This study aims to investigate how bioactivities of the coral surface mucus layer (SML) respond to changes in mucus-associated bacterial communities between bleached and healthy Porites lobata corals in Nha Trang Bay, Vietnam. The findings suggested that significant shifts in the mucus-associated bacterial communities were related to changes in coral health states from bleached to healthy P. lobata colonies (p < 0.05), while bacterial compositions were not significantly different across seasons and locations (p > 0.05). Of which 8 genera, Shewanella, Fusibacter, Halodesulfovibrio, Marinifilum, Endozoicomonas, Litoribacillus, Algicola, and Vibrio were present only in the SML of bleached coral while absent in the SML of the healthy one. As compared with the bleached SML, the healthy SML demonstrated stronger antibacterial activity against a coral bleaching pathogen, V. coralliilyticus, higher antitumor activity against HCT116 cell accompanied with increased induction of cleaved PARP and accelerated cell nucleic apoptosis and cycle arrest at S and G2/M phases exhibiting several typical characteristics, cell shrinkage, lost cell contact, and apoptotic body formation. Moreover, putative compounds detected at 280 nm in the healthy SML were obviously higher than those in the bleached one, probably they could be bioactive molecules responsible for competitively exclusion of pathogens, Algicola and Vibrio, from the healthy SML.

Coumarinolignans such as cleomiscosin A (CMA), cleomiscosin B (CMB), and cleomiscosin C (CMC) are secondary metabolites that were isolated from diverse plant species. Cleomiscosins (CMs) have numerous interesting biological activities, including noteworthy cytotoxicity of cancer cell lines along with hepatoprotective and assumed antioxidant activities. In this present study, the antioxidant properties of three cleomiscosins were investigated with a focus on the structure-activity relationship using thermodynamic and kinetic calculations with the M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) method. The results show that CMs, including CMA, CMB, and CMC, are weak antioxidants in apolar environments, with k overall of 7.52 × 102 to 6.28 × 104 M-1 s-1 for the HOO˙ radical scavenging reaction in the gas phase and 3.47 × 102 to 6.44 × 104 M-1 s-1 in pentyl ethanoate. Remarkably, the difference in the fusion of phenylpropanoid structure with coumarin via two ortho-hydroxyl groups (CMA and CMB) does not cause any noticeable effect on their antioxidant activity, while the presence of a methoxy substitute on the aromatic ring of phenylpropanoid units (CMC) increases the reaction rate to about 61 to 84 times faster than that of CMA. In contrast, the studied CMs exhibit a good antioxidant capacity in polar environments, with a k overall range from 4.03 × 107 to 8.66 × 107 M-1 s-1, 102-103 times faster than that of Trolox, equal to that of ascorbic acid and resveratrol. The angular fusion of the phenylpropanoid and coumarin structures, as well as the methoxy substitution on the aromatic ring of the phenylpropanoid unit of the studied CMs, do not have any considerable effect on their antioxidant activity under the studied conditions.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common malignant tumors of the male urinary system, and its incidence and mortality rates have been increasing worldwide. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) represents stromal and epithelial cell proliferation in the prostate in elderly males. Abnormal activation of inflammation-related signalling molecules, such as toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT) has been linked to the initiation and progression of various human diseases including PCa and BPH. Cylindromatosis (CYLD) gene alterations are associated with PCa progression. In this study, the contribution of CYLD, JAK2, and TLR4 gene variants to PCa and BPH risks and their associations with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, immunophenotype, and clinical features in Vietnamese men were determined. METHODS: A total of 102 patients with PCa, 65 with BPH, and 114 healthy controls were enrolled. The immunophenotype was analyzed by flow cytometry, cytokine secretion by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and gene variants by DNA sequencing. RESULTS: Lower levels of transforming growth factor ß (TGF-ß) and higher numbers of CD13+CD117- and CD56+CD25+ cells were observed in the PCa group than in the BPH group. Genetic analysis of the CYLD gene identified five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), of which c.2351-47 C>T, c.2351-46A>T, and rs1971432171 T>G had significantly higher frequencies in PCa patients than in the control and BPH groups. Sequencing of the TLR4 gene revealed five nucleotide changes, in which the rs2149356 SNP showed an increased risk for both PCa and BPH and the c.331-206 SNP had a reduced risk for PCa. Importantly, the expansion of activated natural killer (NK) cells and higher levels of PSA were found in PCa patients carrying the CT genotype of the CYLD c.2351-47 compared to those with the wild-type genotype. CONCLUSION: Activation of NK cells in CYLD-sensitive PCa patients was associated with serum PSA release and the CYLD c.2351-47 variant may be a significant risk factor for prostatitis in PCa patients.

BACKGROUND: Fenestrated endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (FEVAR) has been widely applied for the treatment of pararenal (PAA) and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAA). If custom-made devices or off-the-shelf devices are not available, physician-modified endografts (PMEGs) are an alternative device option. Several different endograft platforms have been used for PMEG; however, minimal data exists on utilizing the Terumo TREO abdominal stent graft system in this setting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate our single-center experience treating PAA and TAAA, with a physician-modified FEVAR, using the Terumo TREO platform. METHODS: A prospective database of consecutive patients with PAA and TAAA treated at a single center, with a FEVAR, utilizing a PMEG device between March 2021 and September 2023 was queried for those having a Terumo TREO device implanted. The demographics, operative details, and postoperative complications were analyzed. The rates of technical success, type I or III endoleak, branch vessel status, reintervention, and 2-year survival were also assessed. RESULTS: Of the 153 patients who underwent FEVAR with a PMEG device during the study period, 100 had repair using a Terumo TREO stent graft. The mean age of the cohort was 73.7 ± 7.0 years with the majority suffering from hypertension (n = 94, 94%), coronary artery disease (n = 51, 51%), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (n = 40, 40%). Thirty-four patients (34%) had a prior failed EVAR device in place. The mean aneurysm size was 66.0 ± 13.7 mm, with 58 (50%) patients classified as PAA and 30 (30%) patients as an extent IV TAAA. Six (6%) patients presented with symptomatic/ruptured aneurysms. The average number of target arteries incorporated per patient was 3.8 ± 0.6. The overall technical success was 99%, procedure time was 218 ± 116 min, contrast volume was 82 ± 21 mL, and cumulative air kerma was 3,054 ± 1,560 mGy. Postoperative complications were present in 20 patients (20%), and 2 patients (2%) died within 30 days. Rates of type I or III endoleak, branch vessel stenosis or occlusion, and reintervention were 2%, 1%, and 7%, respectively. The two-year overall survival was 87%. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of PAA and the extent IV TAAA using a physician-modified fenestrated Terumo TREO endograft is safe and effective. This large, early experience using the Terumo TREO platform supports preferential use of this device in this setting due to the device design and low likelihood of type I or III endoleak.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gallbladder volvulus is a rare surgical disease with clinical manifestations similar to acute acalculous cholecystitis. Diagnosing gallbladder volvulus is critical as delayed surgical intervention in gallbladder volvulus is associated with high morbidity and mortality. CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old male patient presented to our outpatient department for right upper quadrant pain of one-month duration. Taking into consideration the patient's clinical symptoms, laboratory results, and imaging findings, we diagnosed the patient with acute acalculous cholecystitis and started intravenous antibiotics. After 3 days, the clinical progress was unfavorable, laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed, and the final diagnosis of gallbladder was done intraoperatively. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on the second day after surgery. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: The cause of gallbladder volvulus may be related to abnormal embryological development, resulting in a long mesentery gallbladder and consequently leading to a floating gallbladder. Patients with gallbladder volvulus often do not exhibit specific signs, and the symptoms typically resemble those of acute acalculous cholecystitis. Once gallbladder volvulus is diagnosed, the surgical intervention must be conducted immediately. CONCLUSION: Gallbladder volvulus is a relatively rare and challenging condition to diagnose. It should be considered in cases of acute acalculous cholecystitis, especially in elderly, thin patients who do not respond to antibiotic treatment. Cholecystectomy is the definitive treatment for gallbladder volvulus. In particular, laparoscopic surgery should be chosen initially.

Purpose Understanding the relevant risk factors for patellar instability and the clinical and radiographic tests necessary to determine optimal treatment. This case series intends to evaluate arthroscopic indications in the treatment of patellar instability in children. Methods From 2013 to 2021, 33 patients (seven to 16 years of age) with 35 knees sustaining first-time dislocation with loose bodies, recurrent dislocation or subluxation, and habitual dislocation were arthroscopically operated on according to the flow chart. Periods of follow-up were two to 10 years (avg. 5.5 years). Follow-up assessment included the recurrence, complications (joint stiffness and excessive reduction), and the final function outcomes by using the Kujala score. Results Among 35 knees, there were two (5.7%) first dislocations, 30 (85.7%) recurrent dislocations, and three (8.6%) habitual dislocations, lateral release 27/35 (77.1%), medial reefing 23/35 (65.7%), reconstruction of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) 12/35 (34.3%). The major complication was a knee of extensive stiffness after medial reefing and lateral release. Recurrence was in 4/35 (11.4%) of knees, not correlated to lateral release (p=0.21), medial reefing, or reconstruction of MPFL (p=0.07); in about 23 knees of medial reefing, recurrence was significantly correlated to number of knots (p=0.045). The final functional results according to Kujala were 88-100 (avg. 95.5). Conclusions This study showed the role of arthroscopy in both medial reefing and reconstruction of MPFL in children by low recurrence rate and high Kujala score at final follow-up. There was no significant correlation between recurrence and the procedures as arthroscopic indications counted on the flow chart.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is a significant health concern. Surgery remains a critical component of the multimodal treatment strategy. The laparoscopic sphincter-preserving total mesorectal excision (TME) is increasingly utilized and effective, offering enhanced quality of life for patients compared to previous traditional methods. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine the rate of complications and the related factors associated with complications following laparoscopic sphincter-preserving total mesorectal excision for low rectal cancer. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City from March 2022 to March 2023. It included patients aged 18 years and older diagnosed with low rectal cancer who underwent laparoscopic sphincter-preserving total mesorectal excision. Data on patient demographics, surgical details, and postoperative complications were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Follow-ups were conducted up to six months after surgery. RESULTS: Of the 83 patients included, the postoperative complications rate was 14.5%. The complications observed included surgical wound infections (five cases), anastomotic leaks (five cases, including three recto-vaginal fistulas and two pelvic abscesses), urinary retention (one case), and pneumonia (one case). A significant finding was the higher rate of distant metastases in patients with complications compared to those without (p=0.033). CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic sphincter-preserving total mesorectal excision for low rectal cancer is safe and effective, with a high success rate and low complication rate during or after surgery. Anastomotic leakage remains the most significant complication. Despite advancements in surgery, modern suturing tools, and preoperative patient optimization, complications are avoidable. Therefore, understanding the related factors and implementing preventive interventions is crucial.

BACKGROUND: A 2023 Cochrane review showed no difference in bleeding/wound infection complications, short-term mortality and aneurysm exclusion between the percutaneous and cut-down approach for femoral access in endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR). In contrast, single-center studies have shown bilateral cutdown resulting in higher readmission rates due to higher rates of groin wound infections. Whether 30-day readmission rates vary by type of access during EVAR procedures is unknown. The goal of this study was to ascertain which femoral access approach for EVAR is associated with the lowest risk of 30-day readmission. METHODS: The Targeted Vascular Module from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program was queried to identify patients undergoing EVAR for aortic disease from 2012-2021. All ruptures and other emergency cases were excluded. Cohorts were divided into bilateral cutdown, unilateral cutdown, failed percutaneous attempt converted to open and successful percutaneous access. The primary 30-day outcomes were unplanned readmission and wound complications. Univariate analyses were performed using the Fisher's exact test, Chi-Square test and the Student's t-test. Multivariable analysis was performed using logistic regression. RESULTS: From 2012 to 2021, 14,002 patients met study criteria. Most (7,395 [53%]) underwent completely percutaneous access, 5,616 (40%) underwent bilateral cutdown, 849 (6%) underwent unilateral cutdown, and 146 (1%) had a failed percutaneous access which was converted to open. Unplanned readmissions by access strategy included 7.6% for bilateral cutdown, 7.3% for unilateral cutdown, 7.8% for attempted percutaneous converted to cutdown, and 5.7% for completely percutaneous access (P < 0.001, Figure 1). After multivariable analysis, unplanned readmissions compared to percutaneous access yielded: percutaneous converted to cutdown adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 1.38, 95% CI [0.76-2.53], P = 0.29; unilateral cutdown AOR: 1.18, 95% CI [0.92-1.51], P = 0.20; bilateral cutdown AOR: 1.26, 95% CI [1.09-1.43], P = 0.001. Bilateral cutdown was also associated with higher wound complications compared to percutaneous access (AOR: 4.41, CI [2.86-6.79], P < 0.001), as was unilateral cutdown (AOR: 3.04, CI [1.46-6.32], P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Patients undergoing cutdown for EVAR are at higher risk for 30-day readmission compared to completely percutaneous access. If patient anatomy allows for percutaneous EVAR, this access option should be prioritized.

This first study investigated the presence of dioxins and furans in river sediments around a craft village in Vietnam, focusing on Secondary Steel Recycling. Sediment samples were collected from various locations along the riverbed near the Da Hoi Secondary Steel Recycling village in Bac Ninh province. The analysis was conducted using a HRGC/HRMS-DFS device, detecting a total of 17 dioxin/furan isomers in all samples, with an average total concentration of 288.86 ng/kg d.w. The concentrations of dioxin/furan congeners showed minimal variation among sediment samples, ranging from 253.9 to 344.2 ng/kg d.w. The predominant compounds in the dioxin group were OCDD, while in the furan group, they were 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF and OCDF. The chlorine content in the molecule appeared to be closely related to the concentration of dioxins and their percentage distribution. However, the levels of furan isomers did not vary significantly. The distribution of these compounds was not dependent on the flow direction, as they were mainly found in solid waste and are not water-soluble. Although the hepta and octa congeners had high concentrations, when converted to TEQ values, the tetra and penta groups (for dioxins) and the penta and hexa groups (for furans) contributed more to toxicity. Furthermore, the source of dioxins in sediments at Da Hoi does not only originate from steel recycling production activities but also from other combustion sites. The average total toxicity was 10.92 ng TEQ/kg d.w, ranging from 4.99 to 17.88 ng TEQ/kg d.w, which did not exceed the threshold specified in QCVN 43:2017/BTNMT, the National Technical Regulation on Sediment Quality. Nonetheless, these levels are still concerning. The presence of these toxic substances not only impacts aquatic organisms in the sampled water environment but also poses potential health risks to residents living nearby.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the significance of adopting healthy lifestyles to mitigate the risk of severe outcomes and long-term consequences. OBJECTIVE: This study focuses on assessing the prevalence and clustering of 5 unhealthy lifestyle behaviors among Vietnamese adults after recovering from COVID-19, with a specific emphasis on sex differences. METHODS: The cross-sectional data of 5890 survivors of COVID-19 in Vietnam were analyzed from December 2021 to October 2022. To examine the sex differences in 5 unhealthy lifestyle behaviors (smoking, drinking, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and sedentary behavior), the percentages were plotted along with their corresponding 95% CI for each behavior. Latent class analysis was used to identify 2 distinct classes of individuals based on the clustering of these behaviors: the "less unhealthy" group and the "more unhealthy" group. We examined the sociodemographic characteristics associated with each identified class and used logistic regression to investigate the factors related to the "more unhealthy" group. RESULTS: The majority of individuals (male participants: 2432/2447, 99.4% and female participants: 3411/3443, 99.1%) exhibited at least 1 unhealthy behavior, with male participants being more susceptible to multiple unhealthy behaviors. The male-to-female ratio for having a single behavior was 1.003, but it escalated to 25 for individuals displaying all 5 behaviors. Male participants demonstrated a higher prevalence of combining alcohol intake with sedentary behavior (949/2447, 38.8%) or an unhealthy diet (861/2447, 35.2%), whereas female participants tended to exhibit physical inactivity combined with sedentary behavior (1305/3443, 37.9%) or an unhealthy diet (1260/3443, 36.6%). Married male participants had increased odds of falling into the "more unhealthy" group compared to their single counterparts (odds ratio [OR] 1.45, 95% CI 1.14-1.85), while female participants exhibited lower odds (OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.51-0.83). Female participants who are underweight showed a higher likelihood of belonging to the "more unhealthy" group (OR 1.11, 95% CI 0.89-1.39), but this was not observed among male participants (OR 0.6, 95% CI 0.41-0.89). In both sexes, older age, dependent employment, high education, and obesity were associated with higher odds of being in the "more unhealthy" group. CONCLUSIONS: The study identified notable sex differences in unhealthy lifestyle behaviors among survivors of COVID-19. Male survivors are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors compared to female survivors. These findings emphasize the importance of tailored public health interventions targeting sex-specific unhealthy behaviors. Specifically, addressing unhealthy habits is crucial for promoting post-COVID-19 health and well-being.

Background: The anatomical parameters of the acetabulum vary among races and geographical regions. Multislice Computed Tomography (CT) has proven to be a practical approach to assess morphological parameters of the acetabulum. The purpose of this study was to explore morphological characteristics of the acetabulum measured by CT scans in Vietnamese adults. Methods: Thirty-five consecutive patients aged 18 years and older received indications and eligibility for total hip replacement surgery. Sixty-three acetabulum were examined with multislice computed tomographic system (CT) with multiplanar reconstruction (MPR). Measured morphometric parameters of acetabulum included acetabular inclination angle (AIA), acetabular anteversion angle (AAA), acetabular angle of sharp (AAS), sagittal acetabular angle (SAA), acetabular horizontal offset (AHO), transverse acetabular ligament anteversion (TALA), transverse acetabular ligament inclination (TALI), acetabular depth (ADe), acetabular depth ratio (ADr) and acetabular diameter (ADi). Results: The mean values of acetabular diameter, femoral head diameter, AIA, AAA, AAS, SAA, TALA, TALI, AHO, ADe, ADr were 50.22±3.56 mm, 43.54±3.68 mm, 40.27±5.09 mm, 13.30±5.54 mm, 39.46±5.41 mm, 26.38±9.01 mm, 9.49±3.92 mm, 47.70±6.73 mm, 3.06±0.37 mm, 18.62±2.95 mm and 309.60±41.87 mm. Conclusion: Our initial data has showed morphological characteristics of the acetabulum in Vietnamese adults, different from the populations from other parts of world. Also, significant correlation between the orientation of the acetabulum and the transverse acetabular ligament was documented.

The use of ibrutinib, a Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor, has been associated with invasive fungal infections (IFIs). We describe a case of Apophysomyces infection associated with long-term use of ibrutinib for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia as well as perform a literature review of Mucormycosis infections in patients on ibrutinib. Our review found that the onset of IFI can occur within months to years of starting tyrosine kinase inhibitors. These reports provide a more complete picture of the risk of IFI while patients are on ibrutinib. Our case also demonstrates the utility of molecular techniques in the diagnosis of IFI, as the diagnosis was made using 28S rDNA/internal transcribed spacer PCR.

BACKGROUND: There are limited data supporting a specific duration for dual antiplatelet therapy in carotid artery stenting (CAS), and most clinical evidence is derived from studies involving coronary interventions. As a result, the appropriate duration of dual antiplatelet therapy after CAS is yet to be determined. We aimed to elucidate whether the duration of dual antiplatelet therapy played a role in the rate of carotid in-stent restenosis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent CAS at our institution over a 20-year period (1996-2016) was performed (n = 279). Patients who did not complete their follow-up duplex studies or were not discharged on clopidogrel were excluded from the study. Patients were separated into short-term (<6 weeks, n = 159) and long-term (>6 weeks, n = 112) clopidogrel users based on duration of therapy. We defined clinically significant in-stent restenosis as >50% restenosis (peak systolic velocity = 224 cm/s) in symptomatic patients and >80% restenosis (peak systolic velocity = 325 cm/s) in asymptomatic patients status-post prior CAS based on published velocity criteria. Rates of in-stent restenosis at 1-year, 2-year, and 5-year intervals were analyzed between the 2 groups using chi-squared analysis. RESULTS: Demographic information was largely similar between the 2 groups; however, short-term clopidogrel users were more likely to have a history of atrial fibrillation (9.43% vs. 1.68%, P = 0.008) and were less likely to have a history of coronary artery bypass graft (16.35% vs. 29.41%, P = 0.009), diabetes (33.34% vs. 49.58%, P = 0.006), and coronary artery disease (50.31% vs. 63.03%, P = 0.035). All patients were on long-term aspirin therapy. There was no significant difference between overall rates of in-stent restenosis between the short-term and long-term clopidogrel users (5.03% vs. 9.24%, P = 0.168) within 5 years of the index procedure. Similar results were observed when these groups were evaluated at 1-year (5.61% vs. 3%, P = 0.321), 2-year (2.02% vs. 6.59%, P = 0.072), and 5-year (2.24% vs. 3.57%, P = 0.635) follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: No statistically significant difference was observed in the rate of in-stent restenosis after CAS between short-term and long-term clopidogrel therapy. Patients in whom there is no other indication for longer duration clopidogrel therapy may be considered for shorter duration course of dual antiplatelet therapy following CAS.

BACKGROUND: Hyperactive coagulation might cause dangerous complications such as portal vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism after mesenchymal stem/stromal cell (MSC) therapy. Tissue factor (TF), an initiator of the extrinsic coagulation pathway, has been suggested as a predictor of this process. METHODS: The expression of TF and other pro- and anticoagulant genes was analyzed in xeno- and serum-free manufactured MSCs. Furthermore, culture factors affecting its expression in MSCs were investigated. Finally, coagulation tests of fibrinogen, D-dimer, aPPTs, PTs, and TTs were measured in patient serum after umbilical cord (UC)-MSC infusions to challenge a potential connection between TF expression and MSC-induced coagulant activity.  RESULTS: Xeno- and serum-free cultured adipose tissue and UC-derived MSCs expressed the highest level of TF, followed by those from dental pulp, and the lowest expression was observed in MSCs of bone marrow origin. Environmental factors such as cell density, hypoxia, and inflammation impact TF expression, so in vitro analysis might fail to reflect their in vivo behaviors. MSCs also expressed heterogeneous levels of the coagulant factor COL1A1 and surface phosphatidylserine and anticoagulant factors TFPI and PTGIR. MSCs of diverse origins induced fibrin clots in healthy plasma that were partially suppressed by an anti-TF inhibitory monoclonal antibody. Furthermore, human umbilical vein endothelial cells exhibited coagulant activity in vitro despite their negative expression of TF and COL1A1. Patients receiving intravenous UC-MSC infusion exhibited a transient increase in D-dimer serum concentration, while this remained stable in the group with intrathecal infusion. There was no correlation between TF expression and D-dimer or other coagulation indicators. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests that TF cannot be used as a solid biomarker to predict MSC-induced hypercoagulation. Local administration, prophylactic intervention with anticoagulation drugs, and monitoring of coagulation indicators are useful to prevent thrombogenic events in patients receiving MSCs. Aim: To determine all-cause mortality rate and the predictive value of plasma ferritin and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) concentrations for mortality during the first 3 years of hemodialysis in patients with end-stage chronic renal disease (ESRD). Methods: We conducted a study on 174 ESRD patients (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate < 15 mL/min/1.73m2). The plasma TIBC level was quantified by the ELISA method in all patients at the time before hemodialysis. Based on TIBC concentration, patients were divided equally into 2 groups. Each group had 87 patients. Patients were initiated on hemodialysis, and patients who died from any cause during the first 3 years of hemodialysis were recorded. Results: The all-cause mortality rate of ESRD patients in the first 3 years of maintenance hemodialysis was 22.9%. Plasma high hs-CRP, high ferritin, and low TIBC concentrations were independent factors associated with all-cause mortality in the patients. Plasma ferritin (cut-off value = 454.2 ng/L) and TIBC (cut-off value = 39.84 µmol/L) were predictors of all-cause mortality, AUC is: 0.772; 0.723, p < 0.001. Conclusion: Plasma ferritin and TIBC were good predictors of all-cause mortality in ESRD patients during the first 3 years of hemodialysis.

Backgrounds/Aims: Liver transplantation (LT) provides a favorable outcome for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and was launched in Vietnam in 2004. In this study, we evaluated the short-term and long-term outcomes of LT and its risk factors. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed HCC patients who underwent LT at Viet Duc University hospital, Vietnam, from 01/2012-03/2022. The following data were gathered: demographics, virus infection, tumor characteristics, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level, Child-Pugh and MELD scores, selection criteria, type of LT, complications, 30-day mortality, and disease-free and overall survival (DFS and OS). Results: Fifty four patients were included, the mean age was 55.39 ± 8.46 years. Nearly 90% had hepatitis B virus-related HCC. The median (interquartile range) AFP level was 16.2 (88.7) ng/mL. The average MELD score was 10.57 ± 5.95; the rate of Child-Pugh A and B were 70.4% and 18.5%, respectively. Nearly 40% of the patients were within Milan criteria, brain-dead donor was 83.3%. Hepatic and portal vein thrombosis occurred in 0% and 1.9%, respectively; hepatic artery thrombosis 1.9%, biliary leakage 5.6%, and postoperative hemorrhage 3.7%. Ninety-day mortality was 5.6%. Five-year DFS and OS were 79.3% and 81.4%, respectively. MELD score and Child-Pugh score were predictive factors for DFS and OS (p < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, Child-Pugh score was the only significant factor (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In Vietnam, LT is an effective therapy for HCC with an acceptable complication rate, mortality rate, and good survival outcomes, and should be further encouraged.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to analyze the compositions of urinary stones and investigate their distributions in different ages, genders, seasons, and clinical features of Northern Vietnamese patients. METHODS: A total of 231 patients with urinary stones from Northern Vietnam were collected and analyzed composition from 1/2021-12/2022. For all patients, age, sex, stone location, stone side, urine pH, and hospitalized date (month) were collected. RESULTS: Kidney stones are more frequently found in men than women with the male: female urinary stones ratio in this study being 1.96:1. The highest stone prevalence appeared between 60 and 69 years old. The most common stone composition was calcium oxalate, followed by calcium phosphate, uric acid, struvite, and cysteine. Mix stones of CaOx and CaP were more prevalent than pure stones. Males submitted more CaOx, CaP, and UA stones, whereas females were susceptible to infectious stones. Stones were more frequently found on the left side of the upper urinary tract (51.9%) than on the right side (27.3%) and lower urinary tract (7.8%). Cultural tendency leads to a smaller number of stones during the Lunar new year (February), and Ghost month (August).

In this clinical case, we describe the cardio-oncological history and the complexity of the management of a patient presenting a breast cancer diasgnosed during pregnancy followed by a postpartum cardiomyopathy. A multidisciplinary approach is mandatory.


Dans ce cas clinique, nous décrivons l'histoire cardio-oncologique et la complexité de prise en charge d'une patiente présentant un cancer mammaire découvert lors d'une grossesse, puis, une cardiomyopathie du post-partum. Une approche multidisciplinaire s'avère indispensable.

Background Rectal resection with total mesorectal excision is a difficult surgery with potential risks of complications. This study aims to assess the quality of life (QoL) of patients with low rectal cancer who have bowel function disorders equivalent to major low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) and its risk factors before treatment. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 83 patients diagnosed with low rectal cancer who had not been treated. Quality of life was assessed by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer's (EORTC) 30-Item Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) and the LARS scale. Results Fiffty-five (66.3%) patients had moderate/major low anterior resection syndrome, of which 34 (41%) patients had major low anterior resection syndrome. The study implicated that old age, smoking, and alcohol consumption were risk factors associated with high scores on the scale for LARS (p<0.05). Patients with low rectal cancer had low overall QoL score. In the symptom area of increased financial hardship scores, factors that adversely affected the poor quality of life in patients with low rectal cancer were fatigue and bowel dysfunction with p<0.05. Conclusion The percentage of rectal cancer patients with low anterior resection syndrome was high, and the associated risk factors were old age, smoking, and drinking alcohol. Before treatment, the physical and mental health of patients with low rectal cancer with major low anterior resection syndrome was very poor.
