Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between surgical zygomatic arch fracture reduction and mandibular movements in different fracture types. Materials and Methods: Fractures were classified according to the Yamamoto classification. The extent of zygomatic arch reduction after surgery was evaluated by measuring three reference points on both fractured and normal side both before and after surgery. The selected reference points were: the most anterior (A1), the most posterior (B1) and the midpoint (C1) relative to midsagittal plane on the fracture side and the same points on the normal side (a1, b1, c1). Mouth opening, movements to right and left were recorded in these patients. Results: The highest extent of zygomatic arch reduction was observed at the midpoint of the arch (p = 0.041). Surgery did not significantly alter other points of the zygomatic arch. The extent of reduction of the zygomatic arch was not significantly associated with mandibular movements. However, type of fracture correlated with lateral excursion to the right and left (p = 0.002 and p = 0.031, respectively). Conclusion: This study showed that the amount of post-surgical changes in zygomatic arch reduction was not significantly related to mandibular movements. In addition, the amount of lateral excursion two weeks after surgical correction of more severe types of zygomatic arch fractures was less compared with other fracture types. Patients with more severe fractures may need to be followed for a longer period of time in order to regain the normal mandibular movement range.

Background: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) or contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) refers to an acute kidney injury (AKI) occurring after exposure to contrast media, commonly used in diagnostic procedures or therapeutic angiographic interventions. Recently, Na/K citrate, used for urine alkalinization, has been assessed for preventing CIN. This experiment evaluated Na/K citrate's efficacy in preventing CIN in high-risk patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. Methods: A prospective randomized clinical trial involved 400 patients with moderate- to high-risk factors for CIN undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). They were randomly assigned to either the control or Na/K citrate groups. The Na/K citrate group (n = 200) received a 5 g Na/K citrate solution diluted in 200 mL water 2 hours before and 4 hours after the first administration, along with intravenous hydration for 2 hours before and 6 hours after the procedure. In contrast, the control group (n = 200) received only intravenous hydration. Serum creatinine (SCr) levels were measured before contrast exposure and 48 hours afterward. CIN was defined as a 25% increase in serum creatinine (SCr) or > 0.5 mg/dL 48 hours after contrast administration. The significance level was set at P ˂ 0.05. Results: CIN was observed in 33 patients (16.5%) in the control group and 6 patients (3%) in the Na/K citrate group. The incidence of CIN was found to have a significant difference between the 2 groups 48 hours after receiving the radiocontrast agent (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our results show that Na/K citrate is helpful and substantially reduces the incidence of CIN.

This study focuses on the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) activity comparison between two forms of NiFe (hydr)oxides: compound 1, where Fe ions are applied on the surface of nickel (hydr)oxide, and compound 2, with Fe ions incorporated into the structural matrix of nickel (hydr)oxide. The observed exponential link between Coulombic energy and the total charge of the system points to a direct proportionality between the potential and the concentration of oxidized nickel ions (e.g., V ∝ [oxidized Ni]), diverging from the logarithmic relationship outlined in the Nernst equation or its modifications, which is not evident in this case. Initial visible spectroscopy indicates a notable trend toward oxidation. As, during the oxidation, more Ni is oxidized, a repulsion effect develops, diminishing the likelihood of further oxidation, and a distinct linear correlation emerges between the quantity of oxidized Ni(II) and the applied potentials.

Estrogens have proven to be effective in bovine estrus induction protocols. Considering the extensive use of these products in large-scale estrus synchronization, the primary objective of the present study was to assess their effects on pregnancy rate (PR) using a meta-analysis approach. A total of 797 papers were screened from three major databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus). Sixty-one studies were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The pregnancy status (success or failure) at 30 days post-insemination was considered as the effect size data. The odds ratios (OR) of PR were evaluated by considering the effects of estrogens in groups with or without estrogen intervention. The impact of estrogen (including factors such as type, dose, and time of administration) and animal characteristics (such as breed, type, and parity) was taken into account when assessing the effectiveness of estrogen response as PR. The results showed an OR of 1.25 (95% CI: 1.15-1.36; P = 0.000) for PR in animals that received estrogen compared to cattle that did not receive estrogen. Estradiol benzoate (OR = 1.3) and estradiol cypionate (OR = 1.2), with doses ranging from 1 to 3 mg (OR = 1.13-1.7), significantly increased the OR of PR. In terms of PR, beef cattle exhibited a higher odds ratio (OR = 1.4; P = 0.000) compared to dairy cattle (OR = 1.1; P = 0.09). The administration of estrogens in the estrus synchronization protocol significantly improved PR in both artificial insemination (OR = 1.2; P = 0.000) and embryo transfer (OR = 1.3; P = 0.033) programs. In summary, incorporating estrogens into estrus induction protocols led to an enhancement of the OR of PR among cattle.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized the treatment of different malignancies. However, their efficacy in advanced adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) remains uncertain. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the efficacy and tolerability of ICIs in patients with advanced ACC. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and CENTRAL for studies that used ICIs in ACC. Studies with more than five patients were included in the meta-analysis of the objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and grade 3/4 adverse events. Twenty studies with 23 treatment arms and 250 patients were included. Single-agent anti-PD1 or anti-PD-L1 treatment was utilized in 13 treatment arms, whereas an anti-PD1 or anti-PD-L1 and anti-CTLA4 combination was used in 4 treatment arms. Other anti-PD1- or anti-PD-L1-based combinations were used in five treatment arms. The ORR was 14% (95% CI = 10-19%, I2 = 0%), and the DCR was 43% (95% CI = 37-50%, I2 = 13%). The combination anti-PD1- or anti-PD-L1-based treatment strategies did not correlate with higher responses compared with monotherapy. The median OS was 13.9 months (95% CI = 7.85-23.05), and the median PFS was 2.8 months (95% CI = 1.8-5.4). ICIs have a modest efficacy in advanced ACC but a good OS. Further studies are needed to investigate predictive biomarkers for ICI response and to compare ICI-based strategies with the current standard of care.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is deadly anaplastic changes in the gastrointestinal tract with high-rate mortality. In recent years, the application of phytocompounds has been extended along with different therapeutic protocols. Here, we monitored the effects of Thymoquinone (TQ) on autophagy via mitochondrial function after modulation of the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway.Human colorectal adenocarcinoma HT-29 cells were treated with TQ (60 µM) and 15 µM Wnt3a inhibitor (LGK974) for 48 h. The survival rate was evaluated using an MTT assay. The expression of Wnt-related factors (c-Myc, and Axin), angiogenesis (VE-Cadherin), and mitophagy-related factors (PINK1, OPTN) was assessed using real-time PCR assay. Protein levels of autophagy factors (Beclin-1, LC3, and P62) were monitored using western blotting. Using flow cytometry analysis, the intracellular accumulation of Rhodamine 123 was evaluated. The migration properties were analyzed using a scratch wound healing assay.Data indicated that TQ can reduce the viability of HT-29 cells compared to the control cells (p < 0.05). The expression of VE-Cadherin was inhibited while the expression of PINK1 was induced in treated cells (p < 0.05). Both LGK974 and TQ-treated cells exhibited activation of autophagy flux (Beclin-1↑, LC3II/I↑, and p62↓) compared to the control group (p < 0.05). TQ can increase intracellular accumulation of Rhodamine 123, indicating the inhibition of efflux mechanisms in cancer cells. Along with these changes, the migration of cells was also reduced (p < 0.05).TQ is a potential phytocompound to alter the dynamic growth of human colorectal HT-29 cells via the modulation of autophagy, and mitophagy-related mechanisms.

The Mandible can be damaged by pathological factors, tumors, trauma, infection, and needs a surgical operation for reconstruction and restoring function. There are different methods for the reconstruction of mandible. Based on the surgical approach, primary reconstruction of mandible by reconstruction plate after resection is necessary for maintaining mandibular symmetric and esthetic of the lower third of the face. A finite element model of mandible and masticatory muscles was produced from a normal person (male with 35-year-old). The normal model was resected from the left sixth tooth to the second tooth. The pathological model was reconstructed in different conditions by macro plate. Different conditions were analyzed and compared based on bite force on right fifth tooth, stress developed on screws and macro plate. The finite element analysis results showed that maximum bite force and lower stress on screws were seen in the pathological model (condition 5) when one macro plate and six screws were inserted in the mid-body. The findings showed that the use of two macro plates causes lower stress on it than when we use one. Use of one macro plate and six screws is the best choice in mandibular immobilization which decrease the stress applied on bone and increase the bite force. Because of less stress developed on macro plates and screws, use of two macro plates or one macro plate in mid-body area are also preferred.

Developing a clinical AI model necessitates a significant amount of highly curated and carefully annotated dataset by multiple medical experts, which results in increased development time and costs. Self-supervised learning (SSL) is a method that enables AI models to leverage unlabelled data to acquire domain-specific background knowledge that can enhance their performance on various downstream tasks. In this work, we introduce CypherViT, a cluster-based histo-pathology phenotype representation learning by self-supervised multi-class-token hierarchical Vision Transformer (ViT). CypherViT is a novel backbone that can be integrated into a SSL pipeline, accommodating both coarse and fine-grained feature learning for histopathological images via a hierarchical feature agglomerative attention module with multiple classification (cls) tokens in ViT. Our qualitative analysis showcases that our approach successfully learns semantically meaningful regions of interest that align with morphological phenotypes. To validate the model, we utilize the DINO self-supervised learning (SSL) framework to train CypherViT on a substantial dataset of unlabeled breast cancer histopathological images. This trained model proves to be a generalizable and robust feature extractor for colorectal cancer images. Notably, our model demonstrates promising performance in patch-level tissue phenotyping tasks across four public datasets. The results from our quantitative experiments highlight significant advantages over existing state-of-the-art SSL models and traditional transfer learning methods, such as those relying on ImageNet pre-training.

PURPOSE: Pyrus boissieriana is a rich source of arbutin and has been used in herbal medicine to treat infectious diseases. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the arbutin-rich fraction of Pyrus boissieriana aerial parts on Toxoplasma gondii In Vitro and In Vivo. METHODS: An arbutin-rich fraction of P. boissieriana was prepared beforehand. Flow cytometry was used to evaluate the effect of different concentrations (1-512 µg/ml) of the P. boissieriana arbutin-rich fraction on Toxoplasma tachyzoites (RH strain). The cytotoxicity of the concentrations on the macrophage J774 cell line was also investigated by MTT assay. For In Vivo investigation, 4-6-week-old female mice infected with the RH strain of T. gondii were treated with different doses (16, 32, 64, 256, and 512 mg/kg) of the fraction using gavage. RESULTS: The highest and lowest lethality of the tachyzoites were 89.6% and 25.9% related to the concentrations of 512 µg/ml and 1 µg/ml, respectively, with an IC50 value of 18.1 µg/ml ± 0.37. The cytotoxicity test showed an IC50 value of 984.3 µg/ml ± 0.76 after 48 h incubation. The mean survival of mice at the lowest treated dose (16 mg/kg) was 6.6 days, and it was 15 days at the highest dose (512 mg/kg). The concentrations of 512, 256, 128, and 64 mg/kg of the fraction compared to the negative control (6.2 days mean survival) significantly increased the survival time of mice (P < 0.001, P = 0.009, P = 0.018, and P = 0.021, respectively). CONCLUSION: The results showed that the arbutin-rich fraction of P. boissieriana is effective against T. gondii In Vitro and In Vivo and may be a reliable alternative to conventional treatment for toxoplasmosis, although further studies are necessary.

Quercetin, a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound found in abundance in vegetables and fruits, has emerged as a compelling subject of study in cancer treatment. This comprehensive review delves into the significance and originality of quercetin's multifaceted mechanisms of action, with a particular focus on its application in various brain tumors such as glioblastoma, glioma, neuroblastoma, astrocytoma, and medulloblastoma. This review scrutinizes the distinctive facets of quercetin's anti-cancer properties, highlighting its capacity to modulate intricate signaling pathways, trigger apoptosis, impede cell migration, and enhance radiosensitivity in brain tumor cells. Significantly, it synthesizes recent research findings, providing insights into potential structure-activity relationships that hold promise for developing novel quercetin derivatives with heightened effectiveness. By unraveling the unique attributes of quercetin's anti-brain tumor effects and exploring its untapped potential in combination therapies, this review contributes to a deeper comprehension of quercetin's role as a prospective candidate for advancing innovative treatments for brain cancer.

RESUMO

COVID-19 emerged in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, spread worldwide rapidly, and caused millions of deaths in a short time. Many preclinical and clinical studies were performed to discover the most efficient therapy to reduce the mortality of COVID-19 patients. Among various approaches for preventing and treating COVID-19, mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy can be regarded as a novel and efficient treatment for managing COVID-19 patients. In this review, we explain the pathogenesis of COVID-19 infection in humans and discuss the role of MSCs in suppressing the inflammation and cytokine storm produced by COVID-19. Then, we reviewed the clinical trial and systematic review studies that investigated the safety and efficacy of MSC therapy in the treatment of COVID-19 infection.

Carcinoma of the lung is among the most common types of cancer globally. Concerning its histology, it is categorized as a non-small cell carcinoma (NSCLC) and a small cell cancer (SCLC) subtype. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a member of non-coding RNA whose nucleotides range from 19 to 25. They are known to be critical regulators of cancer via epigenetic control of oncogenes expression and by regulating tumor suppressor genes. miRNAs have an essential function in a tumorous microenvironment via modulating cancer cell growth, metastasis, angiogenesis, metabolism, and apoptosis. Moreover, a wide range of information produced via several investigations indicates their tumor-suppressing, oncogenic, diagnostic assessment, and predictive marker functions in different types of lung malignancy. miRNA mimics or anti-miRNAs can be transferred into a lung cancer cell, with possible curative implications. As a result, miRNAs hold promise as targets for lung cancer treatment and detection. In this study, we investigate the different functions of various miRNAs in different types of lung malignancy, which have been achieved in recent years that show the lung cancer-associated regulation of miRNAs expression, concerning their function in lung cancer beginning, development, and resistance to chemotherapy, also the probability to utilize miRNAs as predictive biomarkers for therapy reaction.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and its predictors among hospitalized chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. METHODS: An observational retrospective study was conducted. All patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COPD according to the GOLD guidelines between 28 and 2020 and 1 March 2023 at Al-Noor Specialist Hospital were included in this study. Patients were excluded if a preemptive diagnosis of COPD was made clinically without spirometry evidence of fixed airflow limitation. Descriptive results were presented as frequency (percentage) for categorical variables and mean (SD) for continuous variables and to estimate prevalence of ICU admission. Predictors of ICU admission among hospitalized COPD patients were determined using logistic regression analysis. A SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 25 was used to perform all statistical analysis. RESULTS: A total of 705 patients with COPD were included in this study. The mean age was 65.4 (25.3) years. Around 12.4% of the hospitalized patients were admitted to the ICD. Logistic regression analysis identified that older age (OR; 1.92, (1.41-2.62)), smoking (OR; 1.60 (1.17-2.19)), and having specific comorbidities (Hypertension (OR; 1.98 (1.45-2.71)), Diabetes mellitus (OR; 1.42 (1.04-1.93)), GERD (OR; 2.81 (1.99-3.96)), Ischemic heart disease (OR; 3.22 (2.19-4.75)), Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OR; 2.14 (1.38-3.33)), stroke (OR; 4.51 (2.20-9.26))) were predictors of ICU admissions among patients with COPD. CONCLUSIONS: Our study found that a step-up approach to inpatient COPD management requires admission to the ICU in 12.4%, for which age, smoking status, cardiovascular, and stroke were important predictors. Further clinical research is needed to provide a validated model that can be incorporated into clinical practice to monitor this patient population during their admission and identify at-risk individuals for early transfer to higher acuity settings and intensive care units.

The latest advancements in oncology involves the creation of multifunctional nanostructures. The integration of nanoparticles into the realm of cancer therapy has brought about a transformative shift, revolutionizing the approach to addressing existing challenges and limitations in tumor elimination. This is particularly crucial in combating the emergence of resistance, which has significantly undermined the effectiveness of treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. GO stands as a carbon-derived nanoparticle that is increasingly finding utility across diverse domains, notably in the realm of biomedicine. The utilization of GO nanostructures holds promise in the arena of oncology, enabling precise transportation of drugs and genetic material to targeted sites. GO nanomaterials offer the opportunity to enhance the pharmacokinetic behavior and bioavailability of drugs, with documented instances of these nanocarriers elevating drug accumulation at the tumor location. The GO nanostructures encapsulate genes, shielding them from degradation and facilitating their uptake within cancer cells, thereby promoting efficient gene silencing. The capability of GO to facilitate phototherapy has led to notable advancements in reducing tumor progression. By PDT and PTT combination, GO nanomaterials hold the capacity to diminish tumorigenesis. GO nanomaterials have the potential to trigger both cellular and innate immunity, making them promising contenders for vaccine development. Additionally, types of GO nanoparticles that respond to specific stimuli have been applied in cancer eradication, as well as for the purpose of cancer detection and biomarker diagnosis. Endocytosis serves as the mechanism through which GO nanomaterials are internalized. Given these advantages, the utilization of GO nanomaterials for tumor elimination comes highly recommended.

Introduction: in patients with advanced primary or recurrent gynecologic, urologic, or rectal cancers without metastatic disease, extensive aggressive surgery such as pelvic exenteration may be necessary for curative intent treatment. This study aims to present the initial experience and clinical outcome of curative pelvic exenteration procedures for advanced or recurrent pelvic cancer in our center. Methods: a retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at the colorectal unit at King Hussein Medical Center in Amman, Jordan, between March 2014 and December 2021. All patients who underwent pelvic exenteration procedures were included in this study. Demographic characteristics, type of procedure, completeness of excision, postoperative complications, morbidity, and mortality were analyzed. Results: a total of 30 patients underwent thirty-one operations. There were 22 females and eight males with a median age of 55 (range 25-86) years. Twenty-six surgeries were for advanced primary and 5 for recurrent malignancies. Twenty-nine operations were performed for colorectal and 2 for gynecological tumors. There were 19 posterior pelvic exenterations, 2 posterior pelvic exenterations with sacrectomy, and ten total pelvic exenterations. Completeness of tumor excision R0 was observed in 21 specimens, incomplete (R1/R2) in 6 specimens. The overall complication rate was 67.7% and 30-day mortality was 16.7%. Ten (33.3%) patients are disease free at a median follow-up of 22 months. Conclusion: in our study, pelvic exenteration provides above 40% overall survival at a median follow-up of two years. Gaining experience in this type of procedure, a multidisciplinary approach, careful patients' selection, and preoperative counseling will reduce postoperative morbidity and mortality.

Considerable evidence points to a dominant role of inflammation in tumor pathology. The biological response of the immune system can be triggered by Toxoplasma gondii as a common brain-tropic parasite. The aim of this study was to investigate an association between Toxoplasma infection and brain tumors. This case-control study was performed on sera of brain tumor patients (n = 124) and age- and sex-matched control subjects (n = 124) in Southern Iran. Data related to tumor site and type were collected during sample collection. Anti-Toxoplasma IgG was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Seroprevalence anti-Toxoplasma IgG was significantly higher in brain tumor patients 30.6% (38/124) compared with 12.1% (15/124) of the healthy controls (OR 3.211; 95% CI 1.658 to 6.219; p = 0.001). The highest seroprevalence was detected in patients with ependymoma (100%), followed by glioblastoma (83%), pituitary adenoma (47.3%), astrocytoma (27.2%), schwannoma (23%), and meningioma (22.6%). The parasite infection was correlated to brain tumor's location i.e., the patients with frontal lobe and sella region tumors had higher seropositivity compared with others (P < 0.05). The higher prevalence of Toxoplasma infection among patients with brain tumor compared with the control group indicates a probable association between the infection and brain tumors.

Background: With the emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and inability of healthcare systems to control the disease, various therapeutic theories with controversial responses have been proposed. Plasmapheresis was administered as a medication. However, the knowledge of its efficacy and indications is inadequate. This study evaluated the use of plasmapheresis in critically ill patients with cancer. Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 86 patients with malignancies, including a control group (N=41) and an intervention group (N=45) with severe COVID-19 during 2020-21. Both groups were treated with routine medications for COVID-19 management according to national guidelines, and plasmapheresis was applied to the intervention group. C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, ferritin, lactate dehydrogenase, hemoglobin, and white blood cell, polymorphonuclear, lymphocyte, and platelet levels were measured at admission and at the end of plasmapheresis. Other variables included neutrophil recovery, intensive care unit admission, intubation requirements, length of hospital stay, and hospitalization outcomes. Results: CRP(P<0.001), D-dimer (P<0.001), ferritin (P=0.039), and hemoglobin (P=0.006) levels were significantly different between the groups after the intervention. Neutrophil recovery was remarkably higher in the case than in the control group (P<0.001). However, plasmapheresis did not affect the length of hospital stay (P=0.076), which could have significantly increased survival rates (P<0.001). Conclusion: Based on the study findings, plasmapheresis led to a significant improvement in laboratory markers and survival rate in patients with severe COVID-19. These findings reinforce the value of plasmapheresis in cancer patients as a critical population suffering from neutropenia and insufficient immune responses.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to assess in vitro protoscolicidal effects of curcumin nanoemulsion (CUR-NE) against protoscoleces of cystic echinococcosis (CE)/hydatid cysts. METHODS: The CUR-NE was prepared via spontaneous emulsification of soybean as the oil phase, a mixture of Tween 80 and Tween 85 as the surfactant, ethanol as the co-surfactant and distilled water. Various concentrations of CUR-NE (156, 312, 625 and 1250 µg/ml) were exposed to collected protoscoleces of infected sheep liver hydatid cysts for 10, 20, 30, 60 and 120 min. Viability of the protoscoleces were assessed using eosin exclusion test. Morphological changes of the protoscoleces were observed using differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy. RESULTS: The mean particle size and zeta potential of CUR-NE included 60.4 ± 14.8 nm and - 16.1 ± 1.1 mV, respectively. Results showed that the viability of the protoscoleces decreased significantly with increases in CUR-NE concentrations (p < 0.001). The mortality rates of protoscoleces with exposure to concentrations of 1250 and 625 µg/ml of CUR-NE for 60 min were 94 and 73.33%, respectively. Mortality of the protoscoleces was 100% after 120 min of exposure to 1250 and 625 µg/ml concentrations of CUR-NE. Using NIC microscopy, extensively altered tegumental surface protoscoleces was observed after protoscoleces exposure to CUR-NE. CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study revealed the in vitro protoscolicidal potential of CUR-NE. Therefore, CUR-NEs are addressed as novel protoscolicidal agents, which can be used as an alternative natural medicine to kill the protoscoleces, owing to their low toxicity and significant inhibition potency. However, further studies are necessary to investigate pharmacologic and pharmacokinetics of CUR-NEs.

BACKGROUND: Trichomoniasis is a parasitic infection of the urinary and genital tract, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. This study aimed to investigate the molecular diagnosis of T. vaginalis infection in liquid-based Papanicolaou samples in Shiraz, southern Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 534 liquid-based Papanicolaou samples were collected from women referring to the laboratory of Motahari Clinic of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in 2021. Genomic DNA were extracted from the samples and examined for evidence of T. vaginalis using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using TVK3 and TVK7 specific primers. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 39.28 ± 9.89 with a maximum age of 65 and a minimum age of 19 years. T. vaginalis DNA fragments were detected in 4.86% (26/534) of the cases. There was significantly higher prevalence in the age groups of 21 to 30 and 41 to 50 years (46.15%, p = 0.001 and 38.46%, p = 0.015, respectively). Furthermore, the results showed an association between a history of foamy discharge and Trichomonas positivity (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: T. vaginalis infection is common in liquid-based Papanicolaou samples of women who attended regular health check-ups in the study area. Screening for trichomoniasis in populations, particularly if using highly sensitive methods such as PCR, may lead to increased detection and treatment.

From 17,000 new cases of esophageal cancer worldwide during last year, 16,000 proved to be fatal. Late or incorrect diagnosis of esophageal cancer cases increases its fatality rate. Today, a data-mining technique can predict the course of the disease with the help of an upto-date technology. With this knowledge, we can reduce esophageal cancer mortality. This study aims to find an association between general characteristics, screening tests, and esophageal cancer based on raw data from the Cancer Research Center within-person interviews, using data mining and classification techniques on mortality. The 5-year medical records of 512 esophageal cancer patients and those with problems related to this cancer, with 50 functional characteristics, were included in this model. In order to provide a prognostic and rule discovery model for esophageal cancer suffering, we used preprocessing EM Algorithm. After accurate identification of the data, WEKA Software tools and Java programming language was used to create Association Rule Classifier and Apriori algorithm for the associated rule discovery. We created 6 significant rules of the association for classification generated by rule miner with 95% and 91% confidence based on screening tests and general attributes, respectively. These substantial rules showed significant association between age, history of medication, smoking, gender, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), creatinine, WBCs, and Platelets. The findings of this study can be used as a clue for physicians to consider patients with these characteristics as people who are more likely to develop esophageal cancer and help them for early diagnosis of patients.
