RESUMO

Background: Depression symptoms are a growing concern for adolescent girls with PCOS around the world. However, relatively small samples have given varying reports of its prevalence and risk factors in previous studies. Therefore, there is an urgent need for further research on the prevalence and associated factors of depression among adolescent girls with PCOS. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed from October 2021 to May 2022 using a questionnaire and examination of the medical records of a convenience sample of 335 adolescent girls with PCOS. The Chinese version of the Children's Depression Scale (CDI) was used to investigate depression symptoms. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to determine factors that were significantly associated with depression symptoms. Results: The prevalence of depression symptoms was 36.12% among adolescent girls with PCOS. A multivariate logistic regression model identified significant factors as perceived social support (95% CI: 0.921 ~ 0.965%, p = 0.000), sleep quality (95% CI: 1.134 ~ 1.324%, p = 0.000), belief illness (95% CI, 1.040 ~ 1.102%, p = 0.000), hirsutism (95% CI, 1.292 ~ 4.392%, p = 0.005), and LH/FSH ≥ 2 (95% CI, 1.939 ~ 6.369%, p = 0.000). Conclusion: Depression symptoms are an important problem among adolescent girls with PCOS in China. A comprehensive approach that encompasses social support, structured health education for the disease, and evaluation of the psychological status of PCOS girls with hirsutism (and) or LH/FSH ≥ 2 in time is important to minimize depression symptoms and improve psychological health among adolescent girls with PCOS.

Objective: In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of health education based on the transtheoretical model in reducing symptoms of kinesiophobia and enhancing rehabilitation outcomes among elderly patients post-total knee arthroplasty. Methods: Elderly patients post-knee replacement surgery were randomly divided into a control group, which received standard health education, and an experimental group, which received transtheoretical model-based health education. The intervention commenced on the day after surgery and continued for a duration of six months. Assessments of kinesiophobia scores, rehabilitation self-efficacy, and knee function were conducted before the intervention, and then at one, three, and six months postoperatively. Results: Between January 2022 and December 2022, 130 elderly patients who met the eligibility criteria were enrolled and subsequently randomly assigned into two groups of equal size. Comparable baseline characteristics were observed between the two groups The experimental group demonstrated lower kinesiophobia scores and higher scores in rehabilitation self-efficacy and knee function at one, three, and six months following surgery, compared to the control group. Conclusion: Health education based on a transtheoretical model reduces the symptoms of kinesiophobia and enhances rehabilitation self-efficacy and knee functions in elderly patients after knee replacement surgery.

Drug screening based on in-vitro primary tumor cell culture has demonstrated potential in personalized cancer diagnosis. However, the limited number of tumor cells, especially from patients with early stage cancer, has hindered the widespread application of this technique. Hence, we developed a digital microfluidic system for drug screening using primary tumor cells and established a working protocol for precision medicine. Smart control logic was developed to increase the throughput of the system and decrease its footprint to parallelly screen three drugs on a 4 × 4 cm2 chip in a device measuring 23 × 16 × 3.5 cm3. We validated this method in an MDA-MB-231 breast cancer xenograft mouse model and liver cancer specimens from patients, demonstrating tumor suppression in mice/patients treated with drugs that were screened to be effective on individual primary tumor cells. Mice treated with drugs screened on-chip as ineffective exhibited similar results to those in the control groups. The effective drug identified through on-chip screening demonstrated consistency with the absence of mutations in their related genes determined via exome sequencing of individual tumors, further validating this protocol. Therefore, this technique and system may promote advances in precision medicine for cancer treatment and, eventually, for any disease.

OBJECTIVE: Healthy behaviours are important for people with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, adopting and maintaining lifestyle changes involves a complex set of behavioural changes, which most patients fail to adhere to. The current research on health literacy, which includes individual and social skills needed in health self-management, in patients with PCOS is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to explore health literacy, health behaviours and the relationship between the two to expand research on PCOS management. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: A gynaecological outpatient clinic. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 286 patients with PCOS (≥18 years, diagnosed via Rotterdam criteria, able to self-report and give informed consent) were recruited from March to June 2022. OUTCOME MEASURES: Health literacy and health behaviours in patients with PCOS were assessed using the Health Literacy Management Scale and the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (Chinese version). Multiple logistic regression was used to analyse the factors influencing health literacy, and linear regression to assess the relationship between health literacy and health behaviours, with an F-significance test; p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Overall, most patients with PCOS had insufficient health literacy (55.9%). The influencing factors of health literacy in patients with PCOS were age (ß=0.154, p<0.05), Body Mass Index (ß=-0.140, p<0.05), income (ß=1.228, p<0.05), duration of illness (ß=0.110, p<0.05) and educational level (ß=1.552, p<0.05). Moreover, 40.6% of patients with poor health behaviours, and 31.8% with moderate health behaviours, needed to improve their health behaviours. Health literacy was positively correlated with health behaviours in patients with PCOS (r=0.473, p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The positive correlation between health literacy and health behaviour in patients with PCOS indicates that promoting health literacy in future treatment and management of PCOS may be beneficial.

OBJECTIVE: Using latent class to analyze whether there are subtypes of health behaviors in patients with PCOS can be addressed using targeted interventions. METHODS: October 2021 to June 2022, 471 PCOS patients were surveyed using the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile Questionnaire. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify subgroups of PCOS patients. Subsequent multinomial latent variable regressions identified factors that were associated with health behaviors. RESULTS: A three-class subtypes was the optimum grouping classification: (1)High healthy behavior risk; (2)high healthy responsibility and physical activity risk; (3)low healthy behavior risk. The multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that (1)Single (OR = 2.061,95% CI = 1.207-3.659), Education level is primary school or below (OR = 4.997,95%CI = 1.732-14.416), participants is student (OR = 0.362,95%=0.138-0.948), participants with pregnancy needs (OR = 1.869,95%=1.009-3.463) were significantly more likely to be in the high healthy behavior risk subtypes; (2)The older the age (OR = 0.953,95%=0.867-1.047) and the larger the WC (OR = 0.954,95%=0.916-0.993), participants is married (OR = 1.126,95%=0.725-1.961), participants is employed ( OR = 1.418,95%=0.667-3.012) were significantly more likely to be in the high health responsibility and physical activity risk subtypes. CONCLUSION: Patients with PCOS are a heterogeneous population with potential subtypes that may be suitable for customized multi-level care and targeted interventions.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy is a crucial factor that affects health outcomes. Understanding the current status of health literacy among patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the basis for helping patients better manage risk factors and improve their health outcomes. This study aimed to explore the status of and factors influencing health literacy in patients with PCOS, and to validate the pathway between health literacy, quality of life, and self-efficacy for these patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sample of 300 patients with PCOS in the gynecology outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital in Zunyi from March to September 2022. Data on health literacy, demographic features, quality of life, and self-efficacy were collected. Multiple stepwise linear regression was conducted to assess the risk factors associated with health literacy for the study participants. A structural equation model was used to construct and validate the pathways. RESULTS: Most participants exhibited low health literacy (3.61 ± 0.72), and only 25.70% had adequate health literacy. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the main factors associated with health literacy among participants included Body Mass Index (BMI) (B = -0.95, p < 0.01), education (B = 3.44, p < 0.01), duration of PCOS (B = 4.66, p < 0.01), quality of life (B = 0.25, p < 0.01), and self-efficacy (B = 0.76, p < 0.01). Multiple fit values indicated that the model fit the data effectively. The direct effect of health literacy on self-efficacy and quality of life was 0.06 and 0.32, respectively. The indirect effect of health literacy on quality of life was -0.053, and the total effect of health literacy on quality of life was 0.265. CONCLUSIONS: Health literacy was low among patients with PCOS. Healthcare providers should pay more attention to health literacy and to developing the corresponding intervention strategies urgently needed to improve the quality of life and health behavior of patients with PCOS.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle modification (diet, exercise, and behavioral interventions) is the first-line treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The benefits of face-to-face lifestyle modification intervention in a short time have been demonstrated. However, few studies have investigated the mobile technology effects on lifestyle modification in PCOS. Therefore, we examined the effect of transtheoretical model-based mobile health application intervention program for PCOS. METHODS: A randomised controlled, single-blind trial, was carried out from October 2018 to March 2019, which included 122 participants recruited from gynecology outpatient clinics of affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University in Guizhou. The study participants were randomised into intervention (n = 61) and control groups (n = 61). Participants in the intervention group undertook a TTM-based mobile health application program in addition to routine care, and participants in the control group received only routine care. RESULTS: Fifty-one participants in the intervention group and 49 in the control group completed the study. Compared to the control group, participants in the intervention group showed statistically significant decrease for BMI (P < 0.05), WC (P < 0.05), SAS (P < 0.05), and SDS (P < 0.05) scores at 6-month and 12-month, respectively. Behavior stage change of exercise and diet among paticipants with PCOS was significant at 6 months (c2 = 43.032, P < 0.05) and 12th months (c2 = 49.574, P < 0.05) between the intervention and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that the TTM-based mobile health application program can decrease BMI, WC, anxiety, and depression, and improve exercise and diet adherence in patients with PCOS in the long term. The TTM-based mobile health application program can be applied for lifestyle modification in women with PCOS. Poor adherence of life management in patients with PCOS and many then go on to adherence poor health outcomes as a result. There is an urgent need for new approach to enhance to life management compliance for patients with PCOS. TTM is a common behavior change model, which can effectively promote the behavior change of patients, but it has not been used in the life management of PCOS patients. Meanwhile, the traditional life management of PCOS is mainly face-to-face intervention, few studies have investigated the mobile technology effects on lifestyle modification in PCOS. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term effects of TTM-based mobile technology (for lifestyle modification) on the maintenance of health-related behavior changes among women with PCOS. This study confirmed that the TTM-based mobile health application program can decrease BMI, WC, anxiety, and depression, and improve exercise and diet adherence in patients with PCOS in the long term. Our study conducted TTM-based mobile health application program can provide a reference for other researchers or research organizations.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate health-promoting lifestyle status and associated risk factors in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: This study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Guizhou, China from December 2020 to June 2021. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 366 participants (18-45 years) diagnosed with PCOS were recruited from the outpatient departments. MEASURES: Sociodemographic characteristics were collected, and health-promoting behaviours were measured using the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile scale. Anxiety status was measured using the Zung's Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, depression status using the Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale and self-efficacy using the Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale. Multiple stepwise linear regression was conducted to assess the risk factors associated with the health-promoting behaviours of the study participants. RESULTS: The participants had a poor health-promoting behaviours (88.54±17.44). The highest score in all dimensions was spiritual growth (16.68±4.98), while physical activity (12.71±2.68) was the lowest. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the main factors influencing the development and maintenance of health-promoting behaviours among participants were education (B=10.788, p<0.001), depression (B=-0.377, p<0.001), anxiety (B=-0.333, p<0.001) and self-efficacy (B=0.938, p=0.002). The model showed 74.40% variance shared between the dependent and independent variables (R2=74.40, F=264.633, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Health-promoting behaviours are minimal among patients with PCOS, and improving negative emotions and enhancing behavioural awareness and self-efficacy are necessary to increase the adoption of health-promoting behaviours among patients with PCOS. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of a mobile health smartphone application to support self-management programmes on quality of life, self-management behaviour and exercise and smoking cessation behaviour in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). DESIGN: A randomised controlled, single-blind trial, was carried out from November 2017 to February 2019, which included 78 participants admitted with COPD to the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University in Guizhou. The study participants were randomised into intervention (n = 39) and control groups (n = 39). METHODS: Participants in the intervention group undertook a mobile medical application-based programme in addition to routine care, and participants in the control group received only routine care. The outcome measures were health-related quality of life evaluated by the COPD Assessment-Test, self-management behaviour using the COPD Self-Management Scale and physical activity and smoking behaviour were measured using a self-designed questionnaire. Data collection was conducted at baseline, third month, sixth month and 12th months. RESULTS: Thirty-five participants in the intervention group and 33 in the control group completed the study. Compared to the control group, participants in the intervention group showed statistically significant improvement in the COPD -Assessment -Test scores (P < 0.01) and in all domains of the COPD Self-Management Scale scores (P < 0.01) at 12th 12 months. Improvements in the COPD -Assessment -Test scores by 4.3 and 0.3 units, and in the total scores of the COPD Self-Management Scale total score by 23.01 and 2.28 units, respectively, were observed in the intervention and control groups, respectively over the 12-month study period. Meanwhile, the mobile health application programme also improved participants' exercise and smoking cessation behaviour. CONCLUSIONS: The mobile health smartphone application to support self-management programmes was effective in improving health-related quality of life and self-management behaviour in patients with COPD. Objective: Hospital-outreach pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) can improve health status and reduce health-care utilization by patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, its long-term effects and costs versus benefits are still not clear. This study was conducted to develop, deliver, and evaluate the effects and monetary savings of a hospital-outreach PR program for patients with COPD. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted. Patients with COPD (n=208) were randomly assigned to the hospital-outreach PR program (treatment) or treatment as usual (control). The treatment group received a 3-month intensive intervention, including supervised physical exercise, smoking cessation, self-management education, and psychosocial support, followed by long-term access to a nurse through telephone follow-up and home visits up to 24 months. The control group received routine care, including discharge education and a self-management education brochure. Main outcomes were collected at 3, 6, 12, and 24 -months postrandomization. Primary outcomes included health-care utilization (ie, readmission rates, times, and days, and emergency department visits) and medical costs. Secondary outcomes included lung function (ie, FEV1, FEV1% predicted, FVC), dyspnea (mMCR), exercise capacity (6MWD), impact on quality of life (CAT), and self-management (CSMS). Results: At the end of 24 months, 85 (81.7%) in the treatment group and 89 (85.6%) in the control group had completed the whole program. Compared with the control group, patients in the treatment group had lower readmission rates, times, and days at 6 and 12 months and during 12-24 months. Regarding costs during the 2 years, the program achieved CN¥3,655.94 medical  savings per patient per year, and every ¥1 spent on the program led to ¥3.29 insavings. Patients in the treatment group achieved improvements in FEV1, FEV1% predicted, exercise capacity, and self-management. It also achieved relief of dyspnea symptoms and improvement in COPD's impact on quality of life. Conclusion: The hospital-outreach PR program for patients with COPD achieved reductions in health-care utilization, monetary savings, and improvements in patient health outcomes. The effects of the program were sustained for at least 2 years. Trial Registration: This trial was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR-TRC-14005108).

The quantitative fate of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in soil is unknown. Furthermore, the effects of co-contamination by toxic copper on the behavior of PBDEs have not been investigated. Using a 14C-tracer, we studied mineralization, metabolism, and formation of non-extractable residues (NERs) of one PBDE congener, i.e., the 4-bromodiphenyl ether (BDE3) in oxic soil for 50 days, without and with amendment of Cu (400 mg kg-1 soil dw). BDE3 rapidly dissipated with a half-life of 5.5 days and large amounts of CO2 (38.8 ± 0.3% of initial applied amount at the end of incubation) and NERs (42.5 ± 0.4%) were rapidly produced. One hydroxylated metabolite (4'-HO-BDE3) was formed (8.1 ± 0.6%) at the beginning of the incubation, but then decreased to 2.2 ± 0.4%. Only BDE3 occurred in physico-chemically entrapped NERs, amounting to 9.2 ± 0.7%, while only 4'-HO-BDE3 in ester-linked NERs (10.9 ± 0.7%). The addition of Cu strongly reduced the kinetics constants of the transformations (including dissipation, mineralization, and NER-formation), the predicted maximal amounts of mineralization, as well as covalent binding of 4'-HO-BDE3 to soil. The results provide first quantitative insights into the fate of low-brominated congeners of PBDEs in soil and indicate that co-contamination by Cu may increase the environmental risks of biodegradable PBDEs in soil by increasing their persistence.

The fate and persistence of natural estrogens from livestock manure and the interactions of these compounds with veterinary antibiotics (VAs) have not been well studied. We therefore employed 14C-labeling to explore the mineralization, degradation, and residual distribution of 17ß-estradiol (E2) in swine manure in the absence and presence of six categories of VAs at concentrations of 10 and 100 mg/kg. After 16 days of incubation, 94% of the E2 dissipated, of which 28% was mineralized to 14CO2, 18% was transformed into organic-extractable E1 (9%) and other unknown metabolites (9%), and 48% into non-extractable residues (NER). VAs inhibited, enhanced or had no effect on E2 mineralization or its degradation to E1 and other metabolites. Principal component analysis showed that the overall effect of VAs was not necessarily related to their physicochemical properties or concentrations. However, high doses of macrolides inhibited E2 mineralization in manure and increased the retention of E2 and its metabolites in both free and NER forms. Our study demonstrates that considerable amounts of E2 and NER are retained in manure, despite nearly complete mineralization. Thus, VAs administered to livestock may increase the persistence of natural estrogens in manure and, accordingly, the environmental risks posed by these compounds.

The worldwide environmental occurrence of natural steroid estrogens has drawn increasing concerns. However, the fate of the estrogens, especially the α-isomer of estradiol, in the environmental matrices is still obscure. Using 14C-radioactively labelled forms of these estrogens can facilitate and is sometimes a prerequisite for studying their transformation and residual distribution in the environment, but the availability of labelled compounds (owing to commercially high prices or unavailable) hampers such studies. Here we developed simple and stable methods to synthesize 14C-labelled estradiol isomers and estrone using relatively low-priced [carboxyl-14C]-labelled sodium acetate as a precursor. The radiochemical syntheses started from an enol lactone, which was prepared from nandrolone by oxidation to open the A-ring followed by recyclization. Inversion of the 17ß-hydroxyl group into its 17α-form was achieved via the Walden inversion using the Mitsunobu reaction. [3-14C]-17ß-estradiol, [3-14C]-17α-estradiol, and [3-14C]-estrone were synthesized in five, six, and seven steps with an overall radiochemical yield of 17.4%, 16.2%, and 13.9%, respectively. The synthesized 14C-labelled compounds provide materials for studying the fate and behavior of estrogens in complex environmental matrixes and for further synthesis of their 14C-labelled sulfate and glucuronide conjugates.

This study was conducted to determine effect and mechanism of exogenous silicon (Si) on salt and drought tolerance of Glycyrrhiza uralensis seedling by focusing on the pathways of antioxidant defense and osmotic adjustment. Seedling growth, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant metabolism, osmolytes concentration and Si content of G. uralensis seedlings were analyzed under control, salt and drought stress [100 mM NaCl with 0, 10 and 20% of PEG-6000 (Polyethylene glycol-6000)] with or without 1 mM Si. Si addition markedly affected the G. uralensis growth in a combined dose of NaCl and PEG dependent manner. In brief, Si addition improved germination rate, germination index, seedling vitality index and biomass under control and NaCl; Si also increased radicle length under control, NaCl and NaCl-10% PEG, decreased radicle length, seedling vitality index and germination parameters under NaCl-20% PEG. The salt and drought stress-induced-oxidative stress was modulated by Si application. Generally, Si application increased catalase (CAT) activity under control and NaCl-10% PEG, ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity under all treatments and glutathione (GSH) content under salt combined drought stress as compared with non-Si treatments, which resisted to the increase of superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide caused by salt and drought stress and further decreased membrane permeability and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. Si application also increased proline concentration under NaCl and NaCl-20% PEG, but decreased it under NaCl-10% PEG, indicating proline play an important role in G. uralensis seedling response to osmotic stress. In conclusion, Si could ameliorate adverse effects of salt and drought stress on G. uralensis likely by reducing oxidative stress and osmotic stress, and the oxidative stress was regulated through enhancing of antioxidants (mainly CAT, APX and GSH) and osmotic stress was regulated by proline.

Bound-residue formation is a major dissipation process of most organic xenobiotics in soil. However, both the formation and nature of bound residues of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in soil are unclear. Using a 14C-tracer, we studied the fate of TBBPA in an oxic soil during 143 days of incubation. TBBPA dissipated with a half-life of 14.7 days; at the end of incubation, 19.6% mineralized and 66.5% formed bound residues. Eight extractable metabolites were detected, including TBBPA methyl ethers, single-ring bromophenols, and their methyl ethers. Bound residues (mostly bound to humin) rapidly formed during the first 35 days. The amount of those humin-bound residues then quickly decreased, whereas total bound residues decreased slowly. By contrast, residues bound to humic acids and fulvic acids increased continuously until a plateau was reached. Ester- and ether-linked residues accounted for 9.6-27.0% of total bound residues during the incubation, with ester linkages being predominant. Residues bound via ester linkages consisted of TBBPA, TBBPA monomethyl ether, and an unknown polar compound. Our results indicated that bound-residue formation is the major pathway of TBBPA dissipation in oxic soil and provide first insights into the chemical structure of the reversibly ester-linked bound residues of TBBPA and its metabolites.

Steroid oestrogens are typical endocrine-disrupting compounds in the environment and are excreted from the human and animals mainly as conjugates, including sulfate and glucuronide salts. The oestrogen conjugates are largely biologically inactive, but they can be de-conjugated and release free oestrogens, which usually exhibit strong oestrogenicity. Therefore, it is important to study the fate of oestrogen conjugates in the environment. However, because of the complexity of environmental matrixes, time-consuming pre-treatments of samples are usually required to reduce the interference of the matrixes. (14)C radioisotope can trace target substances and their degradation products at low concentrations in complex environmental samples and is therefore essential in such studies. We synthesized three oestrogen sulfates with (14)C-labelling at the ring, i.e. [3-(14)C]-estrone-3-sulfate ammonium salt, [3-(14)C]-17ß-estradiol-17-sulfate ammonium salt, and [3-(14)C]-17ß-estradiol-3,17-disulfate diammonium salt with radiochemical purities of >98% by sulfation of [3-(14)C]-labelled estrone and 17ß-estradiol in dry pyridine with SO3 -triethylamine at room temperature or 90-95 °C, followed by hydrolysis with KOH-methanol solution and purification by preparative thin-layer chromatography on silica gel using an ammonia-containing eluent. The products were characterized by mass spectrometry and (13)C and (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, using their corresponding non-labelled compounds. The (14)C-labelled oestrogen conjugates provide possibilities for studying their fate in soil and sediment environments as well as in the animal manure.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an analytical method for simultaneous determination of 6 pesticides, namely bentazone, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid,carbofuran, carbaryl, atrazine and pentachlorophenol, in drinking water by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and thereby to provide a reference to revise the Health Standards for Drinking Water (GB/T 5750-2006). Meanwhile, to evaluate the content of the above 6 pesticides in the drinking water samples supplied by 12 centralized water plants in Jiangsu province. METHODS: The 10 ml water sample was acidized by hydrochloric acid to pH ≤ 2, and then concentrated by solid phase extraction cartridge and eluted with acetone. The solvent was changed into methanol after drying by nitrogen blow. The target compounds were separated by C18 column using methanol/water as mobile phase, and detected by mass spectrometry with multi-reaction-monitoring(MRM) mode. The repeatability and sensitivity of the assay were evaluated. The drinking water samples from the 12 water plants were then detected. RESULTS: In this experimental method, the minimum detectable concentration were around 0.02-0.41 µg/L, with the recovery rate at 75%-115%, and the RSD between 2% and 10%. Under the experimental condition, there were no pesticides detected in the drinking water samples from the 12 centralized water plants. CONCLUSION: The method is efficient and environment-friendly, with little discharge of effluent, which could meet the requirement of the drinking water monitor.

Nickel oxide catalyst was obtained by precipitation-oxidation method with the assistance of microwave irradiation. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface area and porosity analyzer. On the basis of the results, the as-prepared product was nano-NiO(2) with OH group and active oxygen. The catalytic activity of the as-prepared product might be attributed to its microwave absorbing property and the role of active oxygen, OH group under microwave irradiation. The microwave induced catalytic degradation process (MICD) with as-prepared product was further applied to degrade triphenylmethane dye crystal violet (CV). 97% of a 100 mg L(-1) sample of CV was rapidly degraded in 5 min with the corresponding 81% TOC removal. The main intermediates were separated and identified by LC-ESI-MS and GC-MS techniques. The LC-ESI-MS analytical results demonstrated that a series of N-de-methylation products were obtained in a stepwise manner, namely mono-, di-, tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexa-de-methylated CV species. Nine organic acids with benzene ring and four low molecular acids were yielded with the assistance of GC-MS. The proposed degradation pathways were discussed in this study. The degradation processes might include N-de-methylation, destruction of conjugated structure and opening-benzene ring. MICD, as a potential technique with wide application perspective, can be used to purify triphenylmethane dye wastewater with nanosized nickel dioxide.

Degradation of diuron in aqueous solution by gas-liquid hybrid discharge was investigated for the first time. The effect of output power intensity, pH value, Fe(2+) concentration, Cu(2+) concentration, initial conductivity and air flow rate on the degradation efficiency of diuron was examined. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of diuron increased with increasing output power intensity and increased with decreasing pH values. In the presence of Fe(2+), the degradation efficiency of diuron increased with increasing Fe(2+) concentration. The degradation efficiency of diuron was decreased during the first 4 min and increased during the last 10 min with adding of Cu(2+). Decreasing the initial conductivity and increasing the air flow rate were favorable for the degradation of diuron. Degradation of diuron by gas-liquid hybrid discharge fitted first-order kinetics. The pH value of the solution decreased during the reaction process. Total organic carbon removal rate increased in the presence of Fe(2+) or Cu(2+). The generated Cl(-1), NH(4)(+), NO(3)(-), oxalic acid, acetic acid and formic acid during the degradation process were also detected. Based on the detected Cl(-1) and other intermediates, a possible degradation pathway of diuron was proposed.

Diuron degradation efficiencies and the proposed mechanism by gamma-ray irradiation were investigated. Several factors that might affect the degradation values were further examined. The UV absorbances at 200-400 nm and diuron concentration decreased with the increase of radiation dose. When diuron initial concentration was 18.5 mg L(-1) and 1.0 kGy was selected as the radiation dose, diuron removal value and loss of total organic carbon were 100 and 34.1%, respectively. However, the concentration of Cl- ion increased with the increase of radiation dose. The process could be depicted by first order reaction kinetics and the reaction was mainly caused by the reaction of diuron with .OH and eaq-. The degradation efficiency decreased with the increase of initial concentration at the same radiation dose. H2O2, HCO3-, NO3-, NO2-, CH3OH and humic acid as additives reduced the degradation efficiency. Furthermore, the increase of NO3-, NO2-, CH3OH and humic acid would result in the decrease of the degradation values. The pH value could affect the removal efficiency and the degradation process was enhanced in acid condition. The pH value became lower with increasing radiation dose after gamma-ray irradiation.
