RESUMO

PURPOSE: We compared semen quality and sperm DNA fragmentation in cancer patients who underwent sperm banking and controls who underwent sperm cryopreservation for assisted reproductive technology (ART). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 132 men, 65 cancer patients and 67 controls, were prospectively enrolled and performed sperm cryopreservation for fertility preservation from May 2019 to February 2021. Sperm quality was determined by measuring semen volume, sperm concentration, sperm motility, and sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI). Sperm quality and sperm DFI were compared in cancer patients and controls. RESULTS: The major cancers of the 65 cancer patients were leukemia (26.2%), testicular cancer (23.1%), and lymphoma (20.0%). Sperm concentration, sperm total motility, and sperm progressive motility were significantly lower in cancer patients than in controls. Sperm DFI was significantly higher in cancer patients than in controls (24.32%±15.69% vs. 19.11%±11.63%; p=0.033). After excluding 8 cancer patients who received chemotherapy before sperm banking, sperm concentration, sperm total motility, and sperm progressive motility were significantly lower in cancer patients than in controls, but there was no significant difference in sperm DFI for cancer patients and controls (23.14%±12.79% vs. 19.11%±11.63%; p=0.069). CONCLUSIONS: Sperm quality was lower in cancer patients than in controls. There was no difference in the sperm DFI of cancer patients prior to chemotherapy and men presenting for sperm cryopreservation for ART. We recommend that all men who are planning cancer therapy should be offered sperm banking prior to gonadotoxic chemotherapy as a standard of fertility preservation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the causes and clinical and laboratory features of patients with ureteritis observed on intravenous contrast-enhanced abdominopelvic computed tomography (APCT) conducted in the emergency department (ED). METHODS: All APCTs conducted in the ED from November 2017 to November 2020 were investigated for the presence of ureteritis. The incidence of ureteritis, presumed cause of ureteritis, and clinical as well as laboratory features of patients with ureteritis were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Ureteritis was observed in 422 out of 7,386 patients (5.7%) who underwent APCTs. The two main reasons for undergoing APCT in the ED were abdominal pain (49%) and infection focus workup (33%). The first major cause of ureteritis was urinary tract infection (UTI) (351 of 422, 83%). Most patients (85%) were febrile, but 208 (59%) exhibited no urinary symptoms such as dysuria, increased frequency, or residual urine sense. The second major cause of ureteritis was ureteral stones (42 of 422, 10%). Thirty-two of 42 patients (76%) had simple obstructive uropathy, while 24% of patients had a combined infection along with an obstruction. Other rare causes were malignancy and the spread of adjacent inflammation. CONCLUSION: Ureteritis was a common finding observed in 5.7% of patients who underwent APCTs at the ED, and most of them were secondary to UTIs and ureteral stones. UTIs can cause ureteritis even without typical symptoms or signs suggestive of UTI, and diagnosis without an APCT can be difficult. More liberal use of APCTs should be considered when the cause of fever is difficult to diagnose.

RESUMO

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) is known as a regulator of cellular functions, including adipogenesis and immune cell activation. The objectives of this study were to investigate the expression of PPARγ and identify the mechanism of primordial follicle activation via PPARγ modulators in mouse ovaries. We first measured the gene expression of PPARγ and determined its relationship with phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), protein kinase B (AKT1), and forkhead box O3a (FOXO3a) expression in neonatal mouse ovaries. We then incubated neonatal mouse ovaries with PPARγ modulators, including rosiglitazone (a synthetic agonist of PPARγ), GW9662 (a synthetic antagonist of PPARγ), and cyclic phosphatidic acid (cPA, a physiological inhibitor of PPARγ), followed by transplantation into adult ovariectomized mice. After the maturation of the transplanted ovaries, primordial follicle growth activation, follicle growth, and embryonic development were evaluated. Finally, the delivery of live pups after embryo transfer into recipient mice was assessed. While PPARγ was expressed in ovaries from mice of all ages, its levels were significantly increased in ovaries from 20-day-old mice. In GW9662-treated ovaries in vitro, PTEN levels were decreased, AKT was activated, and FOXO3a was excluded from the nuclei of primordial follicles. After 1 month, cPA-pretreated, transplanted ovaries produced the highest numbers of oocytes and polar bodies, exhibited the most advanced embryonic development, and had the greatest blastocyst formation rate compared to the rosiglitazone- and GW9662-pretreated groups. Additionally, the successful delivery of live pups after embryo transfer into the recipient mice transplanted with cPA-pretreated ovaries was confirmed. Our study demonstrates that PPARγ participates in primordial follicle activation and development, possibly mediated in part by the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Although more studies are required, adapting these findings for the activation of human primordial follicles may lead to treatments for infertility that originates from poor ovarian reserves.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Accurate and timely diagnosis of acute surgical disease in pregnant patient is challenging. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most accurate modality to diagnose acute appendicitis in pregnant patients, it is often used as a last resort because of high cost and long scan time. We performed this study to analyze differential diagnoses of appendix MRI and to investigate if there are any blood tests that can predict surgical condition in pregnant patients. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on 46 pregnant patients who underwent non-enhanced appendix MRI in suspicion of acute appendicitis from 2010 to 2016. Differential diagnoses of appendix MRI were analyzed and blood tests were compared between those who had surgical and non-surgical disease. RESULTS: Appendix MRI differentiated two surgical disease; acute appendicitis and ovarian torsion; and various non-surgical conditions such as uterine myoma, hydronephrosis, ureterolithiasis and diverticulitis among clinically suspected acute appendicitis in pregnancy. The diagnostic accuracy of MRI for acute appendicitis in this study was 93.5%. Patients who had surgical disease showed significantly higher WBC count (≥11,000/mm3), proportion of neutrophils in the WBC (≥79.9%), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR≥6.4), levels of C-reactive protein (CRP≥1.82 mg/dL) and bilirubin (≥0.66 mg/dL) than those who had non-surgical disease. CONCLUSION: MRI can reliably differentiate surgical conditions and several blood tests (WBC, proportion of neutrophils in the WBC, NLR, CRP, bilirubin) can help anticipate acute surgical condition among pregnant patients suspected to have acute appendicitis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the ability of the delta neutrophil index (DNI) to predict histologically normal appendicitis preoperatively and to differentiate between simple and complicated appendicitis. METHODS: The data from 650 patients were divided into positive and negative appendectomy groups (histologically normal appendicitis). The patients in the acute appendicitis group were further sub-divided into simple and complicated appendicitis groups. RESULTS: The DNI was significantly higher in the positive group than in the negative appendectomy group (0.4 vs. -0.4, p < 0.001) as well as in the complicated group compared with that in the simple appendicitis group (1.2 vs. 0.3, p < 0.001). The DNI independently predicted a positive appendectomy and an acute complicated appendicitis in multivariate logistic regression analysis [odds ratio (OR) 2.62, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.11~6.16), p = 0.028 and odds ratio (OR) 4.10, 95% confidence interval (CI) (2.94~5.80), p < 0.001]. The optimum cut-off for a positive appendectomy and acute complicated appendicitis were 0.2 [area under curve (AUC) 0.709] and 0.6 (AUC 0.727). CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that obtaining a preoperative DNI is a useful parameter to aid in the diagnosis of histologically normal appendicitis and to differentiate between simple and complicated appendicitis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: One hypothesis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is that long-standing snoring vibrations and hypoxia of the nerves cause a local neuropathy in the upper airway during sleep. The aim of this study was to investigate olfactory function in subjects comprising snorers and untreated subjects with OSAS, and to correlate data with polysomnographic parameters. METHODS: Sixty-nine patients were evaluated for snoring from January 2010 to December 2013. The mild group (apneahypopnea index [AHI]<15) consisted of 19 subjects, and the moderate-severe group (AHI≥15) consisted of 50 subjects. Exclusion criteria were conductive olfactory dysfunction, previous tonsil or soft palatal surgery, central sleep apnea, and medications that are known to affect peripheral nerves. Nocturnal polysomnography and olfactory function test such as Korean version of Sniffin's stick test I, II (KVSS I, II) were performed. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in body mass index, average oxygen saturation (SaO2), lowest SaO2, average snoring duration, and KVSS I, II between the two groups. AHI was related to odor threshold score, and average SaO2 was related to odor discrimination score. But, odor identification score showed no relation with AHI and average SaO2 except for age. Average SaO2 and AHI were closely related to the function of smell. CONCLUSION: Hypoxia and low nasal airflow caused by OSAS may have an effect on the olfactory function. On comparison between the two groups, patients with a high AHI, especially those with OSAS, had an olfactory dysfunction. Also, low average oxygen is the main risk factor in determining the olfactory function. In people with OSAS, the possibility of olfactory dysfunction should be considered and an olfactory function test should be performed.

RESUMO

Polyploidy is occurred by the process of endomitosis or cell fusion and usually represent terminally differentiated stage. Their effects on the developmental process were mainly investigated in the amphibian and fishes, and only observed in some rodents as mammalian model. Recently, we have established tetraploidy somatic cell nuclear transfer-derived human embryonic stem cells (SCNT-hESCs) and examined whether it could be available as a research model for the polyploidy cells existed in the human tissues. Two tetraploid hESC lines were artificially acquired by reintroduction of remained 1st polar body during the establishment of SCNT-hESC using MII oocytes obtained from female donors and dermal fibroblasts (DFB) from a 35-year-old adult male. These tetraploid SCNT-hESC lines (CHA-NT1 and CHA-NT3) were identified by the cytogenetic genotyping (91, XXXY,-6, t[2:6] / 92,XXXY,-12,+20) and have shown of indefinite proliferation, but slow speed when compared to euploid SCNT-hESCs. Using the eight Short Tendem Repeat (STR) markers, it was confirmed that both CHA-NT1 and CHA-NT3 lines contain both nuclear and oocyte donor genotypes. These hESCs expressed pluripotency markers and their embryoid bodies (EB) also expressed markers of the three embryonic germ layers and formed teratoma after transplantation into immune deficient mice. This study showed that tetraploidy does not affect the activities of proliferation and differentiation in SCNT-hESC. Therefore, tetraploid hESC lines established after SCNT procedure could be differentiated into various types of cells and could be an useful model for the study of the polyploidy cells in the tissues.

RESUMO

AIMS: To determine whether the level of plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) can predict acute kidney injury (AKI) and clinical outcomes after recovery of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study of consecutive admitted patients with ROSC after OHCA between January 2013 and March 2015. Plasma was collected within 4h of ROSC to determine the level of NGAL. Outcome variables were AKI, 30-day survival, and good neurological outcome (GNO). We evaluated the association between NGAL and outcomes. RESULTS: Fifty-four patients were included. AKI occurred in 26 (48.0%); 15 (27.7%) survived over 30 days and 8 had GNO (14.8%). NGAL was significantly lower in the group with non-AKI, 30-day survival, and GNO. To predict AKI, 30-day survival, and GNO, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for NGAL was 0.810, 0.728, and 0.875, respectively. In a logistic regression model, NGAL >189 ngml(-1) was strongly associated with AKI (odds ratio [OR] 7.01, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.89-26.01) in a multivariate model. A lower level of NGAL was strongly associated with 30-day survival (OR 6.12, 95% CI: 1.64-23.42 at NGAL <153.5 ngml(-1)) and GNO (OR 19.83, 95% CI: 2.21-178.32 at NGAL <129.5 ngml(-1)) in a univariate model, but was not significantly associated with outcomes in a multivariate model. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma NGAL is a strong predictor of AKI in patients exhibiting OHCA at ICU admission. Lower levels of NGAL are associated with greater chance of 30-day survival and GNO.

RESUMO

Patients with herpes zoster oticus (HZO) may exhibit diverse symptoms regarding cochleovestibular dysfunction. This study investigated the clinical manifestations of HZO by comparing symptoms associated with dysfunctions of the 7th and 8th cranial nerves (CN VII and VIII, respectively). This study is a retrospective case series. Eighty-one patients with HZO who had dysfunction of CN VII or VIII were included in this study. Electroneuronography (ENoG) values were compared among patient groups with facial weakness. Patients with ipsilateral facial weakness (62 of 81) were more common than those without. Among 81 patients, those with facial weakness, hearing loss, and vertigo were most common, and only 1 patient had vertigo without hearing loss or facial weakness. Most patients with vertigo also had hearing loss (28 of 30), and patients without hearing loss did not have vertigo (19 of 21). While patients with vertigo had worse ENoG values than those without vertigo, ENoG values were not significantly different between patients with and without hearing loss. In conclusion, various clinical manifestations of CN VII and VIII dysfunction are possible in patients with HZO. Patients with vertigo had worse ENoG values than those without, which may indicate that vertigo reflects more severe facial nerve degeneration in HZO patients with facial weakness.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to compare vibration-induced nystagmus (VIN) and hyperventilation-induced nystagmus (HVIN) findings in patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome with vertigo (RHS-V), sudden sensorineural hearing loss with vertigo (SSNHL-V), and vestibular neuritis (VN) during the acute stage and to address the possible lesion sites of vestibular deficit in RHS-V. STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case series study in 27 patients with SSNHL-V, 104 patients with VN, and 17 patients with RHS-V and evaluated the findings of VIN and HVIN tests. RESULTS: An abnormal VIN was observed in 91% of the patients with VN, 89% of those with SSNHL-V, and 94% of those with RHS-V, and the prevalence of abnormal VIN was not significantly different (P = .436). An abnormal HVIN was observed in 51% of the patients with VN, 22% of those with SSNHL-V, and 59% of those with RHS-V. While the prevalence of an abnormal HVIN was significantly different between SSNHL-V and VN groups (P = .007) and between SSNHL-V and RHS-V groups (P = .014), that between VN and RHS-V groups did not show a significant difference (P = .547). CONCLUSION: Since the results of HVIN in RHS-V patients were more similar to those in VN patients than those in SSNHL-V patients, a lesioned site may be more likely within the vestibular nerve than the inner ear as a cause for vestibular deficit in patients with RHS-V who show caloric canal paresis of 25% or greater.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Caudal septal deviation interrupts normal nasal breathing, due to the narrowing of the external valve area and nasal valve angle. In this study, we found a different approach for correction of caudal septal deviation with no associated deformity of the external nose. STUDY DESIGN: Individual case-control study. METHODS: The 39 patients completed questionnaires by interviews postoperatively for assessment of nasal obstruction. In addition, patients assessed the severity of their nasal symptoms (i.e., mouth breathing, mouth dryness, hyposmia, rhinorrhea, epistaxis, snoring, postnasal drip, and headache) preoperatively and postoperatively using a visual analog scale (VAS). Improvement in the treatment of nasal obstruction using a VAS and a questionnaire for subjective satisfaction were evaluated 3 months after septoplasty. To evaluate outcomes objectively, endoscopic photographs of the nasal cavity and acoustic rhinometry before and after surgery were evaluated. For comparison between preoperative and postoperative status, the Wilcoxon signed ranks test was used. RESULTS: Patients reported a significant decrease in the VAS severity of all nasal symptoms. The minimal cross-sectional area (MCA1) of the convex side after vascular constriction using acoustic rhinometry showed significant widening. Patients were divided into a turbinoplasty group and a nonturbinoplasty group, and the turbinoplasty group showed a significant increase in both the convex side and concave side in MCA1 and in the convex side in the anterior portion of the inferior turbinate. CONCLUSIONS: Endonasal septoplasty using bony batten grafting for caudal septal deviation resulted in an improvement of nasal obstruction symptoms and acoustic rhinometry components.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Following a chemical, biological, radiation and nuclear (CBRN) incident, prompt establishment of an advanced airway is required for patients with respiratory failure within the warm zone, while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). Previous studies reported that intubation attempts were prolonged, and incidence of esophageal intubation was increased with conventional Macintosh laryngoscope (McL), while wearing CBRN-PPE. Pentax-AWS (AWS), a recently introduced portable video laryngoscope, was compared with the McL to test its utility for tracheal intubation while wearing CBRN-PPE. METHODS: 31 participants performed unsuited and suited intubations on an advanced life support simulator. The sequence of intubating devices and PPE wearing were randomised. Time to complete tracheal intubation (primary end point), time to see the vocal cords, overall success rate, percentage of glottic opening, dental compression and ease of intubation were measured. RESULTS: Suited intubations required significantly longer time to complete intubation than unsuited intubations, in both McL and AWS (22.2 vs 26.4 s, 14.2 vs 18.2 s, respectively). However, suited AWS intubations required shorter time to complete tracheal intubation than unsuited McL intubations (18.2 vs 22.2 s). In secondary outcomes, moreover, suited intubations using the AWS compared favourably with unsuited intubations using the McL. CONCLUSIONS: Although the CBRN-PPE adversely affected time required to complete tracheal intubation with the AWS, suited intubations using the AWS were even superior to unsuited intubations using the McL. The AWS should be a promising device to perform tracheal intubation while wearing the CBRN-PPE.

RESUMO

Human adult stem cells are a readily available multipotent cell source that can be used in regenerative medicine. Despite many advantages, including low tumorigenicity, their rapid senescence and limited plasticity have curtailed their use in cell-based therapies. In this study, we isolated CD34/CD73-double-positive (CD34(+)/CD73(+)) testicular stromal cells (HTSCs) and found that the expression of CD34 was closely related to the cells' stemness and proliferation. The CD34(+)/CD73(+) cells grew in vitro for an extended period of time, yielding a multitude of cells (5.6×10(16) cells) without forming tumors in vivo. They also differentiated into all three germ layer lineages both in vitro and in vivo, produced cartilage more efficiently compared to bone marrow stem cells and, importantly, restored erectile function in a cavernous nerve crush injury rat model. Thus, these HTSCs may represent a promising new autologous cell source for clinical use.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether endotracheal intubation in patients with cervical spine immobilisation by a semirigid neck collar is easier using the Disposcope endoscope (DE), a new video laryngoscope, than with the Macintosh laryngoscope (ML). METHODS: Sixty-eight medical interns who participated in a training programme for endotracheal intubation using the DE and ML were recruited to the randomised crossover trial 1 week after completing the training programme. In the trial, they used both the DE and the ML to perform intubation on a manikin wearing a semirigid neck collar. The time required to view the vocal cords and to complete intubation, successful endotracheal intubation, modified Cormack-Lehane classification (CL grade) and dental injury were recorded and analysed. RESULTS: The mean (SD) time to view the vocal cords was significantly shorter with the DE than with the ML (10.0 (7.0) vs 20.8 (18.9) s; p<0.0001). There were higher rates of CL grades 1 and 2a (69.1% and 22.1%) using the DE than with the ML (10.3% and 14.7%). All 68 participants had a higher rate of successful endotracheal intubation using the DE than using the ML (68 (100%) vs 47 (69.1%); p<0.0001). It took less time to complete endotracheal intubation with the DE than with the ML (p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with cervical spine immobilisation by a semirigid neck collar, the DE may be a more effective device for endotracheal intubation than the ML.

RESUMO

Many Asians have faces with prominent zygomas, and therefore reduction malarplasty is one of the most frequently undergone surgeries in Asia, including South Korea. It is performed using various surgical approaches (external, intraoral, bicoronal or their combination). The reduction technique that is the most effective, safest and with the lowest morbidity needs to be determined. From December 2005 to January 2010, 1652 patients who wanted to undergo zygoma reduction for purely aesthetic reasons were operated on using a novel technique that we have developed (the 3S technique), which is a simple and safe surgical technique that results in only a short scar. First, under local anaesthesia, a 13- to 15-mm-long skin incision is made at each sideburn. The subperiosteal dissection is continued anteriorly all the way to the body of the zygoma. Zygoma reduction is then performed in three steps: (1) malar shaving (lateral area of the zygoma body), (2) lateral corticotomy (zygomatic arch) and (3) full-thickness osteotomy (pretubercular area of the temporomandibular joint). Next, the zygomatic arch is displaced medially with digital pressure (infracture). Finally, a Silastic drain is inserted through the incision site, skin repair is completed and a gentle compressive dressing is applied. Most of the patients were satisfied with the results of the operation. This technique provides the following advantages: (1) it is simple and safe because it is performed under only local anaesthesia; (2) only one scar is created at the sideburn; (3) no foreign bodies, such as wires or miniplates, are used; and (4) it is minimally invasive, and as such there are fewer potential complications (e.g., no cheek drooping due to a wide muscle incision or dissection, less oedema and bleeding and a short hospitalisation time). The presented technique is simpler and more effective than previously described surgical techniques for reduction malarplasty.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The traditional belief that obesity is protective against osteoporosis has been questioned. Recent epidemiologic studies show that body fat itself may be a risk factor for osteoporosis and bone fractures. Accumulating evidence suggests that metabolic syndrome and the individual components of metabolic syndrome such as hypertension, increased triglycerides, and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol are also risk factors for low bone mineral density. Using a cross sectional study design, we evaluated the associations between obesity or metabolic syndrome and bone mineral density (BMD) or vertebral fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 907 postmenopausal healthy female subjects, aged 60-79 years, were recruited from woman hospitals in Seoul, South Korea. BMD, vetebral fracture, bone markers, and body composition including body weight, body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat, and waist circumference were measured. RESULTS: After adjusting for age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, total calcium intake, and total energy intake, waist circumference was negatively related to BMD of all sites (lumbar BMD p = 0.037, all sites of femur BMD p < 0.001) whereas body weight was still positively related to BMD of all sites (p < 0.001). Percentage body fat and waist circumference were much higher in the fracture group than the non-fracture group (p = 0.0383, 0.082 respectively). Serum glucose levels were positively correlated to lumbar BMD (p = 0.016), femoral neck BMD (p = 0.0335), and femoral trochanter BMD (p = 0.0082). Serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) was positively related to femoral trochanter BMD (p = 0.0366) and was lower in the control group than the fracture group (p = 0.011). CONCLUSION: In contrast to the effect favorable body weight on bone mineral density, high percentage body fat and waist circumference are related to low BMD and a vertebral fracture. Some components of metabolic syndrome were related to BMD and a vertebral fracture.

RESUMO

Protein C is an important physiological anticoagulant factor. Protein C deficiency has been linked to venous thrombosis at unusual sites, including the cerebral and mesenteric veins. Hereditary protein C deficiency is inherited primarily as an autosomal dominant trait with incomplete penetrance. Protein C and S deficiencies are known to increase the risk of venous thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism. Testing for protein C levels and function is necessary for the detection of both type I and type II protein C deficiency. In this article, we report a case of pulmonary embolism and mesentery ischemia due to type 1 protein C deficiency.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to determine the fate of the 166Ho-chitosan complex (DW-166HC) in rats by examining its absorption, distribution and excretion after administration into the prostate. METHODS: About 100 microCi of DW-166HC [containing 0.1875 mg of Ho(NO3)3.5H2O and 0.25 mg of chitosan] was administered intraprostatically. The level of radioactivity in blood, urinary and faecal excretion, and radioactivity distribution were examined. To determine the effect of chitosan in DW-166HC, 166Ho nitrate alone [0.1875 mg of Ho(NO3)3.5H2O] was administered into the prostate of male rats, and radioactivity distribution was examined using whole-body autoradiography. RESULTS: After administration of DW-166HC into the prostate, cumulative urinary and faecal excretion over the period 0-72 h was 0.35% and 0.11%, respectively. The radioactivity at the administration site was extremely high at all time points up to 144 h (>98% of injected dose). The small amount of radioactivity which did transfer from the administration site distributed mainly to the liver, spleen, kidney cortex and bone. Compared with the DW-166HC group, the group that received 166Ho nitrate alone displayed three- to fourfold higher levels of radioactivity in the main tissues, including liver, spleen, kidney cortex and bone, at 24 h after administration (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of this study show clearly that most of the administered DW-166HC remained at the administration site. It is concluded that the chitosan complex may be used to retain 166Ho within a limited area in cancer of the prostate.
