Objective: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is among the most common, yet treatable causes of infertility. This study explored how South Korean female college students' health beliefs and knowledge of PCOS are associated with their preventive behavior intentions. Methods: Data for this cross-sectional study were collected using an online survey of 328 female university students from July 25 to August 30, 2020. Data were analyzed using the chi-squared test and t-test, Pearson's r, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results: The average age of participants was 21.67 years, 7.3% of whom had been diagnosed with PCOS. Perceived disability (ß = 0.30, P < 0.001) and perceived benefit (ß = 0.26, P < 0.001) of health behavior were associated with preventive behavior intentions. However, knowledge was not a significant factor. Conclusions: Health beliefs are related to the preventive behavior intentions of women with PCOS. Education to strengthen health beliefs should be provided to female university students.

Approximately half of the population worldwide suffers from under/undiagnosed diabetes. In South Korea, 27.7% of people aged over 30 years have type 2 diabetes and are unaware of their condition because they have not been diagnosed. Optimal tools for identifying risk factors of undiagnosed diabetes, which is associated with multiple complications, are currently lacking. Secondary data analysis was conducted using the 2010-2016 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This study aimed to identify the risk factors in individuals not diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, using glycated hemoglobin as the diagnostic standard. Furthermore, we aimed to develop an accurate screening tool for diabetes using HbA1c values by analyzing the data of 12,843 adults (aged ≥20 years) not diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Age, gender, family history of diabetes, hypertension diagnosis, waist-to-height ratio, smoking, and health check-ups were identified as significant risk factors for undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. A screening tool with total and cutoff scores of 13 and 7 points was developed, and it had a sensitivity of 82.7% and specificity of 58.2%. The developed screening tool appears to be a simple and cost-effective method for detecting undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.

We included 11 298 subjects aged 30 years or older without diagnosis of diabetes by doctors who had undergone A1C screening. The diagnostic criterion for diabetes was A1C ≥6.5% (48 µmol/mol). This cross-sectional study was performed by reflecting weight of the sample in Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to represent South Korea. Risk factors were age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.04-1.08), Medicaid beneficiary (OR = 2.77, 95% CI = 1.25-6.14), presence of family history of diabetes (OR = 1.97, 95% CI = 1.36-2.84), serum triglyceride level (OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.01-1.03), serum high-density lipoprotein level (OR = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.95-0.98), currently smoking (OR = 1.85, 95% CI = 1.20-2.85), and the presence of regular checkup (OR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.01-2.00). To prevent diabetes with a healthy life, it is necessary to establish a diabetes prevention program for vulnerable people and implement health-related policies such as smoking cessation and regular checkups.

Hypertension (HTN) and type 2 diabetes are common diseases; however, the effects of health behavior and body mass index (BMI) on their incidence and relationship are unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations among health behaviors, BMI, HTN, and type 2 diabetes.This study was a secondary data analysis using Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging data between 2010 and 2014 (third and fifth). The sample consisted of 3481 people aged 45 years or older. Path analysis was conducted using the generalized structural equation modeling of STATA 13.1 that enabled analyzing the types of binary variables and logit links.There were 129 underweight, 1714 normal, and 1638 overweight and obese individuals. In underweight and normal groups who had regular meals (B = 0.670, P < .001), BMI was higher. However, for those who were older (B = -0.041, P < .001) and female (B = -0.229, P = .021), BMI was lower. The incidence of HTN increased with age (B = 0.038, P = .001). In addition, the incidence of type 2 diabetes increased with age (B = 0.051, P = .005) and smoking (B = 1.539, P = .001). However, the incidence of type 2 diabetes was lower (B = -1.077, P = .036) for those who had regular meals. In the normal and overweight groups, BMI decreased with age (B = -0.033, P < .001). The incidence of HTN increased with age (B = 0.042, P < .001) and BMI (B = 0.145, P < .001). Moreover, the incidence of type 2 diabetes increased with age (B = 0.046, P < .001), smoking (B = 0.682, P = .020), and higher BMI (B = 0.151, P = .001).In the underweight and normal group, health behaviors were related to BMI. In the normal and overweight group, health behaviors were not related to BMI, but high BMI was related to the incidence of HTN and type 2 diabetes. Smoking has a direct effect on the incidence of type 2 diabetes. Thus, the importance of maintaining an ideal BMI and smoking cessation are highlighted.

Trichomonas vaginalis is a protozoan parasite that causes acute tissue inflammation in vaginal trichomoniasis. In this study, we investigated the signaling mechanisms through which T. vaginalis-derived secretory products (TvSP) induce chemokine IL-8 production in human mast cells. Stimulation with TvSP induced up-regulation of IL-8 protein secretion in HMC-1 cells. In addition, TvSP induced phosphorylation of transcription factors NF-κB and CREB in HMC-1 cells. Pretreatment of TvSP with lipase, but not heat or proteinase K strongly abolished the stimulatory effect on IL-8 production. Moreover, TvSP-induced IL-8 production and phosphorylation of NF-κB or CREB were inhibited when HMC-1 cells were stimulated with modified TvSP collected from 5-lipooxygenase inhibitor-treated trichomonads. Indeed, T. vaginalis-secreted lipid mediator LTB(4) (700pg/ml) from 1×10(7) trichomonads. Furthermore, pretreatment of HMC-1 cells with antagonists for LTB(4) receptors BLT1 or BLT2 abolished the stimulatory effects of TvSP. Finally, TvSP-induced IL-8 production was inhibited by pretreatment with IκB or CREB inhibitors. These results suggest that T. vaginalis-derived secretory lipid mediator LTB(4) induces IL-8 production in mast cells via BLT-dependent activation of NF-κB and CREB.

Entamoeba histolytica, which causes amebic colitis and occasional liver abscesses in humans, can induce host cell death through apoptosis and necrosis. Recently, we have demonstrated that E. histolytica can induce cell death in neutrophils via diphenyleneiodonium-sensitive NADPH oxidase (NOX)-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although there are enzyme systems similar to the phagocyte NADPH oxidase system in many non-phagocytic cell types, the signaling role of NOX-derived ROS in cell death of human colon epithelial cells induced by E. histolytica remains obscure. Incubation of colon epithelial Caco2 tumor cell lines with amebic trophozoites resulted in intracellular ROS generation and cell death in a caspase-independent manner. Pretreatment with DPI, an inhibitor of NOX, strongly decreased E. histolytica-induced cell death in Caco2 cells. As identified by RT-PCR, NOX1 transcripts were highly expressed in Caco2 cells. siRNA-mediated suppression of NOX1 protein significantly inhibited E. histolytica-induced cell death and ROS response in Caco2 cells. These results suggest that NOX1 participates in the ROS-dependent cell death of colon epithelial cells induced by amebic adhesion during the early phase of intestinal amebiasis.
