RESUMO

The addition of iron-based conductive materials has been extensively validated as a highly effective approach to augment methane generation from anaerobic digestion (AD) process. In this work, it was additionally discovered that Fe3O4 notably suppressed the production of hazardous H2S gas during sludge AD. As the addition of Fe3O4 increased from 0 to 20 g/L, the accumulative H2S yields decreased by 89.2 % while the content of element sulfur and acid volatile sulfide (AVS) respectively increased by 55.0 % and 30.4 %. Mechanism analyses showed that the added Fe3O4 facilitated sludge conductive capacity, and boosted the efficiency of extracellular electron transfer, which accelerated the bioprocess of sulfide oxidation. Although Fe3O4 can chemically oxidize sulfide to elemental sulfur, microbial oxidation plays a major role in reducing H2S accumulation. Moreover, the released iron ions reacted with soluble sulfide, which promoted the chemical equilibrium of sulfide species from H2S to metal sulfide. Microbial analysis showed that some SRBs (i.e., Desulfomicrobium and Defluviicoccus) and SOB (i.e., Sulfuritalea) changed into keystone taxa (i.e., connectors and module hubs) in the reactor with Fe3O4 addition, showing that the functions of sulfate reduction and sulfur oxidation may play important roles in Fe3O4-present system. Fe3O4 presence also increased the content of functional genes encoding sulfide quinone reductase and flavocytochrome c sulfidedehydrogenase (e.g., Sqr and Fcc) that could oxidize sulfide to sulfur. The impact of other iron-based conductive material (i.e., zero-valent iron) was also verified, and the results showed that it could also significantly reduce H2S production. These findings provide new insights into the effect of iron-based conductive materials on anaerobic process, especially sulfur conversion.

RESUMO

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of tea polyphenols (TP) and medicinal plant mixtures (Astragalus membranaceus + Lonicera japonica, Rheum officinale Bail + Scutellaria baicalensis + Platycladus orientalis) combined with astaxanthin (AST), benzoic acid (BA), and yeast complex on the health status of Eriocheir sinensis. Method: A total of 630 crabs (male crabs: 41.51 ± 1.63 g; female crabs: 47.27 ± 0.79 g) were randomly distributed into seven groups with three replicates (male: female, 1:1). These crabs were fed as follows for 8 weeks: basal diet (M1), M2 (M1 + 100 mg/kg TP), M3 (M1 + 2.0 g/kg A. membranaceus + 20 g/kg L. japonica), M4 (M1 + 2.5 g/kg R. officinale Bail + 1.5 g/kg S. baicalensis + 1.0 g/kg P. orientalis), and M5, M6, M7 (M2, M3 and M4 with 600 mg/kg AST +1.0 g/kg BA + 20 mg/kg yeast complex added, respectively). Results and discussion: The results showed that the activities of acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), and lysosome (LZM) in the hemolymph were significantly increased in M5, M6, and M7 (P < 0.05), and the highest phagocytosis index (PI) and LZM activity were observed in M7 of female crabs. Moreover, the antioxidant indicators superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) of hepatopancreas were also significantly improved in M5, M6, and M7 (P < 0.05), while the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents showed an opposite trend. Furthermore, a morphological examination also showed the improved histological structure of hepatopancreas in M7, especially as seen in the clear lumens, no vacuolation, and integrity of the basal membrane of the hepatopancreatic tubule. Taken together, these results suggested that 2.5 g/kg R. officinale Bail, 1.5 g/kg S. baicalensis, and 1.0 g/kg P. orientalis in combination with 600 mg/kg AST, 1.0 g/kg BA, and 20 mg/kg yeast complex could improve the non-specific immunity, antioxidant capacity, and hepatopancreatic health of E. sinensis.

RESUMO

Ofloxacin (OFL) is a commonly used antibiotic that can enter wastewater treatment plants and be adsorbed by the sludge, resulting in a high OFL concentration in sludge and affecting the subsequent sludge anaerobic digestion process. However, the micro mechanisms involved in this process have not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, this study focuses on the effect of OFL on the sludge anaerobic digestion of sludge to provide such support. The experimental results showed that the maximal methane yield decreased from 277.7 to 164.7 mL/g VSS with the OFL concentration increased from 0 to 300 mg/L. Additionally, OFL hindered the intermediate biochemical processes of hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and acetoclastic methanogenesis. However, it promoted hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis process, using H2 as substrate, with the concentration of 300 mg/L OFL was 5.54 fold methane production of that in the control. Further investigation revealed that the negative effect of OFL was likely due to the induction of reactive oxygen species, which led to a decrease in cell activity and interference with the activity of key enzymes. Microbiological analysis revealed that OFL reduced the relative abundance of hydrolysis and acidogenesis bacteria, and Methanosaeta archaea, while increasing the relative abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis microorganism from 36.54% to 51.48% as the OFL concentration increase from 0 to 300 mg/L.

RESUMO

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are widely used in consumer products, leading to their unavoidable release into the environment, especially accumulation in anaerobic environments and posing potential risks. This study focused on Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), a representative OPFR, to investigate its effects on carbon transformation and methane production in anaerobic digestion. Increasing TCEP concentrations from control to 16 mg/L resulted in decreased cumulative methane yield (from 235.4 to 196.3 mL/g COD) and maximum daily methane yield (from 40.8 to 16.17 mL/(g COD·d)), along with an extended optimal anaerobic digestion time (from 15 to 20 days). Mechanistic analysis revealed TCEP binding to tyrosine-like proteins in extracellular polymeric substances, causing cell membrane integrity impairment. The TCEP-caused alteration of the physiological status of cells was demonstrated to be a significant contribution to the inhibited bioprocesses including acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis. Illumina Miseq sequencing showed TCEP decreasing the relative abundance of acidogens (58.8 % to 46.0 %) and acetogens (7.1 % to 5.0 %), partly shifting the methanogenesis pathway from acetoclastic to hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. These findings enhance understanding of TCEP's impact on anaerobic digestion, emphasizing the environmental risk associated with its continued accumulation.

RESUMO

The widespread application of nanotechnology inevitably leads to an increased release of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) into the environment. Due to their specific physicochemical properties, ENPs may interact with other contaminants and exert combined effects on the microbial community and metabolism of anaerobic digestion (AD), an important process for organic waste reduction, stabilization, and bioenergy recovery. However, the complicated interactions between ENPs and other contaminants as well as their combined effects on AD are often overlooked. This review therefore focuses on the co-occurrence of ENPs and cocontaminants in the AD process. The key interactions between ENPs and cocontaminants and their combined influences on AD are summarized from the available literature, including the critical mechanisms and influencing factors. Some sulfides, coagulants, and chelating agents have a dramatic "detoxification" effect on the inhibition effect of ENPs on AD. However, some antibiotics and surfactants increase the inhibition of ENPs on AD. The reasons for these differences may be related to the interactive effects between ENPs and cocontaminants, changes of key enzyme activities, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and microbial communities. New scientific opportunities for a better understanding of the coexistence in real world situations are converging on the scale of nanoparticles.

RESUMO

A variety of variables limit the recovery of resources from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS), hence pretreatment strategies are necessary to be investigated to increase its efficiency. A combination of free nitrous acid (FNA) and calcium hypochlorite [Ca(ClO)2] was employed in this investigation to significantly improve sludge fermentation performance. The yields of cumulative hydrogen for the blank and FNA treatment group were 1.09 ± 0.16 and 7.36 ± 0.21 mL/g VSS, respectively, and 6.59 ± 0.24 [0.03 g Ca(ClO)2/g TSS], 7.75 ± 0.20 (0.06), and 8.58 ± 0.22 (0.09) mL/g VSS for the Ca(ClO)2 groups. The co-treatment greatly boosted hydrogen generation, ranging from 39.97 ± 2.26 to 76.20 ± 4.78 % as compared to the solo treatment. Mechanism analysis demonstrated that the combined treatment disturbed sludge structure and cell membrane permeability even more, which released more organic substrates and enhanced biodegradability of fermentation broth. This paper describes a unique strategy to sludge pretreatment that expands the use of Ca(ClO)2 and FNA in anaerobic fermentation, with implications for sludge disposal and energy recovery.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) and Cd have been proven to inhibit methane production from anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. However, the published studies mainly focused on their single inhibition. This cannot reflect the real-world situations where MPs and Cd co-exist. This study therefore aims to reveal the combined effect of MPs and Cd on anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. Experimental results showed that PVC-MPs at environmentally relevant levels (e.g., 1, 10 particles/g total solids (TS)) did not affect methane yield but decrease the toxicity of Cd. When PVC-MPs were 30 particles/g TS, the cumulative methane production recovered from 58.8 % (in the presence of 5 mg Cd/g TS) to 89.7 % of the control. Organic fluxes were significantly increased compared with the control, particularly affecting the content of dissolved substances and short-chain fatty acids during anaerobic digestion. Mechanistic exploration showed that the adsorption of Cd by PVC-MPs was higher than that of sludge-substrate, which reduced the bioavailability of Cd by anaerobes, as evidenced by the increased anaerobes driven carbon flux from solid-phase to bio-methane during anaerobic digestion. Overall, these findings identified important factors in determining the toxicity of pollutants on anaerobic digestion process, providing precise data for toxicity evaluation of MPs and metals in anaerobic environment.

RESUMO

Rhamnolipid (RL), one representative biosurfactant, is widely regarded as an economically feasible and environmentally beneficial additive to improve fermentation efficiency and resource recovery from waste activated sludge (WAS). However, its potentially detrimental impact on WAS fermentation such as H2S generation was overlooked previously. This study therefore aims to fill the gap through exploring whether and how the presence of RL affects H2S generation from WAS anaerobic fermentation. Experimental results showed that when RL increased from 0 to 40 mg/g total suspended solids (TSS), the cumulative H2S yield enhanced from 323.6 ×  10-4 to 620.3 ×  10-4 mg/g volatile suspended solids (VSS). Mechanism analysis showed that RL reduced WAS surface tension, which benefited transformations of organic sulfurs (e.g., aliphatic-S and sulfoxide) and inorganic sulfate from solid to liquid phase. The presence of RL not only reduced the ratio of α-helix/(ß-sheet + random coil) and damaged the hydrogen bonding networks of organic sulfurs but also promoted substrate surface charges and cell membrane permeability. These facilitated the contact between hydrolase and organic sulfurs, thereby increasing sulfide production from organic sulfurs hydrolysis. Further investigations showed that RL promoted the expression of key genes (e.g., aprA/B and dsrA/B) involved in the dissimilatory sulfate reduction, which accelerated the reaction of adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate (APS)→ sulfite→ sulfide. Meanwhile, RL inhibited the corresponding key genes such as CysH, and Sir, responsible for assimilatory sulfate reduction (APS→3'-phosphoadenosine-5'phosphosulfate→organosulfur), which reduced substrate competition in favor of H2S production from dissimilatory sulfate reduction. Besides, RL decreased the fermentation pH, which benefited the transformation of HS- to H2S.

RESUMO

Hydrogen production from waste-activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic fermentation is considered to be an effective method of resource recovery. However, the presence of a large number of complex organic compounds in sludge will affect the biological hydrogen production process. As an extensively applied prevalent anti-inflammatory drug, diclofenac (DCF) is inevitably released into the environment. However, the effect of diclofenac on hydrogen production from WAS anaerobic fermentation has not been fully investigated. This work therefore aims to comprehensively investigate the removal efficiency of DCF in mesophilic anaerobic fermentation of WAS and its effect on hydrogen yield. Experiment results showed that 32.5%-38.3% of DCF was degraded in the fermentation process when DCF concentration was ranged from 6 to 100 mg/kg TSS (total suspended solids). DCF at environmental level inhibited hydrogen production, the maximal hydrogen yield decreased from 24.2 to 15.3 mL/g VSS (volatile suspended solids) with an increase of DCF addition from 6 to 100 mg/kg TSS. This is because the presence of DCF caused inhibitions to acetogenesis and acidogenesis, the processes responsible for hydrogen production, probably due to that the polar groups of DCF (i.e., carboxyl group) could readily bind to active sites of [FeFe]- Hydrogenase. Besides, the microbial analysis revealed that DCF increased the microbial diversity but had few influences on the microbial structure.

RESUMO

Producing methane from anaerobic co-digestion of kitchen waste and waste activated sludge has been widely implemented in real-world situations. However, the fate and impact of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a main active component in cruciferous vegetables, in the anaerobic co-digestion has never been documented. This study therefore aims to provide such supports. Experimental results exhibited that AITC was degraded completely by microorganisms and served as a substrate to produce methane. As AITC increased from 0 to 60 mg/L, the maximum methane production decreased from 285.1 to 35.8 mL/g VS, and the optimum digestion time was also prolonged. The mechanism study demonstrated that AITC induced cell apoptosis by modifying the physicochemical properties of cell membrane, which resulted in inhibitions to the procedure of anaerobic co-digestion. The high-throughput sequencing showed that AITC enriched the microorganism for degradation of complex organic compounds such as Bacillus, but lessened anaerobes involved in hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and methanogenesis.

RESUMO

Poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and poly ferric sulfate (PFS) are widely used in wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering, resulting in their amounts being accumulated substantially in waste activated sludge (WAS). Till now, however, little information about their influence on WAS digestion is available. This work therefore aims to provide insights into how PAC and PFS affect sludge anaerobic digestion. The experimental results showed that PFS's inhibition to methane production was much severer than PAC, in control reactor (0 mg Al or Fe /g TSS), the maximum cumulative methane production was 152.99 ± 7.18 mL/g VSS, when flocculants concentration increased to 30 mg Al/g TSS or 30 mg Fe/g TSS, the yields decreased to 129.54 ± 6.18 mL/g VSS and 89.52 ± 4.82 mL/g VSS respectively. Mechanism explorations exhibited that protein in WAS could bond with flocculants, which would inhibit protein bioconversion. It was also observed that the apparent activation energy (AAE) of organic solubilisation of PAC and PFS-contained sludge were increased by 38.58% and 18.67% respectively. Meanwhile, compared to the PFS, PAC led to more serious suppression of hydrolysis and acidogenesis processes, with propionic acid used as substrate, PFS inhibit methanogenesis more severely than PAC. Illumina MiSeq sequencing analyses showed that the number of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) enriched obviously in PFS reactor. The results revealed that although PFS reduced methane production more severely than PAC, the reduction was mainly enforced by the activity of SRB but not organic enmeshment. Furthermore, PAC severely suppresses acetotrophic methanogens but PFS depress hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis microorganism mainly. Additionally, malodor control and dewaterability enhancement of digested sludge can be realized with PAC existence. The finding obtained in this study would provide insights into the PFS or PAC-involved sludge anaerobic digestion system and might support the important implication for further manipulate WAS treatment in the future.

RESUMO

Rhamnolipid (RL), as an environmentally compatible biosurfactant, has been used to enhance waste activated sludge (WAS) fermentation. However, the effect of RL on hydrogen accumulation in anaerobic fermentation remains unclear. Therefore, this work targets to investigate the mechanism of RL-based dark fermentation system on hydrogen production of WAS. It was found that the maximum yield of hydrogen increased from 1.76 ± 0.26 to 11.01 ± 0.30 mL/g VSS (volatile suspended solids), when RL concentration increased from 0 to 0.10 g/g TSS (total suspended solids). Further enhancement of RL level to 0.12 g/g TSS slightly reduced the production to 10.80 ± 0.28 mL/g VSS. Experimental findings revealed that although RL could be degraded to generate hydrogen, it did not play a major role in enhancing hydrogen accumulation. Mechanism analysis suggested that RL decreased the surface tension between sludge liquid and hydrophobic compounds, thus accelerating the solubilization of WAS, improving the proportion of biodegradable substances which could be used for subsequent hydrogen production. Regardless of the fact that adding RL suppressed all the fermentation processes, the inhibition effect of processes associated with hydrogen consumption was much severer than that of hydrogen production. Further investigations of microbial community revealed that RL enriched the relative abundance of hydrogen producers e.g., Romboutsia but reduced that of hydrogen consumers like Desulfobulbus and Caldisericum.

RESUMO

Anaerobically digested sludge (ADS) is commonly hard to dewater for the presence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the liberation of glutinous soluble microbic products during anaerobic digestion. Sodium percarbonate (SPC) expediting zero-valent iron (ZVI) corrosion (SPC/ZVI) process firstly conditioned ADS to amend its dewaterability. Results showed that SPC/ZVI conditioning decreased moisture content of dewatered cake from 90.5% (control) to 69.9% with addition of 0.10 g/g TS SPC and 0.20 g/g TS ZVI. Mechanistic research indicated that the enhanced ADS dewaterability mainly resulted from •OH and Fe(III)/iron polymers yielded in SPC/ZVI. •OH disrupted EPS, damaged cytoderm & cytomembrane, and lysed intracellular substances, unbinding the bound water. Meanwhile, the breakage and inactivation of microbe by •OH prompted the production of macro-pores in ADS. •OH adjusted the conformation of extracellular/intracellular proteins by intervening in the H-bonds and S-S bonds, availing the hydrophobicity and slight flocculation of ADS. •OH further facilitated the despiralization of α-helical to ß-sheet structure in ADS pellets, benefiting cell-to-cell aggregation. Additionally, Fe(III)/iron polymers from ZVI corrosion accelerated to gather ADS and maintained its floc structure. Consequently, SPC/ZVI conditioning not only adjusted the natures of ADS and its EPS but also the features of residual pellets, which further induced the advancement of ADS dewaterability. In addition, SPC/ZVI conditioning possibly surmounts some limitations existing in ZVI/Peroxide or ZVI/Persulfate technique.

RESUMO

This work proved an efficient method to significantly increase methane production from anaerobic digestion of WAS. This method is to reflux proper of digestion liquid into waste activated sludge pretreatment unit (pH 9.5 for 24 h). The yield of maximum methane improved between 174.2 ± 7.3 and 282.5 ± 14.1 mL/g VSS with the reflux ratio of digestion liquid increasing from 0% to 20%. It was observed that the biodegradable organics in the digestion liquid did not affect the biological processes related to anaerobic digestion but increased methane production through reutilization. The ammonium in the digestion liquid was the main contributor to the increase in methane production via promoting sludge solubilization, but refractory organics were the major inhibitors to anaerobic digestion. It should be emphasized that the metal ions present in the digestion liquid were beneficial rather than harmful to the biological processes in the anaerobic digestion, which may be connected with the fact that certain metal ions were involved in the expression and activation of key enzymes. In addition, it was found that anaerobes in digestion liquid were another potential contributor to the enhanced anaerobic digestion.

RESUMO

Here, a new amorphous material composed of carbon-coated zinc cobaltate doped with manganese and nickel ZNMC@C (ZnNi0.5Mn0.5CoO4@C) with a spinel structure is proposed as a cathode material for use in aqueous zinc-ion batteries. This cathode material exhibits a high charge/discharge capacity with an initial capacity of about 160 mA h g-1 and its capacity retention rate remains at 60% after 500 cycles at 0.2 A g-1, which is higher than that of some reported spinel cathode materials. This superior electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the co-doping of manganese and nickel, which produces reversible multivalence redox transition activity (Co4+/Co3+, Ni4+/Ni3+/Ni2+, and Mn4+/Mn3+) that facilitates the insertion and migration of zinc ions and the existence of an outer amorphous carbon coating that effectively inhibits the dissolution of the cathode structure and stabilizes the cathode structure. In addition, the cycling mechanism of ZNMC@C was analyzed in detail through electrochemical measurements of the different cycling stages, including the kinetic behavior based on cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic analysis and the reaction mechanism from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ex situ X-ray diffractometry and ex situ scanning electron microscopy analysis. These research results suggest that the ZNMC@C composite material could be a competitive cathode material for Abs (aqueous rechargeable batteries).

RESUMO

Peroxide/Zero-valent iron (Fe0) was reported to promote dewaterability of anaerobically digested sludge (ADS), but the mechanism of how Peroxide/Fe0 facilitates ADS dewatering is unknown. This study therefore aims to uncover the details of how Peroxide/Fe° elevates ADS dewaterability. Experimental results showed that with 0.6 g Fe0/g TSS and 0.08 g peroxide/g TSS, capillary suction time, specific resistance to filtration, and time to filtration of ADS was 50.7 %, 41.4 %, and 54.4 % of that in the control, respectively. In this condition, water content of sludge cake decreased from 91.2 % ± 0.5 % (the control) to 68.6 % ± 1.3 %. The mechanism explorations revealed that the elevated dewaterability was mainly caused by role of OH and Fe(II)/Fe(III) species during Peroxide/Fe° pretreatment. OH decreased the polysaccharides and proteins in extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), then injured the cytoderm & cytomembrane through the releases of lactate dehydrogenase and N-acetylglucosamine, and further facilitated the decrease of intracellular substances, which disengaged the water trapped in ADS. In addition, the cell lysis caused by OH facilitated forming macro-pores. Moreover, OH converted the conformational structure of extracellular proteins, which may strengthen the ADS hydrophobicity, promoting the discharge of unbound water and ADS flocculation. Meanwhile, Fe(II)/Fe(III) benefited aggregating the denatured ADS particulates.

RESUMO

In this study, long-term experiments were performed under synthetic wastewater conditions to evaluated the potential impacts of norfloxacin (NOR) (10, 100 and 500 µg/L) on enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). Experimental result showed that long-term exposure to 10 µg/L NOR induced negligible effects on phosphorus removal. The presence of 100 µg/L NOR slightly decreased phosphorus removal efficiency to 94.41 ± 1.59 %. However, when NOR level further increased to 500 µg/L, phosphorus removal efficiency was significantly decreased from 97.96 ± 0.8 5% (control) to 82.33 ± 3.07 %. The mechanism study revealed that the presence of 500 µg/L NOR inhibited anaerobic phosphorus release and acetate uptake as well as aerobic phosphorus uptake during long-term exposure. It was also found that 500 µg/L NOR exposure suppressed the activity of key enzymes related to phosphorus removal but promoted the transformations of intracellular polyhydroxyalkanoate and glycogen. Microbial analysis revealed that that the presence of 500 µg/L NOR reduced the abundances of polyphosphate accumulating organisms but increased glycogen accumulating organisms, as compared the control.

RESUMO

Fe(II)/persulfate process has been proven to be a promising technique for disintegrating sludge, while during the Fe(II)/persulfate treatment the direct information about the variation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) properties, which is a key factor affecting sludge dewatering, is still lacked. In this work, different dosages of Fe(II)/persulfate were employed to treat EPS fractions extracted from waste activated sludge. The experiment results showed that EPS fractions were modified by Fe(II)/persulfate process. An oxidation/flocculation process was raised to unveil how Fe(II)/persulfate modified EPS fractions: Firstly, SO4- and OH were formed by chemical reactions of Fe(II) activating persulfate and radical interconversion, respectively. Then these species nonselectively fragmented EPS fractions through decomposing their components, which facilitated decrement of the hydrophilic components and high/mid molecular weight of organics in EPS fractions. Furthermore, these radicals transformed the secondary structure of EPS proteins by affecting the hydrogen bonds at specific positions and inducing the cleavage of the S-S bonds in cysteine residues of proteins, which led to loose layout of protein molecules and thus increased exposure of the hydrophobic groups hidden in EPS protein molecules. Secondly, Fe(III), i.e., the oxidation product of Fe(II), assembled the ruptured colloids particles through lessening electronegativity. Consequently, Fe(II)/persulfate process elevated the flocculability and hydrophobicity of EPS fractions, which would improve physicochemical and rheological properties of sludge to facilitate its dewaterability.

RESUMO

Thiosulfinate, a nature antibiotic, existed in all parts of Allium thereby accumulating in kitchen waste vastly. However, few literatures were available related to its influence on volatile fatty acids (VFA) and hydrogen production when kitchen waste digestion technology was applied. This study aimed to explore the inhibitory effect and the relevant mechanism. Experimental results showed that the hydrogen accumulation decreased from 23.2 ± 0.8 to 8.2 ± 0.1 mL/g VSS (volatile suspended solid) and maximal total VFA yield decreased from 765.7 ± 21.2 to 376.4 ± 21.7 mg COD (chemical oxygen demand)/g VSS when the dosage of thiosulfinate increased from 0 to 12.5 µg/g VSS. The mechanism study indicated, compared with control group, that the butyric acid decreased from 59% to 20.1% of total VFA yield when reactor in present of 12.5 µg/g VSS thiosulfinate. Moreover, the relative activities of functional enzymes were inhibited 73.4% (butyryl-CoA) and 72.7% (NADH), respectively.

RESUMO

Alkaline pretreatment was demonstrated to be effective in the enhancement of hydrogen production. However, the sludge solubilization rate of alkaline pretreatment is still limited. This study reports a new strategy of K2FeO4 + pH 9.5 for sludge mesophilic anaerobic fermentation. Experimental results showed that the combination of K2FeO4/pH 9.5 pretreatment had a greater hydrogen yield than the individual K2FeO4 and pH 9.5. The maximum hydrogen yield was 19.2 mL per gram volatile suspended solids (VSS) under the optimal condition (0.02 g per gram total suspended solids K2FeO4 + pH 9.5). Kinetic analysis showed that the highest hydrogen production potential of 19.9 mL/g VSS was obtained in the combined reactor, which well fitted the first-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9925). Besides, the fermentation type was mainly acetic and butyric in the combined reactor, which contributed to hydrogen production. Further analyses showed that the combined pretreatment reduced hydrogen sulfide yield, providing an environmentally friendly method to sludge treatment.
