RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Primary cardiac tumors, while rare, present significant clinical challenges due to their diverse pathology and presentation. Lung cancer frequently metastasizes to the heart; however, cases involving primary cardiac tumors of different origins alongside primary lung cancer are exceedingly rare in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 53-year-old female who presented with hemoptysis and was subsequently diagnosed with a left atrial myxoma, pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma, and a thymic cyst. This coexistence of multiple non-homologous tumors in a single patient is exceedingly rare. CONCLUSION: This case underscores the complexity of diagnosing and managing patients with multiple distinct tumors. The simultaneous occurrence of a primary cardiac myxoma, pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma, and thymic cyst is unprecedented, providing valuable insights for future clinical practice.

RESUMO

Objectives: Horner syndrome (HS) is a rare complication of thyroid surgery. However, the relationship between the occurrence of HS and thyroid upper pole injury is still not completely clear, and there are only few reports. Case presentation: A 24-year-old female underwent endoscopic thyroidectomy for thyroid papillary carcinoma. The intraoperative examination found that the upper pole of the thyroid was bleeding. During hemostasis, the ultrasonic knife consciously peeled too deep and stopped. The patient developed HS immediately after operation. We analyzed the association between deep dissection of the upper thyroid pole and an increase in the HS incidence rate through literature searches and anatomical relationships. Conclusions: Our case report discussed the potential relationship between the degree of thyroid upper pole dissection and the occurrence of HS in routine thyroid surgery, and provided a warning for the degree of thyroid upper pole dissection in the clinic to avoid HS.

RESUMO

Objective: It is crucial to diagnose lymph node (LN) metastases (LNM) before or during thyroid carcinoma surgery. Measurement of thyroglobulin (Tg) in the fine needle aspirate washout (FNA-Tg) is useful to assist in the diagnosis of LNM for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). This study aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of a new technique based on a colloidal gold-based immunochromatographic assay (GICA) for intraoperative FNA-Tg in diagnosing LNM. Clinical trial information: This study is registered with chictr.org.cn, ID: ChiCTR2200063561 (registered 11 September, 2022). Methods: This prospective study enrolled 51 PTC patients who underwent cervical LN dissection. A total of 150 LNs dissected from the central and lateral compartments were evaluated by FNA-Tg-GICA at three different time points and compared with frozen sections and the conventional Tg measurement method electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA). Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and area under the curve (AUC), cutoff value to discriminate benign and malignant LNs, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were provided. Results: The cutoff value of FNA-Tg to predict LNM was 110.83 ng/mL for ECLIA and 13.19 ng/mL, 38.69 ng/mL, and 77.17 ng/mL for GICA at 3, 10, and 15 min, respectively. There was no significant difference between the AUCs of GICA at different time points compared to using ECLIA and frozen sections. Besides, the diagnostic performance of GICA and ECLIA showed no significant difference in evaluating LNM from central and lateral compartments or between the TgAb-positive subgroup and TgAb-negative subgroup. Conclusion: GICA is a promising method for intraoperative FNA-Tg measurement and has high value in predicting LNM. It may be a novel alternative or supplementary method to frozen section or ECLIA.

RESUMO

Myocardial remodeling and dysfunction are commonly observed in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Aerobic exercise can partly alleviate diabetes-induced myocardial dysfunction through its antioxidant actions. MOTS-c is a potential exercise mimic. This study aimed to investigate the effects of MOTS-c on improving diabetic heart function and its mechanism and to identify whether MOTS-c improved antioxidant defenses due to aerobic exercise. Herein, we established a rat model of T2DM induced by high-fat diet combined with a low-dose streptozotocin injection. Interventions were performed using intraperitoneal injections of MOTS-c (i.p. 0.5 mg/kg/day, 7 days/week) or aerobic exercise training (treadmill, 20 m/min, 60 min/day, 5 days/week) for 8 weeks. Myocardial ultrastructure was assessed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), myocardial lipid peroxidation levels (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and catalase (CAT) levels were assessed using colorimetric methods, and molecular analyses including MOTS-c, Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), Nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK)and phospho-AMPK (p-AMPK) were examined using Western blot. The results showed that MOTS-c, with or without exercise, reduced myocardial ultrastructural damage and improved glucolipid metabolism and cardiac function in T2DM. Furthermore, MOTS-c increased antioxidant markers such as SOD, CAT, and the protein expression of myocardial MOTS-c, Keap1, Nrf2, and p-AMPK. MOTS-c with exercise treatment reduced myocardial MDA and increased p-AMPK significantly comparing to only exercise or MOTS-c alone. Our findings suggest that MOTS-c may be a helpful supplement for overcoming exercise insufficiency and improving myocardial structure and function in diabetes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The ratio of lymphocytes to monocytes (LMR) has been shown to be an effective predictor of gastric cancer prognosis. However, its predictive accuracy for signet ring gastric cancer is currently not well understood. AIM: To evaluate the prognosis predictive accuracy of preoperative LMR in signet ring gastric cancer. METHODS: A total of 212 signet ring gastric cancer patients admitted at the Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, from January 2012 to December 2016 were enrolled in the study. The prognosis predictive accuracy of preoperative LMR was explored based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic. Factors that significantly affect the survival of patients were identified using single factor analysis, and those that were independently associated with signet ring gastric cancer were identified through multivariate analysis. RESULTS: The results of the single factor analysis revealed a strong correlation between the survival of signet ring gastric cancer patients and several factors, including tumor invasion (χ2 = 49.726; P < 0.001), lymph node metastasis (χ2 = 30.269; P < 0.001), pTNM stage (χ2 = 49.322; P < 0.001), surgical approach (χ2 = 8.489; P = 0.004), age (t = -2.213; P < 0.028), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) (Z = -3.265; P = 0.001), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (Z = -2.196; P = 0.028), LMR (Z = -2.226; P = 0.026), ALB (t = 3.284; P = 0.001), prognostic nutritional index (t = -3.789; P < 0.001) and FIB (Z = -3.065; P = 0.002). Furthermore, the multivariate analysis further demonstrated that age (HR: 0.563, 95%CI: 0.363-0.873), tumor invasion depth (HR: 0.226, 95%CI: 0.098-0.520), pTNM stage (HR: 0.444, 95%CI: 0.255-0.771), preoperative CEA level (HR: 0.597, 95%CI: 0.386-8.790), and preoperative LMR level (HR: 1.776, 95%CI: 1.150-2.741) were independent factors influencing the prognosis of signet ring gastric cancer. CONCLUSION: In signet ring gastric cancer patients, a low preoperative LMR level predicts poor prognosis. The death risk ratio of the low LMR group compared to the high LMR group is 1.776.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disease in women of reproductive age, with complex pathological symptoms and mechanisms. This study explored the mechanism of action of Chao Nang Qing prescription (CNQP) in PCOS. METHODS: CNQP-medicated serum was prepared for culturing KGN granulosa cells. GATA3 knockdown, MYCT1 overexpression, and MYCT1 knockdown vectors were constructed to transfect KGN cells. Cell proliferation and apoptosis, as well as the expression of autophagy-related LC3-II/I, Beclin-1, and p62, were analyzed. ChIP was used to detect the binding of GATA3 and the MYCT1 promoter, and dual-luciferase reporter assay was used to analyze the influence of GATA3 on MYCT1 promoter activity. RESULTS: CNQP treatment reduced proliferation, increased apoptosis, elevated LC3-II/I, Beclin-1, GATA3, and MYCT1 expression, and decreased p62 expression in KGN cells. GATA3 bound to the MYCT1 promoter to promote MYCT1 expression. MYCT1 overexpression impeded proliferation and stimulated apoptosis and autophagy in KGN cells. Compared to CNQP treatment alone, GATA3 or MYCT1 knockdown before CNQP treatment promoted proliferation and reduced apoptosis and autophagy in KGN cells. CONCLUSION: CNQP may modulate KGN cell activity by upregulating GATA3 and MYCT1 expression, thereby slowing down the progression of PCOS.

RESUMO

The recently constructed mutant libraries of diploid crops by the CRISPR-Cas9 system have provided abundant resources for functional genomics and crop breeding. However, because of the genome complexity, it is a big challenge to accomplish large-scale targeted mutagenesis in polyploid plants. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of using a pooled CRISPR library to achieve genome-scale targeted editing in an allotetraploid crop of Brassica napus A total of 18,414 sgRNAs were designed to target 10,480 genes of interest, and afterward, 1104 regenerated transgenic plants harboring 1088 sgRNAs were obtained. Editing interrogation results revealed that 93 of the 178 genes were identified as mutated, thus representing an editing efficiency of 52.2%. Furthermore, we have discovered that Cas9-mediated DNA cleavages tend to occur at all the target sites guided by the same individual sgRNA, a novel finding in polyploid plants. Finally, we show the strong capability of reverse genetic screening for various traits with the postgenotyped plants. Several genes, which might dominate the fatty acid profile and seed oil content and have yet to be reported, were unveiled from the forward genetic studies. Our research provides valuable resources for functional genomics, elite crop breeding, and a good reference for high-throughput targeted mutagenesis in other polyploid plants.

RESUMO

Background: Intraoperative hypotension (IOH) is a common side effect of non-cardiac surgery that might induce poor postoperative outcomes. The relationship between the IOH and severe postoperative complications is still unclear. Thus, we summarized the existing literature to evaluate whether IOH contributes to developing severe postoperative complications during non-cardiac surgery. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and the CBM from inception to 15 September 2022. The primary outcomes were 30-day mortality, acute kidney injury (AKI), major adverse cardiac events (myocardial injury or myocardial infarction), postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), and postoperative delirium (POD). Secondary outcomes included surgical-site infection (SSI), stroke, and 1-year mortality. Results: 72 studies (3 randomized; 69 non-randomized) were included in this study. Low-quality evidence showed IOH resulted in an increased risk of 30-day mortality (OR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.30-2.64; P < .001), AKI (OR, 2.69; 95% CI, 2.15-3.37; P < .001), and stroke (OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.21-1.46; P < .001) after non-cardiac surgery than non-IOH. Very low-quality evidence showed IOH was associated with a higher risk of myocardial injury (OR, 2.00; 95% CI, 1.17-3.43; P = .01), myocardial infarction (OR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.41-3.16; P < .001), and POD (OR, 2.27; 95% CI, 1.53-3.38; P < .001). Very low-quality evidence showed IOH have a similar incidence of POCD (OR, 2.82; 95% CI, 0.83-9.50; P = .10) and 1-year-mortality (OR, 1.66; 95% CI, 0.65-4.20; P = .29) compared with non-IOH in non-cardiac surgery. Conclusion: Our results suggest IOH was associated with an increased risk of severe postoperative complications after non-cardiac surgery than non-IOH. IOH is a potentially avoidable hazard that should be closely monitored during non-cardiac surgery.

RESUMO

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is a rare, cyanotic and critical congenital heart disease where the entire left and right pulmonary veins fail to drain into the left atrium directly. Also, TAPVC-induced tissue hypoxia gradually worsens after birth. Thus, timely surgical repairs are recommended once diagnosed, particularly with pulmonary venous drainage obstruction(s). Nonetheless, in sporadic cases, patients with TAPVC survive to adulthood with no surgical treatment. Herein, we report a 46-year-old female with TAPVC, where the four pulmonary veins drain into to the innominate vein (IV) via the vertical vein. The patient developed palpitations and non-anginal chest pain following routine activities for over three months. The patient had a successful surgical correction with excellent postoperative recovery.

RESUMO

Abstract Objective: To investigate the optimal timing of initial intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment in Kawasaki disease (KD) patients. Methods: KD patients were classified as the early group (day 1-4), conventional group (day 5-7), conventional group (day 8-10), and late group (after day 10). Differences among the groups were analyzed by ANOVA and Chi-square analysis. Predictors of IVIG resistance and the optimal cut-off value were determined by multiple logistic regression analyses and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: There were no significant differences in IVIG resistance among the 4 groups (p = 0.335). The sensitivity analysis also confirmed no difference in the IVIG resistance between those who started the initial IVIG ≤ day 7 of illness and those who received IVIG >day 7 of illness (p = 0.761). In addition, patients who received IVIG administration more than 7 days from the onset had a higher proportion of coronary artery abnormalities (p = 0.034) and longer length of hospitalization (p = 0.033) than those who started IVIG administration less than 7 days. The optimal cut-off value of initial IVIG administration time for predicting IVIG resistance was >7 days, with a sensitivity of 75.25% and specificity of 82.41%. Conclusions: IVIG therapy within 7 days of illness is found to be more effective for reducing the risk of coronary artery abnormalities than those who received IVIG >day 7 of illness. IVIG treatment within the 7 days of illness seems to be the optimal therapeutic window of IVIG. However, further prospective studies with long-term follow-up are required.

RESUMO

The development of tunable molecule separation membranes requires materials with remote controllability and ultra-high separation capability. In this paper, a novel photoswitchable metal organic framework (MOF) thin film (Cu2(AzoBPDC)2) was prepared by liquid phase epitaxial layer-by-layer assembly to realize the reversible remote-controlled switching. The azobenzene side groups in the Cu2(AzoBPDC)2 thin film showed excellent reversible photoswitching performance under UV (365 nm) and Vis (450 nm) irradiation, achieving the remote-controlled mode of the diffusion flux of polar gas molecules in the MOF thin film.

RESUMO

AIMS: To determine the effects of the mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S ribosomal RNA type-c (MOTS-c) and aerobic exercise on cardiac structure and function and explore the role of neuregulin-1 (NRG1)- ErbB2 receptor tyrosine kinase 4(ErbB4)- CCAAT-enhancer binding protein ß (C/EBPß) in cardiac physiological adaptation induced by MOTS-c and aerobic training. MAIN METHODS: We used Hematoxylin-Eosin staining(HE)and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) to observe the cardiac myocardial structure, carotid artery catheterization to test cardiac function, and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blotting to describe the changes of NRG1, ErbB4, C/EBPß, and Gata in cardiac physiological adaptation. KEY FINDINGS: MOTS-c and aerobic training significantly increased heart weight and heart weight index (HWI) (all p < 0.05). Aerobic exercise and MOTS-c treatment thickened myocardial fibers, with a tendency of hypertrophy. Heart rate (HR) (p < 0.001, p = 0.010, p = 0.011), the isovolumic diastolic time constant (Tau) (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001) in exercised (E), MOST-c treated (M) and their combination (ME) decreased significantly, while the dP/dtmax (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.039) and dP/dtmin (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.001) in groups E, M and ME were significantly higher than those in group C, but EDP (p = 0.903, p = 0.708, p = 0.744) remained unchanged. Moreover, C/EBPß gene levels were significantly decreased in the differential gene expression between groups C and M transcriptomics sequencing. The levels of ErbB4 mRNA (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001) and Gata4 mRNA (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.001) in groups E, M and ME increased significantly, while C/EBPß mRNA expression decreased significantly (p < 0.001, p = 0.002, p = 0.001), which was consistent with the results of transcriptome sequencing. NRG1 mRNA in group E was significantly higher than that in group C (p = 0.003), but there was no significant difference between groups M and ME (p = 0.804, p = 0.320). The protein expression of NRG1 (p = 0.026, p < 0.001, p < 0.001), ErbB4 (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001) and Gata4 (p = 0.014, p < 0.001, p = 0.006) in groups E, M and ME increased significantly, while C/EBPß decreased significantly (p < 0.001, p = 0.001, p = 0.002). SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings suggest that MOTS-c and aerobic exercise had similar effects, improving myocardial morphology and structure and enhancing cardiac function through activation of the NRG1-ErbB4-C/EBPß pathway.

RESUMO

Abstract Objective Since coronary artery lesions (CALs) are the most severe complication of Kawasaki disease (KD), clinically speaking, early prediction of CALs is crucial. The authors aimed to investigate the predictive value of C-reactive protein (CRP) in predicting CALs in KD patients. Methods KD patients were divided into the CALs group and the non-CALs group. The clinical and laboratory parameters were collected and compared. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the independent risk factors of CALs. The receiver operating characteristic curve was applied to determine the optimal cut-off value. Results 851 KD patients who met the inclusion criteria were studied, including 206 in the CALs group and 645 in the non-CALs group. Children in the CALs group had significantly higher CRP levels than the non-CALs group (p< 0.05). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that incomplete KD, male, lower hemoglobin, and higher CRP were independent risk factors for predicting CAL (all p< 0.05). The optimal cut-off value of initial serum CRP for predicting CALs was 105.5 mg/L, with a sensitivity of 47.57% and a specificity of 69.61%. In addition, KD patients with high CRP (≥105.5 mg/L) had a higher occurrence of CALs than those with low CRP (<105.5 mg/L) (33% vs 19%, p< 0.001). Conclusion The incidence of CALs was significantly higher in patients with high CRP. CRP is an independent risk factor for CALs formation and may be useful for predicting CALs in KD patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Globally, the burden of endometrial endometrioid carcinoma (EEC) increases annually. However, the histological grade of EEC remains unelucidated. We developed a novel model for predicting lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with endometrioid carcinoma (EC), which has not been well established. METHODS: A total of 344 patients with EEC were classified into training (n = 226) and validation (n = 118) cohorts. To develop a nomogram to predict LNM, independent predictors were defined using univariate and multivariate regression analyses. The calibration curve, area under the decision curve analysis (DCA), and receiver operating characteristic curve were used to evaluate the performance of the nomogram. RESULTS: Independent predictors of LNM in EC were identified in the univariate analysis, including mitosis; microcystic, elongated, and fragmented patterns; lymphovascular invasion (LVI); necrosis; and high-grade pattern. Mitosis, LVI, and high-grade pattern remained independent predictors of LNM in multivariate analysis. An LNM nomogram that was constructed by incorporating the five predictors showed reliable discrimination and calibration. DCA showed that the LNM nomogram scoring system had significant clinical application value. In addition, a high nomogram score (score > 150) was a significant prognosticator for survival in both LNM-positive and LNM-negative ECs. CONCLUSIONS: Our novel predictive model for LNM in patients with EC has the potential to assist surgeons in making optimal treatment decisions.

RESUMO

Background: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of birth defect. Most patients with CHD require surgery, and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is the most common surgery performed. Methods: The present study utilized weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to identify key inflammation genes after CPB for CHD. The GSE132176 dataset was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus(GEO) database for WGCNA to identify the modules closely related to clinical traits. Disease enrichment, functional annotation and pathway enrichment were performed on genes in the module closely related to clinical traits using Enrichr and Metascape. Immune infiltration analysis was also performed on the training dataset using CIBERSORT. Finally, we identified hub genes using high gene significance (GS), high module members (MMs) and Cytoscape, and we verified the hub genes using an independent dataset and Western blot analysis. Results: WGCNA showed that the brown module with 461 genes had the highest correlation to CHD after CPB. Functional annotation and pathway enrichment analysis were performed using Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses, which showed that genes in the brown module were enriched in inflammation-related pathways. In the disease enrichment analysis, genes in the brown module were enriched for inflammatory diseases. After the 30 most highly associated brown intramodular genes were screened, a protein-protein interaction network was constructed using the STRING online analysis website. The protein-protein interaction results were then calculated using 12 algorithms in the cytoHubba plugin of Cytoscape software. The final result showed that CDKN1A was the fundamental gene of post-CPB for CHD. Using another independent validation dataset (GSE12486), we confirmed that CDKN1A was significantly differentially expressed between preoperative and postoperative CPB (Wilcoxon, P = 0.0079; T-test, P = 0.006). In addition, CDKN1A expression was elevated in eosinophils, neutrophils, memory CD4 T cells and activated mast cells. Western blot analysis showed that the expression of CDKN1A protein was significantly higher postoperative CPB than preoperative CPB. Moreover, CDKN1A was mainly related to inflammation. Conclusion: In summary, we found a relationship between CDKN1A and inflammation after CPB for congenital heart disease by WGCNA, experiments and various bioinformatics methods. Thus, CDKN1A maybe serve as a biomarker or therapeutic target for accurate diagnosis and treatment of inflammation after CPB in the future.

RESUMO

Pulmonary sequestration with congenital heart disease is a rare congenital malformation. Herein, we report a 19-month-old toddler diagnosed with right lower pulmonary sequestration, right pulmonary artery dysplasia, right lower pulmonary venous ectopic drainage, and a right-sided heart with an atrial septal defect. The pulmonary sequestration had a rare blood supply, such as confluent arteries with the renal vessels draining into the hepatic veins. Arterial embolization and atrial defect closure were used to treat the rare congenital malformation with satisfactory results.

RESUMO

Percutaneous closure of atrial septal defect (ASD) has emerged as a feasible alternative strategy to surgical repair in many cardiac centers worldwide. Occluder recanalization due to device failure is a rare and severe complication that often occurs within weeks to years after ASD closure. We reported a rare ultra-long-term complication of occluder recanalization due to delayed spontaneous perforation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membrane of ASD occluder after 18 years of ASD closure. Surgical removal of the faulty device and reconstruction of the atrial septum with a bovine pericardial patch was performed. The patient was discharged and recovered uneventfully without syncope or residual shunt. The cause of this rare complication of spontaneous PVA membrane perforation of the occluder has not been fully detected. To our knowledge, this is the first report about PVA membrane perforation of an occluder that occurred soon after ASD closure.

RESUMO

Prodigiosin (PG), a red linear tripyrrole pigment produced by Serratia marcescens, has attracted attention due to its immunosuppressive, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. Although many studies have been used to dissect the biosynthetic pathways and regulatory network of prodigiosin production in S. marcescens, few studies have been focused on improving prodigiosin production through metabolic engineering in this strain. In this study, transcription factor engineering and promoter engineering was used to promote the production of prodigiosin in S. marcescens JNB5-1. Firstly, through construing of a Tn5G transposon insertion library of strain JNB5-1, it was found that the DNA-binding response regulator BVG89_19895 (OmpR) can promote prodigiosin synthesis in this strain. Then, using RNA-Seq analysis, reporter green fluorescent protein analysis and RT-qPCR analysis, the promoter P17 (P RplJ ) was found to be a strong constitutive promoter in strain JNB5-1. Finally, the promoter P17 was used for overexpressing of prodigiosin synthesis activator OmpR and PsrA in strain JNB5-1 and a recombinant strain PG-6 was obtained. Shake flask analysis showed that the prodigiosin titer of this strain was increased to 10.25 g/L, which was 1.62-times that of the original strain JNB5-1 (6.33 g/L). Taken together, this is the first well-characterized constitutive promoter library from S. marcescens, and the transcription factor engineering and promoter engineering can be also useful strategies to improve the production of other high value-added products in S. marcescens.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Horner syndrome (HS) is caused by damage to the cervical sympathetic nerve. HS is a rare complication after thyroidectomy. The main manifestations of HS include miosis and ptosis of the eyelids, which seriously affect esthetics and quality of life. At present, there is a lack of research on HS after thyroidectomy, and its etiology is not completely clear. This review aimed to evaluate how to reduce the incidence of HS and promote the recovery from HS as well as to provide a reference for the protection of cervical sympathetic nerves during surgery. RESULTS: HS caused by thyroid surgery is not particularly common, but it is still worthy of our attention. After searching with "Horner Syndrome," "Thyroid" as keywords, a total of 22 related cases were screened in PubMed. The results showed that open surgery, endoscopy, microwave ablation, and other surgical methods may have HS after operation. In addition, the statistics of 1213 thyroid surgeries in our hospital showed that the incidence of HS after endoscopic surgery (0.39%) was slightly higher than that after open surgery (0.29%). Further, this review analyzed potential causes of HS after thyroidectomy, so as to provide a theoretical basis for reducing its incidence. CONCLUSION: Preventing HS during thyroidectomy is a difficult problem. The close and highly variable anatomical relationship between the thyroid and cervical sympathetic nerves increases the risk of sympathetic nerve damage during thyroidectomy. Surgery and the use of energy equipment are also closely related to the occurrence of HS.
