Clinical decision-making and biomedical research heavily rely on imaging techniques to visualize tissue morphology. To examine tissues in detail, it is necessary to use special histochemical stains to enhance contrast. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the sensitivity and specificity of these stains in diagnosing oral pathologic specimens. We conducted a search in 8 databases, including EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, Ovid, Cinahl, and Cochrane, up to June 2022. Of 87,393 studies, 41 articles were selected for inclusion in our study. The results revealed that the specificity and sensitivity of the special histochemical stains were 86% with confidence interval (CI) 95%: 80%-90% and 83% with CI 95%: 75%-89%, respectively. Among the stains evaluated, toluidine blue, Papanicolaou, silver stain, Giemsa, Gram, feulgen, and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) were the most frequently used for the detection of malignancy, premalignant lesions, dysplasia, and candidiasis. The specificity and sensitivity of each stain were analyzed individually, considering the type of specimen. Toluidine blue was the most commonly utilized special histochemical stain, particularly effective, for detecting malignancy, with a specificity of 97% with CI 95%: 88%-99% and sensitivity of 76% with CI 95%: 56%-89%. In conclusion, special histochemical stains are effective in diagnosing oral lesions, exhibiting reasonable specificity and sensitivity, especially in cases of premalignant and malignant lesions. Based on the reviewed articles in our study, the silver stain was identified as highly sensitive, while Giemsa and Papanicolaou stain exhibited the highest specificity.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common metabolic disorder among women of reproductive age. Many factors are involved in the development of PCOS, among which genetic predisposition is probably the main contributor that is also influenced by lifestyle and environmental factors. This study aims to determine the prevalence of PCOS in different continents based on Rotterdam, AES and NIH diagnostic criteria. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome in women according to (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases were comprehensively searched until February 2021 for relevant articles. Heterogeneity between the studies was assessed using the I2 index. Begg and Mazumdar's test was used to evaluate publication bias. RESULTS: A total of 35 studies with 12,365,646 subjects were retrieved. The mean age ranged from 10-45 years. Global prevalence of PCOS was 9.2% (95% CI: 6.8-12.5%) based on meta-analysis, our results showed that the global prevalence of PCOS was 5.5% (95% CI: 3.9-7.7%) based on NIH criteria, 11.5 (95% CI: 6.6-19.4) based on Rotterdam criteria, and 7.1% (95% CI: 2.3-20.2%) based on AES criteria. According to self-report subgroup analysis, the prevalence of PCOS was found to be 11% (95% CI: 5.2-21.8%). CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the present study, the prevalence of PCOS in the world was 9.2% (95% CI: 6.8-12.5%). According to the results of the present study and the high prevalence of PCOS, especially in the Africa continent, it is necessary for health systems to implement measures to timely prevent and treat this syndrome.

Objectives: Smoking, especially cigarettes, is known as one of the most common social and health problems among people. E-cigarettes are another form of tobacco that has been an ordinary daily occurrence.Study Design: systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Systematic searching of databases was performed in Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, Science Direct, MagIran, IranDoc, SID and Google search engine based on the PRISMA 2020 guideline. This search was conducted by the end of May 2021. Following full-text assessments, the related data were extracted from the papers. Newcastle-Ottawa scale was also used to evaluate the quality of methodology of the articles. Finally, study analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 2) based on the random effect model. Results: Global prevalence of E-cigarette in younger individuals was 16.8 (95 % CI: 10.6-25.6) and 4.8 (95 % CI: 3-7.6) in the Ever and Current modes of E-cigarette, respectively. We also found that E-cigarettes were used more common in young boys than young girls in both Ever and Current modes. In young boys, the prevalence of E-cigarette were 18.8 (95 % CI: 8.4-36.8) and 4.9 (95 % CI: 3-8) in both modes of Ever and Current, respectively. In young girls, these factors were 9.9 (95 % CI: 5-18.6) and 1.6 (95 % CI: 1-3.1) in both modes of Ever and Current, respectively. Conclusions: The global prevalence of e-cigarettes among young people, especially young boys, is increasing. Based on this, the prevention and management of the damage of this social phenomenon requires comprehensive global study, planning and policy.

Neurological diseases, including ischemic stroke, are considered a big challenge for public health due to their high prevalence and lack of definitive and effective treatments. Addressing these issues requires innovative therapeutic approaches and among the limited methods available, stem cells have shown promise in improving central nervous system repair by enhancing myelin regeneration and neuronal recovery. To advance this field of research, this systematic review aims to assess the safety and effectiveness of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from both bone marrow and adipose tissue for the treatment of ischemic stroke. This study conducted a systematic review in the electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar to assess the efficacy and safety of MSCs generated from bone marrow and adipose tissue for the treatment of ischemic stroke. It was extracted without a time limit until April 2023. The studies were then transferred to the information management program (EndNote) and duplicates were eliminated. The remaining studies were then examined using the entry and exit criteria and the 3 stages of primary, secondary, and qualitative evaluation, and finally, the results of the final studies were extracted. According to the initial search in the desired databases, 1028 possible related articles were identified and transferred to the information management software (EndNote). After removing 390 duplicate studies, 608 studies were excluded based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Finally, 37 final studies were included in the systematic review process. Based on the investigations, it was evident that the administration of MSCs derived from both bone marrow and adipose tissue holds significant promise as an effective and safe treatment approach for ischemic stroke. The results consistently showed acceptable outcomes in the studies and this evidence can be recommended for the clinical application of this treatment. Also, the findings of this study report that the use of adipose tissue and bone marrow MSCs in the treatment of ischemic stroke can be used as a practical method.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common malignancy in women in western countries. A significant part of malignant cases is caused by genetic mutation. Mutations in the gene phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome (PTEN) have been proven in various malignancies. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the prevalence of BC due to PTEN gene mutation, as well as estimating the chance of developing BC due to the occurrence of PTEN gene mutation. The present study was conducted using a systematic review method based on PRISMA 2020 statements. The search was done in PubMed, Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, and direct scientific databases. The search was performed using the keywords breast cancer, breast malignancy, PTEN, polymorphism, mutation, variant, and their equivalents. Statistical analysis was performed using the second version of Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Software. A total of 2138 articles were collected. After removing duplicate articles, checking the title and abstract, and then checking the full text of the documents, finally 64 articles were approved and entered the systematic review process. Analysis of these studies with a sample size of 231,179 showed the prevalence of breast cancer patients with PTEN mutations. The combined results of 64 studies showed that the prevalence of PTEN mutations has a 3.3 (95% CI 2.2-5) in BC patients, and an analysis of 6 studies showed that the odds ratio of developing BC due to PTEN mutation is 3.7 (95% CI 1.1-11.9). The results of this study show that mutation in the PTEN gene increases the chance of developing BC. However, it was found that a small part of patients gets BC due to the occurrence of mutation in this gene.

IL-6 gene polymorphisms can play a role in the development or control of cancer by affecting cytokines. Gastrointestinal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of polymorphism of the IL-6 174G > C gene on gastrointestinal cancers based on a systematic review and meta-analysis, including gastric, colorectal, and esophageal cancer. In this study, a systematic and meta-analytical review of the study data on the effect of polymorphism of IL-6 174G > C gene on gastrointestinal cancer (gastric, colorectal, and esophageal cancer) in Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, PubMed, and Science Direct Databases was extracted without any time limit until April 2020. In order to perform the analysis of eligible studies, the model of random effects was used and the heterogeneity of studies was investigated with I2 index. Data analysis was performed with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (Version 2). The total number of surveyed studies in patients with colorectal cancer was 22 studies. Based on the results of meta-analysis, the odds ratio of GG genotype in patients with colorectal cancer was 0.88. The odds ratio of GC genotype obtained in patients with colorectal cancer was 0.88 and the odds ratio of CC genotype in patients with colorectal cancer was 0.92. The total number of surveyed studies in patients with gastric cancer was 12. Based on the meta-analysis results, the odds ratio of GG genotype in patients with gastric cancer was 0.74, the odds ratio of GC genotype in patients with gastric cancer was 1.27, and the odds ratio of CC genotype in patients with gastric cancer was 0.78. The total number of surveyed studies in esophageal cancer patients was 3 studies. Based on the results of meta-analysis, the odds ratio of GG genotype in patients with esophageal cancer was 0.57, the odds ratio of GC genotype in patients with esophageal cancer was 0.44, and the odds ratio of chance of CC genotype in patients with esophageal cancer was 0.99. In general, different genotypes of polymorphism of the IL-6 174G > C gene reduce the risk of gastric, colorectal, and esophageal cancer. However, the GC genotype of this gene was associated with a 27% increased risk of gastric cancer.

Ofatumumab's therapeutic impact on patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has been the subject of increasing clinical research. However, in recent years, no studies have yet provided a pooled assessment of the treatment effect of ofatumumab vs. non-ofatumumab regimens. Therefore, we conducted a progression meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of ofatumumab-based treatment in CLL patients using data from clinical studies. Relevant publications from PubMed, Web of Science and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched. The efficacy outcomes were progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). The articles reviewed in the mentioned databases and matching the specified keywords were searched until January 2023. The pooled efficacy analysis showed that there was a significant difference in PFS [hazard ratios (HR) = 0.62, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.52-0.74] and no significant difference in OS (HR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.71-1.03) between ofatumumab-based therapy and non-ofatumumab therapy. Our analysis showed the pooled efficacy for PFS was statistically significantly improved with ofatumumab-based treatments for CLL compared with other groups. Also, ofatumumab had no statistically significant improvement in the OS of patients with CLL. Thus, ofatumumab-based therapies for CLL patients could be improved by other combinational-based regimens.

Glioma is the most common type of primary brain tumour which accounts for about 30% of all brain and central nervous system tumours, and approximately 70% of adult malignant brain tumours. Numerous studies have been performed to assess the relationship between ERCC2 rs13181 polymorphism and the risk of glioma development, yet these findings of these studies are often inconsistent and contradictory. Therefore, the aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the role of ERCC2 rs13181 in glioma developing. In this work, we have conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. In order to collect the results of relevant studies on the association of ERCC2 rs13181 gene polymorphism with glioma, we initially searched the Scopus, Embase, Web of Science (WoS), PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases, without a lower time limit, and until June 2020. In order to analyse the eligible studies, the random effects model was used and the heterogeneity of the studies was investigated with the I 2 index. Data analysis was performed within the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 2). The total number of studies that focused on patients with glioma was 10. The odds ratio of GG vs TT genotype in patients with glioma based on meta-analysis was 1.08 (0.85-1.37: 95% confidence interval), which indicates the increasing effect of GG vs TT genotype by 0.08. The odds ratio of GG + TG vs TT genotype in patients with glioma was 1.22 (1.38-1.7: 95% confidence interval) based on meta-analysis, which indicates the increasing effect of GG + TG vs TT genotype as 0.22. The odds ratio of TG vs TT genotype in patients with glioma was 1.2 (0.38-1.4: 95% confidence interval), which shows the increasing effect of TG vs TT genotype by 0.2. The odds ratio of G vs T genotype in patients with glioma based on the meta-analysis was 1.15 (1.26-1.4: 95% confidence interval), which indicates the increasing effect of G vs T genotype by 0.15. The odds ratio of GG vs TG + TT genotype in patients with glioma based on meta-analysis was 1.22 (1.33-1.45: 95% confidence interval), which indicates the increasing effect of GG vs TG + TT genotype by 0.22. The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis show that ERCC2 rs13181 polymorphism and its genotypes are an important risk factor for genetic susceptibility to glioma tumour.

BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms, including benign and malignant tumors. Since there are many heterogeneities in the prevalence reported in previous studies on this type of tumor, this study was performed to determine the overall prevalence of different primary CNS tumors. METHOD: The study was conducted as a systematic review and meta-analysis by searching international databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of science, and the Google Scholar search engine until August 2020. After transferring the studies to information management software (EndNote) and eliminating duplicate studies, the remaining studies were reviewed based on inclusion and exclusion criteria according to three stages of primary and secondary evaluation and qualitative evaluation. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software, Begg, Mazumdar, and I2 tests were used for data analysis, publication bias analysis, and heterogeneity analysis, respectively. RESULTS: After performing the systematic review steps, 80 studies were included for final analysis. Based on 8 studies, the prevalence of brain tumors was 70.9%. Also, studies on 7 other studies showed that the prevalence of spinal tumors was 12.2%. A review of 14 studies showed that the prevalence of neuroepithelial tumors was 34.7%. The analysis of 27 studies reported a prevalence of glioma tumors of 42.8%. Analyses performed on other studies showed that the prevalence of pituitary adenomas was 12.2%, embryonal tumors 3.1%, ependymal tumors 3.2%, meningiomas 24.1%, glial tumors 0.8%, astrocytic 20.3%, oligodendroglial 3.9%, glioblastoma 17.7%, schwannoma 6.7%, medulloblastoma 7.7% and Polycystic astrocytomas 3.8%. CONCLUSION: As a result, it can be stated that brain tumors are the most common type of primary CNS tumors. It was also observed that tumors involving neuroepithelial cells are more common in patients than other types of tumors.

AIM: One approach to measure the demographic impacts of death is to examine the number of lost years of life. The present paper aims to estimate the "Years of Lost Life" (YLL) due to the main causes of death in Yazd province of Iran. METHOD: The present study is an epidemiological examination for which the statistical population included all the death incidents in Yazd province (excluding stillbirth cases) over two time periods of 2011 and 2016 with a 5-year distance. The required data were obtained based on the Comprehensive System of Mortality Registration maintained by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education; while the standard life expectancy data were based on the World Health Organization standards using standard life table, level 26 of the West model (Coale and Demeny) for Japanese men and women. The standard YLL was calculated according to the WHO standard using a 0.03 relaxation rate for the future time and weighting coefficient for various ages and life years through the formula using the Microsoft Excel software. RESULTS: The findings of the present study suggest that two main causes of YLL in Yazd province during the year of 2011 were cardiovascular difficulties with the rates of 31.6 per 1000 persons for women and 27.1 per 1000 persons for men, and cancers with the rates of 14.9 per 1000 persons for women and 16.2 per 1000 persons for men. While the above numbers in 2016 were, respectively 22.5 per 1000 persons for women and 25.5 per 1000 persons for men due to cardiovascular difficulties; and 18 per 1000 persons for women and 15.5/1000 for men due to various types of cancers. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that cardiovascular diseases and cancers are the main factors leading to Years of Lost Lifetime for the residents of Yazd province in Iran.

Abstract Background Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) patients face several challenges due to the nature of the disease and its physical and psychological complications. Sleep disorders are among the most important concerns. Sleep disorders can aggravate the signs and symptoms of the disease and ultimately reduce the quality of patients' lives. This study uses a systematic review and meta-analysis to pool the reported prevalence of sleep disorders among AS patients. Methods To find related studies, the WoS, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar databases were systematically searched without a lower time limit. Heterogeneity among the identified studies was checked using the I2 index, and the Begg and Mazumdar correlation test examined the existence of published bias. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (v.2) software was adopted to analyze the data. Results In the review of 18 studies with a sample size of 5,840, the overall pooled prevalence of sleep disorders among AS patients based on the random effects method was found to be 53% (95% CI: 44.9-61). The highest and lowest prevalence was in Egypt at 90% and Australia at 19.2%, respectively. Our meta-regression results show that with the increase in 'sample size' and 'year of publication', the overall prevalence of sleep disorders in patients with AS decreases (p < 0.05). Conclusion The results of the present study indicate a high and significant prevalence of sleep disorders among AS patients. Thus, health policymakers and healthcare providers must focus on timely diagnosis and effective educational and therapeutic interventions for the prevention and proper treatment of sleep disorders in this population of patients.

The increased number of female smokers is considered a global health challenge in recent years. One of the detrimental effects of smoking is sexual hormone fluctuation causing female sexual dysfunction (FSD). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effects of smoking leading to FSD. Electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Science Direct, and Google Scholar) were hired for systematic searching. Until June 2022, whole qualified studies reporting the consequences of smoking on FSD were gathered for data analysis based on the random effects model (CMA software, v.2). Study heterogeneity and publication bias were also assessed using I2 index and Egger test, respectively. Ten eligible studies with a sample size of 15,334 female smokers (18-79 years) were selected. Following data analysis, the odds ratio representing the effects of smoking on FSD was found 1.48 (95%CI: 1.2-1.83), indicating that female smokers were 48% more susceptible to FSD than non-smokers. Also, the publication bias was reported as non-significant (p = 0.178). Since smoking is an increasingly common phenomenon in females and women smokers are 48% more susceptible to the FSD, preparation of necessary health measures by the health policymakers to reduce the number of female smokers and subsequent health services seems necessary.

BACKGROUND: Anencephaly is a fatal congenital anomaly characterized by the absence of brain hemispheres and cranial arch. Timely preventive measures can be taken by knowing the exact prevalence of this common neural tube defect; thus, carried out through systematic review and meta-analysis, the present study was conducted to determine the worldwide prevalence, incidence and mortality of anencephaly. METHODS: Cochran's seven-step instructions were used as the guideline. Having determined the research question and inclusion and exclusion criteria, we studied MagIran, SID, Science Direct, WoS, Web of Science, Medline (PubMed), Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. Moreover, the search strategy in each database included using all possible keyword combinations with the help of "AND" and "OR" operators with no time limit to 2021. The I2 test was used to calculate study heterogeneity, and Begg and Mazumdar rank correlation tests were employed to assess the publication bias. Data were analyzed by Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (Version 2). RESULTS: In this study, the statements of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) were used. In the first stage, 1141 articles were found, of which 330 duplicate studies were omitted. 371 articles were deleted based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria by reviewing the title and abstract of the study. 58 articles were removed by reviewing the full text of the article because it was not relevant to the research. 360 studies with a sample size of 207,639,132 people were considered for the meta-analysis. Overall estimate of the prevalence, incidence and attenuation of anencephaly worldwide were 5.1 per ten thousand births (95% confidence interval 4.7-5.5 per ten thousand births), 8.3 per ten thousand births (95% confidence interval 5.5-9.9 per ten thousand births), 5.5 per ten thousand births (95% confidence interval 1.8-15 per ten thousand births) respectively the highest of which according to the subgroup analysis, belonged to the Australian continent with 8.6 per ten thousand births (95% confidence interval 7.7-9.5 per ten thousand births). CONCLUSION: The overall prevalence of anencephaly in the world is significant, indicating the urgent need for preventive and treating measures.

Overall estimate of the prevalence, incidence and attenuation of anencephaly worldwide were 5.1 per ten thousand births (95% confidence interval 4.7­5.5 per ten thousand births), 8.3 per ten thousand births (95% confidence interval 5.5­9.9 per ten thousand births), 5.5 per ten thousand births (95% confidence interval 1.8­15 per ten thousand births) respectively the highest of which according to the subgroup analysis, belonged to the Australian continent with 8.6 per ten thousand births (95% confidence interval 7.7­9.5 per ten thousand births). The overall prevalence of anencephaly in the world is significant, indicating the urgent need for preventive and treating measures.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases and is recognized as a global problem that is currently showing a growing trend. Cancer is one of the most stressful circumstances that a person may experience. Given how the mental state of patients with depression and anxiety may have a negative impact on their experience with cancer, this study was conducted with the aim to investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression in cancer patients in Iran. METHODS: This study was conducted using a systematic review method and based on the guideline Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020). The studies used were searched for via databases, Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), Google Scholar, SID, Magiran, and using keywords related to anxiety, depression, and cancer. After extracting the required data, statistical analysis was performed based on the random model and using the second version of Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Software. RESULTS: In a review of 24 studies with a sample size of 3225 people, the overall prevalence of depression in cancer patients in Iran was reported to be 50.1% (95% CI: 40.6-59.6). Additionally, in a review of 15 studies with a sample size of 2009, the overall prevalence of anxiety in cancer patients in Iran was reported to be 40.9% (95% CI: 30.9-51.6). The highest reported prevalence of depression in cancer patients in Iran according to the Beck questionnaire is 64.6 (95% CI: 48.2-78.1). Specifically, the highest prevalence of depression was reported in patients with breast cancer with a prevalence of 66 (95% CI: 50.9-78.4). The highest prevalence of anxiety in patients with cancer in Iran according to the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale was 49.2 (95% CI: 18.9-80.1). Comparatively, the highest prevalence of anxiety in patients with breast cancer was reported to be 53.2 (95% CI: 25.8-78.7). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of depression and anxiety among cancer patients in Iran, in particular patients with breast cancer, is significantly higher than in other parts of the world. The prevalence found in our study was even higher than the reported number by studies that have examined the disorder globally. Therefore, it is of great urgency for health system policymakers to work to improve the current situation.

COVID-19 affects several human genes, each with its own p-value. The combination of drugs associated with these genes with small p-values may lead to an estimation of the combined p-value between COVID-19 and some drug combinations, thereby increasing the effectiveness of these combinations in defeating the disease. Based on human genes, we introduced a new machine learning method that offers an effective drug combination with low combined p-values between them and COVID-19. This study follows an improved approach to systematic reviews, called the Systematic Review and Artificial Intelligence Network Meta-Analysis (RAIN), registered within PROSPERO (CRD42021256797), in which, the PRISMA criterion is still considered. Drugs used in the treatment of COVID-19 were searched in the databases of ScienceDirect, Web of Science (WoS), ProQuest, Embase, Medline (PubMed), and Scopus. In addition, using artificial intelligence and the measurement of the p-value between human genes affected by COVID-19 and drugs that have been suggested by clinical experts, and reported within the identified research papers, suitable drug combinations are proposed for the treatment of COVID-19. During the systematic review process, 39 studies were selected. Our analysis shows that most of the reported drugs, such as azithromycin and hydroxyl-chloroquine on their own, do not have much of an effect on the recovery of COVID-19 patients. Based on the result of the new artificial intelligence, on the other hand, at a significance level of less than 0.05, the combination of the two drugs therapeutic corticosteroid + camostat with a significance level of 0.02, remdesivir + azithromycin with a significance level of 0.03, and interleukin 1 receptor antagonist protein + camostat with a significance level 0.02 are considered far more effective for the treatment of COVID-19 and are therefore recommended. Additionally, at a significance level of less than 0.01, the combination of interleukin 1 receptor antagonist protein + camostat + azithromycin + tocilizumab + oseltamivir with a significance level of 0.006, and the combination of interleukin 1 receptor antagonist protein + camostat + chloroquine + favipiravir + tocilizumab7 with corticosteroid + camostat + oseltamivir + remdesivir + tocilizumab at a significant level of 0.009 are effective in the treatment of patients with COVID-19 and are also recommended. The results of this study provide sets of effective drug combinations for the treatment of patients with COVID-19. In addition, the new artificial intelligence used in the RAIN method could provide a forward-looking approach to clinical trial studies, which could also be used effectively in the treatment of diseases such as cancer.

BACKGROUND: Polypharmacy has traditionally been defined in various texts as the use of 5 or more chronic drugs, the use of inappropriate drugs, or drugs that are not clinically authorized. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of polypharmacy among the COVID-19 patients, and the side effects, by systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: This study was performed by systematic review method and in accordance with PRISMA 2020 criteria. The protocol in this work is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021281552). Particular databases and repositories have been searched to identify and select relevant studies. The quality of articles was assessed based on the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale checklist. Heterogeneity of the studies was measured using the I2 test. RESULTS: The results of meta-analysis showed that the prevalence of polypharmacy in 14 studies with a sample size of 189,870 patients with COVID-19 is 34.6% (95% CI: 29.6-40). Studies have shown that polypharmacy is associated with side effects, increased morbidity and mortality among patients with COVID-19. The results of meta-regression analysis reported that with increasing age of COVID-19 patients, the prevalence of polypharmacy increases (p < 0.05). DISCUSSION: The most important strength of this study is the updated search to June 2022 and the use of all databases to increase the accuracy and sensitivity of the study. The most important limitation of this study is the lack of proper definition of polypharmacy in some studies and not mentioning the number of drugs used for patients in these studies. CONCLUSION: Polypharmacy is seen in many patients with COVID-19. Since there is no definitive cure for COVID-19, the multiplicity of drugs used to treat this disease can affect the severity of the disease and its side effects as a result of drug interactions. This highlights the importance of controlling and managing prescription drugs for patients with COVID-19.

About half of the brain tumours are primary and the rest are metastatic. The impact of each of these treatments alone or together on the prognosis of patients with astrocytoma tumours, especially low-grade astrocytoma, is unclear which may pose many challenges in the decision-making of surgeons and patients. Considering the importance of patient's outcomes with astrocytoma and lack of general statistics, this study aimed to determine the survival of patients with high-grade astrocytoma and low-grade astrocytoma after treatments. This study follows a systematic review and a meta-analysis approach. Following a systematic review and meta-analysis method, articles dated from 1982 to March 2020 were extracted from Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science (WoS) international databases. Random effects model was used for analysis, and heterogeneity of studies was investigated considering the I 2 index. Data were analysed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 2). According to a meta-analysis of studies, the mean overall survival in patients with high-grade astrocytoma was 31.9 ± 2.7 months, for 2-year survival, 38.1% (95% CI: 27.5-50.1%) and for 5-year survival was 28.6% (95% CI: 24.1-33.4%). Mean overall survival in patients with low-grade astrocytoma was 64.8 ± 7.4 months, for 2-year survival was 74.3% (95% CI: 32.6-94.5%) and for 5-year survival was 74.4% (95% CI: 57.9-86%). The highest mean for survival in patients with high-grade astrocytoma and in chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments was 45.2 ± 5.2 months, and also the highest mean for survival in patients with low-grade astrocytoma in surgical treatment was 71.4 ± 8.8 months. The results of this study show that the average survival in patients with low-grade astrocytoma is high following the treatment, and in high-grade astrocytoma, there will be the highest survival rate, if the surgical treatment is combined with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This study summarizes retrospective studies up to 2020 to evaluate the prognosis and survival of patients with brain astrocytoma tumours, and the results of this meta-analysis can be of interest to surgeons and specialists in this field.

Recent advances in nanotechnology sciences lead to the development of new treatment approaches for various diseases such as cancer. Nanotechnology advances can potentially minimize the side effects of drugs through the employment of effective and controlled drug delivery systems (DDSs). Polymers are optimal tools providing drug delivery mechanisms through the unique features of pharmacokinetics, circulation time, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. This systematic review aimed to evaluate polymer-based DDSs for anticancer drugs and their various therapeutic applications in cancer treatment. This study was conducted with no time limitation by November 2021. Related articles were collected through a deep search in English and Persian databases of SID, MagIran, Scopus, Web Of Science (WoS), PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Keywords included drug delivery system, anticancer agent, polymeric nanostructure-based drug delivery, polymer-based drug delivery, and polymeric system. As the results showed, polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) have influential roles in cancer treatment than conventional chemotherapy procedures. PNPs can reduce cytotoxicity following chemotherapy drug administration, improve the solubility characteristics of these therapeutic agents and inhibit the rate of tumor growth.

Liver transplantation is a life-saving treatment for children who are in liver failure. The survival rate index is used to assess the success rate of liver transplantation. The study aimed to assess the survival rate of liver transplantation in children. We searched 5 international databases in this study, including Medline/PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, Web of Knowledge, and Google Scholar, for published articles by the end of 2020. Also, meta-regression analysis was performed based on the year of the study, and subgroup analysis was performed according to continents. A total of 425 titles were reviewed. Based on the results, 96 articles were entered in the meta-analysis. Established on the random-effect model, the survival rates of 1, 3, 5, and 10 years of transplantation were 86.62%, 77.74%, 73.95%, and 68.60%, respectively. Also, based on the meta-regression results, there was a relationship between the year of the study and the survival rate, as the study year gets more recent, the survival rate is increased. This study can provide documented and comprehensive evidence which can be the basis of many policies and decisions in various sectors of health development, including evaluating treatment options and health interventions in transplantation.
