RESUMO

PURPOSE: Total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) is an effective treatment for patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP) when other interventions are unsuccessful. CP has many etiologies including heredity. Metabolic and pain relief outcomes after TPIAT are presented among patients with a genetic CP etiology compared with those with a nongenetic etiology in a large cohort of patients who underwent this procedure at our center. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of 237 patients undergoing TPIAT between 2006 and 2023. We analyzed the differences in patients with genetic (n = 56) vs nongenetic CP etiologies (n = 181) in terms of pre-TPIAT factors including patient characteristics and disease state, results from the isolation process, and outcomes such as long-term glycemic and pain control. RESULTS: Patients with genetic CP underwent TPIAT at a significantly younger age (32.3 vs 41.3 years nongenetic; P < .0001) and endured symptoms for a significantly longer period (10 vs 6 years; P < .01). A significantly lower mass of islets was isolated from patients with genetic CP (P < .01), which increased with body mass index in both groups. Despite lower yields, patients with genetic CP maintained metabolic function similar to patients with nongenetic CP, as indicated by insulin independence and C-peptide, blood glucose, and hemoglobin A1C levels after TPIAT. Post-transplant narcotic usage and pain scores significantly decreased compared with those before TPIAT, and more patients with genetic CP were pain free and narcotic free after TPIAT. CONCLUSION: Our data validate TPIAT as a beneficial procedure for patients enduring CP of genetic etiology. Pain that is inevitably recurrent after minor interventions owing to the nature of the disease and favorable TPIAT outcomes should be considered in the decision to perform early TPIAT in cases of genetic CP.

The growing interest in wearable and portable devices has stimulated the need for flexible and stretchable lithium-ion batteries (LiBs). A crucial component in these batteries is the separator, which provides a pathway for Li-ion transfer and prevents electrode contact. In a flexible and stretchable LiB, the separator must exhibit stretchability and elasticity akin to its existing counterparts. Here, we developed a non-modified thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) separator using the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. We compared their performance with commercially available polypropylene (PP) separators. Our results demonstrate that TPU separators exhibit superior elasticity based on repeated stretch/release tests with excellent thermal stability and electrolyte wettability. Furthermore, our findings confirm that TPU separators, even after being repeatedly stretched and released, can function effectively without severe damage in a fabricated coin cell LiB with high oxidative stability, as evidenced by linear sweep voltammetry, like commercially available separators.

BACKGROUND: Caesarean section (CS) is a complex surgical procedure that involves many steps and requires careful precision. Virtual reality (VR) simulation has emerged as a promising tool for medical education and training, providing a realistic and immersive environment for learners to practice clinical skills and decision-making. This study aimed to evaluate the educational effectiveness of a VR simulation program in training the management of patients with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) and CS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A two-arm parallel randomized controlled trial was conducted with 105 eligible participants randomly assigned to the VR group ( n =53) or the control group ( n =52) in a 1:1 ratio. The VR group received VR simulation training focused on PROM management and CS practice, while the control group watched a video presentation with narrative of clinical scenario and recording of CS. Both groups completed questionnaires assessing their prior experiences with VR, experience in managing patients with PROM and performing CS, as well as their confidence levels. These questionnaires were administered before and after the intervention, along with a mini-test quiz. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics and previous experiences were comparable between the two groups. After the intervention, the VR group had higher confidence scores in all four aspects, including managing patients with PROM, performing CS as an operator, and understanding the indications and complications of CS, compared to the control group. The VR group also achieved significantly higher scores on the mini-test quiz [median (interquartile range), 42 (37-48) in the VR group; 36 (32-40) in the control group, P <0.001]. CONCLUSION: VR simulation program can be an effective educational tool for improving participants' knowledge and confidence in managing patients with PROM and performing CS.

INTRODUCTION: Around 12% of Europeans and 20% of Americans have at least one tattoo. Tattoo inks, the substances used to create tattoos on the body, consist of chemicals that contain formaldehyde, which can be harmful to human health. The amount of formaldehyde present in commercially available tattoo inks and its causes are not well understood. METHODS: We investigated the levels of formaldehyde in tattoo ink products sold in different countries and identified the factors contributing to its production. We also explored methods to reduce formaldehyde generation in tattoo inks. Seven tattoo inks from various brands were tested. RESULTS: Formaldehyde release was predominantly associated with gamma radiation sterilization. Formaldehyde levels were observed to be higher in compositions containing organic components compared to those with inorganic components, irrespective of sterilization method and container type. Glycerin released over seven times more formaldehyde than other components during gamma-ray sterilization. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the presence of hydroxyl groups in carbon organic compounds in tattoo ink leads to photodegradation during gamma-ray radiation sterilization, resulting in increased concentrations of formaldehyde. Further research is needed to examine the chemical reactions occurring during sterilization processes and identify alternative sterilization methods that minimize formaldehyde formation. Additionally, the development of tattoo inks with reduced formaldehyde content and the establishment of strict quality control measures can help ensure the safety of tattooing practices.

RESUMO

A chemotherapeutic approach is crucial in malignancy management, which is often challenging due to the development of chemoresistance. Over time, chemo-resistant cancer cells rapidly repopulate and metastasize, increasing the recurrence rate in cancer patients. Targeting these destined cancer cells is more troublesome for clinicians, as they share biology and molecular cross-talks with normal cells. However, the recent insights into the metabolic profiles of chemo-resistant cancer cells surprisingly illustrated the activation of distinct pathways compared with chemo-sensitive or primary cancer cells. These distinct metabolic dynamics are vital and contribute to the shift from chemo-sensitivity to chemo-resistance in cancer. This review will discuss the important metabolic alterations in cancer cells that lead to drug resistance.

Childhood neglect and/or abuse can induce mental health conditions with unknown mechanisms. Here, we identified stress hormones as strong inducers of astrocyte-mediated synapse phagocytosis. Using in vitro, in vivo, and human brain organoid experiments, we showed that stress hormones increased the expression of the Mertk phagocytic receptor in astrocytes through glucocorticoid receptor (GR). In post-natal mice, exposure to early social deprivation (ESD) specifically activated the GR-MERTK pathway in astrocytes, but not in microglia. The excitatory post-synaptic density in cortical regions was reduced in ESD mice, and there was an increase in the astrocytic engulfment of these synapses. The loss of excitatory synapses, abnormal neuronal network activities, and behavioral abnormalities in ESD mice were largely prevented by ablating GR or MERTK in astrocytes. Our work reveals the critical roles of astrocytic GR-MERTK activation in evoking stress-induced abnormal behaviors in mice, suggesting GR-MERTK signaling as a therapeutic target for stress-induced mental health conditions.

BACKGROUND: Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake is associated with adverse health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: We examined associations between the knowledge of health risks related to SSB and SSB intake among adolescents. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study using 2021 YouthStyles survey data. PARTICIPANTS/SETTINGS: 831 US adolescents (12-17 years old). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The outcome variable was SSB intake (none, 1-6 times/week, and ≥1 time/day). Exposure variables were knowledge of seven SSB-related health risks. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Seven multinomial regressions were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (AOR) for drinking SSB, according to knowledge of SSB-related health risks and after controlling for sociodemographics. RESULTS: Overall, 29% of adolescents consumed SSB ≥1 time/day. Although most adolescents identified cavities (75.4%), weight gain (74.6%), and diabetes (69.7%) as being related to drinking SSB, fewer adolescents identified related conditions such as high blood pressure (31.7%), high cholesterol (25.8%), heart disease (24.6%), and some cancers (18.0%). Compared to non-SSB consumers, drinking SSB ≥1 time/day was significantly higher among adolescents who lacked knowledge of associations between SSB intake and weight gain (AOR = 2.0), heart disease (AOR = 1.9), or some cancers (AOR = 2.3) after controlling for covariates. CONCLUSIONS: Among US adolescents, knowledge of SSB-related health risks varied by condition, ranging from 18% (some cancers) to 75% (cavities and weight gain). There were increased odds of drinking SSB among those unaware that weight gain, heart disease, and some cancers are associated with SSB intake. Intervention could evaluate whether increasing certain types of knowledge may influence youth SSB intake.

The 2020−2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) recommends less than 10% of total daily calories come from added sugars. However, many adults overconsume added sugars putting them at risk for poor health outcomes. We examined characteristics of high added sugars consumers among US adults (≥20 years) and described their top 10 sources of added sugars intake using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2015−2018 data (n = 9647). We defined high consumers as consuming >15% of daily calories from added sugars (1.5 times higher than the DGA). We used the National Cancer Institute method to estimate usual intake of energy and percent of calories from added sugars. Top 10 sources were identified based on their percentage contribution to total added sugars intake on a given day. T-tests were used to examine differences by age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, income, marital status, and weight status. Overall, mean usual total energy intake and added sugars intake was 2068 kcal/day and 264 kcal/day, respectively, and 30% of adults were classified as high consumers. Background: High consumption of added sugars is related to adverse health consequences. Objective: The objective of this study was to examine characteristics of US youth who report high intakes of added sugars, as well as the eating occasions and top sources of added sugars that contributed to intakes among consumers with high added sugars intake. Design and participants/setting: We conducted a cross-sectional study using 2015−2018 NHANES data among 5280 US youths (2−19 years). Main outcome measures: Outcome measure was usual percent of calories from added sugars using 2 days of dietary recall based on the National Cancer Institute method. High consumers were defined as consuming greater than 15% of total daily calorie intake from added sugars (1.5 times higher than the 2020−2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendation of <10% of total daily calorie intake). Explanatory measures were selected sociodemographics (e.g., age, sex, race/ethnicity). Eating occasions were breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack. Statistical analyses performed: We used t-tests to compare mean differences between sociodemographic groups. Results: Overall, 34% of US youths were classified as high consumers of added sugars. The prevalence of high consumers of added sugars significantly varied by some sociodemographics (i.e., age, race/ethnicity, and head of household's education level). The prevalence of high added sugars consumers was significantly greater among 12−19-year-olds (41%) and 6−11-year-olds (37%) compared to 2−5-year-olds (19%), non-Hispanic Black (42%) and non-Hispanic White (42%) persons compared to Hispanic persons (19%), and those with a head of household's education level of high school/some college (40%) compared to households with college degree or higher (29%). The prevalence of high consumers did not differ by sex, income, or weight status. Of eating occasions, the amount of added sugars youths consumed was highest during snack occasions among high consumers. Top five sources of added sugars among high consumers on a given day were sweetened beverages, sweet bakery products, candy, other desserts, and ready-to-eat cereals. Conclusion: One in three US youths consumed more than 15% of total calories from added sugars. High added sugars intake was more prevalent among certain subgroups such as 12−19-year-olds and non-Hispanic Black or non-Hispanic White youth. Our findings can provide information for intervention efforts to decrease added sugars intake to promote child health.

Purpose: The high intake of added sugars from foods or beverages increases the risk of obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. Because state-level data are lacking, we estimated dietary intake of added sugars by state and factors associated with intake among US adults. Design: Nationally representative, cross-sectional, in-person, household survey. Setting: 50 states and DC. Sample: 52,279 US adults from pooled data from 2010 and 2015 National Health Interview Surveys. Measures: Estimated total added sugars intake (tsp/day) using the National Cancer Institute's scoring algorithm that converts responses from the Dietary Survey Questionnaire screener to estimated total added sugars intake (tsp/day). Analysis: Mean dietary-added sugars intake estimates and standard error were calculated for adults' characteristics and by state for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Differences by adult's characteristics were assessed by pairwise t-tests (p < 0.05). All analyses accounted for complex survey design and sampling weights. Results: Overall, US adults consumed 17.0 tsp of added sugars/day (range: 14.8 tsp/day in Alaska to 1.2 tsp/day in Kentucky). Added sugars intake varied by states and sociodemographic characteristics. Conclusion: Findings may inform efforts to reduce added sugars intake to lower the high burden of chronic disease.

Air pollution is a severe concern globally as it disturbs the health conditions of living beings and the environment because of the discharge of acetone molecules. Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) nanomaterials are crucial for developing efficient sensors because of their outstanding chemical and physical properties, empowering the inclusive developments in gas sensor productivity. This review presents the ZnO nanostructure state of the art and notable growth, and their structural, morphological, electronic, optical, and acetone-sensing properties. The key parameters, such as response, gas detection limit, sensitivity, reproducibility, response and recovery time, selectivity, and stability of the acetone sensor, have been discussed. Furthermore, gas-sensing mechanism models based on MOS for acetone sensing are reported and discussed. Finally, future possibilities and challenges for MOS (ZnO)-based gas sensors for acetone detection have also been explored.

BACKGROUND: Stem cell therapy has emerged as a novel treatment for heart failure after myocardial infarction (Ml). Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are commonly considered because of their accessibility and usability. However, their therapeutic potential remains controversial. In our previous in vitro study, chorion-derived mesenchymal stem cells (C-MSCs) and umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) demonstrated an ability to differentiate into cardiomyocytes and neural cells, respectively. Thus, we examined whether C-MSCs had a better differentiation potential in an MI animal model. METHODS: MI was induced by ligation of the left anterior descending artery, and DiI-labeled MSCs were injected into the border of the infarcted myocardium. The left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and fractional shortening (FS) were measured using echocardiograms. Masson's Trichrome staining was performed to evaluate the viable myocardium. Alpha-sarcomeric actin (α-SA), cardiac troponin-T (cTnT), and isolectin were immunolabeled to evaluate differentiation and capillary formation. RESULTS: After 8 weeks, the LVEF and FS significantly increased to a greater extent in the C-MSC-injected group with maintenance of viable myocardium, as compared to in the control, UC-MSC-, and BM-MSC-injected groups (p < 0.05). Compared to UC-MSCs and BM-MSCs, C-MSCs significantly increased the capillary density (p < 0.05) and demonstrated higher expressions of cTnT and α-SA. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, compared to UC-MSCs and BM-MSCs, C-MSCs showed a better therapeutic efficacy in a rat MI model.

The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans* advise incorporating more fruits and vegetables into U.S. residents' diets as part of healthy dietary patterns. Adults should consume 1.5-2 cup-equivalents of fruits and 2-3 cup-equivalents of vegetables daily.† A healthy diet supports healthy immune function (1) and helps to prevent obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and some cancers (2); having some of these conditions can predispose persons to more severe illness and death from COVID-19 (3). CDC used the most recent 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance system (BRFSS) data to estimate the percentage of states' adult population who met intake recommendations overall and by sociodemographic characteristics for 49 states and the District of Columbia (DC). Overall, 12.3% of adults met fruit recommendations, ranging from 8.4% in West Virginia to 16.1% in Connecticut, and 10.0% met vegetable recommendations, ranging from 5.6% in Kentucky to 16.0% in Vermont. The prevalence of meeting fruit intake recommendations was highest among Hispanic adults (16.4%) and lowest among males (10.1%); meeting vegetable intake recommendations was highest among adults aged ≥51 years (12.5%) and lowest among those living below or close to the poverty level (income to poverty ratio [IPR] <1.25) (6.8%). Additional policies§ and programs that will increase access to fruits and vegetables in places where U.S. residents live, learn, work, and play, might increase consumption and improve health.

We report here that the potent HNF4α agonist N-trans-caffeoyltyramine (NCT) promotes weight loss by inducing an increase in mitochondrial mass and function, including fatty acid oxidation. Previously, we found in a short term trial in obese mice that NCT promoted reversal of hepatic steatosis through a mechanism involving the stimulation of lipophagy by dihydroceramides. NCT led to increased dihydroceramide levels by inhibiting dihydroceramide conversion to ceramides. Here, we were able to administer NCT orally, permitting longer term administration. Mice fed NCT mixed with high fat diet exhibited decreased weight. Examination of RNA-seq data revealed an increase in PPARGC1A, a central regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis. In addition to the decreased hepatic steatosis that we found previously, mice fed a high fat diet containing NCT mice weighed substantially less than control mice fed high fat diet alone. They had increased mitochondrial mass, exhibited increased fatty acid oxidation, and had an increased level of NAD. Markers of liver inflammation such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), which are important in the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis were decreased by NCT. There was no evidence of any toxicity from NCT consumption. These results indicate that HNF4α is an important regulator of mitochondrial mass and function and support that use of HNF4α to treat disorders of fatty acid excess, potentially including obesity, NAFLD, and NASH.

PURPOSE: We examined associations between academic grades and positive health behaviors, individually and collectively, among U.S. high school students. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study design. SETTING: Data were from the 2017 national Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Response rates were 75% for schools, 81% for students, and 60% overall (n = 14,765 students). SUBJECTS: Youth in grades 9th-12th. MEASURES: We focused on youth behaviors that can prevent or delay the onset of chronic health conditions. Seven dietary, 3 physical activity, 2 sedentary screen time, and 4 tobacco product use behaviors were assessed. Variables were dichotomized (0/1) to indicate that a score was given to the positive health behavior response (e.g.,, did not smoke cigarettes = 1). A composite score was created by summing each positive health behavior response among 16 total health behaviors. ANALYSIS: Multivariable logistic regression analyses for each individual health behavior, and a multivariable negative binomial regression for the composite score, were conducted with self-reported academic grades, controlling for sex, grade in school, race/ethnicity, and body mass index (BMI) categories. RESULTS: Controlling for covariates, students who reported mostly A's had 2.0 (P < .001) more positive health behaviors; students who reported mostly B's had 1.3 (P < .001) more positive health behaviors; and students who reported mostly C's had .78 (P < .001) more positive health behaviors, compared to students who reported mostly D's/F's. CONCLUSIONS: Higher academic grades are associated with more positive individual and cumulative health behaviors among high school students. Understanding these relationships can help inform efforts to create a healthy and supportive school environment and strive for health equity.

Silica-coated gold nanorods (AuNRs) exhibit significantly enhanced photothermal effects and photoacoustic (PA) signal intensities, which is beneficial for various nanophotonic applications in materials science. However, the silica shell thickness for optimum enhancement is not fully understood and is even controversial depending on the physical state of the silica shell. This is because of the lack of systematic investigations of the nanoscale silica shell thickness and the photothermal effect. This study provides a robust synthetic method to control the silica shell thickness at the nanoscale and the physical state-dependent heat diffusion property. The selected base and solvent system enabled the production of silica-coated AuNRs (AuNR@SiO2) with silica shell thicknesses of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 nm. AuNRs with a 20 nm silica shell showed the highest photothermal effect with a 1.45-times higher photothermal efficiency than that of AuNRs without a silica shell. The low density of the silica shell on the AuNRs showed a low photothermal effect and photostability. It was found that the disruption of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) layers on the AuNRs was responsible for the low photostability of the AuNRs. The simulation study for the heat diffusion property showed facilitated heat diffusion in the presence of a 20 nm silica shell. In a cell-based study, AuNRs with a 20 nm silica shell showed the most sensitive photothermal effect for cell death. The results of this robust study can provide conclusive conditions for the optimal silica shell thickness to obtain the highest photothermal effect, which will be useful for the future design of nanomaterials in various fields of application.

We report the discovery of strong HNF4α agonists and their use to uncover a previously unknown pathway by which HNF4α controls the level of fat storage in the liver. This involves the induction of lipophagy by dihydroceramides, the synthesis and secretion of which is controlled by genes induced by HNF4α. The HNF4α activators are N-trans caffeoyltyramine (NCT) and N-trans feruloyltyramine (NFT), which are structurally related to the known drugs alverine and benfluorex, which we previously showed to be weak HNF4α activators. In vitro, NCT and NFT induced fat clearance from palmitate-loaded cells. In DIO mice, NCT led to recovery of hepatic HNF4α expression and reduction of steatosis. Mechanistically, increased dihydroceramide production and action downstream of HNF4α occurred through increased expression of HNF4α downstream genes, including SPNS2 and CYP26A1. NCT was completely nontoxic at the highest dose administered and so is a strong candidate for an NAFLD therapeutic.

Glia contribute to synapse elimination through phagocytosis in the central nervous system. Despite the important roles of this process in development and neurological disorders, the identity and regulation of the "eat-me" signal that initiates glia-mediated phagocytosis of synapses has remained incompletely understood. Here, we generated conditional knockout mice with neuronal-specific deletion of the flippase chaperone Cdc50a, to induce stable exposure of phosphatidylserine, a well-known "eat-me" signal for apoptotic cells, on the neuronal outer membrane. Surprisingly, acute Cdc50a deletion in mature neurons causes preferential phosphatidylserine exposure in neuronal somas and specific loss of inhibitory post-synapses without effects on other synapses, resulting in abnormal excitability and seizures. Ablation of microglia or the deletion of microglial phagocytic receptor Mertk prevents the loss of inhibitory post-synapses and the seizure phenotype, indicating that microglial phagocytosis is responsible for inhibitory post-synapse elimination. Moreover, we found that phosphatidylserine is used for microglia-mediated pruning of inhibitory post-synapses in normal brains, suggesting that phosphatidylserine serves as a general "eat-me" signal for inhibitory post-synapse elimination.

PURPOSE: A safe and effective hemostatic care is necessary after bone marrow examination to minimize bleeding, pain, and discomfort. However, a standardized hemostatic care protocol following bone marrow examination has not been established. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in bleeding, hematoma, pain, and discomfort by the hemostatic method used following bone marrow examination. METHODS: This study was carried out with a pre-test/post-test nonequivalent control group design. Sixty-four patients undergoing bone marrow examination at the hemato-oncology ward in a tertiary hospital in South Korea were assigned to an intervention (n = 30) and comparison group (n = 34). The intervention group was treated using a compression dressing alone, while the comparison group received a compression dressing followed by sandbag compression. Both groups received two hours of bedrest. Bleeding, hematoma, pain, and discomfort were measured at one and two hours after the biopsy. RESULTS: No significant differences in the occurrence of bleeding between the groups at one and two hours after bone marrow examination were observed, and no participant developed hematoma. The intervention group had significantly lower pain than the comparison group two hours after the bone marrow examination as well as lower discomfort one hour and two hours after the bone marrow examination (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Applying only compression dressing after a bone marrow examination is effective in reducing pain and discomfort without measurable differences in bleeding and hematoma, suggesting that compression dressings alone could be effective in lowering pain and discomfort following bone marrow examination.

According to the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, persons should consume fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy eating pattern to reduce their risk for diet-related chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and obesity.* A healthy diet is important for healthy growth in adolescence, especially because adolescent health behaviors might continue into adulthood (1). The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends minimum daily intake of 1.5 cups of fruit and 2.5 cups of vegetables for females aged 14-18 years and 2 cups of fruit and 3 cups of vegetables for males aged 14-18 years.† Despite the benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption, few adolescents consume these recommended amounts (2-4). In 2013, only 8.5% of high school students met the recommendation for fruit consumption, and only 2.1% met the recommendation for vegetable consumption (2). To update the 2013 data, CDC analyzed data from the 2017 national and state Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBSs) to describe the percentage of students who met intake recommendations, overall and by sex, school grade, and race/ethnicity. The median frequencies of fruit and vegetable consumption nationally were 0.9 and 1.1 times per day, respectively. Nationally, 7.1% of students met USDA intake recommendations for fruits (95% confidence interval [CI] = 4.0-10.3) and 2.0% for vegetables (upper 95% confidence limit = 7.9) using previously established scoring algorithms. State-specific estimates of the percentage of students meeting fruit intake recommendations ranged from 4.0% (Connecticut) to 9.3% (Louisiana), and the percentage meeting vegetable intake recommendations ranged from 0.6% (Kansas) to 3.7% (New Mexico). Additional efforts to expand the reach of existing school and community programs or to identify new effective strategies, such as social media approaches, might help address barriers and improve adolescent fruit and vegetable consumption.
