Background and Objectives: This retrospective cohort study analyzes mechanical complications in hip fracture surgery using the Trochanteric Fixation Nail-Advanced (TFNA) implant. It investigates the correlation of these complications with demographic, intraoperative, and radiological factors, aiming to identify associated risk factors and suggest improvements in clinical surveillance and treatment strategies. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 253 patients diagnosed with pertrochanteric hip fractures treated between 2017 and 2021, with 126 meeting the criteria for a minimum 6-month follow-up. Data on demographics, American Anesthesia Association Classification (ASA), comorbidities, AO/OTA [AO (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen)/OTA (Orthopedic Trauma Association)] fracture classification, procedural details, and time to failure were collected. Radiographs were evaluated for reduction quality, the tip-apex distance (TAD), progressive varus deviation, and identification of mechanical complications. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. Results: The predominant AO/OTA fracture classification was 31A2 in 67 cases (52.7%). Reduction quality was deemed good or acceptable in 123 cases (97.6%). The mean time to failure was 4.5 months (range: 2.2-6). The average TAD was 18 mm (range: 1.2-36), with a mean progressive varus deviation of 2.44° (range: 1.30-4.14). A good or acceptable reduction quality was observed in 97.6% of cases. Mechanical complications occurred in 21.4% of patients, with significant associations found with the lateral cortex fracture, use of a TFNA implant with a 130° angle, open reduction, and absence of prior osteoporosis treatment. Conclusions: The study provides insights into mechanical complications in proximal femur fractures treated with the TFNA nail, emphasizing the need for enhanced clinical and radiographic surveillance, especially in patients without osteoporosis treatment. Our findings support the necessity for further clinical studies comparing these outcomes with other implant designs and underscore the importance of personalized treatment strategies to reduce complication rates.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes, complications, and mortality of patients with intertrochanteric hip fracture treated with dynamic hip screw (DHS) vs. trochanteric fixation nail advance (TFNA). METHODS: We evaluated 152 patients with intertrochanteric fractures concerning age, sex, comorbidity, Charlson Index, preoperative gait, OTA/AO classification, time from fracture to surgery, blood loss, amount of blood replacement, changes in gait, full weight-bearing at hospital discharge, complications, and mortality. The final indicators encompassed the adverse effects linked to implants, postoperative complications, clinical healing or bone healing duration, and functional score. RESULTS: The study included a total of 152 patients, out of which 78 (51%) received DHS treatment and 74 (49%) received TFNA treatment. The results of this study show that the TFNA group demonstrated superiority (p < 0.001). However, it should be noted that the TFNA group had a higher frequency of the most unstable fractures (AO 31 A3, p < 0.005). Full weight-bearing at discharge also decreased in patients with more unstable fractures (p = 0.005) and severe dementia (p = 0.027). Mortality was higher in the DHS group; however, a longer time from diagnosis to surgery was also observed in this group (p < 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: The TFNA group has shown a higher success rate in achieving full weight-bearing at hospital discharge when treating trochanteric hip fractures. This makes it the preferred choice for treating unstable fractures in this region of the hip. Additionally, it is important to note that a longer time to surgery is associated with increased mortality in patients with hip fractures.

Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular transmission disorder characterized by weakness of the cranial and skeletal muscles, however, neuropathies are extremely rare. In this case report we present a case of a 61-year-old man diagnosed Myasthenia gravis who came to our attention due to a 1 week of acute deep pain [NPRS 8/10] in the anterior and medial right knee which occurred during walking [NPRS 8/10] or stair climbing [NPRS 9/10]. A complete medical record and clinical examination based on physical exploration and ultrasound assessment confirmed a infrapatellar saphenous neuralgia. Therapeutic interventions included Percutaneous nerve electrical stimulation combined with pain neuroscience education, neural mobilization of the saphenous nerve and quadriceps resistance exercises. After 4 weeks, pain intensity [NRPS = 1/10], knee functionality [OKS = 41/48] and lower limb functionality [LLFI = 80%] were notably improved, nevertheless, fatigue [RPE = 2/10] was similar than baseline. At 2 months of follow-up, the effect on intensity of pain NRPS [0/10] and functionality OKS [40/48] and LLFI [82%] was maintained, however, no significant clinical changes were detected on perceived fatigue RPE Scale [2/10]. Despite the important methodological limitations of this study, our case report highlights the efficacy of percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation combined with physical agents modalities for pain and functionality of infrapatellar saphenous neuralgia in the context of Myasthenia gravis.

Currently, no international consensus on cardiac rehabilitation exists, leading to great variability in the intensity recommendations for training programs for cardiac patients, including those undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). While some countries prefer the high-intensity interval training (HIIT) method to improve cardiorespiratory fitness, other countries opt for moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). The aim of this systematic review was to compare the effects of HIIT and MICT on aerobic fitness and quality of life (QoL) in patients undergoing CABG with the intention of providing support for a consensus on exercise therapy. METHODS: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted using the online publication databases PubMed, the Cochrane Library and the Bibliothèque nationale du Luxembourg (BnL) covering the last ten years to July 2022. Relevant identified studies respecting the inclusion/exclusion criteria were selected, screened and extracted by four reviewers. Furthermore, the methodological quality of the clinical trials was assessed using the PEDro scale, which was reinforced using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for Randomized Trials (RoB2) for the evaluation of the risk of bias to provide more detail in the evaluation. The certainty of the evidence analysis was established using different levels of evidence in accordance with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework. RESULTS: A total of 379 patients from five RCTs diagnosed with coronary artery disease, including patients undergoing CABG, performed aerobic exercise over different time periods and were assessed based on peakVO2, VO2max and QoL. Overall, both training methods provided improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and quality of life, with greater changes in HIIT groups. CONCLUSION: Both trainings methods provide improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and QoL, with greater increases from HIIT. The moderate quality of evidence supports the use of HIIT and MICT to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and QoL.

The study aims to create a preoperative model from baseline demographic and health-related quality of life scores (HRQOL) to predict a good to excellent early clinical outcome using a machine learning (ML) approach. A single spine surgery center retrospective review of prospectively collected data from January 2016 to December 2020 from the institutional registry (SpineREG) was performed. The inclusion criteria were age ≥ 18 years, both sexes, lumbar arthrodesis procedure, a complete follow up assessment (Oswestry Disability Index-ODI, SF-36 and COMI back) and the capability to read and understand the Italian language. A delta of improvement of the ODI higher than 12.7/100 was considered a "good early outcome". A combined target model of ODI (Δ ≥ 12.7/100), SF-36 PCS (Δ ≥ 6/100) and COMI back (Δ ≥ 2.2/10) was considered an "excellent early outcome". The performance of the ML models was evaluated in terms of sensitivity, i.e., True Positive Rate (TPR), specificity, i.e., True Negative Rate (TNR), accuracy and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC ROC). A total of 1243 patients were included in this study. The model for predicting ODI at 6 months' follow up showed a good balance between sensitivity (74.3%) and specificity (79.4%), while providing a good accuracy (75.8%) with ROC AUC = 0.842. The combined target model showed a sensitivity of 74.2% and specificity of 71.8%, with an accuracy of 72.8%, and an ROC AUC = 0.808. The results of our study suggest that a machine learning approach showed high performance in predicting early good to excellent clinical results.

PURPOSE: To determine the impact of smartphone use on neck impairment and functional limitation in university students. METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted in a sample of students selected through convenience sampling between September 2016 and March 2017. The inclusion criteria were university students at the School of Medicine and Surgery, routine/daily use of mobile devices with advanced computing and connectivity capability built on an operating system, and aged 18-30 years. Participants completed questionnaires that measured general characteristics of smartphone use and demographic characteristics. Neck pain was assessed using a visual analogue pain score (VAS) and a pain drawing (PD); disability status was measured using the Neck Disability Index (NDI-I); and cervical postures while using the phone were captured using the Deluxe Cervical Range of Motion (CROM) device. RESULTS: A total of 238 volunteers were recruited (22.4 ± 2.2 years of age, 53.4% males), 35.9% of whom were overweight (>25 BMI). Regarding neck pain, 42.4% reported mild pain, 8.4% had moderate pain, and the remaining 49.2% had no pain. NDI-I and VAS were 3.8 ± 3.8 and 13.6 ± 18.4 mm, respectively. The pain categories did not influence the variables. No significant correlations were observed between the number of hours spent and posture (CROM) while using a smartphone and neck pain and NDI-I. CONCLUSION: While half of young medical students reported neck pain, the use of smartphones was not correlated with neck pain and disability. While we wait for future prospective studies, there is no reason to recommend a change in smartphone use habits among young adults in the meantime.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the impact of fast-track rehabilitation (FTR) and conventional rehabilitation (CR) on early recovery pattern after fast-track surgery for knee arthroplasty and conventional total knee arthroplasty (TKA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective, case-control study included a total of 43 adult patients (10 males, 33 females; mean age 69 years; range, 50 to 82 years) who were clinically stable and admitted for rehabilitation after fast-track surgery for knee arthroplasty or conventional TKA January 2016 and August 2016. The patients were divided into two groups as the FTR and CR treatment groups. The FTR program was designed as a patient-focused care, early mobilization, and standardized postoperative milestones. The CR program was designed by standard postoperative rehabilitation care. Primary outcomes were the length of stay (LOS) in the hospital and knee function. Secondary outcomes were pain and activities of daily living. RESULTS: At baseline, both groups were similar in terms of demographic data and primary outcomes. At discharge, intra-group analysis showed significant differences in both groups in all functional outcomes, except for pain, while the inter-group LOS was also significantly different (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our study results indicate that LOS can be reduced by FTR, yielding the same results in functional recovery and autonomy as CR.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effectiveness of non-invasive neuro-adaptive electrostimulation (NAE) therapy for treating chronic pain and disability in patients with fibromyalgia. METHOD/DESIGN: A prospective, randomized, sham-controlled study was conducted in 37 women with fibromyalgia. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either active NAE (n = 20) or stimulation with a sham device (n = 17). Participants in the experimental arm received eight 30-minute sessions over 4 weeks (2 sessions per week). The sham group received eight 30-minute sessions of sham stimulation. Therapeutic effects on pain relief, disability, and quality of life were evaluated using outcome measures at baseline, at 4 weeks, and after 3 months' follow-up. RESULTS: The findings indicated a significant reduction of pain in the active NAE group compared with the sham group immediately post-intervention, with a difference on the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) of 3 points (P = .001), and at 3 months' follow-up (P = .02). There were significant intragroup differences between the groups (P < .05) at post-intervention. After the intervention, both groups presented significant reductions on the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) with respect to baseline (P = .004), but not at the 3-month follow-up. In the conditioned pain modulation (CPM) in thumb variable we found significant differences between the groups at the 3-month follow-up (P = .02). No additional benefits for conditioned pain modulation and disability were observed between groups at the 3-month follow-up. Furthermore, anxiety/depression and catastrophizing improved in both groups, but no differences between groups were found. CONCLUSIONS: In this fibromyalgia cohort, NAE therapy significantly improved pain and quality of life at 4 weeks, but not at 3-month follow-up, compared with the sham stimulation group. Future investigations are needed in larger populations to confirm these findings.

The gut microbiota appears to be a significant contributor to musculoskeletal health and disease. Genetic background, age, gender, diet, lifestyle and socio-economic aspects are also important factors that contribute to musculoskeletal health, as well as to the normal balance of the intestinal microbiota. Through the production of a large and diverse pool of bioactive small molecules, the gut microbiota can in fact signal to extra-intestinal organs, establishing a systems-level connection with the host metabolic, endocrine, immune and nervous apparatus. The gut microbiota has therefore been extensively studied in recent years, for health promotion, disease prevention and disease treatment, as well as for exercise performance. Practically, physical activity is recommended as a useful tool to prevent disease and improve prognosis when an athlete gets sick or injured. Therefore, the findings of studies performed on athletes should not be automatically transferred to all subjects undertaking non-competitive exercise.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric flexible flatfoot is sometimes asymptomatic but it can rarely cause physical impairment, pain, and difficulty walking. We evaluated the radiographic effectiveness of intervention of subtalar arthroereisis with endorthesis for pediatric flexible flatfoot with final follow-up at skeletal maturity. METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study. 56 consecutive patients (112 feet) who underwent surgical treatment with subtalar arthroereisis for pediatric flexible flatfoot (mean age at final follow-up 15.5±1.2 years, 39.3% female) were enrolled. All the radiographic studies were performed in the hospital. Radiographs (standard weight-bearing radiographs of the foot with anteroposterior and lateral view) were used to measure lateral talocalcaneal angle (LTC), calcaneal pitch angle (CP), Meary's angle (MA), anteroposterior talonavicular angle (APTN), talonavicular uncoverage percent (TNU). Minimum follow-up was 18 months. Measures were assessed pre-operatively and at the final follow-up. Clinical and functional parameters were assessed at the final follow-up. RESULTS: Children who underwent surgical treatment with subtalar arthroereisis for pediatric flexible flatfoot exhibited a statistically significant improvement in all radiographic measurement parameters at the last follow-up at skeletal maturity (all, p<0.004). Mean follow-up was 40.1±23.6months. Clinical parameters were not correlated with the foot radiographic parameters at follow up period. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that endorthesis in pediatric flexible flatfoot was effective for improving radiographic parameters at skeletal maturity. The amount of the morphologic correction at the end of the skeletal growth should be expected mainly for lateral tarso-metatarsal alignment and talo-navicular congruency (MA, APTN, TNU). OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) on pain sensitivity and motor performance in patients with thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis (OA). DESIGN: Prospective, triple-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. SETTING: Private practice, Malaga, Spain. SUBJECTS: Forty-three patients (mean ± SD age = 71 ± 12 years) with a diagnosis of thumb CMC OA grade 1-2 were randomized to the control group (N = 21) or experimental group (N = 22). METHODS: The experimental group (ExpG) received high-intensity laser therapy (HILT), and the control group (ConG) received a placebo treatment. The outcome measures were pain intensity (visual analog scale) and key pinch strength measurements (dynamometer). All outcome measures were collected at baseline, immediately following the intervention, at four weeks, and at 12 weeks following the intervention. RESULTS: Analysis of variance revealed a group × time interaction (F = 40.8, P < 0.001) for pain intensity, with those patients receiving LT experiencing a greater reduction in pain compared with those receiving placebo therapy at the end of the intervention (P < 0.001), as well as at 12 weeks after the intervention. Although mean values in the ExpG were higher than in the ConG for key pinch at assessment, these differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: HILT effectively diminishes pain intensity when used as an isolated treatment for patients with thumb CMC OA, but the effect of treatment decreases after 12 weeks.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the test-retest reliability of the Phi angle in patients undergoing total ankle replacement (TAR) for end stage ankle osteoarthritis (OA) to assess the rotational alignment of the talar component. METHODS: Retrospective observational cross-sectional study of prospectively collected data. Post-operative anteroposterior radiographs of the foot of 170 patients who underwent TAR for the ankle OA were evaluated. Three physicians measured Phi on the 170 randomly sorted and anonymized radiographs on two occasions, one week apart (test and retest conditions), inter and intra-observer agreement were evaluated. RESULTS: Test-retest reliability of Phi angle measurement was excellent for patients with Hintegra TAR (ICC=0.995; p<0.001) and Zimmer TAR (ICC=0.995; p<0.001) on radiographs of subjects with ankle OA. There were no significant differences in the reliability of the Phi angle measurement between patients with Hintegra vs. Zimmer implants (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Measurement of Phi angle on weight-bearing dorsoplantar radiograph showed an excellent reliability among orthopaedic surgeons in determining the position of the talar component in the axial plane. This study aimed to describe the perceptions of decision-makers in major orthopedic centers regarding the value, implementation and use of spine surgery registries. A 33-item survey was sent to CEOs and heads of spine surgery of the International Society of Orthopedic Centers (ISOC). ISOC includes 21 hospitals worldwide with a special focus on high-quality musculoskeletal care. Twelve out of 20 member centers (60%) replied to the survey. Seven have working registries; 5 in Europe and 2 in North America. The estimations for the cost/year were distributed more evenly: $10,000 [2], $20,000 [1], $50,000 [1]. Society cannot afford unnecessary surgery nor renounce to cure patients with effective treatments. Spine surgery registries provide high levels of evidence. The cost of implementing a registry is limited in comparison to RCTs. Spine registries can pragmatically fill our knowledge gap by turning every operated patient into a study participant.

PURPOSE: We present the case of a patient with a giant cell tumor of the thoracic wall that invaded the thoracic spine. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A giant cell tumor that affects the spine and the thoracic wall is very rare but can grow to a large size. We report a case of giant cell tumor of the left chest wall extending to the thoracic spine in a 28-year-old man. Positron emission tomography (PET) showed a tumor of 11â€¯× 4â€¯× 13 cm in size and the histopathology specimen of the first surgical procedure diagnosed a giant cell tumor. The tumor was treated by oblique osteotomy guided with pedicle wires. RESULTS: A giant cell tumor was histologically confirmed following radical surgery. After 1 year of follow-up the patient was asymptomatic. There has been no recurrence of the tumor. CONCLUSION: The use of transpedicular Kirschner wires could be a good technical support for transpedicular oblique sagittal osteotomy.

PURPOSE: To review the incidence of perioperative and late complications of surgery for spinal deformity (ASD). METHODS: Review of the literature. We reviewed recent literature in English to investigate the incidence of complications in ASD surgery in the perioperative (≤ 3 months post-operative) and late (> 3 months post-operative) periods. Randomized-controlled trials, non-randomized trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, and case series published in 2005 or later were included. We divided articles according to surgical technique: open procedures (OP), minimally invasive surgery (MIS), and hybrid procedures (HP). Complications were recorded, grouped by surgical technique, and then classified according to a proposed Grading of Incidence of Complications (IOC). RESULTS: Ninety-six publications reporting on 12,168 patients were included; 68 were level IV of evidence studies, 24 were level III, and 4 level II. Perioperative IOC was 26.5% in OP, 36.4% in HP, and 24.2% in MIS. Late IOC was 11.1% in OP, 15.4% in HP, and 14.0% in MIS. IOC was significantly higher for hybrid procedures compared to both open and MIS procedures. CONCLUSIONS: Reported complications of surgery for ASD in the recent literature are frequent (24-36% perioperative plus 11-15% late). Open procedures were the most extensively reported in the literature. Complication rates are similar for OP and MIS. HP presented higher IOC likely due to the combination of OP and MIS respective complications. Small number of studies and heterogeneity in reporting could result in risk of bias in these results. Large-scale registry-based studies can fill this gap in the future. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Spine surgery is a multifaceted subspeciality requiring a breadth of knowledge and skill from different branches of medicine for the treatment of pathologies varying from degenerative to deformity, oncological, and trauma. PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to investigate the self-perceived competency of spine surgeons in relation to different types of spinal procedures. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: This is a survey study. METHODS: We conducted a survey on 176 surgeons (orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons). The instrument used for the assessment of the perceived ability was a survey consisting of 21 items (scenarios) developed and distributed through a professional online survey service to ensure confidentiality and anonymity. A newly proposed procedure-specific rating survey was used for the evaluation. Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test was used to assess validity. A p-value of <.05 was considered statistically significant. A Cronbach α value of >0.8 indicated reliability. RESULTS: Between the respondents (101), 47.5% were orthopedic surgeons and 52.5% were neurosurgeons. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was satisfactory (Cronbach α=0.93). For common spinal conditions, the orthopedic surgeons and the neurosurgeons perceived a similar competency. The neurosurgeons felt more competent in some cervical conditions (upper cervical procedures, myelopathy) and in neurologic tumors of the spine. The orthopedic surgeons felt more competent in deformities of the spine and in pelvic trauma. CONCLUSIONS: Self-perceived surgical competency for common spinal conditions is similar for orthopedic and neurosurgically trained spine surgeons. For less common conditions and clinical scenarios, the combination of both specialties seems to cover better the full spectrum of surgical care for spinal conditions. Multidisciplinary teams and comprehensive, multidisciplinary spinal surgical training should be considered to provide full coverage of spinal pathology.

PURPOSE: This investigation aimed to examine the extent to which case-based discussion with experts could influence the audience's opinions on the treatment of patients during a continuing medical education event for spine surgeons. METHODS: We conducted a prospective controlled crossover study of 90 surgeons. During a continuing medical education activity using case-based discussion, quiz questions were used which asked participants (attendants and faculty group) their opinions on the best choices about diagnosis and treatment in a number of cases. No answer was considered correct, but we evaluated the number of participants choosing each specific answer among a number of valid options. Quiz questions were collected with an automated response system at the entry and at the end of each case discussion. Change in participant's opinions was estimated from the change in the preferred answers between the entry and exit quizzes. Chi-square analysis was performed to determine significance. RESULTS: Sixty-two attendants out of eighty three (75%) and six faculties out of twelve (50%) responded to the survey. After the case discussion, 68.2% (p < 0.04, Chi-square test) of the attendants changed their opinion on the appropriate treatment. The faculty answers, however, showed no significant change in opinions regarding the identification of the appropriate treatment. CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of our results, case-based discussion driven by experts, as a form of teaching, has a measurable effect in terms of changes in the learners' opinions.

Objective The purpose of the study is to evaluate the clinical results and return to sports in patients undergoing reconstruction of the Achilles tendon after minimally invasive reconstruction with semitendinosus tendon graft transfer. Methods Eight patients underwent surgical reconstruction with a minimally invasive technique and tendon graft augmentation with ipsilateral semitendinosus tendon for chronic Achilles tendon rupture (more than 30 days after the injury and a gap of >6 cm). Patients were evaluated at a minimum follow-up of 24 months after the surgery through the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), the Achilles Tendon Total Rupture Scores (ATRS), the Endurance test, the calf circumference of the operated limb, and the contralateral and the eventual return to sports activity performed before the trauma. Results The mean age at surgery was 50.5 years. Five men and three women underwent the surgery. The average AOFAS was 92, mean Endurance test was 28.1, and the average ATRS was 87. All patients returned to their daily activities, and six out of eight patients have returned to sports activities prior to the accident (two football players, three runners, one tennis player) at a mean of 7.0 (range: 6.7-7.2) months after the surgery. No patient reported complications or reruptures. Conclusion Our study confirms encouraging results for the treatment of Achilles tendon rupture with a minimally invasive technique with semitendinosus graft augmentation. The technique can be considered safe and allows patients to return to their sports activity. Level of Evidence Level IV, therapeutic case series.

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to present a case series that illustrates possible benefits from combining minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO), plastic surgery and antibiotic therapy, in order to treat and eradicate infection in patients with tibial pilon or calcaneal fractures. METHODS: Eleven consecutive patients with dehiscence of the surgical wound in outcomes MIPO using a Locking Compression Plate (LCP) for tibial pilon, or calcaneus fractures. The patients had developed a documented infection of the surgical wound. All patients were treated and followed-up by the multidisciplinary team with the orthopedic surgeon, the plastic surgeon and the infectious disease physician. All patients were followed by the plastic surgeon to treat the wound dehiscence, as well as by the orthopedic surgeon until fracture consolidation. The duration of the antibiotic therapy was from 4 to 6 months. After 6 weeks, the intravenous treatment was replaced by oral administration. The follow-up intervals were 15 days, 40 days, and 3 months. RESULTS: The average time of wound closure was 109±60 days. The antibiotics used were chosen according to the antibiogram. The antibiotic therapy had a duration of 4-6 months, and after 6 weeks, the therapy switched to oral administration. At the 3-month follow-up, all patients had excellent outcomes and had returned to their normal activity of daily living. CONCLUSION: The patients in this study responded positively to a combination of MIPO, plastic surgery and antibiotic therapy, confirming that multidisplinary treatment in association with titanium devices are able to eradicate infection in short time.

[Purpose] The aim of the present study was to establish up-to-date data regarding the lung function of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. [Subjects and Methods] Forty-eight patients of both genders, with a diagnosis of CF, were recruited. As a result our sample presented, according to the GOLD criteria, 23 patients with mild lung obstruction (FEV1%pred: 89.86), 16 patients with moderate lung obstruction (FEV1%pred: 56.1) and 9 patients with severe obstruction (FEV1%pred: 32.1). [Results] All patients presented normal total lung capacity followed by an important residual volume increase. [Conclusion] Our results were important to illustrate the CF patient's lung functional status and to improve the health system strategy in treating such individuals.
