RESUMO

Dissolved black carbon (DBC) plays a crucial role in the migration and bioavailability of iron in water. However, the properties of DBC releasing under diverse pyrolysis conditions and dissolving processes have not been systematically studied. Here, the compositions of DBC released from biochar through redox processes dominated by bacteria and light were thoroughly studied. It was found that the DBC released from straw biochar possess more oxygen-containing functional groups and aromatic substances. The content of phenolic and carboxylic groups in DBC was increased under influence of microorganisms and light, respectively. The concentration of phenolic hydroxyl groups increased from 10.0∼57.5 mmol/gC to 6.6 ∼65.2 mmol/gC, and the concentration of carboxyl groups increased from 49.7∼97.5 mmol/gC to 62.1 ∼113.3 mmol/gC. Then the impacts of DBC on pyrite dissolution and microalgae growth were also investigated. The complexing Fe3+ was proved to play a predominant role in the dissolution of ferrous mineral in DBC solution. Due to complexing between iron ion and DBC, the amount of dissolved Fe in aquatic water may rise as a result of elevated number of aromatic components with oxygen containing groups and low molecular weight generated under light conditions. Fe-DBC complexations in solution significantly promoted microalga growth, which might be attributed to the stimulating effect of dissolved Fe on the chlorophyll synthesis. The results of study will deepen our understanding of the behavior and ultimate destiny of DBC released into an iron-rich environment under redox conditions.

Nicotine is an alkaloid found in tobacco. Human exposure to nicotine primarily occurs through the use of tobacco products. To date, limited nicotine pharmacokinetic data in animals have been reported. This study exposed male Sprague-Dawley rats to vehicle (and/or air) or four doses of nicotine via nose-only inhalation (INH), oral gavage (PO), and intravenous (IV) infusion. Plasma, six tissues (brain, heart, lung, liver, kidney, and muscle), and urine were collected at multiple timepoints from 5 minutes to 48 hours post-dose. The concentrations of nicotine, cotinine, and trans-3'-hydroxycotinine (3-OH-cotinine) were determined, and the pharmacokinetic profiles were compared among the four doses for each route. The results indicated that after single nicotine dose, nicotine bioavailability was 53% via PO. Across all the administration routes and doses, nicotine was quickly distributed to all six tissues; kidney had the highest nicotine and cotinine levels, and the lung had the highest 3-OH-cotinine levels; nicotine was metabolized extensively to cotinine and cotinine was metabolized to a lesser extent to 3-OH-cotinine; the elimination of plasma nicotine, cotinine, and 3-OH-cotinine followed first-order kinetics; plasma nicotine had a shorter half-life than cotinine or 3-OH-cotinine; the half-lives of plasma nicotine, cotinine, and 3-OH-cotinine were dose- and route-independent; and nicotine and cotinine were major urinary excretions followed by 3-OH-cotinine. Nicotine, cotinine, and 3-OH-cotinine levels in plasma, tissues, and urine exhibited dose-dependent increases. These study findings improve our understanding of the pharmacokinetics of nicotine, cotinine, and 3-OH-cotinine across different routes of exposure.

Despite being a major cyanide species in the process water, it is unclear how iron cyanide influences pyritic gold ore flotation as well as how lead ions influence pyritic gold ore flotation in the presence of iron cyanide. This study aims at revealing the interaction of Fe(CN)63- and lead ions in pyrite flotation to investigate the strong depressing effect of Fe(CN)63- on pyritic gold ore flotation and the significant activating effect of lead ions on pyritic gold ore flotation in the presence of Fe(CN)63- using flotation, zeta potential measurement and surface analysis methods. The flotation results showed that upon 5 × 10-5 mol/L Fe(CN)63- addition, pyrite recovery drastically decreased from about 51.3% to 8.6%, while the subsequent addition of 9.5 × 10-4 mol/L lead ions significantly activated pyrite with the recovery increasing from 8.6% to 91%, which demonstrated that Fe(CN)63- strongly depressed pyrite flotation, while lead ions completely activated pyrite in the presence of Fe(CN)63-. Zeta potential measurement, surface analysis using Cryogenic X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (Cryo-XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that Fe(CN)63- depression was attributed to the chemical adsorption of Fe(CN)63- on iron sites of pyrite as Prussian Blue (Fe[Fe(CN)6]); however, this hydrophilic layer could be covered totally by lead ions which adsorbed on as lead hydroxide/oxide through electrostatic interactions, which resulted in the significant activation effect of lead ions. The results from this study will lead to improved flotation of gold associated with pyrite in gold flotation plants.

Backgroud: Iron overload is a prevalent condition in the elderly, often associated with various degenerative diseases, including intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Nevertheless, the mechanisms responsible for iron ion accumulation in tissues and the mechanism that regulate iron homeostasis remain unclear. Transferrin receptor-1 (TFR1) serves as the primary cellular iron gate, playing a pivotal role in controlling intracellular iron levels, however its involvement in IDD pathogenesis and the underlying mechanism remains obscure. Methods: Firstly, IDD mice model was established to determine the iron metabolism associated proteins changes during IDD progression. Then CEP chondrocytes were isolated and treated with TBHP or pro-inflammatory cytokines to mimic pathological environment, western blotting, immunofluorescence assay and tissue staining were employed to explore the underlying mechanisms. Lastly, TfR1 siRNA and Feristatin II were employed and the degeneration of IDD was examined using micro-CT and immunohistochemical analysis. Results: We found that the IDD pathological environment, characterized by oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines, could enhance iron influx by upregulating TFR1 expression in a HIF-2α dependent manner. Excessive iron accumulation not only induces chondrocytes ferroptosis and exacerbates oxidative stress, but also triggers the innate immune response mediated by c-GAS/STING, by promoting mitochondrial damage and the release of mtDNA. The inhibition of STING through siRNA or the reduction of mtDNA replication using ethidium bromide alleviated the degeneration of CEP chondrocytes induced by iron overload. Conclusion: Our study systemically explored the role of TFR1 mediated iron homeostasis in IDD and its underlying mechanisms, implying that targeting TFR1 to maintain balanced iron homeostasis could offer a promising therapeutic approach for IDD management. The translational potential of this article: Our study demonstrated the close link between iron metabolism dysfunction and IDD, indicated that targeting TfR1 may be a novel therapeutic strategy for IDD.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence has shown that adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) are an effective therapeutic approach for managing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, further elucidation is required to determine their underlying immunomodulatory effect on the mRNA expression of T helper cell-related transcription factors (TFs) and cytokine release in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). AIM: To investigate the impact of ADSCs on the mRNA expression of TFs and cytokine release in PBMCs from colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with severe COVID-19 (CRC+ patients). METHODS: PBMCs from CRC+ patients (PBMCs-C+) and age-matched CRC patients (PBMCs-C) were stimulated and cultured in the presence/absence of ADSCs. The mRNA levels of T-box TF TBX21 (T-bet), GATA binding protein 3 (GATA-3), RAR-related orphan receptor C (RORC), and forkhead box P3 (FoxP3) in the PBMCs were determined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Culture supernatants were evaluated for levels of interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin 4 (IL-4), IL-17A, and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-ß1) using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: Compared with PBMCs-C, PBMCs-C+ exhibited higher mRNA levels of T-bet and RORC, and increased levels of IFN-γ and IL-17A. Additionally, a significant decrease in FoxP3 mRNA and TGF-ß1, as well as an increase in T-bet/GATA-3, RORC/FoxP3, IFN-γ/IL-4, and IL-17A/TGF-ß1 ratios were observed in PBMCs-C+. Furthermore, ADSCs significantly induced a functional regulatory T cell (Treg) subset, as evidenced by an increase in FoxP3 mRNA and TGF-ß1 release levels. This was accompanied by a significant decrease in the mRNA levels of T-bet and RORC, release of IFN-γ and IL-17A, and T-bet/GATA-3, RORC/FoxP3, IFN-γ/IL-4, and IL-17A/TGF-ß1 ratios, compared with the PBMCs-C+alone. CONCLUSION: The present in vitro studies showed that ADSCs contributed to the immunosuppressive effects on PBMCs-C+, favoring Treg responses. Thus, ADSC-based cell therapy could be a beneficial approach for patients with severe COVID-19 who fail to respond to conventional therapies.

PURPOSE: Present study was designed to investigate the association between muscular tissue desaturation and acute kidney injury (AKI) in older patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. METHOD: A total of 253 patients (≥ 65 years old) who underwent abdominal surgery with expected duration ≥ 2 h were enrolled. Muscular tissue oxygen saturation (SmtO2) was monitored at quadriceps and bilateral flanks during surgery. Muscular desaturation was defined as SmtO2 < 90% baseline lasting for > 60 s. The primary outcome was the incidence of AKI within postoperative 7 days. The association between muscular desaturation and AKI was analyzed by multivariable logistic regression model. The secondary outcomes indicated the other complications within postoperative 30 days. RESULTS: Among 236 patients, 44 (18.6%) of them developed AKI. The incidence of muscular desaturation at quadriceps was 28.8% (68/236). Patients with muscular desaturation had higher incidence of AKI than those without desaturation (27.9% [19/68], vs. 14.9% [25/168], P = 0.020). After adjustment of confounders, multivariable analysis showed that muscular desaturation at quadriceps was significantly associated with an increased risk of AKI (OR = 2.84, 95% CI 1.21-6.67, P = 0.016). Muscular desaturations at left and right flank were also associated with an increased risk of AKI (OR = 6.38, 95% CI 1.78-22.89, P = 0.004; OR = 8.90, 95% CI 1.42-45.63; P = 0.019, respectively). Furthermore, patients with muscular desaturation may have a higher risk of pulmonary complications, sepsis and stroke at 30-day follow-up. CONCLUSION: Muscular desaturation was associated with postoperative AKI in older patients undergoing major abdominal surgery which may serve as a predictor of AKI.

OBJECTIVE: Transferrin receptor-1 (TfR1) plays important roles in controlling cellular iron levels, but its role in OA pathology is unknown. Herein we aim to investigate the role of TfR1 in OA progression and its underlying mechanisms. METHODS: TfR1 expression in cartilage during OA development were examined both in vivo and in vitro. Then IL-1ß was used to induce chondrocytes degeneration in vitro and TfR1 siRNA was used for observing the effect of TfR1 in modulating iron homeostasis, mitochondrial function and degrading enzymes expression. Also the inhibitor of TfR1 was exploited to analyze the protective effect of TfR1 inhibition in vivo. RESULTS: TfR1 is elevated in OA cartilage and contributes to OA inflammation condition. Excess iron not only results in oxidative stress damage and sensitizes chondrocytes to ferroptosis, but also triggers c-GAS/STING-mediated inflammation by promoting mitochondrial destruction and the release of mtDNA. Silencing TfR1 using TfR1 siRNA not only reduced iron content in chondrocytes and inhibited oxidative stress, but also facilitated the mitophagy process and suppressed mtDNA/cGAS/STING-mediated inflammation. Importantly, we also found that Ferstatin II, a novel and selective TfR1 inhibitor, could substantially suppress TfR1 activity both in vivo and in vitro and ameliorated cartilage degeneration. CONCLUSION: Our work demonstrates that TfR1 mediated iron influx plays important roles in chondrocytes degeneration and OA pathogenesis, suggesting that maintaining iron homeostasis through the targeting of TfR1 may represent a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of OA.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical outcomes of endodontic microsurgery in complicated cases presenting with large or through-and-through lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively collected and analyzed preoperative, intraoperative, and follow-up data from 143 complicated cases that underwent endodontic microsurgery. Clinical outcomes were assessed in terms of tooth survival and surgery success. Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the survival rate and identify associated risk factors. Additionally, the success rate was compared across different postoperative periods, and potential factors contributing to surgical failure were identified through binary logistic regression. RESULTS: The overall survival and success rates were 93.0% and 91.7%, respectively. The Cox regression model identified four risk factors affecting tooth survival, including apicoectomy of four teeth (HR = 35.488; P = 0.0002), an open apex observed on preoperative radiographs (HR = 6.300; P = 0.025), the performance of guided tissue regeneration technique (HR = 8.846; P = 0.028), and a palatal surgical approach (HR = 8.685; P = 0.030). The success rate demonstrated an initial increase in the early postoperative period (from 0.5 to 2 years; P = 5.8124e-30), followed by stabilization (from 2 to 9 years; P = 0.298). Surgery success rate significantly declined when apicoectomy involved four teeth (OR = 109.412; P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Endodontic microsurgery demonstrates satisfactory outcomes in complicated cases, maintaining a stable success rate after two years. However, tooth survival and surgery success are significantly compromised when apicoectomy involves four teeth. Factors such as guided tissue regeneration, an open apex, and the palatal surgical approach are associated with an increased risk of tooth extraction. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Despite achieving acceptable outcomes in complicated cases, endodontic microsurgery is adversely affected by the apicoectomy of four teeth.

Currently, platinum agents remain the mainstay of chemotherapy for ovarian cancer (OC). However, cisplatin (DDP) resistance is a major reason for chemotherapy failure. Thus, it is extremely important to elucidate the mechanism of resistance to DDP. Here, we establish two DDP-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines and find that caseinolytic protease P (CLPP) level is significantly downregulated in DDP-resistant cell lines compared to wild-type ovarian cancer cell lines (SK-OV-3 and OVcar3). Next, we investigate the functions of CLPP in DDP-resistant and wild-type ovarian cancer cells using various assays, including cell counting kit-8 assay, western blot analysis, immunofluorescence staining, and detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis. Our results show that CLPP knockdown significantly increases the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50) and mitophagy of wild-type SK-OV-3 and OVcar3 cells, while CLPP overexpression reduces the IC 50 values and mitophagy of DDP-resistant SK-OV-3 and OVcar3 cells. Next, we perform database predictions and confirmation experiments, which show that heat shock protein family A member 8 (HSPA8) regulates CLPP protein stability. The dynamic effects of the HSPA8/CLPP axis in ovarian cancer cells are also examined. HSPA8 increases mitophagy and the IC 50 values of SK-OV-3 and OVcar3 cells but inhibits their ROS production and apoptosis. In addition, CLPP partly reverses the effects induced by HSPA8 in SK-OV-3 and OVcar3 cells. In conclusion, CLPP increases DDP resistance in ovarian cancer by inhibiting mitophagy and promoting cellular stress. Meanwhile, HSPA8 promotes the degradation of CLPP protein by regulating its stability.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron minerals widely existing in the natural aquatic environment can mediate the migration and transformation of organic pollutants. However, the mechanism of interaction between DOM and iron minerals in the microbial degradation of pollutants deserves further investigation. In this study, the mechanism of 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) biodegradation mediated by humic acid (HA) and three kinds of iron minerals (goethite, magnetite, and pyrite) was investigated. The results found that HA and iron minerals significantly accelerated the biodegradation process of EE2, and the highest degradation efficiency of EE2 (48%) was observed in the HA-mediated microbial system with pyrite under aerobic conditions. Furthermore, it had been demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals (HO•) was the main active substance responsible for the microbial degradation of EE2. HO• is primarily generated through the reaction between hydrogen peroxide secreted by microorganisms and Fe(II), with aerobic conditions being more conducive. The presence of iron minerals and HA could change the microbial communities in the EE2 biodegradation system. These findings provide new information for exploring the migration and transformation of pollutants by microorganisms in iron-rich environments.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have shown promising therapeutic options for acute lung injury (ALI) caused by multiple factors. Here, we evaluated the therapeutic potential of adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ADSCs) in trauma and hemorrhagic shock (THS)-induced ALI. METHODS: ALI model induced by THS was constructed by fractures plus abdominal trauma plus acute hemorrhage plus fluid resuscitation. The ADSCs group rats were generated by injecting 2 × 106 ADSCs at 0 and 1 h after THS. The sham, ALI, and ADSCs group rats were sacrificed at 24 h after resuscitation. The changes in lung histopathology, total protein in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory/anti-inflammatory cytokines, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic indicator, and the activity of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling in lung tissues were evaluated. RESULTS: Administration of the ADSCs reversed ALI induced by THS, including lung histopathological changes/scores, and BALF total protein concentration. Additionally, ADSCs therapy also significantly down-regulated mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6, up-regulated mRNA expression of anti-inflammatory IL-10, anti-apoptotic molecule Bcl-2, and anti-oxidative molecule HO-1 in THS rats. Furthermore, ADSCs suppressed the expression of TLR4 in lung tissue. CONCLUSION: Our data show that ADSCs administration can exert therapeutic effects on THS-induced ALI in rats and may provide beneficial in preventative strategies for ALI.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication after anesthesia and surgery, especially in the elderly. RNF146 has neuroprotective effects in cerebral ischemia, hypoxia, and chronic neurological diseases. However, whether RNF146 expression is related to the occurrence and development of POD remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine whether RNF146 is involved in the occurrence of POD. METHODS: (Sprague-Dawley) male rats (18 months old) were splenectomized under sevoflurane anesthesia. The cognitive function of rats at 1, 3, and 7 d after anesthesia and surgery was evaluated. Changes in the expression of neuroinflammatory cytokines, IL-6 and IL-10, and RNF146 were measured in the hippocampus in both control group (con) and anesthesia (AS) group. We examined cognitive outcomes and expression of inflammatory factors and RNF146 in con and AS mice using cluster analysis. RESULTS: The cognitive ability and mobility of rats after anesthesia and surgery at day 1, 3, and 7 decreased, especially at day 3. Similarly, the expression of neuroinflammatory factors and RNF146 increased after anesthesia and surgery at day 1, 3, and 7, and the increase was highest at day 3. The clustering and correlation analysis of RNF146 expression in the hippocampi of elderly rats revealed a correlation between POD and neuroinflammation resulting from anesthesia and surgery. CONCLUSION: Anesthesia and surgery can lead to POD and neuroinflammation. The expression of RNF146 correlates with delirium and neuroinflammation caused by anesthesia and surgery.

Since conventional therapy faces limitations in the field of different cancers as well as gastrointestinal cancers, that decrease the survival rate of patients, there is an urgent need to find new effective therapeutic approaches without the adverse effects of the traditional agents. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) attract much attention and are well known for their role in innate immunity. These peptides, in addition to their antimicrobial activity, exhibit strong anticancer potential against various types of malignancy. AMPs specifically target tumor cells and have selective toxicity for these cells without affecting normal cells. The compact carbon materials with huge specific surface area (SSA) and proper pore structure are highly desirable towards high-performance supercapacitors at the cell level. However, to well balance of porosity and density is still an on-going task. Herein, a universal and facile strategy of pre-oxidation-carbonization-activation is employed to prepare the dense microporous carbons from coal tar pitch. The optimized sample POCA800 not only possesses a well-developed porous structure with the SSA of 2142 m2 g-1 and total pore volume (Vt) of 1.540 cm3 g-1, but also exhibits a high packing density of 0.58 g cm-3 and proper graphitization. Owing to these advantages, POCA800 electrode at areal mass loading of 10 mg cm-2 shows a high specific capacitance of 300.8 F g-1 (174.5 F cm-3) at 0.5 A g-1 and good rate performance. The POCA800 based symmetrical supercapacitor with a total mass loading of 20 mg cm-2 displays a large energy density of 8.07 Wh kg-1 at 125 W kg-1 and remarkable cycling durability. It is revealed that the prepared density microporous carbons are promising for practical applications.

Cherenkov radiation (CR) excited by fast charges can serve as on-chip light sources with a nanoscale footprint and broad frequency range. The reversed CR, which usually occurs in media with the negative refractive index or negative group-velocity dispersion, is highly desired because it can effectively separate the radiated light from fast charges thanks to the obtuse radiation angle. However, reversed CR at the mid-infrared remains challenging due to the significant loss of conventional artificial structures. Here we observe mid-infrared analogue polaritonic reversed CR in a natural van der Waals (vdW) material (i.e., α-MoO3), whose hyperbolic phonon polaritons exhibit negative group velocity. Further, the real-space image results of analogue polaritonic reversed CR indicate that the radiation distributions and angles are closely related to the in-plane isofrequency contours of α-MoO3, which can be further tuned in the heterostructures based on α-MoO3. This work demonstrates that natural vdW heterostructures can be used as a promising platform of reversed CR to design on-chip mid-infrared nano-light sources.

Disinfection treatment is an indispensable water purification process, but it can leave trace concentrations of disinfectant in the purified water. Disinfectants oxidation can age plastic pipes and release hazardous microplastics and chemicals into drinking water. Lengths of commercially-available unplasticized polyvinyl chloride and polypropylene random copolymer water pipe were ground into particles and exposed to micro-molar concentrations of ClO2, NaClO, trichloroisocyanuric acid, or O3 for up to 75 days. The disinfectants aged the plastic and changed its surface morphology and functional groups. Meanwhile, disinfectants could significantly promote the release of organic matter from plastic pipes into the water. ClO2 generated the highest concentrations of organic matter in the leachates from both plastics. Plasticizers, antioxidants and low molecular weight organic matter were detected in all of the leachates. Leachate samples inhibited the proliferation of CT26 mouse colon cancer and induced oxidative stress in the cells. Even trace concentrations of residual disinfectant can constitute a drinking water risk.

BACKGROUND: Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients are often admitted to the hospital for severe morbidities. Prolonged intermittent renal replacement therapy (PIRRT) is required during the hospital staying. There are controversial opinions on the use of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) as vascular access for PIRRT in MHD patients. METHODS: Patients with AVF who accepted PIRRT in our center between January 2014 and June 2021 were retrospectively screened. AVF dysfunction and patient mortality were assessed as endpoints. Univariate and multivariate regression models were employed to identify the risk factors of AVF dysfunction. RESULTS: About 162 patients were included in our present study. Twenty-six experienced AVF dysfunction, of whom 53.8%, 19.2%, and 27.0% had percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty, surgical revision, and AVF reconstruction, respectively. The accumulated AVF dysfunction rates were 11.8%, 16.2%, and 21.0% in 1, 2, and 3 years, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that smoking (HR 2.750, 95% CI 1.181-6.402, p = 0.019), higher platelet (PLT, HR 1.009, 95% CI 1.000-1.017, p = 0.047), higher prothrombin activity (PTA, HR 1.039, 95% CI 1.012-1.066, p = 0.004), and lower diastolic blood pressure (DBP, HR 0.963, 95% CI 0.932-0.996, p = 0.026) were independent risk factors for AVF dysfunction. During the follow-up period, 37 patients died. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the use of AVF for PIRRT might not dramatically increase the incidence of AVF dysfunction. And, Smoking, lower DBP, higher PLT, and higher PTA were associated with increased AVF dysfunction.

Saliva is a complex biological fluid with a variety of biomolecules, such as DNA, RNA, proteins, metabolites and microbiota, which can be used for the screening and diagnosis of many diseases. In addition, saliva has the characteristics of simple collection, non-invasive and convenient storage, which gives it the potential to replace blood as a new main body of fluid biopsy, and it is an excellent biological diagnostic fluid. This review integrates recent studies and summarizes the research contents of salivaomics and the research progress of saliva in early diagnosis of oral and systemic diseases. This review aims to explore the value and prospect of saliva diagnosis in clinical application.

As emerging pollutants, microplastics (MPs) have aroused worldwide concern due to their ubiquitous distribution, environmental persistence, and potential ecological risks. However, the ageing mechanisms, environmental behaviours and risks of photoaged MPs mediated by environmental factors remain obscure. Herein, systems containing a light source, humic acid (HA) and Fe were established to investigate the natural photoaging process of MPs including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The dehydrochlorination reaction of PVC-MP was inhibited by HA and Fe, which resulted from the coeffect of photon competition, excited state quenching, radical deactivation or transformation, and defect structure destruction. In contrast, the enhanced fluorescence effect suggested that the photooxidation reactions of PET-MP were promoted by HA and Fe. Therefore, the presence of HA and Fe in the environment inhibited the photoreduction of MPs while favoring the photooxidative process. Additionally, the adsorption capacity for 17α-ethinylestradiol and the cytotoxicity of MPs were increased after ageing in the hv + HA and hv + HA + Fe systems, which was attributed to the changes in morphology, elements and functional groups. This study provided new insight into the ageing behaviours of MPs in the natural environment with widespread dissolved organic matter and Fe.
