RESUMO

Iron-nanoparticles (Fe-NPs) are increasingly been utilized in environmental applications due to their efficacy and strong catalytic activities. The novelty of nanoparticle science had attracted many researchers and especially for their green synthesis, which can effectively reuse biological resources during the polymerization reactions. Thus, the synthesis of Fe-NPs utilizing plant extracts could be considered as the eco-friendly, simple, rapid, energy-efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective. The green synthesis route can be recognized as a practical, valuable, and economically effective alternative for large-scale production. During the production process, some biomolecules present in the extracts undergo metal salts reduction, which can serve as both a capping and reducing mechanism, enhancing the reactivity and stability of green-synthesized Fe-NPs. The diversity of species provided a wide range of potential sources for green synthesis of Fe-NPs. With improved understanding of the specific biomolecules involved in the bioreduction and stabilization processes, it will become easier to identify and utilize new, potential plant materials for Fe-NPs synthesis. Newly synthesized Fe-NPs require different characterization techniques such as transmission electron microscope, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, and X-ray absorption fine structure, etc, for the determination of size, composition, and structure. This review described and assessed the recent advancements in understanding green-synthesized Fe-NPs derived from plant-based material. Detailed information on various plant materials suitable of yielding valuable biomolecules with potential diverse applications in environmental safety. Additionally, this review examined the characterization techniques employed to analyze Fe-NPs, their stability, accumulation, mobility, and fate in the environment. Holistically, the review assessed the applications of Fe-NPs in remediating wastewaters, organic residues, and inorganic contaminants. The toxicity of Fe-NPs was also addressed; emphasizing the need to refine the synthesis of green Fe-NPs to ensure safety and environmental friendliness. Moving forward, the future challenges and opportunities associated with the green synthesis of Fe-NPs would motivate novel research about nanoparticles in new directions.

Objective The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a professionalism program by conducting focus group discussions (FGDs). The research focuses on understanding how the program influences the development of professionalism skills among medical students, as well as their perceptions and experiences regarding the program. The study's objectives revolve around identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the program from the perspective of the students. Methods This was a qualitative study done after obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Committee, Islamic International Medical College. Students of 4th year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS; 56 students) were selected for the study. A convenience sampling technique was used to select the participants for FGDs. Seven separate FGDs were conducted, with eight participants in each group. All the FGDs were audiotaped. Data were transcribed and translated. Data were analyzed using the thematic analysis on Atlas. Both obvious and hidden content were analyzed. Codes and themes were identified, which were then finalized with consensus. Codes were then categorized into sub-themes, and finally, themes were generated. Results Participants identified the problems associated with applying professionalism during FGDs. These challenges encompassed hefty workloads and a perceived disparity between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation. The students highlighted the importance of practical teaching methods, the cultivation of role models, the alignment of curriculum with real-world experiences, and the revision of assessment methods. This study analyzes the obstacles and potential advantages associated with professionalism education and presents significant perspectives on improving it for upcoming healthcare practitioners. Conclusion Professionalism is a crucial component, and each graduate of a medical school should be fully qualified as a professional after graduation. As we want our future doctors to be skilled at both professional qualities and diagnosis, it is crucial that medical institutions teach professionalism.

Cancer remains a global health burden prompting affordable, target-oriented, and safe chemotherapeutic agents to reduce its incidence rate worldwide. In this study, a rapid, cost-effective, and green synthesis of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) has been carried out; Ex vivo and in vivoevaluation of their safety and anti-tumor efficacy compared to doxorubicin (DOX), a highly efficient breast anti-cancer agent but limited by severe cardiotoxicity in many patients.Thereby,TiO2 NPs were eco-friendly synthetized using aqueous leaf extract of the tropical medicinal shrub Zanthoxylum armatum as a reducing agent. Butanol was used as a unique template. TiO2 NPs were physically characterized by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) as routine state-of-the art techniques. The synthesized TiO2 NPs were then evaluated for their cytotoxicity (by MTT, FACS, and oxidative stress assays) in 4T1 breast tumor cells, and their hemocompatibility (by hemolysis assay). In vivo anti-tumor efficacy and safety of the TiO2 NPs were further assessed using subcutaneous 4T1 breast BALB/c mouse tumor model.The greenly prepared TiO2 NPs were small, spherical, and crystalline in nature. Interestingly, they were hemocompatible and elicited a strong DOX-like concentration-dependent cytotoxicity-induced apoptosis both ex vivo and in vivo (with a noticeable tumor volume reduction). The underlying molecular mechanism was, at least partially, mediated through reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation (lipid peroxidation). Unlike DOX (P < 0.05), it is important to mention that no cardiotoxicity or altered body weight were observed in both the TiO2 NPs-treated tumor-bearing mouse group and the PBS-treated mouse group (P > 0.05). Taken together, Z. armatum-derived TiO2 NPs are cost-effective, more efficient, and safer than DOX. The present findings shall prompt clinical trials using green TiO2 NPs, at least as a possible alternative modality to DOX for effective breast cancer therapy.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a skeletal dysplasia characterized by brittle bones and extraskeletal manifestations. The disease phenotype varies greatly. Most commonly, OI arises from monoallelic mutations in one of the two genes encoding type I collagen, COL1A1 and COL1A2 and is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Here, we describe a consanguineous family with autosomal recessive OI caused by a novel homozygous glycine substitution in COL1A2, NM_000089.3: c.604G>A, p.(Gly202Ser), detected by whole-genome sequencing. The index patient is a 31-year-old Greek woman with severe skeletal fragility. She had mild short stature, low bone mineral density of the lumbar spine and blue sclerae. She had sustained multiple long bone and vertebral fractures since childhood and had been treated with bisphosphonates for several years. She also had an affected sister with similar clinical manifestations. Interestingly, the parents and one sister, all carriers of the COL1A2 glycine mutation, did not have manifestations of OI. In summary, we report on autosomal recessive OI caused by a homozygous glycine-to-serine substitution in COL1A2, leading to severe skeletal fragility. The mutation carriers lacked OI manifestations. This family further expands the complex genetic spectrum of OI and underscores the importance of genetic evaluation for correct genetic counselling.
