To effectively promote the implementation of interventions, the identification of high-risk groups and the characteristics of Clonorchis sinensis infection in endemic regions are needed. In a clonorchiasis-endemic area, local residents were randomly enrolled for helminth egg examination in June 2016. The prevalence in subpopulations as well as the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours and the factors influencing clonorchiasis in egg-positive populations were analysed. A total of 2282 local residents participated in the survey; the C. sinensis prevalence was 48.6% (1109 persons). A higher prevalence was found in males (62.6%) than in females (29.7%). People older than 30 years had the highest prevalence (52.7%-57.6%). Among the 888 persons who were infected with C. sinensis and participated the questionnaire investigation, 19.0% (169/888) knew that it could cause cancer. In addition, 60.6% of people reported that they intended to keep eating raw fish despite knowing the risk of infection. The two primary reasons for continuing to eat raw fish were the disease being regarded as not serious (38.3%) and the belief that anti-parasite medications are effective (39.6%). A total of 94.4% (797/844) of responders reported eating raw fish more frequently in the home than outside of the home. Our study revealed a notably high C. sinensis prevalence in the study area. Awareness of clonorchiasis disease severity should be increased among high-risk individuals and families in highly endemic areas.

High-intensity clonorchiasis infection is associated with serious outcomes, including cancer. Understanding the infection intensity of Clonorchis sinensis and its risk factors in local endemic regions could facilitate effective control measures. In a county located in a highly endemic area in Guangxi Province, P. R. China, local residents were randomly enrolled in the study; helminth egg examinations were performed with the Kato-Katz method, and the intensity of infection was identified as mild, moderate or heavy. Knowledge, attitudes, and high-risk behaviours were investigated among those infected with Clonorchis sinensis. A total of 2521 local residents participated in this study, and the Clonorchis sinensis-positive proportion was 28.9% (728 persons). Among the infected persons, the percentages of mild, moderate and heavy infections were 66.2%, 28.4% and 5.4%, respectively. Males experienced a higher proportion of moderate and heavy infections (37.5%) than females (18.1%) (p<0.05). The highest infection proportion among the different levels of infection intensity was identified among persons aged 30-59 years (15.7% for moderate and heavy infections). Among the 509 persons who reported eating raw fish, 302 persons (59.3%) had eaten raw fresh fish for more than 10 years, and 131 (25.7%) persons ate raw fish ≥12 times a year. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that eating raw fish 12-50 times in the last year (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.74, 95%CI: 1.09-2.80) and eating raw fish >50 times in the last year (aOR = 2.89, 95%CI: 1.20-7.50) were risk factors for high-intensity infections (moderate and heavy). The overall infection proportion was high in the study area, with a large group of residents experiencing high-intensity infections. High frequency of raw fish consumption was associated with high-intensity infections. Intervention strategies targeting people with a high frequency of raw fish consumption should be implemented to reduce the probability of severe consequences.

The ancestors of Gossypium arboreum and Gossypium herbaceum provided the A subgenome for the modern cultivated allotetraploid cotton. Here, we upgraded the G. arboreum genome assembly by integrating different technologies. We resequenced 243 G. arboreum and G. herbaceum accessions to generate a map of genome variations and found that they are equally diverged from Gossypium raimondii. Independent analysis suggested that Chinese G. arboreum originated in South China and was subsequently introduced to the Yangtze and Yellow River regions. Most accessions with domestication-related traits experienced geographic isolation. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified 98 significant peak associations for 11 agronomically important traits in G. arboreum. A nonsynonymous substitution (cysteine-to-arginine substitution) of GaKASIII seems to confer substantial fatty acid composition (C16:0 and C16:1) changes in cotton seeds. Resistance to fusarium wilt disease is associated with activation of GaGSTF9 expression. Our work represents a major step toward understanding the evolution of the A genome of cotton.

Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) is the most important natural fiber crop in the world. The overall genetic diversity among cultivated species of cotton and the genetic changes that occurred during their improvement are poorly understood. Here we report a comprehensive genomic assessment of modern improved upland cotton based on the genome-wide resequencing of 318 landraces and modern improved cultivars or lines. We detected more associated loci for lint yield than for fiber quality, which suggests that lint yield has stronger selection signatures than other traits. We found that two ethylene-pathway-related genes were associated with increased lint yield in improved cultivars. We evaluated the population frequency of each elite allele in historically released cultivar groups and found that 54.8% of the elite genome-wide association study (GWAS) alleles detected were transferred from three founder landraces: Deltapine 15, Stoneville 2B and Uganda Mian. Our results provide a genomic basis for improving cotton cultivars and for further evolutionary analysis of polyploid crops.

BACKGROUND: MYB family proteins are one of the most abundant transcription factors in the cotton plant and play diverse roles in cotton growth and evolution. Previously, few studies have been conducted in upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum. The recent release of the G. hirsutum genome sequence provides a great opportunity to identify and characterize the entire upland cotton MYB protein family. RESULTS: In this study, we undertook a comprehensive genome-wide characterization and expression analysis of the MYB transcription factor family during cotton fiber development. A total of 524 non-redundant cotton MYB genes, among 1986 MYB and MYB-related putative proteins, were identified and classified into four subfamilies including 1R-MYB, 2R-MYB, 3R-MYB, and 4R-MYB. Based on phylogenetic tree analysis, MYB transcription factors were divided into 16 subgroups. The results showed that the majority (69.1 %) of GhMYBs genes belong to the 2R-MYB subfamily in upland cotton. CONCLUSION: Our comparative genomics analysis has provided novel insights into the roles of MYB transcription factors in cotton fiber development. These results provide the basis for a greater understanding of MYB regulatory networks and to develop new approaches to improve cotton fiber development.

OBJECTIVE: To acknowledge the epidemiology of gastroenteritis outbreaks caused by noroviruses and their genotypes. METHODS: Epidemiologic data and specimens were collected from 19 gastroenteritis outbreaks. 201 specimens were detected for norovirus, rotavirus, astrovirus, adenovirus and sapovirus by RT-PCR methods and PCR products were sequenced. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis were performed by Clustal X 1.83 and MEGA 4.0 programs. RESULTS: Noroviruses were one of the most predominant pathogens causing viral gastroenteritis outbreaks (12 of 19 outbreaks, accounting for 63.2%). Variant GII-4/2006b was the predominant strain responsible for 11 of the 12 NV-associated outbreaks. Other genotypes would include GII-17, GII-6 and GII-3. The NV-associated gastroenteritis outbreaks occurred mainly in winter and spring between December 2006 and April 2007. These gastroenteritis outbreaks caused by noroviruses would involve all age groups in various locations. Meantime, 2 out of 12 outbreaks were caused by norovirus or other viruses. In addition, multiple viruses and multiple genotypes of noroviruses were found in the same outbreak. CONCLUSION: Noroviruses were one of the most major pathogens causing gastroenteritis outbreaks while GII-4/2006b variant was identified as the predominant strain in China.

OBJECTIVE: By analyzing the group variations of Chinese school-aged youth, to gather scientific bases for establishing a screening norm for obesity. METHODS: More than 228,250 students aged 6 through 18 years participated in the 2000 National Surveillance on Students Health and Physical Fitness were enrolled as subjects, and were divided into various groups. The P(5), P(50) and P(95) of BMI were calculated and compared. RESULTS: The differences of BMI among various groups were mainly reflected in the P95 high level of BMI, e.g., the means of BMI of boys aged 13 in large cities and in relatively underdeveloped rural areas were 25.7 and 21.1 with a difference of 4.6, and 22.8 and 20.3 for girls aged 11 with a difference of 2.5. Evident north-south differences were also found, especially during adolescent growth spurt. The means of BMI of those lived in the north and south China were 22.3 and 21.0 for girls aged 11 (difference 1.3), and 25.4 and 23.5 for boys aged 14 (difference 1.9), respectively. These findings clearly showed that much more obese youth exist in the metropolis than in the rural areas, and in the north than in the south China. The difference in BMI between the developed areas and developing areas could be found in early school ages. They were 22.5 and 16.7 for boys aged 7, and 19.8 and 16.7 for girls aged 7, respectively, which is a dominant difference among Chinese youth groups. However, that the BMI differences in the P(5) level were not as evident as in the high level means that malnutrition and under-weight were still popular in all Chinese youth groups. CONCLUSION: In making a national norm for screening obesity in China, we'd better take high-level growth population as reference, to adapt the secular growth changes of Chinese youth. However, the huge urban-rural, north-south, developed-developing differences shown in this study should also be taken into full consideration, in order to make the screen norm be accepted by most of the Chinese youth groups.
