ABSTRACT: Objective: This study explores how permissive hypercapnia, a key aspect of lung-protective ventilation, impacts postoperative delirium in elderly patients following thoracic surgery. Methods: A single-center trial at The Second Hospital of Anhui Medical University involved 136 elderly patients undergoing thoracoscopic esophageal cancer resection. Randomly assigned to maintain PaCO 2 35-45 mm Hg (group N) or 46-55 mm Hg (group H). Primary outcome: postoperative delirium (POD) incidence 1-3 days post-surgery. Secondary endpoints included monitoring rSO 2 , cardiovascular parameters (MAP, HR), pH, OI, and respiratory parameters (VT, RR, Cdyn, PIP) at specific time points. Perioperative tests assessed CRP/ALB ratio (CAR) and systemic inflammatory index (SII). VAS scores were documented for 3 postoperative days. Results: Postoperatively, group H showed significantly lower POD incidence than group N (7.4% vs. 19.1%, P = 0.043). Group H exhibited higher PaCO 2 and rSO 2 during surgery ( P < 0.05). Patients in group H maintained better cardiovascular stability with higher blood pressure and lower heart rate on T2-4 ( P < 0.05). Respiratory parameters were more stable in group H with lower TV, RR, and PIP, and higher Cdyn during OLV ( P < 0.05). Group H had lower pH and higher OI at T2-4 ( P < 0.05). CRP and CAR levels rose less in group H on the first day and 1 week later ( P < 0.05). Conclusions: Maintaining PaCO 2 at 46-55 mm Hg reduces POD incidence, possibly by enhancing rSO 2 levels and stabilizing intraoperative respiration/circulation.

The degradation of chlorophyll during fruit development is essential to reveal a more 'ripe' color that signals readiness to wild dispersers of seeds and the human consumer. Here, comparative biochemical analysis of developing fruit of Actinidia deliciosa cv. Xuxiang ('XX', green-fleshed) and Actinidia chinensis cv. Jinshi No.1 ('JS', yellow-fleshed) indicated that variation in chlorophyll content is the major contributor to differences in flesh color. Four differentially expressed candidate genes were identified: the down-regulated genes AcCRD1 and AcPOR1 involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis, and the up-regulated genes AcSGR1 and AcSGR2 driving chlorophyll degradation. Prochlorophyllide and chlorophyllide, the metabolites produced by AcCRD1 and AcPOR1, progressively reduced in 'JS', but not in 'XX', indicating that chlorophyll biosynthesis was less active in yellow-fleshed fruit. AcSGR1 and AcSGR2 were verified to be involved in chlorophyll degradation, using both transient expression in tobacco and stable overexpression in kiwifruit. Furthermore, a homeobox-leucine zipper (HD-Zip II), AcHZP45, showed significantly increased expression during 'JS' fruit ripening, which led to both repressed expression of AcCRD1 and AcPOR1 and activated expression of AcSGR1 and AcSGR2. Collectively, the present study indicated that different dynamics of chlorophyll biosynthesis and degradation coordinate the changes in chlorophyll content in kiwifruit flesh, which are orchestrated by the key transcription factor AcHZP45.

Levels of ethylene, implicated in the induction of fruit ripening in a diverse array of plants, are influenced by genetic and environmental factors, such as other plant hormones. Among these, salicylic acid (SA) and its derivative, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), have been demonstrated to inhibit ethylene biosynthesis in fruit, yet the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we showed that treatment with exogenous ASA dramatically reduced ethylene production, as well as activities of ACC synthase (ACS) and ACC oxidase (ACO), in kiwifruit tissues. Comparative transcriptome analysis indicated the differential expression of ethylene biosynthetic genes (AdACS1/2 and AdACO5). A screen of transcription factors indicated that AdERF105L and AdWRKY29 were ASA-responsive regulators of AdACS1/2 and AdACO5, respectively. In addition to these genes, AdACS3 and AdACO3 were abundantly expressed in both ASA-treated and control tissues. AdACS3 protein was phosphorylated and stabilized by AdMPK16, a mitogen-activated protein kinase, while AdACO3 activity was enhanced by AdAP, an aspartic peptidase. Exogenous ASA downregulated AdMPK16 and AdAP, thereby influencing ethylene biosynthesis at a post-transcriptional level. These findings led us to propose a multidimensional system for inhibition of ethylene biosynthesis by ASA, inducing differential expression of some ethylene biosynthesis genes, as well as differential effects on protein activity on other targets.

OBJECTIVES: To study the etiology and clinical features of children with ascites, so as to provide a basis for the diagnosis and treatment of ascites in children. METHODS: The medical data of the children with ascites, who were hospitalized from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2019, were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Among the 165 children with ascites, the male/female ratio was 1.53:1, and the mean age of onset was (6±4) years. The causes of ascites included surgical acute abdomen (39 children, 23.6%), infectious diseases (39 children, 23.6%), neoplastic diseases (27 children, 16.4%), hepatogenic diseases (18 children, 10.9%), pancreatitis (10 children, 6.1%), cardiogenic diseases (8 children, 4.8%), rheumatic immune diseases (6 children, 3.6%), and nephrogenic diseases (5 children, 3.0%). According to the age of onset, there were 33 infants, 24 young children, 30 preschool children, 41 school-aged children, and 37 adolescents. Surgical acute abdomen and hepatogenic diseases were the main causes of ascites in infants (P<0.05). Neoplastic disease was the leading cause in young children (P<0.05). Infectious diseases were the most common cause in adolescents (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Surgical acute abdomen, infectious diseases, neoplastic diseases, and hepatogenic diseases are the common causes of ascites in children, and there are some differences in the leading cause of ascites between different age groups.

Ethylene plays an important role in regulating fruit ripening by triggering dynamic changes in expression of ripening-associated genes, but the functions of many of these genes are still unknown. Here, a methionine sulfoxide reductase gene (AdMsrB1) was identified by transcriptomics-based analysis as the gene most responsive to ethylene treatment in ripening kiwifruit. The AdMsrB1 protein exhibits a stereospecific activity toward the oxidative stress-induced R enantiomer of methionine sulfoxide (MetSO), reducing it to methionine (Met). Stable overexpression of AdMsrB1 in kiwifruit significantly increased the content of free Met and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), the immediate precursor of ethylene, and increased ethylene production. Dual-luciferase assays indicated that the AdMsrB1 promoter was not directly upregulated by ethylene treatment but was modulated by two ethylene-inducible NAM/ATAF/CUC transcription factors (AdNAC2 and AdNAC72) that bind directly to the AdMsrB1 promoter. Overexpression of AdNAC72 in kiwifruit not only enhanced AdMsrB1 expression, but also increased free Met and ACC content and ethylene production rates. This finding establishes an unexpected regulatory loop that enhances ethylene production and the concentration of its biosynthetic intermediates.

As a natural compound isolated from Paeoniae radix, Paeoniflorin (PF) has been shown the antitumor effects in various types of human cancers including glioma, which is one of the serious tumors in central nervous system. Translocator protein 18 KDa (TSPO) has been shown to be relevant to the glioma aetiology. However, the regulation of PF in TSPO and neurosteriods biosynthesis on glioma is still unclear. In the present study, the glioma cell (U87 and U251) were cultured and used to quantify the bindings of PF on TSPO. Results indicated that there was not significant different between IC50 of PF and TSPO ligand PK11195. Moreover, PF exerted the anti-proliferative effects in glioma cell with a dose dependent inhibition from 12.5 to 100 µM in vitro. Consistent with the effects of PK11195, lowered levels on progesterone, allopregnanolone, as well as TSPO mRNA were induced by PF (25 and 50 µM). Furthermore, a xenograft mouse model with U87 cell-derived was significant inhibited by PF treatment, as well as the PK11195 administration. These results demonstrate that PF exerts its antitumor effects associated with the TSPO and neurosteroids biosynthesis in glioma cells could be a promising therapeutic agent for glioma therapy.

Flesh lignification is a specific chilling response that causes deterioration in the quality of stored red-fleshed loquat fruit (Eribotrya japonica) and is one aspect of wider chilling injury. APETALA2/ETHLENE RESPONSIVE FACTOR (AP2/ERF) transcription factors are important regulators of plant low-temperature responses and lignin biosynthesis. In this study, the expression and action of 27 AP2/ERF genes from the red-fleshed loquat cultivar 'Luoyangqing' were investigated in order to identify transcription factors regulating low-temperature-induced lignification. EjERF27, EjERF30, EjERF36, and EjERF39 were significantly induced by storage at 0 °C but inhibited by a low-temperature conditioning treatment (pre-storage at 5 °C for 6 days before storage at 0 °C, which reduces low-temperature-induced lignification), and their transcript levels positively correlated with flesh lignification. A dual-luciferase assay indicated that EjERF39 could transactivate the promoter of the lignin biosynthetic gene Ej4CL1, and an electrophoretic mobility shift assay confirmed that EjERF39 recognizes the DRE element in the promoter region of Ej4CL1. Furthermore, the combination of EjERF39 and the previously characterized EjMYB8 synergistically transactivated the Ej4CL1 promoter, and both transcription factors showed expression patterns correlated with lignification in postharvest treatments and red-fleshed 'Luoyangqing' and white-fleshed 'Ninghaibai' cultivars with different lignification responses. Bimolecular fluorescence complementation and luciferase complementation imaging assays confirmed direct protein-protein interaction between EjERF39 and EjMYB8. These data indicate that EjERF39 is a novel cold-responsive transcriptional activator of Ej4CL1 that forms a synergistic activator complex with EjMYB8 and contributes to loquat fruit lignification at low temperatures.

Cross-talk between various hormones is important in regulating many aspects of plant growth, development, and senescence, including fruit ripening. Here, exogenous ethylene (ETH, 100 µL/L, 12 h) rapidly accelerated 'Hayward' kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) softening and ethylene production and was enhanced by supplementing with continuous treatment with methyl jasmonate (MeJA, 100 µM/L, 12 h) (ETH+MeJA). ETH+MeJA enhanced ACC synthase (ACS) activities and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) accumulation but not ACC oxidase (ACO) activity. Increased transcripts of ACS genes AdACS1 and AdACS2, ACS activity, and ethylene production were positively correlated. The abundance of AdACS1 was about 6-fold higher than AdACS2. RNA-seq identified 6 transcription factors among the 87 differentially expressed unigenes induced by ETH+MeJA. Dual-luciferase and electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA) indicated that AdNAC2/3 physically interacted with and trans-activated the AdACS1 promoter 2.2- and 3.5-fold, respectively. Collectively, our results indicate that MeJA accelerates ethylene production in kiwifruit induced by exogenous ethylene, via a preferential activation of AdACS1 and AdACS2.

Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumors (GNETs) are rare aggressive malignant neoplasms that exclusively occur within the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. The GNET was first described as an 'osteoclast-rich tumor of the gastrointestinal tract with features resembling clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of soft parts' in 2003. Although the GNET shares certain histological features with CCS, it is characterized by a lack of melanocytic differentiation and the presence of non-tumoral osteoclast-like giant cells (OLGCs). The present study reports a case of a GNET of the ileum with intra-abdominal granulomatous nodules, an uncommon accompanying finding, and summarizes the current literature. A 30-year-old woman presented with the symptoms of intestinal obstruction, and a mass was found within the ileum wall. Multiple grey-white nodules were found adhering to the omentum and serosa of the ileum. Histologically, the tumor was located in the muscularis propria and infiltrated the mucosa and the serosa. Tumor cells presented with oval or polygonal nuclei and prominent nucleoli, and were predominantly arranged in nested and pseudopapillary patterns, with the presence of cluster of differentiation (CD)68-positive, scattered OLGC. Immunohistochemically, it was determined that the tumor cells expressed Vimentin, CD56, S-100 and transcription factor SOX-10, while being negative for pan-cytokeratin, cytokeratin (CK)7, CK20, synaptophysin, chromogranin-A, CD117, anoctamin-1, CD34, human melanoma black-45, Melan-A, smooth muscle actin, CD3 and CD20 expression. Ewing sarcoma breakpoint region 1 gene rearrangement was identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis. Ultrastructurally, no typical melanosomes were identified. In addition, the intra-abdominal grey-white nodules were microscopically identified as chronic granulomatous inflammation. The patient received four cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy following routine tumor resection. Due to its rarity and histological similarity with other neoplasms, unfamiliarity with the features of GNETs by surgical pathologists can easily lead to a misdiagnosis. Therefore, comprehensive assessments, including morphology and ancillary studies, are required for an accurate diagnosis of GNET.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of genistein (Gen) on myocardial injury in diabetic rats and explore its mechanisms. METHODS: Male SD rats were randomly divided into normal (N) group, diabetic (D) group, Gen 5 mg/kg treatment (L) group and Gen 25 mg/kg treatment (H) group (n=8 for each group). Intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin was utilized to establish type 1 diabetic rat model. After successful building models, from the fifth week, the rats in the L and H groups were daily gavaged with 5 mg/kg and 25 mg/kg Gen solution, respectively. After 4 weeks of treatment with Gen, the hemodynamic parameters and fasting blood glucose (FBG) level were measured. The morphological structure and ultrastructure of myocardium were observed using HE staining and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) and Caspase-3 in myocardial tissue were measured. The levels of myocardial Bcl-2 and Bax at mRNA expression were detected using RT-PCR. The levels of myocardial thioredoxin (Trx), Trx-interacting protein (TXNIP) and apoptosis signal regulating kinase 1 (ASK1) at protein expression were detected using Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with the N group, the FBG, TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, MDA and Caspase-3 levels were increased (P<0.01), while hemodynamic parameters and GSH content were decreased (P<0.01), the myocardial morphological structure and ultrastructure were damaged in the D group. The levels of Bcl-2 mRNA and Trx protein expression were significantly decreased (P<0.01), while the levels of Bax mRNA, TXNIP and ASK1 protein expression were significantly increased (P<0.01) in the D group. Compared with the D group, in the L and H groups, there was no significant difference in [CM(155mm]FBG, the TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, MDA and Caspase-3 levels were decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01), while the hemodynamic parameters and GSH content were increased (P<0.05, P<0.01); the myocardial morphological structural and ultrastructural damages were alleviated; the levels of Bcl-2 mRNA and Trx protein expression were increased (P<0.05, P<0.01), while the levels of Bax mRNA, TXNIP and ASK1 protein expression were significantly decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Gen exhibits a protective effect on myocardial injury in diabetic rats, and the mechanisms may be associated with the reduction of inflammatory reaction, the regulation of Trx system expression, and the inhibition of oxidative stress and cell apoptosis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on renal fibrosis in diabetic rats and explore its mechanism. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal control (NC) group, a diabetic control (DC) group, diabetes mellitus (DM)+sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) group and DM+DL-propargylglycine (PAG) group, with 8 rats in each group.Type 1 diabetes was induced in the respective groups by a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of streptozotocin.From the fifth week, rats in the DM+NaHS and DM+PAG groups were injected (i.p.) with 56 µmol/kg NaHS and 40 mg/kg PAG once a day, respectively.After treatment for 4 weeks, the levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (SCr) were detected.The deposition of renal collagen fibers was observed by Masson staining, and collagen volume fraction (CVF) was calculated.The ultrastructural change of renal tissue was observed by transmission electron microscopy.The levels of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and hydroxyproline (Hyp) in renal tissues were detected using the kits.The expression levels of TGF-ß1, Smad3, phosphorylated (p)-Smad3 and collagen-IV (col-IV) in renal tissues were detected using Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with the NC group, the levels of FBG, BUN, SCr, CVF, IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α and Hyp were increased; the deposition of renal collagen fibers and the ultrastructural damage were aggravated; the levels of TGF-ß1, Smad3, p-Smad3, p-Smad3/Smad3 and col-IV were increased in the DC group.Compared with the DC group, excluding FBG, the aforementioned indices were improved in the DM+NaHS group; the aforementioned indices were further aggravated in the DM+PAG group. CONCLUSIONS: H2S attenuated renal fibrosis in diabetic rats, and the mechanism might be associated with the reduction of the release of proinflammatory cytokines, downregulation of the TGF-ß1/Smad3 pathway, and inhibition of excessive accumulation of col-IV.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of genistein (GEN) on myocardial fibrosis in type 1 diabetic rats and explore the underlying mechanisms. Rats were divided into 4 groups: Normal control (N), diabetic control (D), low­dose GEN treatment (L) and high­dose GEN treatment (H) groups. Following 8 weeks, the ventricular hemodynamic parameters, fasting blood glucose (FBG), heart­weight to body­weight ratio (HW/BW), myocardial hydroxyproline (Hyp) content, serum creatine kinase MB isozyme (CK­MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), tumor necrosis factor­α (TNF­α), interleukin­1ß (IL­1ß) and interleukin­6 (IL­6) levels were measured. The histomorphology and ultrastructure of the heart were observed. The protein expression of myocardial transforming growth factor­ß1 (TGF­ß1), mothers against decapentaplegic homolog (Smad)­3, phosphorylated (p)­Smad3, Smad4, collagen­I and collagen­III were estimated. Compared with the N group, while the cardiac function was decreased, the levels of FBG, HW/BW, Hyp content, CK­MB, LDH, TNF­α, IL­1ß and IL­6 were increased in the D group. The myocardial histomorphological alterations and ultrastructure were damaged, and the protein expression of myocardial TGF­ß1, Smad3, p­Smad3, Smad4, collagen­I and collagen­III were increased in the D group. Compared with the D group, there were no differences in the ventricular hemodynamic parameters, FBG and p­Smad3 expression in the L group, while HW/BW, Hyp content, CK­MB, LDH, TNF­α, IL­1ß and IL­6 levels were decreased. The myocardial histomorphological damage was alleviated and the protein expression of TGF­ß1, Smad3, Smad4, collagen­I and collagen­III was decreased in the L group. Compared with L group, excluding FBG, the aforementioned indices were improved in the H group. In conclusion, GEN can attenuate myocardial fibrosis in type 1 diabetic rats, and the underlying mechanisms may be associated with the reduction of CK­MB and LDH leakage, inhibition of the inflammatory reaction, and suppression of the TGF­ß1/Smad3 signaling pathway to regulate collagen expression.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the protective effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on kidneys of type 1 diabetic rats and its underlying mechanism. METHODS: Thirty-two male SD rats were randomly divided into four groups:normal control (NC) group, diabetes mellitus (DM) group, DM treatment (NaHS+DM) group and NaHS control (NaHS) group. The rats from DM group and NaHS+DM group were injected intraperitoneally with Streptozotocin 55 mg/kg to induce type 1 diabetes mellitus (n=8). After modeling, rats in NaHS+DM group and NaHS group were intraperitoneally injected with NaHS solution at the dosage of 56 µmol/kg. After 8 weeks, urinary protein content was detected in urine samples collected for 24 h. and the ratio of kidney weight/body weight (renal index) was determined in isolated kidneys. Besides, the levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (Scr) were measured biochemically. The morphological changes of renal tissue were observed by HE staining. The content of malondialdehyde (MDA), the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Caspase-3 in renal tissue were determined by spectrophotometry. The protein expression levels of Bcl-2 and Bax in renal tissue were detected using Western blot. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the respective measured indexes in rats between NC group and NaHS group. However, in DM group, the levels of 24 h urinary protein, FBG, BUN, Scr and renal index were increased significantly; HE staining showed that the basement membrane was thickened and the amount of glomerular mesangial matrix was increased; MDA content, Caspase-3 activity and Bax expression levels were increased, while SOD activity and Bcl-2 expression were decreased. Compared with those in DM group, the morphological changes of renal tissue and its function were improved; MDA content, Caspase-3 activity and Bax expression were decreased significantly, while SOD activity and Bcl-2 expression were increased obviously in NaHS+DM group. CONCLUSIONS: H2S can protect the kidneys of type 1 diabetic rats, which is related to suppressing oxidative stress and cell apoptosis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the correlation between glycemic control of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and brachial-ankle pulse velocity (baPWV). METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Beijing, China. Every subject underwent physical examinations, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), blood lipid and baPWV measurements and completed a standardized questionnaire. T2DM patients were divided into well controlled and poorly controlled groups according to HbA1c levels. The correlation between glycemic control of T2DM patients and baPWV was analyzed. RESULTS: In this study, 1 341 subjects were recruited, including 733 T2DM patients and 608 non-diabetes subjects. Compared with non-diabetes subjects, abnormal baPWV (baPWV≥1 700 cm/s) rate for T2DM patients was higher (40.8% vs. 26.8%, P<0.001). With HbA1c<6.5% or <7.0% as the aim of glycemic control in T2DM patients, the abnormal baPWV rates for non-diabetes subjects, well controlled and poorly controlled T2DM patients were significantly different (non-diabetes vs. HbA1c<6.5% T2DM vs. HbA1c≥6.5% T2DM: 26.8% vs. 32.8% vs. 42.6%, P<0.001; non-diabetes vs. HbA1c<7.0% T2DM vs. HbA1c≥7.0% T2DM: 26.8% vs. 36.1% vs. 43.4%, P<0.001). After being adjusted for gender, age, smoking status, diabetes mellitus family history, T2DM duration, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), waist hip ratio (WHR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), the Logistic regression models suggested that glycemic control status of T2DM patients was associated with abnormal baPWV. Compared with non-diabetes subjects, the ORs for abnormal baPWV in HbA1c<6.5% T2DM patients and HbA1c≥6.5% T2DM patients were 0.927(95%CI 0.560-1.537) and 1.826 (95%CI 1.287-2.591). Compared with non-diabetes subjects, the ORs for abnormal baPWV in HbA1c<7.0% T2DM patients and HbA1c≥7.0% T2DM patients were 1.210 (95%CI 0.808-1.811) and 1.898 (95%CI 1.313-2.745). CONCLUSION: The glycemic control status of T2DM patients from communities is significantly associated with baPWV. Poor glycemic control is a risk factor for abnormal baPWV. Keeping HbA1c under control might lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases in T2DM patients.

Male and female heroin-dependent patients (HDPs) matched with "normal" people were tested on 4 topographical orientation tasks: schematic map-following, map-memory, schematic picture-following, and picture-memory tasks. The results showed that, in general, female HDPs demonstrated greater performance deficits in map-following and map-picture-memory tasks than did other participants. In the map-picture-following tasks, participants showed a preference for turning right versus turning left, reflected by lower correct scores and longer latencies in completing left-oriented tasks. In contrast, no difference in orientation preference was found for participants in memory tasks, except for female HDPs. Asymmetric dopamine receptor distribution in the brain, sex steroidal hormone, brain areas related to motor functioning and working memory, and gender-dependent lateralization may be involved in the different effects of heroin and rightward bias between men and women.

OBJECTIVE: To compare and improve the methods of establishing animal model of experimental chronic sinusitis in rabbits . METHODS: Sixty-six New Zealand white rabbits were divided into seven groups: control group, sham-operation group I, sham-operation group II, bacteria inoculation group, ostia-blocked group, ostia-blocked and bacteria inoculation group, incomplete ostium blocked and set-cotton group. The animals were examined by the methods of histology and bacteriology after 42 days. RESULTS: The positive rate of chronic inflammation in ostium blocked group was 80%, inoculated staphylococcus group was 100%, incomplete ostium blocked and set-cotton group was 100%, and the other groups were 0%. All infected sinuses displayed signs of moderate or severe chronic inflammation. The cultivated bacteria were mainly opportunistic pathogens. The probability of having abscess in maxillary sinus was high in ostia-blocked and bacteria inoculation group. CONCLUSIONS: The method of incomplete ostium blockage and set cotton can establish stable chronic sinusitis model, it is a simple and perfect method.
