RESUMO

Metastatic cancer cells traverse constricted spaces that exert forces on their nucleus and the genomic contents within. Cancerous tumors are highly heterogeneous and not all cells within them can achieve such a feat. Here, we investigated what initial genome architecture characteristics favor the constricted migratory ability of cancer cells and which arise only after passage through multiple constrictions. We identified a cell surface protein (ITGB4) whose expression correlates with increased initial constricted migration ability in human melanoma A375 cells. Sorting out this subpopulation allowed us to identify cellular and nuclear features that pre-exist and favor migration, as well as alterations that only appear after cells have passed through constrictions. We identified specific genomic regions that experienced altered genome spatial compartment profiles only after constricted migration. Our study reveals 3D genome structure contributions to both selection and induction mechanisms of cell fate change during cancer metastasis.

Kojic acid (KA) has gained significant attention due to its widespread use in the food and cosmetics industries. However, concerns about its potential carcinogenic effects have heightened the need for sensitive detection methods. This study introduces a fluorescence-based optical sensor for the quantification of KA in food samples, utilizing fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) synthesized from pomegranate peel via a hydrothermal method. The Stern-Volmer plot demonstrated a linear response for KA in the range of 120 to 1200 µM, with a Pearson correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9999 and. The sensor exhibited a detection limit of 30 ± 0.04 µM and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 90 ± 0.14 µM. Application of the developed method to soy sauce and vinegar samples yielded accurate KA determinations, with recoveries of 103.11 ± 0.96% and 104.45 ± 2.15%, respectively. These findings highlight the potential of the proposed sensor for practical applications in food quality and safety assessment, offering valuable insights into the presence of KA in food products.

BACKGROUND: Isolated tumours affecting the coccyx are infrequent, with only a handful of documented cases in the literature. Herein, we highlight the most extensive consecutive case series involving various isolated coccyx tumours with varied clinical presentations and imaging features. METHODS: A retrospective search of our tertiary Orthopaedic oncology institute's oncology and Radiology database [Radiology Information System, Picture Archiving and Communication System, and Computerised Radiology Information System] for the keyword "Coccyx" and "Tumour" was performed over 15 years (between December 2007 and August 2022). Data collected was correlated with local histopathology and laboratory records. Patient demographics, clinical characteristics, and complementary imaging findings were recorded for analysis. RESULTS: One hundred and three lesions originating in the coccyx with a mean age of 62 years (range 25-90 years) were identified. There was a male preponderance with 59 male and 44 female patients (1.3:1.0). The most typical tumour noted was chordoma. Other lesions included a dermoid cyst, a myxopapillary ependymoma, a notochordal remnant, an osteochondroma, an Ewing sarcoma, and a teratoma. CONCLUSION: Our analysis suggests that most of the tumours involving coccyx are chordomas with a few rarely encountered benign and malignant tumours. Radiological imaging plays a vital role in characterising isolated tumours affecting the coccyx and guiding appropriate patient management. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: This is the largest reported series of coccygeal tumours. Chordoma is the commonest coccygeal tumour. Patients with unexplained coccydynia should undergo detailed investigations, preferably with cross-sectional imaging.

Understanding alignment and gap balancing in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) can be challenging for trainee and experienced orthopedic surgeons. Traditional learning methods may not effectively translate to real-life scenarios. The advent of advanced technologies like robotic surgery and navigation systems has revolutionized intraoperative understanding of gap balancing techniques. This trial aims to investigate the effectiveness of robotic TKA planning software in educating trainees about alignment and ligament balancing. We hypothesize that a single session with the software will significantly enhance trainees' understanding of these techniques. This UK-based single-center, two-arm, group parallel randomized controlled trial was conducted during a national robotic arthroplasty symposium. It aims to evaluate the effect of robotic knee arthroplasty software training on understanding TKA alignment and gap balancing principles using Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). The MCQ test was crafted based on established guidelines from a different institution with expert consensus in the field. Our study revealed that baseline knowledge of gap balancing and alignment principles was generally low among all participants. However, the intervention group, which received comprehensive robotic software training, demonstrated a significant improvement in their MCQ scores compared to the control group, which did not undergo the training. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that robotic arthroplasty software training significantly improves the understanding of TKA alignment and balancing principles among orthopedic trainees. Antibiotic overuse in poultry feeds has disastrous implications; consequently, long-term alternatives must be developed. As a result, the current study aims to assess the impact of Aspergillus niger filtrate (ANF) high in organic acids grown on agro-industrial residue of faba bean (AIRFB) on quail diet, as well as their influence on bird productivity, digestion, carcass yield, blood chemistry, and intestinal microbiota. A total of 240 Japanese quails (aged 7 d) were used in this study, divided equally among 5 experimental groups with 48 quails each. Group 1 (G1) received a basal diet without any ANF, group 2 (G2) received a basal diet supplemented with 0.5 mL ANF/kg diet, group 3 (G3) received a basal diet supplemented with 1.0 mL ANF/kg diet, group 4 (G4) received a basal diet supplemented with 1.5 mL ANF/kg diet, and group 5 (G5) received a basal diet supplemented with 2 mL ANF/kg diet. The performance parameters were monitored at 1 to 3, 3 to 5, and 1 to 5 wk. Adding ANF increased body weight at 3 and 5 wk, as well as body weight gain at 1 to 3, 3 to 5, and 1 to 5 wk, compared to the control diet. The ANF fed quails had the highest feed conversion ratio compared to the control group. The addition of ANF to the quail diet had no effect on the weight of the carcass, gizzard, heart, liver, giblets, or dressing; however, it did lower triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, and very low-density lipoprotein while increasing high-density lipoprotein levels. The quail groups that received ANF had enhanced immunological indices such as IgG, IgM, IgA, and lysozymes. It also increased the levels of superoxide dismutase and total antioxidant contents, as well as catalase, and digestive enzymes such as protease, amylase, and lipase. However, it lowered the blood MDA levels compared to control. It has been demonstrated that the total gut microbiota, Escherichia coli, total coliforms, and the population of Salmonella are all reduced in ANF-fed quails. Histological examination of ANF quails' liver and intestinal sections revealed normal hepatic parenchyma, typical leaf-like intestinal villi, and comparatively short and frequently free lumina. In conclusion, Japanese quail showed improvements in performance, digestive enzymes, antioxidant indices, immunity, and capacity to reduce intestinal pathogenic bacteria after consuming diet supplemented with ANF.

Polyphenols, including phenolics, alkaloids, and terpenes, are secondary metabolites that are commonly found in fruits, vegetables, and beverages, such as tea, coffee, wine, chocolate, and beer. These compounds have gained considerable attention and market demand because of their potential health benefits. However, their application is limited due to their low absorption rates and reduced tissue distribution efficiency. Engineering polyphenol-protein complexes or conjugates can enhance the antioxidant properties, bioavailability, and stability of polyphenols and improve digestive enzyme hydrolysis, target-specific delivery, and overall biological functions. Complex polyphenols, such as melanin, tannins, and ellagitannins, can promote gut microbiota balance, bolster antioxidant defense, and improve overall human health. Despite these benefits, the safety of polyphenol complexes must be thoroughly evaluated before their use as functional food additives or supplements. This review provides a detailed overview of the types of macromolecular polyphenols, their chemical composition, and their role in food enrichment. The mechanisms by which complex polyphenols act as antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer agents have also been discussed.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a widely abundant spice, known for its aroma and pungent flavor. It contains several bioactive compounds and offers a wide range of health benefits to humans, including those pertaining to nutrition, physiology, and medicine. Therefore, garlic is considered as one of the most effective disease-preventive diets. Many in vitro and in vivo studies have reported the sulfur-containing compounds, allicin and ajoene, for their effective anticancer, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, immune-boosting, and cardioprotective properties. As a rich natural source of bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, saponins, tannins, linalool, geraniol, phellandrene, ß-phellandrene, ajoene, alliin, S-allyl-mercapto cysteine, and ß-phellandrene, garlic has many therapeutic applications and may play a role in drug development against various human diseases. In the current review, garlic and its major bioactive components along with their biological function and mechanisms of action for their role in disease prevention and therapy are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: The waiting list for elective surgery in England recently reached over 7.8 million people and waiting time targets have been missed since 2010. The high-volume low complexity (HVLC) surgical hubs programme aims to tackle the backlog of patients awaiting elective surgery treatment in England. This study will evaluate the impact of HVLC surgical hubs on productivity, patient care and the workforce. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This 4-year project consists of six interlinked work packages (WPs) and is informed by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. WP1: Mapping current and future HVLC provision in England through document analysis, quantitative data sets (eg, Hospital Episodes Statistics) and interviews with national service leaders. WP2: Exploring the effects of HVLC hubs on key performance outcomes, primarily the volume of low-complexity patients treated, using quasi-experimental methods. WP3: Exploring the impact and implementation of HVLC hubs on patients, health professionals and the local NHS through approximately nine longitudinal, multimethod qualitative case studies. WP4: Assessing the productivity of HVLC surgical hubs using the Centre for Health Economics NHS productivity measure and Lord Carter's operational productivity measure. WP5: Conducting a mixed-methods appraisal will assess the influence of HVLC surgical hubs on the workforce using: qualitative data (WP3) and quantitative data (eg, National Health Service (NHS) England's workforce statistics and intelligence from WP2). WP6: Analysing the costs and consequences of HVLC surgical hubs will assess their achievements in relation to their resource use to establish value for money. A patient and public involvement group will contribute to the study design and materials. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study has been approved by the East Midlands-Nottingham Research Ethics Committee 23/EM/0231. Participants will provide informed consent for qualitative study components. Dissemination plans include multiple academic and non-academic outputs (eg, Peer-reviewed journals, conferences, social media) and a continuous, feedback-loop of findings to key stakeholders (eg, NHS England) to influence policy development. Robotic-assisted TKA (RATKA) is a rapidly emerging technique that has been shown to improve precision and accuracy in implant alignment in TKA. Robotic-assisted TKA (RATKA) uses computer software to create a three-dimensional model of the patient's knee. Different types of preoperative imaging, including radiographs and CT scans, are used to create these models, each with varying levels of radiation exposure. This study aims to determine the radiation dose associated with each type of imaging used in RATKA, to inform patients of the potential risks. A retrospective search of our clinical radiology and arthroplasty database was conducted to identify 140 knees. The patients were divided into three groups based on the type of preoperative imaging they received: (1) CT image-based MAKO Protocol, (2) Antero-posterior long leg alignment films (LLAF), (3) standard AP, lateral, and skyline knee radiographs. The dose of CT imaging technique for each knee was measured using the dose-length product (DLP) with units of mGycm2, whereas the measurement for XRAY images was with the dose area product (DAP) with units of Gycm2. The mean radiation dose for patients in the CT (MAKO protocol) image-based group was 1135 mGy.cm2. The mean radiation dose for patients in the LLAF group was 3081 Gycm2. The mean radiation dose for patients undergoing knee AP/lateral and skyline radiographs was the lowest of the groups, averaging 4.43 Gycm2. Through an ANOVA and post hoc analysis, the results between groups was statistically significant. In this study, we found a significant difference in radiation exposure between standard knee radiographs, LLAF and CT imaging. Nonetheless, the radiation dose for all groups is still within acceptable safety limits.

Background: The loss of soft tissue coverage of tendons is a challenging reconstructive problem after acute hand trauma. Subsequent tendon adhesions and the loss of range of movement in addition to the poor aesthetic outcome and donor site scarring should be avoided when deciding the plan of management. Pelnac is one of the commonly used skin substitutes in reconstructive surgery that can be used for coverage of exposed tendons, but the postoperative functional outcome needs to be addressed in detail. Methods: Twenty-six patients with acute isolated tendon injuries distal to the wrist joint were included. Two-stage reconstructive procedures were performed; the first one was the application of Pelnac. The second stage was carried out after the complete integration of Pelnac via the application of a split-thickness graft. The function outcome assesses the return of the normal range of motion to the affected hand and the QuickDASH score questionnaire. The aesthetic outcome was assessed using the Vancouver scar scale. Results: The Pelnac was integrated in 100% of cases, with complete grafts taken in 22 of 26 patients. The mean QuickDASH score was 20.5 ±â€…15.7, and mean Vancouver scar scale was 3.53 ±â€…3.2. The full range of motion returned in 22 of 26 patients. Conclusions: Using Pelnac to cover the exposed hand tendons in an acute setting is a convenient and efficient procedure with minimal morbidity. It can offer a good option for their coverage with preservation of hand function and acceptable aesthetic outcome.

PURPOSE: To compare refractive outcomes after transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (tPRK) and combined phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK-PRK) procedure using two different excimer laser platforms for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism. METHODS: In this retrospective multicenter study, we compared the results of two different PRK methods. The first group received a tPRK treatment with the Amaris750 excimer laser (Schwind eye-tech solutions). The second group received a combined PTK-PRK treatment with the MEL90 excimer laser (Carl Zeiss). Only healthy eyes with no previous surgery and a spherical equivalent (SE) of -1 to -8 diopters (D) were included. Preoperative spherical equivalent (SE), age, and sex were matched among the two groups. All treatments were performed by the same surgeon in different clinics. This study was approved by the local Ethics Committee (No. 2022-1980). RESULTS: We included 154 eyes of 86 patients in our study. There was no difference in predictability of SE between the two groups. Efficacy and safety indices were equally high in both groups. Similarly, no significant differences were seen in change of higher order aberrations (HOA) between the two groups (p > 0.05). No complications occurred. CONCLUSION: Both investigated methods provide safe and effective refractive results. The combination of PTK with PRK may be a suitable option to the already used one-step tPRK for the correction of myopia.

BACKGROUND: The rise of robotics in orthopaedic training, driven by the demand for better training outcomes and patient care, presents specific challenges for junior trainees due to its novelty and steep learning curve. This paper explores how orthopaedic trainees perceive and adopt robotic-assisted lower limb arthroplasty. METHODS: The study utilised the UTUAT model questionnaire as the primary data collection tool, employing targeted questions on a five-point Likert scale to efficiently gather responses from a large number of participants. Data analysis was conducted using partial least squares (PLS), a well-established method in previous technology acceptance research. RESULT: The findings indicate a favourable attitude amongst trainees towards adopting robotic technology in orthopaedic training. They acknowledge the potential advantages of improved surgical precision and patient outcomes through roboticassisted procedures. Social factors, including the views of peers and mentors, notably influence trainees' decision-making. However, the availability of resources and expert mentors did not appear to have a significant impact on trainees' intention to use robotic technology. CONCLUSION: The study contributes to the understanding of factors influencing trainees' interest in robotic surgery and emphasises the importance of creating a supportive environment for its adoption.

The development of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms prompted the investigation of possible antibiotic substitutes. As a result, the purpose of the current study is to assess the effect of dietary Spirulina platensis extract as an antibiotic alternative on Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) growth, antioxidant status, blood parameters, and cecal microorganisms. There was a total of 150 Japanese quails used in this study, divided equally among 5 experimental groups (10 birds per group with 3 replicates): group 1 (G1) received a basal diet without any S. platensis extract, group 2 (G2) received a basal diet supplemented with 1 mL S. platensis extract/kg, group 3 (G3) received a basal diet supplemented with 2 mL S. platensis extract/kg, group 4 (G4) received a basal diet supplemented with 3 mL S. platensis extract/kg, and group 5 (G5) received a basal diet supplemented with 4 mL S. platensis extract/kg from d 7 until d 35. The results showed that compared to the control birds in G1, Japanese quail supplemented with 4 mL of S. platensis extract/kg of diet (G5) had significantly better live body weight, body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, digestive enzymes, blood parameters, liver and kidney functions, lipid profile, antioxidant profile, immunological parameters, and cecal microorganism's count. There were no significant changes in the percentage of carcasses, liver, and total giblets among all the 5 groups. Only gizzard percentage showed a significant increase in G2 compared to birds in G1. In addition, intestinal pH showed a significant drop in G2 and G5 compared to birds in G1. After cooking the quail meat, the juiciness and tenderness increased as S. platensis extract levels increased, whereas aroma and taste declined slightly as S. platensis extract levels increased. Furthermore, when a high concentration of S. platensis extract was used, the lightness of the meat reduced while its redness and yellowness increased. The disk diffusion assay showed that S. platensis extract had significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter jejuni, and Salmonella typhi, with inhibition zones ranging from 16 to 42 mm. This activity may be attributable to the volatile chemicals in S. platensis extract, of which Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol are the primary components. In the diet of Japanese quails, it is possible to draw the conclusion that the extract of S. platensis can be utilized as a feed additive and as an alternative to antibiotics.

The search for a natural antimicrobial agent is ongoing and critical because of the rise and rapid proliferation of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacteria. The current study aims to examine the effect of Paenibacillus polymyxa AM20 as an alternative antibiotic and feed additive on Indian river broiler performance, digestive enzymes, thyroid hormones, lipid profile, hepatosomatic index, immunological response, gut bacteria, and antioxidant parameters. The bacterial isolate AM20 was identified at the gene level by isolating DNA and using PCR to detect genes. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the bacterial isolate was identified as Paenibacillus polymyxa. One hundred twenty Indian river broilers (1-day old) were randomly divided into 4 groups of 10 chicks each, with 3 replicates. The control group was fed a basal diet only, while the other 3 were administered control diets supplemented with P. polymyxa at 3 concentrations: 0.5, 1, and 1.5 mg/kg. The findings revealed that all groups that received graded amounts of P. polymyxa increased all growth parameters throughout the study. P. polymyxa treatment at 1.5 mg/kg increased body gain by 9% compared to the control due to increased feed intake (P = 0.0001), growth rate (P = 0.0001), and decreased feed conversion ratio. Compared to the control group, P. polymyxa (1.5 mg/kg) enhanced kidney functions in chickens by reducing uric acid and creatinine levels (P = 0.0451). Compared to the control group, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate transaminase levels in the liver were significantly reduced at all P. polymyxa doses. Liver function values were highest for P. polymyxa at 1.5 mg/kg. Compared to the control group, those whose diets included P. polymyxa had significantly better blood cholesterol levels, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, immunological response, thyroid function, and gut microbiota. In general, broiler chickens' economic efficiency was improved by including P. polymyxa in their diet, which also improved their growth performance, carcass dressing, specific blood biochemical levels and enzymes, and the composition of the gut microbiota.

Background Periostitis ossificans (PO) are rare, benign ossifying surface lesions characterized by the centripetal ossification with osseous and soft-tissue edema. Their clinicoradiological appearances can easily mimic those of more sinister or infective surface lesion. Objective This study aimed to explore the various anatomical locations and muscle attachment at the site of PO, and evaluate the role of complementary image findings in patients presenting at our tertiary orthopaedic referral center. Patients and Methods A retrospective review of our oncology and radiology databases was undertaken to identify patients with PO reported on radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) over the past 13 years (2007-2020). Patient demographics, sites of PO, muscle attachment at the site of PO, findings on complementary imaging, and clinical management outcome were documented. Results We identified 38 patients with PO with a mean age of 24 years (range: 4-66 years). Muscle attachment was seen at the site of PO in the majority of cases (89%). The majority of PO were in the lower limb and commonly seen around the attachment of quadriceps. Deltoid attachment was commonly involved in the upper limb. Conclusion Muscle attachment is commonly seen at the site of PO, which results in stripping of the periosteum resulting in soft-tissue and osseous edema and centripetal ossification.

This review aimed to compare the potential analgesic effect of forced coughing (FC) with that of local anaesthetics (LA) or placebo during cervical biopsy. A total of 5 electronic databases-Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar-were systematically searched from inception till March 2021. Data were extracted from 6 randomised controlled trials and analysed. During cervical biopsy, the overall effect favoured LA over FC (mean difference [MD] = 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.58 to 1.54; P <0.0001). Compared to no pain management, pooled data were comparable between the two groups (MD = -1.2, 95% CI: -3.35 to 0.94; P = 0.27). Procedure duration was significantly longer in the LA group than in the FC group (MD = -1.94, 95% CI: -2.47 to -1.41; P <0.00001). FC and LA are both useful pain-lowering modalities during cervical biopsy, depending on the setting and their availability.

Intussusception in adults is a rare condition. Most frequently, intussusception involves the small intestine and, very rarely, the large intestine. In this report, we present the case of a 79-year-old male who was admitted with symptoms and signs of bowel obstruction due to an incarcerated incisional hernia (a tender irreducible incisional hernia associated with nausea and vomiting). His CT scan confirmed intussusception in his incisional hernia, showing the target sign. An emergency laparotomy, small bowel resection, and anastomosis were done. The histopathology report revealed the cause of intussusception to be a polypoid small bowel B cell lymphoma. It is necessary to excise the affected bowel segment in order to treat adult intussusception because it is commonly associated with malignant organic lesions. Computed tomography is the most sensitive imaging modality for intussusception; thus, we must consider a low threshold for a scan for patients presenting with abdominal pain.

Purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) is rich in phenolic compounds, protein, and iron. This study aims to produce functional yogurt with enhanced antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties by including safe purslane extract in yogurt formulation; the yogurt was preserved for 30 days at 4 °C, and then biochemical fluctuations were monitored. The purslane extract (PuE) had high phenolic compounds and flavonoids of 250 and 56 mg/mL, respectively. Therefore, PuE had considerable antioxidant activity, which scavenged 93% of DPPH˙, inhibited the viability of MCF-7, HCT, and HeLa cell lines by 84, 82, and 80%, respectively, and inhibited 82% of the interaction between the binding between Spike and ACE2 compared to a SARS-CoV-2 inhibitor test kit. PuE (20-40 µg/mL) inhibited the growth of tested pathogenic bacteria and Candida strains, these strains isolated from spoild yogurt and identified at gene level by PCR. Caffeic acid glucoside and catechin were the main phenolic compounds in the HPLC profile, while the main flavor compound was carvone and limonene, representing 71% of total volatile compounds (VOCs). PuE was added to rats' diets at three levels (50, 150, and 250 µg/g) compared to butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA). The body weight of the rats fed the PuE diet (250 µg/g) increased 13% more than the control. Dietary PuE in rats' diets lowered the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels by 72% and increased the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) by 36%. Additionally, liver parameters in rats fed PuE (150 µg/g) decreased aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels by 50, 43, and 25%, respectively, while TP, TA, and GSH were increased by 20, 50, and 40%, respectively, compared to BHA. Additionally, PuE acts as a kidney protector by lowering creatinine and urea. PuE was added to yogurt at three concentrations (50, 150, and 250 µg/g) and preserved for 30 days compared to the control. The yogurt's pH reduced during storage while acidity, TSS, and fat content increased. Adding PuE increased the yogurt's water-holding capacity, so syneresis decreased and viscosity increased, which was attributed to enhancing the texture properties (firmness, consistency, and adhesiveness). MDA decreased in PuE yogurt because of the antioxidant properties gained by PuE. Additionally, color parameters L and b were enhanced by PuE additions and sensorial traits, i.e., color, flavor, sugary taste, and texture were enhanced by purslane extract compared to the control yogurt. Concerning the microbial content in the yogurt, the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) count was maintained as a control. Adding PuE at concentrations of 50, 150, and 250 µg/g to the yogurt formulation can enhance the quality of yogurt.

INTRODUCTION: Grey Scale Inversion Imaging (GSII), a radiology reading software, has been utilized to improve anatomical and pathological delineation and consequently increase the diagnostic accuracy in a variety of trauma and Orthopaedic conditions. OBJECTIVE/AIM: The objective of this study was to assess whether Grey Scale Inversion Imaging (GSII) has any impact on the diagnostic accuracy and inter-observer reliability in diagnosing neck of femur fractures. METHOD: We performed a retrospective, single-centre study, to identify 50 consecutive anteroposterior (AP) pelvis radiographs of patients who presented to our unit with suspected neck of femur fractures between 2020 and 2021. The images included a combination of normal pelvic radiographs and others with features suggestive either intracapsular or extracapsular neck of femur fractures, which had been confirmed on computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or subsequent surgery. Four independent observers (two Trauma and Orthopaedics (T&O) consultants, one T&O Trainee Registrar (ST3 level) and one Trainee Senior House Officer (SHO in T&O) reviewed the images and graded each radiograph image using the Likert scale in response to the statement "there is a fracture". Following this, the same radiographs were inverted to Grey Scale Inversion Imaging (GSII) grey scale images and reassessed. RAND correlation was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Overall, observers appeared to have similar accuracy with normal radiographic imaging and with GSI sequences. CONCLUSION: Grey Scale Inversion Imaging (GSII) of digital radiographs did not affect the diagnostic accuracy of detecting neck of femur fractures in our study.
