RESUMO

Mechanical forces during machine milking of dairy cows evoke circulatory impairment of the teat tissue that may affect the teats' defense mechanisms against mastitis pathogens. Ample research describes dimensional changes of different teat traits after machine milking, whereas reports that describe changes in blood circulation of dairy cows' teats are limited. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (1) describe changes in teat blood circulation that occur after pre-milking teat stimulation and machine milking and (2) study the effect of 2 different milking liners on machine milking-induced changes in teat blood flow. In a randomized trial, Holstein dairy cows were stratified by parity, stage of lactation, and average daily milk yield during the previous week, and allocated to 1 of 2 treatment groups. Treatment consisted of 1 milking observation with either a round or multisided concave milking liner. Teat scans were taken of the left front and the right hind teats using power Doppler ultrasonography. Imaging occurred before pre-milking udder preparation (T1), after completion of pre-milking udder preparation but before milking-unit attachment (T2), and immediately after unit detachment (T3). Perfusion intensity measurements from teat scans were performed with a commercially available software program. Data from 109 cows were analyzed. A general linear mixed model showed differences in perfusion intensity between time points. Least squares means (95% confidence intervals) for T1, T2, and T3, respectively, were 0.035% (0.026-0.047), 0.124% (0.093-0.164), and 0.095% (0.073-0.124). Conversely, no statistically significant differences between treatment groups were observed. We conclude that teat blood circulation is subjected to several influences, including inherent circulatory regulation mechanisms, as well as extrinsic factors such as machine milking. Future research is warranted to decipher the magnitude of their influence and to further our understanding of how these changes relate to the susceptibility to intramammary infection and milking performance.

Ample research has described the assessment of dimensional changes for different teat traits, whereas diagnostic techniques to reliably assess blood circulation in teats of dairy cows are limited. Here, we describe the development and evaluation of a scanning technique to quantify blood flow in teats of dairy cows using power Doppler ultrasonography. In 2 consecutive trials, 384 teat scans [trial 1, n = 256 (sagittal plane, n = 128; transverse plane, n = 128); trial 2, n = 128 (transverse plane)] from 16 cows were obtained by the same 2 operators. Perfusion intensity from single images (trial 1) and video images (trial 2) were assessed using a commercially available software program. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and concordance correlation coefficients (CCC) were used to assess interoperator reproducibility (agreement between measurements performed by different operators) and intraoperator repeatability (agreement between measurements performed by the same operator). In trial 1, interoperator ICC and CCC indicated poor agreement (ICC ≤0.26, CCC ≤0.26). Intraoperator ICC and CCC demonstrated poor agreement between duplicate measurements within operators (ICC ≤0.19, CCC ≤0.19). Modifications after trial 1 included (1) a different ultrasound device, (2) analysis of video clips rather than single images, (3) restriction to 1 sectional plane (i.e., transverse), and (4) a scanning sequence such that repeated scans within operators were measured one after another. Through these modifications, intraoperator repeatability in trial 2 yielded fair to good agreement, with intraoperator ICC and CCC over both operators ranging from 0.44 to 0.70 and from 0.57 to 0.69, respectively, whereas interoperator ICC and CCC showed poor agreement (ICC = 0.35, CCC = 0.34). We conclude that repeatable measurements of blood perfusion intensity of teats in dairy cows can be attained with power Doppler ultrasonography. Power Doppler ultrasonography is a suitable tool to quantify slow flow in small vessels and may be an acceptable diagnostic technique to assess changes in blood circulation that result from machine milking in teats of dairy cows, although further research is necessary to validate this hypothesis.

Changes in teat canal diameter as induced by machine milking are thought to be related to teat canal penetrability and susceptibility to new intramammary infections. The objective of this study was to describe the effects of machine milking on teat canal dimensions as assessed by ultrasonography and to evaluate postmilking changes of teat canal dimensions throughout an 8-h milking interval. Ultrasonographic images were taken of the left front and right hind teats of 80 Holstein cows milked 3 times per day. Imaging occurred before attachment of the milking unit after completion of premilking udder preparation (t-1), immediately after removal of the milking unit (t0), and then every hour after milking until 8 h had elapsed (t1 to t8). Teat canal length and teat canal diameter (at the proximal, middle, and distal regions) were measured. General linear mixed model analysis indicated differences in the relative change of teat canal length (compared with t-1) with least squares means (LSM) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of 11.1% (8.7-13.4%) after machine milking (t0). Teat canal length decreased throughout the 8-h milking interval but remained elevated relative to t-1. Teat canal diameter at the proximal and middle regions increased near the end of the milking interval, whereas that at the distal region did not change meaningfully during the 8 h of observation. Our findings suggest that the teat canal and its surrounding tissue is in a state of near-constant remodeling in cows milked 3 times daily. Future work is warranted to study the association between ultrasonographically assessed changes of teat canal dimensions after machine milking and teat canal penetrability to mastitis-causing pathogens.

Mechanical forces during machine milking induce changes in teat condition which can be differentiated into short-term and long-term changes. Machine milking-induced short-term changes in teat condition (STC) are defined as tissue responses to a single milking and have been associated with the risk of new intramammary infection. Albeit, their association with teat characteristics, such as teat-end shape, has not been investigated by rigorous methods. The primary objective was to determine the association of STC, as measured by ultrasonography, with teat-end shape. The second objective was to describe possible differences in the recovery time of teat tissue after machine milking among teats with different teat-end shapes. Holstein cows (n=128) were enrolled in an observational study, housed in free-stall pens with sand bedding and milked three times a day. Ultrasonography of the left front and right hind teat was performed after teat preparation before milking (t-1), immediately after milking (t 0) and 1, 3, 5 and 7 h after milking (t 1, t 3, t 5, t 7). The teat tissue parameters measured from ultrasound scans were teat canal length, teat-end diameter, teat-end diameter at the midpoint between the distal and proximal end of the teat canal, teat wall thickness, and teat cistern width. Teat-end shape was assessed visually and classified into three categories: pointed, flat and round. Multivariable linear regression analyses showed differences in the relative change of teat tissue parameters (compared with t-1) at t 0 among teats with different teat-end shapes, with most parameters showing the largest change for round teats. The premilking values were reached (recovery time) after 7 h in teats with a pointed teat-end shape, whereas recovery time was greater than 7 h in teats with flat and round teat-end shapes. Under the same liner and milking machine conditions, teats with a round teat-end shape had the most severe short-term changes. The results of this observational study indicated that teat-end shape may be one of the factors that contribute to the severity of STC.

The objective of our study was to characterize the diagnostic performance of cytology for assessing hepatic lipid content (HLC) in dairy cows by comparing microscopic evaluation of lipid vacuolation in touch imprint slide preparations of liver biopsies with quantitative measurement of triglyceride concentration ([TG]; mg/mg of wet weight) in paired biopsy samples. Our study also sought to compare the diagnostic performance of liver cytology, plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentration ([NEFA]), and plasma ß-hydroxybutyrate concentration ([BHB]) derived from a measurement performed on whole blood, for assessing HLC. Chemical extraction of TG from liver tissue remains the gold standard for quantifying HLC, largely because available blood tests, although useful for detecting some types of pathology, such as increased lipid mobilization, ketosis, or hepatocellular injury, are nonspecific as to etiology. Veterinary practitioners can sample bovine liver for cytological evaluation in a fast, minimally invasive, and inexpensive manner. Thus, if highly predictive of HLC, cytology would be a practical diagnostic tool for dairy veterinarians. In our study, liver biopsy samples from Holstein cows (219 samples from 105 cows: 52 from cows 2 to 20 d prepartum, 105 from cows 0 to 10 d in milk, 62 from cows 18 to 25 d in milk) were used to prepare cytology slides and to quantify [TG] using the Folch extraction method followed by the Hantzch condensation reaction and spectrophotometric measurement. An ordinal scale (0-4) based on amount of hepatocellular cytoplasm occupied by discrete clear vacuoles was used by 3 blinded, independent observers to rank HLC in Wright-Giemsa-stained slides. Interobserver agreement in cytology scoring was good. Corresponding plasma [NEFA] and [BHB] measurements were available for 187 and 195 of the 219 samples, respectively. Liver [TG] correlated more strongly with cytology score than with NEFA or BHB, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that cytology had better diagnostic performance than either NEFA or BHB for correctly categorizing [TG] at thresholds of 5, 10, and 15%. Hepatic lipidosis in high-producing dairy cows is of major clinical and economic importance, and this study demonstrates that cytology is an accurate means of assessing HLC. Additional work is indicated to evaluate the diagnostic utility of liver cytology.

The objectives were to (1) develop a standard operating procedure (SOP) for ultrasound-based measurements of teat canal dimensions and (2) determine the precision of ultrasound-based measurements of teat canal dimensions in dairy cows. Teat scans (n = 64) of the right hind and left front teats from 16 cows were obtained with a portable ultrasound device before and after machine milking. Teat dimensions measured were teat canal length (TCL), teat canal diameter at the proximal end of the teat canal (TCDPROX), teat canal diameter at the midpoint between the proximal and distal ends of the teat canal (TCDMID), teat canal diameter at the distal end of the teat canal (TCDDIS), teat end diameter at the midpoint between the proximal and distal ends of the teat canal (TMD), and teat canal cross-sectional area (TCLAREA). An SOP was developed, reviewed, and modified by 3 operators. Measurements were performed by the same 3 operators using an open source software program. To assess the effect of implemented modifications and the precision of ultrasound-based measurements, concordance correlation coefficients (CCC) were calculated to determine interoperator reproducibility and intraoperator repeatability. Through modifications in the SOP, interoperator CCC increased from 0.45 to 0.86 for TCL, from 0.14 to 0.66 for TCDPROX, from 0.24 to 0.66 for TCDMID, from 0.06 to 0.56 for TCDDIS, from 0.64 to 0.91 for TMD, and from 0.17 to 0.64 for TCLAREA. Intraoperator CCC over all operators were 0.91 for TCL, 0.73 for TCDPROX, 0.80 for TCDMID, 0.69 for TCDDIS, 0.94 for TMD, and 0.75 for TCLAREA. Our results indicate that measurements of teat canal dimensions can be conducted with satisfactory precision when following an SOP. Development and strict implementation of an SOP has the potential to decrease inadvertent variability of ultrasound-based measurements among operators for ultrasonographic assessment of teat dimensions.

Adipose tissue mobilization is a hallmark of the transition period in dairy cows. Cows overfed energy during the dry period have higher concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) compared with cows fed a controlled-energy diet prepartum. The reason for an increase in blood NEFA concentrations at the level of adipose tissue in cows overfed energy has not been fully elucidated. One hypothesis is that cows with high BHB concentrations suffer from adipose tissue-specific insulin resistance, leading to higher rates of adipose tissue mobilization in the postpartum period. To test this hypothesis, subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies of cows overfed energy in excess of predicted requirements by 50% in the dry period, and that had high concentrations of blood BHB postpartum (group H; n=12), were used. Findings were compared with results of biopsies from cows fed a controlled-energy diet and with low BHB concentrations postpartum (group C; n=12) to create the biggest contrast in BHB concentrations. Subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies were obtained before and 60 min after an intravenous glucose challenge (0.25 g/kg of glucose) at 28 and 10 d before expected calving as well as on d 4 and 21 postpartum. Phosphorylation of protein kinase B, extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and hormone-sensitive lipase was determined before and after glucose infusion by Western blot. Western blot was also used to assess the baseline protein abundance of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma and insulin receptor ß-subunit. In addition, gene expression of fatty acid synthase, adiponectin, monocyte chemoattractant protein 1, and tumor necrosis factor α was determined by real-time quantitative reverse-transcription PCR. Backfat thickness was determined in the thurl area by ultrasonography. Cows in group H showed a greater degree of lipogenesis prepartum, but no differences were found in lipolytic enzyme activity postpartum compared with cows in group C. Baseline plasma insulin concentrations were decreased and serum NEFA concentrations increased postpartum in group H. Insulin signaling through protein kinase B, quantity of insulin receptor, markers of inflammation, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma in adipose tissue were not different between the groups, but expression of adiponectin was increased in adipose tissue of cows in group H during the immediate peripartum period. In conclusion, differences in serum concentrations of NEFA between cows overfed energy prepartum and high blood concentrations of BHB are likely due to greater negative energy balance postpartum reflected in lower circulating concentrations of glucose and insulin and an increase in the total amount of mobilized adipose tissue mass rather than due to changes in adipose tissue insulin signaling.

During periods of negative energy balance, mobilization of muscle is a physiologic process providing energy and amino acids. This is important in transition dairy cows experiencing negative energy and protein balance postpartum. Overconsumption of energy during late pregnancy affects resting glucose and insulin concentrations peripartum and increases the risk for hyperketonemia postpartum, but the effects on muscle tissue are not fully understood. Skeletal muscle accounts for the majority of insulin-dependent glucose utilization in ruminants. Our objective was to study peripartal skeletal muscle insulin signaling as well as muscle accretion and atrophy in cows with excess energy consumption prepartum. Skeletal muscle biopsies were obtained 28 and 10 days prepartum, as well as 4 and 21 days postpartum from 24 Holstein cows. Biopsies were taken immediately before and 60 min after intravenous glucose challenge causing endogenous release of insulin. Gene expression of IGF-1, myostatin, and atrogin-1, as well as immunoblot analysis of atrogin-1, muRF1, ubiquitinated proteins, LC3, and phosphorylation of AKT, ERK and mTORC1 substrate 4EBP1 was performed. Excess energy consumption in late pregnancy did not lead to changes in insulin-dependent molecular regulation of muscle accretion or atrophy compared with the controlled energy group. In both groups, phosphorylation of AKT and mTORC1 substrate was significantly decreased postpartum whereas proteasome activity and macroautopagy were upregulated. This study showed that in addition to the proteasome pathway of muscle atrophy, macroautophagy is upregulated in postpartum negative energy and protein balance regardless of dietary energy strategy prepartum and was higher in cows overfed energy throughout the study period.

Diarrhea is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal calves. Several enteropathogens are associated with diarrhea in young calves, with Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infection being the most common type of colibacillosis. The rise of antibiotic resistance in a number of medically important bacterial pathogens has revived interest in the use of bacteriophages as anti-bacterial therapeutic agents. Here we describe the results of a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded study designed to evaluate the effect of an oral bacteriophage cocktail on fecal E. coli colony-forming units (CFU). Ten calves were enrolled in the study to either the bacteriophage group or the placebo group for 22 feedings. Calves in the bacteriophage treatment group (n = 6) received a total of 106 plaque-forming units (PFU) (volume = 5 ml) of each of four bacteriophages while the placebo group (n = 4) received only phosphate-buffered saline (5 ml). Fresh fecal samples and blood samples were collected daily from each calf and analyzed for bacterial count and presence of bacteriophage. E. coli-infecting phages were recovered from all phage-treated calves at concentrations of 10² to 10³ PFU per gram of rectal contents, but none was detected in serum. Phage treatment caused a reduction in fecal E. coli when compared to the control group: the mean log CFU for the placebo-treated group was 9.25 (SE = 0.42) versus 9.11 (SE = 0.34) for the phage-treated group, but the difference was not statistically significant.

BACKGROUND: Pentoxifylline (PTX) possesses a number of vasomotor, immunomodulatory, and hemorheologic properties. Based upon the hypothesis that equine laminitis and navicular disease result from microthrombosis, the inhibitory effects of PTX on inflammatory cytokines, and its inhibitory effects on human platelet aggregation, PTX has been widely used to treat equine endotoxemia, navicular disease, and laminitis. Despite this, the effects of PTX on equine platelet aggregation have not been investigated previously. HYPOTHESIS: PTX decreases platelet aggregation in equine whole blood at concentrations approximating those achieved in horses given clinically relevant doses of PTX. ANIMALS: Seven healthy adult horses from a research herd. METHODS: Whole blood impedance aggregometry using whole equine blood incubated with varying concentrations of PTX. Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and collagen were used to initiate aggregation. RESULTS: The onset time of collagen-induced equine platelet aggregation was significantly shortened by PTX. The maximum slope of resistance change (dR/dt) and total resistance change of collagen-induced platelet aggregation were unaffected by PTX. No effects of PTX on ADP-induced onset time of aggregation, dR/dt, or total resistance change were observed. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Our hypothesis is not supported by the results. PTX hastens the onset of collagen-induced platelet aggregation in equine whole blood, but has no effect on the rate of collagen-induced aggregation. PTX does not affect ADP-dependent equine platelet aggregation. Given these findings, PTX may not be a reasonable therapeutic option to decrease platelet aggregation in horses.

BACKGROUND: Lymphosarcoma in adult cattle has multiple manifestations. OBJECTIVE: To describe the signalment, clinical complaints, and tumor location, and to evaluate utility of diagnostic tests in cattle with lymphosarcoma. ANIMALS: Adult cattle admitted to Cornell University between January 1980 and December 2008 with a definitive diagnosis of lymphosarcoma. METHODS: Retrospective case study was conducted with a search of all medical records at Cornell University for cattle diagnosed with lymphosarcoma. Categorical data were analyzed with a Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. Sensitivities of diagnostic tests were calculated. RESULTS: There were 106 cows and 6 bulls (median age 5 years) examined for anorexia (34%), weight loss (16%), and fever (14%). The sensitivities of antemortem diagnostic tests performed were peripheral lymph node (PLN) wedge biopsy, 100%; surgical exploration and biopsy, 100%; pleurocentesis, 80%; pericardiocentesis, 67%; PLN fine-needle aspirate, 41%; abdominocentesis, 33%; and cerebral spinal fluid tap, 19%. Median peripheral blood lymphocyte count was 4,900 cells/muL, 10% of cattle were leukemic and 25% had lymphocytosis according to the Bendixen Key. The most frequently identified tumor locations (% of cattle) were the heart (66%), abomasum (61%), uterus (38%), kidney (32%), and epidural space (26%). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Predilection sites were similar to previously reports but we found a higher incidence of renal tumors and lower incidence of retrobulbar tumors. Knowledge of common clinical presentations, organ involvement, and sensitivities of diagnostic tests will aid informed decisions on the most appropriate tests and interpretation of their results in clinical cases of bovine lymphosarcoma.

The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effects of digit amputation and arthrodesis surgery performed in the field on culling and milk production during the early postsurgical period. Cows from 3 commercial dairy farms in New York State were recruited for the study. A total of 49 cows on which digit amputation (AMP) was performed were matched with 68 controls (MC-AMP), and 17 cows on which arthrodesis surgery (ARTHRO) was performed were matched with 20 controls (MC-ARTHRO) according to lactation, DIM, and lactation at the time of surgery. Performance was not directly comparable between the AMP and ARTHRO groups because cows were not randomly assigned to the 2 treatment groups. Therefore, each surgical group was evaluated relative to its respective matched control group. Cows with AMP had a significantly lower estimated median survival of 68 d (95% confidence interval; lower = 35 d, upper = 156 d) compared with 585 d (95% confidence interval; lower = 469 d, upper = 699 d) for the MC-AMP group. Total milk production for the first 60 d postsurgery was significantly lower for the AMP (1,533 +/- SE = 101 kg) group compared with the MC-AMP (2,121 +/- 101 kg) group and for the ARTHRO (1,883 +/- 86 kg) group compared with the MC-ARTHRO (2,250 +/- 88 kg) group. Septic arthritis of the distal interphalangeal joint was the most common condition treated by surgery, accounting for 70.5% of ARTHRO cases and 73.5% for AMP. Toe necrosis accounted for 14.3% of AMP cases, and retroarticular abscess made up the rest of the AMP (12.2%) cases and 29.5% of the ARTHRO cases. Results suggest that cows that had undergone ARTHRO had a lower culling rate and a faster return to production compared with those that had undergone AMP. Arthrodesis should be considered as a treatment option for deep sepsis of the bovine foot.

To determine the effect of dietary protein intake on lean body wasting in adult canines a study was undertaken to investigate the Ubiquitin Proteasome (UP) pathway and concurrent changes in lean and fat body mass of canines fed variable sources and concentrations of dietary protein. Purpose-bred, intact female canines (56) between the ages of 2 and 3 years were fed either 12 or 28% protein diet for 10 weeks. Each diet contained variable amounts of corn gluten meal and chicken protein sources in ratios of 100 : 0, 67 : 33, 33 : 67 and 0 : 100 per cent (w/w), respectively. All diets were isocaloric with calories coming from protein : fat : carbohydrate at the respective ratios of 12 : 40 : 48% for the 12% diets, and 28 : 40 : 32% for the 28% diets. Standard dual energy X-ray absorptiometry was performed to assess total body lean and fat mass at weeks 0 and 10 of the dietary trial. Muscle biopsies were also taken and processed for protein determination and standard gel electrophoresis with subsequent Western blotting for 20S proteasome and PA700 regulatory cap subunit p31. Statistical analysis revealed a moderate degree of correlation between increasing quantities of corn gluten, which is low in essential amino acids (i.e. lysine, tryptophan), and increasing loss of lean body mass over the 10-week study (R = 0.56). Furthermore, a moderate degree of correlation was observed between increasing concentrations of corn gluten protein and decreased expression of the p31 subunit of the 26S proteasome (R = 0.49). Additionally, the dogs consuming the 12% protein diets had a significant increase in fat mass regardless of the protein source. These findings suggest that lean body wasting in adult canines can be associated with the consumption of low protein diets consisting of predominantly corn gluten, which is likely due to imbalances or subclinical deficiencies of specific essential amino acids, and that low protein diets may augment accumulation of adipose tissue. Although the mechanisms remain unclear, alteration of molecular targets of skeletal muscle proteolysis, specifically involving the UP pathway occur.

The purposes of this study were to (1) prospectively establish serum IgM and IgG concentrations in normal, fit, adult horses over time and (2) determine the accuracy of serum IgM concentrations for diagnosing lymphoma. Serial IgM and IgG concentrations were measured with a radial immunodiffusion assay in 25 regularly exercised horses at 6-week intervals. Horses had serum IgM concentrations ranging from 50 to 242 mg/dL over 5 months, with 20% of horses having IgM < or = 60 mg/dL. The normal range for IgM in fit horses should be considered 103 +/- 40 mg/dL and a cut-point for an IgM deficiency, < or = 23 mg/dL. IgG concentrations ranged from 1,372 to 3,032 mg/dL. Retrospectively, medical records of adult horses (n = 103) admitted to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals for which serum IgM was measured were examined. Horses were categorized as "lymphoma negative" (n = 34) or "lymphoma positive" (n = 18). The sensitivity and specificity of a serum IgM concentration (< or = 60 mg/dL) for detecting equine lymphoma was 50 and 35%, respectively. At the new cut-point (< or = 23 mg/dL), the sensitivity was low at 28% and the specificity improved to 88%. The negative predictive values at various population prevalences indicate that a horse with a high serum IgM (> 23 mg/dL) is unlikely to have lymphoma, whereas the positive predictive value (70%) does not allow for reliable determination of lymphoma in a horse with serum IgM < or = 23 mg/dL. Therefore, serum IgM concentrations should not be used as a screening test for equine lymphoma.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the total number of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts and Giardia spp cysts shed by dairy calves during the period when they are most at risk after natural infection. ANIMALS: 478 calves naturally infected with C. parvum and 1,016 calves naturally infected with Giardia spp. PROCEDURE: Oocysts or cysts were enumerated from fecal specimens. Distribution of number of oocysts or cysts versus age was used to determine the best fitting mathematic function. Number of oocysts or cysts per gram of feces for a given duration of shedding was computed by determining the area under the curve. Total number of oocysts or cysts was calculated by taking the product of the resultant and the expected mass of feces. RESULTS: Intensity of Cparvum oocyst shedding was best described by a second-order polynomial function. Shedding increased from 4 days of age, peaked at day 12, and then decreased. An infected 6-day-old calf would produce 3.89 x 10(10) oocysts until 12 days old. Pattern of shedding of Giardia spp cysts was best described by exponential functions. Intensity of shedding increased from 4 days of age, peaked at day 14, and then decreased. An infected calf would produce 3.8 x 10(7) cysts from day 50 until day 56. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The large number of oocysts and cysts shed indicates that shedding by dairy cattle poses a risk for susceptible calves and people. Estimates reported here may be useful to aid in designing cost-effective strategies to manage this risk.
