BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a malignant tumor of the male reproductive system, and its incidence has increased significantly in recent years. This study aimed to further identify candidate biomarkers with prognostic and diagnostic significance by integrating gene expression and DNA methylation data from PCa patients through association analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To this end, this paper proposes a sparse partial least squares regression algorithm based on hypergraph regularization (HR-SPLS) by integrating and clustering two kinds of data. Next, module 2, with the most significant weight, was selected for further analysis according to the weight of each module related to DNA methylation and mRNAs. Based on the DNA methylation sites in module 2, this paper uses multiple machine learning methods to construct a PCa diagnosis-related model of 10-DNA methylation sites. RESULTS: The results of Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the DNA methylation-related diagnostic model we constructed could diagnose PCa patients with high accuracy. Subsequently, based on the mRNAs in module 2, we constructed a prognostic model for 7-mRNAs (MYH11, ACTG2, DDR2, CDC42EP3, MARCKSL1, LMOD1, and MYLK) using multivariate Cox regression analysis. The prognostic model could predict the disease free survival of PCa patients with moderate to high accuracy (area under the curve (AUC) =0.761). In addition, Gene Set EnrichmentAnalysis (GSEA) and immune analysis indicated that the prognosis of patients in the risk group might be related to immune cell infiltration. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings may provide new methods and insights for identifying disease-related biomarkers by integrating DNA methylation and gene expression data.

SCOPE: Among patients with diabetes, who have modified nutritional behavior and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the influence of ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) on CVD remains unknown. The study aims to evaluate the association between UPF intake and the risk of CVD among individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and further examine the potential biological pathways linking the association. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study includes 5405 participants with T2D who provided at least one 24-h dietary recall from the UK Biobank study. In the fully adjusted models, a 10% increase in the proportion of UPFs is associated with higher hazards of overall CVD (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.10; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04, 1.15), coronary heart disease (HR: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.16), heart failure (HR: 1.14; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.25), but not stroke (HR: 1.01; 95% CI: 0.90, 1.12). Cystatin C, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), apolipoprotein A, C-reactive protein, and body mass index collectively explain 26.9% (12.8%, 48.5%) of the association between UPF intake and the risk of overall CVD. CONCLUSION: Higher UPF intakes are associated with increased hazards of CVD among individuals with T2D, and the association is partly mediated through worsening biomarkers of renal function, lipid metabolism, inflammation, and body weight.

Introduction: The potential role of the endometrial microbiota in the pathogenesis of endometrial polyps (EPs) warrants further investigation, given the current landscape of limited and inconclusive research findings. We aimed to explore the microecological characteristics of the uterine cavity in patients with EPs and investigate the potential of endometrial microbiota species as novel biomarkers for identifying EPs. Methods: Endometrial samples were collected from 225 patients who underwent hysteroscopies, of whom 167 had EPs, whereas 58 had non- hyperproliferative endometrium status. The endometrial microbiota was assessed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We characterized the endometrial microbiota and identified microbial biomarkers for predicting EPs. Results: The endometrial microbial diversity and composition were significantly different between the EP and control groups. Predictive functional analyses of the endometrial microbiota demonstrated significant alterations in pathways involved in sphingolipid metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and apoptosis between the two groups. Moreover, a classification model based on endometrial microbial ASV-based biomarkers along with the presence of abnormal uterine bleeding symptoms achieved powerful classification potential in identifying EPs in both the discovery and validation cohorts. Conclusion: Our study indicates a potential association between altered endometrial microbiota and EPs. Endometrial microbiota-based biomarkers may prove valuable for the diagnosis of EPs. Interleukin (IL)-33 is a key driver of T helper 2 (Th2) cell polarization. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress plays a role in the skewed T cell activation. The objective of this project is to elucidate the role of IL-33 derived from macrophages in inducing Th2 polarization in the airways. In this study, bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF) were collected from patients with asthma and healthy control subjects. Macrophages were isolated from the BALF by flow cytometry cell sorting. An asthmatic mouse model was established using the ovalbumin/alum protocol. The results showed that increased IL33 gene activity and ER stress-related molecules in BALF-derived M2a macrophages was observed in asthmatic patients. Levels of IL33 gene activity in M2a cells were positively correlated with levels of asthma response in asthma patients. Sensitization exacerbated the ER stress in the airway macrophages, which increased the expression of IL-33 in macrophages of airway in sensitized mice. Conditional ablation of Il33 or Perk or Atf4 genes in macrophages prevented induction of airway allergy in mice. In conclusion, asthma airway macrophages express high levels of IL-33 and at high ER stress status. Inhibition of IL-33 or ER stress in macrophages can effectively alleviate experimental asthma.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between circulating bile acids (BAs) and kidney function among patients with type 2 diabetes is unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations of circulating concentrations of BAs, particularly individual BA subtypes, with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we included 1234 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes who participated in an ongoing prospective study, the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort. Circulating primary and secondary unconjugated BAs and their taurine- or glycine-conjugates were measured using ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. CKD was defined as eGFR < 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2. Logistic regression model was used to compute odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: After adjusting for multiple testing, higher levels of total primary BAs (OR per standard deviation [SD] increment: 0.78; 95% CI: 0.65-0.92), cholate (OR per SD: 0.78; 95% CI: 0.66-0.92), chenodeoxycholate (OR per SD: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.69-0.96), glycocholate (OR per SD: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.68-0.96), and glycochenodeoxycholate (OR per SD: 0.82; 95% CI: 0.69-0.97) were associated with a lower likelihood of having CKD in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. No significant relationships between secondary BAs and odds of CKD were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings showed that higher concentrations of circulating unconjugated primary BAs and their glycine-conjugates, but not taurine-conjugates or secondary BAs, were associated with lower odds of having CKD in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a key determinant for the immunosuppressive and premetastatic niche for cancer progression after surgery resection. However, the precise mechanisms regulating Tregs function during surgical stress-facilitated cancer metastasis remain unknown. This study aims to unravel the mechanisms and explore potential strategies for preventing surgical stress-induced metastasis by targeting NEDD8. Using a surgical stress mouse model, we found that surgical stress results in the increased expression of NEDD8 in Tregs. NEDD8 depletion abrogates postoperative lung metastasis of colon cancer cells by inhibiting Treg immunosuppression and thereby partially recovering CD8+T cell and NK cell-mediated anti-tumor immunity. Furthermore, Treg mitophagy and mitochondrial respiration exacerbated in surgically stressed mice were attenuated by NEDD8 depletion. Our observations suggest that cancer progression may result from surgery-induced enhancement of NEDD8 expression and the subsequent immunosuppressive function of Tregs. More importantly, depleting or inhibiting NEDD8 can be an efficient strategy to reduce cancer metastasis after surgery resection by regulating the function of Tregs.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are both associated with an increased risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD). Little is known about the combined effects of multiple air pollutants on IHD risk, especially among individuals with T2D. We sought to assess the association of combined exposure to multiple air pollutants with incident IHD and examine the modification effect of T2D. METHODS: This study included 388780 individuals (20036 individuals with T2D) free of cardiovascular disease and cancer from the UK Biobank. The combined exposure to multiple air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM) with diameters ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5), PM with diameters between 2.5 and 10 µm (PMcoarse), PM with diameters ≤ 10 µm (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen dioxides (NOx), was assessed by creating a weighted air pollution score (APS), with a higher APS representing a higher level of air pollution exposure. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for incident IHD were assessed by multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS: During a median of 12.9 years of follow-up, 27333 incident IHD cases were observed. Compared with the lowest tertile of the APS, the multivariable-adjusted HR (95 % CI) of IHD risk for the highest tertile was 1.13 (1.03-1.23) among individuals with T2D, while the HR was 1.06 (1.03-1.10) among individuals without T2D. Additionally, the associations between APS and IHD incidence showed a linear relationship among individuals with T2D (nonlinearity: P = 0.37), whereas a non-linear relationship was observed among individuals without T2D (nonlinearity: P = 0.02). For the joint analysis, individuals in the highest tertile of APS and with T2D had a 54 % higher risk of IHD compared to individuals in the lowest tertile of APS and without T2D, with a significant additive interaction (Pinteraction < 0.01). The proportion of relative excess risk was 17 % due to the interaction in categorical analyses. CONCLUSIONS: The combined exposure to multiple air pollutants has been associated with an elevated risk of incident IHD, and the association is more pronounced among individuals with T2D.

Sepsis is a life-threatening systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by the host imbalanced response to infection. Lung injury is the most common complication of sepsis and one of the leading causes of patient death. Pyroptosis is a specific programmed cell death characterized by the release of inflammatory cytokines. Appropriate pyroptosis can reduce tissue damage and exert a protective effect against infection during sepsis. However, overactivated pyroptosis results in massive cell death, leading to septic shock, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, and even an increased risk of secondary infection. Recent studies suggest that pyroptosis can interact with and cross-regulate other types of cell death programs to establish a complex network of cell death, which participates in the occurrence and development of septic lung injury. This review will focus on the interactions between pyroptosis and other types of cell death, including apoptosis, necroptosis, PANoptosis, NETosis, autophagy, and ferroptosis, to summarize the role of pyroptosis in sepsis-induced lung injury, and will discuss the potential therapeutic strategies of targeting pyroptosis during sepsis treatment.

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Genome-wide association studies have identified nearly 20 IgA nephropathy susceptibility loci. However, most nonsynonymous coding variants, particularly ones that occur rarely or at a low frequency, have not been well investigated. The authors performed a chip-based association study of IgA nephropathy in 8529 patients with the disorder and 23,224 controls. They identified a rare variant in the gene encoding vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) that was significantly associated with a two-fold increased risk of IgA nephropathy, which was further confirmed by sequencing analysis. They also identified a novel common variant in PKD1L3 that was significantly associated with lower haptoglobin protein levels. This study, which was well-powered to detect low-frequency variants with moderate to large effect sizes, helps expand our understanding of the genetic basis of IgA nephropathy susceptibility. BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies have identified nearly 20 susceptibility loci for IgA nephropathy. However, most nonsynonymous coding variants, particularly those occurring rarely or at a low frequency, have not been well investigated. METHODS: We performed a three-stage exome chip-based association study of coding variants in 8529 patients with IgA nephropathy and 23,224 controls, all of Han Chinese ancestry. Sequencing analysis was conducted to investigate rare coding variants that were not covered by the exome chip. We used molecular dynamic simulation to characterize the effects of mutations of VEGFA on the protein's structure and function. We also explored the relationship between the identified variants and the risk of disease progression. RESULTS: We discovered a novel rare nonsynonymous risk variant in VEGFA (odds ratio, 1.97; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.61 to 2.41; P = 3.61×10 -11 ). Further sequencing of VEGFA revealed twice as many carriers of other rare variants in 2148 cases compared with 2732 controls. We also identified a common nonsynonymous risk variant in PKD1L3 (odds ratio, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.11 to 1.21; P = 1.43×10 -11 ), which was associated with lower haptoglobin protein levels. The rare VEGFA mutation could cause a conformational change and increase the binding affinity of VEGFA to its receptors. Furthermore, this variant was associated with the increased risk of kidney disease progression in IgA nephropathy (hazard ratio, 2.99; 95% CI, 1.09 to 8.21; P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Our study identified two novel risk variants for IgA nephropathy in VEGFA and PKD1L3 and helps expand our understanding of the genetic basis of IgA nephropathy susceptibility.

CONTEXT: Younger onset of type 2 diabetes (T2D) was associated with higher risks of vascular complications and mortality. OBJECTIVE: To prospectively assess risk profiles for incident T2D stratified by age at onset. METHODS: A total of 471 269 participants free of T2D at baseline were included from the UK Biobank. Approximately 70 clinical, lipid, lipoprotein, inflammatory, and metabolic markers, and genetic risk scores (GRSs) were analyzed. Stratified Cox proportional-hazards regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for T2D with age of diagnosis divided into 4 groups (≤50.0, 50.1-60.0, 60.1-70.0, and >70.0 years). RESULTS: During 11 years of follow-up, 15 805 incident T2D were identified. Among clinical risk factors, obesity had the highest HR at any age, ranging from 13.16 (95% CI, 9.67-17.91) for 50.0 years and younger to 4.13 (3.78-4.51) for older than 70.0 years. Other risks associated with T2D onset at age 50.0 years and younger included dyslipidemia (3.50, 2.91-4.20), hypertension (3.21, 2.71-3.80), cardiovascular disease (2.87, 2.13-3.87), parental history of diabetes (2.42, 2.04-2.86), education lower than college (1.89, 1.57-2.27), physical inactivity (1.73, 1.43-2.10), smoking (1.38, 1.13-1.68), several lipoprotein particles, inflammatory markers, liver enzymes, fatty acids, amino acids, as well as GRS. Associations of most risk factors and biomarkers were markedly attenuated with increasing age at onset (P interaction <.05), and some were not significant for onset at age older than 70.0 years, such as smoking, systolic blood pressure, and apolipoprotein B. CONCLUSION: Most risk factors or biomarkers had stronger relative risks for T2D at younger ages, which emphasizes the necessity of promoting primary prevention among younger individuals. Moreover, obesity should be prioritized.

OBJECTIVE: We present a case of spontaneous abdominal wall endometriosis presenting as a painless nodular mass in a woman with no prior history of abdominal surgery. CASE REPORT: Abdominal wall endometriosis (AWE) is an uncommon form of endometriosis, usually arising due to a past history of cesarean section or abdominal hysterectomy. However, in rare cases, abdominal wall endometriosis can arise in women with no prior history of abdominal surgery. A 48-year-old woman presented to our obstetrics and gynecology clinic with a painless nodular mass in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. Abdominal wall ultrasound showed a hypoechoic heterogenous mass under the skin. Wide surgical resection of the mass was conducted and post-operative histopathological report revealed abdominal wall endometriosis. CONCLUSION: Spontaneous abdominal wall endometriosis is an uncommon pathologic condition in which accurate diagnosis is difficult. As an increasing number of obstetrical and gynecological procedures are conducted worldwide, surgeons should keep this clinical entity in the differential diagnosis of any abdominal mass in reproductive-aged females regardless of their past surgical history.

IL-1ß can exit the cytosol as an exosomal cargo following inflammasome activation in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) in a Gasdermin D (GSDMD)-dependent manner. The mechanistic connection linking inflammasome activation and the biogenesis of exosomes has so far remained largely elusive. Here, we report the Ras GTPase-activating-like protein IQGAP1 functions as an adaptor, bridging GSDMD to the endosomal sorting complexes required for transport (ESCRT) machinery to promote the biogenesis of pro-IL-1ß-containing exosomes in response to NLPR3 inflammasome activation. We identified IQGAP1 as a GSDMD-interacting protein through a non-biased proteomic analysis. Functional investigation indicated the IQGAP1-GSDMD interaction is required for LPS and ATP-induced exosome release. Further analysis revealed that IQGAP1 serves as an adaptor which bridges GSDMD and associated IL-1ß complex to Tsg101, a component of the ESCRT complex, and enables the packaging of GSDMD and IL-1ß into exosomes. Importantly, this process is dependent on an LPS-induced increase in GTP-bound CDC42, a small GTPase known to activate IQGAP1. Taken together, this study reveals IQGAP1 as a link between inflammasome activation and GSDMD-dependent, ESCRT-mediated exosomal release of IL-1ß.

In this study, polypyrrole (Ppy) nanoparticles enveloping a 3D frame of sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SP) surface are constructed, which enhance the surface modulus and hardness of the sulfonated layer by forming a cooperative structure of simulated reinforced concrete and exhibit a superior photothermal effect. Ppy-coated SP could quickly accumulate heat on the surface by responding to 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light, thereby killing bacteria, and destroying biofilms. Under NIR stimulation, the phagocytosis and M1 activation of macrophages cultured on Ppy-coated SP are enhanced by activating complement 3 and its receptor, CD11b. Phagocytosis and M1 activation are impaired along with abolishment of NIR stimulation in the Ppy-coated SP group, which is favorable for tissue repair. Ppy-coated SP promotes Collagen-I, vascular endothelial growth factor, connective tissue growth factor, and α-actin (Acta2) expression by inducing M2 polarization owing to its higher surface modulus. Overall, Ppy-coated SP with enhanced mechanical properties could be a good candidate for clinical percutaneous implants through on-off phagocytosis and switchable macrophage activation stimulated with NIR.

The novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) epidemic continues to be a global public crisis affecting human health. Many research groups are developing different types of vaccines to suppress the spread of SARS-CoV-2, and some vaccines have entered phase III clinical trials and have been rapidly implemented. Whether multiple antigen matches are necessary to induce a better immune response remains unclear. To address this question, this study tested the immunogenicity and protective effects of a SARS-CoV-2 recombinant S and N peptide vaccine in the Syrian golden hamster model. This experiment was based on two immunization methods: intradermal and intramuscular administration. Immunized hamsters were challenged with live SARS-CoV-2 14 days after booster immunization. Clinical symptoms were observed daily, and the antibody titer and viral load in each tissue were detected. The results showed that immunization of golden hamsters with the SARS-CoV-2 structural protein S alone or in combination with the N protein through different routes induced antibody responses, whereas immunization with the N protein alone did not. However, although the immunized hamsters exhibited partial alleviation of clinical symptoms when challenged with the virus, neither vaccine effectively inhibited the proliferation and replication of the challenging virus. In addition, the pathological damage in the immunized hamsters was similar to that in the control hamsters. Interestingly, the neutralizing antibody levels of all groups including immunized and nonimmunized animals increased significantly after viral challenge. In conclusion, the immune response induced by the experimental S and N polypeptide vaccines had no significant ability to prevent viral infection and pathogenicity in golden hamsters.

Dysfunction of immune regulation plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of many immune disorders in the body. The underlying mechanism is still not completely understood. Environmental pollution contributes to immune de-regulation. 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol (MNP) is one of the major environmental pollutants. This study aims to investigate the role of MNP in compromising immune regulatory functions in the intestine. A food allergy (FA) mouse model was established using ovalbumin (OVA) as the specific antigen. The activities of regulatory T cells in the mouse intestine were evaluated by flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We found that MNP reduced the CD4+ Foxp3+ Treg frequency, increased Th17 cells, and converted Tregs to Th17 cells in the intestine. MNP induced the expression of IL-6 in regulatory T cells (Tregs). Estrogen receptor (ER) mediated the effects of MNP on promoting IL-6 expression in Tregs. The IL-6 in synergy with transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß to convert Tregs to Th17 cells. The concomitant exposure of MNP and OVA induced FA like response in mice. Modulation of the ER-STAT3-IL-6 signal pathway attenuated mouse FA response. In summary, MNP, an environmental pollutant, acts as an immunoadjuvant for developing FA. By activation of the estrogen receptor, MNP induces Tregs to express IL-6. IL-6 in synergy with TGF-ß converts Tregs to Th17 cells.

The mechanism of the recovery of immune inflammation in the intestine remains to be investigated. The calcitonin-related protein (CGRP; neuropeptide) has immune regulatory capacity. We observed that lower levels of CGRP were found in the colon biopsies of UC patients. CGRP were negatively correlated to TNF-α, IL-1ß and IFN-γ in biopsy samples. The levels of TGF-ß were lower in the UC group than that of the normal control (NC) group, which were positively correlated with the CGRP levels. Blocking CGRP significantly delayed recovery from colitis inflammation. CGRP induced the TGF-ß-expressing CD4+ Tim4+ macrophages in the intestine. CD4+ Tim4+ macrophages demonstrated immune regulatory function in suppressing proliferation of isolated T cells of colitis and induced apoptosis of T cells. Ablation of the Tgfb1 expression in macrophages resulted in a significant delay in recovery of inflammation in colitis, which was rescued by reconstitution of the CD4+ Tim4+ macrophages in mice.

Circulating cytokines and chemokines play critical roles in hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Here, we explored the effects of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory effector molecules on HBV progression, e antigen seroconversion, and liver function. Our results showed that circulating interleukin (IL)-17 may be helpful in HBV spontaneous clearance [odds ratio (OR) = 1.468, 95%confidence interval (CI) = 1.080-1.995, P = 0.014] and protective against HBV-related hepatoma development (OR = 0.933, 95%CI = 0.910-0.957, P < 0.001). IL-1ß negatively affected HBV clearance (OR = 0.052, 95%CI = 0.005-0.534, P = 0.013). In patients with chronic hepatitis B, interferon-γ-inducible protein-10 (IP-10) levels significantly increased in the group of abnormal liver function (P = 0.006). Furthermore, positive correlations of IP-10 with alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels were observed (r s = 0.546 and 0.644, respectively; P < 0.001). In conclusion, inflammatory cytokines and chemokines may be a "double-edged sword" for HBV clearance and progression. Further exploration of the roles of IL-17, IL-1ß, and IP-10 in chronic HBV infection is needed.

Due to viral envelope glycoprotein D binding to cellular membrane HVEM receptor, HSV-1 can infect certain dendritic cells, which becomes an event in the viral strategy to interfere with the host's immune system. We previously generated the HSV-1 mutant strain M6, which produced an attenuated phenotype in mice and rhesus monkeys. The attenuated M6 strain was used to investigate how HSV-1 infection of dendritic cells interferes with both innate and adaptive immunity. Our study showed that dendritic cells membrane HVEM receptors could mediate infection of the wild-type strain and attenuated M6 strain and that dendritic cells infected by both viruses in local tissues of animals exhibited changes in transcriptional profiles associated with innate immune and inflammatory responses. The infection of pDCs and cDCs by the two strains promoted cell differentiation to the CD103+ phenotype, but varied transcriptional profiles were observed, implying a strategy that the HSV-1 wild-type strain interferes with antiviral immunity, probably due to viral modification of the immunological phenotype of dendritic cells during processing and presentation of antigen to T cells, leading to a series of deviations in immune responses, ultimately generating the deficient immune phenotype observed in infected individuals in the clinical.

Colorectal carcinoma is the leading cause of cancer-related death. Previously we have shown that tumor suppressor single immunoglobulin interleukin-1-related receptor (SIGIRR) is frequently inactivated in human colorectal cancer by the increased expression of a novel SIGIRR isoform (SIGIRRΔE8). SIGIRRΔE8 showed increased retention in the cytoplasm and loss of complex glycan modification compared to the full-length SIGIRR. Now we found that the arginine residues located in the C-terminus of SIGIRRΔE8 serve as an endoplasmic reticulum retention signal and are required for resident protein ribophorin 1 (RPN1) interaction. In addition, we found that SIGIRRΔE8 exerts a direct impact on cell metabolism through interaction with the adenosine triphosphate synthase in the colorectal cancer cells. SIGIRRΔE8 expression promoted the metabolic shift through upregulation of mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway and dysregulation of mitochondrial function to promote survival and proliferation of colon cancer cells in xenograft model.

The aim of this study was to describe radiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of enzootic nasal tumors in goats infected with enzootic nasal tumor viruses. Five of six goats with a mean age of 2 years, showed clinical signs of respiratory disease. Head radiographs showed increased density of the unilateral or bilateral nasal cavity in four goats, and a CT scan showed that the space-occupying lesion of the nasal cavity originated from the ethmoid bone and was enhanced homogeneously postcontrast in all goats. The nasal concha was destroyed and the paranasal sinus mucosa was thickened and filled with fluid in some goats. On MRI, the mass exhibited equal or slightly higher signal intensity on T2 weighted images, equal signal intensity on T1 weighted images, a high signal on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images and heterogeneous enhancement postcontrast. After dissection, histopathological examination of the mass and virus genome detection of the nasal secretions confirmed that the intranasal mass was a low-grade adenocarcinoma and that the goats were infected with enzootic nasal tumor virus type 2. In conclusion, CT and MRI have high diagnostic values for enzootic nasal tumors because they match the postmortem findings and are more accurate than radiography.
