RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Altered metabolic pathways have recently been considered as potential drivers of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) for the study of drug therapeutic targets. However, our understanding of the metabolite profile during IPF formation is lacking. METHODS: To comprehensively characterize the metabolic disorders of IPF, a mouse IPF model was constructed by intratracheal injection of bleomycin into C57BL/6J male mice, and lung tissues from IPF mice at 7 days, 14 days, and controls were analyzed by pathology, immunohistochemistry, and Western Blots. Meanwhile, serum metabolite detections were conducted in IPF mice using LC-ESI-MS/MS, KEGG metabolic pathway analysis was applied to the differential metabolites, and biomarkers were screened using machine learning algorithms. RESULTS: We analyzed the levels of 1465 metabolites and found that more than one-third of the metabolites were altered during IPF formation. There were 504 and 565 metabolites that differed between M7 and M14 and controls, respectively, while 201 differential metabolites were found between M7 and M14. In IPF mouse sera, about 80% of differential metabolite expression was downregulated. Lipids accounted for more than 80% of the differential metabolite species with down-regulated expression. The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis of differential metabolites was mainly enriched to pathways such as the metabolism of glycerolipids and glycerophospholipids. Eight metabolites were screened by a machine learning random forest model, and receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) assessed them as ideal diagnostic tools. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, we have identified disturbances in serum lipid metabolism associated with the formation of pulmonary fibrosis, contributing to the understanding of the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is a major disease impacting men's health worldwide. Peplau, who is known as "the mother of psychiatric society," developed an interpersonal relationship theory for nursing. Implementation of this theory in practice has been shown to positively impact patients' quality of life and reduce adverse symptoms after surgery. AIM: To investigate the effects of a nursing model based on Peplau's interpersonal relationship theory combined with bladder function training on patients with prostate cancer. METHODS: Eighty-nine patients with prostate cancer who underwent transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) participated in this study. These patients were admitted to The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University or Dushu Lake Hospital Affiliated to Soochow University between January 2020 and April 2021. Patients were randomized into either the Peplau nursing group (n = 44) or a routine nursing group (n = 45). The routine nursing group received routine care and bladder function training, while the Peplau care group received care that integrated concepts from the Peplau interpersonal relationship theory as well as bladder function training. The urinary incontinence symptoms of the two groups were recorded, and the respective International Prostate Symptom Scores (IPSS), Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy- Spiritual Well-Being (FACIT-Sp) scores, and quality of life (QOL) scores for each group were compared before and after three months of nursing intervention. RESULTS: During the intervention period, the duration of urinary incontinence, frequency, number and amount of urinary incontinence were significantly greater in the routine nursing group compared to the Peplau care group (P < 0.05). The indicators of the routine nursing group were 7.13 ± 2.42 days, 8.23 ± 2.75 times, and 1.24 ± 0.42 L, while those of the Peplau care group were 4.74 ± 1.85 d, 4.21 ± 1.26 times, and 0.56 ± 0.11 L, respectively. After three months of intervention, the mean IPSS score of the routine nursing group was significantly reduced (P < 0.05), while the mean FACIT-Sp and QOL scores were significantly increased (P < 0.05). The mean IPSS score in the Peplau nursing group was significantly lower compared to the routine nursing group, while the FACIT-Sp and QOL scores were higher (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: A nursing model based on Peplau's interpersonal relationship theory combined with bladder function training can significantly improve prostate function and urinary symptoms, resulting in the restoration of physiological function and improvement in the QOL of patients with prostate cancer following TURP.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study performed dosimetry studies and secondary cancer risk assessments on using electronic portal imaging device (EPID) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as image guided tools for the early lung cancer patients treated with SBRT. METHODS: The imaging doses from MV-EPID and kV-CBCT of the Edge accelerator were retrospectively added to sixty-one SBRT treatment plans of early lung cancer patients. The MV-EPID imaging dose (6MV Photon beam) was calculated in Pinnacle TPS, and the kV-CBCT imaging dose was simulated and calculated by modeling of the kV energy beam in TPS using Pinnacle automatic modeling program. Three types of plans, namely PlanEPID, PlanCBCT and Planorigin, were generated with incorporating doses of EPID, CBCT and no imaging, respectively, for analysis. The effects of imaging doses on dose-volume-histogram (DVH) and plan quality were analyzed, and the excess absolute risk (EAR) of secondary cancer for ipsilateral lung was evaluated. RESULTS: The regions that received less than 50 cGy were significantly impacted by the imaging doses, while the isodose lines greater than 1000 cGy were barely changed. The DVH values of ipsilateral lung increased the most in PlanEPID, followed by PlanCBCT. Compared to Planorigin on the average, the estimated EAR of ipsilateral lung in PlanEPID increased by 3.43%, while the corresponding EAR increase in PlanCBCT was much smaller (about 0.4%). Considering only the contribution of the imaging dose, the EAR values for the ipsilateral lung due to the MV-EPID dose in 5 years,10 years and 15 years were 1.49 cases, 2.09 cases and 2.88 cases per 104PY respectively, and those due to the kV-CBCT dose were about 9 times lower, correspondingly. CONCLUSIONS: The imaging doses produced by MV-EPID and kV-CBCT had little effects on the target dose coverage. The secondary cancer risk caused by MV-EPID dose is more than 8.5 times that of kV-CBCT.

RESUMO

To screen the sensitive cell lines of active fraction from clove(AFC) on human colon cancer cells, investigate the effects of AFC on the cells proliferation and apoptosis as well as PI3 K/Akt/mTOR(phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt/mechanistic target of rapamycin) signaling pathways involved, and reveal the mechanism of AFC for inducing apoptosis of human colorectal carcinoma cells. Cell counting kit-8(CCK-8) assay was used to detect the cytotoxic effect of different concentrations of AFC. AFC-induced apoptosis was detected by Hoechst 33258 fluorescence staining and Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining. HCT116 cells were treated with AFC with or without pretreatment with insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰ(IGF-Ⅰ), and then the protein expression levels of caspase-3, caspase-9, poly ADP-ribose polymerase(PARP), PI3 K, p-PI3 K, Akt, p-Akt, mTOR and p-mTOR in PI3 K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway were detected by Western blot. RESULTS:: showed that the most obvious inhibitory effect of AFC was on human colon cancer HCT116 cells, and the optimal AFC treatment time was 48 hours. After AFC treatment, typical apoptotic features such as nuclear chromatin concentration, nuclear fragmentation and apoptotic bodies appeared in a dose-dependent manner. Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining showed that as compared with the control group, 50 and 100 µg·mL~(-1) AFC groups increased the apoptosis rate of HCT116 cells significantly(P<0.001); AFC activated caspase-9, cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved PARP in a concentration-dependent manner. The protein expression levels of cleaved caspase-3/procaspase-3, cleaved PARP/PARP and caspase-9/ß-actin after treatment of AFC(100 µg·mL~(-1)) were significantly different from those in the control group(P<0.001). The relative protein expression of p-PI3 K, p-Akt and p-mTOR decreased in a concentration dependent manner, while Akt and mTOR showed no significant differences among groups. The ratios of p-PI3 K/PI3 K, p-Akt/Akt and p-mTOR/mTOR in the AFC groups(50 and 100 µg·mL~(-1)) were significantly lower than those in the control group(P<0.01). Its combination with IGF-Ⅰ weakened the effect of AFC in inhibiting PI3 K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. The ratios of p-Akt/Akt and p-mTOR/mTOR in the AFC+IGF-Ⅰ group were significantly enhanced as compared with the AFC group(P<0.05). Apoptosis-related protein expression levels(cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved PARP) in HCT116 cells treated with AFC+IGF-Ⅰ were also down regulated. As compared with the AFC group, the ratios of cleaved caspase-3/procaspase-3 and cleaved PARP/PARP in the AFC+IGF-Ⅰ group were significantly decreased(P<0.01). In summary, AFC activated caspase-mediated cascades and induced HCT116 cells apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner, which may be associated with the inhibition of the PI3 K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Xpert Bladder Cancer is a detection method developed in recent years, designed with the functions of integrating sample automatically, nucleic acid amplification, and target sequence detection. It is a urine assay targeting five mRNAs (CRH, IGF2, UPK1B, ANXA10, and ABL1). The purpose of this article is to review the accuracy of Xpert Bladder Cancer in the follow-up diagnosis of bladder cancer and evaluate the role of Xpert Bladder Cancer in detecting the recurrence of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer in the round. METHODS: In the database of Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, the articles published up to October 13, 2020, were searched and screened based on the exclusion and inclusion criteria, and data were extracted from the included studies. The sensitivity, specificity, negative likelihood ratio, positive likelihood ratio summary of receiver operating characteristic curves, and diagnostic odds ratio were combined by the Meta-DiSc 1.4 software. The Stata 12.0 software was used to obtain the assessment of publication bias. RESULTS: A total of 8 articles involving eight fourfold tables were finally identified. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of Xpert Bladder Cancer in the diagnosis of bladder cancer were 0.71 and 0.81, respectively. The positive likelihood ratio and negative likelihood ratio were 3.74 and 0.34, respectively. The area under the curve was 0.8407. The diagnostic odds ratio was 11.99. Deeks' funnel plot asymmetry test manifested no publication bias. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, Xpert Bladder Cancer presents high accuracy and specificity in monitoring bladder cancer compared with cystoscopy. More researches are still required to further confirm this conclusion.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate whether the addition of oxaliplatin to a neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) regimen could improve survival benefit in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients. We retrospectively analysed 73 LARC patients (cT2-4 and/or cN1-2) who received preoperative CRT with capecitabine followed by surgery (arm A, 43 patients) or capecitabine plus oxaliplatin followed by surgery (arm B, 30 patients). The main endpoints of the study were pathologic complete response (pCR) rate, overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). The secondary endpoints included the sphincter preservation rate and safety. The pCR for arms A and B were 28% and 17% (P = 0.267). In arms A and B, the mean OS was 84.287 months (95% CI 68.413-100.160) and 106.333 months (95% CI 99.281-113.386) (P = 0.185); the mean DFS was 72.812 months (95% CI 56.271-89.353) and 95.073 months (95% CI 83.392-106.754) (P = 0.310); and the sphincter preservation rates were 72% and 67%, respectively (P = 0.619). The incidence of grade 3 toxicity was much higher in arm B than in arm A (57% vs. 21%, P = 0.002). Adding oxaliplatin to a preoperative CRT regimen for LARC did not improve the survival benefits of patients or increase toxicity.

RESUMO

N6 -isopentenyladenosine (i6 A) is an RNA modification found in cytokinins, which regulate plant growth/differentiation, and a subset of tRNAs, where it improves the efficiency and accuracy of translation. The installation and removal of this modification is mediated by prenyltransferases and cytokinin oxidases, and a chemical approach to selective deprenylation of i6 A has not been developed. We show that a selected group of oxoammonium cations function as artificial deprenylases to promote highly selective deprenylation of i6 A in nucleosides, oligonucleotides, and live cells. Importantly, other epigenetic modifications, amino acid residues, and natural products were not affected. Moreover, a significant phenotype difference in the Arabidopsis thaliana shoot and root development was observed with incubation of the cation. These results establish these small organic molecules as direct chemical regulators/artificial deprenylases of i6 A.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Handan Eye Study (HES), a large population-based cohort study in rural area of northern China, was one of the few studies focusing on the major eye diseases of rural Chinese population. The aim of this study was to introduce the design, methodology and to assess the data quality of the follow-up phase of HES. METHODS: All participants were recruited in Yongnian county of Handan city between 2012 and 2013. Main outcomes were measured by visual quality scales and ocular examinations. We performed the Chi-square test to make comparison of categorical data among groups, One-way analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to make comparison of continuous data among groups, a post-hoc test was done to make further pairwise comparison. Inter-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Kappa coefficients were used to evaluate the consistency between different operators. Logistic regression was used to explore the influence factors of death, odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to estimate the effect size of each influence factor. RESULTS: The follow-up rate was 85.3%. Subjects were classified into three groups: the follow-up group (n = 5394), the loss to follow-up group (n = 929), and the dead group (n = 507), comparison of their baseline information was done. Compared with the other two groups, age of the dead group (66.52 ±â€Š10.31 years) was the oldest (Z = 651.293, P < 0.001), male proportion was the highest (59.0%) (χ = 42.351, P < 0.001), only 65.9% of the dead finished middle school education (Z = 205.354, P < 0.001). The marriage percentage, body mass index (BMI), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and intra-ocular pressure of the dead group was the lowest either. Spherical equivalent error (SER) of the dead group was the highest. Besides, history of smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease were more common in the dead group. Multivariate analysis showed that age (OR = 1.901, 95% CI: 1.074-1.108), gender (OR = 0.317, 95% CI: 0.224-0.448), and BCVA (OR = 0.282, 95% CI: 0.158-0.503) were associated with death. While between the follow-up group and the loss to follow-up group, there was only difference on age, gender, BMI, systolic blood pressure and SER. The Cronbach coefficients of all scales used in the follow-up were ≥0.63 and the cumulative variances were ≥0.61, indicating good reliability and validity. The ICCs and Kappa coefficients between different operators were ≥0.69. CONCLUSIONS: HES has a high follow-up rate and a low risk of loss to follow-up bias. Age, gender, and BCVA are influence factors of death. Specifically, male subjects are at a higher risk of death than female, age is a risk factor of death while BCVA is a protective factor for death.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a severe type of neuropathic pain which is often inadequately managed using conventional therapies. In this report, we present the first case of TN treated with gasserian ganglion nerve coblation (NC). CASE SUMMARY: A 58-year-old man presented with right facial pain, mostly localized in the right zygomatic zone, alveolar region, and jaws. Similar to acupuncture and shock pain, the pain lasted about five seconds after each attack before resolving unaided. A diagnosis of TN was made, after which treatment with acupuncture therapy and oral carbamazepine was given. However, the pain was not satisfactorily controlled. Subsequently, gasserian ganglion NC of the right trigeminal nerve guided by computed tomography (CT) was performed on the patient. Following this procedure, the right zygomatic, alveolar, submandibular, and cheek pain disappeared completely. The right zygomatic and alveolar areas experienced mild numbness (level II). At 1-, 2-, 3-, and 6-mo follow-ups after surgery, the patient was painless and the numbness score was level I. CONCLUSION: CT-guided gasserian ganglion (NC) is an effective treatment for TN and is associated with less or no postoperative numbness or hypoesthesia in comparison with current standard-of-care approaches.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most common cancers in Southern China, Southeast Asia. Radiotherapy is the main treatment for NPC. Still, about 20% of patients with NPC have a recurrence. No effective serum biomarkers are available for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (rNPC) to date. This study aimed to explore whether amyloid beta (A4) precursor protein (APP) might serve as a valuable diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for patients with rNPC. METHODS: In a previous study, a tandem mass tag-based proteomic test was performed, which screened 59 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) between nonrecurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (nrNPC) and rNPC. In this study, a protein-protein interaction was conducted to screen the key proteins among the 59 DEPs. APP was validated and evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 70 serum samples [recurrence (n = 35) and no-recurrence (n = 35)]. Also, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted to evaluate the predictive value of APP. RESULTS: The area under the ROC curve was 0.666 (95% CI: 0.514-0.818, P = 0.044). The best cutoff point of the relative expression levels for APP was 1.23 (concentration = 16.95 ng/mL), at which the sensitivity was 55.2% and the specificity was 90.9%. CONCLUSION: The findings indicated that APP might be a valuable diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for patients with rNPC.

RESUMO

Resistance to chemotherapy is a main obstacle for effective treatment of gastric cancer, the mechanism of which is still poorly understood. Forkhead box M1 (FoxM1) plays an important role in chemo-resistance of various tumors. This study aimed to explore whether FoxM1 mediated resistance of the gastric cancer cell line SGC7901 to the chemotherapy agent cisplatin (DDP). In the study, we detected FoxM1 and Mcl-1 expression via real time-PCR and western blot and demonstrated that FoxM1 is overexpressed in cisplatin-resistance GC cells and Mcl-1 expression is regulated by FoxM1. We examined SGC7901/DDP cell viability by MTT assay, which revealed that suppression of the FoxM1/Mcl-1 pathway impaired cell viability and thus increased sensitivity to cisplatin in gastric cancer cells. Taken together, the study implied that the FoxM1/Mcl-1 pathway may overcome cispaltin resistance of gastric cancer and provide a new therapeutic target for the treatment of gastric cancer.

RESUMO

Drug resistance remains a major unresolved obstacle for gastric cancer (GC) treatment. Recently, increasing studies have showen that microRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in cancer chemotherapeutic resistance and can potentially be applied to reverse drug resistance in cancers. The relationship between miRNA-149 expression and cisplatin (DDP) resistance in GC cells is still unknown. Here, we detected miR-149 expression by using RT-PCR and found that expression of miR-149 was downregulated in SGC7901/DDP cells compared with SGC7901cells, indicating a role of miR-149 in determining cisplatin-resistance of GC cells. Then, SGC7901/DDP cells were tansfected with miR-149 mimics, MTT assay was performed to determine SGC7901/DDP cell viability, and showed that overexpression of miR-149 inhibited the cell viability after cisplatin treatment, suggesting that up-regulation of miR-149 enhanced SGC7901/DDP cell sensitivity to cisplatin. Furthermore, we confirmed that Forkhead box M1 (FoxM1) is a direct target of miR-149 in SGC7901/DDP cells by using luciferase reporter assay. Besides, we also demonstrated that miR-149 enhances SGC7901/DDP cell sensitivity to cisplatin by downregulating FoxM1 expression. In summary, our data provide new insights that miR-149 plays an important role in determining sensitivity of cisplatin-resistant GC cells by targeting FoxM1 and suggest that miR-149 could be a potential target for reversing drug resistance in GC.

RESUMO

A new gall wasp species, Dryocosmus zhuili Liu et Zhu, is herein described from the southeastern Fujian province of China. The new species induces galls on trees of Henry's chestnut, Castanea henryi, which is also a native host for the notorious Oriental chestnut gall wasp (OCGW, Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu). D. zhuili overlaps with OCGW in emergence time and induces galls morphologically similar to that of OCGW on similar plant parts. In a previous study, we reported considerable divergence between mtDNA CO1 (mitochondrial DNA Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) sequences of these wasps and the true OCGW wasps and suggested the existence of a cryptic species. Herein, we confirm the identity of the new species based on morphological and biological differences and provide a formal description. Although the new species is relatively easily separated from OCGW on basis of morphology, field identification involving the two species can still be problematic because of their small body size, highly similar gall morphology, and other life history traits. We further discussed the potential of the new species to be a pest for the chestnut industry and the consequences of accidental introduction of this species into nonnative areas, especially with regard to the bisexual reproduction mode of the new species in contrast to the parthenogenetic reproduction mode of OCGW.

RESUMO

HOX genes are transcription factors that control morphogenesis, organogenesis and differentiation. Increasing evidence suggests that HOX genes play a role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression; however few studies have defined the functional roles and mechanisms of action. In the present study, we used siRNA and forced-expression in multiple cell lines to define the role of HOXA7 in the regulation of proliferation of HCC in vitro and in vivo. Knockdown of endogenous HOXA7 decreased the proliferation of HepG2 and QGY-7703 cells. These changes were not associated with significant changes in cyclin D1 and CDK4. However, downregulation of HOXA7 significantly reduced cyclin E1 and CDK2 protein levels. Conversely, overexpression of HOXA7 in QSG-7701 cells stimulated proliferation and increased cyclin E1 and CDK2 protein levels. Our results confirmed that HOXA7 promoted cell proliferation, and these changes were mediated by cyclin E1/CDK2. These observations contribute to our understanding of the important roles of HOXA7 in HCC development and progression and HOXA7 could be a promising molecular target for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for HCC.

RESUMO

The transdermal delivery system (TDS) is able to obtain a systemic therapeutic effect by administration through the skin, which has low side effects and is able to maintain a sustained blood concentration. However, due to the barrier presented by the stratum corneum, numerous drugs have poor percutaneous permeability. Therefore, the improvement of skin permeability is key to TDS. The main method of promoting transdermal absorption is through the usage of penetration enhancers. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a commonly used penetration enhancer, which has antiinflammatory analgesic effects and is able to penetrate the skin. Retinoic acid (RA) and lipolanthionine peptide (LP) may also benefit the permeation efficiency of TDS. Therefore, the present study examined the function of DMSO, RA and LP as penetration enhancers in TDS. Firstly, the optimum concentration of DMSO was confirmed by detecting the expression of the LacZ gene in vitro. Secondly, different combinations of LP, RA and DMSO were applied to mouse skin to analyze the penetration enhancer combination with the greatest efficacy. All the animals were divided into five groups: The RA + LP + DMSO + pORFLacZ group, the RA + DMSO + pORFLacZ group, the LP + DMSO + pORFLacZ group, the DMSO + pORF-LacZ group and the control group. Skin was soaked in combinations of LP, RA and DMSO for seven days and then the pORFLacZ plasmids were daubed onto the skin once daily three days. On the 11th day, all the animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and the skin and blood samples were collected. The blood samples were used to detect the expression of the LacZ gene by quantitative polymerase chain reaction and the skin samples were used to detect the expression of claudin4 and zonula occluden1 (ZO1) proteins by immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis. The results demonstrated that the combination of LP, RA and DMSO exhibited the greatest transdermal delivery efficiency, which verified that RA and LP were able to increase the penetration effects. Following treatment with LP, the symptoms of dermal edema were relieved and the capillaries contracted, which suggested that LP was a safe and effective penetration enhancer able to reduce the sideeffects caused by DMSO. The present study provides a guideline for the synthesis of novel penetration enhancers.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the use of eye care services in a rural population in North China and to analyze the factors associated with underuse of these services. METHODS: In a cross-sectional population-based study, demographic, health and vision-related information including use of eye care services were determined during a face-to-face interview. A single visit to an eye care provider qualified as "use" of eye care services. RESULTS: Of 6612 participants, 754 (11.4%, 95% confidence interval, CI, 8.7-14.1%) had used eye care services. The most common reason cited for not seeing an eye care provider was "no need" (n = 5754). Of the 5754 who thought that there was no need to see an ophthalmologist, 3458 (60.1%) were found to have one or more type of eye disease, including glaucoma (56, 1.0%), cataract (1056, 18.4%), age-related macular degeneration (AMD; 164, 2.9%) and refractive error (3048, 53.0%). Also, 74 (1.3%) and 409 (7.1%) of the 5754 participants had visual impairment (<20/60) according to best-corrected visual acuity and presenting visual acuity, respectively. In a multiple regression model, participants who had glaucoma (adjusted odds ratio, OR, 4.0, 95% CI 3.0-5.4), AMD (adjusted OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.2-2.3) or refractive error (adjusted OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.1-1.8), were more likely to visit an eye care provider. CONCLUSION: A high proportion of the Chinese rural population had never used eye care services although three fifths had eye diseases. Further efforts towards better education of the general population about common eye problems as well as increasing the number of ocular health providers would be necessary in future.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe the prevalence and risk factors for pterygium in a rural adult Chinese population. METHODS: A total of 7557 people aged 30 years and over were randomly selected from 13 villages in a rural county, Yongnian, within Handan district, Hebei Province of China. All eligible subjects were invited to undergo a comprehensive eye examination. A slit-lamp was used to examine the anterior segment for evidence of pterygium. Pterygium was graded for severity (G1 to G3) by visibility of episcleral vessels. RESULTS: Of 6685 participants (88.5% of 7557) included in this study, pterygium was present in 401 (6.0%). Using direct standardization to the 2000 China population census for rural residents, the prevalence of pterygium was 7.1% (95% confidence interval [CI], 6.5-7.8%) among subjects aged 40+ years, and 4.8% (95% CI 4.3-5.3%) when including those aged 30-39 years. Pterygium was more common in men than in women (age-adjusted odds ratio [OR] 2.0, 95% CI 1.4-2.8). Prevalence increased with age (OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.6-2.1 per decade increase in age). Current smoking appeared to be protective (OR 0.5, 95% CI 0.4-0.7). Of eyes with any pterygium, 4.6% (95% CI 1.9-7.3%) had low vision. CONCLUSION: Approximately one in ten adults had pterygium in this rural Chinese population. Age and male sex were positively, and current smoking negatively associated with the prevalence of pterygium.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment in the world and in China. However, data on the prevalence of cataract based on standardized lens grading protocols from mainland China are limited. This paper estimated the age- and gender-specific prevalence and risk factor for cataract METHODS: In a population-based Chinese sample, participants underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, including assessment of cortical, nuclear, posterior subcapsular (PSC) and mixed lens opacities from slit-lamp grading using the Lens Opacities Classification System III. RESULTS: Of the 7,557 eligible subjects, 6,830 took part in the study (90.4% response rate), and 6,544 participants (95.8%, mean age 52.0 ± 11.8 years) had lens data for analyses. The prevalence of any cataract surgery in at least one eye was 0.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.62, 1.06), with similar rates between men and women. The overall prevalence of any cataract or cataract surgery was 20.8% (95% CI, 19.8, 21.8), higher in women than in men after adjusting for age (23.6% vs 17.6%; OR: 1.78; 95% CI: 1.54-2.07). When distinct lens opacity was categorized in each eye as cortical, nuclear, PSC or mixed, based on one randomly selected eye, cortical cataract was the most common distinct subtype (12.3%), followed by mixed (3.2%), nuclear (1.7%), and PSC (0.2%) cataract. The prevalence of all lens opacities increased with age (P < 0.001). After excluding other causes for visual impairment, the proportion of people with best corrected visual acuity <20/60 was 21% among those with PSC, and 12% among those with mixed opacities in the better-seeing eye. In multivariable logistic regression models, myopia was associated with all cataract types, while higher fasting plasma glucose and diabetes were only associated with PSC cataract. CONCLUSIONS: Cataract affects 20% of the population aged 30 years and older living in rural China, with cortical cataract the most common subtype. Risk factors for cataract include myopia and diabetes.

RESUMO

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) in the liver is an uncommon lesion of uncertain pathogenesis. In most cases, symptomatological imaging and clinical studies suggest malignancy. We report a case of liver IMT with imaging findings from positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS). This report was the first to depict a PET/CT scan of a liver IMT that revealed an inhomogeneous, intense (fluorine 18)-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose uptake. The CECT and CEUS images showed a hepatic artery supplying blood to the mass and necrosis. The characteristic histopathological features and the presence of spindle cells expressing smooth muscle actin, collagen fibers and lymphocytes allowed for the diagnosis of liver IMT. Recognizing such findings will help to achieve a correct diagnosis and may prevent inappropriate treatment.
