RESUMO

Super engineering plastics, high-performance thermoplastic resins, show high thermal stability and mechanical strength as well as chemical resistance. On the other hand, chemical recycling for these plastics has not been developed due to their stability. This study describes depolymerization of oxyphenylene super engineering plastics via carbon-oxygen main chain cleaving hydroxylation reaction with an alkali hydroxide nucleophile. This method is conducted with cesium hydroxide as a hydroxy source and calcium hydride as a dehydration agent in 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone, which provides hydroxylated monomers effectively. In the case of polysulfone, both 4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol (bisphenol S) and 4,4'-(propane-2,2-diyl)diphenol (bisphenol A) were obtained in high yields. Other super engineering plastics such as polyethersulfone, polyphenylsulfone, and polyetheretherketone were also applicable to this depolymerization.

RESUMO

Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) is one of the most important engineering plastics commonly utilized in various fields. Herein, chemical recycling of PPO was performed via oxidative depolymerization to form 2,6-diemthyl-p-benzoquionone (26DMBQ) as a sole aromatic product in 66 % yield using nitronium ions (NO2 + ) as a mild oxidant. Mechanistic studies revealed that PPO is oxidized by NO2 + generated from the combination of a silicotungstic acid and nitrate salts, and then subsequently attacked by H2 O to achieve C-O bond cleavage, resulting in the formation of 26DMBQ, which was sublimed at the headspace of the reaction vessel in pure form. 26DMBQ was applied to polymerization with dianilines to form polyimides. Thus, an upgrade recycling process of PPO was demonstrated.

RESUMO

Super engineering plastics, high-performance thermoplastic resins such as polyetheretherketone, and polyphenylene sulfide have been utilized in industries, owing to their high thermal stability and mechanical strength. However, their robustness hinders their depolymerization to produce monomers and low-weight molecules. Presently, chemical recycling for most super engineering plastics remains relatively unexplored. Herein, we report the depolymerization of insoluble polyetheretherketone using sulfur nucleophiles via carbon-oxygen bond cleavages to form benzophenone dithiolate and hydroquinone. Treatment with organic halides converted only the former products to afford various dithiofunctionalized benzophenones. The depolymerization proceeded as a solid-liquid reaction in the initial phase. Therefore, this method was not affected by the shape of polyetheretherketone, e.g., pellets or films. Moreover, this depolymerization method was applicable to carbon- or glass fiber-enforced polyetheretherketone material. The depolymerized product, dithiofunctionalized benzophenones, could be converted into diiodobenzophenone, which was applicable to the polymerization.

RESUMO

Simultaneous improvement in the mechanical properties and lifetime of polymer nanocomposites is crucially significant to further extend the versatility of polymer materials and reduce environmental impact. In this study, we fabricated reinforced polypropylene (PP)-based nanocomposites with improved aging stability by the addition of surface-modified well-ordered silica nanospheres with a silane coupling agent (SCA) containing hindered phenol antioxidant as a filler. Uniform grafting of the SCA on the filler surface contributed to homogeneous dispersion of the filler into the matrix, leading to improved properties (e.g., stiffness and ductility) and uniform distribution of the antioxidant component into the entire nanocomposite by filler dispersion. The grafting of SCA also likely provides an inhibitory effect on antioxidant migration, which leads to loss of polymer stability during the aging process. This novel idea for the material design of PP-based nanocomposites, which simultaneously enhances their mechanical properties and lifetime, is promising for application in the fabrication of various types of polymer nanocomposites.

RESUMO

In this account, our studies on nickel-catalyzed hydrosilylation reactions are described. A series of (salicylaldiminato)methylnickel complexes efficiently catalyze alkene hydrosilylation under ambient reaction conditions. Commercially available Ni(II) salts, Ni(acac)2 (acac = acetylacetonato) and its derivatives bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)nickel(II) and bis (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)nickel(II), also act as versatile hydrosilylation catalyst precursors in the presence of NaBHEt3 . These systems catalyze the hydrosilylation of various alkenes such as industrially important siloxy-, amino-, and epoxy-substituted ones. The arene-supported cationic nickel allyl complexes also serve as good catalysts for alkene hydrosilylation at room temperature. These nickel complexes exhibit high selectivity towards the reaction using secondary hydrosilanes. Mechanistic studies based on experiments and DFT calculations support a novel mechanism, which includes a facile Si-H bond cleavage and a Si-C bond formation, assisted by the cooperative action of the allyl ligand.

RESUMO

Encapsulation of cytokines within protein microcrystals (polyhedra) is a promising approach for the stabilization and delivery of therapeutic proteins. Here, we investigate the influence of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) microcrystals and endostatin microcrystals on angiogenesis. VEGF was successfully encapsulated into microcrystals derived from insect cypovirus with overexpression of protein disulfide bond isomerase. VEGF microcrystals were observed to increase the phosphorylation of p42/p44 MAP kinase and to stimulate the proliferation, migration, and network and tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Endostatin was also successfully encapsulated into microcrystals. Endostatin microcrystals showed antiangiogenesis activities and inhibited the migration, and network and tube formation of HUVECs. Local administration of endostatin microcrystals in mice inhibited both angiogenesis and tumor growth with clear significant differences between treatment and control groups. Endostatin microcrystals only affected angiogenesis, but had no significant effect on lymphangiogenesis compared to controls. Local therapy using endostatin microcrystals offers a potential approach to achieve sustained therapeutic release of antiangiogenic molecules for cancer treatment.

RESUMO

Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) may enhance periodontal wound healing by inducing angiogenesis. We sought to investigate the effect and the mechanism of action of EMD on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production by human gingival fibroblasts. Cells were stimulated with EMD, transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1), or fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2), with or without antibodies to TGF-ß1 or FGF-2. The levels of VEGF in the culture media were measured using an ELISA. We examined the effects of SB203580 [a p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor], U0126 [an extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) inhibitor], SP600125 [a c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) inhibitor], and LY294002 [a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt inhibitor] on EMD-induced VEGF production. Enamel matrix derivative stimulated the production of VEGF in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Treatment of human gingival fibroblasts with antibodies to TGF-ß1 or FGF-2 significantly decreased EMD-induced VEGF production, whereas the addition of exogenous TGF-ß1 and FGF-2 stimulated VEGF production. Enamel matrix derivative-induced VEGF production was significantly attenuated by SB203580, U0126, and LY294002. Our results suggest that EMD stimulates VEGF production partially via TGF-ß1 and FGF-2 in human gingival fibroblasts and that EMD-induced VEGF production is regulated by ERK, p38 MAPK, and PI3K/Akt pathways. Enamel matrix derivative-induced production of VEGF by human gingival fibroblasts may be involved in the enhancement of periodontal wound healing by inducing angiogenesis.

RESUMO

This study describes the molecular phylogeny, laboratory rearing, and karyotype of a bombycid moth, Trilocha varians (F. Walker) (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae), which feeds on leaves of Ficus spp. (Rosales: Moraceae). The larvae of this species were collected in Taipei city, Taiwan, and the Ryukyu Archipelago (Ishigaki and Okinawa Islands, Japan). Molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that T. varians belongs to the subfamily Bombycinae, thus showing a close relationship to the domesticated silkworm Bombyx mori (L.), a lepidopteran model insect. A laboratory method was developed for rearing T. varians and the time required for development from the embryo to adult was determined. From oviposition to adult emergence, the developmental zero was 10.47 °C and total effective temperature was 531.2 day-degrees, i.e., approximately 30 days for one generation when reared at 28 °C. The haploid of T. varians consisted of n = 26 chromosomes. In highly polyploid somatic nuclei, females showed a large heterochromatin body, indicating that the sex chromosome system in T. varians is WZ/ZZ (female/male). The results of the present study should facilitate the utilization of T. varians as a reference species for B. mori, thereby leading to a greater understanding of the ecology and evolution of bombycid moths.

RESUMO

A case of granular cell tumor (GCT) was reported. We encountered a 33-year-old woman with a painless, elastic, hard mass in the soft tissue of the suprasternal space. The tumor was excised with several millimeters margin of normal tissue above the deep cervical fascia and the wound was closed primarily. Histological examination on hematoxylin-eosin stain showed a tumor growth in the mid- to deep dermis and eosinophilic small granules that were consistent with granular cell tumors. Immunohistochemical studies showed positive staining for S-100 protein. We experienced a case of a granular cell tumor occurring in the suprasternal space and report the importance of including it in the differential diagnosis of subcutaneous soft tissue tumors.

RESUMO

A 15-electron iron complex with a formal Fe(I) center, [FeBr(BPEP)] (BPEP = 2,6-bis(1-phenyl-2-phosphaethenyl)pyridine), was prepared by one-electron reduction of the dibromide precursor [FeBr(2)(BPEP)]. The single-crystal diffraction analysis revealed a distorted trigonal monopyramidal arrangement around the iron center, and SQUID magnetometry established the S = 3/2 ground state. The Mossbauer isomer shift value (delta = 0.59 mm/s) was consistent with a high-spin Fe(I) center of [FeBr(BPEP)]. DFT calculations for a model complex revealed two highly delocalized molecular orbitals formed by bonding and antibonding interactions between the d(z(2)) (Fe) and pi* (BPEP) orbitals. Orbital occupancy analysis demonstrated the electronic structure with a high-spin Fe(I) center. The effective dpi-ppi interaction between iron and BPEP was concluded to be responsible for the highly distorted structure of [FeBr(BPEP)], with its rather uncommon trigonal monopyramidal configuration.

RESUMO

Endocannabinoids including anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) are important lipid mediators for immunosuppressive effects and for appropriate homeostasis via their G-protein-coupled cannabinoid (CB) receptors in mammalian organs and tissues, and may be involved in wound healing in some organs. The physiological roles of endocannabinoids in periodontal healing remain unknown. We observed upregulation of the expression of CB1/CB2 receptors localized on fibroblasts and macrophage-like cells in granulation tissue during wound healing in a wound-healing model in rats, as well as an increase in AEA levels in gingival crevicular fluid after periodontal surgery in human patients with periodontitis. In-vitro, the proliferation of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) by AEA was significantly attenuated by AM251 and AM630, which are selective antagonists of CB1 and CB2, respectively. CP55940 (CB1/CB2 agonist) induced phosphorylation of the extracellular-regulated kinases (ERK) 1/2, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK), and Akt in HGFs. Wound closure by CP55940 in an in-vitro scratch assay was significantly suppressed by inhibitors of MAP kinase kinase (MEK), p38MAPK, and phosphoinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K). These findings suggest that endocannabinoid system may have an important role in periodontal healing.

RESUMO

The planning of an operation based on three-dimensional imaging has been used mainly in orthognathic surgery. It is a useful way to plan the preoperative treatment as well as to make the postoperative evaluation. We used this technique in breast reconstruction. For the evaluation of breast volume and contour, we used three-dimensional photography by laser scanner, and these were analysed intraoperatively. Three-dimensional data obtained during the operation gave us precise information about the volume and contour of the breast.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in normal oral mucosa, and to observe the natural history in the oral cavity in oral swab samples collected from healthy volunteers on Miyako Island, Okinawa, Japan. STUDY DESIGN: The prevalence of HPV infection in oral buccal mucosa cell scrapes collected between 2000 and 2002 from a cohort of 668 healthy volunteers was determined. HPV DNA was detected by consensus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using MY09/MY11 primers followed by direct cycle sequencing. Just over 2 years later the HPV-positive participants were reevaluated. RESULTS: Of the 668 subjects, 662 samples were analyzed for HPV. HPV DNA was detected in 4 (0.6%) specimens. HPV type 16 (HPV16), HPV53, and HPV71, mucosal types, and HPV12, a cutaneous type, were all identified by direct sequencing. In the follow-up survey, the HPV71- and HPV12-positive participants again tested positive, while HPV DNA was not detected in the HPV16- and HPV53-positive participants. CONCLUSION: The results of this study among healthy individuals from Miyako Island suggest that oral HPV infection is uncommon. In this cohort, HPV71 and HPV12 were persistent, while HPV16 and HPV53 were transient in normal oral mucosa.
