RESUMO

Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) is part of lifelong learning required by ophthalmologists. Metacognition is a new area of educational research. It is important because metacognitive skills are essential in medical education and likely to improve effectiveness of CPD activities. We systematically searched PubMed using the terms "metacognition" and "CPD" or "continuing medical education (CME)" and found only 5 articles. These articles were supplemented by a broadbased review of published literature including educational psychology, across the continuum of medical education. We summarize the techniques that may improve metacognition in CPD: awareness of and instruction in metacognition, awareness and mitigation of cognitive errors, appropriate needs analysis, and choosing appropriate activities. Metacognition and learning of new surgical techniques, the role of portfolios, and the role of the educator are described. The evidence is weak however, and it is usually extrapolated to CPD activities from other fields. Ophthalmologists may be able to improve their metacognitive skills in the CPD context, but the evidence supporting this is of low quality.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report establishment of the Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute at Yaoundé, Cameroon, as an ophthalmology subspecialty patient care and training center in Central Africa. DESIGN: Perspective. METHODS: Assessment of unpublished and published material. RESULTS: To improve, preserve and restore eye health and vision in a region with world-high prevalence of functional vision impairment and blindness, the Africa Eye Foundation established the Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute as an ophthalmology subspecialty patient care center for all in need and a training center for ophthalmologists, ophthalmology subspecialists, and allied personnel. In 2017, the year of its inauguration and the first year of operation, the Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute provided ophthalmology subspecialty care to more than 25 000 patients and surgery for pediatric and adult cataract, glaucoma, retinal disease, oculoplastic disorders, and other vision-threatening conditions. Outreach programs extended care to an additional 2500 individuals in rural communities and 7 training courses were conducted for ophthalmologists and allied personnel. CONCLUSION: Through ophthalmology subspecialty patient care and the training of ophthalmologists and allied personnel, Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute is acting to enhance vision and the quality of life for individuals and families in all segments of society.

RESUMO

In the early 1900s, ophthalmologists became the first group of American physicians to lead the call for the establishment of higher standards in the practice of medicine. This movement for excellence in practice evolved into a program of board certification through the creation of what is today the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). Three organizations-the American Ophthalmological Society, the Section on Ophthalmology of the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology-are credited as the founders of the ABO. Representatives from these organizations were charged with overseeing the development of board certification programs from the ABO's inception in 1916 through 1982, when it became a fully autonomous organization.

RESUMO

Training in community eye health (CEH; public health applied to ophthalmology) complements clinical ophthalmology knowledge and enhances the physician's ability to meet the needs at the individual and community level in the context of VISION 2020. The upcoming version of the ophthalmological residency curriculum that was developed by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) includes a new, specific section on CEH. It has basic, standard, advanced and very advanced levels of goals (the last one is exclusively for fellows/master students), and provides a public health approach to the main causes of blindness and low vision. The number of individuals aged ≥60 years is increasing twice as fast as the number of ophthalmologists, and as this age group is more likely to become blind/visually impaired, accessibility to eye care in the near future might be suboptimal even in wealthier countries. In order to achieve VISION 2020 goals, it is necessary to train more ophthalmologists and other eye care workers. However, the adoption of CEH component of the ICO curriculum for ophthalmology residents will enable them to meet local needs for eye care.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe the emerging strategic global perspective of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) efforts in ophthalmic education. DESIGN: A global perspective describing how the development of sophisticated educational tools in tandem with information technology can revolutionize ophthalmic education worldwide. METHODS: Review of ICO educational tools, resources, and programs that are available to ophthalmic educators across the globe. RESULTS: With the explosive growth of the Internet, the ability to access medical information in the most isolated of locations is now possible. Through specific ICO initiatives, including the ICO curricula, the "Teaching the Teachers" program, and the launching of the new ICO Center for Ophthalmic Educators, the ICO is providing ophthalmic educators across the globe with access to standardized but customizable educational programs and tools to better train ophthalmologists and allied eye care professionals throughout the world. CONCLUSION: Access to educational tools and strengthening of global learning will help providers meet the goals of VISION 2020 and beyond in eliminating avoidable blindness. It is the intent of the ICO that its programs for ophthalmic educators, including conferences, courses, curricula, and online resources, result in better-trained ophthalmologists and eye care professionals worldwide.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To assess the current number of ophthalmologists practicing worldwide in 2010 and to create a system for maintaining, collecting and improving the accuracy of data on ophthalmologists per population, ophthalmologists performing surgery, growth rate of the profession, and the number of residents in training. METHODS: Between March 2010 and April 2010, the International Council of Ophthalmology emailed a standardised survey of 12 questions to 213 global ophthalmic societies. Missing data and additional information were gathered from direct correspondences with ophthalmologist contacts. RESULTS: The total number of ophthalmologists reported was 204,909. Data are presented for 193 countries. Information was obtained from 67 countries on the number of ophthalmologists doing surgery, entering practice, leaving practice, rate of growth and resident training. CONCLUSION: The survey results show that despite over 200,000 ophthalmologists worldwide, there is currently a significant shortfall of ophthalmologists in developing countries. Furthermore, although the number of practitioners is increasing in developed countries, the population aged 60+ is growing at twice the rate of the profession. To meet this widening gap between need and supply, it is necessary to aggressively train eye care teams now to alleviate the current and anticipated deficit of ophthalmologists worldwide.
