BACKGROUND: The rebound of influenza A (H1N1) infection in post-COVID-19 era recently attracted enormous attention due the rapidly increased number of pediatric hospitalizations and the changed characteristics compared to classical H1N1 infection in pre-COVID-19 era. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and severity of children hospitalized with H1N1 infection during post-COVID-19 period, and to construct a novel prediction model for severe H1N1 infection. METHODS: A total of 757 pediatric H1N1 inpatients from nine tertiary public hospitals in Yunnan and Shanghai, China, were retrospectively included, of which 431 patients diagnosed between February 2023 and July 2023 were divided into post-COVID-19 group, while the remaining 326 patients diagnosed between November 2018 and April 2019 were divided into pre-COVID-19 group. A 1:1 propensity-score matching (PSM) was adopted to balance demographic differences between pre- and post-COVID-19 groups, and then compared the severity across these two groups based on clinical and laboratory indicators. Additionally, a subgroup analysis in the original post-COVID-19 group (without PSM) was performed to investigate the independent risk factors for severe H1N1 infection in post-COIVD-19 era. Specifically, Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was applied to select candidate predictors, and logistic regression was used to further identify independent risk factors, thus establishing a prediction model. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and calibration curve were utilized to assess discriminative capability and accuracy of the model, while decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to determine the clinical usefulness of the model. RESULTS: After PSM, the post-COVID-19 group showed longer fever duration, higher fever peak, more frequent cough and seizures, as well as higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-10, creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and fibrinogen, higher mechanical ventilation rate, longer length of hospital stay (LOS), as well as higher proportion of severe H1N1 infection (all P < 0.05), compared to the pre-COVID-19 group. Moreover, age, BMI, fever duration, leucocyte count, lymphocyte proportion, proportion of CD3+ T cells, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and IL-10 were confirmed to be independently associated with severe H1N1 infection in post-COVID-19 era. A prediction model integrating these above eight variables was established, and this model had good discrimination, accuracy, and clinical practicability. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric H1N1 infection during post-COVID-19 era showed a higher overall disease severity than the classical H1N1 infection in pre-COVID-19 period. Meanwhile, cough and seizures were more prominent in children with H1N1 infection during post-COVID-19 era. Clinicians should be aware of these changes in such patients in clinical work. Furthermore, a simple and practical prediction model was constructed and internally validated here, which showed a good performance for predicting severe H1N1 infection in post-COVID-19 era.

To investigate the efficacy of laser acupuncture and photobiomodulation therapy in alleviating symptoms among patients diagnosed with Bell's palsy with duration of greater than 8 weeks. The randomized controlled trial has been performed from May 2021 to April 2023. Patients were eligible who had Bell's palsy with duration of greater than 8 weeks on out-patient Department of Otorhinolaryngology in Beijing Tongren Hospital. The laser acupuncture group received class IV laser treatment for 3 times per weeks, a total of 72 times. The control group received the same treatment procedure except the laser parameter. The primary outcome measures comprised House-Brackmann facial nerve grading system and electroneurography. Secondary outcome measures comprised Sunnybrook facial grading system, electromyography, and the blink reflex. A total of 84 participants were included (42 control group, 42 laser acupuncture group). After treatment, House-Brackmann facial nerve grading system (OR, 0.11; 95% CI, 0.04-0.30; P < 0.001), and the pathologic numbers of electroneuronography were statistically different between the laser acupuncture group and control group, including orbicularis oculi (OR,0.08; 95% CI, 0.02-0.21; P < 0.001), Frontalis muscle (OR,0.14; 95% CI, 0.05-0.39; P < 0.001), Orbicularis oris (OR,0.13; 95% CI, 0.04-0.36; P < 0.001), Ala nasi muscle (OR,0.06; 95% CI, 0.02-0.18; P < 0.001). In secondary outcomes, Sunnybrook facial grading system, has significant difference between the two groups (20.26; 95% CI, 14.69 to 25.83; P < 0.01). Latency by ENoG, include orbicularis oculi (-0.61; 95% CI, -0.43 to -0.09; P < 0.001), frontalis muscle (-0.12; 95% CI, -0.21 to -0.03; P < 0.01), orbicularis oris (-0.28; 95% CI, -0.41 to -0.16; P < 0.001), and ala nasi muscle (-0.26; 95% CI, -0.38 to -0.16; P < 0.001). All amplitudes of MUAPs and durations by electromyography (EMG) showed statistically significant differences compared with the control group after treatment. For the frontalis muscle, the amplitude of MUAPs was -64.23 (95% CI, -80.89 to -47.56; P < 0.001) and duration was -1.18 (95% CI, -1.49 to -0.87; P < 0.001). For orbicularis oris, amplitude of MUAPs was -29.82 (95% CI, -55.03 to -4.62; P = 0.02) and duration was -0.57 (95% CI, -0.94 to -0.20; P < 0.001). For depressor angulli oris, amplitude of MUAPs was -47.06 (95% CI, -62.15 to -31.97; P < 0.001) and duration was -2.21 (95% CI, -2.69 to -1.72; P < 0.001). Blink reflex, including R1 (OR, 0.03; 95% CI, 0.01-0.16; P < .001), R2 (OR, 0.04; 95% CI, 0.004-0.29; P < .001), and R2 latency differences (OR, 0.15; 95% CI, 0.05-0.51; P < .001), have significant difference between the two groups, respectively. The findings suggest that laser acupuncture relieve symptoms for patients with Bell's palsy with a duration of greater than 8 weeks.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05846217.

BACKGROUND: Serrated polyps are considered the precursor lesions of colorectal cancer through the serrated pathway. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate and discuss the clinical and endoscopic characteristics and management of serrated polyps. METHODS: The data of 220 cases with serrated polyps between September 2018 and November 2021 in Shenzhen People's Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Of all these cases, 32 were hyperplastic polyps, 36 were traditional serrated adenomas, 126 were sessile serrated lesions, 25 were SSLs with dysplasia, and one was an unclassified serrated adenoma. Although most patients were males aged ≥50 years and most serrated polyps were located in the distal colon and rectum with a size of 6-10 mm and the shape of type 0-Is, there was no significant difference (P > 0.05). Serrated polyps of ≤5 mm in size and type 0-IIa were mostly removed by cold biopsy forceps. Cold snare polypectomy was primarily used for those of 6-10 mm in size. Endoscopic mucosal resection was used for those of 6-20 mm, and endoscopic submucosal dissection was used for those of ≥20 mm (P < 0.05). All complications occurred in SSL patients with or without dysplasia (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Clinical and endoscopic characteristics were beneficial for distinguishing and diagnosing serrated polyps. In addition, management options were crucial to prevent recurrence and progression. However, the detection rate of serrated polyps was relatively low. Therefore, prospective multicenter studies with large samples are necessary to better assess colorectal serrated polyps.

Mulberry crinkle leaf virus (MCLV) is a member of the genus Mulcrilevirus, family Geminiviridae. The expression and functions of the V4 and V5 genes encoded by the MCLV genome remain unknown. Here, we confirmed the expression of V4 and V5 by analyzing the V4 and V5 mRNAs and the promoter activity of individual ORFs upstream sequences. The functions of V4 and V5 were investigated by constructing Agrobacterium-mediated infectious clones of wild-type MCLV variant П (MCLV vII), MCLVwt and MCLV vП mutants, such as MCLVmV4 (start codon of V4 ORF mutated), MCLVdV4 (5'-end partial deletion of V4 ORF sequence) and MCLVmV5 (V5 ORF start codon mutated). Although MCLVwt, MCLVmV4, and MCLVdV4 could infect natural host mulberry and experimental tomato plants systematically, the replication of the MCLVmV4 and MCLVdV4 genomes was obviously reduced compared to MCLVwt in both mulberry and tomato plants. MCLV vП expressing V5 could infect Nicotiana benthamiana plants systematically, but MCLVmV5 could not, implying that V5 is needed for MCLV vП to infect N. benthamiana plants. Taken together, V4 is involved in replication of the MCLV genome in host plants, and V5 potentially might extend the host range. Our findings lay a foundation for in-depth insight into the functions of MCLV-encoded proteins and provide a novel perspective for the subsequent study of MCLV-host plant interactions.

Abundant high-molecular-mass hyaluronic acid (HMM-HA) contributes to cancer resistance and possibly to the longevity of the longest-lived rodent-the naked mole-rat1,2. To study whether the benefits of HMM-HA could be transferred to other animal species, we generated a transgenic mouse overexpressing naked mole-rat hyaluronic acid synthase 2 gene (nmrHas2). nmrHas2 mice showed an increase in hyaluronan levels in several tissues, and a lower incidence of spontaneous and induced cancer, extended lifespan and improved healthspan. The transcriptome signature of nmrHas2 mice shifted towards that of longer-lived species. The most notable change observed in nmrHas2 mice was attenuated inflammation across multiple tissues. HMM-HA reduced inflammation through several pathways, including a direct immunoregulatory effect on immune cells, protection from oxidative stress and improved gut barrier function during ageing. These beneficial effects were conferred by HMM-HA and were not specific to the nmrHas2 gene. These findings demonstrate that the longevity mechanism that evolved in the naked mole-rat can be exported to other species, and open new paths for using HMM-HA to improve lifespan and healthspan.

Exposure to environmental heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) is often linked to neurotoxicity but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here we show that Arrestin domain-containing protein 1 (ARRDC1)-mediated microvesicles (ARMMs)--an important class of extracellular vesicles (EVs) whose biogenesis occurs at the plasma membrane--protect against Cd-induced neurotoxicity. Cd increased the production of EVs, including ARMMs, in a human neural progenitor cell line, ReNcell CX (ReN) cells. ReN cells that lack ARMMs production as a result of CRISPR-mediated ARRDC1 knockout were more susceptible to Cd toxicity as evidenced by increased LDH production as well as elevated level of oxidative stress markers. Importantly, adding ARMMs back to the ARRDC1-knockout ReN cells significantly reduced Cd-induced toxicity. Consistent with this finding, proteomics data showed that anti-oxidative stress proteins are enriched in ARMMs secreted from ReN cells. Together our study reveals a novel protective role of ARMMs in Cd neurotoxicity and suggests that ARMMs may be used therapeutically to reduce neurotoxicity caused by exposure to Cd and potentially other metal toxicants.

The choice of treatment and prognosis evaluation depend on the accurate early diagnosis of brain tumors. Many brain tumors go undiagnosed or are overlooked by clinicians as a result of the challenges associated with manually evaluating magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images in clinical practice. In this study, we built a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for glioma detection, grading, segmentation, and knowledge discovery based on artificial intelligence algorithms. Neuroimages are specifically represented using a type of visual feature known as the histogram of gradients (HOG). Then, through a two-level classification framework, the HOG features are employed to distinguish between healthy controls and patients, or between different glioma grades. This CAD system also offers tumor visualization using a semi-automatic segmentation tool for better patient management and treatment monitoring. Finally, a knowledge base is created to offer additional advice for the diagnosis of brain tumors. Based on our proposed two-level classification framework, we train models for glioma detection and grading, achieving area under curve (AUC) of 0.921 and 0.806, respectively. Different from other systems, we integrate these diagnostic tools with a web-based interface, which provides the flexibility for system deployment.

The whole genome sequence of mulberry crinivirus (MuCV), a novel member of the genus Crinivirus (family Closteroviridae) identified in mulberry (Morus alba L), was determined. The virus possesses a bipartite genome. RNA1 contains 8571 nucleotides (nt) with four open reading frames (ORFs). ORF1a encodes a putative polyprotein with papain-like protease, methyltransferase, and RNA helicase domains. ORF1b putatively encodes an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), which is probably expressed via a + 1 ribosomal frameshift. RNA2 consists of 8082 nt, containing eight ORFs that are similar in size and position to orthologous genes of other criniviruses. Phylogenetic analysis based on RdRp amino acid sequences of criniviruses placed MuCV in group 1.

Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorder that predominantly threatens preterm newborns. Succinate is an emerging metabolic signaling molecule that was recently studied in relation to the regulation of intestinal immunity and homeostasis. We aimed to investigate the relationship between NEC and gut luminal succinate and preliminarily explored the effect of succinate on NEC pathogenesis. Methods: Fecal samples from human neonates and mouse pups were analyzed by HPLC - MS/MS and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into four groups: control, NEC, Lsuc, and Hsuc. The mortality, weight gain, and intestinal pathological changes in four mouse groups were observed. Inflammatory cytokines and markers of macrophages were identified by quantitative real-time PCR. Succinate receptor 1 (SUCNR1) localization was visualized by immunohistochemistry. The protein levels of SUCNR1 and hypoxia-inducible factor 1a (HIF-1a) were quantified by western blotting. Results: The levels of succinate in feces from NEC patients were higher than those in feces from non-NEC patients (P <0.05). In the murine models, succinate levels in intestinal content samples were also higher in the NEC group than in the control group (P <0.05). The change in succinate level was closely related to intestinal flora composition. In samples from human neonates, relative to the control group, the NEC group showed a higher abundance of Enterobacteriaceae and a lower abundance of Lactobacillaceae and Lactobacillus (P <0.05). In the murine models, relative to the control group, increased abundance was observed for Clostridiaceae, Enterococcaceae, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, and Enterococcus, whereas decreased abundance was observed for Lactobacillaceae and Lactobacillus (P <0.05). Increased succinate levels prevented mice from gaining weight, damaged their intestines, and increased their mortality; upregulated the gene expression of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), IL-6, IL-18 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF); and downregulated the gene expression of IL-10 and transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß. Exogenous succinic acid increased inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene expression but decreased Arginase-1 (Arg1) gene expression; and increased the protein expression of SUCNR1 and HIF-1a. Conclusion: Succinate plays an important role in the development of necrotizing enterocolitis severity, and the activation of the HIF-1a signaling pathway may lead to disease progression.

Ophiostoma bicolor is a pathogenic fungus associated with bark beetles that can cause serious damage to host plants. In this study, a novel fungal virus, "Ophiostoma bicolor endornavirus 1" (ObEV1), was obtained from O. bicolor, and its complete genome sequence was determined. ObEV1 has a single-stranded positive-sense (+ ss) RNA genome of 10,119 nucleotides. Sequence annotation and comparison showed that the viral genome has a single large open reading frame (ORF) encoding a polyprotein of 362.48 kDa. The polyprotein contains seven conserved domains: RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), viral RNA helicase 1 (VHel1), viral methyltransferase (VMet), DEAD-like helicase (DEXDc), gliding-GltJ (G1), large tegument protein UL36 (PHA), and YlqF-related-GTPase (Y). Sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analysis showed that ObEV1 is a novel mycovirus belonging to the genus Betaendornavirus of the family Endornaviridae. This is the first report of a mycovirus in the ophiostomatoid fungus O. bicolor.

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively analyze the efficacy and safety of ruxolitinib therapy for children with thalassemia after unrelated or haploidentical stem cell transplantation. METHODS: From March 2020 to March 2021, 22 patients received successfully allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the Zhongshan Hospital of Xiamen University, from +30 to 100 days,those patients received ruxolitinib therapy (2.5 mg, twice daily) and all adverse reactions were observed, include aGVHD, cGVHD, CMV and EBV infection. RESULTS: 22 patients underwent allogeneic stem cell transplantation, 5 patients were diagnosed as aGVHD, 3 patients had grade I-II skin GVHD and 2 patients had grade II intestinal GVHD, those patients were cured. All patients were followed up for more than 21 weeks, 4 cases developed cGVHD, including 3 cases of localized liver GVHD and 1 case of pulmonary GVHD, those were relieved after active treatment. 8 patients had elevated EBV copies (>3×103/ml), and 3 patients had increased CMV copies, the patients recovered after immunosuppressant and antiviral treatment. There was no CMV infection and EBV related post-transplantant lymphoproliferative disorders(PTLD), and no transplant related deaths. CONCLUSION: Ruxolitinib can effectively reduce the incidence and severity of GVHD without affecting the hematopoietic recovery, and improve the survival status of thalassemia children after transplantation.

Aims: To examine the predictive value of serum biomarkers combined with other indicators for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) surgery decision-making. Methods: Clinical data, including baseline information, clinical features, imaging presentation and serum assessment, of the infants enrolled were collected, and the serum concentrations of HBD2, HMGB-1, Claudin-3 and Relmß were determined. Student's t test, the Mann-Whitney U test, the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were also generated. Results: Forty-nine infants were enrolled, with 23 in the surgical NEC group and 26 in the medical NEC group. There were no differences in the baseline clinical information, including birth weight, gestational age, admission age and risk factors, during pregnancy and before enrollment (P > 0.05). Peritonitis, intestinal adhesion and sepsis were more common in the surgical group (P < 0.05). The incidences of abdominal distention, abdominal wall tenseness, abdominal tenderness and absent bowel sounds in the surgical group were significantly higher when NEC occurred (P < 0.05). There were no differences between the two groups in the imaging presentation (P > 0.05). The concentration of Relmß {[8.66 (4.29, 19.28) vs. 20.65 (9.51, 44.65)]} in the surgical group was significantly higher (P < 0.05). Abdominal wall tenseness, abdominal tenderness and a Relmß concentration > 19.7 µmol/L were included in the predictive model, and the AUC of the predictive score was 0.943 (95% CI: 0.891-1.000) (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Serum Relmß concentration combined with abdominal wall tenseness and abdominal tenderness may be useful in determining surgical timing in neonates with NEC.

BACKGROUND: CCAAT/Enhancer Binding Protein D (CEBPD), a pleiotropic glucocorticoid-responsive transcription factor, modulates inflammatory responses. Of relevance to asthma, expression of CEBPD in airway smooth muscle (ASM) increases with glucocorticoid exposure. We sought to characterize CEBPD-mediated transcriptomic responses to glucocorticoid exposure in ASM by measuring changes observed after knockdown of CEBPD and its impact on asthma-related ASM function. METHODS: Primary ASM cells derived from four donors were transfected with CEBPD or non-targeting (NT) siRNA and exposed to vehicle control, budesonide (100 nM, 18 h), TNFα (10 ng/ml, 18 h), or both budesonide and TNFα. Subsequently, RNA-Seq was used to measure gene expression levels, and pairwise differential expression results were obtained for exposures versus vehicle and knockdown versus control conditions. Weighted gene co-expression analysis was performed to identify groups of genes with similar expression patterns across the various experimental conditions (i.e., CEBPD knockdown status, exposures). RESULTS: CEBPD knockdown altered expression of 3037 genes under at least one exposure (q-value < 0.05). Co-expression analysis identified sets of 197, 152 and 290 genes that were correlated with CEBPD knockdown status, TNFα exposure status, and both, respectively. JAK-STAT signaling pathway genes, including IL6R and SOCS3, were among those influenced by both TNFα and CEBPD knockdown. Immunoblot assays revealed that budesonide-induced IL-6R protein expression and augmented IL-6-induced STAT3 phosphorylation levels were attenuated by CEBPD knockdown in ASM. CONCLUSIONS: CEBPD modulates glucocorticoid responses in ASM, in part via modulation of IL-6 receptor signaling.

BACKGROUND: BCR-ABL1 fusion gene is associated with a poor prognosis and a high incidence in central nervous system (CNS) leukemia. CNS invasion which detected at the initial diagnosis is commonly with bone marrow infiltration. It is uncommon for the leukemia cells to be located primarily in the CNS without bone marrow involvement. CASE SUMMARY: We here report the rare initial presentation of CNS-restricted BCR-ABL-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia in a 30-year-old female patient who clinically manifested with leukemic meningitis, with no involvement in peripheral blood or bone marrow. Identification of abnormal phenotypes of blast cells, and BCR-ABL1 rearrangement in the cerebrospinal fluid alone established the diagnosis of primary CNS-isolated acute lymphocytic leukemia. The patient received a combination of intrathecal therapy and high-dose chemotherapy. But the benefits of the treatments were short-lived and she experienced recurrence. CONCLUSION: Flow cytometry in combination with molecular genetic analysis improved diagnostic accuracy. New approaches that may enhance the efficacy of the existing therapies and cure CNS leukemia are required.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the difference of therapeutic effects on children with thalassemia at different age after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. METHODS: The clinical data of children with thalassemia treated in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed. The children were divided into 2-5 years old group and 6-12 years old group. The success rate of implantation, transplant-related mortality, GVHD incidence, and other transplant-related complications, as well as thalassemia-free survival (TFS) were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The incidence of GVHD, hemorrhagic cystitis and severe oral mucositis after transplantation in the 2-5 years old group were significantly lower than those in the 6-12 years old group, while there was no statistically significant difference in the TFS between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Children in the low age (2-5 years old) group show fewer complications and higher quality of life after transplantation, therefore, stem cell transplantation at 2-5 years old is more conducive to rehabilitation of the children with thalassemia.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical efficacy of haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) by using parental donors on thalassemia patients. METHODS: The 13 thalassemia patients treated by haplo-HSCT using parental donors in our hospital from July 1, 2016, to July 1, 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Hematopoiesis reconstitution, the incidence of GVHD, infections and the long-term survival of the patients were analyzed. RESULTS: Twelve of the 13 patients were successfully implanted, the success rate of implantation was 92.3%. The median time of neutrophil and platelet engraftment was 12.5 days (range, 9-22 days) and 21 days (range,12-34 days), respectively. One patient achieved primary graft failure. Three (25%) patients developed to acute GVHD (aGVHD) and achieved complete remission after treatment. Chronic GVHD developed in three (25%) patients, one of them was extensive and under treatment, while one patient developed to severe bacterial infection (7.7%). CMV viremia was diagnosed in two patients (15.4%). There were no patients developed to CMV disease. Three (23.1%) patients achieved EB viremia after transplantation, one of them developed to EBV-related lymphocytic proliferative disease, while there were no patients showed invasive fungal infection. At the last follow-up, all patients survived, twelve of them were free from transfusion dependency. There were no transplant-related deaths. Projected overall and thalassemia-free survival at three years was 100% and 92.3%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The transplant protocol of haplo-HSCT by using parental donors in patients with thalassemia has reliable source of donors, high incidence of successful implantation and low incidence of GVHD, which can be used as an effective way to increase the source of donors in children with thalassemia.

INTRODUCTION: The efficacy of dexmedetomidine supplementation for thoracoscopic surgery remains controversial. We conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the impact of dexmedetomidine for thoracoscopic surgery. METHODS: We have searched PubMed, EMbase, Web of science, EBSCO, and Cochrane library databases through September 2020 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effect of dexmedetomidine supplementation on thoracoscopic surgery. This meta-analysis is performed using the random-effect model. RESULTS: Six RCTs involving 510 patients are included in the meta-analysis. Overall, compared with control group for thoracoscopic surgery, dexmedetomidine supplementation results in significantly reduced pain scores (SMD = - 1.50; 95% CI = - 2.63-- 0.37; P = 0.009), anesthetic consumption (SMD = - 3.91; 95% CI = - 6.76-- 1.05; P = 0.007), mean heart rate (SMD = - 0.41; 95% CI = - 0.65-- 0.18; P = 0.0007), and the risk ratio (RR) of ICU stay (RR = 0.39; 95% CI = 0.19-0.80; P = 0.01), but showed no obvious effect on mean blood pressure (SMD = - 0.07; 95% CI = - 0.45-0.31; P = 0.72) or hospital stay (SMD = - 0.61; 95% CI = - 1.30-0.08; P = 0.08). CONCLUSIONS: Dexmedetomidine supplementation can substantially improve the analgesic efficacy for thoracoscopic surgery.

Purpose: To identify risk factors associated with the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in infants with early onset sepsis (EOS) and to describe the clinical features. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between January 2000 and October 2020. The infants were divided into ARDS and non-ARDS groups. Clinical characteristics and risk factors were compared between the two groups. Results: Two hundred fifty infants (58 with ARDS) were included. Smaller gestational age, lower birth weight (LBW), lower serum albumin level, a higher rate of preterm birth, premature rupture of membranes, antenatal steroid exposure, and lower Apgar score were associated with an increased development of ARDS by univariate analysis (P < 0.05). LBW (ß = -0.001, P = 0.000, OR: 0.999, 95% CI: 0.998-0.999) and low serum albumin levels (ß = -0.063, P = 0.022, OR: 0.939, 95% CI: 0.889-0.991) were identified as independent risk factors for the development of ARDS by logistic regression analysis. A higher frequency of complications, including persistent pulmonary hypertension, intraventricular hemorrhage, pulmonary hemorrhage, septic shock, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, was found in the ARDS group (P < 0.05). The rate of mortality was higher for those in the ARDS group than for those in the non-ARDS group (46.6% vs. 15.6%, χ2 = 24.205, P = 0.000). Conclusion: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in EOS could lead to a higher frequency of complications and mortality. The risk factors for the development of ARDS were LBW and low serum albumin levels.

In this work, a simple and versatile Schiff base chemosensor (L) was developed for the detection of four adjacent row 4 metal ions (Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) through colorimetric or fluorescent analyses. L could recognize the target ions in solutions containing a wide range of other cations and anions. The recognition mechanisms were verified with a Job's plot, HR-MS assays, and 1H NMR titration experiments. Then, L was employed to develop colorimetric test strips and TLC plates for Co2+. Meanwhile, L was capable of quantitatively measuring the amount of target ions in tap water and river water samples. Notably, L was used for imaging Zn2+ in HepG2 cells, zebrafish, and tumor-bearing mice, which demonstrated its potential biological applications. Therefore, L can probably serve as a versatile tool for the detection of the target metal ions in environmental and biological applications.
