RESUMO
O objetivo do estudo foi verificar a contribuição e a importância do Inglês como disciplina curricular do Curso de Odontologia. Foi realizada avaliação entre alunos de duas Universidades, uma pública, outra privada: a primeira oferecia o ensino da língua, através da abordagem Adapted English for Special Purpose (AESP); a segunda não oferecia o ensino da língua inglesa no currículo normal. A avaliação foi realizada através de aplicação de um teste em Inglês sobre Patologia Bucal, que foi construído atendendo à tabela de especificação que abrange as categorias do domínio cognitivo, tendo sido verificado o nível de dificuldade e a discriminação das questões. Os resultados foram analisados estatisticamente. A inclusão do Inglês no currículo de Odontologia favoreceu a produção de conhecimentos em diferentes componentes curriculares, contribuindo para a formação do Cirurgião-Dentista.
The aim of the study was to analyze the contribution and the importance of the English language in the School of Dentistry curriculum. It was compared the situation between two Universities: the experimental group was composed of students who was being subjected to the Adapted English for Special Purpose approach and the control group who was taking the Dentistry course without the English Language as part of their curriculum. The evaluation was based on an English test about Oral Pathology applied to both groups. The test was elaborated according to the specifying list with the categories of the cognitive domain; the difficulty level and the discrimination of the questions were also checked. The hypothesis was tested and the null hypothesis was rejected, at a significance level of 0,05. There was a statistically significant difference between the averages of the groups favoring the experimental group who had been subjected to the AESP approach proving that the students are able to product knowledge in the different subiects of the Dentistry curriculum.
