RESUMO

An insulated building-integrated photovoltaic (PV) roof prototype is designed, developed, and experimentally monitored for the composite climatic conditions in the current work. The prototype is monitored based on hourly indoor room temperature, relative humidity, discomfort index, decrement factor time lag, and power generation. To validate the results, a heat conduction equation was developed and simulated considering actual lower income group (LIG) building size and materials. Second-order polynomial equations were derived from simulation results to optimize insulation thickness. Additionally, the economic analysis of the insulated building-integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) roof was analyzed and compared to the reinforced concrete cement (RCC) roof. The results reveal that insulated BIPV roofs outperform the RCC roof, reducing indoor temperatures by 3.34 ℃ to 1.37 ℃ within an optimum thickness range of 0.0838-0.1056 m. A time lag of 1 h and a significant reduction in decrement factor up to 0.29 are achieved. The average discomfort index of the proposed roof during sunshine hours was found to be between 23 and 26.5. The insulated BIPV roofs with levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of the 3.38 Rs/kWh gave a payback period of 6.32 years and a higher internal rate of return of 29.4 compared to RCC roof. The current study increases the feasibility of PV modules to be used as building material.

Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) and its co-chaperones promote cancer, and targeting Hsp90 holds promise for cancer treatment. Most of the efforts to harness this potential have focused on targeting the Hsp90 N-terminus ATP binding site. Although newer-generation inhibitors have shown improved efficacy in aggressive cancers, induction of the cellular heat shock response (HSR) by these inhibitors is thought to limit their clinical efficacy. Therefore, Hsp90 inhibitors with novel mechanisms of action and that do not trigger the HSR would be advantageous. Here, we investigated the mechanism by which capsaicin inhibits Hsp90. Through mutagenesis, chemical modifications, and proteomic studies, we show that capsaicin binds to the N-terminus of Hsp90 and inhibits its ATPase activity. Consequently, capsaicin and its analogs inhibit Hsp90 ATPase-dependent progesterone receptor reconstitution in vitro. Capsaicin did not induce the HSR, instead, it promoted the degradation of Hsp70 through the lysosome-autophagy pathway. Remarkably, capsaicin did not induce degradation of the constitutively expressed cognate Hsc70, indicating selectivity for Hsp70. Combined treatments of capsaicin and the Hsp90 inhibitor 17-AAG improved the anti-tumor efficacy of 17-AAG in cell culture and tridimensional tumor spheroid growth assays using breast and prostate cancer models. Consistent with this, in silico docking studies revealed that capsaicin binding to the ATP binding site of Hsp90 was distinct from classical N-terminus Hsp90 inhibitors, indicating a novel mechanism of action. Collectively, these findings support the use of capsaicin as a chemical scaffold to develop novel Hsp90 N-terminus inhibitors as well as its ability to be a potential cancer co-therapeutic.

INTRODUCTION: When a nonsurgical endodontic treatment is ineffective, surgery is necessary. This entails putting a retrofilling to seal the tooth's apex. Exposing the lesion, performing a curettage, exposing the root apex, resecting it, preparing the root end, and lastly filling the cavity with the proper material are all steps in endodontic surgery. Thus, the aim of this study is to compare the apical microleakage of four root-end filling materials in cavities prepared using ultrasonic retro tip in in vitro conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An in vitro study was conducted on 60 extracted single-rooted teeth and was cut at the cementoenamel junction (CEJ). They were biomechanically prepared and obturated. Apical 3 mm root-end resection was done using a diamond disc. Root-end cavities were made using an ultrasonic retro tip. Teeth were separated into four groups and filled with SuperEBA®ï¸ ethoxy-benzoic acid (EBA; Keystone Industries, New Jersey), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Biodentine (Septodont, France), and TotalFill Bioceramic Root Repair Material (BC RRM; FKG Dentaire Sàrl, Switzerland). The samples were kept in methylene blue dye and split longitudinally. The degree of dye penetration was observed under a stereomicroscope and scored. Finally, the results were analyzed. RESULTS: TotalFill BC RRM and Biodentine showed the least apical microleakage (p <0.05). Group 1 samples had the highest mean microleakage, followed by Group 2, Group 3, and Group 4 samples. CONCLUSION: All of the sample groups showed some evidence of microleakage, but not all of the samples showed leaking. SuperEBA (Group 1) demonstrated the highest microleakage when compared to the other groups.

Chemoresistance renders a challenge to the clinics to treat breast cancer patients. Current treatment strategies are effective in mitigating tumor growth but remain largely ineffective against cancer-initiating cells or breast Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs). Epithelial-to-mesenchymal-transition (EMT) regulates breast CSC physiology. Zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) is a key EMT-transcription factor that regulates breast CSC - differentiation and metastasis. However, its potential role in modulating tumor chemoresistance has not yet been fully understood. In-silico analysis revealed a higher ZEB1 expression in breast cancer patients that leads to decreased overall and relapse-free survival. We generated sorted breast CSC with stable ZEB1 overexpression (CD24-/CD44+GFP-ZEB1) and/or silencing (CD24-/CD44+ZEB1 shRNA) as well as breast cancer cells with stable ZEB1 overexpression (CD24+GFP-ZEB1) and/or silencing (CD24+ZEB1 shRNA). An increased colony-forming efficiency and doxorubicin accumulation correlated with decreased promoter activity and expression profile of ABCC1 drug-efflux ABC transporter in CD24-/CD44+GFP-ZEB1. Additionally, CD24-/CD44+GFP-ZEB1 demonstrated doxorubicin-induced higher anti-apoptotic and lower pro-apoptotic protein expressions in the mitochondrial and cytosolic fractions. Chemoresistant CD24-/CD44+GFP-ZEB1 cells depicted 1000-fold higher IC-50 values of doxorubicin and decreased activation of JNK-p38 stress kinase molecular signaling-dependent mammosphere forming efficiency to evade apoptosis. Thus, ZEB1 and its downstream effectors are plausible therapeutic targets for the mitigation of breast cancer chemoresistance in patients.

PURPOSE: Surgeons' skill in the operating room is a major determinant of patient outcomes. Assessment of surgeons' skill is necessary to improve patient outcomes and quality of care through surgical training and coaching. Methods for video-based assessment of surgical skill can provide objective and efficient tools for surgeons. Our work introduces a new method based on attention mechanisms and provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of state-of-the-art methods for video-based assessment of surgical skill in the operating room. METHODS: Using a dataset of 99 videos of capsulorhexis, a critical step in cataract surgery, we evaluated image feature-based methods and two deep learning methods to assess skill using RGB videos. In the first method, we predict instrument tips as keypoints and predict surgical skill using temporal convolutional neural networks. In the second method, we propose a frame-wise encoder (2D convolutional neural network) followed by a temporal model (recurrent neural network), both of which are augmented by visual attention mechanisms. We computed the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values through fivefold cross-validation. RESULTS: To classify a binary skill label (expert vs. novice), the range of AUC estimates was 0.49 (95% confidence interval; CI = 0.37 to 0.60) to 0.76 (95% CI = 0.66 to 0.85) for image feature-based methods. The sensitivity and specificity were consistently high for none of the methods. For the deep learning methods, the AUC was 0.79 (95% CI = 0.70 to 0.88) using keypoints alone, 0.78 (95% CI = 0.69 to 0.88) and 0.75 (95% CI = 0.65 to 0.85) with and without attention mechanisms, respectively. CONCLUSION: Deep learning methods are necessary for video-based assessment of surgical skill in the operating room. Attention mechanisms improved discrimination ability of the network. Our findings should be evaluated for external validity in other datasets.

Multi-subunit ring-ATPases carry out a myriad of biological functions, including genome packaging in viruses. Though the basic structures and functions of these motors have been well-established, the mechanisms of ATPase firing and motor coordination are poorly understood. Here, using single-molecule fluorescence, we determine that the active bacteriophage T4 DNA packaging motor consists of five subunits of gp17. By systematically doping motors with an ATPase-defective subunit and selecting single motors containing a precise number of active or inactive subunits, we find that the packaging motor can tolerate an inactive subunit. However, motors containing one or more inactive subunits exhibit fewer DNA engagements, a higher failure rate in encapsidation, reduced packaging velocity, and increased pausing. These findings suggest a DNA packaging model in which the motor, by re-adjusting its grip on DNA, can skip an inactive subunit and resume DNA translocation, suggesting that strict coordination amongst motor subunits of packaging motors is not crucial for function.

BACKGROUND: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) tumors are composed of a heterogeneous population containing both cancer cells and cancer stem cells (CSCs). These CSCs are generated through an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), thus making it pertinent to identify the unique EMT-molecular targets that regulate this phenomenon. METHODS AND RESULTS: In the present study, we performed in silico analysis of microarray data from luminal, Her2+, and TNBC cell lines and identified 15 relatively unexplored EMT-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) along with the markedly high expression of EMT-transcription factor (EMT-TF), SNAI1. Interestingly, stable overexpression of SNAI1 in MCF-7 induced the expression of DEGs along with increased migration, invasion, and in vitro tumorigenesis that was comparable to TNBCs. Next, stable SNAI1 overexpression led to increased expression of DEGs that was reverted with SNAI1 silencing in both breast cancer cells and CSCs sorted from various TNBC cell lines. Higher fold enrichment of SNAI1 on E-boxes in the promoter regions suggested a positive regulation of ALCAM, MMP2, MMP13, MMP14, VCAN, ANKRD1, KRT16, CTGF, TGFRIIß, PROCR negative regulation of CDH1, DSP and DSC3B by SNAI1 leading to EMT. Furthermore, SNAI1-mediated increased migration, invasion, and tumorigenesis in these sorted cells led to the activation of signaling mediators, ERK1/2, STAT3, Src, and FAK. Finally, the SNAI1-mediated activation of breast CSC phenotypes was perturbed by inhibition of downstream target, MMPs using Ilomastat. CONCLUSION: Thus, the molecular investigation for the gene regulatory framework in the present study identified MMPs, a downstream effector in the SNAI1-mediated EMT regulation.

Breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) are distinct CD44+-subpopulations that are involved in metastasis and chemoresistance. However, the underlying molecular mechanism of CD44 in breast CSCs-mediated tumorigenesis remains elusive. We observed high CD44 expression in advanced-stage clinical breast tumor samples. CD44 activation in breast CSCs sorted from various triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines induced proliferation, migration, invasion, mammosphere formation that were reversed in presence of inhibitor, 4-methyl umbelliferone or CD44 silencing. CD44 activation in breast CSCs induced Src, Akt, and nuclear translocation of pSTAT3. PCR arrays revealed differential expression of a metabolic gene, Lipoprotein lipase (LPL), and transcription factor, SNAI3. Differential transcriptional regulation of LPL by pSTAT3 and SNAI3 was confirmed by promoter-reporter and chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis. Orthotopic xenograft murine breast tumor model revealed high tumorigenicity of CD24-/CD44+-breast CSCs as compared with CD24+-breast cancer cells. Furthermore, stable breast CSCs-CD44 shRNA and/or intratumoral administration of Tetrahydrolipstatin (LPL inhibitor) abrogated tumor progression and neoangiogenesis. Thus, LPL serves as a potential target for an efficacious therapeutics against aggressive breast cancer.

The RNA binding protein TDP-43 forms intranuclear or cytoplasmic aggregates in age-related neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we found that RNA binding-deficient TDP-43 (produced by neurodegeneration-causing mutations or posttranslational acetylation in its RNA recognition motifs) drove TDP-43 demixing into intranuclear liquid spherical shells with liquid cores. These droplets, which we named "anisosomes", have shells that exhibit birefringence, thus indicating liquid crystal formation. Guided by mathematical modeling, we identified the primary components of the liquid core to be HSP70 family chaperones, whose adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-dependent activity maintained the liquidity of shells and cores. In vivo proteasome inhibition within neurons, to mimic aging-related reduction of proteasome activity, induced TDP-43-containing anisosomes. These structures converted to aggregates when ATP levels were reduced. Thus, acetylation, HSP70, and proteasome activities regulate TDP-43 phase separation and conversion into a gel or solid phase.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has prompted substantial changes in the way ophthalmology is practiced globally. General guidelines on safe ophthalmic practice have been issued by various bodies across the globe including the All India Ophthalmological Society. While these are suitable to ophthalmology overall, they are not entirely suitable to a subspecialty practice, particularly pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology, which entails dealing with children, surgery under general anesthesia and managing possible life threatening situations. A group of sub-specialists and anesthetists met virtually and arrived at a consensus with regard to practice and general anesthesia protocols pertaining to these subspecialties of ophthalmology. The recommendations made by the expert group are specific yet can be universally followed to ensure the best and safest outcome for the practitioner and patient alike. The recommendations pertain to listing conditions which need emergency or urgent care in the fields of pediatric ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology, precautions and technique of pediatric and neuro-ophthalmic eye examination and a protocol for delivering a safe general anesthesia for a pediatriceye surgery.

Cardiovascular disorders constitute the principal cause of deaths worldwide and will continue as the major disease-burden by the year 2060. A significant proportion of heart failures occur because of use and misuse of drugs and most of the investigational agents fail to achieve any clinical relevance. Here, we investigated rosuvastatin and retinoic acid for their "pharmacological pleiotropy" against high dose ß-adrenergic agonist (isoproterenol)-induced acute myocardial insult. Rats were pretreated with rosuvastatin and/or retinoic acid for seven days and the myocardial injury was induced by administering isoproterenol on the seventh and eighth day. After induction, rats were anaesthetized for electrocardiography, then sacrificed and different samples were collected/stored for various downstream assays. Myocardial injury with isoproterenol resulted in increased cardiac mass, decreased R-wave amplitude, increased QRS and QT durations; elevated levels of cardiac markers like cTnI, CK-MB, ALT and AST; increased lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation and tissue nitric oxide levels; decreased endogenous antioxidants like SOD, CAT, GR, GST, GPx and total antioxidant activity; increased inflammatory markers like TNF-α and IL-6; decreased the mRNA expression of Nrf2 and Bcl-2; increased the mRNA expression of Bax, eNOS and iNOS genes. Pretreatment with rosuvastatin and/or retinoic acid mitigated many of the above biochemical and pathological alterations. Our results demonstrate that rosuvastatin and retinoic acid exert cardioprotective effects and may act as potential agents in the prevention of ß-adrenergic agonist-induced acute myocardial injury in rats. Cardioprotective potential of rosuvastatin and retinoic acid could be attributed to their influence on the redox pathways, immunomodulation, membrane stability, Nrf2 preservation, iNOS and Bax expression levels. Thus, they may act directly or indirectly at various steps, the breakpoints, in the pathophysiological cascade responsible for cardiac injury. Our study gives insights about the pharmacological pleiotropism of rosuvastatin and retinoic acid.

Management options in third nerve palsy are limited as four of the six extraocular muscles are involved. Surgery has to be tailored on a case-to-case basis. Aim of this retrospective case series is to report 1-year outcomes of a modified surgical technique entailing full tendon transposition of lateral rectus to medial rectus augmented with posterior fixation sutures in four patients with complete third nerve palsy. All four cases showed significant improvement of vertical and horizontal deviation with long-term stability of correction. Choice of route of full tendon augmented transposition of lateral rectus to medial rectus can aid in achieving good correction of the vertical misalignment in addition to horizontal correction.

BACKGROUND: Neuro-ophthalmology as a specialty is underdeveloped in India. The aim of our study was to determine the spectrum and profile of patients presenting to a tertiary eye care center with neuro-ophthalmic disorders. METHODS: A retrospective hospital-based study was conducted, and records of all patients seen at the neuro-ophthalmology clinic of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India, over a 1-year period were retrieved and evaluated. RESULTS: Of a total of 30,111 patients referred to various specialty clinics in a span of 1 year, 1597 (5%) were referred for neuro-ophthalmology evaluation. The mean patient age was 30.8 ± 19.5 years, with a male dominance (M:F = 2.02:1). Among these patients, optic nerve disorders were noted in 63.8% (n = 1,020), cranial nerve palsy in 7% (n = 114), cortical visual impairment in 6.5% (n = 105), and others (eye/optic nerve hypophasia, blepharospasm, and optic disc drusen) in 6% (n = 95). Among the patients with optic nerve disorders, optic neuropathy without disc edema/(traumatic optic neuropathy, hereditary, tumor-related, retrobulbar neuritis, toxic, and idiopathic) was noted in 42.8% (n = 685) and optic neuropathy with disc edema (ischemic optic neuropathy, papilledema, post-papilledema optic atrophy, papillitis, neuroretinitis, and inflammatory optic neuropathy) in 20.9% (n = 335). Sixteen percent of patients (n = 263) were incorrect referrals. CONCLUSION: The neuro-ophthalmic clinic constitutes a significant referral unit in a tertiary eye care center in India. Traumatic and ischemic optic neuropathies are the most common diagnoses. Neuro-ophthalmology requires further development as a subspecialty in India to better serve the nation's population.

PURPOSE: To report long-term outcome of inferior oblique anterior and nasal transposition in superior oblique palsy. METHODS: The medical records of patients with superior oblique palsy who underwent inferior oblique anterior nasal transposition were reviewed retrospectively. A comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation, including prism bar cover test and measurement of torsion, was performed for all cases. One-year postoperative results were evaluated for alignment in primary gaze, contralateral gaze, and upgaze; reduction in inferior oblique overaction and changes in fundus torsion to assess long-term outcome of the procedure. RESULTS: A total of 12 patients were included. Three cases also underwent horizontal muscle surgery. Mean age at the time of surgery was 20.6 years. The median preoperative hypertropia was 21.5Δ (range, 12Δ-36Δ), corrected to 4.5Δ (range, 2Δ-10Δ) at 12 months postoperatively (P = 0.002). Median inferior oblique overaction decreased from +3 (range, +1 to +4) to 0 (range, -1 to +1). Preoperative fundus extorsion was 19.2° ± 6.7°; postoperative, 0.58° ± 1.8° (P < 0.001). No consecutive hypotropia or underaction in elevation was observed in 10patients; 1 patient complained of torsional diplopia in upgaze. Extorsion was eliminated and head tilt improved in all patients. CONCLUSIONS: Inferior oblique anterior and nasal transposition resulted in good long-term outcomes in our patients with superior oblique palsy presenting with hypertropia, inferior oblique overaction, and extorsion in primary gaze.

Traumatic and iatrogenic flap avulsions of rectus muscles are infrequently reported. Three cases of rectus muscle flap tears are described demonstrating use of appropriate imaging for preoperative diagnosis, intraoperative findings to confirm diagnosis, and modalities of surgical management. Surgical management of complete third nerve paralysis is a challenge. While several techniques have been described over the years, they result in less than satisfactory outcomes with residual deviations in primary gaze or postoperative drifts. One of the described techniques for management of oculomotor palsy has been medial transposition of the lateral rectus muscle which provides a good surgical alternative but often can result in undercorrection. We describe a modification of the existing technique of medial transposition of the split lateral rectus by force augmentation through the use of equatorial fixation sutures resulting in an improved outcome in primary gaze alignment. The modified technique involves splitting of the lateral rectus into two halves followed by transposing the superior half from below the superior oblique and superior rectus and inferior half from below the inferior oblique and inferior rectus to attach them at the superior and inferior edge of the medial rectus insertion, respectively. This is followed by placing non-absorbable sutures to fix each split belly of the transposed muscles to the sclera at the equator adjacent to the medial rectus such that the split muscles lie nearly parallel to the medial rectus till the equator before reflecting away. These sutures augment the force of the transposed muscles by redirecting the force vectors in the direction of action of the medial rectus. Satisfactory postoperative primary gaze alignment was achieved in three cases of complete third nerve paralysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative ileus (POI) can worsen outcomes, increase cost, and prolong hospitalization. We previously found that a disposable, non-invasive acoustic gastrointestinal surveillance (AGIS) biosensor distinguishes healthy controls from patients recovering from abdominal surgery. Here, we tested whether AGIS can prospectively predict which patients will develop POI in a multicenter study. STUDY DESIGN: AGIS is a disposable device embedded with a microphone that adheres to the abdominal wall and connects to a computer that measures acoustic intestinal rate (IR), defined as motility events/minute. We applied AGIS for 60 min before and continuously after abdominal surgery. Clinicians blinded to AGIS recordings clinically separated patients into those with vs. without POI. We used receiver operating characteristic curve analysis to calculate sensitivity, specificity, and negative predictive value (NPV) of AGIS to predict POI. RESULTS: There were 28 subjects; nine developed POI. Median IR was 3.01/min and 4.46/min between POI and non-POI groups, respectively (P = 0.03). AGIS predicted POI onset with a sensitivity, specificity, and NPV of 63, 72, and 81%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Non-invasive, abdominal, acoustic monitoring prospectively predicts POI. Surgeons may use AGIS to rule out POI with over 80% certainty; this offers added confidence to advance feeding earlier in those for whom it is safe.

The health hazard of microwave radiation (MWR) has become a recent subject of interest as a result of the enormous increase in mobile phone usage. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of chronic low-intensity microwave exposure on cognitive function, heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), and DNA damage in rat brain. Experiments were performed on male Fischer rats exposed to MWR for 180 days at 3 different frequencies, namely, 900, 1800 MHz, and 2450 MHz. Animals were divided into 4 groups: group I: sham exposed; group II: exposed to MWR at 900 MHz, specific absorption rate (SAR) 5.953 × 10(-4) W/kg; group III: exposed to 1800 MHz, SAR 5.835 × 10(-4) W/kg; and group IV: exposed to 2450 MHz, SAR 6.672 × 10(-4) W/kg. All the rats were tested for cognitive function at the end of the exposure period and were subsequently sacrificed to collect brain. Level of HSP70 was estimated by enzyme-linked immunotarget assay and DNA damage was assessed using alkaline comet assay in all the groups. The results showed declined cognitive function, elevated HSP70 level, and DNA damage in the brain of microwave-exposed animals. The results indicated that, chronic low-intensity microwave exposure in the frequency range of 900 to 2450 MHz may cause hazardous effects on the brain.

BACKGROUND: There is an increase in the incidence of traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) due to increasing urbanization and rapid spurt in the number of motor vehicles on the road. Despite early presentation and ease of diagnosis the visual outcomes in TON are still limited. There is also significant confusion about the timing, dose and efficacy of steroid treatment in its management. PURPOSE: To provide a clinical update of the pros and cons of steroid therapy for TON. DESIGN: The paper is a retrospective review of the currently available literature in the English language indexed in PubMed. METHODS: A PubMed search was conducted by the authors using the following terms: Traumatic optic neuropathy, megadose, steroids, methylprednisolone. Relevant original articles, review articles, and case reports related to the topic of discussion were evaluated and discussed in the paper. RESULTS: There is no prospective randomized control trial evaluating the effect of steroids in TON. There are varying reports on the effect of steroid therapy from significant improvement to no difference compared to observation. CONCLUSION: The decision to give steroids to patients with TON has to be on an individual case to case basis and must involve informed consent from the patient. There are documented advantages and disadvantages of steroid therapy and a prospective, randomized, controlled trial is necessary comparing steroids, surgery and observation before definitive management can be evolved.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative ileus (POI) can worsen outcomes, increase cost, and prolong hospitalization. An objective marker could help identify POI patients who should not be prematurely fed. We developed a disposable, non-invasive acoustic gastro-intestinal surveillance (AGIS) biosensor. We tested whether AGIS can distinguish healthy controls from patients recovering from abdominal surgery. STUDY DESIGN: AGIS is a disposable plastic device embedded with a microphone that adheres to the abdominal wall and connects to a computer that measures acoustic event rates. We compared intestinal rates of healthy subjects using AGIS for 60 min after a standardized meal to recordings of two postoperative groups: (1) patients tolerating standardized feeding and (2) POI patients. We compared intestinal rates among groups using ANOVA and t tests. RESULTS: There were 8 healthy controls, 7 patients tolerating feeding, and 25 with POI; mean intestinal rates were 0.14, 0.03, and 0.016 events per second, respectively (ANOVA p < 0.001). AGIS separated patients from controls with 100 % sensitivity and 97 % specificity. Among patients, rates were higher in fed versus POI subjects (p = 0.017). CONCLUSION: Non-invasive, abdominal acoustic monitoring distinguishes POI from non-POI subjects. Future research will test whether AGIS can identify patients at risk for development of POI and assist with postoperative feeding decisions.
