RESUMO

AIM: To explore the value of radiomics for predicting the expression of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) based on multiparameter spectral computed tomography (CT) images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 220 patients with NSCLC were enrolled retrospectively and divided into the training (n=176) and testing (n=44) cohorts. The radiomics features were extracted from the conventional CT images, mono-energy 40 keV images, iodine density (ID) maps, Z-effective maps, and electron density maps. The logistic regression (LR) and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms were employed to build models based on radiomics signatures. The prediction abilities were qualified by the area under the curve (AUC) obtained from the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Internal validation was performed on the independent testing dataset. RESULTS: The combined model for PD-L1 ≥1%, which consisted of the radiomics score (rad-score; p<0.0001), white blood cell (WBC; p=0.027) counts, and air bronchogram (p=0.003), reached the highest performance with the AUCs of 0.873 and 0.917 in the training and testing dataset, respectively, which was better than the radiomics model with the AUCs of 0.842 and 0.886. The combined model for PD-L1 ≥50%, which consisted of rad-score (p<0.0001) and WBC counts (p=0.027), achieved the highest performance in the training and testing dataset with AUCs of 0.932 and 0.903, respectively, which was better than the radiomics model with AUCs of 0.920 and 0.892, respectively. CONCLUSION: The radiomics model based on the multiparameter images of spectral CT can predict the expression level of PD-L1 in NSCLC. The combined model can obtain higher prediction efficiency and serves as a promising method for immunotherapy selection.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical efficacy of modified sacral fixation under Leonardo da Vinci robot laparoscopy for pelvic organ prolapse (POP). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty POP patients admitted to our hospital from January 2020 to December 2021 were picked and divided into Group A (laparoscopic Y-mesh, n = 20), Group B (laparoscopic sacrovaginal fixation, n = 20), and Group C (da Vinci robotic sacral fixation, n = 20). These three groups were compared in terms of the perioperative indexes, such as operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative indwelling catheter days, anal exhaust time, postoperative hospitalization days, etc. The occurrence of short-term and long-term complications in the three groups was compared. The changes of the following index values in the POP quantification system (POP -Q) staging before and 1 year after surgery were recorded and compared among the three groups. It mainly includes the midline of the anterior vaginal wall at 3 cm from the hymenal margin (Aa), the farthest point of the anterior vaginal vault from point Aa (Ba), the farthest point of the ectocervix (C), the location of the posterior vaginal vault or rectal uterine trap (D), the midline of the posterior vaginal wall at 3 cm from the hymenal margin (Ap), and the reflection of the posterior vaginal vault at the farthest point from the Ap point (Bp) values. The changes in Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory-Short Form 20 (PFDI-20) and Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Urinary Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire (PISQ-12) were recorded and compared before and 1 year after the operation. RESULTS: The patients in Group C had significantly lower intraoperative bleeding, postoperative indwelling catheter days, anal exhaust time, and postoperative hospitalization days compared with those in Group A and Group B (p < 0.05). There existed no statistical difference in the incidence of short-term and long-term complications between Group B and Group C (p > 0.05), but both were much lower than Group A (p < 0.05). The differences in POP-Q staging, PFDI-20 scale, and PISQ-12 scale were not statistically significant among the three groups before surgery (p > 0.05), and the POP-Q staging Aa, Ba, C, D, Ap, and Bp values, PFDI-20 scale, and PISQ-12 scale were strongly improved in three groups after the surgery (p < 0.05). However, the POP-Q staging, PFDI-20 scale, and PISQ-12 scale among the three groups had no obvious difference after the surgery (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy of modified sacral fixation under Leonardo da Vinci robot laparoscopy for POP was comparable to that of laparoscopic Y-mesh treatment and laparoscopic sacral vaginal fixation. However, da Vinci's robotic sacral fixation had the advantages of less intraoperative bleeding and faster postoperative recovery, which helped patients recover quickly and improved their quality of life.

RESUMO

Objective: To explore the relationship between the expression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) in core needle biopsy (CNB) specimens before neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and post NAC Residual Cancer Burden (RCB) classification in breast cancer. Methods: This retrospective study included 150 patients with CNB proven invasive breast carcinoma in the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University from January 2013 to January 2014. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used to detect the expression of HER2 in the CNB specimens. RCB was used to assess the chemotherapy response of patients. SPSS 21.00 and GraphPad Prism 8.0.1 were used for data statistics; Chi square test and Fisher's exact test for correlation analysis, and Cox regression for survival analysis. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Among the 150 patients, there were 38 RCB-0, 12 RCB-Ⅰ, 61 RCB-Ⅱ and 39 RCB-Ⅲ post NAC. RCB-0 meant pathological complete response (PCR). Statistical analysis found that the pre NAC HER2 expression was related to PCR and RCB classification after surgery (r1=‒0.217,r2=‒0.282;P<0.05). Further analysis demonstrated that in the HER2-positive group, PCR was associated with prolonged OS and DFS (HR=2.939, 2.359; P<0.05); the differences of OS and DFS in RCB classifications were more significant (P<0.05) in the HER2 positive than HER2 negative groups. Conclusion: There is a correlation between pre NAC HER2 expression and PCR and RCB classification after treatment. In HER2-positive patients, the prognostic stratification of RCB classification is more obvious, suggesting that pre NAC HER2 overexpression combined with RCB classification after surgery can more accurately predict the prognosis.

RESUMO

Objective: To compare the clinical and histopathological characteristics of cervical adenoid basal cell carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma for improving the diagnosis accuracy and differential diagnosis of these tumors. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 9 cases of cervical adenoid basal cell carcinoma and 3 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma which were diagnosed and consulted at the First Medical Center of PLA General Hospital from March 2009 to April 2019. Detailed clinical data were reviewed. All pathological sections and immunohistochemical results were reviewed and the clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. Follow-up information by telephone was collected and relevant literature was consulted. Results: Both tumors were more commonly found in postmenopausal women (the age of onset ranged 43-74 years). Adenoid basal cell carcinoma was often clinical asymptomatic. Most of them presented as abnormal smears of the cervix during physical examination, and there was no definite mass in colposcopy.Adenoid cystic carcinoma was mostly presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding. A mass was seen in colposcopy.Histologically, the two tumors were characterized by nest-like growth of the tumors, consisting of basal-like tumor cells, and often surrounded by palisade structures. The two lesions might coexist, or be mixed with squamous cell carcinoma or high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. The difference was that adenoid basal cell carcinoma was mostly located at the junction of cervical squamous epithelium and columnar epithelium and beneath the overlying epithelium, the tumor cells were arranged in nests, with squamous differentiation in the center of the nests, or in double-layer adenoid arrangement. The cell morphology was bland with occasional mitoses, and the stromal reaction was not obvious. And adenoid cystic carcinoma cells in the nest arranged like a sieve, the homogenous red-stained and blue-stained secretions were observed in the sieve holes, with obvious cell atypia, frequent mitoses, and obvious stromal reaction. In one case of adenoid cystic carcinoma, sarcomatoid area presented around the nests. Both of them were positive in clinical HPV test. Among the 9 cases of adenoid basal cell carcinoma, 3 were tested for HPV and 5 were tested for p16, and all showed positive expression. Among the 3 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma, 2 were tested for HPV and 3 were tested for p16, both of which showed positive expression. Telephone follow-up was conducted by June 2019(follow-up time ranged 2-37 months). No recurrence or metastasis occurred in 7 of the 9 cases of adenoid basal cell carcinoma, while 1 case had a ground-glass nodule in lung and another had recurrence of vaginal stump 32 months after the surgery. One case of adenoid cystic carcinoma developed lung metastasis 8 months after surgery and died 2 years after surgery; another case was followed up for 6 months, which showed no recurrence or metastasis; the third case was lost to follow-up. Conclusions: Both adenoid cystic carcinoma and adenoid basal cell carcinoma of the cervix are the tumors originating from cervical reserve cells and are associated with high-risk HPV infection. Due to the differences in clinical treatment and prognosis, careful histological evaluation and immunohistochemical analysis should be carried out to make accurate pathological diagnosis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Severe hip osteoarthritis, caused by bone or joint maldevelopment, biomechanical transformation and previous surgical intervention, is inclusively existed in spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia (SED). To investigate and discuss the short-term efficacy and possible effects of total hip arthroplasty in the treatment of Tönnis grade 3 hip osteoarthritis in patients with SED. METHODS: From January 2017 to June 2019, 374 patients with hip osteoarthritis were involved for total hip arthroplasty conducted by senior professional surgeons, of whom 9 patients (6 males and 3 females) with 12 hip osteoarthritis secondary to the SED met the inclusive and exclusive criteria and received the above-mentioned hip operation. The short-term outcomes were observed. RESULTS: All the patients were implanted with Johnson & Johnson ceramic on ceramic cementless hip prostheses within the arthroplasty. They were followed up for an average period of 20 months. Except for one muscular calf vein thrombosis case, no complications, such as aseptic loosening, joint dislocation, fracture, neurovascular injury, deep vein thrombosis and infection were observed in all the 9 patients. Before the surgery, the average Harris hip score was 35.55, while the average of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index (WOMAC) was 56.56. The level of quality of life indicated by SF-12 score was 41.56 on average. The mean pre-operation visual analogue scale (VAS) was 7.44. At the last follow-up, the average Harris hip score increased to 89.56, whereas the average WOMAC declined to 41.11. Compared with the baseline point, the average SF-12 score went up to 56.33. Dramatic drop of the mean VAS value to 2.67 was also observed at the last follow-up. In addition, post-operative increase of several pelvic-related parameters including pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt and sacral slope could be observed in the SED patients. The average measured pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt and sacral slope were 68.95°±4.60°, 52.75°±1.06° and 17.45°±1.77° before operation, respectively; whilst the mean value of these specific parameters increased to 76.98°±5.12°, 60.51°±4.35° and 18.10°±2.02°, respectively. The even leg lengths of the lower extremities were obtained after total hip arthroplasty. CONCLUSION: Total hip arthroplasty is satisfactory in the short-term pain relieve and function recovery for the management of Tönnis grade 3 hip osteoarthritis secondary to the SED.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the clinical and histopathological features of cervical basal squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC). Methods: A retrospective analysis of 10 cases of cervical BSCC was carried out. The clinical data and all the pathological sections were reviewed, the related immunohistochemical results were statistically analyzed, the clinicopathological features were analyzed, and then followed the prognosis. Results: (1) Clinical features: the median onset age of BSCC in cervix was 51 years old (ranged 35-69 years old), 5 of them were postmenopausal women. Vaginal bleeding was often seen in clinic (7 cases). Of the 10 cervical BSCC patients, 5 tested HPV types. All of them were HPV positive, including 2 cases of HPV 16 positive and 1 case of high-risk HPV positive. At the time of colposcopy, 3 cases showed exogenous nodular mass, 3 cases showed endogenous infiltrating mass, and 4 cases had unclear type of mass.(2)Treatment: of the 10 patients, 8 underwent hysterectomy+bilateral adnexal excision+pelvic lymphadenectomy, of which 6 underwent radiotherapy or chemotherapy after operation.Radiotherapy and chemotherapy were performed only in 2 cases. (3) Pathological features: histologically, the tumor cells were nests and stripe like growth, which were composed of basal like tumor cells. The cells had obvious heteromorphosis, less cytoplasm, deep dyed nuclei and common nuclear mitosis, and there were often palisade like structures around the cell nests, and some cells in the center of the cell nests were found to have acne like necrosis. It could be mixed with normal squamous cell carcinoma and squamous epithelial lesion. Among the 10 patients, 6 had immunohistochemical results. BSCC mainly expressed p16 and squamous cell markers such as p63, cytokeratin (CK) 5/6 and p40 protein, the positive expression rates were 3/3, 3/3, 2/2 and 3/3, respectively. A few expressed CK7 protein, and the positive expression rate was 1/3. (4) Prognosis: follow-up time ranged from 1 week to 64 months, and 2 cases were lost to follow-up. Among the 8 follow-up patients, 3 had iliac bone, lung or skin metastasis, and 5 had no recurrence or metastasis during the follow-up period. Conclusions: BSCC of cervix is a rare malignant tumor of cervix associated with high-risk HPV infection, p16 is more positive. The treatment is similar to that of normal cervical squamous cell carcinoma. Surgical resection and radiotherapy and chemotherapy are the most effective methods according to the clinical stage. At present, the disease is considered to be highly aggressive and the poor prognosis.

RESUMO

Objective: To compare different specimen types of lung adenocarcinoma in the detection of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene and to correlate EGFR mutations with patient clinical features. Methods: One hundred lung adenocarcinoma cases were collected from June to December in 2015, at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University.Of the 100 lung adenocarcinoma samples, 43 were male and 57 were female. The age was from 40 to 88 years old, and the average age was 66 years. One hundred lung adenocarcinoma cases were divided equally into two groups. Mutation analysis of EGFR gene by real-time PCR was performed using biopsied tissue and paired blood samples in one group (n=50) and using pleural effusion and paired blood samples in the other group (n=50). Results: The mutation rate of EGFR gene in biopsy samples was 54% (27/50) , higher than that of blood samples (46%, 23/50), but without statistical differences (χ(2)=0.640, P=0.424). In contrast, mutation rate of EGFR gene in pleural effusion samples (42%, 21/50) was higher than that of blood samples (34%, 17/50), but without statistical differences(χ(2)=0.679, P=0.409). Two patients had EGFR mutation detected in paired blood samples but not in the corresponding biopsy samples, and four patients had EGFR mutation detected in pleural effusion samples but not in their paired blood samples. The mean progression-free survival of patients with detectable EGFR mutation were 9.5 months (tissue samples), 8.6 months (pleural effusion) and 8.5 months (blood). However, there was no statistical difference. Conclusions: Blood samples may be used to assess EGFR mutations for patients with lung adenocarcinoma. However, further studies are needed to improve the sensitivity and accuracy in the detection of EGFR mutations using blood samples.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have revealed that long noncoding RNA DQ786243 (DQ786243) plays an important role in the development of gastric cancer (GC) and colorectal cancer. However, the expression and function of DQ786243 in GC patients remain largely unknown. The purpose of our study was to investigate the clinical significance of DQ786243 expression in GC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: qRT-PCR was used to examine DQ786243 expression in 172 paired GC samples and matched adjacent normal tissues. Besides, the relationship between DQ786243 expression and clinicopathologic characteristics was analyzed. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) curves of patients in subgroups were constructed by the Kaplan-Meier method. Multivariate regression analyses were performed to analyze independent factors affecting prognosis. RESULTS: We found a significant up-regulation of DQ786243 in GC tissues compared to normal tissues (p < 0.01). High DQ786243 expression was closely associated with invasion depth (p = 0.006), TNM stage (p = 0.009) and lymphatic metastasis (p = 0.017). Moreover, Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that patients with DQ786243 high expression tumors had worse OS (p = 0.0012) and PFS (p = 0.0002) compared to patients with DQ786243 low expression tumors. Finally, multivariate analysis showed that DQ786243 was a significant and independent prognostic predictor for both OS (p = 0.002) and PFS (p = 0.001) of GC patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest, for the first time, that the evaluation of the DQ786243 expression in GC tissues is a useful tool for predicting prognosis of GC.

RESUMO

The optical constants of vegetable oils and biodiesels are the basic input parameters in the study of the thermal radiation transfer and monitoring the productivity of vegetable oils converting to biodiesels. In this work, a combined ellipsometry-transmission method is presented to obtain the optical constants of palm oil and palm oil biodiesel between 20°C and 150°C in the spectral range 600-4100 cm-1 and to study the temperature effect on the optical constants. In the combined method, a modified ellipsometry method is used to measure the optical constants of palm oil and palm oil biodiesel for the whole researched wave bands. For the weak absorption regions in which the ellipsometry method cannot give precise absorption indices, the transmission method is conducted to get the absorption indices using the refractive indices obtained by the proposed ellipsometry method. Deionized water and methanol are taken as examples to verify the combined ellipsometry-transmission method. It is shown that the combined method can overcome the deficiencies of the traditional ellipsometry and transmission method, which can be used for the measurements of both strong and weak absorption wave bands. The experimental analyses indicate that temperature exerts a noticeable influence on the infrared optical constants of palm oil and palm oil biodiesel. With the increase of temperature, the refractive indices at certain wavenumbers decrease nearly linearly, and the amplitudes of dominant absorption peaks show a decreasing trend. The absorption peaks located around 3550 cm-1 show blueshift trends as temperature increases. Comparing these two kinds of oils, palm oil presents larger values in refractive indices and dominant absorption peaks.

RESUMO

Ameloblastoma is one of the most common benign odontogenic tumours of the mandible and the maxilla. Wide excision of the tumour is the first choice for treatment (except for unicystic ones). Patients with invaded margins or unresectable lesions may require radiotherapy. Today, permanent implantation of I125 seeds is widely used in the treatment of cancer of the head and neck. We report a case of recurrent ameloblastoma of the base of the skull that was treated with I125 brachytherapy. The outcome has been encouraging, with total disappearance of the tumour on positron emission tomography 18 months later.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed to investigate the impact of postoperative pituitary tumor adrenal insufficiency and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on tumor recurrence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The prospective study included 143 pituitary tumor patients as study subjects. Within 6 months after the operation, the study was planned to explore differences (if any) between the tumor recurrence rate of patients treated with hormone replacement therapy and the patients without hormone replacement therapy. Also, the relation of tumor reoccurrence was studied with pituitary tumor adrenal insufficiency. RESULTS: The age, gender of patients as well as the size of the tumor had no significant correlation with postoperative pituitary tumor adrenal insufficiency. Further, the short-term follow-up lasting for 0.5 to 2.5 years after the operation, the hormone replacement therapy of hydrogenation had no significant impact on tumor recurrence rate. CONCLUSIONS: The age, patient gender and the size of the tumor were not independent risk factors leading to postoperative pituitary tumor adrenal insufficiency. However, the occurrence rate of adrenal insufficiency of patients in high age group was higher than that of patients in low age group. Also, the occurrence rate of adrenal insufficiency of patients (whose one or several hormones dramatically decreased before the operation) was significantly higher than that of patients (whose hormone level did not decrease before the operation). So, the patients in high age group and whose one or several hormones dramatically decreased before the operation should be paid more attention to the condition of adrenal insufficiency and should be ready for hormone replacement.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the point mutation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene and clinicopathologic characteristics in patients with non-small cell lung cancers(NSCLC)of Xinjiang region. Methods: Five-hundred and eighty-two cases of paraffin-embedded tissue in patients with NSCLC were collected between January 2013 and December 2015 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University. The DNA was extracted from these tissues by Qiagen kit, to test thirty-two mutations in EGFR exons 18, 19, 20 and 21 using fluorescent quantitative qRT-PCR technology by TaqMan probe; the clinicopathologic features of patients were analyzed according to the mutation status of EGFR. Results: There were 173 cases with EGFR gene mutation in 582 cases of paraffin-embedded tissue in patients with NSCLC, and the mutation rate was 29.7%(173/582). There were statistical difference in female patients (50.5%, 98/194), no history of smoking(47.3%, 96/203), high differentiation(6/9), adenosquamous carcinoma(6/11), peripheral location (34.9%, 88/252), and surgical specimens(38.2%, 83/217), respectively (P<0.05). Multiple factors Logistic analysis showed that gender, degree of differentiation, and pathologic types had statistical differences to EGFR when α=0.05. There were no statistical differences between other variants. Conclusions: There are higher rate EGFR gene mutation in women patients, non-smokers, and well-differentiated, adenocarcinoma. Gender, degree of differentiation and pathological patterns are independent influencing factors on EGFR mutation status.

RESUMO

Gastric cancer (GC) is the leading malignancy in the digestive system. Versican is a ubiquitous component of the extracellular matrix and has a role in tumor progression. We aim to examine the expression of Versican in GC and the relationship between Versican levels and patient survival. We detected the mRNA expression of Versican in tumorous pairs and adjacent normal tissues (ANTs) of 78 GC patients by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The protein expression of Versican in 101 cases of matched GC and ANT, as well as in 27 intraepithelial neoplastic (IN) samples, was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. We analyzed the correlation between Versican levels and clinical outcomes. Finally, we performed CCK-8 cell counting assay and transwell assay in GC cell lines. Versican mRNA expression was significantly greater in tumor tissues (P<0.001) than in ANT. Versican was majorly expressed in the stroma surrounding tumor epithelium and minorly some areas of tumor epithelium. The Versican expression level was higher in GC than in ANT (P=0.004), but no significant difference was observed between ANT and IN (P=0.517). The Versican mRNA and protein levels were consistent in GC. High Versican mRNA and protein expression correlated with greater tumor invasion depth (P=0.030, P=0.027). Univariate and multivariate analysis revealed that patients with high Versican mRNA expression exhibited poor disease-specific survival (P<0.001). In vitro experiments showed that Versican overexpression promoted cell proliferation and invasion. Our data indicate that Versican may be a novel prognostic indicator in GC and may be a potential target for clinical diagnosis.

RESUMO

This paper describes the development and validation of a new reverse-phase liquid chromatography-electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometric method (RP-HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) for the determination of metaldehyde in different kinds of vegetables. Metaldehyde was extracted with 20 ml acetonitrile from 10 g vegetable and followed by dispersive solid-phase extraction (Bondesil-primary secondary amine, PSA). The identification of metaldehyde was established by chromatographic retention times, analyte-specific fragmentation patterns and relative peak area ratios of two precursor/product ion pairs. The limit of detection of this method was 0.01 mg kg(-1) using an injection volume of 5 µl. The repeatability of this method is excellent and the relative standard deviation (RSD) is less than 4%.

RESUMO

The slender, oval-shaped face is considered to be attractive in East Asia. To obtain the ideal contour of the midface, reduction malarplasty has been popularized in oriental countries in recent years. This report describes a surgical technique for reduction of the zygomatic body and arch. After labiobuccal vestibular incisions are made, the anterior zygomatic body and lateral orbital rim are exposed by subperiosteal dissection. Thereafter, an L-shaped osteotomy is performed. Two parallel horizontal osteotomies are made in the anterior part of the zygomatic body, and the middle bone segment is removed. The zygomatic arch root is fractured through a small sideburn incision just anterior to the articular tubercle. Finally, the freed zygomatic complex is medially repositioned and fixed with one or two bicortex screws. Operations on 32 patients demonstrated that this technique may be a sound method for malar complex reduction, with the advantages of simple manipulation, stable fixation, and less risk of a drooping face.

RESUMO

This study sought to evaluate the effects of intra-articular injection of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) suspended in hyaluronan (HA) on the cartilage and subchondral cancellous bone repair in osteoarthritis (OA) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Disc perforation was performed bilaterally in rabbit TMJs to induce OA. Four groups of animals (n=12) received OA induction only, and either intra-articular HA injection alone, intra-articular IGF-1 injection alone, or a combination of HA and IGF-1 injection. All therapy was begun 4 weeks after OA induction. The animals were killed 12 or 24 weeks after the first injection, for histology and micro-CT examinations. Two additional animals were used as normal controls. Typical cartilage and subchondral cancellous bone lesions were observed in the OA group. No protective effect on cartilage and subchondral cancellous bone was found in the HA or IGF-1 alone groups. Better histological repair and nearly normal micro-architectural properties of the subchondral cancellous bone were observed in the HA+IGF-1 group compared with the HA or IGF-1 alone groups. HA may be used as an effective carrier for intra-articular injection of IGF-1 and the combination of HA/IGF-1 shows promise as a new rational approach to therapy of TMJ OA.
