BACKGROUND: Pesticides are used in agricultural production for prevent and control crop diseases and pests, but it is easy to cause excessive pesticides residues in agricultural products, polluting the environment and endangering human health. Due to their unmatched and sustainable capabilities, nanoextraction procedures are becoming every day more important in Analytical Chemistry. In particular, nanoconfined liquid phase extraction has shown extraction capabilities toward polar, medium polar, and/or nonpolar substances, which can be easily modulated depending on the nanoconfined solvent used. Furthermore, this "green" technique showed excellent characteristics in terms of recoveries, extraction time (≤1 min), reliability, and versatility. (97) RESULTS: In this work, the advantages of this technique have been coupled with those of filtration membrane extraction, making use of carbon nanofibers (CnFs) growth on carbon microspheres (CµS). This substrate has been deposited on a filter, which combined with gas chromatographic mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis successfully employed for the nanoextraction of 30 pesticides (18 organochlorine and 12 pyrethroids) in tea samples. Under the optimized extraction conditions, the linear range with standard solutions was from 1 to 1000 ng mL-1 (R2 ≥ 0.99), the limit of detections in tea samples were in the range 0.56-17.98 µg kg-1. The accuracy of the developed method was evaluated by measuring the extraction recovery of the spiked tea samples, and recoveries between 74.41 % and 115.46 %. (119) SIGNIFICANCE: Considering the versatility of nanoconfined liquid phase extraction and the functionality of the filtration membrane extraction procedure, this new extraction method can be considered a powerful candidate for automatized high-throughput analyses of real samples. Vanadium-based compounds are fantastic cathodes for aqueous zinc metal batteries due to the high specific capacity and excellent rate capability. Nevertheless, the practical application has been hampered by the dissolution of vanadium in traditional aqueous electrolytes owing to the strong polarity of water molecules. Herein, we propose a hybrid electrolyte made of Zn(ClO4)2 salt in tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (G4) and H2O solvents to upgrade the cycle life of Zn//K0.486V2O5 battery. The G4 jointly solvates with Zn2+ ions and replaces a portion of the H2O molecules in the Zn2+ solvation sheath. It forms a strong bond with H2O, reducing its activity, and significantly inhibiting vanadium dissolution and water-induced parasitic reaction. Consequently, the optimized electrolyte with H2O and G4 volume ratio of 5 : 5 enhances the cycling stability of Zn//K0.486V2O5 battery, enabling it to reach up to 600 cycles. In addition, the battery demonstrates a satisfactory reversible capacity of 475.7 mAh g-1 and excellent rate performance attributed to the moderate ionic conductivity (28.8 mS cm-1) of the hybrid electrolyte. Last but not least, in the optimized electrolyte, the symmetric Zn//Zn cells deliver a long cycling performance of 400 h, while the asymmetric Zn//Cu cells shows a high average coulombic efficiency of 97.4 %.

African swine fever, one of the major viral diseases of swine, poses an imminent threat to the global pig industry. The high-efficient replication of the causative agent African swine fever virus (ASFV) in various organs in pigs greatly contributes to the disease. However, how ASFV manipulates the cell population to drive high-efficient replication of the virus in vivo remains unclear. Here, we found that the spleen reveals the most severe pathological manifestation with the highest viral loads among various organs in pigs during ASFV infection. By using single-cell-RNA-sequencing technology and multiple methods, we determined that macrophages and monocytes are the major cell types infected by ASFV in the spleen, showing high viral-load heterogeneity. A rare subpopulation of immature monocytes represents the major population infected at late infection stage. ASFV causes massive death of macrophages, but shifts its infection into these monocytes which significantly arise after the infection. The apoptosis, interferon response, and antigen-presentation capacity are inhibited in these monocytes which benefits prolonged infection of ASFV in vivo. Until now, the role of immature monocytes as an important target by ASFV has been overlooked due to that they do not express classical monocyte marker CD14. The present study indicates that the shift of viral infection from macrophages to the immature monocytes is critical for maintaining prolonged ASFV infection in vivo. This study sheds light on ASFV tropism, replication, and infection dynamics, and elicited immune response, which may instruct future research on antiviral strategies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To our knowledge, no previously reported clinical data of a coronary artery fistula forming a pseudoaneurysm and presenting as a anterior chest wall lump. We reported a rare case of Coronary pseudoaneurysm with a superficial mass and accompanying Brucella infection. The patient was successfully treated with surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patient case data was extracted from hospital records. RESULTS: A 64-year-old male presented with a history of paroxysmal left-sided chest pain and painful anterior chest wall lump. Coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography revealed the RCA pseudoaneurysm that showed a peripherally calcified soft-tissue mass in the anterior mediastinum and communicated with the chest wall lump through intercostal spaces. The patient underwent the resection of chest lump and RCA pseudoaneurysm under cardiopulmonary bypass, along with a combined antimicrobial therapy. The patient was discharged successfully after the surgery. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: We report this rare case and highlight the possible origin of the anterior mediastinal mass and anterior chest wall lump as a pseudoaneurysm formed by a coronary artery fistula.

In this work, we have developed a composite chitosan film incorporating the Litsea cubeba essential oil (LCEO) and starch with good physical properties, and investigated the effect of coating strawberries with this composite film. The best formula of the LCEO/chitosan/corn starch/glycerol (LCEO/CH/CS/gly) composite films is 0.25% LCEO, 2.75% CH, 0.40% corn starch, and 0.75% glycerol. Coating strawberries with CH/CS/gly film or LCEO/CH/CS/gly films resulted in significantly lower respiration intensity and a slower decay rate, much slower decreases in the firmness, and reductions in the sugar and ascorbic acid content of the fruit during storage (p < 0.05). The coatings also led to a much slower accumulation of malondialdehyde and anthocyanins (p < 0.05). The LCEO/CH/CS/gly film was generally more effective than the CH/CS/gly film; however, the effect was more obvious in the later stages of storage. Thus, coating strawberries with CH/CS/gly film or LCEO/CH/CS/gly film can be a viable method for extending the shelf-life of the fruit.

BACKGROUND: Vitamins are micronutrients that are required for normal growth and development of living organisms. However, due to their various chemical properties (e.g., acid-base behavior, the presence of numerous forms) and fluctuating concentration levels within complex matrices, simultaneous analysis of multi-class vitamins, including their active forms, is a challenging task. The growing nutrient shortage in foods is concerning for food consumers, manufacturers, and quality control organizations. Hence, a simple, fast, and greener approach that can simultaneously analyze multi-class vitamins is required to aid food testing and clinical laboratories in evaluating vitamin content more rapidly and accurately. RESULTS: A green and rapid analytical method based on online two-dimensional microscale carbon fiber/activated carbon fiber fractionation-mass spectrometry (2DµCFs-MS) was developed and validated for simultaneous determination of vitamins (water- and fat-soluble vitamins and some analogs) in food supplements and fortified energy drinks. Vitamins have been successfully separated into three different fractions using the minimum toxic solvent (only 0.7 mL of organic solvent) in a single run within 6 min. The limit of detection (LOD) ranges from 0.1 to 10.4 ng/mL, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) ranges from 0.39 to 34.5 ng/mL. The method also showed adequate repeatability and intermediate precision, with RSD<10 % and R2 > 0.99 for most vitamins. The analytical method was evaluated in terms of greenness, with an analytical greenness (AGREE) score of 0.68. SIGNIFICANCE: The 2DµCFs-MS system was developed to separate and detect multi-class vitamins simultaneously, which can be used as a beneficial tool to investigate vitamin content for food labeling and determining the vitamins in biological fluids and other complex samples. The developed method can tackle the challenge of simultaneous and fast routine analysis of multi-class vitamins.

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is a commonly used technique for the treatment of spinal diseases, but it is rarely employed for cervical lesions. This study presents a case series and a literature review to evaluate the efficacy of cervical PVP. METHODS: From August 2013 to January 2023, 14 patients underwent cervical PVP in the author's institution. The mean postoperative follow-up time was 20.3 ± 12.1 months (ranging from 5 to 41 months). The pain status and quality of life were assessed preoperatively, postoperatively, and during follow-up using the Visual Analog Scale and Neck Disability Index. Additionally, complications that occurred during the study period were documented. RESULTS: The series of cases included 9 cases of hemangiomas and 5 cases of spinal metastases. The common symptom was axial pain in the neck. All patients were successfully treated with PVP. Visual analog scale scores decreased from 6.6 ± 0.8 preoperatively to 1.9 ± 0.8 at 24 hours postoperatively and to 2.4 ± 1.2 at the last follow-up (P < 0.01). Neck Disability Index decreased from 22.3% ± 8.9% preoperatively to 7.6% ± 8.1% at 24 hours postoperatively and to 6.0% ± 7.2% at 12-month follow-up (P < 0.01). After the operation, a case of dysphagia occurred, but no major complications were observed during the follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: Cervical PVP via the anterolateral approach is a safe option for the treatment of cervical symptomatic hemangiomas and spinal metastases with limited invasiveness. It is effective in relieving pain and improving quality of life.

Chemotherapy remains the mainstay of treatment for the lymphoma patient population, despite its relatively poor therapeutic results, high toxicity, and low specificity. With the advancement of biotechnology, the significance of drug-loading biomimetic materials in the medical field has become increasingly evident, attracting extensive attention from the scientific community and the pharmaceutical industry. Given that they can cater to the particular requirements of lymphoma patients, drug-loading biomimetic materials have recently become a potent and promising delivery approach for various applications. This review mainly reviews the recent advancements in the treatment of tumors with biological drug carrier-loaded drugs, outlines the mechanisms of lymphoma development and the diverse treatment modalities currently available, and discusses the merits and limitations of biological drug carriers. What is more, the practical application of biocarriers in tumors is explored by providing examples, and the possibility of loading such organisms with antilymphoma drugs for the treatment of lymphoma is conceived.

Novel structural designs for metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are expected to improve ion-transport behavior in composite solid electrolytes. Herein, upper-dimensional MIL-53(Al) nanofibers (MNFs, MIL-53 belongs to the MIL (Material Institute Lavoisier) group) with flower-like nanoflake structures have been designed and constructed via modified hydrothermal coordination. The optimized MNFs with high surface area and porosity can form abundant interfaces with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrix. The plasticization of MNFs to the PEO matrix will facilitate segmental movement of PEO chains to facilitate Li+ conduction. The unsaturated open metal centers of MNFs can effectively capture bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anions (TFSI-) to deliver more free lithium ions for transfer. Moreover, the upper-dimensional nanofiber structure endows lithium ions with a long-range and consecutive transport pathway. The obtained composite solid electrolyte (MNFs@PEO) presents a high ionic conductivity of 4.1 × 10-4 S cm-1 and a great Li+ transference number of 0.4 at 60 °C. The electrolyte also exhibits a stable Li plating/stripping behavior over 1000 h at 0.1 mA cm-1 with inhibited Li dendrite growth. Furthermore, the Li/LiFePO4 and Li/LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 batteries with MNFs@PEO as electrolytes both display great cycling stabilities with high-capacity retention, indicating their potential applications in lithium metal batteries. The study will put forward new inspirations for designing advanced MOF-based composite solid electrolytes.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease. The mechanism by which medium- and long-chain triglyceride (MCT/LCT) propofol plays a role in promoting NAFLD remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of MCT/LCT propofol on NAFLD progression and its mechanism of action. In Huh-7 and HepG3 cells induced by free fatty acids (FFA), propofol downregulated the expression levels of TG and lipid metabolism-related proteins by promoting the activation of the PI3K/AKT pathway and suppressing FFA-induced lipid metabolic disorders. In a high-fat diet (HFD) -induced NAFLD mouse model, we demonstrated that propofol significantly inhibited liver steatosis, inflammatory cell infiltration, and fibrosis. In conclusion, our results suggest that MCT/LCT propofol reduces liver lipid accumulation by activating the PI3K/AKT pathway and further suppressing the NAFLD process.

SUMMARY: Colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) is a prevalent disease worldwide, known for its high mortality and morbidity rates. Despite this, the extent of investigation concerning the correlation between COAD's CLCA1 expression and immune cell infiltration remains insufficient. This study seeks to examine the expression and prognosis of CLCA1 in COAD, along with its relationship to the tumor immune microenvironment. These findings will offer valuable insights for clinical practitioners and contribute to the existing knowledge in the field. In order to evaluate the prognostic significance of CLCA1 in individuals diagnosed with colorectal cancers, we conducted a comprehensive analysis using univariate and multivariate Cox regression models along with receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis. This study was performed on the patient data of COAD obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Nomograms were developed to anticipate CLCA1 prognostic influence. Furthermore, the CLCA1 association with tumor immune infiltration, immune checkpoints, immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) response, interaction network, and functional analysis of CLCA1-related genes was analyzed. We found that Colon adenocarcinoma tissues significantly had decreased CLCA1 expression compared to healthy tissues. Furthermore, the study revealed that the group with high expression of CLCA1 demonstrated a significantly higher overall survival rate (OS) as compared to the group with low expression. Multivariate and Univariate Cox regression analysis revealed the potential of CLCA1 as a standalone risk factor for COAD. These results were confirmed using nomograms and ROC curves. In addition, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis and functional gene enrichment showed that CLCA1 may be associated with functional activities such as pancreatic secretion, estrogen signaling and cAMP signaling, as well as with specific immune cell infiltration. Therefor, as a new independent predictor and potential biomarker of COAD, CLCA1 plays a crucial role in the advancement of colon cancer.


El adenocarcinoma de colon (COAD) es una enfermedad prevalente a nivel mundial, conocida por sus altas tasas de mortalidad y morbilidad. Sin embargo, el alcance de la investigación sobre la correlación entre la expresión de CLCA1 de COAD y la infiltración de células inmunes sigue siendo insuficiente. Este estudio busca examinar la expresión y el pronóstico de CLCA1 en COAD, junto con su relación con el microambiente inmunológico del tumor. Estos hallazgos ofrecerán conocimientos valiosos para los profesionales clínicos y contribuirán al conocimiento existente en el campo. Para evaluar la importancia de pronóstico de CLCA1 en personas diagnosticadas con cáncer colorrectal, realizamos un análisis exhaustivo utilizando modelos de regresión de Cox univariados y multivariados junto con un análisis de la curva característica operativa del receptor (ROC). Este estudio se realizó con los datos de pacientes de COAD obtenidos de la base de datos The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Se desarrollaron nomogramas para anticipar la influencia pronóstica de CLCA1. Además, se analizó la asociación de CLCA1 con la infiltración inmunitaria tumoral, los puntos de control inmunitarios, la respuesta de bloqueo de los puntos de control inmunitarios (ICB), la red de interacción y el análisis funcional de genes relacionados con CLCA1. Descubrimos que los tejidos de adenocarcinoma de colon tenían una expresión significativamente menor de CLCA1 en comparación con los tejidos sanos. Además, el estudio reveló que el grupo con alta expresión de CLCA1 demostró una tasa de supervivencia general (SG) significativamente mayor en comparación con el grupo con baja expresión. El análisis de regresión de Cox multivariado y univariado reveló el potencial de CLCA1 como factor de riesgo independiente de COAD. Estos resultados se confirmaron mediante nomogramas y curvas ROC. Además, el análisis de la red de interacción proteína- proteína (PPI) y el enriquecimiento de genes funcionales mostraron que CLCA1 puede estar asociado con actividades funcionales como la secreción pancreática, la señalización de estrógenos y la señalización de AMPc, así como con la infiltración de células inmunes específicas. Por lo tanto, como nuevo predictor independiente y biomarcador potencial de COAD, CLCA1 desempeña un papel crucial en el avance del cáncer de colon.

Strain effect in the structurally defective materials can contribute to the catalysis optimization. However, it is challenging to achieve the performance improvement by strain modulation with the help of geometrical structure because strain is spatially dependent. Here, a new class of compressively strained platinum-iridium-metal zigzag-like nanowires (PtIrM ZNWs, M = nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and gallium (Ga)) is reported as the efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) catalysts. Particularly, the optimized PtIrNi ZNWs with 3% compressive strain (cs-PtIrNi ZNWs) can achieve the highest HER/HOR performances among all the catalysts investigate. Their HOR mass and specific activities are 3.2/14.4 and 2.6/32.7 times larger than those of PtIrNi NWs and commercial Pt/C, respectively. Simultaneously, they can exhibit the superior stability and high CO resistance for HOR. Further, experimental and theoretical studies collectively reveal that the compressive strain in cs-PtIrNi ZNWs effectively weakens the adsorption of hydroxyl intermediate and modulates the electronic structure, resulting in the weakened hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and moderate hydroxide binding energy (OHBE), beneficial for the improvement of HOR performance. This work highlights the importance of strain tuning in enhancing Pt-based nanomaterials for hydrogen catalysis and beyond.

Fluoride ions are highly relevant in environmental and biological sciences, and there is a very limited number of established fluoride chemical sensors. Previous fluoride-selective optodes were demonstrated with metal-porphyrin as the ionophore and required a chromoionophore for optical signal transduction. We demonstrate here novel optical fluoride sensing with nano-optodes containing an aluminum-phthalocyanine complex (AlClPc) as the single active sensing component, simplifying the conventional ion-selective optodes approach. The fluoride nano-optodes were interrogated in the absorbance and fluorescence modes in the near-infrared region, with absorption around 725 nm and emission peaks at 720 and 800 nm, respectively. The nano-optodes exhibited a lower detection limit around 0.1 µM and good selectivity over a range of common anions including ClO4-, Cl-, Br-, I-, SO42-, NO3-, and AcO-. Furthermore, the nano-optodes were physically entrapped in agarose hydrogels to allow distance-based point-of-care testing (POCT) applications. The 3D networks of the agarose hydrogel were able to filter off large particulates in the samples without stopping fluoride ions to reach the nano-optodes. The fluoride concentrations in real samples including river water, mineral water, and groundwater were successfully determined with the distance-based sensing hydrogel, and the results agreed well with those from commercial fluoride electrodes. Therefore, the results in this work lay the groundwork for the optical detection of fluoride in environmental samples without very sophisticated sample manipulation.

(1) Background: Preservatives may pose a potential threat to human health. To ensure food safety, this study has devised a method that concurrently detects a dozen preservatives (acetic acid, propionic acid, dehydroacetic acid, benzoic acid, sorbic acid, dimethyl fumarate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, ethyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, isopropyl parahydroxybenzoate, butyl parahydroxybenzoate, and isobutyl parahydroxybenzoate) in pastry, utilizing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. (2) Methods: The pastry samples were acidified with hydrochloric acid, extracted with acetonitrile via vortexing, purified by hexane and saturated with sodium chloride solution to remove lipids and impurities, and then concentrated via nitrogen blowing. The method was then quantitatively analyzed using GC-MS with the internal standard method after methanol re-dissolution. (3) Results: The results showed that the content of the 12 preservatives had good linearity within the range of 1.0-50 µg/mL, with correlation coefficients all greater than 0.99. The method detection limit was 0.04-2.00 mg/kg and the quantification limit was 0.12-6.67 mg/kg. The average recovery rates of the samples at three different spiked concentrations of low, medium, and high were 70.18-109.22%, and the relative standard deviations were 1.82-9.79% (n = 6). (4) Conclusions: This method requires a small amount of sample, has high sensitivity, and is simple and fast to operate, making it suitable for the simultaneous determination of 12 preservatives in pastry. This approach contributes to the effective surveillance and regulation of preservative usage in pastries, thereby safeguarding public well-being.

Repairing high-load connective tissues, such as ligaments, by surgically implanting artificial grafts after injury is challenging because they lack biointegration with host bones for stable interfaces. Herein, a high-performance helical composite fiber (HCF) ligament by wrapping aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets around polyester fibers is proposed. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery shows that HCF grafts could induce effective bone regeneration, thus allowing the narrowing of bone tunnel defects. Such repair of the bone tunnel is in strong contrast to the tunnel enlargement of more than 50% for commercial artificial ligaments made from bare polyester fibers. Rats reconstructed with this HCF ligament show normal jumping, walking, and running without limping. This work allows bone regeneration in vivo through a one-step surgery without seeding cells or transforming growth factors, thereby opening an avenue for high-performance artificial tissues.

Macrophages play an important role in the development of life-threatening sepsis, which is characterized by multiorgan dysfunction, through their ability to produce inflammatory cytokines. Carvacrol is a phenolic compound that has been confirmed to possess strong anti­inflammatory activity. In this study, we mainly investigated the effect of carvacrol on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced macrophage proinflammatory responses and endotoxic shock. The results showed that carvacrol significantly reduced mouse body weight loss and ameliorated pathological damage to the liver, lung, and heart under LPS-induced sepsis. Carvacrol attenuated inflammatory responses by inhibiting the LPS-induced production of inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, carvacrol inhibited IL-6 production mainly through the ERK1/2 signalling pathway in macrophages. Furthermore, carvacrol improved the survival of septic mice. This study sheds light on the role of carvacrol in the pathogenesis of LPS-induced sepsis, and thus, its potential in treating sepsis patients may be considered.

BACKGROUND: The kidney is particularly vulnerable to toxins due to its abundant blood supply, active tubular reabsorption, and medullary interstitial concentration. Currently, calcium phosphate-induced and calcium oxalate-induced nephropathies are the most common crystalline nephropathies. Hyperoxaluria may lead to kidney stones and progressive kidney disease due to calcium oxalate deposition leading to oxalate nephropathy. Hyperoxaluria can be primary or secondary. Primary hyperoxaluria is an autosomal recessive disease that usually develops in childhood, whereas secondary hyperoxaluria is observed following excessive oxalate intake or reduced excretion, with no difference in age of onset. Oxalate nephropathy may be overlooked, and the diagnosis is often delayed or missed owning to the physician's inadequate awareness of its etiology and pathogenesis. Herein, we discuss the pathogenesis of hyperoxaluria with two case reports, and our report may be helpful to make appropriate treatment plans in clinical settings in the future. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of acute kidney injury, which were considered to be due to oxalate nephropathy in the setting of purslane (portulaca oleracea) ingestion. The two patients were elderly and presented with oliguria, nausea, vomiting, and clinical manifestations of acute kidney injury requiring renal replacement therapy. One patient underwent an ultrasound-guided renal biopsy, which showed acute tubulointerstitial injury and partial tubular oxalate deposition. Both patients underwent hemodialysis and were discharged following improvement in creatinine levels. CONCLUSIONS: Our report illustrates two cases of acute oxalate nephropathy in the setting of high dietary consumption of purslane. If a renal biopsy shows calcium oxalate crystals and acute tubular injury, oxalate nephropathy should be considered and the secondary causes of hyperoxaluria should be eliminated.

Cadmium (Cd) is highly toxic and widely distributed in aquatic systems due to its high solubility and mobility in water, which can severely inhibit the survival of aquatic macrophytes. The phytotoxicity of Cd depends on environmental factors; however, it remains unclear whether and how light quality affects its toxicity on aquatic macrophytes. In this study, we investigated the effects of Cd on aquatic macrophytes Potamogeton crispus under different light qualities (white, blue, and red light). We evaluated morphological and photo-physiological traits, as well as the cellular antioxidant defense system. Our findings indicate that P. crispus under Cd stress showed notable damage in leaf morphology, decreased photosynthetic efficiency, inhibited HCO3- uptake, and reduced antioxidant enzyme activities, as well as oxidative damage indicated by MDA accumulation and superoxide (O2-) overproduction. However, compared with white or red light under Cd stress, blue light reduced structural damage and oxidative stress caused by Cd while increasing pigment synthesis and photosynthetic efficiency, as well as increasing ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity. In conclusion, the changes induced by blue light in P. crispus's photosynthesis and antioxidant system strengthen its tolerance to Cd. Further research on signal transmission in relation to light quality in Cd-exposed aquatic plants is still needed.

Macrophages display functional phenotypic plasticity. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection induces polarizations of liver macrophages either to M1-like pro-inflammatory phenotype or to M2-like anti-inflammatory phenotype. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) signaling exists in various non-neuronal cells including hepatocytes and some immune cells. Here we report that macrophages express functional GABAergic signaling components and activation of type A GABA receptors (GABAARs) promotes M2-polarization thus advancing HBV replication. Notably, intraperitoneal injection of GABA or the GABAAR agonist muscimol increased HBV replication in HBV-carrier mice that were generated by hydrodynamical injection of adeno-associated virus/HBV1.2 plasmids (pAAV/HBV1.2). The GABA-augmented HBV replication in HBV-carrier mice was significantly reduced by the GABAAR inhibitor picrotoxin although picrotoxin had no significant effect on serum HBsAg levels in control HBV-carrier mice. Depletion of liver macrophages by liposomal clodronate treatment also significantly reduced the GABA-augmented HBV replication. Yet adoptive transfer of liver macrophages isolated from GABA-treated donor HBV-carrier mice into the liposomal clodronate-pretreated recipient HBV-carrier mice restored HBV replication. Moreover, GABA or muscimol treatment increased the expression of "M2" cytokines in macrophages, but had no direct effect on HBV replication in the HepG2.2.15 cells, HBV1.3-transfected Huh7, HepG2, or HepaRG cells, or HBV-infected Huh7-NTCP cells. Taken together, these results suggest that increasing GABA signaling in the liver promotes HBV replication in HBV-carrier mice by suppressing the immunity of liver macrophages, but not by increasing the susceptibility of hepatocytes to HBV infection. Our study shows that a previously unknown GABAergic system in liver macrophage has an essential role in HBV replication.

Refined and deodorized camellia oil has been reported to contain a high amount of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol esters (3-MCPDE) due to the high-temperature deodorization step. To reduce 3-MCPDE in camellia oil, the physical refining process of camellia oil was simulated on a laboratory scale. Response surface methodology (RSM) was designed to modify and optimize the refining process with five processing parameters (water degumming dosage, degumming temperature, activated clay dosage, deodorization temperature and deodorization time). The optimized new refining approach achieved a 76.9% reduction in 3-MCPDE contents, in which the degumming moisture was 2.97%, the degumming temperature was 50.5 °C, the activated clay dosage was 2.69%, the deodorizing temperature was 230 °C, and the deodorizing time was 90 min. A significance test and analysis of variance results demonstrated that the deodorization temperature and deodorization time contributed significantly to the reduction of 3-MCPD ester. The joint interaction effects of activated clay dosage and deodorization temperature were significant for 3-MCPD ester formation.
