Following the publication of this paper, it was drawn to the Editors' attention by a concerned reader that the cell invasion and migration assay data shown in Fig. 6 and the cell proliferation assay experiments shown in Fig. 2 were strikingly similar to data appearing in different form in other articles by different authors; furthermore, in Fig. 2, for the '10 mM metformin' experiment, certain of the glioma cells appeared to be strikingly similar to other cells contained within the same data panels. Owing to the fact that the contentious data in the above article had already been published elsewhere or were under consideration for publication prior to its submission to Molecular Medicine Reports, and owing to concerns with the authenticity of certain of the data, the Editor has decided that this paper should be retracted from the Journal. The authors were asked for an explanation to account for these concerns, but the Editorial Office did not receive a reply. The Editor apologizes to the readership for any inconvenience caused. Hypothyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism were both characterized by elevated levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Previous studies had found that high iodine or hyperlipidemia alone was associated with increased TSH level. However, their combined effects on TSH have not been elucidated. In this study, combination of high iodine and hyperlipidemia was established through the combined exposure of high-water iodine and high fat diet in Wistar rats. The results showed that combined exposure of high iodine and high fat can induce higher TSH level. The mRNA and protein levels of sodium iodide transporters (NIS) and type 1 deiodinase (D1) in thyroid tissues, which were crucial genes in the synthesis of thyroid hormones, decreased remarkably in combined exposure group. Mechanistically, down-regulated long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) metastasis associated in lung denocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) may regulate the expression of NIS by increasing miR-339-5p, and regulating D1 by increasing miR-224-5p. Then, the above findings were explored in subjects exposed to high water iodine and hyperlipidemia. The results indicated that in population combined with high iodine and hyperlipidemia, TSH level increased to higher level and lncRNA MALAT1-miR-339-5p-NIS axis was obviously activated. Collectively, this study found that combined exposure of high iodine and hyperlipidemia induced a higher level of TSH, and lncRNA MALAT1-miR-339-5p-NIS axis may play important role.

Background: The coexistence of emphysema and lung nodules could interact with each other and then lead to potential higher lung cancer risk. The study aimed to explore the association between emphysema combined with lung nodules and lung cancer risk. Methods: A total of 21,949 participants from the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) who underwent low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) examination were included. Participants were categorized into four groups (NENN group (non-emphysema and non-nodules), E group (emphysema without nodules), N group (nodules without emphysema), and E + N group (nodules with emphysema)) according to whether there were lung nodules and emphysema. Multivariable Cox regression and stratified analyses were performed to estimate the association between the four groups and lung cancer risk. Results: Among the 21,949 participants, there were 9,040 (41.2%), 5,819 (26.5%), 4,737 (21.6%), and 2,353 (10.7%) participants in the NENN group, E group, N group, and E + N group. The risk of lung cancer incidence increased in turn in NENN group, E group, N group and E + N group. Compared with NENN group, the age-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) (95% confidence intervals (CIs)) of lung cancer incidence were 2.07 (1.69 - 2.54) for E group, 4.13 (3.47 - 5.05) for N group, and 6.26 (5.14 - 7.62) for E + N group. The association was robust to adjustment for potential confounders (1.83 (1.47 - 2.27) for E group, 3.97 (3.24 - 4.86) for N group, and 5.23 (4.28 - 6.48) for E + N group). Comparable results as the lung cancer incidence were observed for lung cancer mortality, whether in age-adjusted model (E group: 1.85 (1.39 - 2.46), N group: 2.49 (1.89 - 3.29), E + N group: 4.27 (3.21 - 5.68)) or fully adjusted model (E group: 1.56 (1.15 - 2.11), N group: 2.43 (1.81 - 3.26), E + N group: 3.39 (2.50 - 4.61)). However, the trend of all-cause mortality risk among the four groups was somewhat different from that of lung cancer risk, whether in age-adjusted model (1.37 (1.21 - 1.54) for E group, 1.06 (0.92 - 1.21) for N group, and 1.75 (1.51 - 2.02) for E + N group) or fully adjusted model (1.26 (1.10 - 1.44) for E group, 1.09 (0.94 - 1.27) for N group, and 1.52 (1.30 - 1.79) for E + N group). Conclusion: Based on a large-scale lung cancer screening trial in the United States, this study demonstrated that either emphysema or lung nodules can increase lung cancer risk, and lung nodules combined with emphysema can further increase the lung cancer risk and all-cause mortality. The significance of these findings for lung cancer screening should be evaluated.

PURPOSE: Vertebral compression fractures are often treated with vertebroplasty, and filling the injured vertebrae with bone cement is a key part of vertebroplasty. This meta-analysis was performed to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of mineralized collagen-polymethylmethacrylate (MC-PMMA) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures by vertebroplasty. METHODS: A computerized search of the published literature on mineralized collagen-polymethylmethacrylate and polymethylmethacrylate bone cement in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures was conducted in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. The search was carried out from the time the database was created to March 2023 and 2 researchers independently conducted literature searches to retrieve a total of 884 studies, of which 12 were included in this meta-analysis. Cochrane systematic review methods were used to assess the quality of the literature and a meta-analysis was performed using ReviewManager 5.4 software. RESULTS: The results of the present meta-analysis showed that in postoperative adjacent vertebral fractures [OR = 0.25; 95% CI (0.15, 0.41)], postoperative cement leakage [OR = 0.45; 95% CI (0.30, 0.68)], Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores in the first 3 days after surgery [OR = -0.22; 95% CI (-0.42, -0.03)], ODI score at 6-12 months postoperatively [OR = -0.65; 95% CI (-0.97, -0.32)], visual analog scale (VAS) score at 6-12 months postoperatively [OR = -0.21; 95% CI (-0.46, 0.04)], and 1-year postoperative CT values [OR = 5.56; 95% CI (3.06, 8.06)], the MC-PMMA bone cement group was superior to the PMMA bone cement group. However, the differences between the two groups were not statistically different in terms of cement filling time, cement filling volume, operation time, intraoperative bleeding, hospitalization time, postoperative (<1 week, 3-6 months) vertebral body posterior convexity Cobb's angle, postoperative (<1 week, 6-12 months) vertebral body anterior margin relative height, postoperative (≤3 days, 1-3 months) pain VAS score and postoperative (1-3 months) ODI score. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with PMMA bone cement, the application of MC-PMMA bone cement is advantageous in reducing postoperative complications (adjacent vertebral fracture rate, cement leakage rate), pain relief, and functional recovery in the long-term postoperative period (>6 months), but there is still a need for more high-quality randomized controlled studies to provide more adequate evidence.

BACKGROUND: Relevant evidence suggests that angiogenic factors contribute significantly to fibril matrix reconstruction following physical injuries to tendon ligaments. Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), with its potent angiogenic effect, has been studied extensively, and its functional polymorphisms, including rs699947, rs1570360, and rs2010963, have been the focus of numerous investigations. Some scholars have explored the association between gene polymorphisms in the VEGFA and the risk of tendon ligament injury, but the findings are not entirely consistent. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between rs699947, rs1570360, and rs2010963 gene polymorphisms in VEGFA and the risk of tendon and ligament injuries. METHODS: After including articles about the association of VEGFA rs699947, rs1570360, and rs2010963 polymorphisms with tendon and ligament injuries according to the search strategy, we assessed their quality and conducted meta-analyses to examine the link between these polymorphisms and the risk of tendon and ligament injuries using odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Of 86 related articles, six were included in the meta-analysis. Some of these suggest an association between VEGFA rs2010963 and the risk of tendon and ligament injury in the population, with the specific C allele being one of the adverse factors for knee injury. Some studies suggest that VEGFA rs699947 and VEGFA rs1570360 single-nucleotide polymorphisms are associated with anterior cruciate ligament rupture. The risk of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament rupture is nearly doubled in individuals with the rs699947 CC genotype compared to the control group. Our analysis did not find any significant relationship between VEGFA gene polymorphisms (rs699947, rs1570360, and rs2010963) and the chance of tendon and ligament injury without consideration of race. However, the European population reveals that the CC genotype of VEGFA rs699947 can result in a greater risk of tendon and ligament injury, whereas the AG genotype for rs1570360 provides some protection. Additionally, rs2010963 was significantly associated with tendon and ligament injury; individuals with the C allele and the CC genotype had higher risk. False-positive report probability confirmed the high credibility of our results. CONCLUSION: Overall, this study found no significant association between VEGFA rs699947, rs1570360, and rs2010963 polymorphisms and the risk of tendon ligament injury. However, in subgroup analysis, some genotypes of VEGFA rs699947, rs1570360, and rs2010963 were found to increase the risk of tendon ligament injury in European populations.

OBJECTIVES: Anti-reflux mucosectomy (ARMS) is an emerging and promising endoscopic treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In the current study we aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of ARMS in treating Chinese GERD patients. METHODS: This was a single-center prospective cohort study. ARMS was performed in GERD patients by an experienced endoscopist. The patients were required to undergo symptom assessment as well as endoscopic examination, high-resolution manometry (HRM), and impedance-pH monitoring before and after ARMS. RESULTS: Twelve patients were enrolled. Follow-up was completed by all patients at 3 and 6 months, 11 patients at 1 year, and 8 patients at 2 years after ARMS, respectively. Symptom improvement was achieved in 66.7%, 75.0%, 72.7%, and 50.0% of the patients at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after ARMS, respectively. Postoperative dysphagia was reported by 25.0%, 25.0%, 27.3%, and 25.0% of patients at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after surgery, none of whom required additional invasive treatment. All patients with preoperative esophagitis healed after ARMS. For impedance-pH monitoring parameters, number of acidic reflux episodes and the proportion of patients with acid exposure time (AET) >4.0% decreased significantly after ARMS. CONCLUSIONS: ARMS was safe and effective in Chinese GERD patients. The efficacy of ARMS was not short-term and remained evident throughout the 2-year follow-up. Further multicenter studies with larger sample sizes are needed to verify our findings.

OBJECTIVE: In this study we aimed to compare the need for further examination with conventional gastroscopy within 1 year after magnetically assisted capsule endoscopy (MCCE) examination between patients with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and asymptomatic individuals. METHODS: After propensity score matching analysis, 372 patients with GI symptoms and 372 asymptomatic individuals who had undergone MCCE at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from January 1, 2019 to December 30, 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the participants and their MCCE and gastroscopic findings (performed within 1 year after MCCE) were analyzed. RESULTS: Fifty-one (6.85%) patients underwent further examination with conventional gastroscopy within 1 year after MCCE. Those with GI symptoms were more likely to undergo conventional gastroscopy than those without (9.95% vs 3.76%, P < 0.001). Polyps were the most common finding of MCCE. The rate of conventional gastroscopy in patients with focal lesions was significantly higher than that in those without focal lesions (P < 0.05). However, such rate did not differ in the different age groups (P = 0.106). CONCLUSIONS: MCCE is an optimal alternative for gastric examination, especially for large-scale screening of asymptomatic individuals. Patients with GI symptoms or focal lesions detected by MCCE are more likely to seek further examination with conventional gastroscopy for biopsy or endoscopic treatment than those without.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SCZ) has a global prevalence of 1% and increases the risk of mortality, reducing life expectancy. There is growing evidence that the risk of this disorder is higher in males than in females and it tends to develop in early adulthood. The Y chromosome is thought to be involved in biological processes other than sex determination and spermatogenesis. Studies have shown that loss of chromosome Y (LOY) in peripheral blood cells is associated with a variety of diseases (including cancer) and increased all-cause mortality. An analysis of the relationship between LOY and schizophrenia is warranted. METHODS: A total of 442 Chinese males (271 patients with schizophrenia vs. 171 controls) were included in this study. The copy numbers of the Y and X chromosomes were detected by positive droplets targeting the amelogenin gene (AMEL) on the Y chromosome and X chromosome (AMELY and AMELX, respectively), using droplet digital PCR (ddPCR). The LOY percentage was defined as the difference between the concentration of AMELX and the concentration of AMELY divided by the concentration of AMELX, denoted as (X - Y)/X. RESULTS: In the Han Chinese population, the LOY percentage was higher in the schizophrenia group than in the control group (p < 0.05), although there was no significant difference in the presence of LOY between the two groups. A strong correlation was found between the average of the disease duration and the average of the LOY percentage (R2 = 0.506, p = 0.032). The logistic regression analysis implied that the risk of LOY increases by 0.058 and 0.057 per year according to age at onset and duration of disease, respectively (ponset = 0.013, pduration = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS: In the Han Chinese population, the LOY percentage of the disease group was significantly different from that of the control group. The age of onset and duration of schizophrenia might be risk factors for LOY in peripheral blood cells. A larger sample size and expanded clinical information are needed for more in-depth and specific analyses.

Age prediction is an important field in forensic and aging research. Traditional methods used DNA methylation, telomere shortening, and mitochondrial DNA mutations to conduct age prediction models. Sex chromosomes, like the Y chromosome, have a significant role in aging as previously reported in hematopoietic disease and many non-reproductive cancers. Until now, there is no age predictor based on the percentage of loss of Y chromosome (LOY). LOY has been previously revealed to be correlated with Alzheimer's disease, short survival, and higher risk of cancer. The possible correlation of LOY between normal aging was not fully explored. In this study, we conducted age prediction by measuring LOY percentage by droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), based on 232 healthy male samples, including 171 blood samples, 49 saliva samples, 12 semen samples. The age group of samples ranges from 0 to 99 years, with two individuals in almost every single age. Pearson correlation method was performed to calculate the correlation index. The result indicated a correlation index of 0.21 (p = 0.0059) between age and LOY percentage in blood samples, with the regression formula being y = - 0.016823 + 0.001098x. The correlation between LOY percentage and age is obvious only when the individuals were divided into different age groups (R = 0.73, p = 0.016). In the studied saliva and semen samples, p-values of the correlation are 0.11 and 0.20, respectively, showing no significant association between age and LOY percentage in these two biological materials. For the first time, we investigated male-specific age predictor based on LOY. The study showed that LOY in leukocytes can be regarded as a male-specific age predictor for age group estimation in forensic genetics. This study might be indicative for forensic applications and aging research.

INTRODUCTION: This meta-analysis aimed to compare the differences in postoperative efficacy between oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) in the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Strictly based on the search strategy, we searched the published papers on OLIF and TLIF for the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library. A total of 607 related papers were retrieved, and 15 articles were finally included. The quality of the papers was evaluated according to the Cochrane systematic review methodology, and the data were extracted and meta-analyzed using Review manager 5.4 software. RESULTS: Through comparison, it was found that in the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases, the OLIF group had certain advantages over the TLIF group in terms of intraoperative blood loss, hospital stay, visual analog scale (VAS) for leg pain (VAS-LP), Oswestry disability index (ODI), disc height (DH), foraminal height (FH), fused segmental lordosis (FSL), and cage height, and the differences were statistically significant. The results were similar in terms of surgery time, complications, fusion rate, VAS for back pain (VAS-BP) and various sagittal imaging indicators, and there was no significant difference. CONCLUSIONS: OLIF and TLIF can relieve low back pain symptoms in the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases, but OLIF has certain advantages in terms of ODI and VAS-LP. In addition, OLIF has the advantages of minor intraoperative trauma and quick postoperative recovery.

Lysine crotonylation (Kcr) is an evolutionarily conserved protein post-translational modifications, which plays an important role in cellular physiology and pathology, such as chromatin remodeling, gene transcription regulation, telomere maintenance, inflammation, and cancer. Tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has been used to identify the global Kcr profiling of human, at the same time, many computing methods have been developed to predict Kcr sites without high experiment cost. Deep learning network solves the problem of manual feature design and selection in traditional machine learning (NLP), especially the algorithms in natural language processing which treated peptides as sentences, thus can extract more in-depth information and obtain higher accuracy. In this work, we establish a Kcr prediction model named ATCLSTM-Kcr which use self-attention mechanism combined with NLP method to highlight the important features and further capture the internal correlation of the features, to realize the feature enhancement and noise reduction modules of the model. Independent tests have proved that ATCLSTM-Kcr has better accuracy and robustness than similar prediction tools. Then, we design pipeline to generate MS-based benchmark dataset to avoid the false negatives caused by MS-detectability and improve the sensitivity of Kcr prediction. Finally, we develop a Human Lysine Crotonylation Database (HLCD) which using ATCLSTM-Kcr and the two representative deep learning models to score all lysine sites of human proteome, and annotate all Kcr sites identified by MS of current published literatures. HLCD provides an integrated platform for human Kcr sites prediction and screening through multiple prediction scores and conditions, and can be accessed on the website:www.urimarker.com/HLCD/. SIGNIFICANCE: Lysine crotonylation (Kcr) plays an important role in cellular physiology and pathology, such as chromatin remodeling, gene transcription regulation and cancer. To better elucidate the molecular mechanisms of crotonylation and reduce the high experimental cost, we establish a deep learning Kcr prediction model and solve the problem of false negatives caused by the detectability of mass spectrometry (MS). Finally, we develop a Human Lysine Crotonylation Database to score all lysine sites of human proteome, and annotate all Kcr sites identified by MS of current published literatures. Our work provides a convenient platform for human Kcr sites prediction and screening through multiple prediction scores and conditions.

This meta-analysis compared the efficacy of oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) and minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) in the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases. A computer search for the published literature on OLIF and MIS-TLIF for the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases in the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and other databases was performed, from which 522 related articles were retrieved and 13 were finally included. Two reviewers independently extracted data from the included studies and analyzed them using RevMan 5.4. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Cochrane systematic analysis and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Meta-analysis showed that the blood loss [95% confidence intervals (CI) (- 121.01, - 54.56), [Formula: see text]], hospital stay [95% CI (- 1.98, - 0.85), [Formula: see text]], postoperative fusion rate [95%CI (1.04, 3.60), [Formula: see text]], postoperative disc height [95% CI (0.50, 3.63), [Formula: see text]], and postoperative foraminal height [95% CI (0.96, 4.13), [Formula: see text]] were all better in the OLIF group; however, the complication rates were significantly lower in the MIS-TLIF group [95% CI (1.01, 2.06), [Formula: see text]]. However, there were no significant differences between the two in terms of surgery time, patient satisfaction, or postoperative functional scores. The OLIF group had the advantages of lower blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, a higher postoperative fusion rate, and better recovery of the disc and foraminal heights, whereas MIS-TLIF had a relatively lower complication rate.

BACKGROUND: Artemisia subg. Seriphidium, one of the most species-diverse groups within Artemisia, grows mainly in arid or semi-arid regions in temperate climates. Some members have considerable medicinal, ecological, and economic value. Previous studies on this subgenus have been limited by a dearth of genetic information and inadequate sampling, hampering our understanding of their phylogenetics and evolutionary history. We therefore sequenced and compared the chloroplast genomes of this subgenus, and evaluated their phylogenetic relationships. RESULTS: We newly sequenced 18 chloroplast genomes of 16 subg. Seriphidium species and compared them with one previously published taxon. The chloroplast genomes, at 150,586-151,256 bp in length, comprised 133 genes, including 87 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, 8 rRNA genes, and one pseudogene, with GC content of 37.40-37.46%. Comparative analysis showed that genomic structures and gene order were relatively conserved, with only some variation in IR borders. A total of 2203 repeats (1385 SSRs and 818 LDRs) and 8 highly variable loci (trnK - rps16, trnE - ropB, trnT, ndhC - trnV, ndhF, rpl32 - trnL, ndhG - ndhI and ycf1) were detected in subg. Seriphidium chloroplast genomes. Phylogenetic analysis of the whole chloroplast genomes based on maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses resolved subg. Seriphidium as polyphyletic, and segregated into two main clades, with the monospecific sect. Minchunensa embedded within sect. Seriphidium, suggesting that the whole chloroplast genomes can be used as molecular markers to infer the interspecific relationship of subg. Seriphidium taxa. CONCLUSION: Our findings reveal inconsistencies between the molecular phylogeny and traditional taxonomy of the subg. Seriphidium and provide new insights into the evolutionary development of this complex taxon. Meanwhile, the whole chloroplast genomes with sufficiently polymorphic can be used as superbarcodes to resolve interspecific relationships in subg. Seriphidium.

PURPOSE: Warm acupuncture (WA) therapy has been applied to treat spinal cord injury (SCI), but the underlying mechanism is unclear. The current study attempted to explore the WA therapy on neuronal apoptosis of SCI and the relationship with the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway. METHODS: The rat SCI models were established by the impact method. SCI rat models were subjected to WA treatment at Dazhui (GV14) and Jiaji points (T10), Yaoyangguan (GV3), Zusanli (ST36), and Ciliao (BL32). The rat SCI models were established by the impact method. WA and U0126 treatments were performed on the SCI rats. Motor function and neuronal apoptosis were detected. The relative mRNA of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), and interleukin-6 (IL-6), the phosphorylation level of ERK 1/2 and levels of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), BCL2-Associated X (Bax), and caspase-3 in spinal cord tissue were tested. RESULTS: After WA treatment, the Basso, Beattie & Bresnahan locomotor rating scale (BBB scale) of SCI rats in the WA treatment was significantly raised from 7 to 14 days after SCI. WA and U0126 treatment significantly diminished apoptotic cells and preserved the neurons in the injured spinal cord. WA and U0126 treatment alleviated the production of inflammatory cytokines in the spinal cord. The distinct increase of p-ERK 1/2 induced by SCI was reversed in WA and U0126 treatment groups. WA and U0126 treatment augmented the level of Bcl-2 and reversed the elevated cleaved caspase-3 protein level after SCI. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that WA might be associated with the downregulation of the ERK signaling pathway. In summary, our findings indicated that WA promotes the recovery of SCI via the protection of nerve cells and the prevention of apoptosis. Meanwhile, the anti-apoptotic effect of WA might be associated with the downregulation of the ERK signaling pathway, which could be one of the mechanisms of WA in the treatment of SCI.

BACKGROUND: The Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) has been reported to be correlated with long-term outcomes after gastrointestinal tumor surgery. However, to our knowledge, only a few studies have shown that the PNI is related to cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, we aimed to assess the association between the PNI and long-term outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: This was retrospective observational study. A total of 3561 patients with CAD after PCI were retrospectively enrolled in the CORFCHD-ZZ study from January 2013 to December 2017. The patients (3519) were divided into three groups according to PNI tertiles: the first tertile (PNI < 47.12, n = 1173), the second tertile (47.12 ≤ PNI < 51.50, n = 1185), and the third tertile (PNI ≥ 51.50, n = 1161). The mean follow-up time was 37.59 ± 22.24 months. The primary endpoint long-term mortality, including all-cause mortality (ACM) and cardiac mortality (CM).Secondary endpoints were major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs). RESULT: In our study, the incidences of ACM in the first, second, and third tertiles were 3.8%, 1.8% and 1.4%, respectively (P < 0.001). The incidences of CM occurring in the first, second, and third tertiles were 1.7%, 3.1% and 2.1%, respectively (P < 0.001).There was statistically significant different in primary endpoints incidence. MACEs occurred in 139 patients (11.8%) in the first tertile, 121 patients(11.1%) in the second tertile and 123 patients(10.8%) in the third tertile(P = 0.691). MACCEs occurred in 183 patients (15.6%) in the first tertile, 174 patients(14.7%) in the second tertile and 160 patients(13.85%) in the third tertile(P = 0.463).There was no statistically significant different in secondary endpoints incidence. Kaplan-Meier analyses showed that elevated PNI was significantly related to long-term CM (log rank, P < 0.001) and long-term ACM (log-rank, P < 0.001). Cox regression analyses suggested that compared with the patients in the first tertile, the risk of ACM was decreased to 60.9% (HR = 0.609, 95% CI: 0.398-0.932, P = 0.029) in the second tertile and 40.3%(HR = 0.403, 95% CI: 0.279-0.766, P = 0.003) in the third tertile, while the risk of CM was decreased to 58.8%(HR = 0.588, 95% CI: 0.321-0.969, P = 0.038) in the second tertile and 46.6%(HR = 0.466, 95% CI: 0.250-0.870, P = 0.017) in the third tertile. Multivariate Cox regression analyses showed that the PNI was an independent predictor of long-term ACM and CM. CONCLUSION: Our finding shown that PNI is an independent predictor in CAD patients after PCI,the higher the PNI, the less occurring adverse event. Therefore,PNI may be an new biomarker to predict long-term outcome of CAD patients after PCI.

Despite the rapid advances in the liver-on-a-chip platforms, it remains a daunting challenge to construct a biomimetic liver-on-a-chip for in vitro research. This study aimed to reconstruct the tissue-tissue interfaces based on bilayer microspheres and form vascularized liver tissue. Firstly, we designed a tri-vascular liver-on-a-chip (TVLOC) comprising a hepatic artery, a portal vein and a central vein, and theoretically analyzed the distribution of velocity and concentration fields in the culture area. Secondly, we designed a bilayer microsphere generating microsystem based on the coaxial confocal principle, which is primarily used to produce bilayer microspheres containing different kinds of cells. Finally, the bilayer microspheres were co-cultured with endothelial cells in the cell culture area of the TVLOC to form vascularized liver tissue, and the cell viability and vascular network growth were analyzed. The results revealed that the TVLOC designed in this study can provide a substance concentration gradient similar to that of the liver microenvironment, and the bilayer microspheres can form a three-dimensional (3D) orderly liver structure with endothelial cells. Such a liver-on-a-chip is capable of maintaining the function of hepatocytes (HCs) pretty well. This work provides full insights into further simulation of the liver-on-a-chip.

Sufficient bone volume is indispensable to achieve functional and aesthetic results in the fields of oral oncology, trauma, and implantology. Currently, guided bone regeneration (GBR) is widely used in reconstructing the alveolar ridge and repairing bone defects owing to its low technical sensitivity and considerable osteogenic effect. However, traditional barrier membranes such as collagen membranes or commercial titanium mesh cannot meet clinical requirements, such as lack of space-preserving ability, or may lead to more complications. With the development of digitalization and three-dimensional printing technology, the above problems can be addressed by employing customized barrier membranes to achieve space maintenance, precise predictability of bone graft, and optimization of patient-specific strategies. The article reviews the processes and advantages of three-dimensional computer-assisted surgery with GBR in maxillofacial reconstruction and alveolar bone augmentation; the properties of materials used in fabricating customized bone regeneration sheets; the promising bone regeneration potency of customized barrier membranes in clinical applications; and up-to-date achievements. This review aims to present a reference on the clinical aspects and future applications of customized barrier membranes.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a newly proposed definition of fatty liver disease (FLD) independent of excessive alcohol consumption (EAC) and hepatitis viral infection. Evidence on the mortality risk in different types of FLD [nonalcoholic FLD (NAFLD), alcoholic FLD (AFLD), and MAFLD] is sparse, hindering the identification of high-risk populations for preferential clinical surveillance. METHODS: A total of 11,000 participants in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were enrolled. Participants were categorized into three groups [FLD( - ), MAFLD( - ), and MAFLD( +)] according to FLD and MAFLD criteria, and further categorized into six groups by EAC. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard model was used to estimate the risk of all-cause, cardiovascular-related, and cancer-related mortality. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 23.2 years, a total of 3240 deaths were identified. Compared with FLD( - )/EAC( - ) participants, MAFLD( +) individuals had higher all-cause mortality risk [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.28, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.18-1.39] regardless of EAC status [MAFLD( +)/NAFLD: HR = 1.22, 95%CI = 1.11-1.34; MAFLD( +)/AFLD: HR = 1.83, 95%CI = 1.46-2.28], while not for MAFLD( - ) individuals. Furthermore, diabetes-driven-MAFLD had higher mortality risk (HR = 2.00, 95%CI = 1.77-2.27) followed by metabolic dysregulation-driven-MAFLD (HR = 1.30, 95%CI = 1.06-1.60) and overweight/obesity-driven-MAFLD (HR = 1.11, 95%CI = 1.00-1.22). Additionally, MAFLD( - ) participants with elevated fibrosis score were also associated with statistically significantly higher mortality risk (HR = 3.23, 95%CI = 1.63-6.40). CONCLUSIONS: Utilizing a representative sample of the US population, we proved the validity of MAFLD subtype and fibrosis score, rather than the traditional definition (NAFLD and AFLD), in the risk stratification of FLD patients. These findings may be applied to guide the determination of surveillance options for FLD patients.

Household animal fat has been linked to increased incidence of cancers compared with vegetable fat. However, few epidemiological studies have associated these two cooking oil types with precancerous genotoxic effects, such as occurrence of micronuclei (MN). This study aimed to explore the association between oral MN frequency and household cooking oil type and whether the association can be attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We collected information about individual cooking oil use, measured genotoxic effects by MN tests and urinary PAHs metabolites (OHPAHs) in 245 nonsmokers. The associations between household cooking oil type and MN frequency and OHPAHs were analyzed using generalized linear models (GLMs) and logistic regression models, evaluating odds ratios and coefficient (95% confidence intervals) (ORs, 95% Cls; ß, 95% Cls). The odds of animal fat consumers, rather than vegetable fat consumers, was positively associated with higher MN frequency (OR = 1.94, P < 0.05). The associations were discovered in participants only using kitchen ventilation (OR = 2.04, P < 0.05). Animal fat consumers had higher total OHPAHs than vegetable fat consumers (1.58 ± 0.22 mg/mol, Cr vs 1.20 ± 0.12 mg/mol, Cr; P = 0.028). Significant correlations were observed between total OHPAHs quartiles and increased MN frequency (ß = 0.38, P-trend = 0.026). After stratifying by household cooking oil type, sensitivity analyses showed that the positive association between total OHPAHs quartiles and increased MN frequency was only observed in animal fat consumers (ß = 0.61, P-trend = 0.030). In conclusion, usage of household animal fat was associated with an increased odds of oral MN frequency in Chinese nonsmokers and the odds correlated with increased PAHs exposure. This finding supplemented evidence associating cooking oil type with genotoxic effects and explained its association with PAHs exposure.
