RESUMO

Inotodiol, a lanostane-type triterpenoid, and many phytochemicals from Chaga mushrooms have been investigated for various allergic diseases. However, the anti-aging and anti-inflammatory activities of inotodiol under different types of oxidative stress and the impact of inotodiol on collagen and hyaluronan synthesis have not been sufficiently studied. Lanostane triterpenoids-rich concentrate, which contained 10% inotodiol as major (inotodiol concentrate), was prepared from Chaga and compared with pure inotodiol in terms of anti-inflammatory activities on a human keratinocyte cell line, HaCaT cells, under various stimulations such as stimulation with ultraviolet (UV) B or tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. In stimulation with TNF-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and IL-8 genes were significantly repressed by 0.44~4.0 µg/mL of pure inotodiol. UVB irradiation induced the overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, but those genes were significantly suppressed by pure inotodiol or inotodiol concentrate. Moreover, pure inotodiol/inotodiol concentrate could also modulate the synthesis of collagen and hyaluronic acid by controlling COL1A2 and HAS2/3 expression, which implies a crucial role for pure inotodiol/inotodiol concentrate in the prevention of skin aging. These results illuminate the anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects of pure inotodiol/inotodiol concentrate, and it is highly conceivable that pure inotodiol and inotodiol concentrate could be promising natural bioactive substances to be incorporated in therapeutic and beautifying applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Inotodiol has been proven to have antitumor, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antiallergic properties. This study investigated the immunomodulatory capability of inotodiol in allergic rhinitis (AR) mice. METHODS: Forty BALB/c mice were divided into four groups, 10 mice each: control (CON), AR with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) treatment (AR), inotodiol treatment (AR+Ino), and dexamethasone treatment (AR+Dex). Episodes of sneezing and nose rubbing were counted. Cytokines in nasal lavage fluid (NLF) and immunoglobulin in blood serum were measured. Nasal mucosae from each group were used for protein, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and histological analyses. Splenocytes were cultured for evaluation of cytokine production in each group. RESULTS: Symptoms of rubbing and sneezing improved in the group of AR+Ino and AR+Dex than in the AR. NLF in the AR+Ino and AR+Dex also showed a significant decrease in interleukin (IL)-5, IL-10, and IL-13 compared to the AR. In addition, the number of eosinophils, goblet cells, and mast cells were notably lower in the nasal mucosae of the AR+Ino and AR+Dex. IL-4 and IL-17A in the AR+Ino and AR+Dex groups were decreased compared to the AR. Chemokines related to mast cell degradation were also decreased in the AR+Ino and AR+Dex groups. Total immunoglobulin (Ig)E, specific IgE and ovalbumin (OVA)-specific IgG1, and histamine levels were also significantly lower in the AR+Ino and AR+Dex groups. IL-10 and IL-13 were notably increased in the splenocytes of the AR after OVA stimulation, whereas the other groups showed no change. CONCLUSION: These results indicate inotodiol can help suppress allergic responses by immunomodulation activities.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Various toxic substances can be generated from incinerators, exposing nearby residents, and epidemiological studies have shown wide variations in risk estimates for cancer risk in populations living close to incinerators. METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a literature search and systematic review were conducted to identify studies conducted on general populations exposed to environmental incinerator emissions and cancer outcomes. Meta-analysis was performed according to the cancer types for which 2 or more studies were reported. Subgroup analysis was done for sex, the exposure estimation method, the study period, and the type of outcome. RESULTS: Eleven studies were found for the qualitative review and meta-analysis. Seven studies had a case-control design, and 4 had a cohort design. The pooled effect size was not significant for breast, colorectal, liver, lung, lymphohematopoietic, stomach, bladder, central nervous system, and laryngeal cancers, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, sarcoma, leukemia, and all cancers. In the subgroup analysis, the pooled effect size of laryngeal cancer in females was 1.82 (95% confidence interval, 1.10 to 3.01), although only 2 studies were identified. CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analysis did not provide evidence of an increased risk for any cancer among populations living near waste incinerators, except for laryngeal cancer in females. However, since relatively few studies were reviewed and some cancer types showed significant increases in individual studies, this evidence needs to be updated regularly.

RESUMO

Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) comprises polyphenolic compounds, triterpenoids, polysaccharides, and sterols. Among the triterpenoid components, inotodiol has been broadly examined because of its various biological activities. The purpose of this study is to examine inotodiol from a safety point of view and to present the potential possibilities of inotodiol for medical usage. From chaga mushroom extract, crude inotodiol (INO20) and pure inotodiol (INO95) were produced. Mice were treated with either INO20 or INO95 once daily using oral administration for repeated dose toxicity evaluation. Serum biochemistry parameters were analyzed, and the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the serum was quantified. In parallel, the effect of inotodiol on food allergic symptoms was investigated. Repeated administration of inotodiol did not show any mortality or abnormalities in organs. In food allergy studies, the symptoms of diarrhea were ameliorated by administration with INO95 and INO20. Furthermore, the level of MCPT-1 decreased by treatment with inotodiol. In this study, we demonstrated for the first time that inotodiol does not cause any detrimental effect by showing anti-allergic activities in vivo by inhibiting mast cell function. Our data highlight the potential to use inotodiol as an immune modulator for diseases related to inflammation.

RESUMO

Oxidative damage is one of the major causes of human skin aging. Inotodiol is a lanostane triterpenoid that demonstrates antiviral, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities. Previous studies have reported that inotodiol also has antiallergic effects. However, whether inotodiol inhibits oxidative stress-induced human skin aging is not known. Stimulation of human dermal fibroblast cells with hydrogen peroxide is related to skin aging. Inotodiol inhibited the expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and NADPH Oxidase 5 (NOX5). Moreover, inotodiol effectively decreased nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), as well as nitric oxide (NO), reactive oxygen species (ROS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and cytokines such as IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α. Based on our results, inotodiol protects human dermal fibroblast by preventing MAPK-NOX5 and NF-κB activation and attenuates the expression of aging genes. Inotodiol may therefore be considered a potential candidate for developing natural antiaging products, because it protects the human skin from oxidative stress-induced skin aging by inhibiting the MAPK-NOX5 and NF-κB signaling pathways.

RESUMO

To increase the value of yeast-fermented Korean liquor by-products, we obtained crude polysaccharide (CPS) fractions via ultrasound-assisted extraction and stepwise-gradient ethanol precipitation and investigated their functionality. Nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells was increased following treatment with the CPSs derived from extract. Analysis of the monosaccharide and amino acid composition of the CPS fractions using HPLC revealed that the polysaccharides were mainly composed of glucose (57.2%), mannose (22.6%), and galactose (17.6%), and no amino acids were detected. In addition, a higher concentration of ethanol solvent for fractionation yielded polysaccharides with lower molecular weights (<15 kDa). CPS 3 and 4 fractions increased the production of TNF-α (15 and 17-fold, respectively) and IL-6 (20 and 18-fold, respectively) and iNOS (65 and 35-fold, respectively) expression at concentration 12.5 µg/mL compared with levels in non-treated RAW 264.7 cells. Especially, CPS 4 at 200 and 400 µg/mL significantly increased the proliferation of mouse spleen cells by 126% and 153%, respectively. These results indicated that CPS 4 enhanced the proliferation of mouse spleen cells in vivo, indicating its immune-enhancing effects. Therefore, this research can contribute to the development of eco-friendly extraction techniques and immune-enhancing materials.

RESUMO

The maxillary sinus is the largest of the four paranasal sinuses in humans, and its close proximity to the teeth means that caution is required during dental treatment. In particular, implant surgeries involving the maxillary posterior teeth should include evaluating the inferior part of the maxillary sinus. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the differences by comparing the inferior part of the maxillary sinus based on the nasal cavity floor (NCF) between patients (male 30, female 30) genders through the use of the three-dimensional (3-D) program that can facilitate 3-D visualizations. The present study results obtained from 3-D visualizations using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data showed that the inferior part of the maxillary sinus was mostly larger in males than in females. In addition, the utilization of 3-D visualization data was more likely to assure accuracy than when using data obtained by two-dimensional (2-D) imaging. Therefore, 3-D visualizations of the inferior part of the maxillary sinus will contribute to accurate analyses of its anatomical structure during implant surgery and other operations. Further studies utilizing 3-D visualization will yield useful fundamental data and guidelines for future research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The traditional method of distraction required a long period until the new bone was fully fused. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of cyclic and repetitive compressive force on new bone formation by applying a newly designed microactuator-generated distractor compared with the traditional distraction protocol. METHODS: The distraction devices were applied to the right and left mandibles of eight mature beagles, four of which were allocated to the experimental group and the other four to the control group. After a 5-day latency period, in the experimental group, 1.5-mm distraction and 0.5-mm compression were alternately applied every 12 hours; and in the control group, 0.5-mm distraction was repeated every 12 hours to perform a total of 7-mm mandibular lengthening. After an 8-week consolidation period, microstructure analysis using micro-computed tomography and histologic evaluations were performed. RESULTS: Bone volume fraction and trabecular number were significantly higher in the experimental group. Trabecular thickness did not show a significant difference, and trabecular separation was significantly higher in the control group. The measurement of new bone was significantly higher in the experimental group, but the difference in mineral apposition rate between the experimental and control groups was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: This study has revealed that applying cyclic compressive and tensile forces during the distraction period induces better new bone formation than repetitive distraction alone. In addition, the new distraction device produced reliable distraction results during the experiment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Formaldehyde exposure is associated with nasopharyngeal cancer and leukemia. Previously-described links between formaldehyde exposure and lung cancer have been weak and inconsistent. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate quantitatively the association between formaldehyde exposure and lung cancer. METHODS: We searched for articles on occupational formaldehyde exposure and lung cancer in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and CINAHL databases. In total, 32 articles were selected and 31 studies were included in a meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses and quality assessments were also performed. RESULTS: The risk of lung cancer among workers exposed to formaldehyde was not significantly increased, with an overall pooled risk estimate of 1.04 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.97-1.12). The pooled risk estimate of lung cancer was increased when higher exposure studies were considered (1.19; 95% CI, 0.96-1.46). More statistically robust results were obtained when high quality (1.13; 95% CI, 1.08-1.19) and recent (1.13; 95% CI, 1.07-1.19) studies were used in deriving pooled risk estimates. CONCLUSIONS: No significant increase in the risk of lung cancer was evident in the overall pooled risk estimate; even in higher formaldehyde exposure groups. Our findings do not provide strong evidence in favor of formaldehyde as a risk factor for lung cancer. However, since risk estimates were significantly increased for high-quality and recent studies, the possibility that exposure to formaldehyde can increase the risk of lung cancer might still be considered.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Depression is considered as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and associated with changes in individuals' health status that might influence CVD risk. However, most studies have scrutinized this relationship on a rather narrower and specific study population. By focusing on general population of Korea, we sought to inspect the association of depression with CVD risk and cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: The data from the first year (2016) of the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was used. Participants were classified by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score as such: normal group (PHQ-9 score 0-4), mild depression (MD) group (PHQ-9 score 5-9) and moderate and severe depression (MSD) group (PHQ-9 score 10-27). General linear model was used to analyze differences and the trend of mean CVD risk according to depression level. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) were calculated by logistic regression to identify the association between depression and cardiovascular risk factors after adjusting for age. RESULTS: Mean CVD risk of MSD group was higher than that of normal group (p < 0.05). There was a tendency of CVD risk to increase as depression worsened (p < 0.01). Among men, MSD group was associated with current smoking (AOR, 2.97; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.78-4.97), taking antihypertensive medications (AOR, 2.42; 95% CI, 1.26-4.66), increased fasting blood sugar (> 125 mg/dL; AOR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.25-4.50) and taking diabetes medications (AOR, 3.08; 95% CI, 1.65-5.72). MD group was associated with current smoking (AOR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.18-2.17). Among women, MSD group was associated with high body mass index (≥ 25 kg/m2; AOR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.11-2.32), large waist circumference (≥ 85 cm; AOR, 1.63; 95% CI, 1.12-2.37), current smoking (AOR, 5.11; 95% CI, 3.07-8.52) and taking diabetes medications (AOR, 2.62; 95% CI, 1.68-4.08). MD group was associated with current smoking (AOR, 1.86; 95% CI, 1.18-2.93). CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that depression is associated with increased risk for CVD occurrence in general population of Korea.

RESUMO

STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective comparative study. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this article was to evaluate the clinical and radiologic efficacies of minimally invasive lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) for clinical adjacent segment pathology (ASP). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Minimally invasive techniques have been increasingly applied for spinal surgery. No report has compared LLIF with conventional posterior lumbar interbody fusion for clinical ASP. METHODS: Forty patients undergoing LLIF with posterior fusion (hybrid surgery) were compared with 40 patients undergoing conventional posterior lumbar interbody fusion (posterior surgery). The radiologic outcomes including indirect decompression in hybrid surgery group, and clinical outcomes such as the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were assessed. Postoperative major complications and reoperations were also compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS: Correction of coronal Cobb's angle and segmental lordosis in the hybrid surgery were significantly greater postoperatively (2.8 vs. 0.9 degrees, P=0.012; 7.4 vs. 2.5 degrees, P=0.009) and at the last follow-up (2.4 vs. 0.5 degrees, P=0.026; 4.8 vs. 0.8 degrees, P=0.016) compared with posterior surgery. As regards indirect decompression of the LLIF, significant increases in thecal sac (83.4 vs. 113.8 mm) and foraminal height (17.8 vs. 20.9 mm) were noted on postoperative magnetic resonance imaging. Although postoperative back VAS (4.1 vs. 5.6, P=0.011) and ODI (48.9% vs. 59.6%, P=0.007) were significantly better in hybrid surgery, clinical outcomes at the last follow-up were similar. Moreover, intraoperative endplate fractures developed in 17.7% and lower leg symptoms occurred in 30.0% of patients undergoing hybrid surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Hybrid surgery for clinical ASP has advantages of segmental coronal and sagittal correction, and indirect decompression compared with conventional posterior surgery. However, LLIF-related complications such as endplate fracture and lower leg symptoms also developed. LLIF should be performed considering advantages and approach-related complications for the clinical ASP.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of thyroid cancer has been increasing rapidly worldwide, especially among women. There has been a debate as to whether such an increase represents consequences of over-diagnosis or a true increase. To find the occupational risk of Korean female workers in different industry sectors, we analyzed the data of Korean female workers. METHODS: National Female Worker Cohort data that contain information on total female workers were used for our analysis of prevalence of thyroid cancer (C73 according to KCD-5, 6 code) derived from National Health Insurance data. By combining industrial codes from National Health Insurance Service and those from Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service, the classification of industrial codes became to consist of the total of thirty three representing both non-office (NO) and office (O) categories. Both an internal comparison among female workers within the cohort and an external comparison to compare female workers with Korean general female population were carried out. RESULTS: Among 149,258 female workers, 2,641 cases of thyroid cancers were identified. Differences in prevalence of thyroid cancer between female workers (40.5%) and general Korean female population (32.6%) were observed; however, the differences in prevalence of thyroid cancer between NO workers and O workers were not apparent. An analysis involving workers in Financial and insurance activities sector revealed that, standardized prevalence rate (SPR) of both NO (2.96, 95% CI = 2.01-4.20) and O workers (3.68, 95% CI = 3.10-4.33) increased significantly and that an AOR (adjusted odds ratio) increased marginally (1.38, 95% CI = 0.97-1.96). Further, when stratified in respect to the duration of employment, an AOR of female workers having been employed for more than 8 years showed a significant increase (1.63, 95% CI = 1.07-2.49). CONCLUSIONS: Female workers had a higher risk of thyroid cancer than general female population but the difference between NO workers and O workers was not found to be significant in most industrial sectors. Further studies using data with information regarding specific occupational exposures are needed.

RESUMO

Anthocyanins, the most prevalent flavonoids in red/purple fruits and vegetables, are known to improve immune responses and reduce chronic disease risks. In this study, the anti-inflammatory activities of an anthocyanin-rich extract from red Chinese cabbage (ArCC) were shown based on its inhibitory effects in cultured endothelial cells and hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice. ArCC treatment suppressed monocyte adhesion to tumor necrosis factor-α-stimulated endothelial cells. This was validated by ArCC's ability to downregulate the expression and transcription of endothelial adhesion molecules, determined by immunoblot and luciferase promoter assays, respectively. The regulation of adhesion molecules was accompanied by transcriptional inhibition of nuclear factor-κB, which restricted cytoplasmic localization as shown by immunocytochemistry. Administration of ArCC (150 or 300 mg/kg/day) inhibited aortic inflammation in hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice, as shown by in vivo imaging. Immunohistochemistry and plasma analysis showed that the aortas from these mice exhibited markedly lower leukocyte infiltration, reduced plaque formation, and lower concentrations of blood inflammatory cytokines than those observed in the control mice. The results suggest that the consumption of anthocyanin-rich red Chinese cabbage is closely correlated with lowering the risk of vascular inflammatory diseases.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Spinal transpedicular screw fixation is widely performed. Broken pedicle screw rates range from 3%-7.1%. Several techniques have been described for extraction of broken pedicle screws. However, most of these techniques require special instruments. We describe a simple, modified technique for management of broken pedicle screws without extraction. No special instruments or drilling in an adjacent pedicle are required. METHODS: We used a high-speed air drill with a round burr. With C-arm fluoroscopy guidance, the distal fragment of a broken pedicle screw was palpated using free-hand technique through the screw entry hole. A high-speed air drill with a round burr (not a diamond burr) was inserted through the hole. Drilling began slowly and continued until enough space was obtained for new screw insertion. Using this space, we performed new pedicle screw fixation medially alongside the distal fragment of the broken pedicle screw. We performed the insertion with a previously used entry hole and pathway in the pedicle. The same size pedicle screw was used. RESULTS: Three patients were treated with this modified technique. New screw insertion was successful in all cases after partial drilling of the distal broken pedicle screw fragment. There were no complications, such as screw loosening, dural tears, or root injury. CONCLUSION: We describe a simple, modified technique for management of broken pedicle screws without extraction. This technique is recommended in patients who require insertion of a new screw.

RESUMO

Lumbar disk herniation is common. Because of the posterior longitudinal ligament, migration usually occurs into the ventral epidural space. Rarely, fragments migrate into the dorsal epidural space. A 57-year-old man presented with lower back pain and weakness on right hip flexion and right knee flexion. He had lower back pain 1 day previously and received a transforaminal epidural block at a local hospital. The next day, he reported weakness of the right lower extremity. Lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed a dorsal epidural lesion with compression of the thecal sac at L2-3. Initial differential diagnoses included epidural hematoma after the block, neoplasm, and a sequestrated disk. Posterior lumbar decompression was performed. The lesion was identified intraoperatively as a large herniated disk fragment. Posterior epidural herniation of a lumbar disk fragment is rare and may be difficult to diagnose preoperatively. It may present as a variety of clinical scenarios and, as in this case, may mimic epidural hematoma.

RESUMO

Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis, commonly known as Chinese cabbage, is a cruciferous vegetable traditionally consumed in east Asia. Although its habitual consumption could account for the low incidence of chronic vascular inflammation, the therapeutic and protective potential of phytochemicals derived from Chinese cabbage has been poorly studied. In this study, we identified the phenolic compounds, kaempferol and quercetin, from the ethanol extract of Chinese cabbage (EtCC). We show for the first time that EtCC contains effective phytochemicals that suppress tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-induced inflammatory response in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. The EtCC inhibited TNF-α-induced monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells in a dose-dependent manner. The antiadhesive activity of EtCC directly correlated with downregulation of expression and transcription of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). It was caused by an Nrf-2-dependent mechanism, leading to activation of antioxidant responsive element-driven promoter. Taken together, these results suggest that EtCC inhibits the expression of TNF-α-induced adhesion molecules through the indirect transcriptional modulation of VCAM-1 in endothelial cells. In conclusion, regular consumption of vegetables containing dietary phytochemicals might be a potential therapeutic strategy to protect against various stresses, to prevent several pathological conditions, and to treat chronic vascular inflammation, such as atherosclerosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Destructive spondyloarthropathy (DSA) is one of the major complications in patients undergoing long-term hemodialysis. To the best of our knowledge, an epidural abscess occurring at the level of preexisting cervical DSA has not been well described in the literature. We report a unique case of quadriplegia caused by an epidural abscess occurring at the same level of preexisting cervical DSA. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old woman was transferred to our emergency department with 5 days of sepsis, drowsy mental status, and quadriplegia below the C5 level. The patient had a medical history of hemodialysis for 10 years. Magnetic resonance imaging showed spinal cord compression by an epidural abscess at the level of preexisting cervical DSA. Blood culture revealed methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. Infection of the arteriovenous (AV) shunt was considered as the primary focus of sepsis and pyogenic spondylitis. We performed an emergent open door laminoplasty and the vascular team debrided the infected AV shunt site. Approximately 8 months after surgery, the patient was able to perform activities of daily living somewhat independently. CONCLUSIONS: Emergent surgical decompression and intensive medical care led to successful recovery from a septic and quadriplegic state in this patient. When diagnosing a patient who has undergone long-term hemodialysis presenting with neurologic deficits, the possibility of infectious spondylitis at the same level as DSA should be considered.

RESUMO

The indications and clinical necessity for routine hardware removal after treating ankle or distal tibia fracture with open reduction and internal fixation are disputed even when hardware-related pain is insignificant. Thus, we determined the clinical effects of routine hardware removal irrespective of the degree of hardware-related pain, especially in the perspective of patients' daily activities. This study was conducted on 80 consecutive cases (78 patients) treated by surgery and hardware removal after bony union. There were 56 ankle and 24 distal tibia fractures. The hardware-related pain, ankle joint stiffness, discomfort on ambulation, and patient satisfaction were evaluated before and at least 6 months after hardware removal. Pain score before hardware removal was 3.4 (range 0 to 6) and decreased to 1.3 (range 0 to 6) after removal. 58 (72.5%) patients experienced improved ankle stiffness and 65 (81.3%) less discomfort while walking on uneven ground and 63 (80.8%) patients were satisfied with hardware removal. These results suggest that routine hardware removal after ankle or distal tibia fracture could ameliorate hardware-related pain and improves daily activities and patient satisfaction even when the hardware-related pain is minimal.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With increasing use of medical radiologic procedures, wearing proper protector should be emphasized to reduce occupational radiation exposures. This research describes the rates of lead apron wearing for radiation protection and assessed occupational factors related to wearing rates for various types of healthcare professionals. METHODS: We conducted a self-administered questionnaire survey through a website, on-site visits, fax, and mail. Of the 13,489 participants, 8858 workers who could not completely separate themselves from radiological procedure areas. Their general characteristics (sex and age), work history (job title, duration of employment, and hospital type), and practices (frequency of radiation procedures, ability to completely separate from radiation, and frequency of wearing protective lead aprons) were examined. RESULTS: The mean rate of lead apron wearing during radiologic procedures was 48.0 %. The rate was different according to sex (male: 52.9 %, female: 39.6 %), hospital type (general hospital: 63.0 %, hospital: 51.3 %, clinic: 35.6 %, dental hospital/clinic: 13.3 %, public health center: 22.8 %), and job title (radiologic technologist: 50.3 %, doctor: 70.3 %, dentist/dental hygienist: 15.0 %, nurse/nursing assistant: 64.5 %) (p < 0.001). By logistic regression analysis stratified by job title, use of lead aprons by radiologic technologists and nurses/nursing assistants was associated with hospital type and exposure frequency score. For doctors, apron wearing was associated with employment duration. For dentists/dental hygienists, apron wearing was associated with the exposure frequency score. CONCLUSIONS: To improve working environments for healthcare professionals exposed to radiation, it is necessary to consider related factors, such as job title, duration of employment, and hospital type, when utilizing a planning and management system to prevent radiation-related health problems.
