RESUMO

A 5-year-old neutered male domestic shorthaired cat was presented with neurological signs. A primary cardiac lymphoma (PCL) with metastasis to the meninges of the brain was diagnosed histologically. Immunohistochemistry confirmed a B-cell lymphoma. Reports of PCL in cats are scarce. The current case describes a primary cardiac B-cell lymphoma in a cat confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry, and underscores the significance of histopathology for definitive diagnosis.

RESUMO

A 13-year-old, female Welsh corgi had a clinical history of haematuria and cystitis for 2-3 months. A 4 × 3 × 2 cm mass was excised surgically from the apex of the urinary bladder. A primary urinary bladder osteosarcoma was diagnosed histologically. Primary urinary bladder osteosarcoma is a rare tumour in man and animals. To the author's knowledge, there is no previously published report of a primary canine urinary bladder osteosarcoma.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ki67 index, tumor associated macrophages (TAMs) and mast cells (MCs) are associated with malignancies in animal and human neoplasms including colorectal carcinomas (CRC). This has not been assessed in canine CRC. Given similar genetic abnormalities between human and canine CRC, we assessed Ki-67 and mitotic indices, TAMs and MC count (MCC) in canine CRC (n = 17). TAMs and MCC were compared with those in adenomas (n = 13) and control (n = 9). RESULTS: Ki-67 index in CRC (17.13 ± 11.50) was strongly correlated (r = 0.98, p < 0.05) with mitotic index (3.52 ± 1.80). MCC was higher (p < 0.05) in CRC (6.30 ± 3.98) than in adenomas (0.78 ± 0.77) and control (0.35 ± 0.33). The results suggest that Ki-67 index and MCC are associated with malignancy in canine CRC. Higher average TAMs were counted in adenomas (21.30 ± 20.70) and in CRC (11.00 ± 9.82) than in the control (7.69 ± 7.26), although the differences were not significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Ki-67 index, TAMs and MCC in canine CRC were recorded for the first time in this study. Ki-67 index and MCC are associated with malignancy in canine CRC. Quantitative assessment of MCs and Ki-67 coupled with mitotic index and other clinical parameters may help in evaluating malignancy in canine CRC. TAMs likely play a role in the development of canine colorectal tumors. Further studies to determine the clinical significance of these parameters for prognostic, chemo-preventive and chemotherapeutic purposes in canine colorectal tumors are recommended.

RESUMO

Cutaneous amyloidosis occurs as primary localized form or secondary to systemic amyloidosis. In dogs, cutaneous amyloidosis is reported in association with localized plasma cell proliferation or cutaneous extramedullary plasmacytoma. Primary cutaneous amyloidosis is a very rare condition in dogs. There is paucity of information and published report on primary nodular cutaneous amyloidosis in dogs. This report describes a case of primary nodular cutaneous amyloidosis for the first time in a male Golden Retriever.

RESUMO

A study was conducted to assess the type and prevalence of abnormalities occurring in the female reproductive tracts of 201 Zebu cattle of Fogera type (161 cows and 40 heifers) slaughtered at Bahir-Dar town, north-west Ethiopia. Out of the 201 female genital tracts collected and examined, abnormalities were recorded in 74 (36.8%). The most common abnormalities encountered were ovariobursal adhesion (5.5%), endometritis (3.9%) and cystic ovaries (3.5%). Other abnormalities recorded were ovarian hypoplasia, vaginitis, cervicitis, tortuous cervical canal, mucometra, vaginal cyst, parovarian cyst, hypoplastic cervical rings, cervical cyst, freemartins, closed external cervical os, uterine and oviducts adhesion, cystic uterine tube, remnant of retained fetal membrane and cyst in the uterine wall. The prevalence of the abnormalities was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in parous than in nulliparous cows. Moreover, evidence of ovarian cyclicity was found in 51.6% and 30% of non-pregnant parous and nulliparous cows examined, respectively. This study revealed that reproductive tract abnormalities seem to be an important problem with possible subsequent infertility in Fogera-type Zebu cows in the study area.

RESUMO

Toxicity (1/IGC(50)) in the Tetrahymena population growth assay and reactivity (1/EC(50)) with the thiol moiety of the cysteine residue of glutathione (GSH) were determined for a series of aromatic isothiocyanates (NCSs). Comparison of both toxicity and reactivity between the analogues revealed that derivatives with the NCS-moiety attached directly to an aromatic ring (e.g., phenyl derivatives) are less toxic and less reactive than those with the NCS attached to an aliphatic carbon (e.g., benzyl derivatives). These differences in potency are hypothesized to relate to difference in the ease of the Michael reaction, the proposed molecular mechanism. 1,4-Phenylene diisothiocyanate is more toxic and more reactive than its mono-NCS homologue. While there is good predictivity for the phenyl and naphthyl derivatives with the model log(1/IGC(50)) = 0.545(log K(ow)) + 16.21A(max) - 5.91, based on the 1-octanol/water partition coefficient (K(ow)) and maximum acceptor superdelocalizability (A(max)), toxicity of the other derivatives, which are outside the structural domain of the model training set, are poorly fitted. Owing to hydrolysis, the benzoyl, and cinnamyl analogues are less toxic than predicted by their thiol reactivity; however, the toxicity of the remaining compounds is modeled by the relationship log(1/IGC(50)) = 1.77 [log (1/EC(50))] + 0.60; n = 12, s = 0.34, r(2) = 0.718, q(2) = 0.629, F = 26.

RESUMO

A study was conducted on an outbreak of Marek's disease in a commercial poultry farm containing 8500 chickens in central Ethiopia. On repeated visits, farm and flock history was collected, sick birds were examined and clinical signs and daily mortality were recorded. A total of 80 (27 sick and 53 dead) birds 12-22 weeks old, were collected, autopsied and examined. The mortality rate was 46% for the first 14 weeks of the outbreak. Acute and chronic (classical) forms of the disease, the respective occurrence of which varied significantly (p<0.01) in young (14.6% vs 85.4%) and adults (48.7% vs 51.31%) were manifested. All the autopsied birds had gross and microscopic lesions indicative of Marek's disease in the peripheral nerve(s) and/or visceral organs. Lesions involving peripheral nerves and visceral lymphomas were recorded mainly in adults (28/35, 80%) and young birds (34/45, 75%), respectively. These differences in the two age groups were statistically significant (p<0.01). Young birds seem to be highly susceptible to the acute disease. Poor management, overstocking and lack of vaccination might have favoured the outbreak. Marek's disease causes considerable economic loss and is a major threat to poultry production in Ethiopia. This report emphasizes that Marek's disease should be considered as a disease of economic significance in chicken production in Ethiopia and warrants due attention.

RESUMO

Tissues from ureter and renal pelvis of 18 sows naturally (n = 15) and experimentally (n = 3) infected with Actinobaculum suis (former Actinomyces, Eubacterium suis) were studied using light and scanning as well as transmission electron microscopy. The results were compared with the findings from 11 clinically healthy sows as controls. The lesions in both the ureter and renal pelvis of naturally and experimentally infected animals were similar. In severe cases there were necrotizing ureteritis and pyelitis with accumulation of bacterial colonies in some cases. Several superficial epithelial cells were found phagocytosing necrotic debris. In mild cases the main lesions included epithelial cell hyperplasia, desquamation of the superficial epithelial cells and goblet cell metaplasia with intraepithelial cyst formation. The goblet cells were found in the superficial as well as in the intermediate cell layers. Generally, it was observed that severe purulent ureteritis and pyelitis/ pyelonephritis in sows were to be expected only in mixed infection of A. suis with other bacteria. The findings were compared and discussed with the changes in the infected urinary bladder of sows and the alterations induced by urinary tract infection in man.

RESUMO

A survey of Sarcocystis was conducted in cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys and chickens. A total of 671 haematoxylin-eosin (H-E) stained muscle tissue samples, including diaphragm, masseter, cardiac and oesophageal musculatures were examined. Additionally, cardiac muscle samples from 40 fetuses were included. An infestation rate of 93% in sheep, 82% in cattle, 81% in goats, 16.6% in donkeys and 6.6% in chickens was noted. The infestation rate of diaphragm, masseter, cardiac and oesophageal musculatures seems to be similar. None of the 40 fetal heart muscle samples from bovine, ovine, caprine and donkey fetuses examined harboured Sarcocystis. An attempt was made to demonstrate the possible occurrence of human Sarcocystis and a negative result was obtained. The possible impact of Sarcocystis on animal health in Ethiopia is discussed.
