Background: Despite lifelong and detrimental effects, the co-occurrence of health risk behaviors (HRBs) during adolescence remains understudied in low- and middle-income countries. This study examines the co-occurrence of HRBs and its correlates among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, China, and India. Methods: A multi-country cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021-2022, involving 9697 adolescents (aged 10-19 years) from eight countries, namely Burkina Faso, China, Ethiopia, India, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda. A standardized questionnaire was administered to examine five types of HRBs - physical inactivity, poor dietary habits, smoking, alcohol consumption, and risky sexual behavior. Latent class analysis was employed to identify clustering patterns among the behaviors, and logistic regression was used to identify the correlates of these patterns. Findings: Three clusters of HRBs were identified, with Cluster 1 (27.73%) characterized by the absence of any specific risky behavior, Cluster 2 (68.16%) characterized by co-occurrence of physical inactivity and poor dietary habits, and Cluster 3 (4.11%) characterized by engagement in smoking, alcohol consumption, and risky sexual behavior. Relative to Cluster 1, being in Cluster 2 was associated with being female (aOR 1.20, 95% CI 1.09-1.32), not enrolled in education (aOR 0.84, 95% CI 0.71-0.99), and not engaged in paid work (aOR 1.23, 95% CI 1.08-1.41). Compared with those Cluster 1, adolescents in Cluster 3 were less likely to be female (aOR 0.41, 95% CI 0.32-0.54), be engaged in paid work (aOR 0.54, 95% CI 0.41-0.71), more likely to be older (aOR 7.56, 95% CI 5.18-11.03), not be enrolled in educational institution (aOR 1.74, 95% CI 1.27-2.38), and more likely to live with guardians other than parents (aOR 1.56, 95% CI 1.19-2.05). Interpretation: The significant clustering patterns of HRBs among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, China, and India highlights the urgent need for convergent approaches to improve adolescent health behaviors. Early life and school-based programs aimed at promoting healthy behaviors and preventing risky and unhealthy behaviors should be prioritized to equip adolescents with the tools and skills for lifelong well-being. Background Socio-cultural considerations (such as drug availability) and psychological traits play a significant role in predicting whether a person will use drugs in the future and dependency on the drugs. Second-, third-, and fourth-hand smoking and E-cigarettes are influencing factors for the use of tobacco in college students. This study conducted research to ascertain whether there is a potential relationship between tobacco consumption and various factors, including internal and external control sites and demographics. Materials and methods Participants in the study were found by walk-up distribution at multiple campus-wide smoking places, department announcements, and on-campus advertisements. Social media and participant references were also used in this study as recruitment tools. In addition, the locus of control questionnaire also identifies if the participating individual had extrinsic or intrinsic reinforcing routines. The classification of the participating individuals into respective internal and external locus of control was in accordance with their response survey after which a statistical analysis was done. Results This study found an association between smoking on campus and reported attempts to quit. Additionally, there is a strong association (r(85) = 0.31, p < 0.01) between reported tobacco use status and cigarette use on campus. Participants' gender and smoking status also had r(85) = 0.39, p-value < 0.01 correlation. The bulk of respondents indicated that they were seniors and off-campus living concluding for 36% (n = 34) and 60% (n = 51) of the total. Twenty-seven percent (n = 24) of the respondents were first-year college students and the rest 33% (n = 29) said their parents had no college education at all or incomplete college education. Conclusion Whenever there is a strong perception of organizational support for anti-tobacco policies, and improving compliance, there is a drastic increase in cigarette cessation and a drop in tobacco usage among those who still smoke. Perceived organizational support is strongly and positively connected with cessation among the organization's members.

Flow assurance challenges associated with waxy crude oil precipitation at low ambient conditions are significant concerns for oil industries during production, transportation, and storage. Numerous methods have been employed to mitigate wax deposition and gelation issues. Since wax precipitation is temperature-sensitive, heating has emerged as a promising method to enhance oil flowability. The present work intends to examine the degelation behavior of waxy oil using rheometry, differential scanning calorimetry, and microscopy techniques. In addition, a non-isothermal flow restart simulation is performed using an in-house numerical simulator consisting of a rheological model of sol-gel transition developed in the current work. A numerical simulation of a preheated gelled pipeline demonstrates the significance of the degelation temperature. The effects of the wax concentration, initial gel temperature, and aging period on the degelation temperature are examined. The observed degelation temperature is higher than the gelation temperature, leading to thermal hysteresis. The extent of thermal hysteresis reduces with a decrease in the heating rate. The numerical simulation uses the finite volume method with variables placed on a staggered grid. The gel heated above and below the degelation temperature shows a significant variation in axial velocity profiles. However, further heating does not affect the velocity profiles. A shear banding type of effect is observed in the axial velocity profile above the degelation temperature. Heating the gelled oil to the degelation temperature instead of the wax disappearance temperature saves excessive heating energy during storage and transport operations.

School system is a promising platform for addressing all forms of malnutrition in adolescents. However, little is known about the impact of integrated school health and nutrition programmes on adolescent nutrition and educational outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This systematic review sought to characterize school-based health and nutrition interventions among adolescents in LMICs and analyze their effects on nutritional status and educational outcomes. Four databases were searched for studies evaluating school-based health and nutrition interventions for adolescents in LMICs, reporting changes in either nutritional status or educational outcomes. A narrative synthesis was used to analyze and describe the evidence. Our review included 68 articles evaluating 58 interventions, of which a third had moderate to strong methodological quality. Forty-two studies evaluated single-domain interventions, while 26 evaluated multi-component interventions. A third of all interventions were based on a theoretical framework. Three-fourths of the interventions were shorter than 11 months, which may make identifying their effect difficult. The results of the effectiveness of these interventions were mixed and inconsistent across intervention types. Sixteen out of 21 studies evaluating multi-component interventions and 12 out of 23 studies evaluating nutrition education reported improving nutritional or diet-related outcomes. One out of six studies reported positive effects on educational outcomes. Our review has identified that research needs include: a greater inclusion of theory-based approaches to guide the implementation of interventions; more studies of integrated interventions that involve parents and the wider community in LMICs; and extension of outcomes beyond nutritional status to include educational outcomes.

A major global health risk has been witnessed with the development of drug-resistant bacteria and multidrug-resistant pathogens linked to significant mortality. Coumarins are heterocyclic compounds belonging to the benzophenone class enriched in different plants. Coumarins and their derivatives have a wide range of biological activity, including antibacterial, anticoagulant, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antitumour, and enzyme inhibitory effects. In the past few years, attempts have been reported towards the optimization, synthesis, and evaluation of novel coumarin analogues as antimicrobial agents. Several coumarin-based antibiotic hybrids have been developed, and the majority of them were reported to exhibit potential antibacterial effects. In the present work, studies reported from 2016 to 2020 about antimicrobial coumarin analogues are the focus. The diverse biological spectrum of coumarins can be attributed to their free radical scavenging abilities. In addition to various synthetic strategies developed, some of the structural features include a heterocyclic ring with electron-withdrawing/donating groups conjugated with the coumarin nucleus. The suggested structure-activity relationship (SAR) can provide insight into how coumarin hybrids can be rationally improved against multidrug-resistant bacteria. The present work demonstrates molecular insights for coumarin derivatives having antimicrobial properties from the recent past. The detailed SAR outcomes will benefit towards leading optimization during the discovery and development of novel antimicrobial therapeutics.

Isatin (1H indole 2, 3-dione) is a heterocyclic, endogenous lead molecule recognized in humans and different plants. The isatin nucleus and its derivatives are owed the attention of researchers due to their diverse pharmacological activities such as anticancer, anti-TB, antifungal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, anti-HIV, and so on. Many research chemists take advantage of the gentle structure of isatins, such as NH at position 1 and carbonyl functions at positions 2 and 3, for designing biologically active analogues via different approaches. Literature surveys based on reported preclinical, clinical, and patented details confirm the multitarget profile of isatin analogues and thus their importance in the field of medicinal chemistry as a potent chemotherapeutic agent. This review represents the recent development of isatin analogues possessing potential pharmacological action in the years 2016-2020. The structure-activity relationship is also discussed to provide a pharmacophoric pattern that may contribute in the future to the design and synthesis of potent and less toxic therapeutics.

BACKGROUND: Poor nutritional status and educational outcomes are associated with adverse health consequences throughout the life course. OBJECTIVES: We examined the associations of sex, iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation, deworming, and dietary diversity with nutritional status and learning outcomes among Indian adolescents. METHODS: Data of 12 035 adolescents from two rounds (2015-16 and 2018-19) of the Understanding the Lives of Adolescents and Young Adults surveys in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, India were used. Multivariate linear and logistic regression models were used to estimate the prospective relationships of explanatory variables in the first round of the survey with nutritional status (ie, hemoglobin, BMI- and height-for-age z-scores, and incidence of anemia, stunting, and underweight) and learning outcomes (ie, reading proficiency, math proficiency, and school dropout) in the second round of the survey. The multivariable models were adjusted for a range of confounders, clustering by the population sampling unit and sampling weights. RESULTS: Girls had a lower hemoglobin (adjusted mean difference (aMD) = -2.07; 95% confidence interval (CI) = -2.20, -1.94; P < 0.001) and height-for-age z-score (aMD = -0.45; 95% CI = -0.53, -0.38; P < 0.001) and higher BMI-for-age z-score (aMD = 0.36; 95% CI = 0.27, 0.44; P < 0.001) compared to boys. Girls had poorer reading (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.81; 95% CI = 0.70, 0.95; P = 0.01) and math proficiency (adjusted odds ratio aOR = 0.36; 95% CI = 0.31, 0.42; P < 0.001), and increased risk of school dropout (aOR = 1.65; 95% CI = 1.40, 1.95; P < 0.001) than boys. Receiving IFA tablets was not significantly associated with hemoglobin levels of adolescents overall, however we noted a significant beneficial relationship among girls (aMD = 0.41; 95% CI = 0.00, 0.82) but not among boys (aMD = 0.02; 95% CI = -0.38, 0.43) (P for interaction = 0.09). Receiving IFA tablets was positively associated with reading proficiency (aOR = 1.47; 95% CI = 1.07, 2.01; P = 0.02), math proficiency (aOR = 1.51; 95% CI = 1.16, 1.98; P < 0.001) and a reduced risk of school dropout (aOR = 0.72; 95% CI = 0.54, 0.96; P = 0.03). Deworming was not associated with nutritional status and learning outcomes. Diverse dietary intake was positively associated with hemoglobin, height-for-age z-score and math proficiency, and a reduced risk of school dropout in adolescents. CONCLUSION: Integrated nutritional and health interventions and strengthening the existing nutrition supplementation program are critical to address adolescents' nutritional needs and improve educational outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a period of rapid physical growth and transition between childhood to adulthood. However, in many developing countries, nutritional and epidemiological transitions are contributing to surging overnutrition, which, together with prevalent undernutrition, is resulting in the double burden of malnutrition (DBM) among adolescents. Schools as social systems have tremendous but mostly underutilized capacity to facilitate change and address a range of nutritional and associated educational concerns of adolescents and young people. The main objective of this systematic review will be to describe school-based interventions that address the multiple forms of malnutrition, and synthesize their effects on nutrition and educational outcomes among adolescents (10 - 19 - years - old) from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: Comprehensive literature searches will be conducted in multiple electronic databases, including Medline (through PubMed), Embase, CENTRAL (through Cochrane Library), CINAHL, and Google Scholar. We will include randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-RCTs including controlled before-after studies, examining the effects of nutrition interventions on nutrition and educational outcomes among adolescents in LMICs. Two reviewers will independently screen all citations and full-text articles and abstract data. The quality of the included studies will be assessed with the Cochrane Collaboration's revised tool for assessing the risk of bias for RCTs and the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions tool for controlled before-after studies and non-randomized controlled trials. DISCUSSION: To maximize the power of schools as a platform to reinforce the mutually beneficial relationship between adolescent nutrition and education, it is imperative to develop and implement integrated interventions connecting schools, adolescents, parents, communities, and the health care system. The results of this systematic review may provide a comprehensive state of current knowledge on the effectiveness of school-based interventions to enable future research that maximizes the impact and efficiency of integrated approaches to tackle multiple forms of malnutrition among school-going and out-of-school adolescents. The use of cisplatin (CP) in chemotherapy of resistant cancers is limited due to its dose-dependent nephrotoxicity. Disulfiram (DSF), the aversion therapy for alcoholism, has recently emerged as an anticancer and chemopreventive agent. Its anticancer activity is potentiated in the presence of copper. However, such use of copper leads to several adverse effects. In the present study, the protective effect of DSF and its copper chelate (Cu-DEDC) against CP-induced nephrotoxicity in rats was evaluated. Nephrotoxicity was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of CP (5 mg/kg). The treatment groups included control (vehicle treated), CP (CP-treated), CP + DSF (CP followed by DSF), CP + DSF + Cu (CP followed by DSF and CuCl2), CP + Cu-DEDC (CP followed by Cu-DEDC), and CP + AMF (amifostine pre-treated and CP-treated). The DSF, Cu-DEDC, and CuCl2 were administered orally at 50 mM/kg/day dose for 5 days post CP injection. AMF served as a standard chemo protectant, administered intravenously 30 min prior to CP. The markers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and kidney function estimated on the 6th day revealed that both DSF and Cu-DEDC significantly attenuated the CP-induced rise in the serum/urine creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). The CP-induced rise in serum alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) was reversed by these drugs. Both drugs reduced the levels of malondialdehyde and nitric oxide (NO) in kidney tissues. These drugs reversed CP-induced depletion of SOD, catalase, and GSH in the kidneys. There was a significant reduction in the CP-induced TNF-α and IL-1ß production along with prevention of histological alterations. Above observations indicate that DSF and Cu-DEDC may have significance as adjuvants to protect against CP-induced nephrotoxicity.

AIM: To assess the association of various clinical parameters and proinflammatory cytokines in the wound-healing process of dental implants with the presence or absence of antibiotic prophylaxis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study included evaluation of early wound-healing process in patients undergoing dental implant placement procedures with and without antibiotic prophylaxis. A total of 50 patients with partial edentulous arch were included in the present study. All the subjects were broadly divided into two study groups depending upon the presence or absence of prophylactic antibiotic therapy, with 25 patients in each group. One group consisted of subjects who were given prophylactic amoxicillin (2 gm), 1 hour before the starting of the surgery, followed by 500 mg 3 times a day for 1 week. Detection of interleukin (IL)-1ß and -8 cytokine levels in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF)/peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) was done immediately after the dental surgery. All the results were compiled and analyzed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 17.0. RESULTS: A significant increase in the PICF IL-1ß concentration at postoperative follow-up time was observed in the antibiotic group in comparison with the baseline values. A significant increase in the IL-8 concentration postoperatively in comparison with the baseline values in the antibiotic group was also observed. At the time of surgery, the IL-8 concentrations were statistically lower in the antibiotic group in comparison with the other study group. Concentration of amoxicillin, as observed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), was lower than the minimum detection levels. CONCLUSION: Detection of amoxicillin is not feasible within the GCF samples immediately after dental surgery procedure. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Clinical usefulness of prophylactic use of amoxicillin is still doubtful.

Despite the availability of multiple therapeutic agents, the search for novel pain management of neuropathic pain is still a challenge. Oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling are prominently involved in clinical manifestation of neuropathic pain. Toxicodendron pubescens, popularly known as Rhus Tox (RT) is recommended in alternative medicines as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic remedy. Earlier, we reported anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic and immunomodulatory activities of Rhus Tox. In continuation, we evaluated antinociceptive efficacy of Rhus Tox in the neuropathic pain and delineated its underlying mechanism. Initially, in-vitro assay using LPS-mediated ROS-induced U-87 glioblastoma cells was performed to study the effect of Rhus Tox on reactive oxygen species (ROS), anti-oxidant status and cytokine profile. Rhus Tox decreased oxidative stress and cytokine release with restoration of anti-oxidant systems. Chronic treatment with Rhus Tox ultra dilutions for 14 days ameliorated neuropathic pain revealed as inhibition of cold, warm and mechanical allodynia along with improved motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) in constricted nerve. Rhus Tox decreased the oxidative and nitrosative stress by reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) content, respectively along with up regulated glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activity in sciatic nerve of rats. Notably, Rhus Tox treatment caused significant reductions in the levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) as compared with CCI-control group. Protective effect of Rhus Tox against CCI-induced sciatic nerve injury in histopathology study was exhibited through maintenance of normal nerve architecture and inhibition of inflammatory changes. Overall, neuroprotective effect of Rhus Tox in CCI-induced neuropathic pain suggests the involvement of anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

The present study was designed to investigate the protective effect of ferulic acid (FA) against isoproterenol (ISO)-induced cardiac toxicity in rats. Isoproterenol challenged in a dose of 85 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) subcutaneously for two consecutive days in the experimental group resulted in acute cardiac toxicity as evidenced by changes in electrocardiogram (ECG) pattern and marked elevation of serum cardiac enzymes viz aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), creatinine kinase (CK-MB) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) also increases inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, acute toxicity effect was exhibited by disturbance in the antioxidant system as decrease in activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) with the rise in activities of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO). Pre-treatment with FA at the increasing dose of (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg b.w.) orally for 28 consecutive days followed by isoproterenol injection for 2 days significantly attenuated changes in serum cardiac enzymes. Furthermore, histopathological evaluation confirmed the restoration of cellular architecture in FA pretreated rats. The cardioprotective effect of FA was comparable with standard drug treatment metoprolol. Taken together, FA demonstrated cardioprotective effect against ISO-induced cardiac toxicity by normalization of serum cardiac biomarkers, alleviating oxidative stress and augmenting endogenous antioxidant system.

In the present study, the preventive effects of orally administered disulfiram (DS) against the doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiotoxicity were investigated in rats. DS was orally administered for 7 days at doses of 2, 10, and 50 mg/kg/day. DOX (30 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administered on the 5th day of the initiation of DS treatment. Within 48 h of injection, DOX treatment significantly altered ECG, elevated the ST height, and increased the QT and QRS intervals. It reduced the cardiac levels of injury markers like creatine kinase isoenzyme-MB and lactate dehydrogenase. DOX elevated the serum levels of SGOT and nitric oxide. Its injection significantly induced lipid peroxidation in the cardiac tissue and reduced the activities of innate antioxidants like super oxide dismutase, catalase, and reduced glutathione in the cardiac tissue. DOX treatment raised the TNF-α level and caused histological alterations in the myocardium like neutrophil infiltrations, myonecrosis, and edema. Pre-treatment of rats with DS (2, 10, and 50 mg/kg p. o. for 7 days) prevented the ECG changes, minimized oxidative stress, and normalized the biochemical indicators of the DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. DS also protected rat heart from DOX-induced histological alterations. Recently, DS is reported to exert chemosensitization of cancer cells. Our in vitro investigation using MCF7 cell line revealed that DS reverses the DOX-induced suppression of NF-κB and Nrf2 expression. These findings about the protective activity of DS against the DOX-induced cardiotoxicity warrant a detailed investigation on its utility as an adjunct therapy to cancer chemotherapy.

RESUMO

Without using any toxic or hazardous reagent, ligand, acid, transition metal catalyst, additives/promoters and organic solvent, green Knoevenagel condensation and tandem Knoevenagel-Michael reactions have been successfully carried out by using chickpea leaf exudates as a naturally sourced Bronsted acid type bio-catalyst. The reaction proceeds in neat chickpea leaf exudates at room temperature in aqueous conditions in very short reaction times, and therefore, it is an evergreen and environmentally sound alternative to the existing protocols for benzopyran synthesis. In comparison to the conventional methods, this synthetic pathway complies with several key requirements of green chemistry principles such as the utilization of biodegradable catalyst obtained from renewable feedstock, auxiliary aqueous conditions, along with waste prevention. The same protocol was also extended to the synthesis of 2H-xanthene-1,8-diones by condensation of aromatic aldehydes with dimedone achieving excellent yields. Thus, the reported protocol offers an attractive option because of its ecological safety, environmental acceptance, sustainability, low-cost straightforward work-up procedure and with excellent values of green chemistry metrics as compared with other reported methods.
