BACKGROUND: The nck-associated protein 1 (NCKAP1) of the disulfidptosis-related gene is essential in programmed cell death. However, a comprehensive analysis of the biological significance of NCKAP1 in pan-cancer is lacking. METHODS: Gene expression matrices and clinical expression information of cancers were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Genotype Tissue Expression (GTEX) databases. A comprehensive analysis of NCKAP1 expression, biological function, gene mutation, immune cell infiltration, DNA methylation, and drug sensitivity profiles in pan-cancer was performed using the Timer2.0, HPA, GEPIA, STRING, cBioPortal, UALCAN and CellMiner databases. The prognostic value of NCKAP1 was investigated based on COX regression analysis and the Kaplan-Meier(K-M) curves. A nomogram was established to verify the clinical value of NCKAP1 for LUAD. The correlation between NCKAP1 and immune cells and signaling pathways were investigated by single-sample gene set enrichment analysis(ssGSEA). Validation was performed using PCR, Western Blot (WB), and Transwell assays. RESULT: Significant differences in expression levels, mutation levels, and methylation levels of NCKAP1 between tumor and normal samples. NCKAP1 affects the prognosis of various cancers. NCKAP1 is strongly associated with microsatellite instability (MSI) and tumor mutational burden (TMB). The Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses indicate that NCKAP1 is strongly associated with cell death and tumor immunity. The expression of NCKAP1 affects the sensitivity to various drugs. Moreover, NCKAP1 is an independent predictor of prognosis in LUAD patients. The results of ssGSEA showed that elevated NCKAP1 expression was positively correlated with multiple immune-related signaling pathways. PCR analysis showed that the expression of NCKAP1 was increased in LUAD cells. Transwell invasion assay showed that overexpression of NCKAP1 resulted in enhanced invasion of LUAD cells. CONCLUSIONS: We comprehensively analyzed the relationship between NCKAP1 and pan-cancer and its potential clinical value. NCKAP1 could be a potential immune marker for various cancers (especially LUAD), providing new insights and insights for cancer therapy.

The shift to an environmentally friendly material economy requires renewable resource exploration. This shift may depend on lignin valorization. Lignin is an aromatic polymer that makes up one-third of total lingo-cellulosic biomass and is separated into large amounts for biofuel and paper manufacture. This renewable polymer is readily available at a very low cost as nearly all the lignin that is produced each year (90-100 million tons) is simply burned as a low-value fuel. Lignin offers potential qualities for many applications, and yet it is underutilized. This Perspective highlights lignin-based material prospects and problems in food packaging, antimicrobial, and agricultural applications. The first half will discuss the present and future studies on exploiting lignin as an addition to improve food packaging's mechanical, gas, UV, bioactive molecules, polyphenols, and antioxidant qualities. Second, lignin's antibacterial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses will be discussed. In conclusion, lignin agriculture will be discussed in the food industries.

OBJECTIVES: Injury to the tibiofibular syndesmosis is a common complication of ankle fractures. Currently, it is challenging to determine the stability of the tibiofibular joint caused by ankle fractures during surgery. This study aims to establish a standardized method for dynamically evaluating the stability of the inferior tibiofibular joint under intraoperative ultrasound and assess its utility in surgery, thereby assisting in determining the necessity for fixation of the inferior tibiofibular joint after fracture reduction and fixation. METHODS: The stability of the inferior tibiofibular joint was assessed using an intraoperative ultrasonic external rotation stress test, with a torque set at 7.2 N·m. The measured parameters included the width of the inferior tibiofibular space in neutral (N) and external rotation (E) positions, stretch ratio (E/N), and injured/healthy side stretch ratio (I/H). Patients with Weber B or C type ankle fractures were selected as participants. RESULTS: For the case with Weber C fracture, the N measurement was 4.22 mm after fracture fixation, while E measured 5.77 mm and E/N ratio was 1.37, which were larger than those on the healthy side (N: 4.17, E: 4.50, E/N:1.08), with an I/H ratio of 1.27. Intraoperative X-ray revealed instability of the inferior tibiofibular joint. After inserting a tibiofibular screw, the N measurement was 4.20 mm, while the E measurement recorded 4.32 mm, resulting in an E/N ratio of 1.03 and an I/H ratio of 0.95, indicating improved joint stability. For the Weber B fracture case, the N measurement was 3.55 mm after fracture fixation, while E measured 3.98 mm and the E/N ratio was 1.12, slightly lower than those on the healthy side (N: 3.94, E: 4.47, E/N: 1.13), with an I/H ratio of 0.99. The intraoperative X-ray revealed stability of the inferior tibiofibular joint. Therefore, no further fixation was performed on it. CONCLUSION: Standardized intraoperative ultrasound stress test allows for real-time, dynamic assessment of the stability of the inferior tibiofibular joint after ankle fracture reduction and fixation, which can help guide the fixation of the inferior tibiofibular joint, thereby reducing the risk of postoperative traumatic arthritis.

Background: Lung cancer continues to be a problem faced by all of humanity. It is the cancer with the highest morbidity and mortality in the world, and the most common histological type of lung cancer is lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), accounting for about 40% of lung malignant tumors. This study was conducted to discuss and explore the immune-related biomarkers and pathways during the development and progression of LUAD and their relationship with immunocyte infiltration. Methods: The cohorts of data used in this study were downloaded from the Gene Expression Complex (GEO) database and the Cancer Genome Atlas Program (TCGA) database. Through the analysis of differential expression analysis, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator(LASSO), selecting the module with the highest correlation with LUAD progression, and then the HUB gene was further determined. The Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) were then used to study the function of these genes. Single-sample GSEA (ssGSEA) analysis was used to investigate the penetration of 28 immunocytes and their relationship with HUB genes. Finally, the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to evaluate these HUB genes accurately to diagnose LUAD. In addition, additional cohorts were used for external validation. Based on the TCGA database, the effect of the HUB genes on the prognosis of LUAD patients was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier curve. The mRNA levels of some HUB genes in cancer cells and normal cells were analyzed by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Results: The turquoise module with the highest correlation with LUAD was identified among the seven modules obtained with WGCNA. Three hundred fifty-four differential genes were chosen. After LASSO analysis, 12 HUB genes were chosen as candidate biomarkers for LUAD expression. According to the immune infiltration results, CD4 + T cells, B cells, and NK cells were high in LUAD sample tissue. The ROC curve showed that all 12 HUB genes had a high diagnostic value. Finally, the functional enrichment analysis suggested that the HUB gene is mainly related to inflammatory and immune responses. According to the RT-qPCR study, we found that the expression of DPYSL2, OCIAD2, and FABP4 in A549 was higher than BEAS-2B. The expression content of DPYSL2 was lower in H1299 than in BEAS-2B. However, the expression difference of FABP4 and OCIAD2 genes in H1299 lung cancer cells was insignificant, but both showed a trend of increase. Conclusions: The mechanism of LUAD pathogenesis and progression is closely linked to T cells, B cells, and monocytes. 12 HUB genes(ADAMTS8, CD36, DPYSL2, FABP4, FGFR4, HBA2, OCIAD2, PARP1, PLEKHH2, STX11, TCF21, TNNC1) may participate in the progression of LUAD via immune-related signaling pathways.

Background: Ginsenoside F2 (GF2), a minor component of Panax ginseng, has been reported to possess a wide variety of pharmacological activities. However, its effects on glucose metabolism have not yet been reported. Here, we investigated the underlying signaling pathways involved in its effects on hepatic glucose. Methods: HepG2 cells were used to establish insulin-resistant (IR) model and treated with GF2. Cell viability and glucose uptake-related genes were also examined by real-time PCR and immunoblots. Results: Cell viability assays showed that GF2 up to 50 µM did not affect normal and IR-HepG2 cell viability. GF2 reduced oxidative stress by inhibiting phosphorylation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling components such as c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), and p38 MAPK, and reducing the nuclear translocation of NF-κB. Furthermore, GF2 activated PI3K/AKT signaling, upregulated the levels of glucose transporter 2 (GLUT-2) and GLUT-4 in IR-HepG2 cells, and promoted glucose absorption. At the same time, GF2 reduced phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and glucose-6-phosphatase expression as well as inhibiting gluconeogenesis. Conclusion: Overall, GF2 improved glucose metabolism disorders by reducing cellular oxidative stress in IR-HepG2 cells via MAPK signaling, participating in the PI3K/AKT/GSK-3ß signaling pathway, promoting glycogen synthesis, and inhibiting gluconeogenesis.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of preoperative chemotherapy on long-term survival (≥1 month) in patients with thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) and conditions suitable for chemotherapy using data from surveillance, epidemiology, and end-result databases. Methods: This retrospective study controlled for confounding factors by propensity score matching (PSM), analyzed overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) by Kaplan-Meier methods, and analyzed factors affecting the prognosis of patients undergoing surgery for thymic epithelial tumors by univariate and multifactorial Cox regression. Results: A total of 2,451 patients who underwent surgery for TETs were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Preoperative chemotherapy significantly improved OS and CSS in patients with stage III/IV TETs compared to patients without preoperative chemotherapy. Subgroup analysis showed that patients younger than 60 years of age with TETs, patients with thymic carcinoma, and patients with TETs with multiple cancers were more likely to benefit from preoperative chemotherapy. Conclusion: This study found that preoperative chemotherapy is a viable option for advanced thymoma with favorable overall and cancer-specific survival rates, but patient history and physical condition should be fully considered in conjunction with diagnostic imaging findings to assess patient tolerance to chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: Many studies have shown that cytochrome P450 (CYP) gene polymorphisms are usually associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. To explore the association of CYP2C8 and CYP2J2 gene polymorphisms with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH) in the Han Chinese population. METHODS: Forty HICH patients and 40 control subjects were recruited for this study. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) (rs1058932, rs2275622) in the CYP2C8 gene and two SNPs (rs2271800, rs1155002) in the CYP2J2 gene were selected for genotyping by direct sequencing. Statistical analysis was applied to examine the effect of genetic variation on HICH. RESULTS: We found that variant alleles of CYP2C8 rs1058932 (A) and rs2275622 (C) were both significantly associated with HICH, especially in females. We also found significant associations of CYP2C8 rs1058932 (A) and rs2275622 (C) variant alleles with poor outcomes in HICH patients, especially in males. CONCLUSIONS: CYP2C8 gene polymorphisms might increase the risk of HICH in the Han Chinese population and might lead to poor outcomes. This finding adds to the body of literature supporting novel therapeutic strategies for HICH.

Lipase hydrolysis is an effective method to develop different functional types of lipids. In this study, tuna oil was partially hydrolyzed at 30% and 60% by Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase (TL 100 L) and Candida Antarctica lipase A (ADL), respectively, to obtain lipid-modified acylglycerols. The lipidomic profiling of the acylglycerols was investigated by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS and GC-MS to clarify the lipid modification effect of these two lipases on tuna oil. The results showed that 247 kinds of acylglycerols and 23 kinds of fatty acids were identified in the five samples. In the ADL group, the content of triacylglycerols (TAG) and diacylglycerols (DAG) increased by 4.93% and 114.38%, respectively, with an increase in the hydrolysis degree (HD), while there was a decreasing trend in the TL 100 L group. TL 100 L had a better enrichment effect on DHA, while ADL was more inclined to enrich EPA and hydrolyze saturated fatty acids. Cluster analysis showed that the lipids obtained by the hydrolysis of TL 100 L and ADL were significantly different in the cluster analysis of TAG, DAG, and monoacylglycerols (MAG). TL 100 L has strong TAG selectivity and a strong ability to hydrolyze acylglycerols, while ADL has the potential to synthesize functional lipids containing omega-3 PUFAs, especially DAG.

Panax quinquefolius L. has attracted extensive attention worldwide because of its prominent pharmacological properties on type 2 diabetes, cancers, central nervous system, and cardiovascular diseases. Ginsenosides are active phytochemicals of P. quinquefolius, which can be classified as propanaxdiol (PPD)-type, propanaxtriol (PPT)-type, oleanane-type, and ocotillol-type oligo-glycosides depending on the skeleton of aglycone. Recently, advanced analytical and isolated methods including ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem with mass detector, preparative high-performance liquid chromatography, and high speed counter-current chromatography have been used to isolate and identify minor components in P. quinquefolius, which accelerates the clarification of the material basis. However, the poor bioavailability and undetermined bio-metabolism of most saponins have greatly hindered both the development of medicines and the identification of their real active constituents. Thus, it is essential to consider the bio-metabolism of constituents before and after absorption. In this review, we described the structures of minor ginsenosides in P. quinquefolius, including naturally occurring protype compounds and their in vivo metabolites. The preclinical and clinical pharmacological studies of the ginsenosides in the past few years were also summarized. The review will promote the reacquaint of minor saponins on the growing appreciation of their biological role in P. quinquefolius.

Compared to conventional artificial nerve guide conduits (NGCs) prepared using natural polymers or synthetic polymers, acellular nerve grafts (ACNGs) derived from natural nerves with eliminated immune components have natural bionic advantages in composition and structure that polymer materials do not have. To further optimize the repair effect of ACNGs, in this study, we used a composite technology based on supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extraction to process the peripheral nerve of a large mammal, the Yorkshire pig, and obtained an innovative Acellular nerve xenografts (ANXs, namely, CD + scCO2 NG). After scCO2 extraction, the fat and DNA content in CD + scCO2 NG has been removed to the greatest extent, which can better supported cell adhesion and proliferation, inducing an extremely weak inflammatory response. Interestingly, the protein in the CD + scCO2 NG was primarily involved in signaling pathways related to axon guidance. Moreover, compared with the pure chemical decellularized nerve graft (CD NG), the DRG axons grew naturally on the CD + scCO2 NG membrane and extended long distances. In vivo studies further revealed that the regenerated nerve axons had basically crossed the CD + scCO2 NG 3 weeks after surgery. 12 weeks after surgery, CD + scCO2 NG was similar to autologous nerves in improving the quality of nerve regeneration, target muscle morphology and motor function recovery and was significantly better than hollow NGCs and CD NG. Therefore, we believe that the fully decellularized and fat-free porcine ACNGs may be the most promising "bridge" for repairing human nerve defects at this stage and for some time to come.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is difficult to diagnose and resistant to therapy and has a poor prognosis. Autophagy plays a vital role in PDAC development and progression. This study aimed to establish an autophagy-related gene (ARG) signature to predict the prognosis of patients with PDAC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The expression profiles of PDAC and healthy pancreatic tissues were obtained from The Cancer Genome of Atlas (TCGA) and GTEx (Genotype-Tissue Expression) databases, respectively. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed on differentially expressed ARGs to identify the optimal prognosis-related genes. RESULTS: A total of 73 ARGs demonstrated significant differences in expression levels between PDAC and healthy pancreatic tissues. Several pathways that play crucial roles in biological processes were identified via enrichment analyses. Furthermore, an ARG signature was established based on overall survival-related ARGs (CASP4, BAK1, PIK3R4, CASP8, BIRC5, RPTOR, and CAPN1) using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression. Cox regression analysis confirmed that the 7-gene signature was an independent prognostic factor for patients with PDAC (P<0.001). In addition, the GSE21501 and GSE28735 datasets were used to validate the predictive value of the prognostic model for PDAC. We also constructed a clinical nomogram with a concordance index of 0.712 to predict the overall survival of patients by integrating clinical characteristics and the ARG signature. Calibration curves substantiated fine concordance between nomogram prediction and actual observation. CONCLUSION: We constructed a new ARG-related prognostic model, which can be a prognostic biomarker and offers insights into identifying potential therapeutic targets for PDAC.

The issue of medication noncompliance has resulted in major risks to public safety and financial loss. The new omnipresent medicine enabled by the Internet of things offers fascinating new possibilities. Additionally, an in-home healthcare station (IHHS), it is necessary to meet the rapidly increasing need for routine nursing and on-site diagnosis and prognosis. This article proposes a universal and preventive strategy to drug management based on intelligent and interactive packaging (I2Pack) and IMedBox. The controlled delamination material (CDM) seals and regulates wireless technologies in novel medicine packaging. As such, wearable biomedical sensors may capture a variety of crucial parameters via wireless communication. On-site treatment and prediction of these critical factors are made possible by high-performance architecture. The user interface is also highlighted to make surgery easier for the elderly, disabled, and patients. Land testing incorporates and validates an approach for prototyping I2Pack and iMedBox. Additionally, sustainability, increased product safety, and quality standards are crucial throughout the life sciences. To achieve these standards, intelligent packaging is also used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. These technologies will continuously monitor the quality of a product and communicate with the user. Data carriers, indications, and sensors are the three most important groups. They are not widely used at the moment, although their potential is well understood. Intelligent packaging should be used in these sectors and the functionality of the systems and the values presented in this analysis.

ABSTRACT: To achieve a deeper understanding of patients who developed esophageal cancer (EC) as a second primary malignancy, which may help guide in clinical practice for these patients in the future.In the primary cohort, EC patients with a prior malignancy were identified from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end result 18 database. The 5 most common types of prior cancers were picked out based on the frequency of occurrence. In addition, Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests were performed to investigate the survival impacts of prior cancers on EC patients. Besides, a competing-risk model was constructed to explore the relationship between EC-treatment and EC-specific mortality. In the secondary cohort, patients with stage I-III (N0M0) EC from 2004 to 2014 were enrolled. After propensity score matching, univariate and multivariate Cox analyses were developed to determine the prognostic factors for EC patients.A total of 1199 EC patients with a prior cancer were identified in the primary cohort. The 5 most common sites of prior cancers were prostate, female breast, bladder, lung and bronchus, and larynx. Kaplan-Meier analyses revealed that EC patients with prior prostate cancer and bladder cancer had the best overall survival (OS), while those with prior cancers of larynx and lung and bronchus had the worst OS. Fine and Gray competing risks analysis indicated that the administration of surgery was closely associated with better EC-specific survival (P < .001). In the secondary cohort, multivariate Cox analyses found that age at diagnosis, race, tumor grade, tumor extent, nodal status and metastasis stage, histology, and the administration of surgery were prognostic factors for OS and cancer-specific survival in EC patients. Besides, the existence of a prior cancer was an independent prognostic factor for cancer-specific survival.EC remains to be the most important cause of death in EC patients with a prior cancer. EC related treatment should be actively adopted in patients with a prior cancer, as they were more likely to die from EC than the prior cancer. EC patients with a prior cancer had comparable OS than those without.

Double sex and mab-3-related transcription factor 1 (Dmrt1), which is expressed in goat male germline stem cells (mGSCs) and Sertoli cells, is one of the most conserved transcription factors involved in sex determination. In this study, we highlighted the role of Dmrt1 in balancing the innate immune response in goat mGSCs. Dmrt1 recruited promyelocytic leukemia zinc finger (Plzf), also known as zinc finger and BTB domain-containing protein 16 (Zbtb16), to repress the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-dependent inflammatory signaling pathway and nuclear factor (NF)-κB. Knockdown of Dmrt1 in seminiferous tubules resulted in widespread degeneration of germ and somatic cells, while the expression of proinflammatory factors were significantly enhanced. We also demonstrated that Dmrt1 stimulated proliferation of mGSCs, but repressed apoptosis caused by the immune response. Thus, Dmrt1 is sufficient to reduce inflammation in the testes, thereby establishing the stability of spermatogenesis and the testicular microenvironment.

RNA interference technology is a powerful tool with substantially clinical prospects for carcinoma therapy, in which efficiency and specificity of delivery of dsRNA remains a critical issue. Herein, aiming at delivery of dsRNA in efficient and safe way, we constructed targeting delivery platform (CTL-PEG-FA) by grafting curdlan with trilysine through click reaction, then modifying with PEG linked folic acid. The CTL-PEG-FA vector exhibited excellent gene binding capacity to condense siRNA and dramatically reduced cytotoxicity. Increased cell uptake of CTL-PEG-FA/Bcl-2 siRNA was achieved by the synergism of folate mediated endocytosis and charge interaction, and further causing severe HepG2 cells injury through apoptosis mechanism after down-regulation of Bcl-2 protein. In vivo experiments, CTL-PEG-FA/Bcl-2 siRNA complex distinctly accumulated in tumor site and significantly inhibited the growth of tumor, while no obvious toxicity was observed. Therefore, well-performed CTL-PEG-FA with excellent biocompatibility, has the potential to be the candidate of gene therapy for clinical applications.

Compared with non-degradable materials, biodegradable biomaterials play an increasingly important role in the repairing of severe bone defects, and have attracted extensive attention from researchers. In the treatment of bone defects, scaffolds made of biodegradable materials can provide a crawling bridge for new bone tissue in the gap and a platform for cells and growth factors to play a physiological role, which will eventually be degraded and absorbed in the body and be replaced by the new bone tissue. Traditional biodegradable materials include polymers, ceramics and metals, which have been used in bone defect repairing for many years. Although these materials have more or fewer shortcomings, they are still the cornerstone of our development of a new generation of degradable materials. With the rapid development of modern science and technology, in the twenty-first century, more and more kinds of new biodegradable materials emerge in endlessly, such as new intelligent micro-nano materials and cell-based products. At the same time, there are many new fabrication technologies of improving biodegradable materials, such as modular fabrication, 3D and 4D printing, interface reinforcement and nanotechnology. This review will introduce various kinds of biodegradable materials commonly used in bone defect repairing, especially the newly emerging materials and their fabrication technology in recent years, and look forward to the future research direction, hoping to provide researchers in the field with some inspiration and reference.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the analgesic effect of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in combination with celiac plexus block (CPB), relative to SBRT alone, in locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed medical records of all patients with LAPC, who received SBRT between 1 January 2017 to 31 August 2019 at our center. The average numeric rating scale (NRS) of ≥3 was used in all patients at admission. We recorded average and worst NRS in a 24-hour period, and daily narcotic doses before SBRT, followed by weekly for 1 month and monthly for 3 months. RESULTS: A total of 23 patients in the SBRT group and 12 under SBRT+CPB who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled. All patients in the SBRT+CPB group received CPB within 10 days after SBRT. Pain intensity and narcotic consumption were comparable in both groups at initial assessment. However, a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in average NRS was recorded in the SBRT+CPB group relative to SBRT at 2, 3 and 4 weeks after SBRT. A comparison of daily narcotic consumption with baseline values showed a significant decrease in the SBRT+CPB group at 3 and 4 weeks after SBRT (P < 0.05), while no significant differences were observed in the SBRT group. CONCLUSION: CPB after SBRT appears to be an effective therapeutic option in patients with LAPC and warrants further evaluation with increased number of patients in prospective clinical trials.

In the future, plant based phytochemicals will be considered as efficient replacement sources of chemical preservatives, to act as potential bio-preservatives. We investigated the antibacterial and antioxidant activity of red cabbage (RC) extracts using different solvents. Among all extracts, chloroform extract exhibited strong antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Hence, the phytochemical constitutions of the RC chloroform extract was examined by GC-MS analysis, and further, based on molecular docking analysis, revealed 2-Methoxy-4-vinylphenol and benzofuran as two major compounds found to be possessing higher degrees of interaction with DNA gyrase (4PLB; -8.63 Kcal.mol-1) and lipoprotein (LpxC-8.229 Kcal.mol-1), respectively, of the bacterial cell wall, which leads to higher antimicrobial efficacy. Further, it was confirmed with that the in vivo Caenorhabditis elegans model (but no cytotoxic effect) was exhibited in the MCF-7 cell line. Thus, we investigated the influence of this extract on the shelf life of meat under refrigeration storage. The physicochemical properties were observed periodically, and microbial analysis was conducted. The shelf life of the beef was enhanced (up to eight days) in terms of microbial and physiochemical properties, at 4 ± 2 °C when compared to control. We concluded that chloroform extract of RC has potential as a natural preservative in the meat processing industry.

Albumin molecules are extensively used as biocompatible coatings, and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) materials are widely used for antifouling. PEG materials have excellent antifouling property because of their strong surface hydration. Our previous research indicates that hydration at the PEG/bovine serum albumin solution interface is stronger than that at the PEG/water interface. This research shows that this observation is general for different types of albumin molecules. Different albumins including bovine, porcine, rat, rabbit, and sheep serum albumins were studied in this research. It was found that the hydration at the PEG methacrylate (pOEGMA)/albumin solution interface is always stronger than that at the pOEGMA/water interface. Here, we define "strong interfacial hydration" as "ordered strongly hydrogen-bonded interfacial water". We believe that such a strong hydration is because of the strong hydration on the albumin surface, leading to its biocompatible property. All of the albumin molecules demonstrated stronger hydration on the pOEGMA surface compared to other protein molecules such as lysozyme and fibrinogen. The strong hydration on albumin molecules is related to the high surface coverage of glutamic acid and lysine with similar amounts.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy and safety of catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) for first-line treatment of popliteal and infrapopliteal acute limb ischemia. METHODS: A total of 28 consecutive patients (30 limbs) who underwent CDT for treatment of popliteal and infrapopliteal acute limb ischemia of thromboembolic origin between March 2012 and December 2017 were enrolled in this study. Per the Society for Vascular Surgery, limbs were classified into three runoff score groups: <5, good; 5 to 10, compromised; and >10, poor. The primary end points were primary patency and limb salvage assessed by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Secondary end points were technical success and clinical success. The Society for Vascular Surgery-recommended scale for gauging changes in clinical status was used to assess clinical success. Safety of the procedure was evaluated on the basis of periprocedural complications according to the Society of Interventional Radiology classification system. RESULTS: Technical success was achieved in 25 (83.33%) treated limbs. Improved clinical status (grade +3/+2) was achieved in 93.33% of limbs. Primary patency and limb salvage for the entire cohort were 76.67% and 90% at 6 months and 60.0% and 76.67% at 12 months, respectively. The patency rate at 6 months and 12 months was 91.67% and 83.33% for the good runoff group, 80% and 60% for the compromised runoff group, and 50% and 25% for the poor runoff group, respectively. The patency rate of the good runoff group was significantly higher compared with that of the poor runoff group (P = .004). Major amputation rate and mortality rate were 16.67% and 7.14%, respectively, at 12 months. The reintervention rate was 3.57% at 6 months and 21.42% at 12 months. CONCLUSIONS: CDT is safe and effective for revascularization of smaller vessel acute arterial thromboembolism as a primary therapy. However, more studies with a larger sample are warranted.
