RESUMO

Functional mapping during brain surgery is applied to define brain areas that control critical functions and cannot be removed. Currently, these procedures rely on verbal interactions between the neurosurgeon and electrophysiologist, which can be time-consuming. In addition, the electrode grids that are used to measure brain activity and to identify the boundaries of pathological versus functional brain regions have low resolution and limited conformity to the brain surface. Here, we present the development of an intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG)-microdisplay that consists of freestanding arrays of 2048 GaN light-emitting diodes laminated on the back of micro-electrocorticography electrode grids. With a series of proof-of-concept experiments in rats and pigs, we demonstrate that these iEEG-microdisplays allowed us to perform real-time iEEG recordings and display cortical activities by spatially corresponding light patterns on the surface of the brain in the surgical field. Furthermore, iEEG-microdisplays allowed us to identify and display cortical landmarks and pathological activities from rat and pig models. Using a dual-color iEEG-microdisplay, we demonstrated coregistration of the functional cortical boundaries with one color and displayed the evolution of electrical potentials associated with epileptiform activity with another color. The iEEG-microdisplay holds promise to facilitate monitoring of pathological brain activity in clinical settings.

OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to evaluate intraoperative experience with newly developed high-spatial-resolution microelectrode grids composed of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) with polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), and those composed of platinum nanorods (PtNRs). METHODS: A cohort of patients who underwent craniotomy for pathological tissue resection and who had high-spatial-resolution microelectrode grids placed intraoperatively were evaluated. Patient demographic and baseline clinical variables as well as relevant microelectrode grid characteristic data were collected. The primary and secondary outcome measures of interest were successful microelectrode grid utilization with usable resting-state or task-related data, and grid-related adverse intraoperative events and/or grid dysfunction. RESULTS: Included in the analysis were 89 cases of patients who underwent a craniotomy for resection of neoplasms (n = 58) or epileptogenic tissue (n = 31). These cases accounted for 94 grids: 58 PEDOT:PSS and 36 PtNR grids. Of these 94 grids, 86 were functional and used successfully to obtain cortical recordings from 82 patients. The mean cortical grid recording duration was 15.3 ± 1.15 minutes. Most recordings in patients were obtained during experimental tasks (n = 52, 58.4%), involving language and sensorimotor testing paradigms, or were obtained passively during resting state (n = 32, 36.0%). There were no intraoperative adverse events related to grid placement. However, there were instances of PtNR grid dysfunction (n = 8) related to damage incurred by suboptimal preoperative sterilization (n = 7) and improper handling (n = 1); intraoperative recordings were not performed. Vaporized peroxide sterilization was the most optimal sterilization method for PtNR grids, providing a significantly greater number of usable channels poststerilization than did steam-based sterilization techniques (median 905.0 [IQR 650.8-935.5] vs 356.0 [IQR 18.0-597.8], p = 0.0031). CONCLUSIONS: High-spatial-resolution microelectrode grids can be readily incorporated into appropriately selected craniotomy cases for clinical and research purposes. Grids are reliable when preoperative handling and sterilization considerations are accounted for. Future investigations should compare the diagnostic utility of these high-resolution grids to commercially available counterparts and assess whether diagnostic discrepancies relate to clinical outcomes.

Petroleum coke, commonly known as pet-coke, represents a promising and cost-effective alternative fuel source, produced as a byproduct of large-scale heavy crude oil refining. This study first simulated the gasification process of pet-coke slurry using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The simulation was carried out in a 2-ton-per-day (2TPD) entrained-flow gasifier, aiming to optimize the production of hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO) as synthetic gases. This study investigated the effects of operational parameters, including the oxygen/slurry ratio and moisture content in the slurry, on various aspects such as fluid dynamics, temperature distribution, particle trajectories, carbon conversion, and gas composition within the pet-coke slurry gasifier. The base conditions of the simulation were meticulously cross-validated with high-precision experimental data. The results indicated that higher oxygen/slurry ratios led to increased concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) and decreased fractions of H2, primarily due to the prevalence of the reverse water-gas shift reaction. Moreover, raising the moisture content in the pet-coke slurry led to decreased CO levels and enhanced production of H2 and CO2, triggered by the activation of the forward water-gas shift reaction. These results underscore the potential of pet-coke slurry as a favorable feedstock for syngas production and the achievement of carbon neutrality through the careful optimization of operational conditions. Our findings provide valuable insights for further experimental exploration and the development of practical applications for pet-coke gasification.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the graft maturation and safety of single-incision bone bridge lateral meniscus allograft transplantation (LMAT). METHODS: This study involved 35 patients who underwent LMAT between 2019 and 2020. All patients completed at least 2 years of follow-up (median 34 months; range 24-43) and underwent preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the trajectory safety of the leading suture passer and all-inside suture instrument (Fast-Fix). Graft status was evaluated according to the Stoller classification. RESULTS: Based on preoperative MRI measurements, the expected trajectory of the leading suture passer did not transect the common peroneal nerve (CPN), with the closest distance between the expected trajectory and CPN being 1.4 mm and the average distance being 6.8 ± 3.2 mm. The average distance from the lateral meniscal posterior horn (LMPH) to the popliteal neurovascular bundle (PNVB) was 7.4 ± 2.6 mm and the nearest was 4.8 mm. The expected trajectory of the all-inside suturing instrument did not transect the PNVB when the distance was at least 12 mm, from the most lateral margin of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). Grade 3 signal intensity in the posterior third of the allograft on MRI was observed in 6 of 35 (17.1%) patients. Amongst the grade 3 signal intensities in the posterior one-third of the allografts, 3 of the 35 (8.5%) LMATs had a distorted contour. CONCLUSION: The single-incision bone bridge LMAT technique introduced in this study is a convenient approach that preserves neurovascular safety and provides good results for the distortion of the posterior horn of the allograft and graft maturation. The safety zone for the penetrating devices during the procedure extended from 12 mm laterally to the most lateral margin of the PCL to the medial margin of the popliteal hiatus. In order to make piglet diets more effective, it is necessary to investigate effective methods for breaking down xylan in cereal. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of dietary stimbiotic (STB) supplementation on growth performance, intestinal morphology, immune response and intestinal microbiota in weaned piglets. A total of 24 (Duroc × Yorkshire × Landrace) weaned pigs (initial body weight of 8.01 ± 0.38 kg and 28 ± 3 d old), were assigned to 4 treatments with 6 replicates per treatment. Pigs were housed in individual pens for 17 days, including 5 days adaption period and 12 days after the first Escherichia coli (E. coli) challenge. The experiment was conducted in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments consisting of two levels of challenge (challenge and non-challenge) and two levels of STB (0 and 0.5 g/kg diet). Supplementations of STB 0.5 g/kg improved the gain to feed ratio (G:F) (P < 0.05) in piglets challenged with shiga toxigenic E. coli (STEC). STB supplementation decreased (P < 0.05) white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6. Supplementation of STB improved (P < 0.05) the lymphocytes and neutrophils in piglets challenged with STEC on 12 dpi. Supplementation of STB also improved (P < 0.05) the villus height to-crypt depth ratio of ileum in piglets challenged with STEC. Supplementation of STB increased (P < 0.05) the expression levels of claudin-1 of ileum. In genus level, supplementation of STB increased (P < 0.001) the abundance of Prevotella compared to non-supplementation of STB groups in pre-inoculation period. Also, supplementation of STB decreased (P < 0.05) the abundance of Faecalibacterium and Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group compared to non-supplementation of STB groups in post-inoculation period. In phylum level, supplementation of STB increased (P < 0.05) the abundance of Desulfobacterota and Fibrobacterota in pre-inoculation period. E. coli challenge increased the abundance of Fibrobacterota compared to non-challenged group in post-inoculation period. In conclusion, these findings indicated that STB supplementation could alleviate a decrease of the performance, immune response, and inflammatory response in piglets induced by the STEC challenge.

Brain surgeries are among the most delicate clinical procedures and must be performed with the most technologically robust and advanced tools. When such surgical procedures are performed in functionally critical regions of the brain, functional mapping is applied as a standard practice that involves direct coordinated interactions between the neurosurgeon and the clinical neurology electrophysiology team. However, information flow during these interactions is commonly verbal as well as time consuming which in turn increases the duration and cost of the surgery, possibly compromising the patient outcomes. Additionally, the grids that measure brain activity and identify the boundaries of pathological versus functional brain regions suffer from low resolution (3-10 mm contact to contact spacing) with limited conformity to the brain surface. Here, we introduce a brain intracranial electroencephalogram microdisplay (Brain-iEEG-microdisplay) which conforms to the brain to measure the brain activity and display changes in near real-time (40 Hz refresh rate) on the surface of the brain in the surgical field. We used scalable engineered gallium nitride (GaN) substrates with 6" diameter to fabricate, encapsulate, and release free-standing arrays of up to 2048 GaN light emitting diodes (µLEDs) in polyimide substrates. We then laminated the µLED arrays on the back of micro-electrocorticography (µECoG) platinum nanorod grids (PtNRGrids) and developed hardware and software to perform near real-time intracranial EEG analysis and activation of light patterns that correspond to specific cortical activities. Using the Brain-iEEG-microdisplay, we precisely ideFSntified and displayed important cortical landmarks and pharmacologically induced pathological activities. In the rat model, we identified and displayed individual cortical columns corresponding to individual whiskers and the near real-time evolution of epileptic discharges. In the pig animal model, we demonstrated near real-time mapping and display of cortical functional boundaries using somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) and display of responses to direct electrical stimulation (DES) from the surface or within the brain tissue. Using a dual-color Brain-iEEG-microdisplay, we demonstrated co-registration of the functional cortical boundaries with one color and displayed the evolution of electrical potentials associated with epileptiform activity with another color. The Brain-iEEG-microdisplay holds the promise of increasing the efficiency of diagnosis and possibly surgical treatment, thereby reducing the cost and improving patient outcomes which would mark a major advancement in neurosurgery. These advances can also be translated to broader applications in neuro-oncology and neurophysiology.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the clinical results of revision Bankart repair versus the Latarjet procedure for failed Bankart repair. METHODS: A literature search was performed in databases, such as Pubmed, Embase, and Scopus Library. The studies were appraised using the Methodological Index for Non-randomized Studies tool. Studies for failed Bankart repair with revision Bankart repair or Latarjet procedure were included. The pain VAS, ROWE score, rate of return to sports and preinjury level of sports, recurrent instability, range of motion, and complications were compared. Additionally, the pain VAS, ROWE score, forward flexion, and external rotation at side were subjected to a meta-analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-four articles were included in the systematic review. The functional outcomes in terms of the ROWE score, recurrent instability, return to sports, and the preinjury level of sports was better in the Latarjet procedure group than those in the revision Bankart repair group (ROWE score, 91 vs. 86.7; recurrent instability rate, 3.5% vs. 14.4%; return to sports rate, 100% vs. 87.9%; return to preinjury level of sports rate, 89.9% vs. 74.9%; all P < 0.001). However, the results of postoperative pain and the postoperative limitation of external rotation at side were worse in the Latarjet procedure group than those in the revision Bankart repair group (pain VAS, 1.4 vs. 0.8; postoperative external rotation at side, 38° vs. 60°; all P < 0.001). In addition, the majority of the complications occurred in the Latarjet procedure group. In the meta-analysis, the postoperative ROWE score was significantly higher in the Latarjet procedure group than that in the revision Bankart group (revision Bankart repair: 95% CI 88.9-80.9, I2 = 65.70; Latarjet procedure: 95% CI 95.8-88.1, I2 = 93.37; P = 0.014). However, the pain VAS, forward flexion, and external rotation at side did not reach the significant level in the meta-analysis. CONCLUSION: Compared with revision Bankart repair, the Latarjet procedure for failed Bankart repair showed better ROWE scores, stability, and return to sports or preinjury level of sports; however, the postoperative pain and the limitation of external rotation at side were worse with more complications. AIMS: Diabetes is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), but little is known about the differences in contribution of diabetes to incident CVD between adult cancer survivors and those without history of cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the magnitude of association between diabetes and CVD risk among adult cancer survivors and their general population counterparts. METHODS AND RESULTS: The National Health Insurance Service database was used to abstract data on 5199 adult cancer survivors and their general population controls in a 1:1 age- and sex-matched cohort setting. The Cox proportional hazards model adjusted for socioeconomic status, health status, lifestyle, and clinical characteristics was used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of incident CVD associated with glycaemic status in adult cancer survivors and the general population. The partial likelihood ratio test was used to compare the magnitude of the association between diabetes and CVD risk in the two groups. Compared to those without diabetes, adult cancer survivors (adjusted HR = 2.30; 95% CI: 1.24-4.30) and their general population controls (adjusted HR = 1.91; 95% CI: 1.02-3.58) with diabetes had a higher risk of incident cardiovascular outcomes. The magnitude of diabetes-CVD association was significantly stronger in adult cancer survivors than that in those without history of cancer (P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: The magnitude of association between diabetes and incident CVD was stronger in adult cancer survivors as compared to that in their general population counterparts, supporting evidence for the importance of glycaemic control for prevention of CVD among those with history of cancer diagnosis and treatment.


In a matched cohort of adult cancer survivors and the general population, diabetes was associated with a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular disease in adult cancer survivors compared to that in the general population.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prognostic impact of fat loss after immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment in patients with metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Data from 60 patients treated with ICI therapy for metastatic ccRCC were retrospectively analyzed. Changes in cross-sectional areas of subcutaneous fat (SF) between the pre-treatment and post-treatment abdominal computed tomography (CT) images were expressed as percentages and were divided by the interval between the CT scans to calculate ΔSF (%/month). SF loss was defined as ΔSF < -5%/month. Survival analyses for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were performed. Patients with SF loss had shorter OS (median, 9.5 months vs. not reached; p < 0.001) and PFS (median, 2.6 months vs. 33.5 months; p < 0.001) than patients without SF loss. ΔSF was independently associated with OS (adjusted hazard ratio (HR), 1.49; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.07-2.07; p = 0.020) and PFS (adjusted HR, 1.57; 95% CI, 1.17-2.12; p = 0.003), with a 5%/month decrease in SF increasing the risk of death and progression by 49% and 57%, respectively. In conclusion, Loss of SF after treatment initiation is a significant and independent poor prognostic factor for OS and PFS in patients with metastatic ccRCC who receive ICI therapy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of arthroscopic superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) using hybrid grafts composed of tensor fascia lata autografts and human dermal allografts. METHODS: This study included 30 patients with chronic irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears (RCTs) who underwent arthroscopic SCR using a hybrid graft composed of tensor fascia lata autograft and human dermal allograft. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the pain visual analogue scale score, shoulder range of motion, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, constant score, University of California-Los Angeles score, and simple shoulder test score preoperatively and at least 2 years after surgery. Radiographic analysis included the Hamada classification grade, acromiohumeral distance (AHD), and graft integrity at 2 years after surgery. RESULTS: All patients exhibited significant clinical improvement in all functional outcome measurements, except external rotation (all P < 0.05). The number of patients who exhibited pseudoparalysis decreased from 7 (23.3%) to 2 (6.7%) postoperatively. Complications were not observed. Radiologically, the mean postoperative AHD increased significantly from 6.9 ± 1.6 cm to 8.8 ± 2.1 cm at 2 years postoperatively (P < 0.001). Twenty five out of the 30 (83.3%) patients showed successful graft healing, and all healing failures occurred on the humeral side. The differences between the healed-graft and failed-graft groups were significantly lower graft thickness (P = 0.001) and smaller AHD (P < 0.001) in the failed-graft group. Every functional outcome scores were not statistically different between healed-graft and failed-graft groups. CONCLUSIONS: An arthroscopic SCR technique using a hybrid graft consisting of a tensor fascia lata autograft and human dermal allograft showed satisfactory clinical outcomes in patients with irreparable RCTs. Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) affects 64-75% of eyes with punctate inner choroidopathy (PIC). Although anti-VEGF agents are considered first-line therapy, there is controversy regarding other modalities, such as immunosuppression. We performed a systematic review of individual participant data (IPD) and generated a dataset of 278 eyes with PIC-related CNV from 45 studies. Forty-two percent presented with moderate visual loss (MVL) or worse. Four different treatment modalities (anti-VEGF, photodynamic therapy, local immunosuppression, and systemic immunosuppression) and most combinations among them were represented. Anti-VEGF injections decreased the likelihood of MVL (Odds Ratio 0.3, p = .027), an effect moderated by presenting visual acuity and patient age. Eyes receiving more than 3 injections were more likely to receive additional therapeutic modalities. Increasing number of modalities was associated with longer follow-up time and did not improve vision. The beneficial effect of anti-VEGF injections persisted when controlling for presenting visual acuity and follow-up time.

Background: In large-sized rotator cuff tears, tendon repair with incomplete footprint coverage is performed frequently as a way of tension-free or low-tension repair. Purpose: To compare clinical outcomes after arthroscopic repair of large-sized rotator cuff tears between patients with complete versus incomplete footprint coverage. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Among 297 patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery for a large-sized rotator cuff tear, we selected 58 patients (<50% coverage; mean age, 63.34 ± 6.8 years; 34 men and 24 women) with incomplete footprint coverage. Using propensity score matching, another 58 patients with complete footprint coverage (mean age, 63.4 ± 8.03 years; 34 men and 24 women) were selected after 1:1 matching for age, sex, and tear size-the main demographic and prognostic factors of outcomes after rotator cuff repair. Clinical outcomes were compared on magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasonography at minimum of 6 months postoperatively, and functional outcomes were compared using range of motion and pain visual analog scale; American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons; Constant; University of California, Los Angeles; and Simple Shoulder Test scores at a minimum of 2 years postoperatively. Results: A total of 18 patients in the incomplete footprint coverage group (31.0%) and 20 patients in the complete footprint coverage group (34.5%) showed healing failure, with no significant difference between groups (P = .843). In addition, there were no differences in functional outcomes between groups (P > .05 for all). Conclusion: Whether the rotator cuff footprint was completely covered did not affect clinical outcomes in conventional arthroscopic repair of large-sized rotator cuff tears.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of stimbiotic (STB), a xylanase and xylo-oligosaccharide complex. A total of 36 male weaned pigs with initial body weights of 8.49 ± 0.10 kg were used in a 3-week experiment. The experiment was conducted in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement (six replicates/treatment) of treatments consisting of two levels of challenge (challenge and non-challenge) and three levels of STB (0, 0.5, and 1 g/kg diet). Supplementations STB 0.5 g/kg (STB5) and STB 1 g/kg (STB10) improved the G:F (p = 0.04) in piglets challenged with STEC. STB supplementation, which also decreased (p < 0.05) the white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6. Supplementations STB5 and STB10 improved (p < 0.01) the lymphocytes and neutrophils in piglets challenged with STEC on 14 dpi. Additionally, supplementations STB5 and STB10 improved (p < 0.01) the tumor necrosis factor-alpha in piglets challenged with STEC on 3 dpi. Supplementations STB5 and STB10 also improved the villus height-to-crypt depth ratio (p < 0.01) in piglets challenged with STEC. Supplementation with STB reduced (p < 0.05) the expression levels of calprotectin. In conclusion, STB could alleviate a decrease of the performance, immune response, and inflammatory response induced by the STEC challenge.

Although oxaliplatin is a well-known anti-cancer agent used for the treatment of colorectal cancer, treated patients often experience acute cold and mechanical allodynia as side effects. Unfortunately, no optimal treatment has been developed yet. In this study, [6]-shogaol (10 mg/kg, i.p.), which is one of the major bioactive components of Zingiber officinale roscoe (Z. officinale), significantly alleviated allodynia induced by oxaliplatin (6 mg/kg, i.p.) injection. Cold and mechanical allodynia were assessed by acetone drop and von Frey filament tests, respectively. The analgesic effect of [6]-shogaol was blocked by the intrathecal injection of 5-HT1A, 5-HT3, and GABAB receptor antagonists, NAN-190 (1 µg), MDL-72222 (15 µg), and CGP 55845 (10 µg), respectively. Furthermore, oxaliplatin injection lowered the GABA concentration in the superficial laminae of the spinal dorsal horn, whereas [6]-shogaol injection significantly elevated it. The GAD (glutamic acid decarboxylase) 65 concentration also increased after [6]-shogaol administration. However, pre-treatment of NAN-190 completely inhibited the increased GABA induced by [6]-shogaol in the spinal dorsal horn, whereas MDL-72222 partially blocked the effect. Altogether, these results suggest that [6]-shogaol could attenuate oxaliplatin-induced cold and mechanical allodynia through 5-HT1A and 5-HT3 receptor antagonists located in the GABAergic neurons in the spinal dorsal horn in mice.

Electrophysiological devices are critical for mapping eloquent and diseased brain regions and for therapeutic neuromodulation in clinical settings and are extensively used for research in brain-machine interfaces. However, the existing clinical and experimental devices are often limited in either spatial resolution or cortical coverage. Here, we developed scalable manufacturing processes with a dense electrical connection scheme to achieve reconfigurable thin-film, multithousand-channel neurophysiological recording grids using platinum nanorods (PtNRGrids). With PtNRGrids, we have achieved a multithousand-channel array of small (30 µm) contacts with low impedance, providing high spatial and temporal resolution over a large cortical area. We demonstrated that PtNRGrids can resolve submillimeter functional organization of the barrel cortex in anesthetized rats that captured the tissue structure. In the clinical setting, PtNRGrids resolved fine, complex temporal dynamics from the cortical surface in an awake human patient performing grasping tasks. In addition, the PtNRGrids identified the spatial spread and dynamics of epileptic discharges in a patient undergoing epilepsy surgery at 1-mm spatial resolution, including activity induced by direct electrical stimulation. Collectively, these findings demonstrated the power of the PtNRGrids to transform clinical mapping and research with brain-machine interfaces.

People who are engineering biological organisms often find it useful to communicate in diagrams, both about the structure of the nucleic acid sequences that they are engineering and about the functional relationships between sequence features and other molecular species. Some typical practices and conventions have begun to emerge for such diagrams. The Synthetic Biology Open Language Visual (SBOL Visual) has been developed as a standard for organizing and systematizing such conventions in order to produce a coherent language for expressing the structure and function of genetic designs. This document details version 2.3 of SBOL Visual, which builds on the prior SBOL Visual 2.2 in several ways. First, the specification now includes higher-level "interactions with interactions," such as an inducer molecule stimulating a repression interaction. Second, binding with a nucleic acid backbone can be shown by overlapping glyphs, as with other molecular complexes. Finally, a new "unspecified interaction" glyph is added for visualizing interactions whose nature is unknown, the "insulator" glyph is deprecated in favor of a new "inert DNA spacer" glyph, and the polypeptide region glyph is recommended for showing 2A sequences.

Here, a highly selective solid-state nanocrystal conversion strategy is developed toward concave iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanocube with an open-mouthed cavity engraved exclusively on a single face. The strategy is based on a novel heat-induced nanospace-confined domino-type migration of Fe2+ ions from the SiO2-Fe3O4 interface toward the surrounding silica shell and concomitant self-limiting nanoscale phase-transition to the Fe-silicate form. Equipped with the chemically unique cavity, the produced Janus-type concave iron oxide nanocube was further functionalized with controllable density of catalytic Pt-nanocrystals exclusively on concave sites and utilized as a highly diffusive catalytic Janus nanoswimmer for the efficient degradation of pollutant-dyes in water.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical findings and surgical outcomes of lamellar macular holes (LMHs) with and without lamellar hole-associated epiretinal proliferation (LHEP). METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 73 eyes of 73 patients who underwent vitrectomy for LMH. Patients were grouped according to the presence of LHEP on preoperative spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and OCT features were compared between LMH patients with and without LHEP. RESULTS: Lamellar hole-associated epiretinal proliferation (LHEP) was found in 15 of 73 eyes with LMHs (20.5%). The mean age was 65.0 years. The mean follow-up duration was 21.5 months. Preoperatively, eyes with LHEP were characterized by a greater hole diameter (p = 0.007), thinner fovea (p = 0.002) and greater incidence of outer retinal disruption (p < 0.001). Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) significantly improved after surgery in eyes without LHEP (p < 0.001), but showed no change in eyes with LHEP (p = 0.185). Initial BCVA was not different between the two groups; however, final BCVA was better in eyes without LHEP (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) BCVA, 0.10 ± 0.10 versus 0.33 ± 0.40, p = 0.003). OCT evaluations of postoperative foveal configurations showed no difference between the two groups (p = 0.171). No case developed a full-thickness macular hole after surgery. CONCLUSION: There was no visual benefit after surgery in LMH patients with LHEP. Different surgical indications for LMHs may be warranted based on the presence of LHEP-associated pathology.

Activation of spinal glial cells plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of neuropathic pain. An administration of oxaliplatin, an important anticancer drug, often induces acute neuropathic cold hypersensitivity and/or mechanical hypersensitivity in patients. Gyejigachulbu-tang (GBT), a herbal formula comprising Cinnamomi Cortex, Paeoniae Radix, Atractylodis Lanceae Rhizoma, Zizyphi Fructus, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Zingiberis Rhizoma, and Aconiti Tuber, has been used in East Asia to treat various pain symptoms, especially in cold patients. This study investigated whether and how GBT alleviates oxaliplatin-induced cold and mechanical hypersensitivity in rats. The behavioral signs of cold and mechanical hypersensitivity were evaluated by a tail immersion test in cold water (4°C) and a von Frey hair test, respectively. The significant cold and mechanical hypersensitivity were observed 3 days after an oxaliplatin injection (6 mg/kg, i.p.). Daily oral administration of GBT (200, 400, and 600 mg/kg) for 5 days markedly attenuated cold and mechanical hypersensitivity. Immunoreactivities of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP, astrocyte marker) and OX-42 (microglia marker) in the spinal dorsal horn were significantly increased by an oxaliplatin injection, which were restored by GBT administration. These results indicate that GBT relieves oxaliplatin-induced cold and mechanical hypersensitivity in rats possibly through the suppression of spinal glial activation.

The thermal fluctuation and elasticity of dioleoyl-phosphocholine large unilamellar vesicle interacting with pore-forming peptide, melittin, were investigated by neutron spin-echo measurements. The relaxation behavior of the membrane fluctuation with different peptide to lipid molar ratio P/L can be divided into three regions, resulting from characteristic changes of the effective bending modulus κ(˜) of the membrane which includes the effects of internal dissipation within the membrane. At low P/L, melittin is adsorbed parallel to the surface of membrane and κ(˜) decreases significantly due to perturbation of hydrocarbon chain packing. At a critical P/L, melittin forms pores in the membrane and κ(˜) starts to increase slightly due to high pore rigidity. At higher P/L where the repulsive interpore interaction becomes significant, κ(˜) increases rapidly.
