RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic reminded us of the urgent need for new antivirals to control emerging infectious diseases and potential future pandemics. Immunotherapy has revolutionized oncology and could complement the use of antivirals, but its application to infectious diseases remains largely unexplored. Nucleoside analogs are a class of agents widely used as antiviral and anti-neoplastic drugs. Their antiviral activity is generally based on interference with viral nucleic acid replication or transcription. Based on our previous work and computer modeling, we hypothesize that antiviral adenosine analogs, like remdesivir, have previously unrecognized immunomodulatory properties which contribute to their therapeutic activity. In the case of remdesivir, we here show that these properties are due to its metabolite, GS-441524, acting as an Adenosine A2A Receptor antagonist. Our findings support a new rationale for the design of next-generation antiviral agents with dual - immunomodulatory and intrinsic - antiviral properties. These compounds could represent game-changing therapies to control emerging viral diseases and future pandemics.

Endometrial and cervical cancer are among the most frequently diagnosed malignancies globally. Nitric oxide receptor-soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) is a heterodimeric enzyme composed of two subunits, α1 and ß1. Previously we showed that sGCα1 subunit promotes cell survival, proliferation, and migration, but the role of sGCß1 subunit has not been addressed. The aim of the present work was to study the impact of sGCß1 restoration in proliferation, survival, migration, and cell signaling in endometrial and cervical cancer cells. We found that sGCß1 transcript levels are reduced in endometrial and cervical tumors vs normal tissues. We confirmed nuclear enrichment of sGCß1, unlike sGCα1. Overexpression of sGCß1 reduced cell viability and augmented apoptotic index. Cell migration and invasion were also negatively affected. All these sGCß1-driven effects were independent of sGC enzymatic activity. sGCß1 reduced the expression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition factors such as N-cadherin and ß-catenin and increased the expression of E-cadherin. sGCß1 impacted signaling in endometrial and cervical cancer cells through significant downregulation of Akt pathway affecting some of its main targets such as GSK-3ß and c-Raf. Our results show for the first time that sGCß1 exerts several antiproliferative actions in ECC-1 and HeLa cell lines by targeting key regulatory pathways.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Data on immunoresponse after SARS-CoV-2 vaccines for patients treated with exclusive radiotherapy (RT) are scarce. Since RT may affect the immune system, we conducted the MORA trial (Antibody response and cell-mediated immunity of MOderna mRNA-1273 vaccine in patients treated with RAdiotherapy). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data regarding humoral and cellular immune response of patients treated with RT were prospectively collected after the second and third dose of mRNA vaccines. RESULTS: Ninety-two patients were enrolled. With a median of 147 days after the second dose, the median SARS-CoV-2 IgG titer was 300 BAU/mL: six patients were seronegative (Spike IgG titer ≤ 40 BAU/mL), whereas 24, 46 and 16 were poor responders (Spike IgG titer:41-200 BAU/mL), responders (Spike IgG titer:201-800 BAU/mL) and ultraresponders (Spike IgG titer > 800 BAU/mL), respectively. Among seronegative patients, two patients were negative also for cell mediated response, as tested with IFN-γ release Assay (IGRA) test. With a median of 85 days after the third dose, the median SARS-CoV-2 IgG titer was 1632 BAU/mL in 81 patients: only two patients were seronegative, whereas 16 and 63 patients were responders and ultraresponders, respectively. Among the 2 persistently seronegative patients, IGRA test was negative in one who had previously received anti-CD20 therapy. Documented paucisymptomatic (n = 3) or asymptomatic (n = 4) infection occurred after the third dose, during the Omicron wave. CONCLUSION: In patients treated with exclusive RT, even during the Omicron breakthrough, robust humoral response and clinical protection from severe SARS-CoV-2 disease were achievable with three doses of mRNA vaccine.

The immunopathological mechanisms driving the development of severe COVID-19 remain poorly defined. Here, we utilize a rhesus macaque model of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection to delineate perturbations in the innate immune system. SARS-CoV-2 initiates a rapid infiltration of plasmacytoid dendritic cells into the lower airway, commensurate with IFNA production, natural killer cell activation, and a significant increase of blood CD14-CD16+ monocytes. To dissect the contribution of lung myeloid subsets to airway inflammation, we generate a longitudinal scRNA-Seq dataset of airway cells, and map these subsets to corresponding populations in the human lung. SARS-CoV-2 infection elicits a rapid recruitment of two macrophage subsets: CD163+MRC1-, and TREM2+ populations that are the predominant source of inflammatory cytokines. Treatment with baricitinib (Olumiant®), a JAK1/2 inhibitor is effective in eliminating the influx of non-alveolar macrophages, with a reduction of inflammatory cytokines. This study delineates the major lung macrophage subsets driving airway inflammation during SARS-CoV-2 infection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We aim to adapt the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurements standard set for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients to the Spanish setting and supplement it with those variables agreed upon through initiatives proposed by the Spanish Society of Nephrologists (S.E.N.). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The working group defined a first standard set of variables based on a literature review. The S.E.N. members then assessed the suitability of each variable for inclusion (Consensus≥75%). A second draft of the standard set was generated and evaluated by the Patient advocacy group Federación Nacional de Asociaciones para la Lucha Contra las Enfermedades del Riñón (ALCER). Lastly, the working group established the final standard set of variables (Consensus≥75%). RESULTS: The standard set targets patients with very high-risk CKD (G3a/A3 and G3b/A2-G5) in pre-end-stage kidney disease (pre-ESKD), hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD), kidney transplantation (KT) or conservative care (CC). The essential follow-up variables agreed for all patients (All) were patient survival, hospitalizations, cardiovascular events, smoking status, health-related quality of life, pain, fatigue, physical function, daily activities, depression, renal function and hemoglobin. Additionally, it was agreed to collect PD survival (in PD patients), peritonitis (PD), infection/bacteremia (PD, HD, KT), vascular access type (HD), vascular access survival (HD), acute rejection (KT), post-transplant cancer (KT), albuminuria (KT) and kidney allograft survival (KT). The optional variables agreed were phosphorus (All), potassium (All), diabetes control (All with diabetes), and albuminuria (pre-ESKD). CONCLUSIONS: This standard set may constitute a highly efficient tool allowing the evaluation of patient outcomes and helping to define strategies to enhance CKD patients' quality of care in the Spanish healthcare system.

Microvascular Doppler (MicroV) is a new-generation Doppler technique developed by Esaote (Esaote s.p.a., Genova, Italy), which is able to visualize small and low-flow vessels through a suppression of interfering signals. MicroV uses advanced filters that are able to differentiate tissue artifacts from low-speed blood flows; by exploiting the space-time coherence information, these filters can selectively suppress tissue components, preserving the signal coming from the microvascular flow. This technique is clinically applied to the study of the vascularization of parenchymatous lesions, often with better diagnostic accuracy than color/power Doppler techniques. The aim of this paper is to develop a reproducible protocol for the recording and collection of MicroV intraoperative ultrasound images by the use of a capable intraoperative ultrasound machine and post-processing aimed at evaluation of brain-tumor microvascularization through the analysis of radiomic features. The proposed protocol has been internally validated on eight patients and will be firstly applied to patients affected by WHO grade IV astrocytoma (glioblastoma-GBM) candidates for craniotomy and lesion removal. In a further stage, it will be generally applied to patients with primary or metastatic brain tumors. IOUS is performed before durotomy. Tumor microvascularization is evaluated using the MicroV Doppler technique and IOUS images are recorded, stored, and post-processed. IOUS images are remotely stored on the BraTIoUS database, which will promote international cooperation and multicentric analysis. Processed images and texture radiomic features are analyzed post-operatively using ImageJ, a free scientific image-analysis software based on the Sun-Java platform. Post-processing protocol is further described in-depth. The study of tumor microvascularization through advanced IOUS techniques such as MicroV could represent, in the future, a non-invasive and real-time method for intraoperative predictive evaluation of the tumor features. This evaluation could finally result in a deeper knowledge of brain-tumor behavior and in the on-going adaptation of the surgery with the improvement of surgical outcomes.

Background: Dumbbell tumors are typically benign schwannomas, neurofibromas, and meningiomas and only rarely there are malignant variants of these lesions or other malignant histotypes. Here, a 34-year-old male presented with a thoracic spinal dumbbell metastatic neuroendocrine carcinoma of unknown primary origin. Case Description: A 34-year-old male presented with 2 months of thoracic pain and progressive mid thoracic sensory loss. A post contrast thoracic MRI showed a dumbbell tumor localized between the T7 and T9 levels with extension laterally into the T7-T8 and T8-T9 foramina. The patient underwent a laminectomy for tumor resection following which his pain and gait improved. Histopathologically, the tumor demonstrated multiple rounded small cells with a Ki67 level around 30%, suggesting a malignant metastatic neuroendocrine tumor of unknown etiology. Conclusion: We successfully treated a 34-year-old male with a T7-T9 malignant spinal dumbbell neuroendocrine tumor of unknown etiology utilizing a decompressive laminectomy.

The ischemia/reperfusion mechanism is believed to be responsible for parenchymal damage caused by temporary hypoperfusion and worsened by the subsequent attempt of reperfusion. This represents a true challenge for physicians of several fields, including neurosurgeons. A limited number of papers have shed the light on a rare pathologic condition that affects patients experiencing an unexplained neurologic deficit after spine surgery, the so-called "white cord syndrome." This entity is believed to be caused by an "ischemia/reperfusion" injury on the spinal cord, documented by a postoperative intramedullary hyperintensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging sequences. To date, the cases of white cord syndrome reported in literature mostly refer to cervical spine surgery. However, the analysis of several reviews focusing on spine surgery outcome suggests postoperative neurologic deficits of new onset could be charged to a mechanism of ischemia/reperfusion, even if the physiopathology of this event is seldom explored or at least discussed. The same neuroradiologic finding can suggest mechanical damage due to inappropriate surgical manipulation. On this purpose, we performed a systematic review of the literature with the aim to identify and analyze all the factors potentially contributing to ischemic/reperfusion damage of the spinal cord that may potentially complicate any spinal surgery, without distinction between cervical or thoracic segments. Finally, we believe that postoperative neurologic deficit after spinal surgery constituting the "white cord syndrome" could be under-reported; both neurosurgeons and patients should be fully aware of this rare but potentially devasting complication burdening cervical and thoracic spine surgery.

Racist and discriminatory federal, state, and local housing policies significantly contribute to disparities in cardiovascular disease incidence and mortality for individuals that self-identify as Black or African American. Here we highlight three key housing policies - "redlining," zoning, and the construction of highways - which have wrought a powerful, sustained, and destructive impact on cardiovascular health in Black/African American communities. Redlining and highway construction policies have restricted access to quality health care, increased exposure to carcinogens such as PM2.5, and increased exposure to extreme heat. At the root of these policy decisions are longstanding, toxic societal factors including racism, segregation, and discrimination, which also serve to perpetuate racial inequities in cardiovascular health. Here, we review these societal and structural factors and then link them with biological processes such as telomere shortening, allostatic load, oxidative stress, and tissue inflammation. Lastly, we focus on the impact of inflammation on the immune system and the molecular mechanisms by which the inflamed immune microenvironment promotes the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. We propose that racial residential segregation and discrimination increases tissue inflammation and cytokine production, resulting in dysregulated immune signaling, which promotes plaque formation and cardiovascular disease. This framework has the power to link structural racism not only to cardiovascular disease, but also to cancer.

BACKGROUND: International and national oncology societies had released recommendations in favor of COVID-19 vaccination in cancer patients. In the context of the national vaccination campaign targeting the so called extremely vulnerable, we aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of the mRNA vaccines in a cohort of 623 patients. METHODS: Between March 26 and April 04, 2021, the Pfizer and BioNTech BNT162b2 mRNA and the Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccines were given as a two-dose prime-boost regimen. Starting on September 25th 2021 a third dose was offered to patients in whom a suboptimal immunogenicity with COVID-19 vaccination could be expected. Safety assessments were performed by phone call 7 days after each dose. Electronic health records were accessed to review demographic information, disease history, treatment detail, and outcome events of participants patients'. FINDINGS: No toxicities were reported in 63.7%, 54%, and in 48.7% patients with cancer after each dose. Mild-to-moderate pain at the injection site was the most commonly adverse event. After the second dose, 46% of the 610 patients reported toxicity, with more systemic side-effects observed. Fever was reported in 45% of patients, with a temperature ≥ 38 °C in 21.4% of them. Of the 335 patients receiving a third vaccine dose, 51% reported toxicity, with 13% of patients reporting more than one effect. Logistic regression analysis reported mixed results, with limited variables or categories reporting a significant odd ratio. The type of vaccine reported a significant value at first dose (OR = 0.12; CI 0.52, 0.26; p = 0.00). Thirty-four cases of COVID-19 infection were reported with only one patient requiring a short-term hospitalization for monitoring. INTERPRETATION: The safety profile of the mRNA vaccines does not raise any specific concerns and support prioritization of vaccination for cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Low-density neutrophils (LDN) are increased in several inflammatory diseases and may also play a role in the low-grade chronic inflammation associated with obesity. Here we explored their role in obesity, determined their gene signatures, and assessed the effect of bariatric surgery. METHODS: We compared the number, function, and gene expression profiles of circulating LDN in morbidly obese patients (MOP, n=27; body mass index (BMI) > 40 Kg/m2) and normal-weight controls (NWC, n=20; BMI < 25 Kg/m2) in a case-control study. Additionally, in a prospective longitudinal study, we measured changes in the frequency of LDN after bariatric surgery (n=36) and tested for associations with metabolic and inflammatory parameters. FINDINGS: LDN and inflammatory markers were significantly increased in MOP compared to NWC. Transcriptome analysis showed increased neutrophil-related gene expression signatures associated with inflammation, neutrophil activation, and immunosuppressive function. However, LDN did not suppress T cells proliferation and produced low levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Circulating LDN in MOP significantly decreased after bariatric surgery in parallel with BMI, metabolic syndrome, and inflammatory markers. INTERPRETATION: Obesity increases LDN displaying an inflammatory gene signature. Our results suggest that LDN may represent a neutrophil subset associated with chronic inflammation, a feature of obesity that has been previously associated with the appearance and progression of co-morbidities. Furthermore, bariatric surgery, as an efficient therapy for severe obesity, reduces LDN in circulation and improves several components of the metabolic syndrome supporting its recognized anti-inflammatory and beneficial metabolic effects. Abstract Introduction: Aminoglycoside-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) is a pathology closely linked to oxidative and inflammatory reactions. Taking into account the previous reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of D-005, a lipid extract obtained from Cuban palm Acrocomia crispa (Arecaceae) fruits, this work aimed to evaluate the effects of D-005 on kanamycin-induced AKI. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 7 groups: negative control (vehicle, Tween 65/H2O) and six groups treated with kanamycin to induce AKI: positive control (vehicle), D-005 (25, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) and grape seed extract (GSE, 200 mg/kg). D-005, vehicle, and GSE oral treatments were administered once daily for seven days, 1 h before kanamycin (500 mg/kg, i.p.). Serum uric acid and urea concentrations, renal histopathology, and oxidative markers (malondialdehyde (MDA), sulfhydryl (SH) groups, and catalase (CAT) activity) were assessed. Results: D-005 significantly reduced uric acid and urea levels, starting from D-005 100 mg/kg. Histopathologically, D-005, at all the tested doses, protected renal parenchyma structures (glomeruli, proximal tubules, and interstitium). These findings were accompanied by a significant reduction of MDA and SH group concentrations as well as restoration of CAT activity. The highest percentages of inhibition were obtained with the dose of 400 mg/kg. GSE, the reference substance, also prevented kanamycin-induced biochemical and histopathological changes, as well as reduced MDA and SH groups and restored CAT activity. Conclusion: The administration of repeated oral doses of D-005 significantly protected against kanamycin-induced AKI, which could be associated with the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of this extract.


Resumo Introdução: Lesão renal aguda induzida por aminoglicosídeos é uma patologia intimamente ligada a reações oxidativas e inflamatórias. Considerando efeitos antioxidantes e anti-inflamatórios relatados anteriormente do D-005, um extrato lipídico de frutos da palmeira cubana Acrocomia crispa (Arecaceae), este trabalho avaliou efeitos do D-005 na LRA induzida por canamicina. Métodos: Dividiu-se ratos Wistar machos em 7 grupos: controle negativo (veículo, Tween 65/H2O) e seis grupos tratados com canamicina para induzir LRA: controle positivo (veículo), D-005 (25, 100, 200, 400 mg/kg) e extrato de semente de uva (ESU, 200 mg/kg). D-005, veículo, e tratamentos orais com ESU foram administrados uma vez por dia durante sete dias, 1 h antes da canamicina (500 mg/kg, i.p.). Avaliou-se concentrações séricas de ácido úrico e ureia, histopatologia renal e marcadores oxidativos (malondialdeído (MDA), grupos sulfidrila (SH), atividade de catalase (CAT)). Resultados: D-005 reduziu significativamente níveis de ácido úrico e ureia, partindo de D-005 100 mg/kg. Histopatologicamente, D-005, em todas as doses testadas, protegeu estruturas do parênquima renal (glomérulos, túbulos proximais e interstício). Estes achados foram acompanhados por uma redução significativa das concentrações de MDA e grupo SH, e pela restauração da atividade CAT. As maiores porcentagens de inibição foram obtidas com a dose de 400 mg/kg. ESU, a substância de referência, também evitou alterações bioquímicas e histopatológicas induzidas por canamicina, reduziu MDA e grupos SH e restaurou atividade CAT. Conclusão: A administração de doses orais repetidas de D-005 protegeu significativamente contra LRA induzida por canamicina, que pode estar associada aos efeitos antioxidantes e anti-inflamatórios deste extrato.

Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) is becoming progressively more common during brain tumor surgery. We present data from our case series of brain tumor surgery performed with the aid of IOUS in order to identify IOUS advantages and crucial aspects that may improve the management of neurosurgical procedures for brain tumors. From January 2021 to September 2021, 17 patients with different brain tumors underwent brain tumor surgery aided by the use of IOUS. During surgery, the procedure was supported by the use of multiples ultrasonographic modalities in addition to standard B-mode: Doppler, color Doppler, elastosonography, and contrast-enhanced intraoperative ultrasound (CEUS). In selected cases, the use of IOUS during surgical procedure was combined with neuronavigation and the use of intraoperative fluorescence by the use of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA). In one patient, a preoperative ultrasound evaluation was performed through a former iatrogenic skull defect. This study confirms the role of IOUS in maximizing the EOR, which is strictly associated with postoperative outcome, overall survival (OS), and patient's quality of life (QoL). The combination of ultrasound advanced techniques such as Doppler, color Doppler, elastosonography, and contrast-enhanced intraoperative ultrasound (CEUS) is crucial to improve surgical effectiveness and patient's safety while expanding surgeon's view.

Objective: This mixed-methods study aimed to explore the role of externalizing traits in moderating the relationship between COVID-19 risk perception and vaccine hesitancy in patients diagnosed with cancer. A community-based participatory approach - comprising a preliminary qualitative inquiry and a subsequent cross-sectional research - was used to promote effective vaccination campaigns. Method: 12 people diagnosed with cancer and 7 cancer professionals were recruited for the qualitative inquiry, 356 people either under cancer treatment or in follow-up care for the cross-sectional research.A phenomenological analysis explored the transcripts of two focus groups. The cross-sectional research tested the hypothesis emerged during the previous qualitative inquiry through self-reported questionnaires and moderated regression. Results: Phenomenological analysis suggested a pivotal role of externalizing traits in vaccine hesitancy. Moderated regression revealed how the association between risk perception and vaccine hesitancy is moderated by externalizing traits, even when controlled for treatment adherence. Conclusions: In the present study we found a stronger relationship between risk perception and vaccine hesitancy for patients with higher levels of externalizing traits. We suggest that vaccination campaigns should be personality-informed to offer individualized and effective solutions. Patients with externalizing traits may cope dysfunctionally with vaccination campaigns.

Flow cytometry allows the multiparameter analysis of heterogeneous cell populations and is an essential tool for detecting and characterizing different cell populations from peripheral blood and dissociated tissues. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are a heterogeneous and plastic group of myeloid precursors with immune-suppressive capacity, which are a characteristic feature of chronic inflammation, such as cancer. The optimal measurement of MDSC levels could be used as a biomarker for clinicians for prognosis and/or management and for researchers to track and understand the role of MDSC in different pathological diseases.The criteria for defining MDSC include phenotypic surface markers, but ideally should also include the functional immunosuppressive effect on T cells, and, if possible, assessing the main biochemical and molecular features. Two major functional mechanisms to suppress T cell responses are the production of arginase-1 and reactive oxygen species (ROS) molecules. Here is presented a nine-parameter seven-color flow cytometric assay to identify and quantify MDSC from both peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and dissociated tissue (e.g., tumor) by using fluorescence-tagged antibodies against surface markers. Also, the intracellular levels of arginase-1 and superoxide (O2-) content were performed to potentially distinguish their functional status.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to highlight the psychological aspects involved in patients with advanced melanoma and to describe the differences between subjects who are positive and negative for the BRAFv600e genetic mutation, a variable that leads to a different medical approach to cancer therapy. The hypothesis is that following knowledge of the genetic mutation and the therapeutic possibilities inherent to it, mutation positive patients (BRAF+) exhibit fewer negative psychological reactions than negative patients (BRAF-) at the time of diagnosis. METHODS: The tests used (SF-12, MHQ) were administered at the time of diagnosis and after three months. RESULTS: The main findings suggest a greater impairment of quality of life at T1 than at T0, regardless of the mutation; BRAF mutated patients show more favorable scores at diagnosis and a reversal of the trend at three months after diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained, in line with the literature under review, show a significant general psychological distress in the present oncological sample, suggesting the importance of a psychological, as well as medical, care of the patient and the family.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) is becoming more and more adopted in neurosurgery, since it has been associated to greater extent of resection (EOR) and to gross total resection (GTR) during brain tumor surgery. IOUS main limitations are spatial resolution, width and orientation of the field of view and scan quality, which are operator-dependent. Furthermore, most neurosurgeons are not confident with this technique, which needs a long learning curve in order to identify and interpret anatomic structures. OBJECTIVE: To describe an effective procedure to take advantages of both IOUS and neuronavigation in case of lack of a navigated ultrasound system. METHODS: We propose a reliable "indirect-navigated" technique which is based on the optical tracking of un-navigated IOUS probe by the use of a multipurpose passive tracker and a proper configuration of common neuronavigation system. RESULTS: Navigated IOUS is not available in all neurosurgical operating rooms but ultrasound systems are common tools in many hospital facilities and neuronavigation systems are common in almost all the neurosurgical operating rooms. The proposed indirect-navigated technique shows some paramount advantages: since almost all the neurosurgical operating rooms are provided with a neuronavigation system, the only tool needed is the ultrasonography. Therefore, this procedure is largely accessible and costless, reliable, and may improve the neurosurgeon's ability in ultrasonographic anatomy. CONCLUSION: This technique is based on the coplanar and coupled use of both un-navigated IOUS probe and standard optical neuronavigation, in order to allow the intraoperative navigation of IOUS images when a navigated ultrasound system is not available.

Introducción: La diabetes mellitus tipo 1 es una enfermedad autoinmunitaria que se relaciona con alteraciones tiroideas. Objetivo: Describir la relación que existe entre diabetes mellitus tipo 1 y enfermedad tiroidea autoinmune. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión de la literatura nacional e internacional de los últimos 15 años en bases de datos, en español y en inglés. Se utilizaron las siguientes palabras clave: diabetes mellitus tipo 1, autoinmunidad, enfermad tiroidea autoinmune, disfunción tiroidea y anticuerpos antitiroideos. Análisis e integración de la información: La alteración más frecuente es el hipotiroidismo subclínico y se presenta con mayor frecuencia en el sexo femenino, por lo que se sugiere realizar periódicamente el perfil tiroideo a estos pacientes. Conclusiones: Se debe tener en cuenta en la práctica clínica estas implicaciones para brindar un tratamiento oportuno, mejorar complicaciones derivadas como las enfermedades cardiovasculares y disminuir las cifras de morbilidad y mortalidad(AU)


Introduction: Type 1 diabetes mellitus is an autoimmune disease that is related to thyroid abnormalities. Objective: Describe the relationship between type 1 diabetes mellitus and autoimmune thyroid disease. Methods: A review of the national and international literature of the last 15 years was carried out in databases, in Spanish and in English. The following keywords were used: type 1 diabetes mellitus, autoimmune, autoimmune thyroid disease, thyroid dysfunction and antithyroid antibodies. Analysis and integration of information: The most common alteration is subclinical hypothyroidism and it occurs most often in the female sex, so it is suggested to periodically perform the thyroid profile to these patients. Conclusions: These implications should be taken into account in clinical practice to provide timely treatment, improve complications such as cardiovascular disease and reduce morbidity and mortality figures(AU)
