OBJECTIVE: Cartilage and meniscus are important structures that maintain the health of the knee joint. Early detection of changes in the internal components of cartilage and meniscus before morphological changes occur is essential to prevent and delay the development of osteoarthritis (OA). This study was designed to determine the changes in the matrix composition of morphologically intact cartilage and meniscus during the acute phase of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, as well as the effect of different states of meniscus (intact or tear) on adjacent cartilage during the acute phase. METHODS: This cross-sectional study compared and analyzed 50 patients in the acute phase of ACL rupture who underwent surgical treatment and 66 age-, weight- and height-matched healthy volunteers from May 2022 to May 2023 at our institution. Mean T2 relaxation times and effect sizes in different regions of tibiofemoral articular cartilage and meniscus were compared between the two groups using the Mann-Whitney nonparametric t-test, and correlations between different meniscal states and adjacent cartilage were analyzed. RESULTS: Both in the lateral and medial compartments of the knee, T2 relaxation times were significantly higher in all subregions of cartilage and meniscus in the ACL rupture group (p < 0.05), and the site of injury was predominantly centered in the medial compartment (femur, p = 0.000; tibia, p = 0.000; anterior horn, p = 0.000). In the respective compartments, the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus showed a significant positive correlation with the mid-cartilage of the femoral and tibial (r = 0.566, p = 0.035; r = 0.611, p = 0.02); and the posterior horn of the medial meniscus showed a significant positive correlation with the posterior tibial cartilage (r = 0.668, p = 0.018). CONCLUSION: During the acute phase of ACL rupture, the internal composition of the cartilage and meniscus undergoes significant changes, even if the morphology is intact. More importantly, the state of the meniscus significantly affects the internal composition of the adjacent cartilage. This is an early warning sign of OA, which should be closely monitored and carefully managed in clinical practice.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to compare 45° and 60° of sagittal femoral tunnel angles in terms of anterior tibial translation (ATT), valgus angle and graft in situ force following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). METHODS: Ten porcine knees were subjected to the following loading conditions: (1) 89 N anterior tibial load at 35° (full extension), 60° and 90° of knee flexion and (2) 5 N m valgus tibial moment at 35° and 45° of knee flexion. ATT and graft in situ force of the intact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and ACLR were collected using a robotic universal force/moment sensor (UFS) testing system for (1) ACL intact, (2) ACL-deficient (ACLD) and (3) two different ACLR using different sagittal femoral tunnel angles (coronal 45°/sagittal 45° and coronal 45°/sagittal 60°). RESULTS: During the anterior tibial load, the femoral tunnel angle of ACLR knees at coronal 45°/sagittal 45° and 60° had significantly higher ATT than that of the ACL-intact knees at 60° of knee flexion (p < 0.05). The femoral tunnel angle of ACLR knees at coronal 45°/sagittal 60° had significantly lower graft in situ force than that of the ACL-intact knees at 60° and 90° of knee flexion (p < 0.05). During the valgus tibial moment, the femoral tunnel angle of ACLR knees at coronal 45°/sagittal 45° and 60° had significantly lower graft in situ force than that of the ACL-intact knees at all knee flexions (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The femoral tunnel angle of ACLR knees at coronal 45°/sagittal 45° provided similar ATT, valgus angle and graft in situ force to that of ACLR knees at coronal 45°/sagittal 60°. Therefore, both femoral tunnel angles could be used in ACLR, as the sagittal femoral tunnel angle does not appear to be relevant in post-operative knee stability. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Not applicable.

PURPOSE: To determine whether posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) buckling (angular change) is associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) status (intact or ruptured), meniscal bone angle (MBA), anterior tibial translation (ATT), body weight, femoral-tibial rotation (FTR), posterior tibial slope (PTS), PCL length and femoral-tibial distance (FTD) and to identify the factors that have the greatest influence. METHODS: All enrolled participants were scanned with a 3.0 T, 8-channel coil MRI system (Magnetom Verio; Siemens). Bone and soft tissue parameters were measured by MIMICS software for each subject and each measured parameter was correlated with PCL buckling phenomena. The correlated and statistically significant parameters were then analyzed by multiple linear regression to determine the magnitude of the effect of the different parameters on the PCL buckling phenomenon. RESULTS: A total of 116 subjects (50 ACL ruptured and 66 age, weight and height matched volunteers with uninjured knees) were enrolled. Among all measured parameters, there were 8 parameters that correlated with PCL angle (PCLA), of which ACL status had the strongest correlation with PCLA (r = - 0.67, p = < 0.001); and 7 parameters that correlated with PCL-posterior femoral cortex angle (PCL-PCA), of which ATT had the strongest correlation with PCL-PCA (r = 0.69, p = < 0.001). PCLIA was not significantly correlated with any of the measured parameters. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed four parameters can explain PCLA, of which ACL status had the strongest effect on PCLA (absolute value of standardized coefficient Beta was 0.508). Three parameters can explain PCL-PCA, of which ATT had the strongest effect on PCLIA (r = 0.69, p = < 0.001), ATT has the greatest effect on PCL-PCA (absolute value of normalized coefficient Beta is 0.523). CONCLUSIONS: PCLA may be a simple and easily reproducible and important supplement for the diagnosis of ACL injury; PCL-PCA is a simple and easily reproducible and important complementary tool for the detection of ATT. The use of PCLA is more recommended to aid in the diagnosis of ACL injury.

OBJECTIVES: It is now understood that pedicle screw loosening at the implant-bone interface can lead to poor screw-bone interface purchase and decreased fixation stability. Previous biomechanical tests used cadaveric vertebrae and pull-out or torque loads to assess the effect of the insertional direction of pedicle screws on screw loosening. However, these tests faced challenges in matching biomechanical differences among specimens and simulating in vivo loads applied on pedicle screws. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the insertional direction of pedicle screws on screw loosening using tension-compression-bending loads and synthetic bone vertebrae. METHODS: Polyaxial pedicle screws were inserted into nine synthetic bone vertebrae in three directions (three samples per group): cranial, parallel, and caudad (-10°, 0°, +10° of the pedicle screw rod to the upper plane of the vertebra, respectively). Pedicle screws in the vertebrae were loaded using a polyethylene block connected to a material testing machine. Tension-compression-bending loads (100N-250N) with 30,000 cycles were applied to the pedicle screws, and displacements were recorded and then cycle-displacement curve was drawn based on cycle number. Micro-CT scans were performed on the vertebrae after removing the pedicle screws to obtain images of the screw hole, and the screw hole volume was measured using imaging analysis software. Direct comparison of displacements was conducted via cycle-displacement curve. Screw hole volume was analyzed using analysis of variance. The correlation between the displacement, screw hole volume and the direction of pedicle screw was assessed by Spearman correlation analysis. RESULTS: The smallest displacements were observed in the caudad group, followed by the parallel and cranial groups. The caudad group had the smallest screw hole volume (p < 0.001 and p = 0.009 compared to the cranial and parallel groups, respectively), while the volume in the parallel group was greater than that in the cranial group (p = 0.003). Correlation analysis revealed that the insertional direction of the pedicle screw was associated with the displacement (p = -0.949, p < 0.001) and screw hole volume (p = -0.944, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Strong correlations were found between the insertional direction of the pedicle screw and relevant parameters, including displacement and screw hole volume. Pedicle screw insertion in the caudad direction resulted in the least pedicle screw loosening.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the microbial variations and biomarkers in the vaginal and oral environments of patients with human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer (CC) and to develop novel prediction models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 164 samples collected from both the vaginal tract and oral subgingival plaque of 82 women. The participants were divided into four distinct groups based on their vaginal and oral samples: the control group (Z/KZ, n = 22), abortion group (AB/KAB, n = 17), HPV-infected group (HP/KHP, n = 21), and cervical cancer group (CC/KCC, n = 22). Microbiota analysis was conducted using full-length 16S rDNA gene sequencing with the PacBio platform. RESULTS: The vaginal bacterial community in the Z and AB groups exhibited a relatively simple structure predominantly dominated by Lactobacillus. However, CC group shows high abundances of anaerobic bacteria and alpha diversity. Biomarkers such as Bacteroides, Mycoplasma, Bacillus, Dialister, Porphyromonas, Anaerococcus, and Prevotella were identified as indicators of CC. Correlations were established between elevated blood C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and local/systemic inflammation, pregnancy, childbirth, and abortion, which contribute to unevenness in the vaginal microenvironment. The altered microbial diversity in the CC group was confirmed by amino acid metabolism. Oral microbial diversity exhibited an inverse pattern to that of the vaginal microbiome, indicating a unique relationship. The microbial diversity of the KCC group was significantly lower than that of the KZ group, indicating a link between oral health and cancer development. Several microbes, including Fusobacterium, Campylobacter, Capnocytophaga, Veillonella, Streptococcus, Lachnoanaerobaculum, Propionibacterium, Prevotella, Lactobacillus, and Neisseria, were identified as CC biomarkers. Moreover, periodontal pathogens were associated with blood CRP levels and oral hygiene conditions. Elevated oral microbial amino acid metabolism in the CC group was closely linked to the presence of pathogens. Positive correlations indicated a synergistic relationship between vaginal and oral bacteria. CONCLUSION: HPV infection and CC impact both the vaginal and oral microenvironments, affecting systemic metabolism and the synergy between bacteria. This suggests that the use of oral flora markers is a potential screening tool for the diagnosis of CC.

Objective: The clinical effect of tonsillectomy with the preservation of tonsillar capsule and stent tissue and punctuated suture of tonsillar capsule and stent tissue was analyzed retrospectively. Methods: From January 2013 to January 2022, a total of 960 patients underwent tonsillectomy, consisting of 530 males and 430 females with ages ranging from 4 to 60 years (median age: 11 years). The capsule and scaffold tissues were preserved in all patients during the operation, and the surrounding mucosa, capsule, and scaffold tissues were sutured without tension. Indexes such as operation time, intraoperative blood loss, tonsillar white membrane, incidence of postoperative bleeding, postoperative pain score, and incidence of tonsillar remnant were recorded, and the school attendance of children (≤12 years old) was recorded. Results: The mucosal covering of tonsillar fossa healed well in all patients, and the sutures were completely removed at 4 weeks after reexamination. All patients were followed up for 1-8 years, and there was no residual hyperplasia or residual inflammation. Children under 12 years old could return to school 4 days after surgery without any postoperative complications. Conclusion: Tonsillectomy, preserving the tonsillar capsule and scaffold tissue followed by punctate suturing, offered several advantages: it resulted in less intraoperative blood loss and postoperative pain. Patients could resume a normal diet 6 hours after the surgery without an increased risk of complications. Moreover, it significantly reduced the risk of postoperative bleeding.

PURPOSE: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a dominantly inherited disorder that involves epistaxis, mucocutaneous telangiectases, and visceral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). This study aims to investigate the genetic causes in a Chinese family with HHT. METHODS: HHT was confirmed according to Curaçao's diagnostic criteria. Three patients diagnosed with HHT and healthy members were recruited. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) and sanger sequencing were performed to define the patient's genetically pathogenic factor. RESULTS: The proband presented with recurrent epistaxis, hepatopulmonary arteriovenous malformation, and adenocarcinoma. A novel frameshift mutation (c.1376_1377delAC, p.H459Lfs*41) of the ENG gene was revealed in affected individuals by WES. There was no report of this variant and predicted to be highly damaging by causing truncation of the ENG protein. CONCLUSION: We report a novel variant in the ENG gene in Chinese that extends the mutational and phenotypic spectra of the ENG gene, and also demonstrates the feasibility of WES in the application of genetic diagnosis of HHT.

The release of antibiotics has attracted wide attention due to their abuse and discharge. How to remove these emerging contaminants is an urgent need to be solved. In the present study, sludge-based biochar combining chitosan and iron oxide was prepared via municipal sewage sludge. The novel biochar modified with chitosan and iron oxide exhibited satisfying performance in eliminating antibiotics from water. The application of modified biochar combined with activated persulfate (PS) showed a remarkable removal efficiency of 96.98% for tetracycline (TC). Analysis of the surface characteristics of the modified biochar showed the presence of structural defects, dispersed iron oxides, abundant functional groups, a porous structure, and a relatively stable crystal structure. These characteristics attributed significant importance to facilitating the degradation of TC. A series of experimental conditions including preparation temperature (600-900 ℃), reaction temperature (15-45 ℃), contaminant concentration (30-180 mg/L), adsorbent usage (0.1-1 g/L), pH (2-10), and persulfate addition concentration (1-5 mmol) were conducted. The results revealed that the highest removal efficiency was achieved at 96.98% under the conditions of TC concentration at 30 mg/L, reaction temperature at 35 ℃, pH of 4, adsorbent addition amount of 0.6 g/L, and PS concentration of 2 mmol, respectively. Three degradation pathways and seven intermediate products of TC were proposed. Therefore, our study provides a promising approach for developing effective removal of antibiotic pollutants.

To describe the impact of delayed call time for chest pain in the salvage of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients and its associated independent risk factors, and to identify risk factors associated with cumulative morbidity and mortality in STEMI patients at 4 years after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Retrospective analysis of 398 patients diagnosed with STEMI and treated with emergency PCI within 24 hours of symptom onset in Fuyang People's Hospital from April 2018 to April 2021. The enrolled patients were divided into ≤60 minutes group (193 cases), and > 60 minutes group (205 cases), according to the delayed call time of patients with chest pain. Analysis of basic clinical data, rescue time, and major cardiovascular adverse events in the 2 groups. Multifactorial logistic regression analysis of independent correlates of delayed chest pain calls and Cox proportional risk regression modeling of risk factors for cumulative morbidity and mortality at 4 years after surgery. Compared to the delayed call time ≤ 60 minutes group, the > 60 minutes group had a higher proportion of females, a history of diabetes, rural remote areas, and farmer occupation (P < .05). Binary logistic regression analysis shows the history of diabetes and female as independent risk factors for delayed call time >60 minutes for chest pain. In the delayed call time ≤60 minutes group, the time from symptom onset-to-balloon (S0-to-B) and from symptom onset-to-first medical contact (SO-to-FMC) were smaller than in the delayed call time >60 minutes group (P < .05). The sum of postinfarction angina and major cardiovascular adverse events was lower in the group with delayed call time ≤60 minutes than in the group with delayed call time >60 minutes (P < .05). The Kaplan-Meier survival curve and the survival curve without the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events were statistically significant in both groups (P < .05). Multifactorial Cox regression analysis showed that delayed call time for chest pain >60 minutes, left main + 3 branch lesions, and cardiac function Killip ≥ III were all risk factors for cumulative morbidity and mortality at 4 years after PCI in patients with STEMI. Delayed call time for chest pain >60 minutes, left main + 3 branch lesions, and cardiac function Killip ≥ III are all risk factors for cumulative morbidity and mortality in STEMI patients at 4 years after PCI. Reducing the delayed call time for chest pain can improve the long-term prognosis of patients.

Background: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a lethal parasitic disease caused by infection with the metacestode of the dog/fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis, which primarily affects the liver. Although continued efforts have been made to find new drugs against this orphan and neglected disease, the current treatment options remain limited, with drug delivery considered a likely barrier for successful treatment. Methods: Nanoparticles (NPs) have gained much attention in the field of drug delivery due to their potential to improve delivery efficiency and targetability. In this study, biocompatible PLGA nanoparticles encapsulating a novel carbazole aminoalcohol anti-AE agent (H1402) were prepared to promote the delivery of the parent drug to liver tissue for treating hepatic AE. Results: H1402-loaded nanoparticles (H1402-NPs) had a uniform spherical shape and a mean particle size of 55 nm. Compound H1402 was efficiently encapsulated into PLGA NPs with a maximal encapsulation efficiency of 82.1% and drug loading content of 8.2%. An in vitro uptake assay demonstrated that H1402-NPs rapidly penetrated the in vitro cultured pre-cyst wall and extensively accumulated in the pre-cysts of E. multilocularis within only 1 h. The biodistribution profile of H1402-NPs determined through ex vivo fluorescence imaging revealed significantly enhanced liver distribution compared to unencapsulated H1402, which translated to improved therapeutic efficacy and reduced systemic toxicity (especially hepatotoxicity and cytotoxicity) in a hepatic AE murine model. Following a 30-day oral regimen (100 mg/kg/day), H1402-NPs significantly reduced the parasitic burden in both the parasite mass (liver and metacestode total weight, 8.8%) and average metacestode size (89.9%) compared to unmedicated infected mice (both p-values < 0.05); the treatment outcome was more effective than those of albendazole- and free H1402-treated individuals. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate the advantages of encapsulating H1402 into PLGA nanoparticles and highlight the potential of H1402-NPs as a promising liver-targeting therapeutic strategy for hepatic AE.

Most solid tumors are clinically treated using surgical resection, and the presence of residual tumor tissues at the surgical margins often determines tumor survival and recurrence. Herein, a hydrogel (Apt-HEX/Cp-BHQ1 Gel, termed AHB Gel) is developed for fluorescence-guided surgical resection. AHB Gel is constructed by tethering a polyacrylamide hydrogel and ATP-responsive aptamers together. It exhibits strong fluorescence under high ATP concentrations corresponding to the TME (100-500 µm) but shows little fluorescence at low ATP concentrations (10-100 nm) such as those in normal tissues. AHB Gel can rapidly (within 3 min) emit fluorescence after exposure to ATP, and the fluorescence signal only occurs at sites exposed to high ATP, resulting in a clear boundary between the ATP-high and ATP-low regions. In vivo, AHB Gel exhibits specific tumor-targeting capacity with no fluorescence response in normal tissue, providing clear tumor boundaries. In addition, AHB Gel has good storage stability, which is conducive to its future clinical application. In summary, AHB Gel is a novel tumor microenvironment-targeted DNA-hybrid hydrogel for ATP-based fluorescence imaging. It can enable the precise imaging of tumor tissues, showing promising application in fluorescence-guided surgeries in the future.

Chitooligosaccharide (COS) is a low molecular weight product of chitosan degradation. Although COS induces plant resistance by activating phenylpropanoid metabolism, there are few reports on whether COS accelerates wound healing in potato tubers by promoting the deposition of phenolic acids and lignin monomers at wounds. The results showed that COS activated phenylalanine ammonialyase and cinnamate 4-hydroxylase and promoted the synthesis of cinnamic, caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic acids, total phenolics and flavonoids. COS activated 4-coumaric acid coenzyme A ligase and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase and promoted the synthesis of sinapyl, coniferyl and cinnamyl alcohols. COS also increased H2O2 levels and peroxidase activity and accelerated the deposition of suberin polyphenols and lignin on wounds. In addition, COS reduced weight loss and inhibited lesion expansion in tubers inoculated with Fusarium sulfureum. Taken together, COS accelerated wound healing in potato tubers by inducing phenylpropanoid metabolism and accelerating the deposition of suberin polyphenols and lignin at wounds.

Phase separation is a crucial biophysical process that governs cellular signaling and function. This process allows biomolecules to separate and form membraneless compartments in response to both extra- and intra-cellular stimuli. Recently, the identification of phase separation in different immune signaling pathways, including the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway, has shed light on its tight association with pathological processes such as viral infections, cancers, and inflammatory diseases. In this review, we present the phase separation in cGAS-STING signaling, along with its related cellular regulatory functions. Furthermore, we discuss the introduction of therapeutics targeting cGAS-STING signaling, which plays a pivotal role in cancer progression.

Microplastics (MPs) are widely present in aqueous environments and aged by natural components of complex water environments, such as salinity (SI) and dissolved organic matter (DOM). However, the effects of multicondition aging on the physicochemical properties and environmental behavior of MPs have not been completely investigated. In this study, the degradable MP polybutylene succinate (PBS) was used to investigate the environmental behavior of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and was compared with polypropylene (PP). The results showed that the single-factor conditions of DOM and SI, particularly DOM, promoted the aging process of MPs more significantly, especially for PBS. The degrees of MP aging under multiple conditions were lower than those under single-factor conditions. Compared with PP, PBS had greater specific surface area, crystallinity, and hydrophilicity and thus a stronger SMZ adsorption capacity. The adsorption behavior of MPs fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models, indicating multilayer adsorption. Compared with PP, PBS showed relatively a higher adsorption capacity, for example, for MPs aged under DOM conditions, the adsorption of SMZ by PBS was up to 5.74 mg/g, whereas that for PP was only 3.41 mg/g. The desorption experiments showed that the desorption amount of SMZ on MPs in the simulated intestinal fluid was greater than that in Milli-Q water. In addition, both the original PBS and the aged PBS had stronger desorption capacities than that of PP. The desorption quantity of PBS was 1.23-1.84 times greater than PP, whereas the desorption rates were not significantly different. This experiment provides a theoretical basis for assessing the ecological risks of degradable MPs in complex water conditions.

Developing artificial microsystems based on liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) to mimic cellular dynamic compartmentalization has gained increasing attention. However, limitations including complicated components and laborious fabrication techniques have hindered their development. Herein, we describe a new single-component dynamic compartmentalization system using peptide-oligonucleotide conjugates (POCs) produced from short elastin-like polypeptides (sELPs) and oligonucleotides (ONs), which can perform thermoreversible phase transition between a nanovesicle and a microdroplet. The phase transition of sELP-ONs is thoroughly investigated, of which the transition temperature can be controlled by concentration, length of sELPs and ONs, base sequences, and salt. Moreover, the sELP-ON microcompartment can enrich a variety of functional molecules including small molecules, polysaccharides, proteins, and nucleic acids. Two sELP-ON compartments are used as nano- and microreactors for enzymatic reactions, separately, in which chemical activities are successfully regulated under different-scaled confinement effects, demonstrating their broad potential application in matter exchange and artificial cells.

Nitrophenols are toxic substances that present humans and animals with the risk of deformities, mutations, or cancer when ingested or inhaled. Traditional water treatment technologies have high costs and low p-nitrophenol (PNP) removal efficiency. Therefore, an ultraviolet (UV)-activated granular activated carbon supported nano-zero-valent-iron-cobalt (Co-nZVI/GAC) activated persulfate (PS) system was constructed to efficiently degrade PNP with Co-nZVI/GAC dosage, PS concentration, UV power, and pH as dependent variables and PNP removal rate as response values. A mathematical model between the factors and response values was developed using a central composite design (CCD) model. The model-fitting results showed that the PNP degradation rate was 96.7%, close to the predicted value of 98.05 when validation tests were performed under Co-nZVI/GAC injection conditions of 0.827 g/L, PS concentration of 3.811 mmol/L, UV power of 39.496 W, and pH of 2.838. This study demonstrates the feasibility of the response surface methodology for optimizing the UV-activated Co-nZVI/GAC-activated PS degradation of PNP.

Targeted protein degradation via proteasomal and lysosomal pathways is a promising therapeutic approach, and proteins in cytoplasm or on the cell membrane can be easily contacted and have become the major targets. However, degradation of disease-related proteins that exist in membrane-bound organelles (MBO) such as the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) remains unsolved due to the membrane limits. Here we describe a DNA nanodevice that shows ER targeting capacity and undergoes new intracellular degradation via the autophagy-dependent pathway. Then the DNA nanostructure functionalized with specific ligands is used to selectively catch ER-localized proteins and then transport them to the lysosome for degradation. Through this technique, the degradation of both exogenous ER-resident protein (ER-eGFP) and endogenous overexpressed molecular chaperone (glucose-regulated protein 78) in cancer cells has been successfully executed with high efficiency.

Frequent outbreaks of harmful algal blooms (HABs) represent one of the most serious outcomes of eutrophication, and light radiation plays a critical role in the succession of species. Therefore, a better understanding of the impact of light radiation is essential for mitigating HABs. In this study, Chlorella pyrenoidosa and non-toxic and toxic Microcystis aeruginosa were mono-cultured and co-cultured to explore algal responses under different nutrient regimes. Comparisons were made according to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), UV-B radiation exerted oxidative stresses, and negative effects on the photosynthesis and growth of three species under normal growth conditions, and algal adaptive responses included extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) production, the regulation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, photosynthetic pigments synthesis, etc. Three species had strain-specific responses to UV-B radiation and toxic M. aeruginosa was more tolerant and showed a higher adaptation capability to UV-B in the mono-cultures, including the lower sensitivity and better self-repair efficiency. In addition to stable µmax in PAR ad UV-B treatments, higher EPS production and enhanced production of photosynthetic pigments under UV-B radiation, toxic M. aeruginosa showed a better recovery of its photosynthetic efficiency. Nutrient enrichment alleviated the negative effects of UV-B radiation on three species, and the growth of toxic M. aeruginosa was comparable between PAR and UV-B treatment. In the co-cultures with nutrient enrichment, M. aeruginosa gradually outcompeted C. pyrenoidosa in the PAR treatment and UV-B treatment enhanced the growth advantages of M. aeruginosa, when toxic M. aeruginosa showed a greater competitiveness. Overall, our study indicated the adaptation of typical algal species to ambient UV-B radiation and the stronger competitive ability of toxic M. aeruginosa in the UV-radiated waters with severer eutrophication.

Objective: To analyze the effect of depression on the recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) 1 year after radio-frequency ablation. Methods: A total of 91 patients with AF admitted to our hospital from January 2020 to July 2021 were studied. All patients were followed up 1 year after radio-frequency ablation. A total of 91 subjects were divided into recurrence group (n = 30) and no recurrence group (n = 61) according to the recurrence situation 1 year after radio-frequency ablation. Age, disease course, body mass index (BMI), gender, echocardiography (left atrial diameter), blood inflammatory indicators (neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, and monocyte count), and Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores were compared between the two groups. Logistic multivariate regression analysis was used to analyze the effect of SDS score and other indexes on the recurrence of AF 1 year after radio-frequency ablation. Results: The age of patients in relapse group was higher than that in no relapse group (P < 0.05) and the course of disease was longer than that of the no recurrence group (P < 0.05). The BMI was higher than that of the no recurrence group (P < 0.05) and the left atrial diameter was greater than that of the no recurrence group (P < 0.05). Neutrophil count and monocyte count were significantly higher than those in no recurrence group (P < 0.05) and the lymphocyte count was significantly lower than that in the no recurrence group (P < 0.05). There were significant differences in SDS score composition between the two groups (P < 0.05) and the composition ratio of patients with moderate and major depression in the relapsing group was significantly higher than that in the non-relapsing group. The composition ratio of patients without depression in the relapsing group was significantly lower than that in the non-relapsing group. Multivariate analysis showed that age, disease course, BMI, left atrial diameter, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, monocyte count, and SDS score were all independent factors affecting the recurrence of AF patients 1 year after radio frequency ablation (P < 0.05). Compared with patients without depression, patients with mild, moderate and major depression had an increased risk of recurrence by 74.0, 98.2, and 151.2% 1 year after radio-frequency ablation, respectively (OR = 1.740, 1.982, and 2.512). Conclusion: There is a high rate of depression in patients with AF. Depression is an important factor affecting the early recurrence of patients with AF after radio-frequency ablation.
