PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to clarify an association between short sleep duration and smoking initiation. METHODS: Participants eligible for this retrospective cohort study were university students who were admitted to a single national university in Japan between 2007 and 2015. Baseline sleep duration and smoking status were measured using general questionnaires at health checkups at admission. During a 6-year observation period, smoking initiation was assessed using general questionnaires at annual health checkups. Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for clinically relevant factors were used to assess the association between sleep duration and smoking initiation. RESULTS: Of 17,493 men, including 540, 5,568, 8,458, 2,507, and 420 men with sleep duration of < 5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8, and ≥ 8 h, respectively, smoking initiation was observed in 16.1%, 12.5%, 11.2%, 10.0%, and 11.7%, respectively, during a median observation period of 3.0 years. Men with shorter sleep duration were at a higher risk of smoking initiation (adjusted hazard ratio 1.49 [95% confidence interval 1.19-1.85], 1.11 [1.01-1.22], 1.00 [reference], 0.92 [0.80-1.06], and 1.00 [0.75-1.34], respectively). Of 8,880 women, including 267, 3,163, 4,220, and 1,230 women with sleep duration of < 5, 5-6, 6-7, and ≥ 7 h, respectively, smoking initiation was observed in 4.9%, 2.3%, 2.0%, and 2.2%, respectively, during a median observation period of 3.0 years. A similar dose dependent association was ascertained in women (2.50 [1.39-4.49], 1.18 [0.86-1.62], 1.00 [reference], and 1.22 [0.79-1.89], respectively). CONCLUSION: This study clarified that university students with short sleep duration were vulnerable to smoking initiation.

Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure causes various health problems associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. However, the lifestyles of individuals exposed to SHS have not been characterized extensively. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between SHS exposure and lifestyle behaviors. The participants were 2379 healthy male employees at Osaka University who underwent health examinations. Physical and biochemical parameters and lifestyle behavior data were obtained from all the participants. Participants with SHS exposure had significantly higher body mass index, waist circumference, and serum levels of triglycerides and uric acid than that of those without SHS exposure. SHS exposure was significantly correlated with several lifestyle behaviors, including TV time, frequency of breakfast consumption and fried food consumption, vegetable and fruit intake, alcohol consumption frequency and daily alcohol intake, and smoking status. Thus, SHS exposure may be associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. The lifestyle behaviors of the smoke-excluded population were assessed further; however, SHS exposure was still associated with dietary and drinking habits. Since participants with SHS exposure are likely to have an unhealthy life and combined unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, the confounding effect of these factors should be considered when assessing the impact of SHS exposure on health.

Increased expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is one of the likely explanations for disease severity in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In this study, we aimed to test whether soluble ACE2 (sACE2) levels are correlated to known risk factors of severe COVID-19 including biochemical parameters, body mass index and smoking habits. We cross-sectionally evaluated serum sACE2 levels in obese or tobacco-smoking populations and compared them to those in non-obese and non-smoking healthy participants. Additionally, fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF21) was investigated as a candidate regulator of sACE2. A total of 220 male participants aged 30-59 years undergoing an annual health checkup were enrolled in this study: 59 obese, 80 smokers, and 81 healthy. Serum sACE2 levels were significantly higher in obese participants but not in tobacco-smoking participants when compared to healthy participants. sACE2 levels were significantly correlated with total cholesterol and triglycerides but not with body mass index. Furthermore, no regulatory relationship was found between FGF21 and sACE2. Lipid metabolism disorders accompanied by upregulation of serum sACE2 may be underlying mechanisms of COVID-19 aggravation and might be a novel breakthrough treatment target.

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 21 has various functions, including glucose and lipid metabolism. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate specific conditions that might influence the functions of FGF21. 398 men who underwent a health examination were enrolled in this study. Physical and biochemical parameters and information on several lifestyle behaviors were obtained from all subjects. FGF21 levels correlated with age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GTP), uric acid, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and HbA1c. Moreover, FGF21 levels were significantly associated with lifestyle behaviors, including smoking status and breakfast and alcohol consumption frequency. Multivariable regression analysis showed that age, ALT, γ-GTP, smoking status, and breakfast and alcohol consumption frequency were independent variables for FGF21 levels. Assessment among the non-obese and obese groups showed that FGF21 levels correlated with WC, SBP, and TC only in the non-obese group. Thus, serum FGF21 levels were affected by several factors, including lifestyle behaviors, age, and liver function. To assess the functions of FGF21 in individuals, considering these factors would be essential.

There is an unmet need for novel biomarkers in the diagnosis of multifactorial COPD. We applied next-generation proteomics to serum extracellular vesicles (EVs) to discover novel COPD biomarkers. EVs from 10 patients with COPD and six healthy controls were analysed by tandem mass tag-based non-targeted proteomics, and those from elastase-treated mouse models of emphysema were also analysed by non-targeted proteomics. For validation, EVs from 23 patients with COPD and 20 healthy controls were validated by targeted proteomics. Using non-targeted proteomics, we identified 406 proteins, 34 of which were significantly upregulated in patients with COPD. Of note, the EV protein signature from patients with COPD reflected inflammation and remodelling. We also identified 63 upregulated candidates from 1956 proteins by analysing EVs isolated from mouse models. Combining human and mouse biomarker candidates, we validated 45 proteins by targeted proteomics, selected reaction monitoring. Notably, levels of fibulin-3, tripeptidyl-peptidase 2, fibulin-1, and soluble scavenger receptor cysteine-rich domain-containing protein were significantly higher in patients with COPD. Moreover, six proteins; fibulin-3, tripeptidyl-peptidase 2, UTP-glucose-1-phosphate uridylyl transferase, CD81, CD177, and oncoprotein-induced transcript 3, were correlated with emphysema. Upregulation of fibulin-3 was confirmed by immunoblotting of EVs and immunohistochemistry in lungs. Strikingly, fibulin-3 knockout mice spontaneously developed emphysema with age, as evidenced by alveolar enlargement and elastin destruction. We discovered potential pathogenic biomarkers for COPD using next-generation proteomics of EVs. This is a novel strategy for biomarker discovery and precision medicine.

Stress is known as a risk factor for both mental and physical health problems. While stress is known as one of the major health problems in modern society, a biomarker of stress has not yet been well established. In the present study, we focused on the serum levels of α-Klotho (αKl) as a possible objective biomarker of stress. Subjects included apparently healthy individuals who underwent a health examination in the Osaka University Health and Counseling Center. Physical and biochemical parameters were obtained from all subjects. Information regarding the lifestyle of each individual was obtained via questionnaires. Among male subjects, serum levels of soluble αKl (sαKl) were significantly elevated in subjects who had poor stress management and unsatisfactory sleep, suggesting that stress management and sleeping conditions influenced the serum levels of sαKl. The total Kessler Screening Scale for Psychological Distress (K6) score was significantly increased in subjects who reported experiencing considerable stress, had poor stress management and unsatisfactory sleep. Since serum levels of sαKl showed the same tendency as the K6 score in terms of the relationship between stress management and sleeping conditions in male subjects, increased sαKl levels could be associated with considerable psychological stress in healthy men.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been recently characterized as a disease of accelerated lung aging, but the mechanism remains unclear. Tetraspanins have emerged as key players in malignancy and inflammatory diseases. Here, we found that CD9/CD81 double knockout (DKO) mice with a COPD-like phenotype progressively developed a syndrome resembling human aging, including cataracts, hair loss, and atrophy of various organs, including thymus, muscle, and testis, resulting in shorter survival than wild-type (WT) mice. Consistent with this, DNA microarray analysis of DKO mouse lungs revealed differential expression of genes involved in cell death, inflammation, and the sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) pathway. Accordingly, expression of SIRT1 was reduced in DKO mouse lungs. Importantly, siRNA knockdown of CD9 and CD81 in lung epithelial cells additively decreased SIRT1 and Foxo3a expression, but reciprocally upregulated the expression of p21 and p53, leading to reduced cell proliferation and elevated apoptosis. Furthermore, deletion of these tetraspanins increased the expression of pro-inflammatory genes and IL-8. Hence, CD9 and CD81 might coordinately prevent senescence and inflammation, partly by maintaining SIRT1 expression. Altogether, CD9/CD81 DKO mice represent a novel model for both COPD and accelerated senescence.

BACKGROUND: Men and women react differently to some disease states, and women are reported to be more sensitive than men to the toxic effects of smoking. We examined the serum concentration of Klotho-related molecules, α-Klotho (αKl) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-21, and the influence of smoking on these molecules in both sexes. METHODS: Subjects included 90 men and 140 women in good health who underwent a health examination. RESULTS: Among male subjects, serum concentrations of FGF-21, soluble sαKl, and inflammation-related cytokine interleukin (IL)-6 were significantly higher in smokers than in never-smokers. In females, serum concentrations of FGF-21 and IL-6 were significantly higher in smokers than in never-smokers; however, sαKl concentrations were slightly lower in smokers than in never-smokers. Serum concentrations of sαKl were correlated with smoking status and IL-6 only in male subjects, suggesting an anti-inflammatory effect of sαKl only in men. Serum concentrations of FGF-21 were correlated with the concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and HbA1c, which are important factors of metabolic disorders in females, suggesting that metabolic disorders in female smokers may be more serious than that in male smokers. CONCLUSIONS: Klotho-related molecules showed a differential association and response to smoking between men and women.

AIM: To identify predictive markers for efficacy of combination bevacizumab and carboplatin-paclitaxel treatment in patients with advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients received carboplatin (area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) 6 mg/ml×min) and paclitaxel (200 mg/m2) with bevacizumab (15 mg/kg) on day 1 of a 21-day cycle. After four cycles of induction therapy, patients received bevacizumab maintenance therapy until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity occurred. Plasma and serum samples (baseline, day 8 and before cycle 2) were analyzed for natriuretic peptide content. RESULTS: Plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels were significantly decreased at day 8 (20.1±4.0 pg/ml vs. 9.1±1.8 pg/ml, p=0.0002). Patients whose plasma BNP level was reduced to <50% of the baseline at day 8 had a longer progression-free survival (PFS) than those with a less decrease (9.73 versus 2.63 months, p=0.00013). In multivariate Cox analysis, decrease of plasma BNP concentration was associated with a longer PFS (p=0.0022). CONCLUSION: Decrease of plasma BNP concentration correlated with PFS after a treatment of combination bevacizumab plus carboplatin-paclitaxel.

Diagnosing sepsis can be very difficult and without prompt treatment, sepsis frequently results in death. No definitive biomarker for diagnosing sepsis currently exists, although the use of various biomarkers, includ- ing procalcitonin (PCT), as diagnostic indicators has been considered valuable. The biomarker presepsin (P- SEP) has gained attention as a diagnostic tool for sepsis since health insurance coverage approval in Japan in 2014. In this study, we categorized 156 children into five groups based on the presence or absence of sys- temic inflammatory response syndrome and infection, and compared the levels of P-SEP and PCT among these groups. Furthermore, they were categorized into five groups based on the diagnosed disease, and the P-SEP and PCT levels were compared among these groups. The P-SEP levels exceeded the cut-off value in all patients with sepsis, and patients of other groups hardly exceeded the cut-off value. In contrast, the PCT levels increased in patients with sepsis, but those in other groups, particularly in local infection, also exceed- ed the cut-off value. Similarly, during the diagnosed disease classification, PCT levels also increased in Ka- wasaki disease. In conclusion, P-SEP could be a useful biomarker for the diagnosis of sepsis in children and should be studied further. [Short Communication].

While aging is unavoidable, the aging mechanism is still unclear because of its complexity. Smoking causes premature death and is considered as an environmental aging accelerator. In the present study, we focused on the influence of smoking to the serum concentration of anti-aging protein α-klotho (αKl) and the ß-klotho-associated protein fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-21 in men. Subjects consisted of apparently healthy men over 40 years of age who underwent health examination. Physical and biochemical parameters, including the levels of several cytokines and growth factors, were obtained from the subjects. Among middle-aged men (46.1 ± 5.1 years), serum levels of FGF-21, soluble αKl (sαKl), and inflammation-related cytokine interleukin (IL)-6 were significantly higher in smokers than in never-smokers. Serum levels of FGF-21 increased and correlated with alanine transaminase, γ guanosine-5'-triphosphate, and total cholesterol only in smokers, suggesting FGF-21 as a metabolic disorder-related factor in smokers. In aged men (60.3 ± 1.7 years), although the serum levels of sαKl in never-smokers were low, smokers showed highly increased serum levels of sαKl. Serum levels of sαKl was correlated with IL-6 in middle-aged never-smokers, suggesting sαKl regulates IL-6. However, this correlation was disrupted in smokers and aged men.

A 61-year-old male who originally visited a different hospital, underwent a health checkup in which multiple lung nodules were detected. Multiple well-defined small nodules were observed in both lungs, with lesions reaching the arteries. Metastatic lung cancer, with unknown origin, was suspected. A computed tomography-guided percutaneous lung biopsy was performed; however, a pathological diagnosis could not be established. Then the patient was referred to our hospital for surgical lung biopsy. Macroscopically, the nodule was dark-red in color and solid without a capsule. Microscopically, the nodule was composed of dilated vascular spaces lined by flattened bland cells. They were positive for CD34, but were negative for TTF-1, consistent with lesions of endothelial origin. Microscopic and immunohistochemical findings supported the diagnosis of multiple pulmonary cavernous hemangiomas. After diagnosis, the lesions were left untreated and thereafter showed no signs of deterioration.

BACKGROUND: Smoking and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are major public health problems in modern society and are important risk factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The association of smoking, MetS, and CVD is widely reported, but reports targeted to women are few. In the present study, we evaluated risk factors, including visceral fat area (VFA), for CVD and development of subclinical atherosclerosis in female smokers especially. METHODS AND RESULTS: Subjects consisted of 162 apparent healthy female and male smokers, and 315 age-matched never-smokers who underwent a health examination in the Osaka University Health Care Center. For female smokers, lifestyle and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) were evaluated. Triglycerides were significantly higher and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol significantly lower in smokers than in never-smokers for both men and women. However, VFA was significantly high only in smoking women when compared with never-smokers. Multivariate analysis revealed that age, body mass index, and smoking were the independent predictors of high VFA in women. In addition, annual IMT increase was significantly higher in smokers than never-smokers in women. CONCLUSIONS: VFA was notably high in female smokers, but the difference was not observed in men. Smoking habit is an important risk factor of visceral fat accumulation and progression of subclinical atherosclerosis in women.

In the immunological fecal occult blood test, an antibody to hemoglobin (Hb) is primarily used. For such a test, the usefulness of an antibody to transferrin (Tf) has not been well examined. To compare Tf and Hb as markers of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, we conducted a quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for both proteins in 53 cases, with subsequent analysis based on lesion groups (malignant tumor, benign tumor, or inflammation). Hb testing showed no differences among the lesion groups, whereas the positive rate of Tf was significantly higher in the malignant group than in the inflammatory group. Moreover, the case positive for only Tf corresponded to one malignant case among the 53 cases. On the basis of this result, using a qualitative test, we further tested 878 cases that were positive for only Tf. We found that 81 cases positive for only Tf corresponded to various lesions, particularly 4 cases that corresponded to a malignant tumor. In conclusion, our results suggest that concurrent measurement of Hb and Tf should be a more effective test for gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

Tetraspanins organize protein complexes in tetraspanin-enriched membrane microdomains that are distinct from lipid rafts. Our previous studies suggested that reduction in the levels of tetraspanins CD9 and CD81 may be involved in the progression of inflammatory lung diseases, especially COPD. To search for agents that increase the levels of these tetraspanins, we screened 1,165 drugs in clinical use and found that statins upregulate CD9 and CD81 in RAW264.7 macrophages. The lipophilic statins, fluvastatin and simvastatin, reversed LPS-induced downregulation of CD9 and CD81, simultaneously preventing TNF-α and matrix metalloproteinase-9 production and spreading of RAW264.7 cells. These statins exerted anti-inflammatory effects in vitro in wild-type macrophages but not in CD9 knockout macrophages, and decreased lung inflammation in vivo in wild-type mice but not in CD9 knockout mice, suggesting that their effects are dependent on CD9. Mechanistically, the statins promoted reverse transfer of the LPS-signaling mediator CD14 from lipid rafts into CD9-enriched microdomains, thereby preventing LPS receptor formation. Finally, upregulation of CD9/CD81 by statins was related to blockade of GTPase geranylgeranylation in the mevalonate pathway. Our data underscore the importance of the negative regulator CD9 in lung inflammation, and suggest that statins exert anti-inflammatory effects by upregulating tetraspanin CD9 in macrophages.

Tetraspanins have emerged as key players in malignancy and inflammatory diseases, yet little is known about their roles in angiogenesis, and nothing is known about their involvement in lymphangiogenesis. We found here that tetraspanins are abundantly expressed in human lymphatic endothelial cells (LEC). After intrathoracic tumor implantation, metastasis to lymph nodes was diminished and accompanied by decreased angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in tetraspanin CD9-KO mice. Moreover, lymphangiomas induced in CD9-KO mice were less pronounced with decreased lymphangiogenesis compared with those in wild-type mice. Although mouse LEC isolated from CD9-KO mice showed normal adhesion, lymphangiogenesis was markedly impaired in several assays (migration, proliferation, and cable formation) in vitro and in the lymphatic ring assay ex vivo. Consistent with these findings in mouse LEC, knocking down CD9 in human LEC also produced decreased migration, proliferation, and cable formation. Immunoprecipitation analysis demonstrated that deletion of CD9 in LEC diminished formation of functional complexes between VEGF receptor-3 and integrins (α5 and α9). Therefore, knocking down CD9 in LEC attenuated VEGF receptor-3 signaling, as well as downstream signaling such as Erk and p38 upon VEGF-C stimulation. Finally, double deletion of CD9/CD81 in mice caused abnormal development of lymphatic vasculature in the trachea and diaphragm, suggesting that CD9 and a closely related tetraspanin CD81 coordinately play an essential role in physiological lymphangiogenesis. In conclusion, tetraspanin CD9 modulates molecular organization of integrins in LEC, thereby supporting several functions required for lymphangiogenesis.

Adiponectin (APN) is a unique adipokine with multiple salutary effects such as antiapoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative activities in numerous organs and cells. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a growing cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, often results from the smoking habit and is considered a lifestyle-related disease. COPD is frequently complicated with comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and osteoporosis; however, the molecular mechanisms linking COPD and the associated comorbidities are poorly understood. Recent data have revealed a role for APN in the lung; mice lacking APN spontaneously develop a COPD-like phenotype with extrapulmonary effects, including systemic inflammation, body weight loss, and osteoporosis. This finding highlights the key role of APN in lung pathology and the novel cross talk between lung and adipose tissues. This review summarizes recent advances in understanding the physiological and pathological role of APN in the lung.

RATIONALE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is frequently complicated with comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and body weight loss, but the causal link remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of adiponectin in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and its potential use in therapy. METHODS: Adiponectin localization and dynamics in the lung were analyzed in an elastase-induced emphysema model. Next, the lung of adiponectin-knockout mice, extrapulmonary effects, and the underlying mechanism were investigated. Finally, we tested whether exogenous adiponectin could ameliorate the emphysematous change in adiponectin-knockout mice. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Adiponectin expression in lung vasculature and plasma concentration of adiponectin were reduced after elastase-instillation. Notably, adiponectin-knockout mice showed progressive alveolar enlargement and increased lung compliance. They further exhibited not only systemic inflammation, but also extrapulmonary phenotype, such as body weight loss, fat atrophy, and osteoporosis. Moreover, endothelial apoptosis was enhanced in the lungs of adiponectin-knockout mice, as evidenced by caspase-3 activity. Consistent with this, expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 on endothelial cells were decreased in the adiponectin-knockout mice. Finally, adenovirus-mediated adiponectin supplementation ameliorated the emphysematous phenotype. CONCLUSIONS: Adiponectin-knockout mice develop progressive chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-like phenotype with systemic inflammation and extrapulmonary phenotypes. Hypoadiponectinemia could thus play a critical role in the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and concomitant comorbidities through endothelial dysfunction. Together, adiponectin could be a novel target for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease therapy.

We have performed the clinical evaluations of preoperative induction chemoradiotherapy (CRTx) for 25 patients with non small-cell lung cancer (male: 19, female: 6, mean age: 66.4-year-old). The clinical stages of these patients were IIA: 1, IIB: 7, IIIA: 14, and IIIB: 3, respectively. In the histological type of lung cancer, there were 12 patients of adenocarcinoma, 7 of squamous cell carcinoma, 1 of adenosquamous carcinoma, 1 of anaplastic carcinoma, and 4 of large cell carcinoma. We applied two courses of regimen as the pre-operative chemotherapy (CDDP+DOC or CBDCA+PTX). Twenty-four patients received radiotherapy as the concurrent radiotherapy (44 Gy: 22 patients, 60 Gy: 2 patients). Among the 25 patients, 16 patients accomplished both chemotherapies, and the effects of the treatment were as follows: CR; none, PR; 15, SD; 9, respectively. And the other patient was not an evaluable case due to atelectasis. Histopathological effects (Ef) were Ef-3: 3, Ef-2: 11, Ef-1: 7, Ef-0: 1 and Ef was not evaluable in 3 cases. Post operative pathological findings showed that 14 patients were down staged. There were no operative mortality associated with the operation, and no serious morbidity case was observed. Eighteen patients were survived and 1 patient was survived with tumor metastases. Only one patient died of recurrence in the upper mediastinal lymph nodes, 3 patients died of the brain metastases, one died of hepatic metastasis, and one died of cryptogenic sudden death. As a result, there was no serious operative morbidity observed in the course of this CRTx. We therefore recommend that induction chemoradiotherapy as a beneficial pre-operative treatment.

BACKGROUND: Gastroenteritis is a world-wide disorder. Numerous studies to identify causative viral agents have been reported for hospitalized patients but there are only a few for outpatients with mild symptoms who are usually managed in the outpatient clinics. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to clarify the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of acute gastroenteritis in children who visited the outpatient clinics with various complaints suggestive of gastroenteritis. STUDY DESIGN: From December 2003 to December 2005, 877 rectal swabs were collected from patients attending outpatient clinics in Sapporo, Japan. Viral genomes of major five enteric viruses (rotavirus, norovirus, adenovirus, astrovirus and sapovirus) and bocavirus were investigated by RT-PCR or PCR. RESULTS: At least one viral agent was found in 326 (37.2%) cases of the 877 studied. Rotaviruses were the most prevalent and were detected in 143 (16.3%) followed by norovirus in 116 (13.2%), adenovirus in 42 (4.8%), astrovirus in 40 (4.6%) and sapovirus in 15 (1.7%) cases. Bocavirus was detected in only 4 (0.5%) cases. Frequent diarrhea and frequent vomiting were prominent in rotavirus and norovirus infection, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of each enteric virus in outpatients resembled that previously estimated in hospitalized patients, although the detection rate of rotavirus was slightly low. The contribution of bocavirus appears to be small.
