0.0001; I2 = 81.47% with 95%CI for I2 = 69.39-88.78). Additionally, the study results suggest that testing for DAPK methylation in tissue samples or brushing may provide a promising method for diagnosing NPC. CONCLUSION: This is the first meta-analysis that provided scientific evidence that methylation of the DAPK gene could serve as a potential biomarker for diagnosis, prognosis, and early screening of NPC patients.

Identifying determinants of smoking cessation is critical for developing optimal cessation treatments and interventions. Machine learning (ML) is becoming more prevalent for smoking cessation success prediction in treatment programs. However, only individuals with an intention to quit smoking cigarettes participate in such programs, which limits the generalizability of the results. This study applies data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH), a United States longitudinal nationally representative survey, to select primary determinants of smoking cessation and to train ML classification models for predicting smoking cessation among the general population. An analytical sample of 9,281 adult current established smokers from the PATH survey wave 1 was used to develop classification models to predict smoking cessation by wave 2. Random forest and gradient boosting machines were applied for variable selection, and the SHapley Additive explanation method was used to show the effect direction of the top-ranked variables. The final model predicted wave 2 smoking cessation for current established smokers in wave 1 with an accuracy of 72% in the test dataset. The validation results showed that a similar model could predict wave 3 smoking cessation of wave 2 smokers with an accuracy of 70%. Our analysis indicated that more past 30 days e-cigarette use at the time of quitting, fewer past 30 days cigarette use before quitting, ages older than 18 at smoking initiation, fewer years of smoking, poly tobacco past 30-days use before quitting, and higher BMI resulted in higher chances of cigarette cessation for adult smokers in the US.

This study aimed to improve the mechanical properties of a composite material consisting of waste leather fibers (LF) and nitrile rubber (NBR) by partially replacing LF with waste polyamide fibers (PA). A ternary recycled composite NBR/LF/PA was produced by a simple mixing method and vulcanized by compression molding. The mechanical properties and dynamic mechanical properties of the composite were investigated in detail. The results showed that the mechanical properties of NBR/LF/PA increased with an increase in the PA ratio. The highest tensile strength value of NBR/LF/PA was found to have increased about 1.26 times, that is from 12.9 MPa of LF50 to 16.3 MPa of LF25PA25. Additionally, the ternary composite demonstrated high hysteresis loss, which was confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The presence of PA formed a non-woven network that significantly enhanced the abrasion resistance of the composite compared to NBR/LF. The failure mechanism was also analyzed through the observation of the failure surface using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). These findings suggest that the utilization of both waste fiber products together is a sustainable approach to reducing fibrous waste while improving the qualities of recycled rubber composites.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking continues to pose a threat to public health. Identifying individual risk factors for smoking initiation is essential to further mitigate this epidemic. To the best of our knowledge, no study today has used machine learning (ML) techniques to automatically uncover informative predictors of smoking onset among adults using the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study. AIMS AND METHODS: In this work, we employed random forest paired with Recursive Feature Elimination to identify relevant PATH variables that predict smoking initiation among adults who have never smoked at baseline between two consecutive PATH waves. We included all potentially informative baseline variables in wave 1 (wave 4) to predict past 30-day smoking status in wave 2 (wave 5). Using the first and most recent pairs of PATH waves was found sufficient to identify the key risk factors of smoking initiation and test their robustness over time. The eXtreme Gradient Boosting method was employed to test the quality of these selected variables. RESULTS: As a result, classification models suggested about 60 informative PATH variables among many candidate variables in each baseline wave. With these selected predictors, the resulting models have a high discriminatory power with the area under the specificity-sensitivity curves of around 80%. We examined the chosen variables and discovered important features. Across the considered waves, two factors, (1) BMI, and (2) dental and oral health status, robustly appeared as important predictors of smoking initiation, besides other well-established predictors. CONCLUSIONS: Our work demonstrates that ML methods are useful to predict smoking initiation with high accuracy, identifying novel smoking initiation predictors, and to enhance our understanding of tobacco use behaviors. IMPLICATIONS: Understanding individual risk factors for smoking initiation is essential to prevent smoking initiation. With this methodology, a set of the most informative predictors of smoking onset in the PATH data were identified. Besides reconfirming well-known risk factors, the findings suggested additional predictors of smoking initiation that have been overlooked in previous work. More studies that focus on the newly discovered factors (BMI and dental and oral health status,) are needed to confirm their predictive power against the onset of smoking as well as determine the underlying mechanisms.

RESUMO

microRNAs are endogenous non-coding miRNAs, 19-25 nucleotides in length, that can be detected in the extracellular environment in stable forms, named circulating miRNAs (CIR-miRNAs). Since the first discovery of CIR-miRNAs, a large number of studies have demonstrated that the abnormal changes in its expression could be used to significantly distinguish nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) from healthy cells. We herein reviewed and highlighted recent advances in the study of CIR-miRNAs in NPC, which pointed out the main components serving as promising and effective biomarkers for NPC diagnosis and prognosis. Furthermore, brief descriptions of its origin and unique characteristics are provided.
