RESUMO

Obesity requires treatment to mitigate the potential development of further metabolic disorders, including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, tumor growth, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We investigated the anti-obesity effect of a 30% ethanol extract of Eisenia bicyclis (Kjellman) Setchell (EEB) on 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese C57BL/6 mice. Adipogenesis transcription factors including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ, CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-alpha (C/EBPα), and sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1) were ameliorated through the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway by EEB treatment in differentiated 3T3-L1 cells. EEB attenuated mitotic clonal expansion by upregulating cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors (CDKIs) while downregulating cyclins and CDKs. In HFD-fed mice, EEB significantly decreased the total body weight, fat tissue weight, and fat in the tissue. The protein expression of PPARγ, C/EBPα, and SREBP-1 was increased in the subcutaneous fat and liver tissues, while EEB decreased the expression levels of these transcription factors. EEB also inhibited lipogenesis by downregulating acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) expression in the subcutaneous fat and liver tissues. Moreover, the phosphorylation of AMPK and ACC was downregulated in the HFD-induced mouse group, whereas the administration of EEB improved AMPK and ACC phosphorylation; thus, EEB treatment may be related to the AMPK pathway. Histological analysis showed that EEB reduced the adipocyte size and fat accumulation in subcutaneous fat and liver tissues, respectively. EEB promotes thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue and improves insulin and leptin levels and blood lipid profiles. Our results suggest that EEB could be used as a potential agent to prevent obesity.

With the escalating global awareness of air quality management, the need for continuous and reliable monitoring of toxic gases by using low-power operating systems has become increasingly important. One of which, semiconductor metal oxide gas sensors have received great attention due to their high/fast response and simple working mechanism. More specifically, self-heating metal oxide gas sensors, wherein direct thermal activation in the sensing material, have been sought for their low power-consuming characteristics. However, previous works have neglected to address the temperature distribution within the sensing material, resulting in inefficient gas response and prolonged response/recovery times, particularly due to the low-temperature regions. Here, we present a unique metal/metal oxide/metal (MMOM) nanowire architecture that conductively confines heat to the sensing material, achieving high uniformity in the temperature distribution. The proposed structure enables uniform thermal activation within the sensing material, allowing the sensor to efficiently react with the toxic gas. As a result, the proposed MMOM gas sensor showed significantly enhanced gas response (from 6.7 to 20.1% at 30 ppm), response time (from 195 to 17 s at 30 ppm), and limit of detection (∼1 ppm) when compared to those of conventional single-material structures upon exposure to carbon monoxide. Furthermore, the proposed work demonstrated low power consumption (2.36 mW) and high thermal durability (1500 on/off cycles), demonstrating its potential for practical applications in reliable and low-power operating gas sensor systems. These results propose a new paradigm for power-efficient and robust self-heating metal oxide gas sensors with potential implications for other fields requiring thermal engineering.

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms counteract the pathogenesis of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, aging, and cancer. Therefore, enhancing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions may help manage these pathological conditions. This study aimed to assess the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potentials of lipophilic fraction of Liriope platyphylla seeds (LLPS) using network pharmacology, molecular docking, and in vitro experiments. Here GC-MS analysis tentatively identified forty-three lipophilic compounds in LLPS. LLPS exhibited powerful antioxidant activity, according to the results from chemical-based antioxidant assays on DPPH, ABTS+, superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, and hydroxyl radicals scavenging, lipid peroxidation, reducing antioxidant powers, and total antioxidant capacity. Additionally, LLPS enhanced cellular antioxidant capacity by inhibiting reactive oxygen species formation and elevating antioxidant enzyme levels, including catalase and heme oxygenase-1. Moreover, LLPS attenuated inflammatory response by reducing nitric oxide secretion and downregulating the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, and interleukin-1ß in lipopolysaccharide-treated macrophages. Network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses showed that key compounds in LPPS, particularly phytosterols and fatty acid esters, exerted antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties through regulating NFKB1, PTGS1, PTGS2, TLR4, PRKCA, PRKCD, KEAP1, NFE2L2, and NR1l2. Overall, these data suggest that LLPS may be a potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent for developing functional foods.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to provide a more valuable diagnostic parameter and more equivocal assessment of the diagnostic potential of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) by comparing the quadriceps tendon cross-sectional area (QTCSA) with the quadriceps tendon thickness (QTT), a traditional measure of quadriceps tendon hypertrophy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between March 2014 and August 2020, a total of 30 patients with PFPS (16 males, 14 females; mean age, 30.4±11.2 years; range, 16 to 49 years) and 30 healthy individuals (19 males, 11 females; mean age: 30.8±13.8 years; range, 17 to 62 years) who underwent knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were retrospectively analyzed. T1-weighted turbo spin-echo transverse MRI scans were obtained. The QTCSA was measured on the axial angled phases of the images by drawing outlines, and the QTT was measured at the most hypertrophied quadriceps tendon. RESULTS: The mean QTT and QTCSA in the patients with PFPS (6.33±0.80 mm and 155.77±36.60 mm2, respectively) were significantly higher than those in the control group (5.77±0.36 mm and 111.90±24.10 mm2, respectively; p<0.001, for both). The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to confirm the sensitivities and specificities for both the QTT and QTCSA as predictors of PFPS. The optimal diagnostic cut-off value for QTT was 5.98 mm, with a sensitivity of 66.7%, a specificity of 70.0%, and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.75 (range, 0.62 to 0.88). The optimal diagnostic cut-off value for QTCSA was 121.04 mm2, with a sensitivity of 73.3%, a specificity of 70.0%, and an AUC of 0.83 (range, 0.74 to 0.93). CONCLUSION: Based on our study results, the QTCSA seems to be a more reliable diagnostic indicator for PFPS than QTT.

The recruitment of monocytes and their differentiation into immunosuppressive cells is associated with the low efficacy of preclinical nonconformal radiotherapy (RT) for tumors. However, nonconformal RT (non-CRT) does not mimic clinical practice, and little is known about the role of monocytes after RT modes used in patients, such as conformal RT (CRT). Here, we investigated the acute immune response induced by after CRT. Contrary to non-CRT approaches, we found that CRT induces a rapid and robust recruitment of monocytes to the tumor that minimally differentiate into tumor-associated macrophages or dendritic cells but instead up-regulate major histocompatibility complex II and costimulatory molecules. We found that these large numbers of infiltrating monocytes are responsible for activating effector polyfunctional CD8+ tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes that reduce tumor burden. Mechanistically, we show that monocyte-derived type I interferon is pivotal in promoting monocyte accumulation and immunostimulatory function in a positive feedback loop. We also demonstrate that monocyte accumulation in the tumor microenvironment is hindered when RT inadvertently affects healthy tissues, as occurs in non-CRT. Our results unravel the immunostimulatory function of monocytes during clinically relevant modes of RT and demonstrate that limiting the exposure of healthy tissues to radiation has a positive therapeutic effect on the overall antitumor immune response.

In recent years, there has been a great deal of interest in the ectopic roles of olfactory receptors (ORs) throughout the human body. Especially, the ectopic function of OR in the skin is one of the most actively researched areas. Suberic acid, a scent compound, was hypothesized to increase collagen synthesis in the ultraviolet B (UVB)-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts (Hs68) through a specific olfactory receptor. Suberic acid ameliorated UVB-induced decreases in collagen production in Hs68 cells. Using in silico docking to predict the binding conformation and affinity of suberic acid to 15 ectopic ORs detectable in Hs68, several ORs were identified as promising candidates. The effect of suberic acid on collagen synthesis in UVB-exposed dermal fibroblasts was nullified only by a reduction in OR10A3 expression via specific siRNA. In addition, using the cells transiently expressing OR10A3, we demonstrated that suberic acid can activate OR10A3 by assessing the downstream effector cAMP response element (CRE) luciferase activity. We examined that the activation of OR10A3 by suberic acid subsequently stimulates collagen synthesis via the downstream cAMP-Akt pathway. The findings support OR10A3 as a promising target for anti-aging treatments of the skin.

Machilus thunbergii Sieb. & Zucc., commonly known as Japanese bay tree, is a large evergreen tree belonging to the Lauraceae family and is widely distributed in Asia, including Korea in subtropical and tropical forest areas (Wu et al., 2006). In April 2021, a root rot disease of 2-year-old Japanese bay trees was observed in a nursery on Wando Island in Korea. Tree roots exhibited brown to black discoloration, root rot, and deterioration, and leaves were severely wilted followed by plant death, with a disease incidence of approximately 30%. Symptomatic roots were surface sterilized with 1% NaOCl for 5 min and washed three times with distilled water. The root tissues were dried and plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and vegetable juice agar (V8) media. After 3-4 days of incubation at 25 ˚C, brown Rhizoctonia fungal-like colonies grew on both culture media. Hyphae of two representative isolates (CMML21-35 and CMML21-36) exhibited typical characteristics of Rhizoctonia, including a constriction of branching hyphae (Alvarez et al., 2013). In addition, two nuclei in each mycelial cell were observed after staining of mycelia with 0.1% Safranin O. The two isolates were identified as binucleate Rhizoctonia based on the microscopic observation. To confirm identification of the isolates, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) regions were sequenced using two primer sets, ITS1/ITS4 and LROR/LR5 (White et al., 1990; Vilgalys and Hester 1990). BLASTn search analysis revealed that the ITS sequence of isolates had 99.66% (582 base pair matched of 584) sequence similarity with the sequences of binucleate Rhizoctonia (accession numbers JF519837 and AY927327, respectively) and the LSU sequence matched well with the sequence of Rhizoctonia sp. AG-G (accession number MN977413; similarity 99.56% and 910 base pair matched of 914). The sequences were deposited in GenBank under accession numbers OM049427 and OM049428 for ITS, OM679289 and OM679290 for LSU. Phylogenetic analysis of ITS and LSU regions revealed that the isolates grouped with binucleate Rhizoctonia anastomosis group AG-G (Teleomorph: Ceratobasidium sp.) with a high bootstrap value. Accordingly, the morphological and molecular characteristics confirmed the causal pathogen as binucleate Rhizoctonia AG-G (Jiang et al., 2016; Gonzalez et al. 2016). To test pathogenicity, a 2-year-old Japanese bay tree was inoculated by creating a hole in the soil near the root rhizosphere and placing 1.5g of ground mycelia obtained from a 5 day-old broth culture at two time points one week apart (Bartz et al., 2010). The control pot was inoculated with sterilized ddH2O. Inoculated and control plant pots were incubated in plastic boxes with 100% relative humidity at 25 ℃ for five days. After that, the pots were placed in the greenhouse at 23-25 ℃. One month post inoculation, initial disease symptoms were observed, and after two months, severe foliar wilting and eventual plant death occurred. The non-inoculated control remained healthy. The pathogen was re-isolated from infected roots, fulfilling Koch's postulates. The experiment was conducted three times with three replications. This is the first report of root rot of Japanese bay tree caused by binucleate Rhizoctonia AG-G in Korea and in the world. Previously, a pathogenic binucleate Rhizoctonia AG-G was isolated from colonized apple tree roots in orchards in Italy (Kelderer et al., 2012). The present study implies that this pathogen potentially causes a negative impact on the nursery and forest industries, thus further research on the screening for pathogenicity in other tropical and subtropical trees and also apple, which is an important crop in Korea, is needed.

Many patients seek information online, including on social media, regarding various health topics. This study aimed to investigate whether YouTube videos on endometriosis could be a useful source for the general population, surgical trainees, and specialists. A YouTube search was conducted on December 26, 2021, using the search terms "endometriosis," "endometrioma," and "endometriotic cyst." Videos were sorted by view count, and the 100 videos with the highest view counts were chosen. After excluding 48 videos for various reasons, 52 were included in the final analysis. The number of views, duration, likes and dislikes, content type, and source of each video were recorded. We referred to a previous study to evaluate video quality. The 52 videos related to endometriosis had a total of 35,220,141 views (median 233,688, range 48,874-10,452,366). Based on authorship, the videos were categorized into videos uploaded by the medical group and the nonmedical group. The medical group mainly uploaded videos directly related to endometriosis, such as explanations or detailed surgical procedures for endometriosis (26/27, 96%), whereas the nonmedical group mainly uploaded videos about personal experiences and others (24/25, 96%; P <.001). Evaluating the score by each type of content, videos containing personal experiences (median score 6, range 3-10) scored significantly lower than videos containing other content such as explanations of the disease (median score 14, range 7-18; P < .001) and surgical procedures (median score 9, range 5-17; P < .001). Analysis according to the source, the number of views and video power index was significantly higher in the videos uploaded by the nonmedical group (P < .05). YouTube is currently not an appropriate source for patients to gain information on endometriosis. Credible videos with accurate information and clear, high-quality operative clips with proper scientific commentary should be uploaded by medical professionals and medical institutions to critically and rapidly appraise the quality of online video-disseminated information on endometriosis. In addition, advanced filtering using categories by YouTube's staff appears to be necessary.

Dermal papilla cells (DPCs) are growth factor reservoirs that are specialized for hair morphogenesis and regeneration. Due to their essential role in hair growth, DPCs are commonly used as an in vitro model to investigate the effects of hair growth-regulating compounds and their molecular mechanisms of action. Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), an intracellular second messenger, is currently employed as a growth-promoting target molecule. In a pilot test, we found that α-phellandrene, a naturally occurring phytochemical, increased cAMP levels in DPCs. Therefore, we sought to determine whether α-phellandrene increases growth factors and proliferation in human DPCs and to identify the underlying mechanisms. We demonstrated that α-phellandrene promotes cell proliferation concentration-dependently. In addition, it increases the cAMP downstream effectors, such as protein kinase A catalytic subunit (PKA Cα) and phosphorylated cAMP-responsive element-binding protein (CREB). Also, among the CREB-dependent growth factor candidates, we identified that α-phellandrene selectively upregulated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA expression in DPCs. Notably, the beneficial effects of α-phellandrene were nullified by a cAMP inhibitor. This study demonstrated the cAMP-mediated growth effects in DPCs and the therapeutic potential of α-phellandrene for preventing hair loss.

Sweet potato is the 11th most important food crop in the world and an excellent source of nutrition. Postharvest diseases were monitored in sweet potato storage roots collected from the local markets in Korea during 2021. Several diseases including Fusarium surface and root rot, charcoal rot, dry rot, and soft rot were observed in the postharvest sweet potatoes. A total of 68 fungal isolates were obtained from the diseased samples, and the isolates were grouped into 8 different fungal colony types. Based on multilocus phylogeny and morphological analysis of 17 representative isolates, the isolates were identified as Fusarium oxysporum, F. ipomoeae, F. solani, Penicillium citrinum, P. rotoruae, Aspergillus wentii, Mucor variicolumellatus (Mu. circinelloides species complex), and Macrophomina phaseolina. F. oxysporum was the predominant pathogen as this is the most common pathogen of sweet potato storage roots causing the surface rot disease, and M. phaseolina caused the most severe disease among the pathogens. Dual culture antagonistic assays were evaluated using Trichoderma harzianum strains CMML20-26 and CMML20-27. The results revealed that the two strains showed strong antifungal activity in different ranges against all tested pathogens. This study provides an understanding of diverse postharvest diseases in sweet potatoes and suggests potential biocontrol agents to manage the diseases. In addition, this is the first report of sweet potato storage root rot diseases caused by A. wentii, and P. rotoruae worldwide.

INTRODUCTION: The consumption of heated tobacco products (HTPs) is increasing among adolescents worldwide. Although suicide and HTP use are linked, the association between suicide-related behavior, HTP use, and indirect smoking exposure are not yet properly studied. This study examined the association of HTP use and exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) with suicidal ideation, suicide plans, and suicide attempts among South Korean adolescents. METHODS: Data from 57303 respondents (95.3% response rate) were obtained from the 2019 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. Chi-squared tests and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to examine the association of HTP use and SHS exposure with suicidal ideation, suicide plans, and suicide attempts among adolescents. Multivariable logistic regression analyses included: Model 1, which was adjusted for demographic characteristics such as sex, school type, perceived school performance, economic status, and residence type; and Model 2, which was adjusted for demographics, depression, and drug use. RESULTS: The risk of suicidal ideation was 1.37 (95% CI: 1.10-1.70) and 1.44 (95% CI: 1.18-1.75) times higher among HTP users who were exposed to SHS at home and at public places, respectively, compared to non-users. The risk of suicide attempts was 1.88 (95% CI: 1.37-2.57), 1.45 (95% CI: 1.63-2.00), and 2.21 (95% CI: 1.63-3.00) times higher among HTP users exposed to SHS at home, school, and at public places, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: HTP use, and SHS exposure are likely indicators of risk behaviors. Our findings suggest possible directions for initiating, implementing, and evaluating programs and services to monitor HTP use and SHS exposure among Korean adolescents.

Skin dermis comprises extracellular matrix components, mainly collagen fibers. A decrease in collagen synthesis caused by several factors, including ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and stress, eventually causes extrinsic skin aging. Olfactory receptors (ORs) were initially considered to be specifically expressed in nasal tissue, but several ORs have been reported to be present in other tissues, and their biological roles have recently received increasing attention. In this study, we aimed to characterize the role of ORs in cell survival and collagen synthesis in dermal fibroblasts. We confirmed that UVB irradiation and dexamethasone exposure significantly decreased cell survival and collagen synthesis in Hs68 dermal fibroblasts. Moreover, we demonstrated that the mRNA expression of 10 ORs detectable in Hs68 cells was significantly downregulated in aged conditions compared with that in normal conditions. Thereafter, by individual knockdown of the 10 candidate ORs, we identified that only OR51B5 knockdown leads to a reduction of cell survival and collagen synthesis. OR51B5 knockdown decreased cAMP levels and dampened the downstream protein kinase A/cAMP-response element binding protein pathway, downregulating the survival- and collagen synthesis-related genes in the dermal fibroblasts. Therefore, OR51B5 may be an interesting candidate that plays a role in cell survival and collagen synthesis.

RESUMO

Melanin, which determines the color of the skin and hair, is initially synthesized to protect the skin from ultraviolet light; however, excessive melanin pigmentation caused by abnormal cell proliferation can result in various melanocytic lesions. Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) is known to regulate cell cycle progression and consequently to inhibit the division of abnormally proliferating cells. In this work, we aimed to test whether carvone, a scent compound from plants, inhibits proliferation and subsequently reduces melanin content of melanoma cells and to determine whether its beneficial effects are mediated by the cAMP pathway. We found that carvone decreases melanin content and inhibits melanoma cell proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner. Meanwhile, it inhibited the activation of cell cycle-associated proteins such as cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1). Of note, the beneficial effects of carvone were abrogated by cAMP inhibition. Our findings indicate potential benefits of carvone for the treatment of melanomas and presumably other hyperpigmentation-related dermatological disorders such as melasmas, lentigines, and excessive freckles.

Human hair follicle dermal papilla cells (DPCs) are a specialized population of cells located in the hair follicles and regulate hair growth and development, particularly by releasing numerous growth factors in response to various physiological conditions. In the present study, we aimed to test whether nonanal, a scent compound from plants, stimulated growth factors in DPCs and to delineate the underlying mechanisms involved. We found that nonanal promoted DPC proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Meanwhile, it also increased the intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels and the expression of various growth factor genes such as vascular endothelial growth factor, keratinocyte growth factor, and insulin-like growth factor 1. Furthermore, nonanal treatment stimulated DPC migration. Notably, the benefits of nonanal use were abrogated by cAMP inhibition. Our results reveal the potential of nonanal in preventing hair loss and suggest that its effects are cAMP-mediated in DPCs.

Microbial communities in the evaporator core (EC) of automobile air-conditioning systems have a large impact on indoor air quality, such as malodor and allergenicity. DNA-based microbial population analysis of the ECs collected from South Korea, China, the United States, India, and the United Arab Emirates revealed the extraordinary dominance of Methylobacterium species in EC biofilms. Mixed-volatile organic compound (VOC) utilization and biofilm-forming capabilities were evaluated to explain the dominance of Methylobacterium species in the ECs. The superior growth of all Methylobacterium species could be possible under mixed-VOC conditions. Interestingly, two lifestyle groups of Methylobacterium species could be categorized as the aggregator group, which sticks together but forms a small amount of biofilm, and the biofilm-forming group, which forms a large amount of biofilm, and their genomes along with phenotypic assays were analyzed. Pili are some of the major contributors to the aggregator lifestyle, and succinoglycan exopolysaccharide production may be responsible for the biofilm formation. However, the coexistence of these two lifestyle Methylobacterium groups enhanced their biofilm formation compared to that with each single culture.IMPORTANCE Air-conditioning systems (ACS) are indispensable for human daily life; however, microbial community analysis in automobile ACS has yet to be comprehensively investigated. A bacterial community analysis of 24 heat exchanger fins from five countries (South Korea, China, the United States, India, and the United Arab Emirates [UAE]) revealed that Methylobacterium species are some of the dominant bacteria in automobile ACS. Furthermore, we suggested that the predominance of Methylobacterium species in automobile ACS is due to the utilization of mixed volatile organic compounds and their great ability for aggregation and biofilm formation.

The human POZ domain and Krüppel-like zinc finger (POK) family proteins play important roles in the regulation of apoptosis, cell proliferation, differentiation, development, oncogenesis, and tumor suppression. A novel POK family transcription factor, BTB/POZ and zinc finger domains factor on chromosome 1 (BOZF-1; also called ZBTB8A), contains a POZ domain and two C2H2-type Krüppel-like zinc fingers and is localized at nuclear speckles. Compared with paired normal tissues, BOZF1 expression is increased in cancer tissues of the prostate, breast, and cervix. BOZF1 repressed the transcription of p21WAF/CDKN1A by acting on the proximal promoter concentrated with Sp1-binding GC boxes. BOZF1 competed with Sp1 in binding to GC boxes 1-5/6 of the CDKN1A proximal promoter. In addition, BOZF1 interacted with p53 and decreased the acetylation of p53 by p300, which reduced the DNA binding activity of p53 at the far distal p53-binding element. BOZF1 blocked the two major molecular events that are important in both constitutive and inducible transcription activation of CDKN1A. BOZF1 is unique in that it bound to all the proximal GC boxes to repress transcription, and it inhibited p53 acetylation without affecting p53 stability. BOZF1 might be a novel proto-oncoprotein that stimulates cell proliferation.

To investigate the prevalence of and the risk factors for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in South Korea, we interviewed and examined a randomly selected sample of 863 sexually active women (age range = 20-74 years, median 44) and 103 self-reported virgins from Busan. The presence of DNA of 34 different HPV types in cervical exfoliated cells was tested among sexually active women by means of a PCR-based assay. IgG antibodies against L1 virus-like particles (anti-VLPs) of HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33 and 58 were also evaluated by means of ELISA. The overall prevalence of HPV DNA was 10.4% (95% confidence interval, CI: 8.5-12.7%). The most often found HPV DNA types were HPV 70, HPV 16 and HPV 33; 19.8% (95% CI: 17.2-22.0) of sexually active women had antibodies against one or more HPV types. The most common anti-VLPs were against HPV 18, 31 and 16. Prevalences standardized by age on the basis of the world standard population were 13.0% for HPV DNA and 17.1% for anti-VLPs. The concordance between the 2 HPV markers at an individual level was modest, but the risk factors for detection of HPV DNA and anti-VLPs were similar: number of lifetime sexual partners (odds ratio, OR for >/= 4 vs. 1 = 3.5 and 5.4, respectively), seropositivity for herpes simplex virus-2 antibodies (OR = 2.6 and 2.5, respectively) and being single or divorced. HPV DNA, but not anti-VLPs, were elevated among women whose husbands were thought by their wives to have extra-marital affairs and those who had undergone vasectomy. Among 103 virgins, 4.9% had anti-VLPs (1/73 among those aged 24 years or less).

Abdominal pregnancy is extremely rare, but even more unusual is the prolonged retention of an advanced abdominal pregnancy with lithopedion formation. The presentation of lithopedion as an ovarian tumor without a symptom has not been reported in Korea. A 63-yr-old, gravida 2, para 1, woman was referred to us with an abdominal mass. Pelvic examination revealed normal postmenopausal uterus and a fetal head-sized movable hard mass in the lower abdomen. The computed tomographic scan showed a densely echogenic mass of 10-cm in diameter as an ovarian neoplasm. Laparotomy disclosed a lithopedion, of which the bones and cartilages were well preserved. There have been controversies on the treatment of lithopedion. Although some cases are stable for a long time, the morbidity increases when the operation is performed in an elderly patient. So we believe that the surgical intervention should be done as soon as possible after thorough consideration of the morbidity and the risk.
