RESUMO

The antioxidant capacity and protective effect of peptides from protein hydrolysate of Cordyceps militaris cultivated with tussah pupa (ECPs) on H2O2-injured HepG2 cells were studied. Results indicated ECP1 (<3 kDa) presented the strongest antioxidant activity compared with other molecular weight peptides. Pretreated with ECPs observably enhanced survival rates and reduced apoptosis rates of HepG2 cells. ECPs treatment decreased the ROS level, MDA content and increased CAT and GSH-Px activities of HepG2 cells. Besides, the morphologies of natural peptides from C. militaris cultivated with tussah pupa (NCP1) and ECP1 were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Characterization results suggested the structure of NCP1 was changed by enzymatic hydrolysis treatment. Most of hydrophobic and acidic amino acids contents (ACC) in ECP1 were also observably improved by enzymatic hydrolysis. In conclusion, low molecular weight peptides had potential value in the development of cosmetics and health food.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It is well acknowledged that tobacco-derived lung carcinogens can induce lung injury and even lung cancer through a complex mechanism. MicroRNAs (MiRNAs) are differentially expressed in tobacco-derived carcinogen nicotine-derived nitrosamine ketone (NNK)-treated A/J mice. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: RNA sequencing was used to detect the level of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Murine and human lung normal and cancer cells were used to evaluate the function of lncRNA XIST and miR-328-3p in vitro, and NNK-treated A/J mice were used to test their function in vivo. In vivo levels of miR-328-3p and lncRNA XIST were analysed, using in situ hybridization. miR-328-3p agomir and lncRNA XIST-specific siRNA were used to manipulate in vivo levels of miR-328-3p and lncRNA XIST in A/J mice. KEY RESULTS: LncRNA XIST was up-regulated in NNK-induced lung injury and dominated the NNK-induced ectopic miRNA expression in NNK-induced lung injury both in vitro and in vivo. Either lncRNA XIST silencing or miR-328-3p overexpression exerted opposing effects in lung normal and cancer cells regarding cell migration. LncRNA XIST down-regulated miR-328-3p levels as a miRNA sponge, and miR-328-3p targeted the 3'-UTR of FZD7 mRNA, which is ectopically overexpressed in lung cancer patients. Both in vivo lncRNA XIST silencing and miR-328 overexpression could rescue NNK-induced lung injury and aberrant overexpression of the lung cancer biomarker CK19 in NNK-treated A/J mice. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Our results highlight the promotive effect of lncRNA XIST in NNK-induced lung injury and elucidate its post-transcriptional mechanisms, indicating that targeting lncRNA XIST/miR-328-3p could be a potential therapeutic strategy to prevent tobacco carcinogen-induced lung injury in vivo.

RESUMO

Gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) with bright emission and unique chemical reactivity characters have been widely applied for optical sensing and imaging. With a combination of surface modifications, effective therapeutic treatments of tumors are realized. In this review, we summarize the recently adopted biosensing and therapy events based on Au NCs. Homogeneous and fluorometric biosensing systems toward various targets, including ions, small molecules, reactive oxygen species, biomacromolecules, cancer cells, and bacteria, in vitro and in vivo, are presented by turn-off, turn-on, and ratiometric tactics. The therapy applications are concluded in three aspects: photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and as a drug carrier. The basic mechanisms and performances of these systems are introduced. Finally, this review highlights the challenges and future trend of Au NC-based biosensing and therapy systems.

OBJECTIVE: Stocking density (SD) is an important issue in the poultry industry, which is related to the production performance, intestinal health and immune status. In the present study, the effects of SD on the metabolism and homeostasis of uric acid as well as the related functions of the liver and kidney in ducks were examined. METHODS: A total of 360 healthy 56-day-old Shan-ma ducks were randomly divided into the low stocking density (n = 60, density = 5 birds/m2), medium stocking density (n = 120, density = 10 birds/m2) and high stocking density groups (HSD; n = 180, density = 15 birds/m2). Samples were collected in the 3rd, 6th, and 9th weeks of the experiment for analysis. RESULTS: The serum levels of uric acid, lipopolysaccharide and inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1ß [IL-1ß], IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α]) were increased significantly in the HSD group. Serious histopathological lesions could be seen in both the livers and kidneys in the HSD group in the 9th week. The mRNA expression levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL-8 and TNF-α) and related pathway components (toll-like receptor 4, myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88, and nuclear factor-κB) were increased significantly in both the livers and kidneys in the HSD group. The mRNA expression levels of enzymes (adenosine deaminase, xanthine oxidase, phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate amidotransferase, and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate synthetase 1) related to the synthesis of uric acid increased significantly in the livers in the HSD group. However, the mRNA expression level of solute carrier family 2 member 9, which plays an important role in the excretion of uric acid by the kidney, was decreased significantly in the kidneys in the HSD group. CONCLUSION: These results indicated that a higher SD could cause tissue inflammatory lesions in the liver and kidney and subsequently affect the metabolism and homeostasis of uric acid, and is helpful for guiding decisions related to the breeding and production of ducks.

PURPOSE: Thyroid cancer (TC) is one of the most common endocrine malignancies, and its morbidity continues to rise. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA methylation, an epigenetic modification, is an important regulator of gene expression in TC. Therefore, it's worth finding the characteristics and predictive value of the m6A RNA methylation regulators in thyroid cancer (TC). METHOD: RNA-seq data of TC was downloaded from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database to screen out the differential expressed regulators. The absolute contraction selection operator (Lasso) Cox regression was used to construct the risk model of m6A methylation regulators. The predictive value of the risk scoring model was evaluated by Kaplan Meier (K-M) analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The underlying mechanism of m6A methylation regulators in TC was predicted by gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). Further validation was performed by using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and q-PCR. The correlation between risk-related gene and immune infiltration was evaluated by Tumour Immune Estimation Resource (TIMER). RESULTS: IGF2BP2, YTHDF1 and YTHDF3 were screened out as strong independent prognostic factors of TC. Then a risk score model was established to further screen the predictors. Finally, according to the results of overall survival (OS) and clinical characteristics of TC, YTHDF3 was screened out as a potential predictor. Meanwhile, IHC and qPCR confirmed that YTHDF3 was expressed differential in TC. The expression of YTHDF3 was positively associated with the infiltration level of CD4+ T cells and macrophages. It was strongly correlated with a variety of immune markers in TC. CONCLUSION: We confirmed that YTHDF3 can be used as a potential prognostic biomarker of TC. It not only plays a decisive role in the initiation and development of TC, but also provides a new perspective for understanding the modification of m6A RNA in TC.

Background: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is an autoimmune thyroid disease. Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common endocrine cancer. In recent years the rate of coexistence between PTC and HT has increased but the relationship between them remains unclear, meaning it is necessary to find potential biomarkers for PTC coexistence with HT to predict its potential pathways. Method: A co-expression network was constructed using the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) in the R package. The modules of PTC associated with HT (PTC-W) were identified from the GSE138198 dataset. Protein-protein interaction network (PPI) was used to screen the hub genes. Immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis was performed to validate the expression of the hub genes in tissues. Clinical data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets were used to analyse the prognosis of the hub genes. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was used to screen potential pathways of PTC-W. Result: The MEbrown module representing the most significant module, with 958 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), was screened in PTC-W, based on WGCNA analysis. Through PPI, SERPINA1 was identified as a hub gene. Immunostaining validated that SERPINA1 was highly expressed in PTC-W. Moreover, PTC-W expressing SERPINA1 exhibits a better prognosis than PTC without HT (PTC-WO). Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that SERPINA1 promotes the occurrence of PTC-W, and its prognosis is better than PTC-WO. SERPINA1 promotes a better prognosis for PTC-W, possibly through a tumour inhibition signalling pathway.

Lead-free inorganic copper-silver-bismuth-halide materials have attracted more and more attention due to their environmental friendliness, high element abundance, and low cost. Here, we developed a strategy of one-step gas-solid-phase diffusion-induced reaction to fabricate a series of bandgap-tunable CuaAgm1Bim2In/CuI bilayer films due to the atomic diffusion effect for the first time. By designing and regulating the sputtered Cu/Ag/Bi metal film thickness, the bandgap of CuaAgm1Bim2In could be reduced from 2.06 to 1.78 eV. Solar cells with the structure of FTO/TiO2/CuaAgm1Bim2In/CuI/carbon were constructed, yielding a champion power conversion efficiency of 2.76%, which is the highest reported for this class of materials owing to the bandgap reduction and the peculiar bilayer structure. The current work provides a practical path for developing the next generation of efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly photovoltaic materials.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can affect the immune system of geese by inducing liver injury. The polysaccharide of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz (PAMK) have obvious immune-enhancing effects. Accordingly, this experiment investigated the effect of PAMK on LPS-induced liver injury in goslings. Two hundred 1-day-old goslings were randomly divided into the control group, LPS group, PAMK group, and PAMK+ LPS group, and the PAMK and PAMK+ LPS groups were fed the basal diet with 400 mg/kg PAMK, while the control and LPS groups were fed the basal diet. On D 21, 23, and 25 of the formal trial, the goslings in the LPS and PAMK+LPS groups were injected intraperitoneally with 2 mg/kg LPS, and goslings in the control and PAMK groups were injected intraperitoneally with the same amount of saline. Livers were collected on D 25. HE-stained sections showed that PAMK could effectively alleviate the LPS-induced indistinct hepatic cord structure, loss of cytoplasmic contents of hepatocytes, and dilatation of hepatic sinusoids. The biochemical parameters of liver tissues showed that PAMK could alleviate the LPS-induced upregulation of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase. To further investigate the mechanism of the mitigating effect of PAMK on LPS-induced injury, livers from the LPS and PAMK+LPS groups were selected for transcriptome sequencing. The sequencing results showed that there were 406 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the livers of LPS and PAMK+LPS goslings, of which 242 upregulated and 164 downregulated. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome (KEGG) analysis showed that DEGs were significantly enriched in immune signal transduction, cell cycle, and cell metabolism. Besides, protein‒protein interaction analysis showed that 129 DEGs were associated with each other, including 7 DEGs enriched in the p53 and FOXO signaling pathway. In conclusion, PAMK may alleviate LPS-induced liver injury in gosling through the p53 and FOXO signaling pathway. These results provide a basis for further development of PAMK as an immunomodulator.

Bone marrow (BM) stroma plays key roles in supporting hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) growth. Glycosylation contributes to the interactions between HSC and surrounding microenvironment. We observed that bisecting N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) structures, in BM stromal cells were significantly lower for MDS/AML patients than for healthy subjects. Malignant clonal cells delivered exosomal miR-188-5p to recipient stromal cells, where it suppressed bisecting GlcNAc by targeting MGAT3 gene. Proteomic analysis revealed reduced GlcNAc structures and enhanced expression of MCAM, a marker of BM niche. We characterized MCAM as a bisecting GlcNAc-bearing target protein, and identified Asn 56 as bisecting GlcNAc modification site on MCAM. MCAM on stromal cell surface with reduced bisecting GlcNAc bound strongly to CD13 on myeloid cells, activated responding ERK signaling, and thereby promoted myeloid cell growth. Our findings, taken together, suggest a novel mechanism whereby MDS/AML clonal cells generate a self-permissive niche by modifying glycosylation level of stromal cells.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting females worldwide. Early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer may aid in timely treatment, reducing the mortality rate to a great extent. To diagnose breast cancer, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems employ a variety of imaging modalities such as mammography, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and histological imaging. CAD and breast-imaging specialists are in high demand for early detection and diagnosis. This system has the potential to enhance the partiality of traditional histopathological image analysis. This review aims to highlight the recent advancements and the current state of CAD systems for breast cancer detection using different modalities.

BACKGROUND: Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune disease, the incidence of which is increasing yearly. GD requires long-life therapy. Therefore, the potential immune-related biomarkers of GD need to be studied. METHOD: In our study, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were derived from the online Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) microarray expression dataset GSE71956. Protein‒protein interaction (PPI) network analyses were used to identify hub genes, which were validated by qPCR. GSEA was used to screen potential pathways and related immune cells. Next, CIBERSORT analysis was used to further explore the immune subtype distribution pattern among hub genes. ROC curves were used to analyze the specificity and sensitivity of hub genes. RESULT: 44 DEGs were screened from the GEO dataset. Two hub genes, EEF1A1 and EIF4B, were obtained from the PPI network and validated by qPCR (p < 0.05). GSEA was conducted to identify potential pathways and immune cells related to these the two hub genes. Immune cell subtype analysis revealed that hub genes had extensive associations with many different types of immune cells, particularly resting memory CD4+ T cells. AUCs of ROC analysis were 0.687 and 0.733 for EEF1A1 and EIF4B, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed two hub genes, EEF1A1 and EIF4B, that are associated with resting memory CD4+ T cells and potential immune-related molecular biomarkers and therapeutic targets of GD.

Polysaccharides from Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz (PAMK) can promote the proliferation of thymocytes and improve the body's immunity. However, the effect of PAMK on thymic epithelial cells has not been reported. Studies have shown that miRNAs and lncRNAs are key factors in regulating cell proliferation. In this study, we found that PAMK could promote the proliferation of mouse medullary thymic epithelial cell line 1 (MTEC1) cells through CCK-8 and EdU experiments. To further explore its mechanism, we detected the effect of PAMK on the expression profiles of lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs in MTEC1 cells. The results showed that PAMK significantly affected the expression of 225 lncRNAs, 29 miRNAs, and 800 mRNAs. Functional analysis showed that these differentially expressed genes were significantly enriched in cell cycle, cell division, NF-kappaB signaling, apoptotic process, and MAPK signaling pathway. Finally, we used Cytoscape to visualize lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA(14 lncRNAs, 17 miRNAs, 171 mRNAs) networks based on ceRNA theory. These results suggest that lncRNAs and miRNAs may be involved in the effect of PAMK on the proliferation of MTEC1 cells, providing a new research direction for exploring the molecular mechanism of PAMK promoting the proliferation of thymic epithelial cells.

RESUMO

"Exterior-interior correlation between the lung and large intestine" is one of the important contents of traditional Chinese medicine. This theory describes the role of the lung and the intestine in association with disease treatment. The "lung-gut" axis is a modern extension of the "exterior-interior correlation between lung and large intestine" theory in TCM. Sirtuin (SIRT) is a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent enzyme family with deacetylase properties, which is highly conserved from bacteria to humans. The sirtuin defines seven silencing regulatory proteins (SIRT1-7) in human cells. It can regulate aging, metabolism, and certain diseases. Current studies have shown that sirtuins have dual characteristics, acting as both tumor promoters and tumor inhibitors in cancers. This paper provides a comparative summary of the roles of SIRT1-7 in the intestine and lung (both inflammatory diseases and tumors), and the promoter/suppressor effects of targeting SIRT family microRNAs and modulators of inflammation or tumors. Sirtuins have great potential as drug targets for the treatment of intestinal and respiratory diseases. Meanwhile, it may provide new ideas of future drug target research.

BACKGROUND: The application/abuse of antibiotics can cause antibiotic-induced intestinal injury (AIJ), a typical clinical issue that disturbs intestinal homeostasis. However, the underlying post-transcriptional mechanism of AIJ remains unknown. Glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) is one of the main components of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. and Glycyrrhiza inflata Batalin (Fabaceae), and findings of our previous study showed that GA can maintain intestinal homeostasis post-transcriptionally through the RNA-binding protein human antigen R (HuR). PURPOSE: This study aimed to elucidate the role of HuR in AIJ and the protective effects of GA on AIJ. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Clindamycin hydrochloride was used to clarify the effect of the antibiotic on the intestinal epithelium. Intestinal epithelium cell-6 (IEC-6) and Caco2 cells were used to demonstrate the in vitro effects of the antibiotic and GA on intestinal cells. HuR plasmid and siRNA were used to overexpress or silence HuR in vitro. SD rats were induced by using clindamycin hydrochloride capsules (250 mg/kg i.g.) for 7 consecutive days to construct the in vivo AIJ model. Rats of the AIJ model group were administrated GA (10 and 20 mg/kg i.g.) for 7 days, and subsequently, the protective effect of GA on the intestinal epithelium was evaluated. RESULTS: In vitro results showed that the antibiotic (150-500 µM) suppressed proliferation, induced a delay in restitution after wounding, and caused cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase in IEC-6 and Caco-2 cells. Moreover, the expression levels of HuR and its downstream gene, occludin and cyclin D1, decreased after treatment with the antibiotic (500 µM). Overexpression of HuR and GA (10 and 20 µM) reversed the antibiotic-induced inhibition of proliferation and G0/G1 phase arrest, and the antibiotic-induced decrease in HuR, occludin, and cyclin D1 expression was reversed after GA treatment (10 and 20 µM) in IEC-6 cells. In vivo results revealed the antibiotic-induced epithelial injury of both the small intestines (shortened and spared mucosa) and the large intestines (injured/deformed glands, reduced number of cup cells, and evident inflammatory cell infiltration), all of which were ameliorated after GA treatment (10 and 20 µM). CONCLUSION: Antibiotics induce intestinal epithelial injury through HuR, and GA can exert a protective effect on AIJ by restoring HuR levels.

In this study, the popular food and medicinal herb Ophiopogon japonicus was investigated alongside a 70% ethanol extract of its rhizomes, revealing twenty-three steroidal glycosides with four undescribed steroidal saponins, named ophiopogonols A-D. Among them, ophiopogonols A-B are two unusual spirostanols with a rearranged A/B ring system (5/7/6/5/5/6 ring system) that have not previously been identified in plants. The chemical structures of all isolated steroidal glycosides were elucidated by comprehensive analysis through chemical methods, HRESIMS, and NMR spectroscopy. Further, putative biosynthetic pathways for ophiopogonols A-B were proposed. In addition, based on traditional applications of O. japonicus, cytotoxic effects of the isolates were evaluated using human large cell lung carcinoma cells (NCI-H460 cells). Sprengerinin C displayed a remarkable cytotoxic effect with IC50 values of 2.1 ± 0.8 µM by inducing apoptosis and G2/M phase cycle arrest in the NCI-H460 cell line.

Apigenin (APG) is a flavonoid widely distributed in fruits, vegetables, and herbs, with comprehensive pharmacological effects. In this paper, we report that APG can elicit a protective effect, which is comparable to those induced by gymnoside II/n-BuOH extracts of Bletilla striata, on SiO2-induced lung injury in vitro and in vivo. In vitro experiments showed that APG (25 µM) could restore the SiO2-decreased A549 cell viability and lower the apoptotic rate and the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in A549 cells treated with nm SiO2. Western blot results showed that APG (25 µM) could increase the level of Nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and its downstream proteins. In vivo experiments showed that APG (20 mg/kg) could potently alleviate the SiO2-elicited lung injury by enhancing the Nrf2 expression and thereby suppressing Bax/Bcl-2 pathway. The present study suggests that APG can significantly alleviate the SiO2-induced lung injury both in vitro and in vivo through, at least partially, activating Nrf2 expression.

RESUMO

Persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection will eventually lead to clinical problems, varying from verrucous lesions to malignancies like cervical cancer, oral cancer, anus cancer, and so on. To address the aforementioned problems, nanotechnology-based strategies have been applied to detect the virus, prevent the interaction between virus and mammalian cells, and treat the virus-infected cells, due mainly to the unique physicochemical properties of nanoparticles. In this regard, many nanotechnology-based chemotherapies, gene therapy, vaccination, or combination therapy have been developed. In this Minireview, we outline the pathogenesis of HPV infection and the recent advances in nanotechnology-based weapons that can be applied in combating HPV-associated diseases.

In the ongoing research on potent antitumor agents from the rhizomes of Asparagus cochinchinensis, seven undescribed steroidal saponins asparagusoside A-G (1-7), along with twenty known ones (8-27), were isolated and elucidated via analyzing their 1D, 2D NMR, mass spectroscopic data and chemical methods. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic effects against human large cell lung carcinoma cells (NCI-H460) in vitro. Among them, compounds 7, 9 and 27 showed more significant antitumor activities than the positive control cisplatin (11.56 µM) with IC50 values of 1.39, 3.04, and 2.25 µM, respectively. Further research about asparagusoside G (7) showed G0/G1 arrest in NCI-H460 cell line cycle and induced cell death by apoptosis in a dose­dependent way.

Glycochenodeoxycholate (GCDA), a toxic component in bile salts, is involved in carcinogenesis of gastrointestinal tumors. The objective of this research was to study the function of ERK1/2 in the GCDA-mediated survival and drug-resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HCCs). Firstly, extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) was detected extensively expressed in liver cancer cells, and silencing ERK1/2 by RNA interference could suppress GCDA-stimulated survival and promote apoptosis. Furthermore, phosphorylation of endogenous ERK1/2 could be potently stimulated by GCDA in combination with enhanced chemoresistance in QGY-7703 hepatocellular carcinoma cells. The GCDA-mediated proliferation and chemoresistance could be impaired by PD98059, which acted as an inhibitor to block the phosphorylation of ERK1/2. Mechanistically, PD98059 was able to potently suppress GCDA-stimulated nuclear aggregation of ERK1/2 and p-ERK1/2, upregulate pro-survival protein Mcl-1 and downregulate pro-apoptotic protein Bim. The results of this study indicated that disruption of ERK1/2 by blocking phosphorylation or nuclear translocation may put forward new methods for solving the problem of GCDA-related proliferation and drug-resistance in liver cancer treatment.

Zearalenone (ZEA) is an oestrogen-like mycotoxin produced by Fusarium fungi, which has a considerable impact on human and animal health and results in substantial economic losses worldwide. This study aimed to demonstrate the reproductive injury induced by ZEA in rodents. We conducted a rigorous meta-analysis of the related literature via PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. The scope of the study includes the following: development of reproductive organs, serum testosterone, oestradiol, and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels; parameters of Leydig cells; and parameters of semen. In total, 19 articles were reviewed. Compared with the control group, the increased relative epididymis weight, increased serum oestradiol level, and decreased LH levels in the prenatally exposed group were observed. In pubertal and adult rodents, the relative testicular weight, serum oestradiol level, Leydig cell number, and percentage of ST (+) Leydig cells decreased under ZEA exposure. In rodents at all ages, decreased serum testosterone level, sperm concentration, sperm motility rate, and increased serum deformity rate were observed in exposed groups compared with control groups. Although subgroup analysis failed to identify a clear dose-response relationship between ZEA exposure and reproductive system damage in male rodents, we still managed to confirm that zearalenone could decrease the serum testosterone level at the dosage of 50 mg/kg*day, 1.4 mg/kg*day, and 84 mg/kg*day, of prenatal, pubertal, and mature rodents respectively; pubertal zearalenone exposure impairs the quality and quantity of sperms of rodents at the dosage of 1.4 mg/kg*day and mature zearalenone exposure has the same effect at the dosage of 84 mg/kg*day. In conclusion, we found that ZEA exposure can cause considerable damage to the reproductive system of rodents of all ages. While the exact underlying mechanism of ZEA-induced toxicity in the reproductive system remains largely unknown, the theories of oestrogen-like effects and oxidative stress damage are promising.
