PURPOSE: Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) presents a major challenge in the treatment of late-stage, solid tumors, with traditional therapies limited by poor drug penetration. We evaluated a novel hyperthermic pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (HPIPAC) system using a human abdominal cavity model for its efficacy against AGS gastric cancer cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A model simulating the human abdominal cavity and AGS gastric cancer cell line cultured dishes were used to assess the efficacy of the HPIPAC system. Cell viability was measured to evaluate the impact of HPIPAC under 6 different conditions: heat alone, PIPAC with paclitaxel (PTX), PTX alone, normal saline (NS) alone, heat with NS, and HPIPAC with PTX. RESULTS: Results showed a significant reduction in cell viability with HPIPAC combined with PTX, indicating enhanced cytotoxic effects. Immediately after treatment, the average cell viability was 66.6%, which decreased to 49.2% after 48 hours and to a further 19.6% after 120 hours of incubation, demonstrating the sustained efficacy of the treatment. In contrast, control groups exhibited a recovery in cell viability; heat alone showed cell viability increasing from 90.8% to 94.4%, PIPAC with PTX from 82.7% to 89.7%, PTX only from 73.3% to 74.8%, NS only from 90.9% to 98.3%, and heat with NS from 74.4% to 84.7%. CONCLUSIONS: The HPIPAC system with PTX exhibits a promising approach in the treatment of PC in gastric cancer, significantly reducing cell viability. Despite certain limitations, this study highlights the system's potential to enhance treatment outcomes. Future efforts should focus on refining HPIPAC and validating its effectiveness in clinical settings.

Metastatic gastric cancer (GC) presents significant clinical challenges due to its poor prognosis and limited treatment options. To address this, we conducted a targeted protein biomarker discovery study to identify markers predictive of metastasis in advanced GC (AGC). Serum samples from 176 AGC patients (T stage 3 or higher) were analyzed using the Olink Proteomics Target panels. Patients were retrospectively categorized into nonmetastatic, metastatic, and recurrence groups, and differential protein expression was assessed. Machine learning and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) methods were applied to discover biomarkers and predict prognosis. Four proteins (MUC16, CAIX, 5'-NT, and CD8A) were significantly elevated in metastatic GC patients compared to the control group. Additionally, GSEA indicated that the response to interleukin-4 and hypoxia-related pathways were enriched in metastatic patients. Random forest classification and decision-tree modeling showed that MUC16 could be a predictive marker for metastasis in GC patients. Additionally, ELISA validation confirmed elevated MUC16 levels in metastatic patients. Notably, high MUC16 levels were independently associated with metastatic progression in T3 or higher GC. These findings suggest the potential of MUC16 as a clinically relevant biomarker for identifying GC patients at high risk of metastasis.

Ovomucin (OM), which has insoluble fractions is a viscous glycoprotein, found in egg albumin. Enzymatic hydrolysates of OM have water solubility and bioactive properties. This study investigated that the immunostimulatory effects of OM hydrolysates (OMHs) obtained by using various proteolytic enzymes (Alcalase®, bromelain, α-chymotrypsin, Neutrase®, pancreatin, papain, Protamax®, and trypsin) in RAW 264.7 cells. The results showed that OMH prepared with pancreatin (OMPA) produced the highest levels of nitrite oxide in RAW 264.7 cells, through upregulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase mRNA expression. The production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 were increased with the cytokines mRNA expression. The effect of OMPA on mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway was increased the phosphorylation of p38, c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase, and extracellular signal-regulated kinase in a concentration-dependent manner. Therefore, OMPA could be used as a potential immune-stimulating agent in the functional food industry.

Stroke is the number one cause of morbidity in the United States and number two cause of death worldwide. There is a critical unmet medical need for more effective treatments of ischemic stroke, and this need is increasing with the shift in demographics to an older population. Recently, several studies have reported the therapeutic potential of stem cell-derived exosomes as new candidates for cell-free treatment in stoke. This review focuses on the use of stem cell-derived exosomes as a potential treatment tool for stroke patients. Therapy using exosomes can have a clear clinical advantage over stem cell transplantation in terms of safety, cost, and convenience, as well as reducing bench-to-bed latency due to fewer regulatory milestones. In this review article, we focus on (1) the therapeutic potential of exosomes in stroke treatment, (2) the optimization process of upstream and downstream production, and (3) preclinical application in a stroke animal model. Finally, we discuss the limitations and challenges faced by exosome therapy in future clinical applications.

The human methyltransferase and transcriptional coactivator MLL4 and its paralog MLL3 are frequently mutated in cancer. MLL4 and MLL3 monomethylate histone H3K4 and contain a set of uncharacterized PHD fingers. Here, we report a novel function of the PHD2 and PHD3 (PHD2/3) fingers of MLL4 and MLL3 that bind to ASXL2, a component of the Polycomb repressive H2AK119 deubiquitinase (PR-DUB) complex. The structure of MLL4 PHD2/3 in complex with the MLL-binding helix (MBH) of ASXL2 and mutational analyses reveal the molecular mechanism which is conserved in homologous ASXL1 and ASXL3. The native interaction of the Trithorax MLL3/4 complexes with the PR-DUB complex in vivo depends solely on MBH of ASXL1/2, coupling the two histone modifying activities. ChIP-seq analysis in embryonic stem cells demonstrates that MBH of ASXL1/2 is required for the deubiquitinase BAP1 recruitment to MLL4-bound active enhancers. Our findings suggest an ASXL1/2-dependent functional link between the MLL3/4 and PR-DUB complexes.

Here, we investigated that the heat shock protein 47 (HSP47) plays a crucial role in the progression of gastric cancer (GC). We analyzed HSP47 gene expression in GC cell lines and patient tissues. The HSP47 mRNA and protein expression levels were significantly higher in GC cell lines and tumor tissues compared to normal gastric mucosa. Using siRNA to silence the expression of HSP47 in GC cells resulted in a significant reduction in their proliferation, wound healing, migration, and invasion capacities. Additionally, we also showed that the mRNA expression of matrix metallopeptidase-7 (MMP-7), a metastasis-promoting gene, was significantly reduced in HSP47 siRNA-transfected GC cells. We confirmed that the HSP47 promoter region was methylated in the SNU-216 GC cell line expressing low levels of HSP47 and in most non-cancerous gastric tissues. It means that the expression of HSP47 is regulated by epigenetic regulatory mechanisms. These findings suggest that targeting HSP47, potentially through its promoter methylation, could be a useful new therapeutic strategy for treating GC.

We present a promising method for producing amorphous drug particles using a nozzle-free ultrasonic nebulizer with polymers, specifically polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and Eudragit® S 100 (EUD). Model crystalline phase drugs-Empagliflozin, Furosemide, and Ilaprazole-are selected. This technique efficiently produces spherical polymer-drug composite particles and demonstrates enhanced stability against humidity and thermal conditions, compared to the drug-only amorphous particles. The composite particles exhibit improved water dissolution compared to the original crystalline drugs, indicating potential bioavailability enhancements. While there are challenges, including the need for continuous water supply for ultrasonic component cooling, dependency on the solubility of polymers and drugs in volatile organic solvents, and mildly elevated temperatures for solvent evaporation, our method offers significant advantages over traditional approaches. It provides a straightforward, flexible process adaptable to various drug-polymer combinations and consistently yields spherical amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) particles with a narrow size distribution. These attributes make our method a valuable advancement in pharmaceutical drug formulation and delivery.

In our previous study, we developed a triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtype classification that correlated with the TNBC molecular subclassification. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the predictor variables of this subtype classification on the whole slide and to validate the model's performance by using an external test set. We explored the characteristics of this subtype classification and investigated genomic alterations, including genomic scar signature scores. First, TNBC was classified into the luminal androgen receptor (LAR) and non-luminal androgen receptor (non-LAR) subtypes based on the AR Allred score (≥ 6 and < 6, respectively). Then, the non-LAR subtype was further classified into the lymphocyte-predominant (LP), lymphocyte-intermediate (LI), and lymphocyte-depleted (LD) groups based on stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) (< 20%, > 20% but < 60%, and ≥ 60%, respectively). This classification showed fair agreement with the molecular classification in the test set. The LAR subtype was characterized by a high rate of PIK3CA mutation, CD274 (encodes PD-L1) and PDCD1LG2 (encodes PD-L2) deletion, and a low homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) score. The non-LAR LD TIL group was characterized by a high frequency of NOTCH2 and MYC amplification and a high HRD score.

INTRODUCTION: Despite electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) being marketed as a safer alternative to combustible cigarettes, the effects of chronic e-cigarette use on vascular health remain uncertain. Our meta-analysis aimed to assess the health implications of chronic exclusive e-cigarette use on endothelial dysfunction, as measured by flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD). METHODS: PubMed, Embase and Scopus were searched for studies from 1 January 2004 to 31 March 2024. Four cross-sectional studies (n=769) were pooled using a random-effects model. The mean differences (MD) of FMD were reported by comparing exclusive e-cigarette use versus non-use; exclusive e-cigarette use versus combustible cigarette use; and combustible cigarette use versus non-use. RESULTS: A non-significant reduction in FMD in exclusive e-cigarette use compared to non-use was reported (MD of FMD: -1.47%; 95% CI: -3.96 - 1.02; I2= 84%). Similar MD of FMD in exclusive e-cigarette use and exclusive combustible cigarette use (vs non-use) suggested that both of these products might have comparable adverse influences on endothelial health. CONCLUSIONS: The limited availability of studies assessing the chronic impact of e-cigarette use restricted our ability to provide definitive findings. We emphasize the importance of additional research that explores the long-term impact of e-cigarette use on endothelial dysfunction, and identify key areas and give suggestions for further study.

The proto-oncogene MYC is frequently dysregulated in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and plays a critical role in disease progression. To improve the clinical outcomes of patients with DLBCL, the development of strategies to target MYC is crucial. The use of medicinal plants for developing anticancer drugs has garnered considerable attention owing to their diverse mechanisms of action. In this study, 100 plant extracts of flora from the Republic of Korea were screened to search for novel agents with anti-DLBCL effects. Among them, Ajania pacifica (Nakai) K. Bremer and Humphries extract (APKH) efficiently suppressed the survival of DLBCL cells, while showing minimal toxicity toward normal murine bone marrow cells. APKH suppressed the expression of anti-apoptotic BCL2 family members, causing an imbalance between the pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic BCL2 members. This disrupted mitochondrial membrane potential, cytochrome c release, and pro-caspase-3 activation and eventually led to DLBCL cell death. Importantly, MYC expression was markedly downregulated by APKH and ectopic expression of MYC in DLBCL cells abolished the pro-apoptotic effects of APKH. These results demonstrate that APKH exerts anti-DLBCL effects by inhibiting MYC expression. Moreover, when combined with doxorubicin, an essential component of the CHOP regimen (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone), APKH synergistically enhanced the therapeutic effect of doxorubicin. This indicates that APKH may overcome drug resistance, which is common in patients with refractory/relapsed DLBCL. To identify compounds with anti-DLBCL activities in APKH, the chemical profile analysis of APKH was performed using UPLC-QTOF/MSe analysis and assessed for its anticancer activity. Based on the UPLC-QTOF/MSe chemical profiling, it is conceivable that APKH may serve as a novel agent targeting MYC and sensitizing drug-resistant DLBCL cells to CHOP chemotherapy. Further studies to elucidate how the compounds in APKH exert tumor-suppressive role in DLBCL are warranted.

Remimazolam's rapid onset and offset make it an innovative sedative for use during regional anesthesia. However, its respiratory safety profile is not well understood. We compared the continuous infusion of remimazolam with commonly used sedatives, propofol and dexmedetomidine, after regional anesthesia. In this retrospective study, the incidence of apnea (>10 seconds) was assessed in patients who underwent orthopedic surgery under regional anesthesia and received moderate to deep sedation using continuous infusion of remimazolam (group R: 0.1 mg/kg in 2 minutes followed by 0.5 mg/kg/hr). The incidence was compared with that of propofol (group P: 2-3 µg/mL target-controlled infusion) and dexmedetomidine (group D: 1 µg/kg in 10 minutes followed by 0.4-1 µg/kg/hr). Propensity score weighted multivariable logistic regression model was utilized to determine the effects of the sedative agents on the incidence of apnea. A total of 634 (191, 278, and 165 in group R, P, and D) cases were included in the final analysis. The incidence of apnea was 63.9%, 67.3%, and 48.5% in group R, P, and D, respectively. The adjusted odds ratios for apnea were 2.33 (95% CI, 1.50 to 3.61) and 2.50 (95% CI, 1.63 to 3.85) in group R and P, compared to group D. The incidence of apnea in patients receiving moderate to deep sedation using continuous infusion of remimazolam with dosage suggested in the current study was over 60%. Therefore, careful titration and respiratory monitoring is warranted.

This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and likelihood of antibiotic-associated encephalopathy (AAE), comparing rates among the classes of antibiotics in monotherapy or in combination therapy. We also investigated the associations between the incidence of AAE and the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and electroencephalogram features. Consecutive admissions that used any kind of antibiotics to treat infectious diseases were identified from six hospitals. We classified antibiotics according to three distinct pathophysiologic mechanisms and clinical subtypes. We searched for the incidence of AAE as the primary outcome. A total of 97,433 admission cases among 56,038 patients was identified. Cases that received type 1 antibiotics had significantly more frequent AAE compared to those that received type 2 antibiotics (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 2.62; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.15-5.95; P = 0.021). Combined use of type 1 + 2 antibiotics was associated with a significantly higher incidence of AAE compared to the use of type 2 antibiotics alone (adjusted OR, 3.44; 95% CI 1.49-7.93; P = 0.004). Groups with GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 had significantly higher incidence rates of AAE compared to those with GFRs ≥ 90 mL/min/1.73 m2 among cases that received type 1 + 2 antibiotics. Detection of spike-and-wave or sharp-and-wave patterns on electroencephalogram was significantly more common in the combination therapy group. Combination use of antibiotics was associated with a higher incidence of AAE compared to monotherapy. The incidence of AAE significantly increased as renal function decreased, and epileptiform discharges were more likely to be detected in cases receiving combined antibiotics.

Human mixed lineage leukemia 4 (MLL4), also known as KMT2D, regulates cell type specific transcriptional programs through enhancer activation. Along with the catalytic methyltransferase domain, MLL4 contains seven less characterized plant homeodomain (PHD) fingers. Here, we report that the sixth PHD finger of MLL4 (MLL4PHD6) binds to the hydrophobic motif of ten-eleven translocation 3 (TET3), a dioxygenase that converts methylated cytosine into oxidized derivatives. The solution NMR structure of the TET3-MLL4PHD6 complex and binding assays show that, like histone H4 tail, TET3 occupies the hydrophobic site of MLL4PHD6, and that this interaction is conserved in the seventh PHD finger of homologous MLL3 (MLL3PHD7). Analysis of genomic localization of endogenous MLL4 and ectopically expressed TET3 in mouse embryonic stem cells reveals a high degree overlap on active enhancers and suggests a potential functional relationship of MLL4 and TET3.

The dense granule protein of Toxoplasma gondii, inhibitor of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (IST) is an inhibitor of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) transcriptional activity that binds to STAT1 and regulates the expression of inflammatory molecules in host cells. A sterile inflammatory liver injury in pathological acute liver failures occurs when excessive innate immune function, such as the massive release of IFN-γ and TNF-α, is activated without infection. In relation to inflammatory liver injury, we hypothesized that Toxoplasma gondii inhibitor of STAT1 transcription (TgIST) can inhibit the inflammatory response induced by activating the STAT1/IRF-1 mechanism in liver inflammation. This study used IFN-γ and TNF-α as inflammatory inducers at the cellular level of murine hepatocytes (Hepa-1c1c7) to determine whether TgIST inhibits the STAT1/IRF-1 axis. In stable cells transfected with TgIST, STAT1 expression decreased with a decrease in interferon regulatory factor (IRF)-1 levels. Furthermore, STAT1 inhibition of TgIST resulted in lower levels of NF-κB and COX2, as well as significantly lower levels of class II transactivator (CIITA), iNOS, and chemokines (CLXCL9/10/11). TgIST also significantly reduced the expression of hepatocyte proapoptotic markers (Caspase3/8/9, P53, and BAX), which are linked to sterile inflammatory liver injury. TgIST also reduced the expression of adhesion (ICAM-1 and VCAM-1) and infiltration markers of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) induced by hepatocyte and tissue damage. TgIST restored the cell apoptosis induced by IFN-γ/TNF-α stimulation. These results suggest that TgIST can inhibit STAT1-mediated inflammatory and apoptotic responses in hepatocytes stimulated with proinflammatory cytokines.

BACKGROUND: Molecular analysis of advanced tumors can increase tumor heterogeneity and selection bias. We developed a robust prognostic signature for gastric cancer by comparing RNA expression between very rare early gastric cancers invading only mucosal layer (mEGCs) with lymph node metastasis (Npos) and those without metastasis (Nneg). METHODS: Out of 1003 mEGCs, all Npos were matched to Nneg using propensity scores. Machine learning approach comparing Npos and Nneg was used to develop prognostic signature. The function and robustness of prognostic signature was validated using cell lines and external datasets. RESULTS: Extensive machine learning with cross-validation identified the prognostic classifier consisting of four overexpressed genes (HDAC5, NPM1, DTX3, and PPP3R1) and two downregulated genes (MED12 and TP53), and enabled us to develop the risk score predicting poor prognosis. Cell lines engineered to high-risk score showed increased invasion, migration, and resistance to 5-FU and Oxaliplatin but maintained sensitivity to an HDAC inhibitor. Mouse models after tail vein injection of cell lines with high-risk score revealed increased metastasis. In three external cohorts, our risk score was identified as the independent prognostic factor for overall and recurrence-free survival. CONCLUSION: The risk score from the 6-gene classifier can successfully predict the prognosis of gastric cancer.

Background and Objectives: This study addresses the challenge of bone regeneration in calvarial defects, exploring the efficacy of stem cell-based therapies and enamel matrix derivative (EMD) in tissue engineering. It assesses the regenerative potential of two- and three-dimensional cell constructs combined with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and EMD in rabbit calvarial defects. Materials and Methods: This research involved the use of bone-marrow-derived MSCs cultured in silicon elastomer-based concave microwells to form spheroids. White rabbits were grouped for different treatments, with Group 1 as control, Group 2 receiving only EMD, Group 3 getting EMD plus stem cells, and Group 4 being treated with EMD plus stem cell spheroids. Computed tomography (CT) and microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) imaging were used for structural assessment, while histological evaluations were conducted using hematoxylin and eosin, Masson's trichrome, and Picro-sirius red staining. Results: CT and micro-CT analyses revealed varying degrees of bone regeneration among the groups. Group 4, treated with three-dimensional MSC spheroids and EMD, showed the most significant improvement in bone regeneration. Histological analyses corroborated these findings, with Group 4 displaying enhanced bone formation and better collagen fiber organization. Conclusions: The study supported the biocompatibility and potential efficacy of three-dimensional MSC constructs combined with EMD in bone regeneration. Further investigations are needed to confirm these findings and optimize treatment protocols.

Kimchi is a traditional fermented food that contains abundant nutrients and functional ingredients with various health benefits. We previously reported that kimchi active components suppress hepatic steatosis caused by endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, we assessed the effect of kimchi on the inhibition of hepatic steatosis caused by ER stress in HepG2 cells and C57BL/6N mice to verify the hypothesis that kimchi may potentially inhibit nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. We investigated the effect of kimchi on cell viability and triglyceride concentrations in cells and on lipid profile, lipid accumulation, and expression of related genes in cells and mice with hepatic steatosis. A mechanistic study was also performed using the liver X receptor α agonist T0901317 and the AMP-activated protein kinase agonist AICAR. Kimchi was noncytotoxic and effectively reduced triglyceride concentrations and suppressed hepatic steatosis-related gene expression in cells and mice. Additionally, kimchi recovered weight loss, lowered the serum and liver tissue lipid profiles, suppressed lipid accumulation, and reduced the effects of T0901317 and AICAR on lipogenic gene expression in tunicamycin-treated mice. Our results highlight that kimchi could prevent hepatic steatosis caused by ER stress in cells and mice.

Photon-controlled pyroptosis activation (PhotoPyro) is a promising technique for cancer immunotherapy due to its noninvasive nature, precise control, and ease of operation. Here, we report that biomolecular photoredox catalysis in cells might be an important mechanism underlying PhotoPyro. Our findings reveal that the photocatalyst lutetium texaphyrin (MLu) facilitates rapid and direct photoredox oxidation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, and various amino acids, thereby triggering pyroptosis through the caspase 3/GSDME pathway. This mechanism is distinct from the well-established role of MLu as a photodynamic therapy sensitizer in cells. Two analogs of MLu, bearing different coordinated central metal cations, were also explored as controls. The first control, gadolinium texaphyrin (MGd), is a weak photocatalyst but generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) efficiently. The second control, manganese texaphyrin (MMn), is ineffective as both a photocatalyst and a ROS generator. Neither MGd nor MMn was found to trigger pyroptosis under the conditions where MLu was active. Even in the presence of a ROS scavenger, treating MDA-MB-231 cells with MLu at concentrations as low as 50 nM still allows for pyroptosis photo-activation. The present findings highlight how biomolecular photoredox catalysis could contribute to pyroptosis activation by mechanisms largely independent of ROS.

C-terminal binding protein 1 (CtBP1) is a critical transcriptional corepressor of many tumor suppressor genes and plays diverse roles in the progression of cancers. The transcriptional repression function of CtBP1 is mediated by recruiting histone-modifying enzymes, such as histone deacetylases and histone methyltransferases, to target genes by binding with DNA-interacting factors. Several post-translational modifications of CtBP1 have been identified, including ubiquitination, phosphorylation, and SUMOylation. This paper reports that CtBP1 is conjugated by ISG15. Endogenous CtBP1 was modified by ISG15 after interferon-α treatment in HeLa cells. The ISGylation process of CtBP1 was regulated by deISGylation enzyme USP18 and ISG15 E3 ligase EFP. Interestingly, CtBP1 ISGylation affected the binding affinity between CtBP1 and some components of CtBP1-associated transcriptional complexes. HDAC1 and LSD1 bound more efficiently to ISG15-conjugated CtBP1 than non-conjugated CtBP1. On the other hand, binding between CtBP1 and HDAC4 was unaffected by ISG15 modification. Furthermore, ISG15 modification enhanced the transcriptional repression activity of CtBP1 on several target genes related to EMT and apoptosis. These findings suggest that the ISG15 modification of CtBP1 modulates the function and activity of CtBP1 and that CtBP1 ISGylation may provide a new insight for CtBP1-mediated cancers.

BACKGROUND: Consistent uptake of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is important to reduce the incidence and mortality from advanced-stage CRC and increase the survival rate of the patients. We conducted a longitudinal study to determine the factors affecting CRC screening compliance in Korean adults using individual-level linked data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, Korean National Health Insurance Service, and Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. METHODS: We selected 3,464 adults aged 50-79 years as the study population and followed them for 12 years (January 2007-December 2018). The outcome variable was the level of adherence to CRC screening, categorized as nonadherent, intermittently adherent, and consistently adherent. An ordinal logistic regression model was designed to determine the socioeconomic factors, family history of CRC, and medical conditions that could facilitate the consistent uptake of CRC screening. RESULTS: The results showed a significant and positive association between consistent uptake of CRC screening and the 100-150% income category (odds ratio [OR], 1.710; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.401-2.088); clerical, sales and service job category (OR, 1.962; 95% CI, 1.582-2.433); residency at medium-sized cities (OR, 1.295; 95% CI, 1.094-1.532); high-school graduation (OR, 1.440; 95% CI, 1.210-1.713); married status (OR, 2.281; 95% CI, 1.946-2.674); use of employment-based national health insurance (OR, 1.820; 95% CI, 1.261-2.626); use of private insurance (OR, 2.259; 95% CI, 1.970-2.589); no disability (OR, 1.428; 95% CI, 1.175-1.737); family history of CRC (OR, 2.027; 95% CI, 1.514-2.714); and history of colorectal neoplasm (OR, 1.216; 95% CI; 1.039-1.422). CONCLUSION: The lack of regular participation in CRC screening programs in the Republic of Korea was found to be an issue that requires attention. Policies on CRC screening must place increased emphasis on strengthening educational and public relations initiatives.
