Asparagus, a vital economic contributor, is a well-liked vegetable grown around the globe, and some secondary metabolites in its spear are beneficial to human health. Asparagus spears possess a significant quantity of nutrients and phytochemicals; however, the difference in these chemical compositions among various varieties has not been sufficiently studied. This work aimed to detect the chemical compositions of 30 varieties of asparagus and to assess them by principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that the contents of these chemical compositions varied in varieties. Selenium (Se, 1.12-2.9 µg/100 g dry-weight [DW]) was abundant in asparagus, with an average dry matter content of 8.25%. Free amino acids (5.60-9.98 g/100 g DW) and polyphenols (6.34-8.67 mg/g DW) were both present in high amounts, along with flavonoids (4.218-8.22 mg/g DW) and protodioscin (0.44-1.96 mg/g DW). Correlation analysis, PCA, and hierarchical cluster analysis were used to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of asparagus. Atlas, Appolo, Jinggang 111, Jingke 2, and WS-1 were the top five varieties with comprehensive scores. This study provided valuable data for the breeding, quality improvement, processing, and utilization of asparagus varieties in the future.

Monitoring etoposide is important due to its wide usage in anti-tumor therapy; however, the commonly used HPLC method is expensive and often requires complicated extraction and detection procedures. Electrochemical analysis has great application prospects because of its rapid response and high specificity, sensitivity, and efficiency with low cost and high convenience. In this study, we constructed a nanoporous gold (NPG)-modified GCE for the detection of etoposide. The electrochemical oxidation of etoposide by NPG caused a sensitive current peak at +0.27 V with good reproductivity in 50 mM of phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The relationship between etoposide concentration and peak current was linear in the range between 0.1 and 20 µM and between 20 and 150 µM, with a detection sensitivity of 681.8 µA mM-1 cm-2 and 197.2 µA mM-1 cm-2, respectively, and a limit of detection (LOD) reaching 20 nM. The electrode had a good anti-interference ability to several common anions and cations. Spiked recovery tests in serum, urine, and fermentation broth verified the excellent performance of the sensor in terms of sensitivity, reproducibility, and specificity. This may provide a promising tool for the detection of etoposide in biological samples.

Accurate cancer survival prediction is crucial for oncologists to determine therapeutic plan, which directly influences the treatment efficacy and survival outcome of patient. Recently, multimodal fusion-based prognostic methods have demonstrated effectiveness for survival prediction by fusing diverse cancer-related data from different medical modalities, e.g., pathological images and genomic data. However, these works still face significant challenges. First, most approaches attempt multimodal fusion by simple one-shot fusion strategy, which is insufficient to explore complex interactions underlying in highly disparate multimodal data. Second, current methods for investigating multimodal interactions face the capability-efficiency dilemma, which is the difficult balance between powerful modeling capability and applicable computational efficiency, thus impeding effective multimodal fusion. In this study, to encounter these challenges, we propose an innovative multi-shot interactive fusion method named MIF for precise survival prediction by utilizing pathological and genomic data. Particularly, a novel multi-shot fusion framework is introduced to promote multimodal fusion by decomposing it into successive fusing stages, thus delicately integrating modalities in a progressive way. Moreover, to address the capacity-efficiency dilemma, various affinity-based interactive modules are introduced to synergize the multi-shot framework. Specifically, by harnessing comprehensive affinity information as guidance for mining interactions, the proposed interactive modules can efficiently generate low-dimensional discriminative multimodal representations. Extensive experiments on different cancer datasets unravel that our method not only successfully achieves state-of-the-art performance by performing effective multimodal fusion, but also possesses high computational efficiency compared to existing survival prediction methods.

Accurate breast cancer prognosis prediction can help clinicians to develop appropriate treatment plans and improve life quality for patients. Recent prognostic prediction studies suggest that fusing multi-modal data, e.g., genomic data and pathological images, plays a crucial role in improving predictive performance. Despite promising results of existing approaches, there remain challenges in effective multi-modal fusion. First, albeit a powerful fusion technique, Kronecker product produces high-dimensional quadratic expansion of features that may result in high computational cost and overfitting risk, thereby limiting its performance and applicability in cancer prognosis prediction. Second, most existing methods put more attention on learning cross-modality relations between different modalities, ignoring modality-specific relations that are complementary to cross-modality relations and beneficial for cancer prognosis prediction. To address these challenges, in this study we propose a novel attention-based multi-modal network to accurately predict breast cancer prognosis, which efficiently models both modality-specific and cross-modality relations without bringing in high-dimensional features. Specifically, two intra-modality self-attentional modules and an inter-modality cross-attentional module, accompanied by latent space transformation of channel affinity matrix, are developed to successfully capture modality-specific and cross-modality relations for efficient integration of genomic data and pathological images, respectively. Moreover, we design an adaptive fusion block to take full advantage of both modality-specific and cross-modality relations. Comprehensive experiment demonstrates that our method can effectively boost prognosis prediction performance of breast cancer and compare favorably with the state-of-the-art methods.

Indoor gaseous formaldehyde is the main environmental pollutant that can cause fatal threats to human health. A number of physical and chemical methods have been developed to tackle this issue. However, the existing methods are still unsatisfactory to meet the requirement of sustainable development owing to the flaws of low efficiency and reversible or second pollution. Herein, a chemical method based on a nucleophilic reaction between hydrazine and aldehyde that generates the only by-product of H2O is designed for the removal of formaldehyde. 1-Pyrenebutyric hydrazide was synthesized by a simple esterification reaction and then self-assembled on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with a large surface area by forming π-π stacking to obtain a composite for chemical removal of gaseous formaldehyde under ambient conditions. In a practical test, the formaldehyde removal rate could reach 91% of the theoretical value, which meets the requirement for commercial formaldehyde removal applications. After 10 times recycling, the formaldehyde removal rate still remains as high as 85%. Moreover, the composite could be regenerated in weak acidic media, which greatly reduce the manufacturing cost in practical applications.

BACKGROUND: Anti-ß2GP1 (ß2-glycoprotein 1) antibodies are the primary pathogenic antibody to promote thrombosis in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), yet the underlying mechanism remains obscure. We aimed to explore the intracellular pathway that mediated platelet activation. METHODS: Platelets were isolated from patients with APS and subjected to RNA sequencing. Platelet aggregation, the release of platelet granules, platelet spreading, and clot retraction were detected to evaluate platelet activation. We purified anti-ß2GP1 antibodies from patients with APS and the total IgG from healthy donors to stimulate platelets with/without FcγRIIA (Fcγ receptor IIA) blocking antibody or Akt (protein kinase B) inhibitor. Platelet-specific Sin1 (stress-activated protein kinase-interacting protein) deficiency mice were established. The thrombus model of inferior vena cava flow restriction, ferric chloride-induced carotid injury model, and laser-induced vessel wall injury in cremaster arterioles model were constructed after administration of anti-ß2GP1 antibodies. RESULTS: Combined RNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis suggested that APS platelets exhibited increased levels of mRNA associated with platelet activation, which was in line with the hyperactivation of APS platelets in response to stimuli. Platelet activation in APS platelets was accompanied by upregulation of the mTORC2 (mammalian target of the rapamycin complex 2)/Akt pathway and increased levels of SIN1 phosphorylation at threonine 86. Anti-ß2GP1 antibody derived from patients with APS enhanced platelet activation and upregulated the mTORC2/Akt pathway. Moreover, the Akt inhibitor weakened the potentiating effect of the anti-ß2GP1 antibody on platelet activation. Notably, Sin1 deficiency suppresses anti-ß2GP1 antibody-enhanced platelet activation in vitro and thrombosis in all 3 models. CONCLUSIONS: This study elucidated the novel mechanism involving the mTORC2/Akt pathway, which mediates the promotion of platelet activation and induction of thrombosis by the anti-ß2GP1 antibody. The findings suggest that SIN1 may be a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of APS.

BACKGROUND: Glioma stem cells (GSCs) are responsible for glioma recurrence and drug resistance, yet the mechanisms underlying their maintenance remains unclear. This study aimed to identify enhancer-controlled genes involved in GSCs maintenance and elucidate the mechanisms underlying their regulation. METHODS: We analyzed RNA-seq data and H3K27ac ChIP-seq data from GSE119776 to identify differentially expressed genes and enhancers, respectively. Gene Ontology analysis was performed for functional enrichment. Transcription factors were predicted using the Toolkit for Cistrome Data Browser. Prognostic analysis and gene expression correlation was conducted using the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) data. Two GSC cell lines, GSC-A172 and GSC-U138MG, were isolated from A172 and U138MG cell lines. qRT-PCR was used to detect gene transcription levels. ChIP-qPCR was used to detect H3K27ac of enhancers, and binding of E2F4 to target gene enhancers. Western blot was used to analyze protein levels of p-ATR and γH2AX. Sphere formation, limiting dilution and cell growth assays were used to analyze GSCs growth and self-renewal. RESULTS: We found that upregulated genes in GSCs were associated with ataxia-telangiectasia-mutated-and-Rad3-related kinase (ATR) pathway activation, and that seven enhancer-controlled genes related to ATR pathway activation (LIN9, MCM8, CEP72, POLA1, DBF4, NDE1, and CDKN2C) were identified. Expression of these genes corresponded to poor prognosis in glioma patients. E2F4 was identified as a transcription factor that regulates enhancer-controlled genes related to the ATR pathway activation, with MCM8 having the highest hazard ratio among genes positively correlated with E2F4 expression. E2F4 bound to MCM8 enhancers to promote its transcription. Overexpression of MCM8 partially restored the inhibition of GSCs self-renewal, cell growth, and the ATR pathway activation caused by E2F4 knockdown. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that E2F4-mediated enhancer activation of MCM8 promotes the ATR pathway activation and GSCs characteristics. These findings offer promising targets for the development of new therapies for gliomas.

Zero-valent sulfur is accumulated in the cytoplasm of certain sulfur-oxidizing or reducing microorganisms. When these microorganisms are unable to metabolize zero-valent sulfur, they produce sulfur globules that mainly consist of octasulfur (S8), a common species of elemental sulfur. The intracellular zero-valent sulfur was easily transferred to other bacteria and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae for metabolism. After eliminating all known potential mechanisms of zero-valent sulfur transfer between cells, we hypothesized and tested whether S8 was directly transferred. S8 was shown to be soluble and enriched in membrane lipids. The transfer of S8 molecules occurred between live cells, inactivated cells, and liposomes via physical contact. Low-molecular thiols, such as glutathione, reacted with S8 in the cell membranes to produce glutathione persulfide that was soluble in the cytoplasm. In the recipient cells, glutathione persulfide was either metabolized by enzymes or spontaneously reacted with another glutathione to produce hydrogen sulfide and glutathione disulfide. The new mechanism of zero-valent sulfur transfer as membrane lipid-soluble S8 molecules is common among tested microorganisms and may also occur in the environment for microorganisms to share and use zero-valent sulfur.

BACKGROUND: This prospective randomized controlled study was designed to evaluate the effect of S-ketamine with sufentanil given intraoperatively and postoperatively on recovery of gastrointestinal (GI) function and postoperative pain in gynecological patients undergoing open abdomen surgery. METHODS: One hundred gynecological patients undergoing open abdomen surgery were randomized into an S-ketamine group (group S) or placebo group (0.9% saline; group C). Anesthesia was maintained with S-ketamine, sevoflurane, and remifentanil-propofol target-controlled infusion in group S and with sevoflurane and remifentanil-propofol target-controlled infusion in group C. All patients were connected to patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA) pump at the end of the surgery with sufentanil, ketorolac tromethamine, and tropisetron in group C and additional S-ketamine in group S. The primary outcome was the time of first postoperative flatus, and the secondary outcome was postoperative pain score of patients. Postoperative sufentanil consumption within the first postoperative 24 h and adverse events such as nausea and vomiting were recorded. RESULTS: The time of first postoperative flatus in group S was significantly shorter (mean ± SD, 50.3 ± 13.5 h) than that in group C (mean ± SD, 56.5 ± 14.3 h, p = 0.042). The patient's visual analog scale (VAS) pain score 24 h after surgery at rest was significantly lower in group S than in group C (p = 0.032). There were no differences in sufentanil consumption within the first postoperative 24 h, postoperative complications related to PCIA between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: S-ketamine accelerated postoperative GI recovery and reduced 24 h postoperative pain in patients undergoing open gynecological surgery. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ChiCTR2200055180. Bacillus licheniformis MW3 degrades bird feathers. Feather keratin is rich in cysteine, which is metabolized to produce hazardous sulfide and sulfane sulfur. A challenge to B. licheniformis MW3 growing on feathers is to detoxify them. Here we identified a gene cluster in B. licheniformis MW3 to deal with these toxicity. The cluster contains 11 genes: the first gene yrkD encodes a repressor, the 8th and 9th genes nreB and nreC encode a two-component regulatory system, and the 10th and 11th genes encode sulfide: quinone reductase (SQR) and persulfide oxygenase (PDO). SQR and PDO collectively oxidize sulfide and sulfane sulfur to sulfite. YrkD sensed sulfane sulfur to derepress the 11 genes. The NreBC system sensed sulfide and further amplified the transcription of sqr and pdo. The two regulatory systems synergistically controlled the expression of the gene cluster, which was required for the bacterium to grow on feather. The findings highlight the necessity of removing sulfide and sulfane sulfur during feather degradation and may help with bioremediation of feather waste and sulfide pollution.

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of balloon dilation in ureteral stricture and to analyze the risk factors for the failure of balloon dilation, which will hopefully provide some reference for clinicians to develop treatment plans. We retrospectively analyzed 196 patients who underwent balloon dilation between January 2012 and August 2022, 127 of whom had complete baseline and follow-up data. General clinical data, perioperative data, balloon parameters at the time of surgery, and follow-up results were collected from the patients. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed for the risk factors for surgical failure in patients undergoing balloon dilatation. The success rates of balloon dilatation (n = 30) and balloon dilatation combined with endoureterotomy (n = 37) for lower ureteral stricture at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year were 81.08%, 78.38%, and 78.38% and 90%, 90%, and 86.67%, respectively. The success rates of balloon dilation at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year in patients with recurrent upper ureteral stricture after pyeloplasty (n = 15) and primary treatment (n = 30) were 73.33%, 60%, and 53.33% and 80%, 80%, and 73.33%, respectively. The success rates of surgery at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year for patients with recurrence of lower ureteral stricture after ureteral reimplantation or endoureterotomy (n = 4) and primary treatment with balloon dilatation (n = 34) were 75%, 75%, and 75% and 85.29%, 79.41%, and 79.41%, respectively. Multivariate analysis of the failure of balloon dilation showed that balloon circumference and multiple ureteral strictures were risk factors for balloon dilation failure (OR = 0.143, 95% CI: 0.023-0.895, p = 0.038; OR = 1.221, 95% CI: 1.002-1.491, p = 0.05). Balloon dilation combined with endoureterotomy in lower ureteral stricture had a higher success rate than balloon dilation alone. The success rate of balloon dilation in the primary treatment of the upper and lower ureter was higher than that of balloon dilation in the secondary treatment after failed repair surgery. Balloon circumference and multiple ureteral strictures are risk factors for balloon dilation failure.

Background: Adult-onset still's disease (AOSD) and lymphoma are the common causes of fever of unknown origin (FUO) and show some similar clinical symptoms. This study aimed to establish a reliable and easy-to-used scoring model based on clinical information, laboratory characteristics and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computer tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) images for the differential diagnosis of these two diseases. Methods: A development cohort including 70 AOSD and 37 lymphoma patients was used to establish a scoring model based on the features of PET/CT images. The scoring model was then validated in a validation cohort of 15 AOSD and 12 lymphoma patients. The features of involved bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes, and other organs or tissues displayed on PET/CT images were compared. Multiple logistics regression and decision tree analysis were used to establish the scoring model. Results: Four features that could significantly differentiate these two diseases were selected to establish a scoring model discriminating AOSD from lymphoma, including (I) white blood cell (WBC) count ≤10×109/L (1 point); (II) ferritin ≤ upper limit of normal (ULN) (1 point); (III) no abnormal bone marrow metabolism (1 point); (IV) total lesion glycolysistotal (TLGtotal) >9.0 (1 point). After decision tree analysis, it showed that a score ≤1 indicates AOSD. A score ≥3 strongly suggested lymphoma, with a sensitivity of 81.1% and specificity of 90.0% in the development cohort, and a sensitivity of 58.3% and specificity of 100% in the validation cohort. Conclusions: Our scoring model showed good diagnosis performance in distinguishing AOSD from lymphoma.

Severe coloboma of ocular malignant neoplasms post-resection poses a reconstructive challenge to surgeons. To compare the practicability, manipulability and outcomes of temporal (myocutaneous) flaps (TFs), forehead (supratrochlear artery/supraorbital artery) flaps (FFs) and buccal (facial artery) flaps (BFs) for periorbital defects reconstruction, a retrospective case series was conducted and evaluated between March 2014 and March 2021. Patient demographics and clinical parameters including age, gender, pathological diagnosis, operative methods, flap selection, operation time, aesthetic satisfaction and follow-up period were collected. The differences in complications were compared and assessed of the three flaps, including flap survival, venous congestion and donor site healing. Totally, 68 patients who underwent periorbital reconstructive operations because of common ocular malignant tumours were reviewed in this study. As for aesthetic satisfaction, a score more than "moderately dissatisfied" was obtained in 21 patients with TFs (95.5%), and of which the scores in FFs group were 12 cases (60%) and 16 cases with BFs reconstruction (61.5%) (P < .05). Severe microvascular complications underwent re-exploration operation occurred in one patient with FFs (1.5%) (P > .05). Notable flap necrosis was observed in two patients with BFs repair (2.9%) and in one case with FFs repair (1.5%), with no statistical difference between the three flap selections (P > .05). Moderate venous congestion occurred in one patient with TFs (1.5%), which was fully meliorated non-surgically. The three familiar facial island flaps are considered as minor trauma and time-saving process for reconstructing the extensive periorbital defects with comparable ranks of complications.

PURPOSE: To determine age-and sex-related changes in periocular morphology in Caucasians using a standardized protocol. METHODS: Healthy Caucasian volunteers aged 18-35 and 60-90 years old were recruited from the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital, Cologne, between October 2018 and May 2020. Volunteers with facial asymmetry, facial deformities, history of facial trauma, facial surgery, botox injection, eyelid ptosis, strabismus, or nystagmus, were excluded. Standardized three-dimensional facial photos of 68 young volunteers and 73 old volunteers were taken in this clinical practice. Position changes of endocanthion, pupil center, and exocanthion were analyzed in different age and gender groups, including palpebral fissure width (PFW): distance between endocanthions (En-En), pupil centers (Pu-Pu), exocanthions (Ex-Ex), endocanthion and nasion (En-Na), pupil center and nasion (Pu-Na), exocanthion and nasion (Ex-Na), endocanthion and pupil center (Pu-En), exocanthion and pupil center (Pu-Ex), and palpebral fissure inclination (PFI); angle of endocanthions to nasion (En-Na-En), pupils to nasion (Pu-Na-Pu), exocanthions to nasion (Ex-Na-Ex); endocanthion inclination (EnI), and exocanthion inclination (ExI). RESULTS: PFW, En-En, Ex-Na, Pu-Ex, PFI, ExI, and Ex-Na-Ex were significantly different between the young and old groups (p ≤ 0.004). There were sex-related differences in PFW, Ex-Ex, En-Na, Pu-Na, Ex-Na, Pu-En, PFI, and EnI between both groups (p ≤ 0.041). CONCLUSION: The position change of the pupil is minimal relative to age; it is preferred to establish the reference plane to describe periocular changes. The endocanthion tends to move temporally and inferiorly, while the exocanthion tends to shift nasally and inferiorly with age.

BACKGROUND: The blockade of programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) and recombinant human endostatin can be used for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its metastasis. This study aims to explore the therapeutically potential of PD-1 blockade plus Endostar in brain metastasis of NSCLC. METHODS: The mouse brain metastases model was established using Lewis lung carcinoma luciferase (LLC-Luc) and PC-9-Luc cells. Tumor metastasis in the brain and tumor burden were analyzed by using bioluminescence imaging (BLI), qRT-PCR and ELISA which were used to determine the mRNA and protein levels of biomarkers in tumor tissues. Immunohistochemical staining was used to determine the expression and location of CD31 in tumor tissues in the brain. RESULTS: Treatment with anti-PD-1 and Endostar suppressed tumor metastasis in the brain and prolonged overall survival rate in LLC-Luc and PC-9-Luc brain metastases mouse model. In addition, treatment with anti-PD-1 and Endostar inhibited the expressions of CD31 and VEGF in tumor tissues in the brain. Furthermore, treatment with anti-PD- 1 and Endostar significantly suppressed the levels of IL1ß, IFNγ, and TGFß in the tumor tissues. CONCLUSION: The combination of PD-1 blockade and endostar suppressed brain metastases of NSCLC.

Podophyllotoxin (PTOX) is naturally produced by the plant Podophyllum species. Some of its derivatives are anticancer drugs, which are produced mainly by using chemical semi-synthesis methods. Recombinant bacteria have great potential in large-scale production of the derivatives of PTOX. In addition to introducing the correct enzymes, the transportation of PTOX into the cells is an important factor, which limits its modification in the bacteria. Here, we improved the cellular uptake of PTOX into Escherichia coli with the help of the zero-valent sulfur transporter YedE1E2 in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). CTAB promoted the uptake of PTOX, but induced the production of reactive oxygen species. A protein complex (YedE1E2) of YedE1 and YedE2 enabled E. coli cells to resist CTAB by reducing reactive oxygen species, and YedE1E2 was a hypothetical transporter. Further investigation showed that YedE1E2 facilitated the uptake of extracellular zero-valent sulfur across the cytoplasmic membrane and the formation of glutathione persulfide (GSSH) inside the cells. The increased GSSH minimized oxidative stress. Our results indicate that YedE1E2 is a zero-valent sulfur transporter and it also facilitates CTAB-assisted uptake of PTOX by recombinant bacteria.

Abstract Objectives Cardiac involvement is one of the most serious complications of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) that indicates poor prognosis. However, there is a lack of effective biomarkers for the identification of cardiac involvement and the prediction of prognosis in IIM. Here, we aimed to explore the value of different cardiac biomarkers in IIM patients. Methods A total of 142 IIM patients in the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, Ruijin Hospital from July 2019 to October 2022 were included in this study. The clinical characteristics, laboratory tests, treatments and prognosis were recorded. The disease activity was assessed according to the core set measures. The correlations of the serum cardiac biomarkers levels with disease activity were analyzed by the Spearman correlation test. Risk factors for cardiac involvement were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results Higher high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) levels were associated with cardiac involvement (n = 41) in IIM patients [adjusted OR 7.810 (95% CI: 1.962-31.097); p = 0.004], independent of other serum cardiac biomarkers. The abnormal hs-cTnI had the highest AUC for distinguishing of cardiac involvement in IIM patients (AUC = 0.848, 95% CI: 0.772,0.924; p < 0.001). Besides, we found that high serum levels of hs-cTnI were significantly correlated with disease activity. Moreover, patients with higher serum levels of hs-cTnI tended to suffer from poor prognosis. Conclusions Serum hs-cTnI testing may play a role in screening for cardiac involvement in IIM patients. Abnormal levels of serum hs-cTnI were associated with increased disease activity and poor prognosis. Key Points Among all the cardiac biomarkers, the serum levels of hs-cTnI were independently associated with cardiac involvement in IIM patients. The serum levels of hs-cTnI were significantly correlated with disease activity in IIM patients. The abnormal hs-cTnI levels were correlated with poor prognosis in IIM patients.

Kaolinite supported cerium oxide (CeOx/Kaol) was successfully prepared via a deposition method and used to improve the mechanical and aging properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composite. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results showed that cerium oxide has a successfully loading and fine distribution on the edge and surface of kaolinite. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy indicated that cerium oxide may interact with the surface hydroxyls of kaolinite. The CeOx/Kaol material had a uniform dispersion in the resulting SBR composite. The loading of cerium oxide on Kaol increases the scorch time (t10) and curing time (t90) of the filled SBR composites relative to the pure SBR. The mechanical parameters of the filled SBR composites were increased significantly. The tensible strength and tear strength at 40 phr content with 4% CeOx loading reached 12.85 Mpa and 51.16 kN/m, which were increases of 35.9% and 38.3%, respectively, relative to that of the SBR filled with raw Kaol. The anti-ageing characteristic of the resulting composite showed an obvious improvement with the loading of CeOx. Meanwhile, the reinforcement and anti-ageing mechanisms of the CeOx/Kaol were proposed. These results were attributed to the complexation between Ce elements on the surface of Kaol and rubber chains through a double bond. This could improve the incorporation between rubber molecules and filler particles, and restrict rubber chain motion via trapping rubber chains.
